Dielectric testing techniques, in both time and frequency domains, are currently widely used by power utilities for assessment of the condition of transformer oil-paper insulation systems. However, it has been reported that results of these tests are highly influenced by the operating temperature during measurements. The distribution, migration and equilibrium of moisture between oil and paper in a complicated insulation system is highly temperature dependent. It requires adequate experience and proper understanding to interpret the dielectric response results in the presence of temperature variations and thermal instability. Proper analysis of the dielectric test result is only possible with an understanding of the physical behavior of the insulation system in response to temperature. A circuit model, which describes the dielectric behavior of the transformers main insulation system, has been investigated in this paper. The values of the parameters of the model have been identified from the dielectric tests. A correlation has been observed between the operating temperature and the equivalent model parameters that can be used as additional information for better interpretation of the dielectric test results. This paper thus reports a detailed study on the effects of temperature on dielectric measurements of a transformer under controlled laboratory conditions. Some results of practical on-site testing are also presented to demonstrate the possibility of errors that may be introduced in dielectric test results analysis unless temperature effects are taken into consideration. Electricity distribution companies are in-charge-of supplying stable electric energy to urban customers over a wide geographical area. In these distribution networks, large number of Distribution-Transformers (DTs) are installed on towers or in electric-rooms with the ratings below 1000 kVA, which are the most important assets of distribution companies. Periodic maintenance and test services are not economically feasible for all in-operation transformers. Hence, estimating the remaining useful life and scheduling the maintenance times of DTs are of great technical and economic importance. An analytical approach is presented in this paper for predicting lifetime of DTs based on degree of polymerization. An appropriate Machine-Learning (ML) algorithm trained by measured data is selected for forecasting driven load according to the ambient temperature and humidity and day-hour schedules. The relation of Hot-Spot-Temperature in IEC60076∼7 is modified based on the measured data for accounting unbalanced-loading. Neutral-current is predicted using a trained ML-model. Another approach is proposed for determining times of oil filtering services aiming to minimize the maintenance cost and maximizing the remaining life. The proposed lifetime estimation method is validated by comparing its results with the damaged DT data of a sample network chosen as the case studies for this research, i.e., Bushehr province, Iran. Active electricity distribution systems (AEDS) play an important role on the social welfare that is highly relies on the reliability of these systems. In this regard, maintenance management tries to decrease component failures via repairing component that are more possible to be failed in operation time. In this manuscript, a stochastic MINLP maintenance scheduling model is proposed in which the reliability of AEDS's equipment is considered through employing a three-state Markov model. This model helps us to embed the uncertainty of AEDS's equipment service restoration time by considering online monitoring system for it and FLISR functions in AEDS. In this paper, minimizing the total cost of AEDS is determined as objective function considering total customer interruption cost, total cost of energy not supplied, total cost of prevented maintenance actions, total corrective maintenance actions cost implemented in the AEDS and total cost of implementing online monitoring for AEDS's component in maintenance scheduling. The proposed framework is applied in two different cases, Case I is maintenance scheduling without online monitoring system and Case II is maintenance scheduling with online monitoring system. The aforementioned cases are implemented in an IEEE Test System as well as a real scale distribution network. Smart buildings form an integral part of the smart grid that lowers electricity cost. This objective can be achieved by using suitable enhanced algorithms and techniques. The motivation of this paper is the request for an economical decision-making system from a commercial company in Singapore. This paper presents an economical building management system (EBMS) concept inspired by the building management system and machine learning. EBMS improves the decision-making process through rule-based algorithm within the system. Machine learning algorithm is included as part of EBMS to enhance the computational calculation for the electricity distribution. It includes the function of self-making decision for purchasing electricity based on forecasting system for electricity price or real-time electricity price data when facility managers are not present. EBMS uses multiagent system to communicate, interact, and negotiate with multiple agents for energy supply and demand in the building. Simulation studies have shown the potential of EBMS concept to provide a cost reduction solution up to 61.42% savings for smart buildings. This paper presents the outcomes of laboratory evaluation of the performance of a sample of LED lighting systems (lamp/driver and dimmer combinations) in presence of audio frequency injection control (AFIC) signals used by electricity distribution system network service providers (DNSPs) for control of certain loads. The testing presented in this study has been undertaken in response to a significant number of customer complaints that have been received by DNSPs related to the performance of LED lighting systems with dimmers incorporated. In a number of cases, performance issues have been verified in the field to occur during periods where AFIC signaling voltages are present in the electricity distribution network. In order to determine the contributing factors that AFIC signaling may have on the performance of the LED lighting system, a light-based flicker evaluation testing system has been developed to investigate LED lighting system performance under controlled conditions. One of the main objectives of the study was to use light-based flicker indices to identify the effect on different combinations of LED lamps/drivers and dimmers by varying the voltage magnitude and frequency of the AFIC signal as well as the position (i.e., voltage output) of the dimmer. Visual observations were also carried out to investigate the correlation between measured flicker indices and visually observed flicker. Soft open points (SOPs) are power electronic devices which provide interconnection between two feeders in place of normally open points in electricity distribution networks. SOPs can continuously control active power flow between feeders and inject reactive power controllably at both nodes, which can be used to provide substantial capacity support to the system. This paper provides a reliability-based method to quantify the capacity value (the additional load which can be accommodated without reducing reliability) of SOPs using the Effective Load Carrying Capability method within a Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS). Optimization of post-fault active/reactive power injections by SOPs to minimize energy not supplied is formulated (directly in matrix form) as a second-order cone programming problem. This results in very low computational times which enables embedding of the optimization problem within the MCS. The proposed methodology is applied to a modified real-world distribution network considering three different SOP sizes (5 SOPs totalling 2.5, 5, 10 MVA) across three redundancy levels (N-1, N-0.75, N-0.5), and on an unbalanced network with distributed generation. Results demonstrate capacity values ranging from 2.4–12.84 MVA. When operating under a relaxed redundancy level, the capacity value of a given SOP capacity can more than double relative to N-1. This paper proposes a new scheme for bulk system restoration considering the available black-start resources (BSRs) in the distribution system (DS). The DS assisted generator start-up sequence (D-GSS) scheme is realized in a decentralized way, so that it does not only benefit the bulk system GSS by utilizing available BSRs in the DS, but also respects the independent operation of the transmission system operator (TSO) and distribution system operators (DSOs). First, the decentralized D-GSS scheme is presented including the interaction of the TSO and DSOs and the corresponding compact models. The models of the decentralized D-GSS scheme are built with the bulk system GSS modeled as a mixed-integer quadratic program (MIQP), the DS multi-step operation modeled as mixed-integer second-order conic programs (MISOCPs) and reliable power supply assessments of renewable energy sources as linear programs (LPs). Finally, a projection function based analytical target cascading (P-ATC) method is developed to iteratively solve the decentralized models with model complexity reduction. The P-ATC algorithm can handle integer variables and improve the computational efficiency of the iterative calculation process. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated using the small-scale T6D2 system and large-scale T118D5 system, showing good GSS performance and computation efficiency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper discusses electrical distribution for refrigerated containers (reefers) in port terminals, characterized as parks of uniform distributed loads. Power systems of uniform distributed loads need configurations with modularity whenever possible, to ensure an easier installation, operation, and maintenance with significant cost reductions. This paper shows what has been the practice at ports in the past to provide Low Voltage (LV) supply to reefers from medium voltage (MV)/LV substations to cluster of reefer outlets panel with group of outdoor receptacles, used to connect power supply cord to each reefer. In the new method of power distribution system for the reefers, it is suggested to use a main MV underground distribution and portable containerized MV/LV transformer substations with close coupled LV distribution panel including reefer outlets. This potable power supply unit can be installed inside the reefer racks to supply locally a modular LV distribution to the reefers. This new method of supplying power to reefer racks has benefits over the past practice. It can offer a relevant flexibility for expansions and endorses development of new fitting components. This paper is motivated by the need to ensure fast microgrid stability. Modeling for purposes of establishing stability criterion and possible implementations are described. In particular, this paper proposes that highly heterogeneous microgrids comprising both conventional equipment and equipment based on rapidly emerging new technologies can be modeled as purely electric networks in order to provide intuitive insight into the issues of network stability. It is shown that the proposed model is valid for representing fast primary dynamics of diverse components (gensets, loads, and PVs), assuming that slower variables are regulated by the higher level controllers. Based on this modeling approach, an intuitively appealing criterion is introduced requiring that components or their combined representations must behave as closed-loop passive electrical circuits. Implementing this criterion is illustrated using a typical commercial feeder microgrid. Notably, these set the basis for standards that should be required for groups of components (subgrids) to ensure no fast instabilities in complex microgrids. Building the need for incrementally passive and monotonic characteristics into standards for network components may clarify the system level analysis and integration of microgrids. An optimized system management of a commercial and industrial power system must take care of the actual operational and energetic duty of the power system distribution. A procedure based on the Arrhenius model of the thermal aging of insulating materials allows introducing the relative time coefficient and promoting a heuristic method, as a rule of thumb, to estimate the life loss and the residual useful life for insulated power cables. This paper deals with simplified models of low-voltage (LV) cable systems characterized by one and two time constants to evaluate the cable temperature behavior and the influences of the ambient and installation conditions. This paper presents a novel rectifier array for a wide dynamic range of RF-dc conversion. The rectifier array consists of multiple rectifier cells optimized for operation at different power levels and uses an adaptive power distribution method to divide the RF input power among these rectifier cells according to the RF power levels. The adaptive power distribution takes advantage of the power-dependent input impedances of the rectifier cells and is implemented with passive devices. This method both improves the rectification efficiency and minimizes the impedance mismatch as the input power level varies, and therefore, significantly enhances the dynamic range. The rectifier array can be designed using either the same type or different types of rectifying devices and can be expanded by including more cells in the network to further increase the dynamic range. In this paper, three different implementations of such rectifier array circuits are described, including a two-diode rectifier array designed with the same type of diodes, a two-diode rectifier array designed with different types of diodes, and a three-diode rectifier array with different types of diodes. The performances of these circuits are validated with measurement and compared with each other. Significant enhancement of dynamic range over conventional rectifiers is demonstrated. In dc distribution networks, the parallel H-bridge dc/dc converters (HBDCs) are widely adopted to convert voltage levels with the higher power rating and reliability, in which the parallel HBDCs are naturally connected in input-parallel output-parallel (IPOP) form. However among IPOP HBDCs, there are complicated circulating currents that will influence the safe and steady operation of dc distribution networks. This paper focuses on the suppression of these circulating currents. First, the detailed mathematic models of circulating currents among IPOP HBDCs are derived. Through the model, it is found that various types of circulating currents exist in the system, including the circulating currents within the single HBDC and the circulating currents among the multiple HBDCs. Hence, the suppression of circulating currents among IPOP HBDCs is a multiobjective control problem. In this paper, it is proven that the conventional one degree of freedom control based on the bipolar modulation cannot eliminate all the circulating currents. Second, a novel two degrees of freedom control method is proposed to suppress all kinds of circulating currents based on the improved modulation way of HBDCs, which consists of two parts. The droop based control is used to suppress the circulating currents among the multiple HBDCs, whereas the common mode control is used to control the circulating currents within the single HBDC. DC electric power systems, including HVDC, HVDC light, dc distribution systems, and dc microgrids, have a significant position in present and, especially, future electric power systems, namely, smart grids. One of the most significant issues of electric power systems, including dc electric power systems, is the calculation of accurate and fair energy costs of the consumers. In this paper, novel, simple, practical, and precise relations between economic and electrical variables in dc electric power systems are extracted. The novel relations prove that there are interesting relations between voltages of nodes, as electrical variables, and prices of nodes, as economic variables, in dc electric power systems. Applying the extracted novel relations in this paper, a new, fair, precise, practical nodal price, i.e., the fair nodal price, is determined to calculate the energy costs of consumers in dc electric power systems, including dc distribution systems and microgrids. Moreover, as an application of the extracted novel relations, a practical method to determine the fair nodal prices of all nodes and, as a result, the real energy cost of each consumer at each node of dc electric power systems is presented. Day-ahead scheduling has played a significant role in the operation of distribution systems, aiming at minimizing the total operation cost. With the excessive integration of information and communication technologies and intelligent electronic devices, distribution system operators may seek to optimally control the active management elements to increase the economic and technical performance of future smart distribution systems. This paper focuses on an integrated day-ahead scheduling scheme that is formulated as a mixed integer second-order cone programming problem to obtain the optimal solution by means of the relaxed power flow model (RPFM). The detailed technical constraints for all the elements are accommodated based on the RPFM-based optimization method. Meanwhile, active management cost and punishment cost of wind power curtailed and customer energy not supplied are also considered in the design objectives of this paper. In order to address the uncertainties, a stochastic robust optimization method is first introduced to decide the active management elements (including capacitor bank, electrical storage system, controllable load, and switch) as the robust decision scheme. Afterwards, the column-and-constraint generation algorithm is applied to solve the proposed stochastic robust two-stage optimization model. Numerical results based on the IEEE 33-bus, PG&E 69-bus, and practical 152-bus systems are obtained to verify the effectiveness of the proposed method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The active power distribution network operation with the integration of various renewable distributed generations (DGs), storage units, and dynamic loads are attracting a lot of interest due to substantial benefits in maximizing the penetration of available renewable energy resources (RES). However, the risk of voltage violation in the active distribution system (ADS) is exacerbated due to increasing penetration of DGs. It has become a bottleneck to maximize the DG penetration into the system. This bottleneck can be handled by effective voltage regulation and reactive power support into ADS. Nowadays, power electronic devices are frequently used for voltage and reactive power support over the conventional approaches. In this paper, an approach to maximize the penetration of RES, such as solar, wind, etc., into ADS by maximum utilization of existing solar photovoltaic inverters (SPVI) in the system is presented. Optimal utilization of SPVI may enhance the voltage stability of the ADS and wind power penetration into the system. The proposed SPVI control approaches are depended on active power generation of solar photovoltaic (SPVG), rating and capability of SPVI, and required reactive power in the ADS. In this paper, the problem of maximum penetration of RES is formulated as an optimal power flow embedded nonlinear optimization problem subject to the physical limitations of the SPVI. The results of the analysis performed on an IEEE 33 bus system show that the proposed SPVI control strategies can improve the voltage profile of the ADS with minimization of curtailment of wind power generation. Grid-tied inverters and associated control techniques have gained importance in the domain of distributed generation. Different methods of control have been compared in the literature depending upon the ability to meet total harmonic distortion limits, damping offered to resonant oscillations, and stable operation. Multiple-loop methods compared to their single-loop counterparts have proved to be highly effective for meeting the grid regulations. In the literature, while single-loop and two-loop control systems for LCL filter have been assessed, not much study on three-loop control (TLC) has been done, possibly due to the hardware complexity and cost imparted by the increase in the number of sensors. In this paper, a TLC structure for grid connected inverters is analyzed for stability and parametric variations. Robustness of TLC is compared with single-loop grid current feedback control and a two-loop control structure. An approach to estimate the state variables is proposed in this paper, which cuts down the number of sensors and cost of implementation. The performance of the system is analyzed through simulations and results are validated in a hardware setup, under dynamic and steady-state conditions, thereby showing that this is a promising approach. This paper presents an algorithm for fast, directional detection of phase-to-ground faults in isolated neutral distribution grids. The method reacts directionally and very fast to fault conditions (1–2 samples after fault inception, even without large di0/dt). Moreover, the method is able to detect low- and high-impedance faults (HIF), permanent or transient faults. The algorithm is independent of the sampling frequency, very robust to noise, and does not need calibration of the sensors. The direction detection method relies on the fault model identification, based on the zero-sequence grid capacitance estimate for isolated neutral grids. The estimate is obtained from the fault circuit differential equation, solved with the least-squares method, where appropriate numerical modifications have been introduced. The sign of the estimate provides the directional information, whereas the magnitude of the modified estimate indicates the fault. The directional principle is validated in simulation and the fault detection method is validated with real fault records from the RedNA project. The paper reworks the equations that define the nondetection zone, so that the method is comparable to the classical residual overcurrent and overvoltage functions, typically used to detect HIF. This paper comprehensively analyzes the stability of a grid-interfacing inverter with the LCL -filter in the discrete domain, where the LCL-filter, along with the controller, is modeled in a polar coordinate. System open-loop and closed-loop poles are analytically studied and expressed in the z -domain. Through the poles movement and distribution analysis, the relationship between system stability and the ratio of resonance frequency over sampling frequency is mathematically revealed and calculated as well as the system control gain limit. Moreover, this paper demonstrates that a grid-voltage feedforward regulator would significantly alter the inverter stability in a weak power system. By means of Jury stability criterion, the stability status under different filter resonance frequency is given. The selection of resonance frequency and filter parameters makes a considerable difference on system behavior. Finally, to improve the robustness against grid inductance variation, a conservative design recommendation of filter parameters and control gain is given. The unit commitment is still a widely studied problem, especially when more renewable energy of stochastic character is being added to power systems. This paper proposes a model for weekly planning of systems involving hydro, wind, and thermal energy under a stochastic perspective. The proposed model follows the endogenous reserve determination criterion to achieve a simultaneous optimization of energy and reserves considering wind uncertainty, forced outages of equipment, a dc Flow model of the network, and cascaded head sensitive hydro systems, among others. The paper also develops a practical solution methodology based on outer approximation and benders decomposition. This paper analyzes the robust stability of a mixed source microgrid comprised of a synchronous generator-based distributed energy resource (DER) and an inverter-based DER. Few studies conducted recently indicated that power system stabilizers (PSSs) are advantageous for damping local oscillations of synchronous generator-based DERs. However, stability issues may arise due to interaction of the parameters of PSS and system. This paper proposes a method to determine the stability region for the system when any two parameters are considered uncertain based on robust control theory. A sufficient condition for robust stability is presented using bialternate sum matrix of the system with uncertain parameters. The bialternate sum matrix approach is compared with a branch and bound approach presented in earlier studies. These two methods are shown to yield identical results for a single machine infinite bus system. However, the proposed bialternate sum matrix approach requires far less computational effort. In the restructured power industry, bulk energy storage may play a crucial role to provide the flexibility required by system operators to cater for the unprecedented levels of uncertainty. Within the context of co-optimized electricity markets for energy and reserves under wind uncertainty, this paper addresses the incorporation of bulk energy storage units in day-ahead network-constrained energy and reserve scheduling. A novel two-stage robust optimization approach is presented whereby the nonconvex and time-coupled operation of storage devices is precisely modeled while accounting for the anticipativity of the two-stage setting. The resulting robust counterpart is cast as a mixed-integer trilevel program with lower-level binary variables. In order to address the nonconvexity of the recourse problem, this paper proposes the application of an exact nested column-and-constraint generation algorithm. Emerging environmental awareness, government subsidies, and deferred utility investments have created an environment that favors the proliferation of distributed energy resources (DERs) in distribution systems. While beneficial, these DERs create operational challenges to the power utility, ranging from additional safety risks to unstable system operation. Among those, traditional feeder overcurrent protection can become desensitized due to the additional fault contribution output by DERs. In some cases, it may not be possible to protect the entire distribution line. This effect is introduced in this paper as the Apparent Effect, which accounts for the reduction in fault contribution from the substation. Its extent varies depending on the DER technology, i.e., synchronous, induction, doubly-fed induction generators, or inverter-based DERs. Substantial investment may be required to overcome this effect and maintain feeder protection dependability. This paper proposes a novel control method for an asymmetrical-cascaded-multilevel-converter-based hybrid energy storage system (HESS), which includes one battery and several electrical double-layer capacitors (EDLCs). Traditionally, it is challenging to control the power distribution between different cascaded H-bridges by using different energy storage components as dc sources. In this paper, a feedforward space-vector-modulation (FFSVM) technique is used to distribute the active power between the battery and EDLCs. With the proposed voltage feedforward mechanism, the HESS can flexibly operate in the normal operation mode, the high-power output mode, and the reverse power absorption mode. The principle and effectiveness of the improved FFSVM technique are analyzed. Meanwhile, the state-of-charge-balancing mechanisms are introduced. The simulation results obtained in MATLAB/Simulink as well as the experimental results of a hybrid energy storage test bed based on the proposed system are presented to verify its performance. A High Impedance Fault (HIF) in the power distribution systems remains mostly undetected by conventional protection schemes due to low fault currents. Apart from degrading the reliability of power supply to customers, HIF can impose a high cost on the utilities due to technical damages. The nonlinear and asymmetric nature of HIF makes its detection and identification very challenging. HIF signatures are in the form of minute-level distortions in the observable AC sinusoidal voltage and current waveforms but these signatures do not follow a clear pattern. In this paper, we present Advanced Distortion Detection Technique (ADDT), based on waveform analytics to distinguish and detect HIF. In addition, the ADDT analysis provides a fair assessment about the location and severity of HIF for efficient decision-making at the DSO level. ADDT is computationally lightweight and can be implemented in actual relays, hence it is enabled to provide an easy and cost-effective solution to HIF detection issues. ADDT robustness is tested in several simulation cases of interest using the IEEE-34 and IEEE-13 distribution test feeder systems in RTDS power system simulator. This paper proposes a fundamental model for continuous-time scheduling and marginal pricing of energy generation and storage in day-ahead power systems operation. The paper begins with formulating the economic operation problem of power systems with generating units and energy storage (ES) devices as a continuous-time optimal control problem, where the Lagrange multiplier trajectory associated with the continuous-time power balance constraint is proven to be the marginal price of energy generation and storage. The marginal price is calculated in closed-form, which reveals that in addition to the incremental cost rates of generating units, the marginal price embeds the financial ES charging offers and discharging bids that are defined as incremental charging utility and incremental discharging cost rates. This paper shows that the adjoint function associated with the ES state equation establishes a temporal dependence between the marginal prices during the ES charge and discharge states. A function space-based method is developed to solve the proposed model, which converts the continuous-time problem into a mixed-integer linear programming problem with finite dimensional decision space. The conservative power theory (CPT) is a time-domain theory applicable to any periodic signal single- or polyphase system with or without a neutral conductor. The principle operation is the orthogonal decomposition of electrical variables, resulting in electrical quantities with physical meaning. An important feature of the CPT is the current decomposition. It consists of decomposing any current into five parts. The label of these parts is active current, reactive current, scattered active current, scattered reactive current, and generated current. This paper proposes the application of the current decomposition of the CPT in distributed energy resources (DERs). A supervisory controller (SC) uses the current decomposition in a load power-sharing strategy. The combination of these two issues is the main contribution of this paper. Moreover, the proposal of this paper is more attractive than the conventional droop strategy since the DERs follow their current reference in a current-controlled mode, making the load sharing faster, more reliable, and more accurate. A clear understanding of how the CPT decomposes load currents into its parts is presented, as well as the drawback found in droop strategy when dealing with load power sharing. In hydroelectric power plants, which are characterized by particularly high short-circuit current levels and high time constants, conventional current transformer specifications can result in increased equipment dimensions, thus complicating their installation, especially during refurbishment projects. This paper presents a study to assess the potential of various low-power instrument transformers (LPITs) for generator protection applications. Two types of LPITs were evaluated: the optical current transformer (OCT) and the stand alone merging unit (SAMU). To test the OCT, a 65-kA-peak test source was developed using a real-time simulator. This source was used to inject symmetrical and asymmetrical currents into LPITs for the assessment of protection accuracy class. Low-current tests were also performed to assess their metering classes. This paper presents the design of a high-current test bench, measurement uncertainty analysis, and analysis algorithms used for device evaluation. For nearly 20 years, the Test Feeder Working Group of the Distribution System Analysis Subcommittee has been developing openly available distribution test feeders for use by researchers. The purpose of these test feeders is to provide models of distribution systems that reflect the wide diversity in design and their various analytic challenges. Because of their utility and accessibility, the test feeders have been used for a wide range of research, some of which has been outside the original scope of intended uses. This paper provides an overview of the existing distribution feeder models and clarifies the specific analytic challenges that they were originally designed to examine. Additionally, this paper will provide guidance on which feeders are best suited for various types of analysis. The purpose of this paper is to provide the original intent of the Working Group and to provide the information necessary so that researchers may make an informed decision on which of the test feeders are most appropriate for their work. This paper presents a new non-deterministic approach for multiyear distribution network reinforcement planning (DNRP) considering the uncertainty sources pertaining to loads, electricity prices, investment costs, and operation costs. Accordingly, the underlying idea of the information-gap decision theory (IGDT) is used to obtain a robust solution protected against different realizations of each uncertain variable lying in its robust region. The proposed model is capable of adjusting the robustness of the optimal solution in terms of a specific parameter designated as the budget of uncertainty. As the uncertain loads, investment and operation costs competitively tend to maximize their robust regions for a particular value of the budget of uncertainty, the normalized normal constraint (NNC) method as a proficient multi-objective optimization method is exploited in this paper to solve the proposed multiobjective IGDT-based DNRP (IGDT-DNRP) model. Mainly, the NNC method presents a set of Pareto optimal solutions rather than a single optimal solution. Accordingly, a posteriori out-of-sample analysis is introduced in this paper to find the best solution among the set of Pareto optimal solutions. The proposed IGDT-DNRP model is implemented on the IEEE 33-bus distribution network under different circumstances. Dual active bridge (DAB) converter is the most suitable converter to transfer high power with bidirectional power flow capability and isolation. However, it has the drawbacks of circulation power flow (CPF) and limited range of zero voltage switching (ZVS). To overcome these drawbacks, several modulation strategies have been proposed; however, the CPF can be eliminated either at input or output voltage ends. In order to eliminate the CPF at both input and output sides, a novel front and rear end switch DAB (FRS-DAB) bidirectional dc–dc converter has been proposed in this paper. It has the advantages of lower current stress, extension of ZVS range, higher power transfer capacity, and improved efficiency compared to the conventional DAB converter. The paper presents the detailed operating modes and analysis of power flow control for the proposed FRS-DAB converter. Microthrusters are used for microsatellites to provide precise motion control in space by applying very low thrust pulses, which must be properly calibrated on earth. The range of thrust levels required varies from one thruster to another, depending on its use. Thus, microthrusts that stand capable of reading thrusts of multiple ranges, depending on the configuration, are in demand. This paper discusses the features and the calibration method for a typical miniaturized thrust stand. This device is essentially a torsional pendulum whose sensitivity can be varied. The uncertain nature of wind power causes difficulties in power system operation scheduling. Probabilistic descriptions of the uncertainty have been studied for decades. However, probabilistic forecasts designed for the regional multiple wind farms are few. Although the traditional methods for the single wind farm can still be used, they have the limitations in capturing the spatial correlations among wind farms, and they are less robust when multivariate observations are not so complete. To improve the forecast quality in this case, we combine the multivariate distribution modeling and probabilistic forecasts in this paper. An advanced model—the regular vine copula, which can describe the wind farms’ dependence structure precisely and flexibly with various bivariate copulas as blocks, is used in this paper. Enough simulation data can be generated from the model, which can be easily used to form the conditional forecast distributions under multiple forecast conditions. A case of 10 wind farms in East China has been used to compare the proposed method with its competitors. This paper will present a new approach that is advantageous to medium-voltage (MV) distribution design configurations for large industrial and power distribution system configurations [specifically main-tie-main (MTM)] for large industrial and power station installations. Sixty years of traditional low-cost design approaches (typical MTM and operated with open tiebreaker) are re-evaluated to demonstrate that traditional low capital cost design may miss improvement opportunities. Those opportunities can be major capital expenditure reduction, power quality improvement, MV motor soft starter deletion, and improved system stability to name a few. Many designers may not have considered the component interrelationships and/or their tradeoffs when in an integrated system. The designer and/or user should consider the advantages of higher short-circuit capacity (SCC) systems by integrating fault current limiters and MV switchgear. Utilizing higher SCC systems permits power system designer optimization opportunities not possible before using conventional design methods. This paper will provide documentation of substantial savings of capital investment and energy under higher SCC conditions. The savings in one system component will offset another's increased cost. An obvious benefit of stiffer systems is ease of direct-on-line starting of large motor-driven compressor trains. The future need for motor soft starters minimizing system impact will be challenged. This paper may change fundamental system design methodology for system designers by removing several performance tradeoffs. This paper presents a new system for reactive power compensation and suppression of negative-sequence current for power quality improvement in electrical railways and the feeding three-phase utility grid, based on YNvd-connected balance transformer. Different from the conventional railway static power conditioner based compensation systems, this system integrates multiplex back-to-back converters (MBTBC) into phase-β side flexible taps through a cascade connection instead of into phase-β side feeder via a coupling transformer, thus the installation space and initial costs are reduced significantly. In addition, a new power distribution strategy with simple implementation is adopted in this paper, by which the compensation capacity of MBTBC can be decreased by 25%, compared with the commonly used full compensation scheme. An online approach based on application of search coil for transformer winding fault detection is presented in this paper. Earlier attempts report use of search coil for the detection of transformer interturn fault. This paper extends application of search coil for detection of winding displacement in addition to interturn fault identification. Experimental results based on specially designed 10-kVA transformer are presented to analyze search coil voltages during healthy and faulty conditions. The algorithm detects phase ($U$ , $V$, $W$), side (LV, HV), and precise location of the fault. Discrimination between interturn fault and winding radial displacement is also achieved by search coil voltage analysis. The results are experimentally verified based on impedance analyzer plots. Experimental analysis indicates that the proposed method is independent of load on the transformer, vector group, nature of winding, balanced or unbalanced source voltage, source voltage harmonics, inrush, and overexcitation conditions. In this paper, the finite-elements method was used to analyze the approximation being typically used in the international standards for the calculation of the touch voltage, appearing at earth faults in power networks. The calculations in this paper were performed on the series of earthing systems applied in practice and the results are compared with the results of the widely accepted approximate method from standards. The origin of discrepancy in the results is analyzed and evaluated. The outcome of this paper is the justification of the application of Thevenin's theorem and the development of the higher accuracy equations for the resistance between feet and remote earth in case of the application of high resistivity additional surface material. This paper focuses on estimating the substation grounding resistance to improve the modeling of geomagnetically induced currents (GICs). Grounding resistances are not included in the standard power flow models, and their approximate values are often used for performing GIC studies. This paper provides an algorithm to estimate the resistances from the GIC measurements. This algorithm calculates the linear sensitivity factors of the GICs around the local grounding resistive components and uses linear regression to solve for the resistances. If an extreme contingency strikes the Kinmen Island power system in Taiwan, it is very likely to cause blackouts. Although an underfrequency protection scheme has been applied, some drawbacks of the protection scheme hinder the Kinmen power system from avoiding blackouts. In the past decade, several blackouts have occurred in the Kinmen power system. To avoid further possible blackouts, a special protection system (SPS) is summoned. This paper describes the design guidelines and deployment procedures of an SPS for the Kinmen power system. The design depends on the Kinmen power system characteristics, and the deployment hinges upon the supervisory control and data acquisition system. Exquisite software was also developed to testify the Kinmen system SPS. Operational records have demonstrated that the proposed SPS can indeed prevent blackouts from occurring in the Kinmen power system. This paper discusses and compares phase-shifted pulse-width modulation (PS-PWM) and level-shifted PWM (LS-PWM) in a modular multilevel single-delta bridge-cell (SDBC) inverter for utility-scale grid-tied photovoltaic applications. This three-phase SDBC inverter provides the capability of operating even under power-distribution imbalances not only among three clusters, but also among cascaded bridge cells in each cluster. The main focus of this research lies in analyzing the capability of operation under severe power-distribution imbalances and presenting power-balancing methods based on zero-sequence current injection, which result in an extended power-balancing capability. This paper highlights that LS-PWM is superior to PS-PWM in both power-balancing capability and harmonic performance at the ac side of the SDBC inverter when operating under power-distribution imbalances. Uncertain and potentially harsh operating environments are often known to alter the operational performance of a system. In order to maintain system performance while coping with varying operating environments and potential disruptions, the resilience of engineered systems is desirable. Engineering systems are often interconnected in a dimensional way inherently from basic components to subsystems to the system of systems, which poses a grand challenge for system designers to analyze the resilience of such a complex system. Moreover, further complications in the assessment of resilience in the engineering domain are attributed to time-varying system performances, random perturbation occurrences, and probable failures caused by adverse events. This paper presents a dynamic Bayesian network (DBN) approach for the modeling and predictive resilience analysis for dynamic engineered systems. With the inter-time-slice links and the conditional probability tables in a DBN, the system performance could be molded as changing in a discrete time slice, while capturing the temporal probabilistic dependencies between the variables. An industrial-based case study of an electricity distribution system is further studied to demonstrate the effectiveness of the DBN approach for resilience analysis. The approach presented in this paper hopes to aid in realizing resiliency in system designs and to pave the way toward enhancements in developing resilient engineered systems. This paper presents the concept of provision of differentiated quality of electricity supply based on customers' requirements in distribution networks. To fulfill this concept, five new gap indices are proposed to reflect the satisfaction of the received power-quality (PQ) performance compared to the thresholds which are set based on customers' requirements regarding the performance of individual PQ phenomenon or the aggregated PQ performance. Using these new indices as objective functions, an optimization-based mitigation strategy is proposed to carry out the strategic placement of different flexible ac transmission systems devices based on the analysis of PQ performance and sensitivity analysis. In this methodology, a greedy algorithm is applied to search the optimal mitigation scheme in order to enable the provision of differentiated PQ levels. The feasibility of the proposed mitigation methodology is demonstrated using a large-scale generic distribution network. In recent years, electric vehicle charging stations (EVCSs) have been deployed very fast, which offer a platform for the energy coordination between electric vehicles (EVs) and the electricity distribution system (DS). This paper presents an energy management method for the operation of EVCSs and DS while considering their interaction. In this method, we first use a quality-of-service constrained decision model for EVCSs, which is formulated based on the network calculus theory. Then, the DS aims to maximize its utility by scheduling charging plans for EVCSs. Afterwards, a game based on the supply function equilibrium (SFE) model is adopted to analyze the energy interaction, in which each EVCS is regarded as the leader, and the DS as the follower. In this way, an optimization problem with equilibrium constraints is established. Moreover, a hybrid optimization algorithm based on differential evolution and interior point method is used to obtain the equilibrium solution of the SFE game. We present in this paper a method and apparatus for nonintrusive measurement of active energy in low-voltage ac installations. In the proposed method, the active power is calculated from the voltage and current waveforms, and the phase shift between them. No voltage amplitude measurement is required since the nominal voltage of the ac installation is considered as the actual voltage. This approach bypasses the main disadvantage of capacitive ac voltage probing: low accuracy in amplitude measurements due to variations on the sensor coupling capacitance. The energy meter that implements the technique is composed of a commercial nonintrusive current sensor (clamp-on current transformer) and a contactless capacitive voltage sensor—designed to measure the voltage phase and waveform. The voltage sensor includes a shield to isolate it from external electric fields, making the energy meter suitable for applications in polyphase systems. The developed energy meter does not require on-site calibration, galvanic contact to the phase conductors, neither electrical circuit opening, allowing for quick, safe, and easy installation on overhead service drop line. Due to these characteristics, it can be used by electricity distribution companies in the preinspection of consumer units suspected of fraud. Experimental results proved that the developed energy meter is insensitive to the characteristics of cables (width and insulation), external electrical fields, as well as to the voltage sensor capacitance variations. This paper presents a methodology for generating restoration sequences in distribution systems and microgrids with emphasis on deriving optimal switching times for remote control switches. Microgrid architecture considered are assumed to be operating in islanded single master mode. Control methods for handling the unbalance inherent in distribution systems using single-phase controlled PQ inverters were developed and incorporated in the proposed method. The problem of considering simultaneously both energy optimization and dynamic stability of the system, which is lacking in existing methods, was addressed by studying the transient behavior of microgrids based on extended electromagnetic transients program (EMTP) simulations and then approximate and incorporate these behaviors into the optimization formulation for restoration. The approach is based on multi-objective optimization of final restored load and total restoration time. The methodology was studied on a modified IEEE 123 node test feeder. An EMTP simulation in PSCAD of the formed microgrids was used to validate the accuracy of the dynamic and steady-state characteristics of the resulting systems. By considering the transient behavior of distributed generators (DGs) during restoration, a better restoration sequence that does not trigger protection relays could be realized. This paper discusses a market-based pool strategy for a microgrid (MG) to optimally trade electric power in the distribution electricity market (DEM). The increasing penetration levels of distributed energy resources and MGs in distribution system (DS) stress distribution system operator and require higher levels of coordinated control strategies. The distribution system operator has limited visibility and control over such distributed resources. To reduce the complexity of the system and improve the efficiency of the electricity market operation, we propose a decentralized pool strategy for an MG to integrate with a distribution system through a market mechanism. A market-based interactions procedure between MGs and DS is developed for MGs as price makers to find an optimal bidding/offering strategy efficiently. To achieve a market equilibrium among all entities, we initially cast this problem as a bi-level programming problem, in which the upper level is an MG optimal scheduling problem and the lower level presents a DEM clearing mechanism. The proposed bi-level model is converted to a single mix-integer model, which is easier to solve. Uncertainties associated with MG's rivals’ offers and demands’ bids are considered in this problem. This paper aims at proposing a mixed-integer linear formulation to incorporate reliability-oriented costs into the expansion planning model of electricity distribution networks. In this respect, revenue lost associated with the undelivered energy caused by network interruptions as well as costs incurred by the widely used reward–penalty regulations is considered as the major reliability-related costs from distribution companies point of view. A set of mixed-integer linear equations is proposed to calculate the most common distribution system reliability indices, i.e., expected energy not served, system average interruption frequency index, and system average interruption duration index. It is found that these equations can also facilitate the formulation of radiality constraint in the presence of distributed generation units. Voltage control plays an important role in the operation of electricity distribution networks, especially with high penetration of distributed energy resources. These resources introduce significant and fast varying uncertainties. In this paper, we focus on reactive power compensation to control voltage in the presence of uncertainties. We adopt a chance constraint approach that accounts for arbitrary correlations between renewable resources at each of the buses. We show how the problem can be solved efficiently using historical samples analogously to the stochastic quasi-gradient methods. We also show that this optimization problem is convex for a wide variety of probabilistic distributions. Compared to conventional per-bus chance constraints, our formulation is more robust to uncertainty and more computationally tractable. Present-day radial electric power distribution circuit faces multiple challenges due to the increased photovoltaic (PV) generation. This paper aims to examine and design modern distribution circuit topologies for accommodating high PV penetration, while addressing power quality concerns. The central hypothesis of the proposed design approach is that by decreasing the Thevenin impedance at the buses where PVs are connected, the impacts on feeder voltages due to PV generation become less pronounced thereby additional PV capacity can be integrated at the corresponding buses. A novel two-stage optimization framework is proposed. The first stage is a mixed-integer linear programing based formulation to design new optimal configuration for any given distribution circuit. The formulation allows the possibility that the circuit can be operated in either a radial or loop configuration. The second stage, a nonlinear programing based formulation, then finds PV hosting capacity for the identified optimal configuration. The proposed two-stage framework is evaluated for IEEE 123-bus test feeder. Recently, the layout optimization of the secondary coils for wireless power transfer systems has been developed using the fixed grid (FG) representation. Although this method can effectively and efficiently determine the optimized coil design under the given conditions, a distinct discrepancy exists between the evaluated coil mass (i.e., simulation data) and the physical coil mass (i.e., experiment data). In this paper, the FG-based coil layout optimization is revisited based on the smooth boundary (SB) representation in order to resolve the inherent drawbacks of the FG representation. Induced voltage, electromagnetic field strength, and coil mass, which have been previously derived in the FG representation, are reformulated in terms of design variables (i.e., a reference turn and relative turns in this paper) in the SB representation. Through the layout optimization, the optimized layouts of the secondary coil are determined in order to minimize the coil mass while satisfying the constraints for induced voltage and magnetic field strength; then, they are postprocessed in order to obtain a smooth, elaborate boundary. This paper proposes a new distributed cooperative secondary control for both frequency and voltage restoration of an islanded microgrid with droop-controlled, inverter-based distributed generations (DGs). Existing distributed methods commonly design secondary control based on the minimum real part of the nonzero Laplacian matrix eigenvalues related to the microgrid communication graph, which, however, is global information. In contrast to the existing distributed methods, in this paper we design a fully distributed adaptive control based on the dynamic model of DG units and on information from neighboring units. Therefore, the proposed control scheme increases the system reliability, decreases its sensitivity to failures, and eliminates the need for a central processing unit. The fully distributed controllers restore the islanded microgrid frequency and voltage magnitudes to their reference values for all DG units irrespective of parametric uncertainties and disturbances while providing accurate real power sharing. Furthermore, the proposed method considers the coupling between the islanded microgrid frequency and voltages.
