A gate driving for power devices is a key technology to further improve switching characteristics. With the help of digital gate driver IC, the switching behavior of power devices can be enhanced even under high-speed switching. In this paper, an evaluation platform for determining the optimal switching pattern of an active gate drive control is proposed for an inverter circuit. A high speed optimization system is built up to search for an advantageous switching pattern that reduces total switching loss of two power devices in an inverter circuit and constrains surge voltage simultaneously. The proposed online optimization demonstrates its feasibility for the full-bridge inverter circuit, which is rated at 500 V with digital active gate drive control. Experimental results show that the proposed optimization system is able to obtain optimal switching pattern from $64^{60}$ possible combinations of switching patterns within 15 min, which is 6 times faster than the previous study. Optimizations can also conducted under different load current conditions. Eventually, the obtained optimal pattern yields up to 42% reduction in the total switching loss when it constrains surge voltage to minimum compared with the conventional driving pattern. A 1-φ hybrid nine-level inverter (H9LI) topology has been proposed in this paper. The proposed H9LI topology uses a simple phase disposition pulsewidth modulation strategy to generate nine-voltage levels in the output. The main advantage of this topology is that it has a low switch count (ten switches) compared to the existing nine-level inverter topologies. To regulate the voltage across auxiliary capacitor, two innovative control techniques are proposed, which are integrated with the inverter modulation technique itself. Hence, it does not require any extra voltage balancing circuits to maintain the voltage across the auxiliary capacitor and input dc capacitors. A major advantage of these control techniques is that they eliminate the sensing of the coupled inductor current. Another significant advantage of H9LI is that loss distribution among all the power switches is more uniform compared to existing nine-level inverters. Due to low part count and absence of extra voltage balancing circuits, the H9LI achieves higher efficiency (η ≍ 94.5%) and lower cost. Furthermore, the requirement of filter size reduces due to the presence of coupled inductor in H9LI. In this paper, a novel balancing circuit is proposed, which is well suited to aerospace electronics, as it allows for the use of off-the-shelf radiation tolerant components. The new design was examined analytically with and without a zero-voltage switching topology. Its performance was compared to other popular battery balancing circuits. Further, an equation was derived, which can be used to estimate the time to balance. The proposed balancer circuit was evaluated using forward and several flyback transformer types, and with the use of static and dynamic testing, the design was also evaluated under fault conditions as it provides a short-circuit protection. Controlled switching technology operates circuit breakers at the minimum arcing time for short-circuit current interruption. However, there is no report to reveal a relationship between the short-circuit current interrupting capability with the minimum arcing time and the opening velocities of vacuum interrupters. The objective of this paper is to reveal a relationship between the short-circuit current interrupting capability with the minimum arcing time and the opening velocities of vacuum interrupters. A 40.5-kV fast vacuum circuit breaker prototype was built up which was equipped with a commercial 40.5 kV–31.5 kA vacuum interrupter and it was driven by an electromagnetic repulsion mechanism. It provided an average velocities ranging from 2.5 to 5.5 m/s. A total of 50 times of 40-kA short-circuit current interrupting tests were carried out in a synthetic circuit. Test results showed that the minimum arcing time of successful interruption decreased with the increasing of the average opening velocity. The minimum arcing gap was determined as 1.8 mm and it kept as a constant as the average opening velocity increased. The experimental results also showed a relationship between the arc energy density and the arc extinguishing gap, which acted a linear boundary between the successful and failure short-current interruptions. Although high-frequency circulating current exists in parallel-operated inverters, it has not attracted as much attention as low-frequency circulating current, and thus has not been analyzed in detail previously. In this paper, a mathematical model and analysis are presented, which reveal the spectrum components and their changing trends of the circulating currents caused by carrier phase differences. The impact of carrier phase difference on high-frequency circulating current is also analyzed and verified. A closed-loop control scheme is proposed to suppress the switching frequency circulating current caused by carrier phase difference. In addition, the deadbeat and closed-loop control are combined to suppress the low- and high-frequency circulating currents simultaneously, to improve the overall performance of circulating current suppression. This paper presents a fast and generalized space vector pulse width modulation (SVPWM) scheme for any multilevel inverter. The SVPWM scheme generates all the available switching states and switching sequences based on two simple and general mappings, and calculates the duty cycles simply as if for a two-level SVPWM, thus independent of the level number of the inverter. Because the switching states, duty cycles, and switching sequences are all obtained by simple calculation in the proposed SVPWM scheme, no lookup table is needed and the scheme is computationally fast. The generalized method of generating the switching states (first mapping), calculating the duty cycles, and determining the switching sequence (second mapping) is described in this paper. The scheme is suitable for any reference vector with any modulation index, and can be conveniently extended to meet specific requirements, such as symmetric switching sequences. Compared with prior methods, the SVPWM scheme proposed in this paper provides two more degrees of freedom, i.e., the adjustable switching sequences and duty cycles, thus offering significant flexibility for optimizing the performance of multilevel inverters. The influence of redundant switching sequences in the output phase voltage of inverters is demonstrated for a nine-level inverter. The paper proposes an optimal control strategy for the interleaved flyback based microinverter to improve its efficiency over the entire operating range. This control scheme is based on the choice of an appropriate operating mode [1-converter discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), 1-converter boundary conduction mode (BCM), 2-converter DCM, and 2-converter BCM] at various instantaneous power magnitudes. The proposed control method reduces the fixed losses associated with the gate driver and the transformer at the low power level. It also reduces the switching losses that may result due to the extremely high-frequency operation of the BCM at the low power level. Additionally, it also reduces the conduction losses through low current peak due to BCM and equal current sharing between the two converters at the high power level. Switching losses, due to the low-frequency operation of the BCM at a high power level, are also reduced. Operating mode selection of the interleaved inverter at a particular power level is based on the information of optimal efficiency. Detailed calculations of peak current references have been carried out for the various operating modes of the interleaved flyback based microinverter. Simulation and experimental results have validated that the proposed control method results in better efficiency compared with the conventional (DCM, hybrid DCM/BCM, hybrid 1-converter/2-converter) control methods with the output current total harmonic distortion remaining within the specified limits. A constant switching frequency hysteresis controller based on current error space vector (CESV) for two-level voltage source inverter fed induction motor (IM) drive is proposed in this paper. Here the stator voltages along the α- and β-axes are estimated using current error information and steady-state model of IM. Estimated stator voltages, switching dwell times, and instantaneous voltage error vectors are used in the online hysteresis boundary computations. The steady-state CESV boundaries and the phase voltage normalized harmonic spectrum of the proposed hysteresis controller at different speeds resembles that of a constant switching frequency voltage-controlled bus clamping pulse-width modulation-based drive. The proposed controller exhibits adjacent voltage vector switching, fast dynamic response under transient conditions, and has a simple controller implementation. A modified scheme for reactive power compensation using static VAr compensators (SVCs) has been proposed in this paper for unbalanced four-wire system. The conventional SVC-based scheme requires both delta ( $\Delta $ $)$ - and star (Y)-connected SVCs for the same purpose. The proposed scheme uses a single-equivalent delta-connected thyristor controlled reactor (TCR) along with a combination of Y- and $\Delta $- connected thyristor switched capacitors for this purpose. The single-equivalent $\Delta $ -TCR in the present scheme is the result of a virtual Y-TCR and the conventional $\Delta $-TCR. This can reduces effective number of switching devices, cost, complexity, and space requirement compared to the conventional SVC-based schemes. Moreover, the proposed scheme can have various advantageous features compared to newly used DSTATCOM. The proposed scheme can also prevent injection of triplen harmonics in to the line, which is injected by Y-TCR in the conventional scheme. An optimized switching function is adopted in the proposed scheme for reduction of additional injected harmonics by TCR. The optimized switching angles are computed offline using gravitational search algorithm and stored in the processor memory for online application. The effect of inverter dead time on the inverter output voltage is well studied in the literature. This paper studies the effect of the dead time on the inverter input current. An expression for the switching-cycle-averaged inverter input current including the dead time effect is derived, which shows the dead time effect to primarily result in a reduction in the average value of the inverter dc input current. The effect of dead time on the input current is incorporated into the dc-link dynamic model of a diode-bridge-rectifier (DBR) fed voltage source inverter (VSI). A switching-cycle-average model of a DBR-VSI-fed induction motor is proposed, which considers the effect of dead time on both the ac output voltage and dc input current of the VSI. The proposed average model is used to study the light-load instability phenomenon in a 100-kW open-loop motor drive. The proposed model is shown to predict the region of oscillatory behavior (i.e., region exhibiting light-load instability) with better accuracy than existing average models. The proposed model also accurately predicts the dc-link voltage swing at such oscillatory operating points. While being comparable in accuracy in predicting the system dynamics, the proposed model is much more computationally efficient than the state-of-the-art switching model. In this paper, a method has been proposed by which one can reduce the clock jitter and achieve almost flat frequency clock output from the phase-locked loop (PLL), independent of the power supply voltage fluctuation. These voltage fluctuations occur when a given chip comes out from the sleep mode to the active mode. This causes the chip to draw a hasty current, which in turn produces LdI/dt noise. That causes the voltage to drop and also to oscillate at the power delivery network’s resonance frequency. This power supply noise causes clock jitter. The voltage-controlled oscillator of the proposed PLL is designed at 45-nm technology such that when there is supply voltage variation, it is automatically corrected by a feedback methodology having only 11-ps response time delay, compared to 588-ps clock period. Simulation result shows that, for the proposed new PLL design, the number of places where the clock periods are altered due to this power supply voltage fluctuation is reduced. The performance of the proposed PLL design in terms of reduction of clock jitter, caused by the variation of power supply voltage and the flatness of the frequency versus power supply voltages, is tested by feeding the clock to a circuit (c17 of ISCAS’85) for the conventional methodology and also for our new methodology. It has been shown that, using the proposed method, the clock jitter caused by the power supply noise can be reduced by about 50% compared to the conventional design methodology. This paper presents a hybrid modulation technique consisting of singe-reference six-pulse-modulation (SRSPM) for front-end dc/dc converter and 33% modulation for three-phase inverter. Employing proposed novel SRSPM to control front-end dc/dc converter, high frequency (HF) pulsating dc voltage waveform is produced, which is equivalent to six-pulse output at 6× line frequency (rectified 6-pulse output of balanced three-phase ac waveforms) once averaged. It reduces the control complexity owing to single-reference three-phase modulation as compared to conventional three-reference three-phase SPWM. In addition, it relives the need of dc-link capacitor reducing the cost and volume. Eliminating dc link capacitor helps in retaining the modulated information at the input of the three-phase inverter. It needs only 33% (one third) modulation of the inverter devices to generate balanced three-phase voltage waveforms resulting in significant saving in (at least 66%) switching losses of inverter semiconductor devices. At any instant of line cycle, only two switches are required to switch at HF and remaining switches retain their unique state of either ON or OFF. Besides, inverter devices are not commutated when the current through them is at its peak value. Drop in switching loss accounts to be around 86.6% in comparison with a standard voltage source inverter (VSI) employing standard three-phase sine pulse width modulation. To regulate an output ac voltage in inverter systems having wide input dc voltage variation, a buck–boost power conditioning system is preferred. This paper proposes a novel high-efficiency quasi single-stage single-phase buck–boost inverter. The proposed inverter can solve current shoot-through problem and eliminate PWM dead time, which leads to greatly enhanced system reliability. It allows bidirectional power flow and can use MOSFET as switching device without body diode conducting. The reverse recovery issues and related loss of the MOSFET body diode can be eliminated. The use of MOSFET contributes to the reduction of switching and conduction losses. Also, the proposed inverter can be operated with simple pulse width modulation (PWM) control and can be designed at higher switching frequency to reduce the volume of passive components. The detailed experimental results are provided to show the advantages of the proposed inverter. In this paper, a novel space-vector pulse-width modulation (PWM) scheme for reducing the common-mode voltage (CMV) in the three-phase five-level active neutral-point clamped (5L-ANPC) inverter is proposed, where only the 55 selected voltage vectors among the entire 125 that produce low values of the CMV are utilized. This PWM scheme can significantly reduce the CMV without the increase of switching losses and total harmonic distortion of the output voltages. With the 55 selected voltage vectors, the inverter can still operate up to the maximum modulation index. In addition, the capacitor voltages are controlled by redundant switches of the 5L-ANPC inverters. Diode-assisted buck–boost voltage-source inverter achieves high voltage gain by introducing a switch-capacitor based high step-up dc–dc circuit between the dc source and inverter bridge. As for the unique structure, various pulse width modulation (PWM) strategies are developed with regard to the chopped intermediate dc-link voltage. In order to maximize voltage gain and increase efficiency, this paper proposes a novel PWM strategy. It regulates the average value of intermediate dc-link voltage in one switching time period ( Ts) the same as the instantaneous maximum value of three-phase line voltage by controlling the front boost circuit. Then, the equivalent switching frequency of power devices in the inverter bridge can be reduced to 1/3fs (fs = 1/Ts). The operating principle and closed-loop controller design are analyzed and verified by simulations and experiments. Compared with existing PWM strategies, the new control strategy demonstrates less power device requirement and higher efficiency in high voltage gain applications. It is a more competitive topology for wide range dc/ac voltage regulation in renewable energy applications. Furthermore, with new control strategy, the dc-side inductor current and capacitor voltage contains six-time line-frequency ripples. This paper proposes a new method of generating higher number of levels in the voltage waveform by stacking multilevel converters with lower voltage space vector structures. An important feature of this stacked structure is the use of low voltage devices while attaining higher number of levels. This will find extensive applications in electric vehicles since direct battery drive is possible. The voltages of all the capacitors in the structure can be controlled within a switching cycle using the switching state redundancies (pole voltage redundancies). This helps in reducing the capacitor size. Also, the capacitor voltages can be balanced irrespective of modulation index and load power factor. This paper investigates certain novel switching sequences involving division of active vector time for space vector-based pulsewidth modulation (PWM) generation for a voltage source inverter. This paper proposes two new sequences, and identifies all possible sequences, which result in the same average switching frequency as conventional space vector PWM (CSVPWM) at a given sampling frequency. This paper brings out a method for designing hybrid PWM techniques involving multiple sequences to reduce line current ripple. The three proposed hybrid PWM techniques (three-zone PWM, five-zone PWM and seven-zone PWM) employ three, five and seven different sequences, respectively, in every sector. Each sequence is employed in a spatial region within the sector where it results in the lowest rms current ripple over the given sampling period. The proposed techniques lead to a significant reduction in THD over CSVPWM at high line voltages. The five-zone technique results in the lowest THD among real-time techniques with uniform sampling, while the seven-zone technique is the best among real-time techniques with twin sampling rates. The flying capacitor multilevel inverter (FCMLI) is one of the well-known structures of multilevel inverters having attracted considerable attention because of its merits. In spite of its many advantages, it has some limitations such as high volume and complicated control method because of its bulky capacitors and their voltage balancing requirement. Moreover, the high number of power semiconductors required makes this structure susceptible to failure. To increase the ratio of the number of levels to the number of components, an uneven distribution of capacitor voltages has been suggested in previous reports; however, this approach complicates the control method. Up to now, almost all presented methods suffer from high computational load and/or structure-dependent algorithm. In this paper, a simple state-based and structure-independent method is proposed for capacitor voltage regulation. The proposed method is straightforward and can perform online computation of switching sequences in a computationally efficient manner without any need for stored information or look-up tables. The method is conveniently extendible to any number of cells and levels in an FCMLI structure with arbitrary dc link voltage distribution schemes. A capacitor voltage-balancing method for a nested neutral point clamped (NNPC) inverter is proposed in this paper. The NNPC inverter is a newly developed four-level voltage-source inverter for medium-voltage applications with properties such as operating over a wide range of voltages (2.4–7.2 kV) without the need for connecting power semiconductor in series and high-quality output voltage. The NNPC topology has two flying capacitors in each leg. In order to ensure that the inverter can operate normally and all switching devices share identical voltage stress, the voltage across each capacitor should be controlled and maintained at one-third of dc bus voltage. The proposed capacitor voltage-balancing method takes advantage of redundancy in phase switching states to control and balance flying capacitor voltages. Simple and effective logic tables are developed for the balancing control. The proposed method is easy to implement and needs very few computations. Moreover, the method is suitable for and easy to integrate with different pulse width modulation schemes. In this paper, a modified half-bridge (HB) resonant inverter topology with a dc-link neutral-point-clamped cell is proposed. A pseudo asymmetrical voltage-cancellation PWM method and a control strategy are introduced. The proposed topology can maximize the inverter output power factor, and minimize variations in the switching frequency. In addition, most switches are clamped to half of the dc input voltage at turn-off, increasing the overall efficiency of the system for a wide load range. The efficiency of the proposed inverter is improved up to 7% at light-load conditions compared with that of the conventional HB inverter. Informative expressions for performance comparison between the proposed inverter and its counterpart are provided. This paper proposes a new topology for an enhanced-boost Z-source inverter (ZSI) with combined two Z-impedance networks. By two Z-impedance networks and low shoot-through duty cycle, the proposed inverter produces high output voltage gain. In traditional ZSIs for high boosting voltage, a low modulation index is required; hence, under these conditions, the output voltage will have low quality with high total harmonic distortion. Compared with the conventional high-boost ZSI topologies, the proposed inverter uses shorter shoot-through duration and a larger modulation index to improve the output waveform quality. Comparison between the proposed topology and previously proposed schemes, in terms of inductor numbers, voltage and current stresses on elements, sizes of inductors and capacitors, efficiency, and switching device product (SDP) factors of diodes, is made, and the results verify the priority of the proposed topology. This paper introduces a novel pulse width modulation (PWM) technique to eliminate common-mode voltage in odd-multilevel inverters using the three zero common-mode vectors principles. Similarly, as in conventional PWM for multilevel inverters, this PWM can be properly depicted in an active two-level voltage inverter. With the help of two standardized PWM patterns, the characteristics of the PWM process can be fully explored in that active inverter as a switching time diagram and switching state sequence. Due to an unequal number of commutations of three phases in each sampling period, the switching loss is optimized by a proposed current-based mapping algorithm. The switching loss reduction can be up to 25% compared to the same PWM technique with nonoptimized algorithms. The PWM method has been then generalized as an equipotential PWM control, which is valid to both odd- and even-multilevel inverters . This paper presents a new hysteresis current regulation strategy for the neutral point clamped and flying capacitor (FC) three-level inverters. The strategy uses the measured average of the switched phase leg output voltage to adjust the controller hysteresis band as the load back EMF varies to maintain a near constant phase leg switching frequency. The phase leg switchings are then fine tuned to a fixed frequency clock to further improve frequency regulation. Next, the zero-crossings of the measured phase leg average voltages are used to select between positive and negative switched output voltage levels, so that only one hysteresis current regulator is required for the full inverter switched output voltage range. For the FC inverter, a state machine is then added to select between redundant switching states to maintain balanced capacitor voltages. Finally, the controller is extended to a three-phase system by subtracting the common mode interacting current from the total phase leg current error before making any switching decision. The resulting controller achieves a line-to-line harmonic performance that is very close to open-loop phase disposition pulse width modulation, while retaining all of the dynamic benefits of hysteresis current regulation. This paper presents a novel modulation strategy for a seven-phase three-level inverter, aimed at variable-speed drive applications. Developed space vector pulsewidth modulation (SVPWM) strategy is based on vector space decomposition (VSD) approach and an analysis of multidimensional space vector projections in mutually orthogonal planes. The algorithm represents an extension of a recently developed five-phase three-level SVPWM algorithm and is considerably more complex, due to the existence of three mutually orthogonal planes in a seven-phase system. The difficulties of generalization of space vector strategies, which stem from the nature of the multiphase systems, are highlighted. Increasing the number of phases from five to seven increases the number of switching states from 3 ^5 = 243 to 3^7 = 2187 and the number of orthogonal planes from two to three. This considerably affects the complexity of the offline calculations. However, the final implementation of the algorithm is simple. Developed SVPWM algorithm is compared to an equivalent carrier-based strategy and it is shown that they yield identical performance. Common-mode voltages (CMVs) can lead to premature failure of the motor insulation system in medium-voltage current-source-fed drives. By analyzing the CMV values at all switching states under different operating conditions of a current-source-inverter (CSI)-based motor drive, this paper first indicates that the CMV peaks are produced by the zero states in most of the cases. The nonzero-state (NZS) modulation techniques employed in voltage-source converters are adapted for use in a space-vector-modulated current-source converter (CSC) to reduce the CMV magnitude. For NZS modulation in CSCs, the nearest three-state (NTS) modulation sequences are designed with good low-order harmonic performances in their linear modulation region of m _a ≥ 0.67 and with no increase in the device switching frequency. A combined active-zero-state (AZS) modulation technique is also proposed as compensation, for a lower modulation index in the range of 0.4–0.67, when a compromise is made between the dc-link current minimization and high input power factor control. The simulation and experimental results are provided to validate the CMV reduction effects and harmonic performances of the NTS and combined AZS modulation methods in CSI-fed drives. The novel multilevel circuit topologies are proposed in this paper. They are called multilevel circuit topologies based on switched-capacitor and diode-clamped converters (MCT-BSD). The topology structure and the operation principle, including the working states’ transitions of the diode-clamped part, the voltages balancing mechanism of the dc link capacitors, and the pulse width modulated carrier control strategy are given. The switched-capacitor circuits contribute not only to balancing the voltages of capacitors but also to boosting the output voltage with a certain input dc voltage. The validity of the MCT-BSD is verified by simulations and experiments. The results show that balancing the voltages of capacitors, boosting the output voltages, and operating under the three-phase condition are all realized effectively in the MCT-BSD. When small currents are interrupted by a vacuum switch, it is well known that the chopping current and the associated overvoltage are observed. Many investigations on the current-chopping phenomena in alternating-current (ac) circuits have been carried out, but there are no data available on inverter circuits in spite of their recent wide application to synchronous motor systems. In this paper, chopping-current levels and the overvoltages in an inverter circuit under a simple three-level pulsewidth-modulated control are investigated. As a result, the mean chopping-current level is three to four times higher than that in an ac circuit. In particular, high chopping currents occur only when the timing of the current interruption by the vacuum switch synchronizes with that of the inverter's switching, which we call “double chopping.” High chopping current due to double chopping might be harmful since the high overvoltage proportional to the chopping-current level could damage the insulation of electric equipment. In this paper, a novel three-phase soft-switching inverter is presented. The inverter-switch turn on and turn off are performed under zero-voltage switching condition. This inverter has only one auxiliary switch, which is also soft switched. Having one auxiliary switch simplifies the control circuit considerably. The proposed inverter is analyzed, and its operating modes are explained in details. The design considerations of the proposed inverter are presented. This paper presents a new three-phase rectifier that allows the operation as rectifier or as inverter, with the use of three conventional switching cells. This reversion of power flow can be obtained simply by the inverting two reference currents. The system is analyzed as a connection of three independent lower order subsystems, controlled by sliding regime with decentralized switching scheme. The output voltage can be lower, equal, or greater than the peak of the input voltage. The operation stages, equations, control strategy, and design of the converter are presented. The switching frequency of power semiconductor devices in high-power medium voltage drives is limited due to high switching losses. These drives often comprise an LC output filter. The filter introduces a resonant circuit that may be excited, for instance, by fast control transients. One option to avoid such oscillations is to apply damping control methods, which on the other hand usually require switching frequencies well above the filter resonance. This paper presents a predictive stator current controller that avoids the excitation of the filter resonance, realizes active damping and enables fast current control while maintaining low switching frequency. Feasibility and good dynamic performance of the proposed control method is demonstrated by simulation results of a 2.4 kV induction motor drive and by experimental results obtained from a 55 kW prototype ac drive. This paper describes a 6.6-ky adjustable-speed motor drive for pumps and blowers without transformer. The power conversion system consists of a front-end diode rectifier, a live-level diode-clamped pulsewidth modulation (PWM) inverter with a voltage balancing circuit, and a hybrid active filer for harmonic- current mitigation of the diode rectifier. The control of the inverter is characterized by superimposing a third-harmonic zero-sequence voltage on each of the three-phase reference voltages to achieve the so-called overmodulation and reduce the switching stress of insulated gate bipolar transistors (IGBTs). A 200-V 5.5-kW down- scale model is designed, constructed, and tested with focus on the five-level PWM inverter and the voltage balancing circuit. Experimental results obtained from the 200-V downscale model verify the viability and effectiveness of the 6.6-ky adjustable-speed motor drive, showing that the four split dc capacitor voltages are well balanced in all the operating conditions and that the switching stress of the IGBTs is reduced at low modulation indexes. This paper presents the design of a dual Z-source inverter that can be used with either a single dc source or two isolated dc sources. Unlike traditional inverters, the integration of a properly designed Z-source network and semiconductor switches to the proposed dual inverter allows buck-boost power conversion to be performed over a wide modulation range, with three-level output waveforms generated. The connection of an additional transformer to the inverter ac output also allows all generic wye- or delta-connected loads with three-wire or four-wire configuration to be supplied by the inverter. Modulationwise, the dual inverter can be controlled using a carefully designed carrier-based pulsewidth-modulation (PWM) scheme that will always ensure balanced voltage boosting of the Z-source network while simultaneously achieving reduced common-mode switching. Because of the omission of dead-time delays in the dual-inverter PWM scheme, its switched common-mode voltage can be completely eliminated, unlike in traditional inverters, where narrow common- mode spikes are still generated. Under semiconductor failure conditions, the presented PWM schemes can easily be modified to allow the inverter to operate without interruption, and for cases where two isolated sources are used, zero common-mode voltage can still be ensured. These theoretical findings, together with the inverter practicality, have been confirmed in simulations both using PSIM with Matlab/Simulink coupler and experimentally using a laboratory-implemented inverter prototype. This paper proposes a compensation strategy for the unwanted disturbance voltage due to inverter nonlinearity. We employ an emerging learning technique called support vector regression (SVR). SVR constructs a motor dynamic voltage model by a linear combination of the current samples in real time. The model exhibits fast observer dynamics and robustness to observation noise. Then the disturbance voltage is estimated by subtracting the constructed voltage model from the current controller output. The proposed method compensates for all of the inverter nonlinearity factors at the same time. All the processes in estimating distortions are independent of the dead time and power device parameters. From the analysis of the effect on current measurement errors, we confirmed that the sampling error had little negative impact on the proposed estimation method. The concept of hybrid clamped is proposed in multilevel-inverter topologies, and a hybrid-clamped multilevel-inverter topology comprising active and passive clamping devices is presented in this paper. In this topology, the dc-link capacitor voltages can be balanced without additional circuitry or separated dc voltage sources, regardless of load characteristics. It can be used in real and reactive power conversion applications. The topology structure, operating principle, and self-voltage balancing ability are analyzed. A soft-commutating method and control scheme for an isolated boost full bridge converter is proposed in this paper to implement dual operation of the well-known soft-switching full bridge dc/dc buck converter for bidirectional high power applications. It provides a unique commutation logic to minimize a mismatch between current in the current-fed inductor and current in the leakage inductance of the transformer when commutation takes place, significantly reducing the power rating for a voltage clamping snubber and enabling use of a simple passive clamped snubber. To minimize the mismatch, the method and control scheme utilizes the resonant tank and freewheeling path in the existing full bridge inverter at the voltage-fed side to preset the current in the leakage inductance of the transformer in a resonant manner. Zero-voltage-switching is also achieved for all the switches at the voltage-fed side inverter in boost mode operation. The proposed soft-commutating method is verified through boost mode operation of a 3-kW bidirectional isolated full bridge dc/dc converter developed for fuel cell electric vehicle applications. The tested result verified the isolated boost converter can operate at an input voltage of 8.5–15 V and an output voltage of 250–420 V with a peak efficiency of 93% and an average efficiency of 88% at 55-kHz switching frequency with 72 °C automotive coolant.
