Metaheuristic optimization algorithms (MHA) play a significant role in obtaining the best (optimal) values of the system's parameters to improve its performance. This role is significantly apparent when dealing with systems where the classical analytical methods fail. Fractional-order (FO) systems have not yet shown an easy procedure to deal with the determination of their optimal parameters through traditional methods. In this paper, a recent, systematic. And comprehensive review is presented to highlight the role of MHA in obtaining the best set of gains and orders for FO controllers. The systematic review starts by exploring the most relevant publications related to the MHA and the FO controllers. The study is focused on the most popular controllers such as the FO-PI, FO-PID, FO Type-1 fuzzy-PID, and FO Type-2 fuzzy-PID. The time domain is restricted in the articles published through the last decade (2014:2023) in the most reputed databases such as Scopus, Web of Science, Science Direct, and Google Scholar. The identified number of papers, from the entire databases, has reached 850 articles. A Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) methodology was applied to the initial set of articles to be screened and filtered to end up with a final list that contains 82 articles. Then, a thorough and comprehensive study was applied to the final list. The results showed that Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is the most attractive optimizer to the researchers to be used in the optimal parameters identification of the FO controllers as it attains about 25% of the published papers. In addition, the papers that used PSO as an optimizer have gained a high citation number despite the fact that the Chaotic Atom Search Optimization (ChASO) is the highest one, but it is used only once. Furthermore, the Integral of the Time-Weighted Absolute Error (ITAE) is the best nominated cost function. Based on our comprehensive literature review, this appears to be the first review paper that systematically and comprehensively addresses the optimization of the parameters of the fractional-order PI, PID, Type-1, and Type-2 fuzzy controllers with the use of MHAs. The optimization and allocation of transport cost savings among stakeholders are two important issues that influence the satisfaction of information providers, drivers and passengers in ridesharing recommendation systems. For optimization issues, finding optimal solutions for nonconvex constrained discrete ridesharing optimization problems poses a challenge due to computational complexity. For the allocation of transport cost savings issues, the development of an effective method to allocate cost savings in ridesharing recommendation systems is an urgent need to improve the acceptability of ridesharing. The hybridization of different metaheuristic approaches has demonstrated its advantages in tackling the complexity of optimization problems. The principle of the hybridization of metaheuristic approaches is similar to a marriage of two people with the goal of having a happy ending. However, the effectiveness of hybrid metaheuristic algorithms is unknown a priori and depends on the problem to be solved. This is similar to a situation where no one knows whether a marriage will have a happy ending a priori. Whether the hybridization of the Firefly Algorithm (FA) with Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) or Differential Evolution (DE) can work effectively in solving ridesharing optimization problems needs further study. Motivated by deficiencies in existing studies, this paper focuses on the effectiveness of hybrid metaheuristic algorithms for solving ridesharing problems based on the hybridization of FA with PSO or the hybridization of FA with DE. Another focus of this paper is to propose and study the effectiveness of a new method to allocate ridesharing cost savings to the stakeholders in ridesharing systems. The developed hybrid metaheuristic algorithms and the allocation method have been compared with examples of several application scenarios to illustrate their effectiveness. The results indicate that hybridizing FA with PSO creates a more efficient algorithm, whereas hybridizing FA with DE does not lead to a more efficient algorithm for the ridesharing recommendation problem. Conventionally, researchers have favored the model-based control scheme for controlling gantry crane systems. However, this method necessitates a substantial investment of time and resources in order to develop an accurate mathematical model of the complex crane system. Recognizing this challenge, the current paper introduces a novel data-driven control scheme that relies exclusively on input and output data. Undertaking a couple of modifications to the conventional marine predators algorithm (MPA), random average marine predators algorithm (RAMPA) with tunable adaptive coefficient to control the step size (CF) has been proposed in this paper as an enhanced alternative towards fine-tuning data-driven multiple-node hormone regulation neuroendocrine-PID (MnHR-NEPID) controller parameters for the multi-input–multi-output (MIMO) gantry crane system. First modification involved a random average location calculation within the algorithm's updating mechanism to solve the local optima issue. The second modification then introduced tunable CF that enhanced search capacity by enabling users' resilience towards attaining an offsetting level of exploration and exploitation phases. Effectiveness of the proposed method is evaluated based on the convergence curve and statistical analysis of the fitness function, the total norms of error and input, Wilcoxon's rank test, time response analysis, and robustness analysis under the influence of external disturbance. In the current complex cyber environment, malicious attacks take various forms and constantly change. To overcome the problems of low detection efficiency and high false alarm rate in traditional intrusion detection techniques, a new method of network intrusion detection combining the variable scale chaos bat (MSCB) algorithm and BP neural network (BPNN) called MSCB-BPNN is proposed in this paper. In the proposed approach, a new MSCB algorithm is proposed to improve the BPNN by optimizing its thresholds and weights so as to prevent it from falling into local optimum. To verify the practical classification performance of the proposed method for intrusion detection, some experiments are carried out. In these experiments, the proposed approach is compared with BPNN, SA-BPNN, and GA-BPNN on the benchmark intrusion detection datasets KDD cup 99 and UNSW-NB15. The experimental results show that the accuracy of the proposed method can reach 99.4% and 99.8% accuracy on the KDD cup 99 training and test sets, respectively, while 89.0% and 93.9% accuracy on the UNSW-NB15 training and test sets, respectively, which are higher than BPNN, SA-BPNN, and GA-BPNN. The growth optimizer (GO) is a novel metaheuristic algorithm designed to tackle complex optimization problems. Despite its advantages of simplicity and high efficiency, GO often encounters localized stagnation when dealing with discretized, high-dimensional, and multi-constraint problems. To address these issues, this paper proposes an enhanced version of GO called CODGBGO. This algorithm incorporates three strategies to enhance its performance. Firstly, the Circle-OBL initialization strategy is employed to enhance the quality of the initial population. Secondly, an exploration strategy is implemented to improve population diversity and the algorithm's ability to escape local optimum traps. Finally, the exploitation strategy is utilized to enhance the convergence speed and accuracy of the algorithm. To validate the performance of CODGBGO, it is applied to solve the CEC2017, CEC2020, 18 feature selection problems, and 4 real engineering optimization problems. Studies indicate cardiac arrhythmia is one of the leading causes of death in the world. The risk of a stroke may be reduced when an irregular and fast heart rate is diagnosed. Since it is non-invasive, electrocardiograms are often used to detect arrhythmias. Human data input may be error-prone and time-consuming because of these limitations. For early detection of heart rhythm problems, it is best to use deep learning models. In this paper, a hybrid bio-inspired algorithm has been proposed by combining whale optimization (WOA) with adaptive particle swarm optimization (APSO). The WOA is a recently developed meta-heuristic algorithm. APSO is used to increase convergence speed. When compared to conventional optimization methods, the two techniques work better together. MIT-BIH dataset has been utilized for training, testing and validating this model. The recall, accuracy, and specificity are used to measure efficiency of the proposed method. The metaheuristic algorithms are widely used in solving the parameters of the optimization problem. The marine predators algorithm (MPA) is a novel population-based intelligent algorithm. Although MPA has shown a talented foraging strategy, it still needs a balance of exploration and exploitation. Therefore, a multi-stage improvement of marine predators algorithm (MSMPA) is proposed in this paper. The algorithm retains the advantage of multistage search and introduces a linear flight strategy in the middle stage to enhance the interaction between predators. Predators further away from the historical optimum are required to move, increasing the exploration capability of the algorithm. In the middle and late stages, the search mechanism of particle swarm optimization (PSO) is inserted, which enhances the exploitation capability of the algorithm. This means that the stochasticity is decreased, that is the optimal region where predators jumping out is effectively stifled. At the same time, self-adjusting weight is used to regulate the convergence speed of the algorithm, which can balance the exploration and exploitation capability of the algorithm. The algorithm is applied to different types of CEC2017 benchmark test functions and three multidimensional nonlinear structure design optimization problems, compared with other recent algorithms. The Honey Badger Algorithm (HBA) is a novel meta-heuristic algorithm proposed recently inspired by the foraging behavior of honey badgers. The dynamic search behavior of honey badgers with sniffing and wandering is divided into exploration and exploitation in HBA, which has been applied in photovoltaic systems and optimization problems effectively. However, HBA tends to suffer from the local optimum and low convergence. To alleviate these challenges, an improved HBA (IHBA) through fusing multi-strategies is presented in the paper. Wireless Sensor Networks are booming with the development of computer technology, network communication technology, and sensor technology. However, the question of how to use fewer nodes to achieve maximum coverage still exists. In this paper, a two-layer Surrogate-Assisted Phasmatodea Population Evolution (SAPPE) is proposed for 3D coverage of wireless sensors by combining the characteristics of meta-heuristic algorithms and surrogate models. In this algorithm, Radial Basis Function Networks are used to construct the surrogate model, and the two surrogate models are global surrogate-assisted and local surrogate-assisted, respectively. The global-surrogate model is used to smooth the fitness function, and the local surrogate-assisted model is used to find the optimal value accurately. They use the same archive DataBase (DB) to store particle positions and true fitness values. However, the number of particles involved in the creation of the surrogate-assisted model is different. Seven benchmark functions are used to test and analyze the algorithm, and the results show that the algorithm has good performance. Also, the algorithm verified the significance of the algorithm using Wilcoxon rank test. The result shows that the proposed algorithm is effective compared with PPE, PSO, PPSO, FMO, and BA. This paper compares the number of nodes and coverage radius using different algorithms to ensure maximum coverage. In recent years, an increasing number of population-based metaheuristic algorithms have been proposed to solve the flexible job-shop scheduling problem (FJSP) according to its practicality and complexity. Most of these algorithms are single-population-based and hence are very susceptible to becoming trapped in local optimal values. Thus, multipopulation methods are widely used to improve these algorithms, resulting in multipopulation algorithms. These multipopulation algorithms have been widely studied in the context of single-layer complex networks recently. However, coupled networks used to control two (or more) algorithms simultaneously to get a better algorithm are always ignored in literature. Therefore, in this paper, using coupled scale-free networks (with different scaling exponents) to control the genetic algorithm (GA) and the invasive weed optimization (IWO) simultaneously, a multipopulation GA/IWO with coupled scale-free networks (MPGAIWO-SF) is proposed to solve FJSP. Then, we study how some parameters (e.g., subpopulation size, subpopulation number, and scaling exponent) of MPGAIWO-SF affect its performance, which is also ignored in literature. The simulation results illustrate that (1) the performance of MPGAIWO-SF is significantly improved compared with that of GA and IWO; (2) as the subpopulation size increases, the performance of MPGAIWO-SF first becomes better and then remains almost unchanged; (3) as the subpopulation number increases, the performance of MPGAIWO-SF first becomes better and then decreases rapidly; and (4) the performance of MPGAIWO-SF becomes worse slightly as the scaling exponent decreases. With the rapid development of the geometric modeling industry and computer technology, the design and shape optimization of complex curve shapes have now become a very important research topic in CAGD. In this paper, the Hybrid Artificial Hummingbird Algorithm (HAHA) is used to optimize complex composite shape-adjustable generalized cubic Ball (CSGC–Ball, for short) curves. Firstly, the Artificial Hummingbird algorithm (AHA), as a newly proposed meta-heuristic algorithm, has the advantages of simple structure and easy implementation and can quickly find the global optimal solution. However, there are still limitations, such as low convergence accuracy and the tendency to fall into local optimization. Therefore, this paper proposes the HAHA based on the original AHA, combined with the elite opposition-based learning strategy, PSO, and Cauchy mutation, to increase the population diversity of the original algorithm, avoid falling into local optimization, and thus improve the accuracy and rate of convergence of the original AHA. Twenty-five benchmark test functions and the CEC 2022 test suite are used to evaluate the overall performance of HAHA, and the experimental results are statistically analyzed using Friedman and Wilkerson rank sum tests. The experimental results show that, compared with other advanced algorithms, HAHA has good competitiveness and practicality. Secondly, in order to better realize the modeling of complex curves in engineering, the CSGC–Ball curves with global and local shape parameters are constructed based on SGC–Ball basis functions. By changing the shape parameters, the whole or local shape of the curves can be adjusted more flexibly. Finally, in order to make the constructed curve have a more ideal shape, the CSGC–Ball curve-shape optimization model is established based on the minimum curve energy value, and the proposed HAHA is used to solve the established shape optimization model. This paper presents an improved arithmetic optimization algorithm that incorporates hybrid elite pool strategies to address the limitations of the arithmetic optimization algorithm (AOA). In AOA, the linear mathematical optimization acceleration (MOA) function cannot balance global exploitation and local exploration well. Therefore, the accuracy and convergence speed of the algorithm cannot be guaranteed. To improve the performance of AOA, this paper reconstructed a nonlinear MOA function, which is expected to balance the exploitation and the exploration of AOA. Furthermore, four hybrid elite pool strategies are integrated to enhance the ability to escape local optima. The Internet of Things (IoT) is constantly evolving. The variety of IoT applications has caused new demands to emerge on users' part and competition between computing service providers. On the one hand, an IoT application may exhibit several important criteria, such as deadline and runtime simultaneously, and it is confronted with resource limitations and high energy consumption on the other hand. This has turned to adopting a computing environment and scheduling as a fundamental challenge. To resolve the issue, IoT applications are considered in this paper as a workflow composed of a series of interdependent tasks. The tasks in the same workflow (at the same level) are subject to priorities and deadlines for execution, making the problem far more complex and closer to the real world. In this paper, a hybrid Particle Swarm Optimization and Simulated Annealing algorithm (PSO–SA) is used for prioritizing tasks and improving fitness function. Our proposed method managed the task allocation and optimized energy consumption and makespan at the fog-cloud environment nodes. Metaheuristics are widely used in science and industry because it as a high-level heuristic technique can provide robust or advanced solutions compared to classical search algorithms. Flow Regime Algorithm is a novel physics-based optimization approach recently proposed, and it is one of the candidate algorithms for solving complex optimization problems because of its few parameter configurations, simple coding, and good performance. However, the population that initialized randomly may have poor diversity issues, resulting in insufficient global search, and premature convergence to local optimum. To solve this problem, in this paper, a novel enhanced Flow Regime Algorithm based on opposition learning scheme is proposed. The proposed algorithm introduces the opposition-based learning strategy into the generation of some populations to enhance the global search performance while maintaining a fast convergence rate. In order to verify the performance of the proposed algorithm, 23 benchmark numerical optimization functions were studied experimentally in detail and compared with six well-known algorithms. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm outperforms all other metaheuristic algorithms in all unimodal functions with higher accuracy, and can obtain competitive results on more multimodal cases. A statistical comparison shows that the proposed algorithm has superiority. Photovoltaic (PV) systems utilize maximum power point tracking (MPPT) controllers to optimize power output amidst varying environmental conditions. However, the presence of multiple peaks resulting from partial shading poses a challenge to the tracking operation. Under partial shade conditions, the global maximum power point (GMPP) may be missed by most traditional maximum power point tracker. The flower pollination algorithm (FPA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) are two examples of metaheuristic techniques that can be used to solve the issue of failing to track the GMPP. This paper discusses and resolves all issues associated with using the standard FPA method as the MPPT for PV systems. The first issue is that the initial values of pollen are determined randomly at first, which can lead to premature convergence. To minimize the convergence time and enhance the possibility of detecting the GMPP, the initial pollen values were modified so that they were near the expected peak positions. Secondly, in the modified FPA, population fitness and switch probability values both influence swapping between two-mode optimization, which may improve the flower pollination algorithm's tracking speed. The performance of the modified flower pollination algorithm (MFPA) is assessed through a comparison with the perturb and observe (P&O) method and the standard FPA method. The simulation results reveal that under different partial shading conditions, the tracking time for MFPA is 0.24, 0.24, 0.22, and 0.23 s, while for FPA, it is 0.4, 0.35, 0.45, and 0.37 s. Additionally, the simulation results demonstrate that MFPA achieves higher MPPT efficiency in the same four partial shading conditions, with values of 99.98%, 99.90%, 99.93%, and 99.26%, compared to FPA with MPPT efficiencies of 99.93%, 99.88%, 99.91%, and 99.18%. The marine predators algorithm (MPA) is a metaheuristic algorithm for solving optimization problems. MPA divides the whole optimization process into three phases evenly, and each phase corresponds to a different search agent update strategy. Such a setup makes MPA inflexible when facing different optimization problems, which affects the optimization performance. In this paper, we propose a novel modified MPA hybridizing by Q-learning (QMPA), which applies reinforcement learning to the selection of update strategy, and selects the most appropriate position update strategy for search agents in different iteration stages and states. It can effectively compensate for the deficiency of MPA's adaptive ability when facing different optimization problems. The performance of QMPA is tested on classical benchmark functions, the CEC2014 test suite, and engineering problems. In the classical benchmark functions test, QMPA is compared with MPA in 10, 30, and 50 dimensions. QMPA performs better than MPA for seven of the ten functions when the dimension is 10 and 30. The results of dimension 50 show that QMPA outperforms MPA in 5 functions and is close to it in 4 functions. Then, comparing QMPA with algorithms such as grey wolf optimizer, particle swarm optimization, slime mould algorithm, sine cosine algorithm, reptile search algorithm, and aquila optimizer, the results show that QMPA has the best performance on 22 of the total 30 functions in the CEC2014 test suite. Finally, QMPA is tested on two commonly used real-world engineering problems and gives the most optimal results. The Equilibrium Optimizer (EO) algorithm is a new meta-heuristic algorithm that uses an equilibrium pool and candidates to update particles (solutions). EO algorithm not only has strong exploitation and exploration capabilities but also avoids falling into the local optimum. This paper proposes an Enhanced Equilibrium Optimizer (EEO) Algorithm based on three communication strategies to solve the Job Shop Scheduling Problem (JSSP). At the same time, the Enhanced Equilibrium Optimizer (EEO1, EEO2, EEO3) Algorithms are compared with the existing optimization methods, including Grey Wolf Optimizer (GWO), Multi-Version Optimizer (MVO), Differential Evolution (DE), Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA). Experiments show that the EO algorithm is significantly better than GWO, MVO, DE, WOA. EO algorithm is mainly used to optimize continuous problems, but JSSP is a discrete application, so the standard equilibrium optimizer algorithm needs to be discretized. Salp swarm algorithm (SSA) is an excellent meta‐heuristic algorithm, which has been widely used in the engineering field. However, there is still room for improvement in terms of convergence rate and solution accuracy. Therefore, this paper proposes an enhanced parallel salp swarm algorithm based on the Taguchi method (PTSSA). The parallel trick is to split the initial population uniformly into several subgroups and then exchange information among the subgroups after a fixed number of iterations, which speeds up the convergence. Communication strategies are an important component of parallelism techniques. The Taguchi method is widely used in the industry for optimizing product and process conditions. In this paper, the Taguchi method is adopted into the parallelization technique as a novel communication strategy, which improves the robustness and accuracy of the solution. The proposed algorithm was also tested under the CEC2013 test suite. Experimental results show that PTSSA is more competitive than some common algorithms. In addition, PTSSA is applied to optimize the operation of a heatless combined cooling‐power system. The paper proposed a new algorithm to solve the Multiskill Resource-Constrained Project Scheduling Problem (MS-RCPSP), a combinational optimization problem proved in NP-Hard classification, so it cannot get an optimal solution in polynomial time. The NP-Hard problems can be solved using metaheuristic methods to evolve the population over many generations, thereby finding approximate solutions. However, most metaheuristics have a weakness that can be dropping into local extreme after a number of evolution generations. This paper presents a circular recycling system for end-of-life tires (ELTs) under extended producer responsibility (EPR) by integrating Individual Producer Responsibility (IPR) and Industrial Symbiosis (IS). The system aims for sustainability and circularity in the tire industry, avoiding the detrimental effects of landfilling. It focuses on emission-free recyclers to create IS for ensuring environmental sustainability. Additionally, the system uses a "dynamic pricing strategy" to take-back ELTs from consumers. This paper also presents a "multi-period scenario-based nonlinear mixed integer programming" model to investigate the economic sustainability of the proposed system under uncertainty. Three different evolutionary metaheuristic algorithms, "genetic algorithm (GA)-based simulated annealing", "GA" and a new variant of "particle swarm optimization" are used to obtain the solution of the model. Reliability-based design is related to the performance analysis of engineering systems. The redundancy allocation problem is one of the most common problems in the reliability-based design approach. The redundancy allocation problem determines the redundancy level of components in a system to maximize system reliability, subject to several constraints. In recent years, obtaining solutions to reliability-related redundancy allocation problems by means of evolving meta-heuristic algorithms has appealed to researchers due to the several drawbacks of classical mathematical methods. Meta-heuristics have shown the potential of obtaining precise solution in optimization problems and many techniques have been applied in the literature for optimal redundancy allocation. In this paper, a recently developed Jaya optimization algorithm is proposed to be applied for redundancy allocation to maximize system reliability. The Jaya algorithm is a simple, population-based intelligent meta-heuristic algorithm consisting of a single phase and an algorithm-specific parameter-less algorithm. This paper aims to present an application of the Jaya algorithm for searching the optimal solution of two redundancy allocation problems from the literature with nonlinear constraints so that system reliability is maximized. The first problem is the over speed protection system for a gas turbine, whose control system is modelled as a four-stage series system. The objective is to determine the optimal level of redundancy of the valves of the protection system under cost and weight constraints. The second one is the redundancy allocation problem of a five-stage series system with volume, weight, and cost constraints. Photovoltaic (PV) generation systems that are partially shaded have a non-linear operating curve that is highly dependent on temperature and irradiance conditions. Shading from surrounding objects like clouds, trees, and buildings creates partial shading conditions (PSC) that can cause hot spot formation on PV panels. To prevent this, bypass diodes are installed in parallel across each panel, resulting in a global maximum power point (GMPP) and multiple local maximum power points (LMPPs) on the power-voltage (P-V) curve. Traditional methods for maximum power point tracking (MPPT), such as perturb and observe (P&O) and incremental conductance (INC), converge for LMPPs on the P-V curve, but metaheuristic algorithms can track the GMPP effectively. This paper proposes a new, efficient, and robust GMPP tracking technique based on a nature-inspired algorithm called Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves (AFT). Utilizing the AFT algorithm for MPPT in PV systems has several novel features and advantages, including its adaptability, exploration-exploitation balance, simplicity, efficiency, and innovative approach. These characteristics make AFT a promising choice for enhancing the efficiency of PV systems under varied circumstances. The performance of the proposed method in tracking the GMPP is evaluated using a simulation model under MATLAB/Simulink environment, the achieved simulation results are compared to particle swarm optimization (PSO). Path planning is a prevalent process that helps mobile robots find the most efficient pathway from the starting position to the goal position to avoid collisions with obstacles. In this paper, we propose a novel path planning algorithm–Intermediary RRT∗-PSO-by utilizing the exploring speed advantages of Rapidly exploring Random Trees and using its solution to feed to a metaheuristic-based optimizer, Particle swarm optimization (PSO), for fine-tuning and enhancement. In Phase 1, the start and goal trees are initialized at the starting and goal positions, respectively, and the intermediary tree is initialized at a random unexplored region of the search space. The trees were grown until one met the other and then merged and re-initialized in other unexplored regions. If the start and goal trees merge, the first solution is found and passed through a minimization process to reduce unnecessary nodes. Phase 2 begins by feeding the minimized solution from Phase 1 as the global best particle of PSO to optimize the path. Golden jackal optimization (GJO) is an effective metaheuristic algorithm that imitates the cooperative hunting behavior of the golden jackal. However, since the update of the prey's position often depends on the male golden jackal and there is insufficient diversity of golden jackals in some cases, it is prone to falling into a local optimal optimum. In order to address these drawbacks of GJO, this paper proposes an improved algorithm, called a hybrid GJO and golden sine (S) algorithm (Gold-SA) with dynamic lens-imaging (L) learning (LSGJO). First, this paper proposes novel dual golden spiral update rules inspired by Gold-SA. These rules give GJO the ability to think like a human (Gold-SA), making the golden jackal more intelligent in the process of preying, and improving the ability and efficiency of optimization. Second, a novel nonlinear dynamic decreasing scaling factor is introduced into the lens-imaging learning operator to maintain the population diversity. The performance of LSGJO is verified through 23 classical benchmark functions and 3 complex design problems in real scenarios. This paper proposes a novel hybrid algorithm, named Multi-Strategy Hybrid Harris Hawks Tunicate Swarm Optimization Algorithm (MSHHOTSA). The primary objective of MSHHOTSA is to address the limitations of the tunicate swarm algorithm, which include slow optimization speed, low accuracy, and premature convergence when dealing with complex problems. Firstly, inspired by the idea of the neighborhood and thermal distribution map, the hyperbolic tangent domain is introduced to modify the position of new tunicate individuals, which can not only effectively enhance the convergence performance of the algorithm but also ensure that the data generated between the unknown parameters and the old parameters have a similar distribution. Secondly, the nonlinear convergence factor is constructed to replace the original random factor c1 to coordinate the algorithm's local exploitation and global exploration performance, which effectively improves the ability of the algorithm to escape extreme values and fast convergence. Finally, the swarm update mechanism of the HHO algorithm is introduced into the position update of the TSA algorithm, which further balances the local exploitation and global exploration performance of the MSHHOTSA. The proposed algorithm was evaluated on eight standard benchmark functions, CEC2019 benchmark functions, four engineering design problems, and a PID parameter optimization problem. It was compared with seven recently proposed metaheuristic algorithms, including HHO and TSA. The results were analyzed and discussed using statistical indicators such as mean, standard deviation, Wilcoxon's rank sum test, and average running time. The ideal gas molecular movement (IGMM) as a metaheuristic optimization method is a prominent option for solving optimization problems. However, in some complex cases, IGMM may possess premature convergence or get trapped in local optima. Therefore, to tackle these issues, this paper indicates a new modified IGMM algorithm named opposition‐based IGMM, which has been incorporated with opposition based learning (OBL), Cauchy mutation (CM), velocity clamping (VC), and mirror operator (MO) to enhance its performance. OBL, VC, and MO improve the convergence of IGMM, whereas CM assists IGMM to escape local optima. This paper suggests the optimized squared-off cascades (SOCs) with a certain number of gas centrifuges (GCs) to separate stable isotopes, such as the lightest and heaviest isotopes of molybdenum (100Mo and 92Mo) up to 99.9% richness, using the particle swarm optimization (PSO), the whale optimization algorithm (WOA), and the dragonfly algorithm (DA). To do this, the SOC-PSO, SOC-WOA, and SOC-DA codes are developed to optimize the parameters of SOCs. Then the performances of these codes in optimizing SOCs for separating each of 92Mo and 100Mo isotopes are compared based on the recovery factor, the feed intake, and the amount of production with the use of 120 gas centrifuges. The recovery coefficients of SOCs for 92Mo and 100Mo isotopes obtained by the SOC-PSO code are 82 and 80%, respectively. Finally, the performances of the PSO, WOA, and DA algorithms in optimizing SOCs for each of light and heavy isotopes are compared, and a higher efficiency of the PSO algorithm is revealed. Combinatorial metaheuristic optimization algorithms have newly become a remarkable domain for handling real-world and engineering design optimization problems. In this paper, the Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA) and the Woodpecker Mating Algorithm (WMA) are combined as HWMWOA. WOA is an effective algorithm with the advantage of global searching ability, where the control parameters are very less. But WOA is more probable to get trapped in the local optimum points and miss diversity of population, therefore suffering from premature convergence. The fundamental goal of the HWMWOA algorithm is to overcome the drawbacks of WOA. This betterment includes three basic mechanisms. First, a modified position update equation of WMA by efficient exploration ability is embedded into HWMWOA. Second, a new self-regulation Cauchy mutation operator is allocated to the proposed hybrid method. Finally, an arithmetic spiral movement with a novel search guide pattern is used in the suggested HWMWOA algorithm. At complex industrial sites, the high number of large consumers that make the technological process chain requires direct supply from the main high-voltage grid. Often, for operational flexibility and redundancy, the main external supply is complemented with small local generation units. When a contingency occurs in the grid and the main supply is cut off, the local generators are used to keep in operation the critical consumers until the safe shutdown of the entire process can be achieved. In these scenarios, in order to keep the balance between local generation and consumption, the classic approach is to use under-frequency load-shedding schemes. This paper proposes a new load-shedding algorithm that uses particle swarm optimization and forecasted load data to provide a low-cost alternative to under-frequency methods. One of the challenging issues among researchers is high-dimensional data which contains a large number of unwanted, redundant, and irrelevant features. These redundant or unwanted features reduce the accuracy of machine learning models. Therefore, to solve this problem nowadays metaheuristic techniques are being used. The paper presents both surveys as well as comparison of five metaheuristic algorithms for feature selection. A wrapper-based feature selection approach using five nature-inspired techniques for feature selection has been applied. The binary version of the five swarm-based nature-inspired algorithms (NIAs), namely particle swarm optimization, whale optimization algorithm (WOA), grey wolf optimization (GWO), firefly algorithm, and bat algorithm. WOA and GWO are recent algorithms used for finding optimal feature subsets when there is no empirical information. The S-shape transfer function has been used to convert the continuous value to binary form and K-nearest neighbor is used to calculate the classification accuracy of selected feature subsets. To validate the results of the selected NIAs eleven benchmark datasets from the UCI repository are used. This research paper proposes the application of a meta-heuristic algorithm, namely the water cycle algorithm (WCA), for optimizing the performance of a multi-level inverter for a distributed energy resources-based smart grid system. The aim is to find the optimal switching angles to achieve selective harmonic elimination. To exhibit the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and evaluate the results, a three-phase seven-level cascaded multilevel inverter (CHBMLI) is used. This paper demonstrates the efficacy of the proposed algorithm by performing a rigorous comparison with existing meta-heuristic algorithms. Independent sample t-tests for different population sizes are demonstrated, which reflect the better performance of the proposed algorithm's results. For the comparison, crucial parameters for optimization, including population size and number of iterations, are kept the same for the proposed WCA and other algorithms. Since we are solving a minimization problem, a lower fitness value is focused. In our research paper, we show how the proposed algorithm attains a lower fitness value and fast rate of convergence. For different values of the modulation index, WCA performs better than particle swarm optimization (PSO) and the firefly algorithm (FA). For a particular case of a modulation index value of 0.8, the minimum value found by WCA over 50 samples is 0.0001, whereas that of PSO and FA are 0.0223 and 0.0433, respectively, which shows that WCA has better accuracy. The results clearly present that the proposed algorithm provides a competitive percentage of elimination of selected harmonics when compared with other meta-heuristic algorithms. The optimization of industrial processes is a critical task for leveraging profitability and sustainability. To ensure the selection of optimum process parameter levels in any industrial process, numerous metaheuristic algorithms have been proposed so far. However, many algorithms are either computationally too expensive or become trapped in the pit of local optima. To counter these challenges, in this paper, a hybrid metaheuristic called PSO-GSA is employed that works by combining the iterative improvement capability of particle swarm optimization (PSO) and gravitational search algorithm (GSA). A binary PSO is also fused with GSA to develop a BPSO-GSA algorithm. Both the hybrid algorithms i.e., PSO-GSA and BPSO-GSA, are compared against traditional algorithms, such as tabu search (TS), genetic algorithm (GA), differential evolution (DE), GSA and PSO algorithms. Moreover, another popular hybrid algorithm DE-GA is also used for comparison. Since earlier works have already studied the performance of these algorithms on mathematical benchmark functions, in this paper, two real-world-applicable independent case studies on biodiesel production are considered. Based on the extensive comparisons, significantly better solutions are observed in the PSO-GSA algorithm as compared to the traditional algorithms. Metaheuristic algorithms are often applied to global function optimization problems. To overcome the poor real-time performance and low precision of the basic salp swarm algorithm, this paper introduces a novel hybrid algorithm inspired by the perturbation weight mechanism. The proposed perturbation weight salp swarm algorithm has the advantages of a broad search scope and a strong balance between exploration and exploitation and retains a relatively low computational complexity when dealing with numerous large-scale problems. A new coefficient factor is introduced to the basic salp swarm algorithm, and new update strategies for the leader position and the followers are introduced in the search phase. The new leader position updating strategy has a specific bounded scope and strong search performance, thus accelerating the iteration process. The new follower updating strategy maintains the diversity of feasible solutions while reducing the computational load. This paper describes the application of the proposed algorithm to low-dimension and variable-dimension functions. The photovoltaic(PV) system's efficiency can be improved with the aid of effective solar PV cell modeling. However, flawed solar cell parameters affect PV cell modeling incorrectly. The manufacturers are usually not providing all the necessary data for the exact modeling of PV cells. It is therefore necessary to efficiently predict the parameters of the PV cell. The literature discusses various optimization algorithms, but the suboptimal outcomes are obtained by most of the algorithms due to their convergence toward local minima. This paper introduces a new stochastic optimization algorithm for the estimation of solar PV cell parameters. Therefore, for the evaluation of the solar cell, a new novel chaotic algorithm is introduced in this paper called the chaotic tunicate swarm algorithm (CTSA). The proposed algorithm has a new function called an outstanding mathematical model of adaptive weights to stimulate negative and positive inputs from the spreading wave in order to find the best way to connect food with an excellent exploitation tendency and exploratory ability. For the double‐diode model, the computation time of the chaotic variants (CTSA1‐1.1885, CTSA2‐1.2502, CTSA3‐1.2962, CTSA4‐1.1204, and CTSA5‐1.2214) is better than the rest of the compared algorithms (particle swarm optimization [PSO]‐17.4532, tunicate swarm algorithm (TSA)‐2.5278, Harris hawks optimization [HHO]‐10.8942, ant lion optimizer [ALO]‐15.0214, and atom search optimization [ASO]‐9.5214). For the triple‐diode model, the computation time of the chaotic variants (CTSA1‐1.2658, CTSA2‐1.3520, CTSA3‐1.3056, CTSA4‐1.2290, and CTSA5‐1.3859) is better than the rest of the compared algorithms (PSO‐18.5421, TSA‐3.2568, HHO‐9.8754, ALO‐13.5841, and ASO‐11.8412). Arithmetic optimization algorithm (AOA) is a meta-heuristic optimization method based on mathematical operators proposed in recent years. Although it has good performance, it can also lead to insufficient local search ability and falling into local optima when solving complex optimization problems. In order to make up for the above shortcomings, the optimization performance of AOA is further improved. This paper proposes a hybrid algorithm based on AOA and particle swarm optimization (PSO) called HAOAPSO. Firstly, a compound opposition-based learning (COBL) strategy is introduced to broaden the scope of finding optimal solutions to help the algorithm better jump out of local optima. Secondly, PSO is combined with AOA that integrates COBL to improve the algorithm's local search ability, so as to improve the overall search efficiency of the algorithm. In addition, experiments are performed on 23 classical benchmark functions with different characteristics and five engineering design optimization problems, and the experimental results of HAOAPSO are compared with those of other well-known optimization algorithms to comprehensively evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm. In recent years, there is massive development of new metaheuristics as stochastic methods. Meanwhile, there is not any metaheuristics is powerful to handle all problems as stated in the no-free-lunch (NFL) theory. Based on this circumstance, this paper introduces a new swarm-based metaheuristics with the main strategy moving toward the resultant of better swarm members and avoiding the resultant of worse swarm members called group better-worse algorithm (GBWA). It consists of five searches: moving toward the best swarm member, moving toward the resultant of better swarm members, moving away from the resultant of worse swarm members, searching locally, and jumping to the opposite area. GBWA is then evaluated in three ways. The first evaluation is a comparative evaluation where GBWA is compared to five recent metaheuristics: coati optimization algorithm (COA), average and subtraction-based optimization (ASBO), clouded leopard optimization (CLO), total interaction algorithm (TIA), and osprey optimization algorithm (OOA). The second evaluation is the individual search evaluation. The third evaluation is hyperparameter test. The collection of 23 classic functions is chosen as the use case in all evaluations. The result of the first evaluation shows that GBWA is better than COA, ASBO, CLO, TIA, and OOA in 20, 21, 20, 21, and 21 functions consecutively. The chimp optimization algorithm (ChOA) is a nature-inspired algorithm that imitates chimpanzees' individual intelligence and hunting behaviors. In this algorithm, the hunting process consists of four steps: driving, blocking, chasing, and attacking. Because of the novelty of ChOA, the steps of the hunting process have been modeled in the simplest possible way, leading to slow and premature convergence similar to other iterative algorithms. This paper proposes six spiral functions and introduces two novel hybrid spiral functions (SEB-ChOA) to rectify the abovementioned deficiencies. The SEB-ChOAs' performance is evaluated on 23 standard benchmarks, 20 benchmarks of IEEE CEC-2005, 10 cases of IEEE CEC06-2019 test-suite, and 12 constrained real-world engineering problems of IEEE CEC-2020. The SEB-ChOAs are compared with three groups of optimization algorithms, including Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Genetic Algorithm (GA) as the most well-known optimization algorithms, Slime Mould Algorithm (SMA), Marine Predators Algorithm (MPA), Ant Lion Optimization (ALO), Henry Gas Solubility Optimization (HGSO), as almost novel optimization algorithms, and jDE100 and DISHchain1e+12, as winners of IEEE CEC06-2019 competition, and also EBOwithCMAR and CIPDE as superior secondary optimization algorithms. The SEB-ChOAs reached the first rank among almost all benchmarks and demonstrated very competitive results compared to jDE100 and DISHchain1e+12 as the best-performing optimizers. Statistical evidence shows that the SEB-ChOA outperforms the PSO, GA, SMA, MPA, ALO, and HGSO optimizers while producing results comparable to those of the jDE100 and DISHchain1e+12 algorithms. Network traffic identification is critical for maintaining network security and further meeting various demands of network applications. However, network traffic data typically possesses high dimensionality and complexity, leading to practical problems in traffic identification data analytics. Since the original Dung Beetle Optimizer (DBO) algorithm, Grey Wolf Optimization (GWO) algorithm, Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA), and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) algorithm have the shortcomings of slow convergence and easily fall into the local optimal solution, an Improved Dung Beetle Optimizer (IDBO) algorithm is proposed for network traffic identification. Firstly, the Sobol sequence is utilized to initialize the dung beetle population, laying the foundation for finding the global optimal solution. Next, an integration of levy flight and golden sine strategy is suggested to give dung beetles a greater probability of exploring unvisited areas, escaping from the local optimal solution, and converging more effectively towards a global optimal solution. Finally, an adaptive weight factor is utilized to enhance the search capabilities of the original DBO algorithm and accelerate convergence. With the improvements above, the proposed IDBO algorithm is then applied to traffic identification data analytics and feature selection, as so to find the optimal subset for K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN) classification. The simulation experiments use the CICIDS2017 dataset to verify the effectiveness of the proposed IDBO algorithm and compare it with the original DBO, GWO, WOA, and PSO algorithms. The experimental results show that, compared with other algorithms, the accuracy and recall are improved by 1.53% and 0.88% in binary classification, and the Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) class identification is the most effective in multi-classification, with an improvement of 5.80% and 0.33% for accuracy and recall, respectively. Therefore, the proposed IDBO algorithm is effective in increasing the efficiency of traffic identification and solving the problem of the original DBO algorithm that converges slowly and falls into the local optimal solution when dealing with high-dimensional data analytics and feature selection for network traffic identification. End-to-end obstacle avoidance path planning for intelligent vehicles has been a widely studied topic. To resolve the typical issues of the solving algorithms, which are weak global optimization ability, ease in falling into local optimization and slow convergence speed, an efficient optimization method is proposed in this paper, based on the whale optimization algorithm. We present an adaptive adjustment mechanism which can dynamically modify search behavior during the iteration process of the whale optimization algorithm. Meanwhile, in order to coordinate the global optimum and local optimum of the solving algorithm, we introduce a controllable variable which can be reset according to specific routing scenarios. The evolutionary strategy of differential variation is also applied in the algorithm presented to further update the location of search individuals. In numerical experiments, we compared the proposed algorithm with the following six well-known swarm intelligence optimization algorithms: Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Bat Algorithm (BA), Gray Wolf Optimization Algorithm (GWO), Dragonfly Algorithm (DA), Ant Lion Algorithm (ALO), and the traditional Whale Optimization Algorithm (WOA). Our method gave rise to better results for the typical twenty-three benchmark functions. In regard to path planning problems, we observed an average improvement of 18.95% in achieving optimal solutions and 77.86% in stability. Wireless powered communication network (WPCN) is a promising technique to resolve the power constraint issue faced by wireless nodes at the same time it also provides green and a safer solution. This paper studies, mutual sharing between WPCN and simultaneous wireless information and power transfer model where optimal resource allocation occurs between licensed/bandwidth group and an unlicensed/power group to enhance the system performance. The main aim of this paper is to maximize system weighted sum rate and minimize power consumption during transmission by optimal time allocation and energy beamforming vector allocation. These multiobjective combinatorial problems are solved using joint metaheuristic particle swarm optimization-cuckoo search algorithm to provide an optimal solution. The results are compared using a conventional mathematical optimization algorithm to set as a baseline for performance parameters. The obtained results demonstrate that the efficient joint metaheuristic approach provides a significant gain in the system performance and also offers a computationally less complex approach for solving a complicated non-convex multiobjective problem of wireless powered network. Digital platforms have begun to rely more on algorithms to perform basic tasks such as pricing. These platforms must set prices that coordinate two or more sides that need each other in some way (e.g., developers and users or buyers and sellers). Therefore, it is essential to form correct expectations about how both sides behave. The purpose of this paper was to study the effect of different levels of information on two biology-inspired metaheuristics (differential evolution and particle swarm optimization algorithms) that were programmed to set prices on multisided platforms. We assumed that one platform always formed correct expectations (human platform) while the competitor always used a generic version of particle swarm optimization or differential evolution algorithms. We tested different levels of information that modified how expectations were formed. We found that both algorithms might end up in suboptimal solutions, showing that algorithms needed to account for expectation formation explicitly or risk setting nonoptimal prices. Oversampling ratio N and the minority class' nearest neighboring number k are key hyperparameters of synthetic minority oversampling technique (SMOTE) to reconstruct the class distribution of dataset. No optimal default value exists there. Therefore, it is of necessity to discuss the influence of the output dataset on the classification performance when SMOTE adopts various hyperparameter combinations. In this paper, we propose a hyperparameter optimization algorithm for imbalanced data. By iterating to find reasonable N and k for SMOTE, so as to build a balanced and high-quality dataset. As a result, a model with outstanding performance and strong generalization ability is trained, thus effectively solving imbalanced classification. The proposed algorithm is based on the hybridization of simulated annealing mechanism (SA) and particle swarm optimization algorithm (PSO). In the optimization, Cohen's Kappa is used to construct the fitness function, and AdaRBFNN, a new classifier, is integrated by multiple trained RBF neural networks based on AdaBoost algorithm. Kappa of each generation is calculated according to the classification results, so as to evaluate the quality of candidate solution. Experiments are conducted on seven groups of KEEL datasets. In the modern world, wireless body area networks (WBANs) play an essential role in psychological and biomedical applications. The use of WBANs in medical applications is limited due to various issues related to the sensors, viz., irregularity in data production, replacement and recharging of their batteries and the energy consumed by the networks. This manuscript addresses how these problems can be solved along with optimization of the energy consumption through efficient design of the system by applying routing protocols and heuristic-based optimization algorithms. In this paper, the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is a heuristic search algorithm that relies on an upgrade mechanism of the velocity and position of swarms. Although PSO has excellent exploration capability in global search, it becomes quickly stuck in local minima. To enhance the local search function of the current PSO algorithm, a simulated annealing (SA) algorithm has been incorporated in the exploitation phase. The newly developed hybrid PSO-SA (hPSO-SA) algorithm is validated with other state-of-the-art nature-inspired algorithms on eighteen benchmarks and five real engineering design problems. The statistical results of the proposed hPSO-SA algorithm are promising and indicate very good efficiency. The paper also aims at the application of the proposed algorithm to the WBAN design problem for minimization of the energy consumption through better selection of the relay node. This paper presents two hybrid optimization methods known as PSOHHO and DPSOHHO optimization algorithms. In the first method, using a number of formulae, the top populations are exchanged between the two algorithms and a new population is created and in the second method, we adopted the parallel optimization and optimized its performance. In this method, unlike other parallel methods, the population does not remain constant. With this ability, the strengths of an algorithm can be used to compensate for the weaknesses of the other algorithm. In these methods, no changes are made to the algorithms. The main goal is to use existing algorithms. These methods attain the optimal solution in the shortest time possible. Two algorithms of particle swarm optimization (PSO) and Harris Hawks's optimization (HHO) are used to present this method and two truss samples and CEC209 are considered to confirm the performance of this method. The New Caledonian crow learning algorithm (NCCLA) is a novel metaheuristic algorithm inspired by the learning behavior of New Caledonian crows learning to make tools to obtain food. However, it suffers from the problems of easily falling into local optima and insufficient convergence accuracy and convergence precision. To further improve the convergence performance of NCCLA, an improved New Caledonian crow learning algorithm (INCCLA) is proposed in this paper. By determining the parent individuals based on the cosine similarity, the juveniles are guided to search toward different ranges to maintain the population diversity; a novel hybrid mechanism of complete and incomplete learning is proposed to balance the exploration and exploitation capabilities of the algorithm; the update strategy of juveniles and parent individuals is improved to enhance the convergence speed and precision of the algorithm. The test results of the CEC2013 and CEC2020 test suites show that, compared with the original NCCLA algorithm and four of the best metaheuristics to date, INCCLA has significant advantages in terms of convergence speed, convergence precision, and stability.
