We generalize the Bush-Mosteller learning, the Roth-Erev learning, and the social learning to include mistakes, such that the nonlinear replicator-mutator equation with either additive or multiplicative mutation is generated in an asymptotic limit. Subsequently, we exhaustively investigate the ubiquitous rock-paper-scissors game for some analytically tractable motifs of mutation pattern for which the replicator-mutator flow is seen to exhibit rich dynamics that include limit cycles and chaotic orbits. The main result of this paper is that in both symmetric and asymmetric game interactions, mistakes can sometimes help the players learn; in fact, mistakes can even control chaos to lead to rational Nash-equilibrium outcomes. Furthermore, we report a hitherto-unknown Hamiltonian structure of the replicator-mutator equation.

The existence of neutral species carries profound ecological implications that warrant further investigation. In this paper, we study the impact of neutral species on biodiversity in a spatial tritrophic system of cyclic competition, in which the neutral species are identified as the fourth species that may affect the competition process of the other three species under the rock-paper-scissors (RPS) rule. Extensive simulations showed that neutral species can promote coexistence in a high mobility regime within the system. When coexistence occurs, we found that the state can be maintained by two mechanisms: Species can either (i) adhere to traditional RPS rule or (ii) form patches to resist invasion. Our findings might aid in understanding the impact of neutral species on biodiversity in ecosystems.

We study the effects of ambient air humidity on the dynamics of imbibition in a paper. We observed that a quick increase of ambient air humidity leads to depinning and non-Washburn motion of wetting fronts. Specifically, we found that after depinning the wetting front moves with decreasing velocity v[proportionality](h(p)/h(D))(γ), where h(D) is the front elevation with respect to its pinned position at lower humidity h(p), while γ=/~1/3. The spatiotemporal maps of depinned front activity are established. The front motion is controlled by the dynamics of local avalanches directed at 30° to the balk flow direction. Although the roughness of the pinned wetting front is self-affine and the avalanche size distribution displays a power-law asymptotic, the roughness of the moving front becomes multiaffine a few minutes after depinning.

The rock-paper-scissors (RPS) model successfully reproduces some of the main features of simple cyclic predator-prey systems with interspecific competition observed in nature. Still, lattice-based simulations of the spatial stochastic RPS model are known to give rise to significantly different results, depending on whether the three-state Lotka-Volterra or the four-state May-Leonard formulation is employed. This is true independently of the values of the model parameters and of the use of either a von Neumann or a Moore neighborhood. In this paper, we introduce a simple modification to the standard spatial stochastic RPS model in which the range of the search of the nearest neighbor may be extended up to a maximum Euclidean radius R. We show that, with this adjustment, the Lotka-Volterra and May-Leonard formulations can be designed to produce similar results, both in terms of dynamical properties and spatial features, by means of an appropriate parameter choice. In particular, we show that this modified spatial stochastic RPS model naturally leads to the emergence of spiral patterns in both its three- and four-state formulations.

In the evolutionary dynamics of a rock-paper-scissor model, the effect of natural death plays a major role in determining the fate of the system. Coexistence, being an unstable fixed point of the model, becomes very sensitive toward this parameter. In order to study the effect of mobility in such a system which has explicit dependence on mortality, we perform Monte Carlo simulation on a two-dimensional lattice having three cyclically competing species. The spatiotemporal dynamics has been studied along with the two-site correlation function. Spatial distribution exhibits emergence of spiral patterns in the presence of mobility. It reveals that the joint effect of death rate and mobility (diffusion) leads to new coexistence and extinction scenarios.

Paper is the main component of a huge quantity of cultural heritage. It is primarily composed of cellulose that undergoes significant degradation with the passage of time. By using small angle neutron scattering (SANS), we investigated cellulose's supramolecular structure, which allows access to degradation agents, in ancient and modern samples. For the first time, SANS data were interpreted in terms of water-filled pores, with their sizes increasing from 1.61 nm up to 1.97 nm in natural and artificially aged papers. The protective effect of gelatine sizing was also observed.

Cyclic dominance models, such as the classic rock-paper-scissors (RPS) game, have found real-world applications in biology, ecology, and sociology. A key quantity of interest in such models is the coexistence time, i.e., the time until at least one population type goes extinct. Much recent research has considered conditions that lengthen coexistence times in an RPS model. A general finding is that coexistence is promoted by localized spatial interactions (low mobility), while extinction is fostered by global interactions (high mobility). That is, there exists a mobility threshold which separates a regime of long coexistence from a regime of rapid collapse of coexistence. The key finding of our paper is that if zealots (i.e., nodes able to defeat others while themselves being immune to defeat) of even a single type exist, then system coexistence time can be significantly prolonged, even in the presence of global interactions. Assessments are usually thought of as ways for instructors to get information from students. In this work, we flip this perspective and explore how assessments communicate information to students. Specifically, we consider how assessments may provide information about what faculty and/or researchers think it means to know and do physics, i.e., their epistemologies. Using data from students completing assessment questions during one-on-one think aloud interviews, we explore how assessment features did (or did not) impact student engagement with the assessment problems. We analyze video recordings and transcripts to infer the epistemological framings and resources students use while completing introductory-level physics problems. Students’ framings tended to be fairly stable, but when shifts occurred, they were triggered by a shift in epistemological resource, which can be activated by assessment feature. This work extends existing work on epistemological framing into the realm of assessment and allows us to consider the effects of assessments on our students’ understanding of physics teaching and learning.

Antipredator behavior is present in many biological systems where individuals collectively react to an imminent attack. The antipredator response may influence spatial pattern formation and ecosystem stability but requires an organism's cost to contribute to the collective effort. We investigate a nonhierarchical tritrophic system, whose predator-prey interactions are described by the rock-paper-scissors game rules. In our spatial stochastic simulations, the radius of antipredator response defines the maximum prey group size that disturbs the predator's action, determining the individual cost to participate in antipredator strategies. We consider that each organism contributes equally to the collective effort, having its mobility limited by the proportion of energy devoted to the antipredator reaction. Our outcomes show that the antipredator response leads to spiral patterns, with the segregation of organisms of the same species occupying departed spatial domains. We found that a less localized antipredator response increases the average size of the single-species patches, improving the protection of individuals against predation. Finally, our findings show that although the increase of the predation risk for a more localized antipredator response, the high mobility constraining benefits species coexistence. Our results may help ecologists understand the mechanisms leading to the stability of biological systems where locality is crucial to behavioral interactions among species.

When playing games in groups, it is an advantage for individuals to have accurate statistical information on the strategies of their opponents. Such information may be obtained by remembering previous interactions. We consider a rock-paper-scissors game in which agents are able to recall their last m interactions, used to estimate the behavior of their opponents. At critical memory length, a Hop! bifurcation leads to the formation of stable limit cycles. In a mixed population, agents with longer memories have an advantage, provided the system has a stable fixed point, and there is some asymmetry in the payoffs of the pure strategies. However, at a critical concentration of long memory agents, the appearance of limit cycles destroys their advantage. The spatiotemporal arrangement of interacting populations often influences the maintenance of species diversity and is a subject of intense research. Here, we study the spatiotemporal patterns arising from the cyclic competition between three species in two dimensions. Inspired by recent experiments, we consider a generic metapopulation model comprising "rock-paper-scissors" interactions via dominance removal and replacement, reproduction, mutations, pair exchange, and hopping of individuals. By combining analytical and numerical methods, we obtain the model's phase diagram near its Hopf bifurcation and quantitatively characterize the properties of the spiraling patterns arising in each phase. The phases characterizing the cyclic competition away from the Hopf bifurcation (at low mutation rate) are also investigated. Our analytical approach relies on the careful analysis of the properties of the complex Ginzburg-Landau equation derived through a controlled (perturbative) multiscale expansion around the model's Hopf bifurcation. Our results allow us to clarify when spatial "rock-paper-scissors" competition leads to stable spiral waves and under which circumstances they are influenced by nonlinear mobility. We offer a fractonic perspective on a familiar observation-a flat sheet of paper can be folded only along a straight line if one wants to avoid the creation of additional creases or tears. Our core underlying technical result is the establishment of a duality between the theory of elastic plates and a fractonic gauge theory with a second rank symmetric electric field tensor, a scalar magnetic field, a vector charge, and a symmetric tensor current. Bending moment and momentum of the plate are dual to the electric and magnetic fields, respectively. While the flexural waves correspond to the quadratically dispersing photon of the gauge theory, a fold defect is dual to its vector charge. Crucially, the fractonic condition constrains the latter to move only along its direction, i.e., the fold's growth direction. By contrast, fracton motion in the perpendicular direction amounts to tearing the paper.

We theoretically demonstrate the realization of a chiral edge mode in a system beyond natural science. Specifically, we elucidate that a kagome network of rock-paper-scissors (K-RPS) hosts a chiral edge mode of the population density which is protected by the nontrivial topology in the bulk. The emergence of the chiral edge mode is demonstrated by numerically solving the Lotka-Volterra (LV) equation. This numerical result can be intuitively understood in terms of the cyclic motion of a single rock-paper-scissors cycle, which is analogous to the cyclotron motion of fermions. Furthermore, we point out that a linearized LV equation is mathematically equivalent to the Schrödinger equation describing quantum systems. This equivalence allows us to clarify the topological origin of the chiral edge mode in the K-RPS; a nonzero Chern number of the payoff matrix induces the chiral edge mode of the population density, which exemplifies the bulk-edge correspondence in two-dimensional systems described by evolutionary game theory.

We analyze the replicator-mutator equations for the rock-paper-scissors game. Various graph-theoretic patterns of mutation are considered, ranging from a single unidirectional mutation pathway between two of the species, to global bidirectional mutation among all the species. Our main result is that the coexistence state, in which all three species exist in equilibrium, can be destabilized by arbitrarily small mutation rates. After it loses stability, the coexistence state gives birth to a stable limit cycle solution created in a supercritical Hopf bifurcation. This attracting periodic solution exists for all the mutation patterns considered, and persists arbitrarily close to the limit of zero mutation rate and a zero-sum game. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

When faced with an imminent risk of predation, many animals react to escape consumption. Antipredator strategies are performed by individuals acting as a group to intimidate predators and minimize the damage when attacked. We study the antipredator prey response in spatial tritrophic systems with cyclic species dominance using the rock-paper-scissors game. The impact of the antipredator behavior is local, with the predation probability reducing exponentially with the number of prey in the predator's neighborhood. In contrast to the standard Lotka-Volterra implementation of the rock-paper-scissors model, where no spiral waves appear, our outcomes show that the antipredator behavior leads to spiral patterns from random initial conditions. The results show that the predation risk decreases exponentially with the level of antipredator strength. Finally, we investigate the coexistence probability and verify that antipredator behavior may jeopardize biodiversity for high mobility. Our findings may help biologists to understand ecosystems formed by species whose individuals behave strategically to resist predation.

A hallmark of topological phases is the occurrence of topologically protected modes at the system's boundary. Here, we find topological phases in the antisymmetric Lotka-Volterra equation (ALVE). The ALVE is a nonlinear dynamical system and describes, for example, the evolutionary dynamics of a rock-paper-scissors cycle. On a one-dimensional chain of rock-paper-scissor cycles, topological phases become manifest as robust polarization states. At the transition point between left and right polarization, solitary waves are observed. This topological phase transition lies in symmetry class D within the "tenfold way" classification as also realized by 1D topological superconductors.

The rock-paper-scissors game is a model example of the ongoing cyclic turnover typical of many ecosystems, ranging from the terrestrial and aquatic to the microbial. Here we explore the evolution of a rock-paper-scissors system where three species compete for space. The species are allowed to mutate and change the speed by which they invade one another. In the case when all species have similar mutation rates, we observe a perpetual arms race where no single species prevails. When only two species mutate, their aggressions increase indefinitely until the ecosystem collapses and only the nonmutating species survives. Finally we show that when only one species mutates, group selection removes individual predators with the fastest growth rates, causing the growth rate of the species to stabilize. We investigate the population dynamics in generalized rock-paper-scissors models with an arbitrary number of species Ν. We show that spiral patterns with Ν arms may develop both for odd and even N, in particular in models where a bidirectional prédation interaction of equal strength between all species is modified to include one -cyclic predator-prey rule. While the former case gives rise to an interface network with Y-type junctions obeying the scaling law L ∝ t1/2, where L is the characteristic length of the network and t is the time, the latter can lead to a population network with N-armed spiral patterns, having a roughly constant characteristic length scale. We explicitly demonstrate the connection between interface junctions and spiral patterns in these models and compute the corresponding scaling laws. This work significantly extends the results of previous studies of population dynamics and could have profound implications for the understanding of biological complexity in systems with a large number of species. We introduce a family of rock-paper-scissors-type models with ZN symmetry (N is the number of species), and we show that it has a very rich structure with many completely different phases. We study realizations that lead to the formation of domains, where individuals of one or more species coexist, separated by interfaces whose (average) dynamics is curvature driven. This type of behavior, which might be relevant for the development of biological complexity, leads to an interface network evolution and pattern formation similar to the ones of several other nonlinear systems in condensed matter and cosmology. We investigate the impact of cyclic competition on pattern formation in the rock-paper-scissors game. By separately considering random and prepared initial conditions, we observe a critical influence of the competition rate p on the stability of spiral waves and on the emergence of biodiversity. In particular, while increasing values of p promote biodiversity, they may act detrimentally on spatial pattern formation. For random initial conditions, we observe a phase transition from biodiversity to an absorbing phase, whereby the critical value of mobility grows linearly with increasing values of p on a log-log scale but then saturates as p becomes large. For prepared initial conditions, we observe the formation of single-armed spirals, but only for values of p that are below a critical value. Once above that value, the spirals break up and form disordered spatial structures, mainly because of the percolation of vacant sites. Thus there exists a critical value of the competition rates pc for stable single-armed spirals in finite populations. Importantly though, pc increases with increasing system size because noise reinforces the disintegration of ordered patterns. In addition, we also find that pc increases with the mobility. These phenomena are reproduced by a deterministic model that is based on nonlinear partial differential equations. Our findings indicate that competition is vital for the sustenance of biodiversity and the emergence of pattern formation in ecosystems governed by cyclical interactions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multiple species in the ecosystem are believed to compete cyclically for maintaining balance in nature. The evolutionary dynamics of cyclic interaction crucially depends on different interactions representing different natural habits. Based on a rock-paper-scissors model of cyclic competition, we explore the role of mortality of individual organisms in the collective survival of a species. For this purpose a parameter called "natural death" is introduced. It is meant for bringing about the decease of an individual irrespective of any intra- and interspecific interaction. We perform a Monte Carlo simulation followed by a stability analysis of different fixed points of defined rate equations and observe that the natural death rate is surprisingly one of the most significant factors in deciding whether an ecosystem would come up with a coexistence or a single-species survival.

We investigate the problem of the predominance and survival of "weak" species in the context of the simplest generalization of the spatial stochastic rock-paper-scissors model to four species by considering models in which one, two, or three species have a reduced predation probability. We show, using lattice based spatial stochastic simulations with random initial conditions, that if only one of the four species has its probability reduced, then the most abundant species is the prey of the "weakest" (assuming that the simulations are large enough for coexistence to prevail). Also, among the remaining cases, we present examples in which "weak" and "strong" species have similar average abundances and others in which either of them dominates-the most abundant species being always a prey of a weak species with which it maintains a unidirectional predator-prey interaction. However, in contrast to the three-species model, we find no systematic difference in the global performance of weak and strong species, and we conjecture that a similar result will hold if the number of species is further increased. We also determine the probability of single species survival and coexistence as a function of the lattice size, discussing its dependence on initial conditions and on the change to the dynamics of the model which results from the extinction of one of the species.

Origami-inspired design has recently emerged as a major thrust area of research in the fields of science and engineering. One such design utilizes Kresling-pattern origami to construct nonlinear springs that can act as mechanical bit memory switches, wave guides, fluidic muscles, and vibration isolators. The main objective of this work is to characterize the static equilibria of such springs, their stability, and bifurcations as the geometric parameters of the Kresling pattern are varied. To this end, a mathematical model which assumes that the different panels can be represented by axially deformable truss elements is adopted. The adopted model demonstrates that the shape of the potential energy of the spring is very sensitive to changes in its geometric parameters. This causes the static configuration to undergo several bifurcations as one or more of the geometrical parameters are varied. In particular, it is shown that the geometric parameter space of the Kresling pattern can be divided into five regions, each of which results in a qualitatively different spring behavior. Results of the axial truss model are verified experimentally demonstrating that, for the most part, the model is capable of predicting the loci and bifurcations of the spring's equilibria. Nevertheless, it is also observed that, away from the equilibrium points, the quasistatic behavior of the spring is not well-approximated by the axial truss model. To overcome this issue, a modified model is developed which accounts for (i) the rotary stiffness of the creases, (ii) self avoidance due to panel contact at small angles between the panels, and (iii) buckling of the creases under compressive loads. It is shown that the modified model is capable of providing a better overall qualitative approximation of the quasistatic behavior.

A paper spring is a simple paper craft popular with children. It can be constructed by interfolding and gluing two long strips of paper of equal sizes, with the simplest possible crease patterns. In addition to its curious springy response, this origami-based composite exhibits a twist deformation during its extension. Although its interlocking structure is expected to underly the strong stretch-twist coupling, a detailed understanding of it remains elusive. Here we quantify the kinematics and mechanics of a paper spring during its extensional actuation by combining experimental, numerical, and analytical approaches. We directly link the nonlinear mechanics of a paper spring with its structural design and the sheet elasticity. We show that the unique interlocking provides an enhanced structural rigidity because the thin sheets suffer from geometric frustrations and must locally bend and stretch during extension. This structural design allows for a reversible transformation between the rotatory and linear motions solely by controlling forces and moments applied at the ends of the structure. Such deployment kinematics could provide a unique avenue of the mode conversion for potential applications and will broaden the possibilities of future designs of origami-based springs with tunable functionalities.

This study investigates drop impingement on highly wetting porous films and papers. Experiments reveal previously unexplored impingement modes on porous surfaces designated as necking, spreading, and jetting. Dimensional analysis yields a nondimensional parameter, denoted the Washburn-Reynolds number, relating droplet kinetic energy and surface energy. The impingement modes correlate with Washburn-Reynolds number variations spanning four orders of magnitude and a corresponding energy conservation analysis for droplet spreading shows good agreement with the experimental results. The simple scaling laws presented will inform the investigation of dynamic interactions between porous surfaces and liquid drops. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work deals with a system of three distinct species that changes in time under the presence of mobility, selection, and reproduction, as in the popular rock-paper-scissors game. The novelty of the current study is the modification of the mobility rule to the case of directional mobility, in which the species move following the direction associated to a larger (averaged) number density of selection targets in the surrounding neighborhood. Directional mobility can be used to simulate eyes that see or a nose that smells, and we show how it may contribute to reduce the probability of coexistence.

This work deals with the effects of an apex predator on the cyclic competition among three distinct species that follow the rules of the rock-paper-scissors game. The investigation develops standard stochastic simulations but is motivated by a procedure which is explained in the work. We add the apex predator as the fourth species in a system that contains three species that evolve following the standard rules of migration, reproduction, and predation, and study how the system evolves in this new environment, in comparison with the case in the absence of the apex predator. The results show that the apex predator engenders the tendency to spread uniformly in the lattice, contributing to destroy the spiral patterns, keeping biodiversity but diminishing the average size of the clusters of the species that compete cyclically.

We consider the network of citations of scientific papers and use a combination of the theoretical and experimental tools to uncover microscopic details of this network growth. Namely, we develop a stochastic model of citation dynamics based on the copying-redirection-triadic closure mechanism. In a complementary and coherent way, the model accounts both for statistics of references of scientific papers and for their citation dynamics. Originating in empirical measurements, the model is cast in such a way that it can be verified quantitatively in every aspect. Such validation is performed by measuring citation dynamics of physics papers. The measurements revealed nonlinear citation dynamics, the nonlinearity being intricately related to network topology. The nonlinearity has far-reaching consequences including nonstationary citation distributions, diverging citation trajectories of similar papers, runaways or "immortal papers" with infinite citation lifetime, etc. Thus nonlinearity in complex network growth is our most important finding. In a more specific context, our results can be a basis for quantitative probabilistic prediction of citation dynamics of individual papers and of the journal impact factor.

The rock-paper-scissors game is a paradigmatic model for biodiversity, with applications ranging from microbial populations to human societies. Research has shown, however, that mobility jeopardizes biodiversity by promoting the formation of spiral waves, especially if there is no conservation law in place for the total number of competing players. First, we show that even if such a conservation law applies, mobility still jeopardizes biodiversity in the spatial rock-paper-scissors game if only a small fraction of links of the square lattice is randomly rewired. Secondly, we show that zealots are very effective in taming the amplitude of oscillations that emerge due to mobility and/or interaction randomness, and this regardless of whether the later is quenched or annealed. While even a tiny fraction of zealots brings significant benefits, at 5% occupancy zealots practically destroy all oscillations regardless of the intensity of mobility, and regardless of the type and strength of randomness in the interaction structure. Interestingly, by annealed randomness the impact of zealots is qualitatively the same as by mobility, which highlights that fast diffusion does not necessarily destroy the coexistence of species, and that zealotry thus helps to recover the stable mean-field solution. Our results strengthen the important role of zealots in models of cyclic dominance, and they reveal fascinating evolutionary outcomes in structured populations that are a unique consequence of such uncompromising behavior.

In this paper, we present a new noninvasive and nondestructive approach to recover scattering and absorption coefficients from reflectance measurements of highly absorbing and optically inhomogeneous media. Our approach is based on the Yang and Miklavcic theoretical model of light propagation through turbid media, which is a generalization of the Kubelka-Munk theory, extended to accommodate optically thick samples. We show its applications to paper, a material primarily composed of a web of fibers of cellulose, whose optical properties are strongly governed by light scattering effects. Samples studied were ancient and industrial paper sheets, aged in different conditions and highly absorbing in the ultraviolet region. The recovered experimental absorptions of cellulose fibers have been compared to theoretical quantum-mechanical computational simulations carried out within time-dependent density functional theory. In this way, for each sample, we evaluate the absolute concentration of different kinds of oxidized groups formed upon aging and acting as chromophores causing paper discoloration. We found that the relative concentration of different chromophores in cellulose fibers depends on the aging temperature endured by samples. This clearly indicates that the oxidation of cellulose follows temperature-dependent reaction pathways. Our approach has a wide range of applications for cellulose-based materials, like paper, textiles, and other manufactured products of great industrial and cultural interest, and can potentially be extended to other strongly absorbing inhomogeneous materials. We study a spatial evolutionary rock-paper-scissors game with synchronized strategy updating. Players gain their payoff from games with their four neighbors on a square lattice and can update their strategies simultaneously according to the logit rule, which is the noisy version of the best-response dynamics. For the synchronized strategy update two types of global oscillations (with an ordered strategy arrangement and periods of three and six generations) can occur in this system in the zero noise limit. At low noise values, all nine oscillating phases are present in the system by forming a self-organizing spatial pattern due to the comprising invasion and speciation processes along the interfaces separating the different domains.

The magnetic ground states of the isostructural paper-chain compounds Ba3Cu3In4O12 and Ba3Cu3Sc4O12 were recently found to be ordered antiferromagnetically (AFM), while both quantum magnets reveal positive asymptotic Curie-Weiss temperatures suggestive of ferromagnetic (FM) interactions at high temperatures. Due to the AFM-FM competition the saturation magnetization in both compounds is reached already in modest magnetic fields with a nontrivial succession of two spin-flop and two spin-flip-like transitions in Ba3Cu3In4O12. We argue that the paper-chains in both compounds can be described as a system of Cu'-2Cu" trimers with a low-spin 5=1/2 ground state which implies a nonmagnetic spin-singlet Cu" dimer state and a spin-polarized Cu' ion. To validate the model we performed extensive nuclear resonance--nuclear quadrupole resonance-nuclear magnetic resonance (NQR-NMR)--measurements in Ba3Cu3In4O12. Two different types of 63,65Cu nuclear resonance spectra were observed in the magnetically ordered state at zero external magnetic field: (i) a pure NQR spectrum in the frequency range of 24-30 MHz and (ii) a zero-field NMR spectrum in the frequency range of 50-65 MHz. This result unambiguously indicates that one of the two types of copper ions in Ba3Cu3In4O12 is in a nonmagnetic spin state below TN. It provides a unique criterion to test any theoretical model describing the ground-state spin structure in Ba3Cu3ln40|2 . We attribute the pure NQR spectrum to Cu" ions forming nonmagnetic spin-singlet 2Cu" dimers and the zero-field NMR spectrum to spin-polarized Cu' ions. Both NQR and zero-field NMR spectra point to an existence of at least two nonequivalent sets of the copper trimers, probably due to displacements of the Cu' ions along the cavity in the c direction. The yellowing of paper on aging causes major aesthetic damages of cultural heritage. It is due to cellulose oxidation, a complex process with many possible products still to be clarified. By comparing ultraviolet-visible reflectance spectra of ancient and artificially aged modern papers with ab initio time-dependent density functional theory calculations, we identify and estimate the abundance of oxidized functional groups acting as chromophores and responsible of paper yellowing. In this work we investigate the development of stable dynamical structures along interfaces separating domains belonging to enemy partnerships in the context of cyclic predator-prey models with an even number of species N≥8. We use both stochastic and field theory simulations in one and two spatial dimensions, as well as analytical arguments, to describe the association at the interfaces of mutually neutral individuals belonging to enemy partnerships and to probe their role in the development of the dynamical structures at the interfaces. We identify an interesting behavior associated with the symmetric or asymmetric evolution of the interface profiles depending on whether N/2 is odd or even, respectively. We also show that the macroscopic evolution of the interface network is not very sensitive to the internal structure of the interfaces. Although this work focuses on cyclic predator-prey models with an even number of species, we argue that the results are expected to be quite generic in the context of spatial stochastic May-Leonard models.

This study investigates drop impingement on highly wetting porous films and papers. Experiments reveal previously unexplored impingement modes on porous surfaces designated as necking, spreading, and jetting. Dimensional analysis yields a nondimensional parameter, denoted the Washburn-Reynolds number, relating droplet kinetic energy and surface energy. The impingement modes correlate with Washburn-Reynolds number variations spanning four orders of magnitude and a corresponding energy conservation analysis for droplet spreading shows good agreement with the experimental results. The simple scaling laws presented will inform the investigation of dynamic interactions between porous surfaces and liquid drops.
