Abstract: The author relates the use of the concept behind visual humor on Tony de Carlo's Day of the Dead paintings in teaching eighth-grade students. Her students are studying Spanish as their foreign language elective and are familiar with the customs surrounding Day of the Dead celebrations in Mexico. Oil pastels on either black of white paper were used by students for their own Day of the Dead works. Some of them depicted their own ancestors, pets and famous people.
