Significant Wave Height (SWH) is crucial in many aspect of ocean engineering. The accurate prediction of SWH has therefore been of immense practical value. Recently, Artificial Intelligence (AI) time series prediction methods have been widely used for single-point short-term SWH time-series forecasting, resulting in many AI-based models claiming to achieve good results. However, the extent to which these complex AI models can outperform traditional methods has largely been overlooked. This study compared five different models - AutoRegressive (AR), eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGB), Artificial Neural Network (ANN), Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), and WaveNet - for their performance on SWH time series prediction at 16 buoy locations. Surprisingly, the results suggest that the differences of performance among different models are negligible, indicating that all these AI models have only "learned" the linear auto-regression from the data. Due to the increasing size of integrated circuits (ICs), their design and optimization phases (i.e., computer-aided design, CAD) grow increasingly complex. At design time, a large design space needs to be explored to find an implementation that fulfills all specifications and then optimizes metrics like energy, area, delay, reliability, etc. At run time, a large configuration space needs to be searched to find the best set of parameters (e.g., voltage/frequency) to further optimize the system. Both spaces are infeasible for exhaustive search typically leading to heuristic optimization algorithms that find some tradeoff between design quality and computational overhead. Machine learning (ML) can build powerful models that have successfully been employed in related domains. In this survey, we categorize how ML may be used and is used for design-time and run-time optimization and exploration strategies of ICs. A metastudy of published techniques unveils areas in CAD that are well explored and underexplored with ML, as well as trends in the employed ML algorithms. We present a comprehensive categorization and summary of the state of the art on ML for CAD. Finally, we summarize the remaining challenges and promising open research directions. Machine learning (ML), a form of artificial intelligence (AI), is being increasingly employed in neurology. Reported performance metrics often match or exceed the efficiency of average clinicians. The neurologist is easily baffled by the underlying concepts and terminologies associated with ML studies. The superlative performance metrics of ML algorithms often hide the opaque nature of its inner workings. Questions regarding ML model's interpretability and reproducibility of its results in real-world scenarios, need emphasis. Given an abundance of time and information, the expert clinician should be able to deliver comparable predictions to ML models, a useful benchmark while evaluating its performance. Digital technologies sustain today's world. Every part of the world is working towards digital technologies, which none of us can eliminate. This paper investigates a method for precise mapping of human arm movements using sEMG signals. A multi-channel approach captures the sEMG signals, which, combined with the accurately calculated joint angles from an Inertial Measurement Unit, allows for action recognition and mapping through deep learning algorithms. Firstly, signal acquisition and processing were carried out, which involved acquiring data from various movements (hand gestures, single-degree-of-freedom joint movements, and continuous joint actions) and sensor placement. Then, interference signals were filtered out through filters, and the signals were preprocessed using normalization and moving averages to obtain sEMG signals with obvious features. Additionally, this paper constructs a hybrid network model, combining Convolutional Neural Networks and Artificial Neural Networks, and employs a multi-feature fusion algorithm to enhance the accuracy of gesture recognition. Furthermore, a nonlinear fitting between sEMG signals and joint angles was established based on a backpropagation neural network, incorporating momentum term and adaptive learning rate adjustments. Finally, based on the gesture recognition and joint angle prediction model, prosthetic arm control experiments were conducted, achieving highly accurate arm movement prediction and execution. Despite the complex punching shear behavior of reinforced concrete slabs have been comprehensively addressed in the literature, it is further essential to develop a universal design model comprising high accuracy and the simplicity for design practicability, adaptable to diverse conditions encountered in practice. Artificial intelligence applications, artificial neural networks (ANN), and more recently, various machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) techniques veer off in a new direction in structural engineering context with improved accuracy and efficiency. The paper begins with the assessment of the capabilities of various artificial intelligence applications in predicting the punching shear strength of slab-column connections without shear reinforcement through the extensive database using 650 punching shear experiments from the literature. Critical parameters influencing the punching shear strength as well as the precision of the current code provisions in predicting this feature were then thoroughly examined in the paper. The results shown in this paper validated the competency of artificial intelligence applications in predicting the punching shear strength of such connections with increased accuracy and improved simplicity in practical terms. Over the last few years, a plethora of papers presenting machine-learning-based approaches for intrusion detection have been published. However, the majority of those papers do not compare their results with a proper baseline of a signature-based intrusion detection system, thus violating good machine learning practices. In order to evaluate the pros and cons of the machine-learning-based approach, we replicated a research study that uses a deep neural network model for intrusion detection. The results of our replicated research study expose several systematic problems with the used datasets and evaluation methods. In our experiments, a signature-based intrusion detection system with a minimal setup was able to outperform the tested model even under small traffic changes. Testing the replicated neural network on a new dataset recorded in the same environment with the same attacks using the same tools showed that the accuracy of the neural network dropped to 54%. The number of papers on machine learning and deep neural networks applied to intrusion detection systems (IDS) is ever-increasing. Differently from existing work on the topic, this paper explores the effect of training-time randomness of deep neural networks, which is overlooked by the related literature. Training-time randomness is regulated by the seed of the pseudorandom number generator, and affects the performance of IDS models. The seed selection is studied in conjunction with other critical learning parameters: to the best of our knowledge, there are no similar studies in IDS. The experiments are done with a recent and widely consolidated intrusion detection benchmark, which is used to train and test a neural network under different combinations of seeds and parameters both in supervised and semi-supervised learning modes. The results are inferred by a mixture of explorative analysis, design of experiments, and analysis of variance. According to the results, the choice of the seed yields either excellent or scarce detection metrics; more importantly, the seed selection might be as relevant as the other major learning parameters assessed. PIN diodes, due to their simple structure and variable resistance characteristics under high-frequency high-power excitation, are often used in radar front-end as limiters to filter high power microwaves (HPM) to prevent its power from entering the internal circuit and causing damage. This paper carries out theoretical derivation and research on the HPM effects of PIN diodes, and then uses an optimized neural network algorithm to replace traditional physical modeling to calculate and predict two types of HPM limiting indicators of PIN diode limiters. We proposes a neural network model for each of the following two prediction scenarios: in the scenario of time-junction temperature curves under different HPM irradiation, the weighted mean squared error (MSE) between the predicted values from the test dataset and the simulated values is below 0.004. While in predicting PIN limiter's power limitation threshold, insertion loss, and maximum isolation under different HPM irradiation, the MSE of the test set prediction values and simulation values are all less than 0.03. The method proposed in this research, which applies an optimized neural network algorithm to replace traditional physical modeling algorithms for studying the high-power microwave effects of PIN diode limiters, significantly improves the computational and simulation speed, reduces the calculation cost, and provides a new method for studying the high-power microwave effects of PIN diode limiters. Parkinson's disease (PD) is a condition that degenerates over time and impairs speech and pronunciation because brain cells have died. This research work aims to predict parkinson disease using the voice features extracted from speech signals recorded from PD individuals with dysphonic speech disorders by employing deep learning algorithms. PD is challenging to diagnose early on in the clinical presentation. To address the issue in machine learning methods, this paper proposes a neural network model by processing speech signals to classify PD using the University of California Irvine (UCI) machine learning repository dataset. Initially, a pre-loss reduction module is created by using pre-sampling to make the dataset balanced by reducing the dimensionality and maintaining the size of the space without influencing the learning process for data preparation. The relevant features are derived using a novel multi-agent salp swarm (MASS) algorithm, and a novel Parkinson classification neural network (PCNN) is proposed to classify Parkinson's patients with high accuracy employing these derived features. The result shows that the models that use MASS-PCNN produce higher classification accuracy of 99.1%, precision of 97.8%, recall of 94.7% and F1-score of 0.995 when paralleled to the existing models. Retail demand forecasting is a highly intricate and multilevel problem as it may include numerous products, under multiple categories, and potentially sold in many different stores. Forecasts may also process products in isolation or collectively so as to detect mutual correlations. In technical terms, retail demand forecasting may be broken down to a multivariate time series forecasting problem where the time axis is prevalent and introduces added complexity which necessitates proper usage of advanced methodologies with machine/deep learning backgrounds. Popular boosting regressors, such as XGBoost and LightGBM, are excellent machine learning candidates with extensive bibliographic backgrounds covering multiple scientific fields and applications including generic multivariate time series forecasts. The Temporal Convolutional Network and the Temporal Fusion Transformer are recently proposed deep neural network architectures that found success in specific multivariate scenarios but are yet to be tested in a variety of related fields such as retail demand forecasting. Therefore, within this paper, these novel in-the-field models are compared to the aforementioned boosting approaches alongside popular statistical univariate methods, namely Exponential Smoothing and SARIMA. To properly compare the selected models and attempt to generalize their usability, two separate datasets are analyzed and forecasted; an item sales dataset with 500 time series and a category sales dataset with 540 time series. The findings suggest that the deep learning solutions are the better predictors, with the Transformer model surpassing the Boosting solutions by up to 16.8% sMAPE decrease and the statistical approaches by up to 28.6% decrease, further substantiating the notion that deep learning techniques are exceptionally promising in handling large-scale, non-linear and outlier data whilst suggesting that retail demand forecasting does benefit from multivariate approaches and the application of advanced machine learning methods. Large deep learning models are impressive, but they struggle when real-time data is not available. Few-shot class-incremental learning (FSCIL) poses a significant challenge for deep neural networks to learn new tasks from just a few labeled samples without forgetting the previously learned ones. This setup can easily leads to catastrophic forgetting and overfitting problems, severely affecting model performance. Studying FSCIL helps overcome deep learning model limitations on data volume and acquisition time, while improving practicality and adaptability of machine learning models. This paper provides a comprehensive survey on FSCIL. Unlike previous surveys, we aim to synthesize few-shot learning and incremental learning, focusing on introducing FSCIL from two perspectives, while reviewing over 30 theoretical research studies and more than 20 applied research studies. From the theoretical perspective, we provide a novel categorization approach that divides the field into five subcategories, including traditional machine learning methods, meta learning-based methods, feature and feature space-based methods, replay-based methods, and dynamic network structure-based methods. We also evaluate the performance of recent theoretical research on benchmark datasets of FSCIL. From the application perspective, FSCIL has achieved impressive achievements in various fields of computer vision such as image classification, object detection, and image segmentation, as well as in natural language processing and graph. We summarize the important applications. Finally, we point out potential future research directions, including applications, problem setups, and theory development. In this paper we present a method that allows leveraging 3D electron density information to train a deep neural network pipeline to segment regions of high, medium and low electronegativity and classify substances as health hazardous or non-hazardous. We show that this can be used for use-cases such as cosmetics and food products. For this purpose, we first generate 3D electron density cubes using semiempirical molecular calculations for a custom European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) subset consisting of substances labelled as hazardous and non-hazardous for cosmetic usage. Together with their 3-class electronegativity maps we train a modified 3D-UNet with electron density cubes to segment reactive sites in molecules and classify substances with an accuracy of 78.1%. We perform the same process on a custom food dataset (CompFood) consisting of hazardous and non-hazardous substances compiled from European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) OpenFoodTox, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) and FooDB datasets to achieve a classification accuracy of 64.1%. Our results show that 3D electron densities and particularly masked electron densities, calculated by taking a product of original electron densities and regions of high and low electronegativity can be used to classify molecules for different use-cases and thus serve not only to guide safe-by-design product development but also aid in regulatory decisions. Scientific contribution: We aim to contribute to the diverse 3D molecular representations used for training machine learning algorithms by showing that a deep learning network can be trained on 3D electron density representation of molecules. This approach has previously not been used to train machine learning models and it allows utilization of the true spatial domain of the molecule for prediction of properties such as their suitability for usage in cosmetics and food products and in future, to other molecular properties. This study aims to enhance diagnostic capabilities for optimising the performance of the anaerobic sewage treatment lagoon at Melbourne Water's Western Treatment Plant (WTP) through a novel machine learning (ML)-based monitoring strategy. This strategy employs ML to make accurate probabilistic predictions of biogas performance by leveraging diverse real-life operational and inspection sensor and other measurement data for asset management, decision making, and structural health monitoring (SHM). The paper commences with data analysis and preprocessing of complex irregular datasets to facilitate efficient learning in an artificial neural network. Subsequently, a Bayesian mixture density neural network model incorporating an attention-based mechanism in bidirectional long short-term memory (BiLSTM) was developed. This probabilistic approach uses a distribution output layer based on the Gaussian mixture model and Monte Carlo (MC) dropout technique in estimating data and model uncertainties, respectively. Furthermore, systematic hyperparameter optimisation revealed that the optimised model achieved a negative log-likelihood (NLL) of 0.074, significantly outperforming other configurations. It achieved an accuracy approximately 9 times greater than the average model performance (NLL = 0.753) and 22 times greater than the worst performing model (NLL = 1.677). Key factors influencing the model's accuracy, such as the input window size and the number of hidden units in the BiLSTM layer, were identified, while the number of neurons in the fully connected layer was found to have no significant impact on accuracy. Moreover, model calibration using the expected calibration error was performed to correct the model's predictive uncertainty. The findings suggest that the inherent data significantly contribute to the overall uncertainty of the model, highlighting the need for more high-quality data to enhance learning. To achieve successful prevention of fire incidents originating from human activities, it is imperative to possess a thorough understanding. This paper introduces a machine learning approach, specifically utilizing deep neural networks (DNN), to develop predictive models for fire occurrence in Keelung City, Taiwan. It investigates ten factors across demographic, architectural, and economic domains through spatial analysis and thematic maps generated from geographic information system data. These factors are then integrated as inputs for the DNN model. Through 50 iterations, performance indices including the coefficient of determination (R2), root mean square error (RMSE), variance accounted for (VAF), prediction interval (PI), mean absolute error (MAE), weighted index (WI), weighted mean absolute percentage error (WMAPE), Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NS), and the ratio of performance to deviation (RPD) are computed, with average values of 0.89, 7.30 × 10−2, 89.21, 1.63, 4.90 × 10−2, 0.97, 2.92 × 10−1, 0.88, and 4.84, respectively. The model's predictions, compared with historical data, demonstrate its efficacy. Additionally, this study explores the impact of various urban renewal strategies using the DNN model, highlighting the significant influence of economic factors on fire incidence. One of the predominant health issues affecting Saudi Arabia and leading to many complications is Type 2 diabetes (T2D). Early detection and significant preventative measures lead to curbing and controlling the health issue. There are fewer datasets in the literature for the detection of T2D in the Saudi population. Past studies using Saudi data have favoured machine learning algorithms to classify T2D. Although the application of this data in machine learning is evident, no studies exist in the literature that compare this data, especially those related to deep learning algorithms. This study's objective is to use specific Saudi data to develop multiple deep learning models that could be used to detect T2D. The research uses a Deep Neural Network (DNN), an Autoencoder (AE), and a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to create predictive models and compare their performance with a traditional machine learning classifier used on the same dataset that outperformed other machine learning algorithms such as a Decision Forest (DF). Various metrics were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the models, such as accuracy, precision, recall, F1 score and area under the ROC curve (AUC) where the ROC acts as a receiver operating characteristic curve. There are two cases in this paper: (i) uses all features of the dataset and (ii) uses six of the ten features, such as DF. In case (i), the results were shown that AE outperformed other models with the highest accuracy for imbalanced and balanced data 81.12% and 79.16%, respectively. The results for case (ii) showed that AE scored the highest 81.01% accuracy with imbalanced data compared to DF and DF achieved the highest accuracy of 82.1% with balanced data. As a result, both cases explored in this study revealed that AE has a constant superior performance if imbalanced data is used. In contrast, DF demonstrated the highest accuracy when a balanced dataset was used with a feature set reduction. They help to identify the undiagnosed T2D, and they are essential for professionals in Saudi Arabia in the health sector to promote health connections, identify risks and contain or improve their diabetes management. Neuroimaging technology is considered a non-invasive method research the structure and function of the brain which have been widely used in neuroscience, psychiatry, psychology, and other fields. The development of Deep Learning Neural Network (DLNN), based on the deep learning algorithms of neural imaging techniques in brain disease diagnosis plays a more and more important role. In this paper, a deep neural network imaging technology based on Stack Auto-Encoder (SAE) feature extraction is constructed, and then Support Vector Machine (SVM) was used to solve binary classification problems (Alzheimer's disease [AD] and Mild Cognitive Impairment [MCI]). Four sets of experimental data were employed to perform the training and testing stages of DLNN. The number of neurons in each of the DLNNs was determined using the grid search technique. The advanced development of communication technologies has made covert communications quite challenging to be recognized. By altering an entity's timing behavior during overt network communication, a covert timing channel (CTC) provides a way to leak sensitive data. This is becoming a serious threat due to the ability to transmit hidden messages without being detected by traditional security systems such as proxies and firewalls. In this paper, we explore the automatic classification and identification of covert timing channels using deep neural networks, namely, Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), 1D-Convolutional Neural networks (1D-CNN), and a hybrid of LSTM and 1D-CNN. These classifiers have been trained and tested using sequence real inter-arrival times datasets labeled with covert or legitimate. The stream length differs for each dataset; (32, 64, 128, 256, and 512 bytes). Traditional machine-learning models have also been developed for comparisons and evaluation. Deep neural networks (DNNs) have gained prominence in various applications, but remain vulnerable to adversarial attacks that manipulate data to mislead a DNN. This paper aims to challenge the efficacy and transferability of two contemporary defense mechanisms against adversarial attacks: (a) robust training and (b) adversarial training. The former suggests that training a DNN on a data set consisting solely of robust features should produce a model resistant to adversarial attacks. The latter creates an adversarially trained model that learns to minimise an expected training loss over a distribution of bounded adversarial perturbations. We reveal a significant lack in the transferability of these defense mechanisms and provide insight into the potential dangers posed by L ∞ -norm attacks previously underestimated by the research community. Variable selection is one of the most important contents of machine learning research and a large number of variable selection methods have been proposed at present. From deep learning perspective, we propose a new variable selection method based on multi-layer artificial neural networks in this paper. The method propagates errors gained form a trained network model through the network from output layer to input layer and the values gained by input layer give information about the relative contribution. The variables with big contribution value are selected, which we call neural inverse propagation (NIP). Specifically, after training a neural network, the gained errors between the actual network outputs and the desired outputs go through the network from top to down and arrive at the input layer. The absolute values gained by input units provide information about the relative importance (contribution) of input units, which is that the larger the value is, the more important the corresponding input variable is. We remove k variables corresponding to the first k minimum absolute value gained by input units to the predictive variables, to perform variable selection. The efficiency of the proposed method is illustrated through its application to classification and regression tasks on a number of synthetic datasets and a real-world image classification dataset. Skin cancer is a common type of malignant tumor that poses a serious threat to patients' lives and health, especially melanoma. It may spread to other body parts, resulting in serious complications and death. In the medical field, accurate identification of skin lesion images is crucial for diagnosing different diseases. However, due to the similarity between different skin lesions, it brings some challenges to medical diagnosis. In this paper, a novel Ensemble Learning Model (EL‐DLOA) based on deep learning and optimization algorithms is proposed, which uses four different deep neural network architectures to generate confidence levels for classes, and optimization algorithms are used to integrate these confidence levels to make the final predictions. To ensure the model's accuracy and reliability, it is first trained using three different learning rates to find the best classification performance of the model. Then, a new search method based on the grey wolf optimization algorithm is proposed to enhance the grey wolf search efficiency. The method improves the search mechanism by changing the grey wolf's individual position through random perturbation or adaptive mutation, which solves the problem that the grey wolf algorithm is easy to fall into local optimum. Finally, four different ensemble strategies are used to reduce individual model bias in the classification process. The proposed model is trained and evaluated using the publicly available dataset HAM10000. The experimental results show that the improved grey wolf optimization algorithm effectively avoids the premature convergence problem and improves the search combination efficiency. Furthermore, in the ensemble methods, the adaptive weight average ensemble strategy effectively improves the classification performance, yielding accuracy, precision, recall, and F1 scores of 0.888, 0.837, 0.897, and 0.862, respectively. These metrics show varying degrees of improvement over the best performing single model. In general, the results indicate that the proposed method achieves high accuracy and practicality in skin lesion classification. Background: Diagnosis and treatment management for head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is guided by routine diagnostic head and neck computed tomography (CT) scans to identify tumor and lymph node features. The extracapsular extension (ECE) is a strong predictor of patients' survival outcomes with HNSCC. It is essential to detect the occurrence of ECE as it changes staging and treatment planning for patients. Current clinical ECE detection relies on visual identification and pathologic confirmation conducted by clinicians. However, manual annotation of the lymph node region is a required data preprocessing step in most of the current machine learning‐based ECE diagnosis studies. Purpose: In this paper, we propose a Gradient Mapping Guided Explainable Network (GMGENet) framework to perform ECE identification automatically without requiring annotated lymph node region information. Methods: The gradient‐weighted class activation mapping (Grad‐CAM) technique is applied to guide the deep learning algorithm to focus on the regions that are highly related to ECE. The proposed framework includes an extractor and a classifier. In a joint training process, informative volumes of interest (VOIs) are extracted by the extractor without labeled lymph node region information, and the classifier learns the pattern to classify the extracted VOIs into ECE positive and negative. Results: In evaluation, the proposed methods are well‐trained and tested using cross‐validation. GMGENet achieved test accuracy and area under the curve (AUC) of 92.2% and 89.3%, respectively. GMGENetV2 achieved 90.3% accuracy and 91.7% AUC in the test. The results were compared with different existing models and further confirmed and explained by generating ECE probability heatmaps via a Grad‐CAM technique. The presence or absence of ECE has been analyzed and correlated with ground truth histopathological findings. Conclusions: The proposed deep network can learn meaningful patterns to identify ECE without providing lymph node contours. The introduced ECE heatmaps will contribute to the clinical implementations of the proposed model and reveal unknown features to radiologists. The die shear test is a feasible and conventional method to characterize the shear strength of die‐attaching layer materials in electronic packaging. A new method for determining cohesive zone model (CZM) parameters using deep neural networks (DNN) and die shear tests is proposed, different from classical fracture framework or lap shear test‐based methods. With the sintered nano‐silver die shear test, the results show that the bilinear CZM inversion results agree well with the experimental results. It is found that the DNN model has high accuracy in predicting and identifying the maximum shear traction strength τmax, separation displacement of the interface δf, and the interface stiffness k1 of CZM parameters for sintered nano‐silver adhesive layer through die shear test load versus displacement curves. The presented DNN‐aided inverse identifying method through the die shear test in this paper could provide an alternative and convenient method for extracting CZM parameters of various kinds of adhesive materials in electronic packaging. The Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) protocol stands out as one of the foremost and widely recognized messaging protocols in the field. It is often used to transfer and manage data between devices and is extensively employed for applications ranging from smart homes and industrial automation to healthcare and transportation systems. However, it lacks built-in security features, thereby making it vulnerable to many types of attacks such as man-in-the-middle (MitM), buffer overflow, pre-shared key, brute force authentication, malformed data, distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, and MQTT publish flood attacks. Traditional methods for detecting MQTT attacks, such as deep neural networks (DNNs), k-nearest neighbor (KNN), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), and fuzzy logic, may exist. The increasing prevalence of device connectivity, sensor usage, and environmental scalability become the most challenging aspects that novel detection approaches need to address. This paper presents a new solution that leverages an H2O-based distributed machine learning (ML) framework to improve the security of the MQTT protocol in networks, particularly in IoT environments. The proposed approach leverages the strengths of the H2O algorithm and architecture to enable real-time monitoring and distributed detection and classification of anomalous behavior (deviations from expected activity patterns). By harnessing H2O's algorithms, the identification and timely mitigation of potential security threats are achieved. Various H2O algorithms, including random forests, generalized linear models (GLMs), gradient boosting machine (GBM), XGBoost, and the deep learning (DL) algorithm, have been assessed to determine the most reliable algorithm in terms of detection performance. This study encompasses the development of the proposed algorithm, including implementation details and evaluation results. To assess the proposed model, various evaluation metrics such as mean squared error (MSE), root-mean-square error (RMSE), mean per class error (MCE), and log loss are employed. The results obtained indicate that the H2OXGBoost algorithm outperforms other H2O models in terms of accuracy. Modern data mining techniques using machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) algorithms have been shown to excel in the regression-based task of materials property prediction using various materials representations. In an attempt to improve the predictive performance of the deep neural network model, researchers have tried to add more layers as well as develop new architectural components to create sophisticated and deep neural network models that can aid in the training process and improve the predictive ability of the final model. However, usually, these modifications require a lot of computational resources, thereby further increasing the already large model training time, which is often not feasible, thereby limiting usage for most researchers. In this paper, we study and propose a deep neural network framework for regression-based problems comprising of fully connected layers that can work with any numerical vector-based materials representations as model input. We present a novel deep regression neural network, iBRNet, with branched skip connections and multiple schedulers, which can reduce the number of parameters used to construct the model, improve the accuracy, and decrease the training time of the predictive model. We perform the model training using composition-based numerical vectors representing the elemental fractions of the respective materials and compare their performance against other traditional ML and several known DL architectures. Using multiple datasets with varying data sizes for training and testing, We show that the proposed iBRNet models outperform the state-of-the-art ML and DL models for all data sizes. We also show that the branched structure and usage of multiple schedulers lead to fewer parameters and faster model training time with better convergence than other neural networks. Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has gained a great deal of interest in recent years due to the need for information that can help many stakeholders (e.g., governments, investors, professional organizations, researchers, etc.) understand companies' contributions to the environment and society. CSR disclosure (CSRD) is now the key source of such information when analyzing, for example, an institution's future performance. In the current body of CSRD literature, the majority of quantitative CSRD studies have relied on traditional statistical approaches for the correlation analysis of CSRD influencing factors. In this paper, we intend to quantitatively analyze firms' characteristics related to CSRD in Saudi Arabia, understand CSRD and its influencing factors, and predict CSRD patterns. This study lays the groundwork to help companies make informed decisions. It also helps many other stakeholders better understand CSRD's impacts. To achieve this, we propose a deep learning framework based on long short-term memory (LSTM) for identifying and predicting CSRD patterns. Moreover, a correlation-based technique is also used to visualize the relationships between variables and identify the significant features. The dataset used in this study was collected from annual reports, CSR reports, and firms' websites between 2015 and 2018. It contains a variety of variables to explain the CSR behaviour of 117 companies. The proposed framework is evaluated with several approaches, including logistic regression (LR), K-nearest neighbours (KNN), support vector machines (SVM), random forests (RF), and decision trees (DT). Uncertainty quantification (UQ) in machine learning is currently drawing increasing research interest, driven by the rapid deployment of deep neural networks across different fields, such as computer vision and natural language processing, and by the need for reliable tools in risk-sensitive applications. Recently, various machine learning models have also been developed to tackle problems in the field of scientific computing with applications to computational science and engineering (CSE). Physics-informed neural networks and deep operator networks are two such models for solving partial differential equations (PDEs) and learning operator mappings, respectively. In this regard, a comprehensive study of UQ methods tailored specifically for scientific machine learning (SciML) models has been provided in [A. F. Psaros et al., J. Comput. Phys., 477 (2023), art. 111902]. Nevertheless, and despite their theoretical merit, implementations of these methods are not straightforward, especially in large-scale CSE applications, hindering their broad adoption in both research and industry settings. In this paper, we present an open-source Python library (https://github.com/Crunch-UQ4MI), termed NeuralUQ and accompanied by an educational tutorial, for employing UQ methods for SciML in a convenient and structured manner. The library, designed for both educational and research purposes, supports multiple modern UQ methods and SciML models. It is based on a succinct workflow and facilitates flexible employment and easy extensions by the users. The household load has high volatility and uncertainty, which plays an increasingly important role in short-term power load forecasting for individual residential customers in the operation and planning of future power grids. There is still room for improvement in the prediction accuracy of traditional machine learning and deep learning models. This paper firstly analyzes the complexity of household load data and formulates forecasting problems. Then, the principle of stochastic configuration network (SCN), stacking algorithm and a stacking integrated stochastic configuration network (Stacking-SCN) is introduced, which constructs a short-term household load forecasting model. By adaptively constraining the output weight distribution of the network model, the prediction accuracy can be improved. To show the prediction performance of the algorithm, the experiment comparing the Stacking-SCN model with incremental random vector functional link network (IRVFLN) models, the traditional SCN, ensemble-SCN (E-SCN), deep neural networks (DNN) and long short-term memory (LSTM), and verify it with RMSE, MAE and APE performance metrics. Experimental results show that Stacking-SCN can more effectively express the time series relationship of household short-term load, has higher prediction accuracy, effectively prevents network over-fitting problems, and improves the accuracy of prediction capabilities. Pyrolysis is one of the thermochemical methods used to produce value-added products from biomass. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is frequently used to examine the energy potential and thermal behavior of biomass, coal, and their blends. The investigation of the TGA data using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) is one of the most important research areas in recent years. While there are different research papers on the use of Machine Learning (ML) in this field, there is a lack of systematic application of deep learning (DL) algorithms. As such, we applied DL algorithms together with ML algorithms to evaluate the predictive performance of thermal behaviors of proposed bioenergy sources. Thermal behavior of tomato, pepper, eggplant, squash, and cucumber harvest wastes, the equal mass (20%) mixture of them, and the blends of the mixture with coal in the ratios of 20, 33, and 50% under nitrogen atmosphere were investigated by the TGA and ML models. Based on the pyrolysis thermal behavior of the harvest wastes, the eggplant, pepper, tomato, and 5-biomass mixture had the highest conversion potential. According to the thermal behavior of co-pyrolysis of coal and harvest waste mixtures, it had positive effects on pyrolysis conversion degrees and temperature range compared to the coal, and therefore, they can be used as alternative sources for energy production. The MSE and R 2 scores of Bi-directional LSTM demonstrate that an improved performance can be obtained with DL based solutions. Video-based peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) estimation, utilizing solely RGB cameras, offers a non-contact approach to measuring blood oxygen levels. Previous studies set a stable and unchanging environment as the premise for non-contact blood oxygen estimation. Additionally, they utilized a small amount of labeled data for system training and learning. However, it is challenging to train optimal model parameters with a small dataset. The accuracy of blood oxygen detection is easily affected by ambient light and subject movement. To address these issues, this paper proposes a contrastive learning spatiotemporal attention network (CL-SPO2Net), an innovative semi-supervised network for video-based SpO2 estimation. Spatiotemporal similarities in remote photoplethysmography (rPPG) signals were found in video segments containing facial or hand regions. Subsequently, integrating deep neural networks with machine learning expertise enabled the estimation of SpO2. The method had good feasibility in the case of small-scale labeled datasets, with the mean absolute error between the camera and the reference pulse oximeter of 0.85% in the stable environment, 1.13% with lighting fluctuations, and 1.20% in the facial rotation situation. Negation is a linguistic phenomenon that can cause sentences to have their meanings reversed. It frequently inverts affirmative sentences into negative ones, affecting the polarity; therefore, the sentiment of the text also changes accordingly. Negation can be expressed differently, making it somewhat challenging to detect. Machine learning with deep neural networks (DNNs) is widely used for human activity recognition (HAR) to automatically learn features, identify and analyze activities, and to produce a consequential outcome in numerous applications. However, learning robust features requires an enormous number of labeled data. Therefore, implementing a DNN either requires creating a large dataset or needs to use the pre-trained models on different datasets. Multitask learning (MTL) is a machine learning paradigm where a model is trained to perform multiple tasks simultaneously, with the idea that sharing information between tasks can lead to improved performance on each individual task. This paper presents a novel MTL approach that employs combined training for human activities with different temporal scales of atomic and composite activities. Atomic activities are basic, indivisible actions that are readily identifiable and classifiable. Composite activities are complex actions that comprise a sequence or combination of atomic activities. The proposed MTL approach can help in addressing challenges related to recognizing and predicting both atomic and composite activities. It can also help in providing a solution to the data scarcity problem by simultaneously learning multiple related tasks so that knowledge from each task can be reused by the others. The proposed approach offers advantages like improved data efficiency, reduced overfitting due to shared representations, and fast learning through the use of auxiliary information. The proposed approach exploits the similarities and differences between multiple tasks so that these tasks can share the parameter structure, which improves model performance. The paper also figures out which tasks should be learned together and which tasks should be learned separately. Over the past decade the use of machine learning in meteorology has grown rapidly. Specifically neural networks and deep learning have been used at an unprecedented rate. To fill the dearth of resources covering neural networks with a meteorological lens, this paper discusses machine learning methods in a plain language format that is targeted to the operational meteorological community. This is the second paper in a pair that aim to serve as a machine learning resource for meteorologists. While the first paper focused on traditional machine learning methods (e.g., random forest), here a broad spectrum of neural networks and deep learning methods is discussed. Specifically, this paper covers perceptrons, artificial neural networks, convolutional neural networks, and U-networks. Like the Part I paper, this manuscript discusses the terms associated with neural networks and their training. Then the manuscript provides some intuition behind every method and concludes by showing each method used in a meteorological example of diagnosing thunderstorms from satellite images (e.g., lightning flashes). This paper is accompanied with an open-source code repository to allow readers to explore neural networks using either the dataset provided (which is used in the paper) or as a template for alternate datasets. Simple Summary: In this paper, we introduce a new technique for enhancing medical image diagnosis through transfer learning (TL). The approach addresses the issue of limited labelled images by pre-training deep learning models on similar medical images and then refining them with a small set of annotated medical images. Our method demonstrated excellent results in classifying the humerus and wrist, surpassing previous methods, and showing greater robustness in various experiments. Furthermore, we demonstrate the adaptability of the approach with a CT case, which showed improvements in the results. Medical image classification poses significant challenges in real-world scenarios. One major obstacle is the scarcity of labelled training data, which hampers the performance of image-classification algorithms and generalisation. Gathering sufficient labelled data is often difficult and time-consuming in the medical domain, but deep learning (DL) has shown remarkable performance, although it typically requires a large amount of labelled data to achieve optimal results. Transfer learning (TL) has played a pivotal role in reducing the time, cost, and need for a large number of labelled images. This paper presents a novel TL approach that aims to overcome the limitations and disadvantages of TL that are characteristic of an ImageNet dataset, which belongs to a different domain. Our proposed TL approach involves training DL models on numerous medical images that are similar to the target dataset. These models were then fine-tuned using a small set of annotated medical images to leverage the knowledge gained from the pre-training phase. We specifically focused on medical X-ray imaging scenarios that involve the humerus and wrist from the musculoskeletal radiographs (MURA) dataset. Both of these tasks face significant challenges regarding accurate classification. The models trained with the proposed TL were used to extract features and were subsequently fused to train several machine learning (ML) classifiers. We combined these diverse features to represent various relevant characteristics in a comprehensive way. Through extensive evaluation, our proposed TL and feature-fusion approach using ML classifiers achieved remarkable results. For the classification of the humerus, we achieved an accuracy of 87.85%, an F1-score of 87.63%, and a Cohen's Kappa coefficient of 75.69%. For wrist classification, our approach achieved an accuracy of 85.58%, an F1-score of 82.70%, and a Cohen's Kappa coefficient of 70.46%. The results demonstrated that the models trained using our proposed TL approach outperformed those trained with ImageNet TL. We employed visualisation techniques to further validate these findings, including a gradient-based class activation heat map (Grad-CAM) and locally interpretable model-independent explanations (LIME). These visualisation tools provided additional evidence to support the superior accuracy of models trained with our proposed TL approach compared to those trained with ImageNet TL. Furthermore, our proposed TL approach exhibited greater robustness in various experiments compared to ImageNet TL. Importantly, the proposed TL approach and the feature-fusion technique are not limited to specific tasks. In this paper, lightweight deep learning methods are proposed to recognize multichannel electromyography (EMG) signals against varying contraction levels. The classical machine learning, and signal processing methods namely, linear discriminant analysis (LDA), quadratic discriminant analysis (QDA), root mean square (RMS), and waveform length (WL) are adopted to convolutional neural network (CNN), and long short-term memory neural network (LSTM). Eight-channel recordings of nine amputees from a publicly available dataset are used for training and testing the proposed models considering prosthetic control strategies. Six class hand movements with three contraction levels are applied to WL and RMS-based feature extraction. After that, they are formed into appropriate input dimensions, and classified using the LDA, QDA, LDA-CNN, QDA-CNN, LSTM, and CNN. Depending on three prosthetic EMG validation approaches (Scheme 1-3), the accuracy rates of 41.68%, and 47.27% are yielded by LDA, and QDA with 32-dimensional RMS, and WL features while CNN with 2×16 input has 82.87% (up to 88.10%). The effect of the learnable filters of the DL approaches, and signal windowing on the success rate and delay time are discussed in the paper. The simulations show that 2D-CNN (accuracy of 82.87% with 1.7 ms delay) can be successfully adapted to prosthetic control devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The deep groove ball bearing is one of the most important components of the rotary motion system and is the research subject in this paper. After factory assembly, new ball bearings need to pass quality control. The conventional approach relies on measuring the vibration amplitudes for each unit and sorting them into classes according to the vibration level. In this paper, based on experimental research, models are created to predict the vibration class and analyze the dynamic behavior of new ball bearings. The models are based on artificial neural networks. A feedforward multilayer perceptron (MLP) was applied, and a backpropagation learning algorithm was used. A specific method of training groups of artificial neural networks was applied, where each network provided an answer to the input within the group, and the final answer was the mean value of the answers of all networks in the group. The models achieved a prediction accuracy of over 90%. The main aim of the research was to construct models that are able to predict the vibration class of a new ball bearing based on the geometric parameters of the bearing rings. Since the discovery of the quasicrystal, approximately 100 stable quasicrystals are identified. To date, the existence of quasicrystals is verified using transmission electron microscopy; however, this technique requires significantly more elaboration than rapid and automatic powder X‐ray diffraction. Therefore, to facilitate the search for novel quasicrystals, developing a rapid technique for phase‐identification from powder diffraction patterns is desirable. This paper reports the identification of a new Al–Si–Ru quasicrystal using deep learning technologies from multiphase powder patterns, from which it is difficult to discriminate the presence of quasicrystalline phases even for well‐trained human experts. Deep neural networks trained with artificially generated multiphase powder patterns determine the presence of quasicrystals with an accuracy >92% from actual powder patterns. Specifically, 440 powder patterns are screened using the trained classifier, from which the Al–Si–Ru quasicrystal is identified. This study demonstrates an excellent potential of deep learning to identify an unknown phase of a targeted structure from powder patterns even when existing in a multiphase sample. Analysis of phylogenetic trees has become an essential tool in epidemiology. Likelihood-based methods fit models to phylogenies to draw inferences about the phylodynamics and history of viral transmission. However, these methods are often computationally expensive, which limits the complexity and realism of phylodynamic models and makes them ill-suited for informing policy decisions in real-time during rapidly developing outbreaks. Likelihood-free methods using deep learning are pushing the boundaries of inference beyond these constraints. In this paper, we extend, compare, and contrast a recently developed deep learning method for likelihood-free inference from trees. We trained multiple deep neural networks using phylogenies from simulated outbreaks that spread among 5 locations and found they achieve close to the same levels of accuracy as Bayesian inference under the true simulation model. We compared robustness to model misspecification of a trained neural network to that of a Bayesian method. We found that both models had comparable performance, converging on similar biases. We also implemented a method of uncertainty quantification called conformalized quantile regression that we demonstrate has similar patterns of sensitivity to model misspecification as Bayesian highest posterior density (HPD) and greatly overlap with HPDs, but have lower precision (more conservative). Finally, we trained and tested a neural network against phylogeographic data from a recent study of the SARS-Cov-2 pandemic in Europe and obtained similar estimates of region-specific epidemiological parameters and the location of the common ancestor in Europe. Along with being as accurate and robust as likelihood-based methods, our trained neural networks are on average over 3 orders of magnitude faster after training. Our results support the notion that neural networks can be trained with simulated data to accurately mimic the good and bad statistical properties of the likelihood functions of generative phylogenetic models. Supervised learning in deep neural networks is commonly performed using error backpropagation. However, the sequential propagation of errors during the backward pass limits its scalability and applicability to low-powered neuromorphic hardware. Therefore, there is growing interest in finding local alternatives to backpropagation. Recently proposed methods based on forward-mode automatic differentiation suffer from high variance in large deep neural networks, which affects convergence. In this paper, we propose the Forward Direct Feedback Alignment algorithm that combines Activity-Perturbed Forward Gradients with Direct Feedback Alignment and momentum. We provide both theoretical proofs and empirical evidence that our proposed method achieves lower variance than forward gradient techniques. In this way, our approach enables faster convergence and better performance when compared to other local alternatives to backpropagation and opens a new perspective for the development of online learning algorithms compatible with neuromorphic systems. • Forward Gradient methods suffer from high variance that hinders convergence. • Activity-Perturbed Forward Gradients can be used to learn derivatives as direct feedback connections. • Feedback learning acts as a momentum that reduces the gradient variance closer to backpropagation. • Feedback learning reduces the biasness of Direct Feedback Alignment. • Feedback learning enables learning in convolutional layers. In fiber optic communication systems, the presence of nonlinear noise has an impact on the performance of systems and needs to be reliably monitored. This paper first briefly introduced the fiber optic communication system and then applied a deep neural network (DNN). Eleven features were extracted from the optical signal, and the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) and nonlinear noise were monitored with the DNN. Moreover, experiments were carried out on the VPI Transmission Maker 9.0 platform to simulate both QPSK and 16QAM modulation formats. It was found that the means absolute error (MAE) value of the DNN was smaller than those of SVM and BPNN. The MAE of the DNN was smaller than 0.3 dB in OSNR monitoring and smaller than 1.2 dB in nonlinear monitoring. The experimental results demonstrate the reliability of the method combined with deep learning for nonlinear noise monitoring. The proposed method can be applied in practice. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
