This article focuses on the LVA Stars in Literacy campaign sponsored by the Literacy Volunteers of America in 1990. While the Hubble Space Telescope launch will be remembered by millions as the mission that revolutionized astronomy, 51 adult literacy students will remember it as the launch that allowed them to reach for the stars. When the shuttle lifted off, it carried with it a collection of 51 paper stars, each signed by an adult who learned to read through a local tutoring program. The adult readers represented all 50 states and the District of Columbia. After the stars returned to earth with the shuttle, they were certified by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration as having been into space and then returned to the students, who signed them for presentation to the governors of their states. The launching of the stars is part of a two-year awareness campaign sponsored by LVA. Through this campaign, LVA will honor those who support the cause of literacy, from public figures to volunteers to literacy students themselves.
