The main aim of this study was to define a procedure useful to evaluate the potential environmental, social and economic benefits contained in paper and cardboard (or other recyclables), which are wasted in the unsorted fraction of municipal solid waste (MSW). To give a practical example, the procedure was applied to the 550 municipalities of the Campania region, in Southern Italy, but the developed procedure is applicable in any context in an 'urban mining' perspective. The procedure consists of five phases and uses two methodologies: one for the estimation of the composition analysis of the unsorted residual waste and another for the calculation of sustainability indicators able to measure the benefits wasted in the unsorted residual MSW. Six indicators were defined: two for the environment (carbon footprint and ecological footprint), two for the society (health footprint and occupational benefits) and two for the economy (economic profit and economic saving). The first methodology was developed by the regional environmental protection agency to update the MSW regional management plan. The second methodology is based on the use of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) through which it was possible to calculate the reference parameters useful for the calculation of the impacts (i.e., loss of benefits) for recycling, mechanical and biological treatment (MBT), incineration and landfilling of paper and cardboard contained in the unsorted residual waste. The obtained results confirmed the presence of such an enormous deposit of recyclable materials contained in the unsorted residual waste, which is a potential source, but not exploited, of environmental, social and economic benefits. For instance, the paper and cardboard 'urban mine' of Naples was greater than 16 million of euro (economic profit + economic saving), with a potential saving of around 11.4 million of kgCO 2 eq. On-orbit servicing and on-orbit assembly represent very appealing mission concepts that could facilitate the exploitation of the space environment. Autonomy is a critical requirement for systems aimed at the execution of these operations. The development of enabling technologies for this type of missions is a focal research topic for the global space community. The AUTOMA project (University of Padua, Italy) aims at the development of technologies to enable the on-orbit assembly of a standardized modular unit by means of a robotic arm. The goal is the development of a capture interface, composed of a gripper mechanism and a suite of close-range navigation sensors (a navcam, four time-of-flight sensors, two custom matrix sensors based on a set of phototransistors), and the mock-up of a modular assembly unit. The paper prevalently focuses on the conspicuous series of tests that has been performed at subsystem level for the characterization of the two custom matrix sensors, both in terms of their resolution and range of application. In particular, the test campaign has proven how the in-plane matrix sensor provides information about lateral misalignment and relative distance with a resolution of a few millimetres while the roll matrix sensor provides information about the angular roll misalignment with a resolution dependent on the distance between the two bodies. This paper presents the first detailed analysis of cloud-to-ground (CG) and intra-cloud (IC) strokes characteristics from the Lightning Detection Network (LINET) over Italy and the Central Mediterranean area, a lightning active area in south Europe. We study the strokes over a 13-year period from 2010 to 2022, aiming to understand how it varies with different temporal scales (hourly, monthly, seasonally, and yearly), surface types (sea and land), and ground levels (0–100 m ; 100–200 m ; 200–400 m ; 400–800 m ; 800–1200 m ; 1200–2000 m and above 2000 m). We found that the stroke's maximum activity was observed in August; specifically, July has the maximum activity over the land with a maximum diurnal peak in the afternoon, while in September, the convection shifts over the sea with a secondary daily maximum in the morning. The largest current intensities are observed in January, over sea and during nighttime. Moreover we found that stroke current intensities, polarity and IC height emissions are influenced by ground altitude level. Our paper provides new insights into the spatio-temporal patterns and characteristics of lightning over Italy and the Central Mediterranean area, which can be useful for improving weather forecasting, climate modeling, risk assessment, and damage mitigation strategies in this area. • Orography has strong impact on lightning density, polarity, intensity and discharge height. • Vigorous convection develops over the land in summer and over the sea in autumn. • Overall stroke density reaches its peak in August. • Atmospheric instability decreases the breakdown threshold increasing weaker strokes. The main objective of this research is to explore an efficient mathematical model for the investigation of COVID-19 dynamics in a generalized fractional framework. The new model in this paper is formulated in the Caputo sense, employs a nonlinear time-varying transmission rate, and consists of ten population classes including susceptible, infected, diagnosed, ailing, recognized, infected real, threatened, diagnosed recovered, healed, and extinct people. The existence of a unique solution is explored for the new model, and the associated dynamical behaviours are discussed in terms of equilibrium points, invariant region, local and global stability, and basic reproduction number. To implement the proposed model numerically, an efficient approximation scheme is employed by the combination of Laplace transform and a successive substitution approach; besides, the corresponding convergence analysis is also investigated. Numerical simulations are reported for various fractional orders, and simulation results are compared with a real case of COVID-19 pandemic in Italy. By using these comparisons between the simulated and measured data, we find the best value of the fractional order with minimum absolute and relative errors. Also, the impact of different parameters on the spread of viral infection is analyzed and studied. According to the comparative results with real data, we justify the use of fractional concepts in the mathematical modelling, for the new non-integer formalism simulates the reality more precisely than the classical framework. The use of feed additives with antioxidant and immune response modulatory activity could be a useful strategy in suckling calves to reduce morbidity and mortality. This strategy is based on several feed additives tested for these purposes. The aim of the paper is the examination of a commercial feed additive for adult cows for use in calves, with and without nucleotide supplementation. Seventy-five Holstein Friesian male calves were divided in 3 groups, with each calf randomly assigned to a group according to birth order. All calves received 2 L of pooled colostrum within 2 h of birth. The commercial feed supplement group was orally administered with 5 g/head of Decosel (dried brewer's yeast lysate (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), brewer's yeast walls (Saccharomyces cerevisiae), diatoms, spirulina, barley flour, calcium carbonate; Agroteam srl, Torrimpietra, Italy) and the nucleotides + commercial feed supplement group was orally administered with 5 g/head of an additive containing 2.5 g of Decosel and 2.5 g of nucleotides once daily from birth to 25 d. The control group was orally administered 20 mL of fresh water/head once daily. Calves that received the supplement and the nucleotides showed lower rates of protein and metabolizable energy conversion, with longer villi and greater crypt depth in duodenum. Moreover, the commercial feed supplement alone increased antioxidant capacity [2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) and ferric-reducing antioxidant power] in plasma some activity of antioxidant liver enzymes, and peripheral blood mononuclear cell viability after in vitro concanavalin A and H 2 O 2 stimuli. Dietary supplementation with a commercial feed supplement containing yeast products (yeast cell walls and hydrolyzed yeast) and microalgae enhanced the redox balance and gut morphology in calves, allowing calves to improve their immune response, increasing resistance to stress. An innovative timber retrofit was investigated at the EUCENTRE and at the University of Pavia, Italy, as part of a comprehensive research campaign on the seismic vulnerability of existing unreinforced masonry buildings subjected to induced seismicity in The Netherlands. The retrofit system consists of timber frames, connected to the masonry piers and to the floor diaphragms, and oriented-strand board sheathing nailed to the frames and to flexible timber diaphragms. Starting from the main critical aspects observed in experimental tests, the proposed solution was conceived to enhance the in-plane and out-of-plane capacities of masonry piers, improve the overall wall-to-diaphragm connections, increase the floor diaphragm stiffness and strength, and allow possible integration with energy efficiency upgrades. This paper, the first of a series of two, focuses on the conceptual bases of the seismic retrofit system and on the analytical equations that can be used for the design of its components. Moreover, a step-by-step design procedure is presented to guide the reader through the application of these equations. We show, for the first time over Italy and over part of the central Mediterranean Basin, the impact of lightning data assimilation (LDA) on the strokes forecast for a long period. We use the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model coupled with the Dynamic Lightning Scheme (DLS) at convection allowing horizontal resolution (3 km). We carried out a two-seasons experiment (summer 2020 and fall 2021) providing the forecast of lightning and precipitation for the next 6 h (nowcasting), considering two sub-periods (0-3 h and 3-6 h) for verification. The LDA is done through a nudging scheme that increases the water vapor mass in the mixed-phase region based on observed flash density rates and simulated graupel mixing ratio. No changes are made to the model run if spurious convection is predicted or no flashes are observed. LDA can trigger convection missed by the control forecast, without LDA, and/or can redistribute the strokes predicted to be more consistent with observations. LDA has a positive impact on strokes forecast, improving correct forecasts and reducing false alarms. This improvement is however confined to the first three-hours of forecast with negligible to negative impact for longer time ranges, in line with other studies. The improvement pattern is different in summer and fall, depending on the convection development. The analysis of the Fraction Skill Score shows the usefulness of the forecast for practical purposes, considering the current areas used by the Civil Protection Department to issue meteorological alerts for intense convective events over Italy. Finally, it is shown that the forecast at the short-range (0−3 h) using LDA can improve the strokes forecast issued on the previous day, not using LDA, and the methodology of this paper can be applied to issue warnings and alerts as the storm is approaching. A brief examination of rainfall forecast shows positive impact of LDA at the short-range (0-3 h), with neutral impact for longer time ranges. The different impact of LDA on the strokes and precipitation forecasts is also highlighted. • Lightning data assimilation improves the lightning and precipitation forecast for the first three-hours in summer and fall. • The pattern of improvement is different in summer and fall. • The very short-term forecast refines the previous day forecast as the storm is approaching. Many historic centers in Italy and around the world consist of ancient masonry buildings closely packed together or constructed in clusters for defensive purposes. Alternatively, the recent population growth in modern megalopolises, coupled with the increasing use of reclaimed soils to address land scarcity, has resulted in the development of highly densely urbanized areas placed on soft or very soft soils. In both scenarios, neighboring structures, despite being structurally separate, may interact with one another through the underlying soil. To gain new insights into this phenomenon, the paper presents a comprehensive numerical study. It analyzes the static and dynamic responses of three closely-spaced shallow foundations in both the time and frequency domains using a rigorous 3D continuum approach. The conducted parametric study considers the effects of foundation spacing, oscillation frequency, and soil configuration (homogeneous or layered), quantifying their impact on the soil-foundation impedance matrix. The results of the numerical study reveal distinct responses between the central and lateral foundations of a group of three shallow foundations placed on the same subsoil. A comparison is drawn between the response of the pivotal foundation within a group of three identical footings and its response when paired or isolated. As an extension of an earlier work of the authors (Zeolla et al., 2023), a simplified approach is proposed to address cross-interaction effects in design practice. This approach introduces a set of group factors to modify the impedance matrix of the primary foundation when surrounded by closely-spaced neighbors. The practical approach is applied to estimate the increase in the fundamental period of a masonry terrace house. The cross-interaction effect is deemed non-negligible and warrants consideration in such squat structures, as it can result in significant increases in spectral acceleration along the ascending branch of the design spectrum. • Functional beta diversity is considered a key signature of many ecological processes. • We propose to decompose this variability into three additive components. • These three components can be used to portray the functional resemblance among sites on a ternary diagram. The variability in species composition among a set of sampling sites, or beta diversity, is considered a key signature of the ecological processes that shape the spatial structure of species assemblages. In this paper, we propose to decompose this variability into three additive components: i) the standard similarity in the (relative) abundances of species among sites, ii) the degree of functional dissimilarity between individuals of distinct species among sites, and iii) the degree of functional similarity between individuals of distinct species among sites, or beta redundancy. These three components can be used to portray the functional resemblance among sites on a ternary diagram. With the resulting ternary diagram of 'functional resemblance' we can relate various aspects of taxonomic and functional variability among sites to community assembly processes more completely than just looking at individual components. One of the main challenges for the construction of DEMO, the first fusion demonstration reactor, is the power exhaust issue. To deal with it, EUROfusion has undertaken the construction of DTT (Divertor Tokamak Test) facility which will be held in Frascati, Italy. It aims to test various divertor models which can be integrated and used under different plasma confinement configurations. The current design of DTT embed 54 divertor cassettes which must be anchored to the vacuum vessel using suitable fixation systems. This paper deals with the initial monotonic load assessment of the fixation system of the Fixation System which must ensure compliance with multiple design requirements. The Remote Handling compatibility is one of the most demanding, since it includes a preloading phase of the divertor necessary to mitigate the shaking of the cassette due to dynamic forces. Moreover, the system must withstand the conspicuous loads acting on the Divertor due to the full or partial loss of plasma confinement (Disruptive Events). Structural verifications through Finite Element Method (FEM) have been performed on the Divertor-Fixation System, considering a set of load combinations, with particular focus on the most demanding case related to Fast-transient Vertical Disruption Event-downward. • Estimation of damping ratios on a short-span RC bridge with half-joints beam through AVTs in in-service conditions. • Minimum signal length to minimize the bias in the damping estimation. • Analysis of the damping with a fixed-length moving window over the entire vibration signatures. • Correlation between signals properties and estimated damping parameters. Experimental tests for dynamic identification of reinforced concrete (RC) bridges by means of Operational Modal Analysis (OMA) are increasingly used in common engineering practice. Nevertheless, especially when measurements are carried out under in-service conditions (i.e. under traffic induced vibrations), some drawbacks should be carefully considered, especially in the damping-ratio quantification. As a matter of fact, the estimation is affected by several factors: i) the length of the signals, ii) the non-stationarity of the input process, and iii) the dependence on the vibration amplitude. Even if the damping ratio is a key parameter in the bridge dynamics, a major part of these aspects has not been yet fully investigated to estimate reliable values. Starting from a dynamic test program on a short-span RC bridge with half-joints in Italy, this paper investigates the issues mentioned above for the damping ratio estimation of the first two modes focusing on: i) the influence of the signal length, ii) the effects of the signals properties, and iii) their correlation with the vibration amplitude. Both the Stochastic Subspace Identification technique fed with the signal covariance (SSI-cov) and the Random Decrement technique (RD) have been used to compute the damping ratios from the collected signals. This paper shows how a convergence of the results cannot be attained by simply increasing the sample size, suggesting that the nature of the vibration itself influences the damping values. A negative, although weak, correlation between the damping ratio and the power of the signals indicates that several factors play a crucial role in the damping estimation in the short span RC bridges with half-joints. The paper explores the alignment and misalignment of objectives within private companies and public organizations in their approach to the circular economy. While many studies have investigated the alignment within single actor types, this research reveals the dynamics of alignment when private companies and public organizations engage. Drawing upon qualitative research protocol, our study employs a circular economy financing initiative implemented in Italy as the empirical foundation for investigating these dynamics. The results highlight the positive repercussions when private companies and public organizations achieve perfect alignment, which triggers internal transformations within both entities. However, perfect alignment is seldom achieved. Our findings thus contribute to the literature by proposing actor misalignment as a potential barrier to the circular economy. A severe weather event is analyzed in terms of cell development, dynamics, and thermodynamics. The Mediterranean region is sporadically affected by severe weather events causing damage and injuries. An unusual and severe weather event hit Italy on July 9–10, 2019 causing heavy damage. The meteorological structure was characterized by a trough entering the eastern Mediterranean area from northeastern Europe affecting Italy and the Balkans with cold-air advection over the Adriatic Sea. On the morning of 10 July 2019, a supercell developed along the coast north of Pescara (central Italy), producing intense rainfall (130 mm/3 h) and a heavy hailstorm with hailstones larger than 10 cm in diameter. In this work, the dynamics and thermodynamics for triggering and maintenance of the supercell are investigated using the numerical model WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting system), satellite, radar-data, soundings, and ground observations. In the companion paper, the role of SST and orography was investigated assessing that the SST spatial representation, its anomaly distribution and the topography play a key role in triggering the supercell (Ricchi et al., 2023). In this paper, high spatial and temporal-resolution model simulations and observations are used to investigate the characteristics of the supercell by analyzing both its horizontal and vertical structure. This paper studies the relationship between environmental concern and household separate waste collection, controlling for social capital, in Italy in the year 1998 when policy makers started to raise awareness of the importance of waste prevention, disposal and recycling. At the time, the public's sensitivity and attitude to waste issues were mainly influenced by their own lifestyles. We consider five separate waste collections, namely paper, plastic, glass, aluminium and food waste, to be taken to the relevant roadside containers. It focuses on three types of environmental concerns, classified as egoistic, altruistic and biospheric, and identifies five measures of general environmental issues able to match the different types of concerns considered. It also controls for three types of social relations: bonding, bridging and linking social capital. We use the dataset from the Multipurpose Household Survey, conducted by the Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT), and five probit models to shape the number of separate waste collections. The results show that greater concern for waste production and disposal, pollution, climate change, resource depletion and alteration of environmental heritage is related to a higher likelihood of doing household waste recycling. Nonetheless, for the highest number of separate waste collections, the magnitude of the marginal effect of environmental concern variables decreases, showing the relevance of marginal costs in recycling behaviour. Circular actions cannot be considered sustainable if their financial benefits are not demonstrated. While the environmental benefits of the circular economy have been widely studied, sustainable development from a financial point of view has been much less studied. In this paper we assess the financial benefits of circular innovations applied in the fashion industry that have been previously assessed as sustainable using the Life Cycle Assessment. The focus is on two innovative processes such as salt recovery and tannin baths reuse that reuse water, chemicals and raw materials in an Italian small company operating in the tanning industry. A cost benefit analysis was carried to evaluate the net contribution of these actions to the operating margin. Then we model a forward-looking cash flow projection in order to determine the fundamental value of circular investments. Through these practices, the company achieved an increase in operating profitability above 30% and the 10-year value of the salt recovery is 159,061.40 euros, while the reused tanning water equals just over one million euros. The results show unexpected and strong financial benefits that can leverage similar initiatives that would advance resource equity and finally promote a real and convenient industrial dedication to environmental guardianship. • There are few examples of field survey data being utilized to test the effectiveness of UN SDG indicator 15.3.1. • The annual mean of NDVI shows some weakness in detecting land productivity dynamics. • Remote sensing coupled with a cloud-based computing platform may improve knowledge of the land productivity index. • The trend of maximum NDVI values appears more suitable for the assessing of land degradation processes. • Analysis of finer resolution satellite datasets is the best solution for regional/local contexts. Land degradation is a critical issue at a global level and its progressive increasing greatly reduces soil ecosystem services. In this context, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, defined the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and indicated some targets of particular interest for a territory to be integrated into short- and medium-term national programs. Target 15.3, which aims to end desertification and restore degraded lands, is currently monitored by indicator 15.3.1, measured as the combination of three sub-indicators (trends in land cover change, land productivity and carbon stocks) as suggested by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), the custodian agency for the SDG indicator. In our opinion, this assessment shows some weakness that are generally caused by a lack of information from direct field observations. The greatest limitation regards land productivity dynamics linked to the NDVI trajectory adopted by the UNCCD methodological approach. For this reason, the paper proposes an alternative approach that consists of using annual maximum NDVI value assessments instead of annual mean values for trajectory calculation. To come to these conclusions, the study addresses a reliability assessment by using remote sensing techniques via the Google Earth Engine (GEE) and analysing the NDVI evolution over time at 450 locations spread around the Campania region (southern Italy). To this end, a customised Graphical User Interface (GUI) was built on the GEE platform and a Google Earth time slider tool was applied to visualize land cover changes which occurred at each location over a period of 18 years (2001–2018). The survey was carried out on MODIS and Landsat 7 collections and showed that the new approach had a better performance than the UNCCD approach (90 % vs 62 % of successful reliability tests, up to 96 % considering results from Landsat images). The application of maximum NDVI values to assess productivity dynamics spatially shows, with regard to UNCCD data, more than double the percentages of degraded and stable lands and a drastic reduction in improved areas within the Campania region. Overall, this innovative approach appears to agree more closely with ground truth and the use of finer resolution data is more suitable for investigating land degradation processes within a regional context. In dealing with personnel management in companies, two fundamental planning issues have to be handled: staff rostering and activities assignment. These two problems have historically been treated separately, in a sequential way; however, it is evident how strongly they are tied to each other and that solution quality inevitably drops if this connection is not taken into proper account. For this reason, also taking advantage of the massive recent advances in software and hardware technologies, the integrated task scheduling and personnel rostering problem (TSPR) has been formalized along with suitable algorithmic approaches to tackle both planning stages altogether. In this paper, we describe how the peculiar and complex case of airport ground staff was handled in a scenario defined by real-world data from a large airport in Italy. Specifically, we show that the problem can be cast into a mixed integer linear programming model. We then show that, to make the problem computationally tractable, the introduction within the model of a set of suitable valid inequalities is crucial. Indeed, as opposed to the base model from the literature, the novel, improved formulation allowed to effectively obtain near-optimal solutions in reasonable time even for the considered large-scale and real-world scenario. • The problem of simultaneously deciding shifts and duties in airports is addressed. • The resulting Integrated TSPR problem can be modeled as a MIP program. • The introduction of valid inequalities into the model is computationally beneficial. • 10 large real-world instances of the problem have been solved. The paper deals with the energy transition, focusing on the decisions to be taken about the change in the energy conversion capacity of specified portion of the universe, such as industrial or domestic districts, regions, countries, etc. Conversion capacity is intended here as the set of all energy conversion and storage units characterized by type, size and number, and interacting with the natural gas and electricity grids. The goal is to find guidelines for new installations, obtained by simulations of a model able to describe properly the behavior of each energy conversion technology and the interaction with grids. The model is based on a traditional MILNP approach, but contains unique features in the literature, which allow to obtain results of general validity for applications to very different geographical areas, or to countries including very different regions that transmit energy with each other or export/import it from abroad. The main novelty of this work is to identify the best planning for the decarbonisation of energy demand sectors, according to the criterion of minimum cost, both at global and at regional level. This paper studies the influence of temperature and of rainfall intensity and the effect of such variations on the treatment efficiencies and on the electrical consumptions in seven medium-large size Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) in Apulia in South Italy (Bari, Barletta, Brindisi, Lecce, Foggia, Andria and Taranto). It has been observed, in the considered WWTPs, a slight but clear increase of the incoming flow due to the increase in rainfall intensity, which results to an increase of the energy consumption per incoming volume. The impact of the climate change to the incoming flow, during the last five years (2016–2020), has been assessed indicating that an increase in rainfall intensity results to an increase of the WWTPs energy consumptions per wastewater treated volume. More specifically, for a specific WWTP (Lecce) it was found that the electrical consumption increases from 0.36 kw/m3 to 0.51 kw/m3 when the rainfall intensity was increased from 0.8 mm/min to 2.9 mm/min. Some adaption measures have been considered to upgrade the existing WWTP so to mitigate the energy increase and to limit the global effects of climate change. The seismic stability assessment of anthropogenic cavities is a challenging issue for land and urban planning, particularly in areas of possible interaction with surface structures and infrastructures. The paper proposes a novel methodology for the preliminary assessment at urban scale of the safety level against roof collapse of underground cavities under seismic actions through seismic stability charts, SSCs. The SSCs are the result of extensive parametric two-dimensional FEM analyses focused on cavities excavated in soft rock, as it is frequent in many inhabited areas all over the world. The study is mainly oriented to the instability of shallow cavities, includingthe effects at the ground surface. The SSCs allow evaluation of stability conditions of a generic cavity through a factor of safety, calculated as the minimum ratio between the resistant and loading bending moment of the critical sections of the cavity roof during the whole earthquake duration. During major floods, rivers erode their banks and thus recruit large wood pieces from the riparian zones. There is still a lack of knowledge about the transport of large wood, the volumes involved and the flux distribution, i.e. the large wood connectivity at catchment scale. During storm Alex (October 2020), the French Roya catchment (394 km2) experienced a paroxysmal morphogenic flood involving massive bank erosion. The riparian vegetation was largely recruited, with large wood contributing to logjams and bridge destruction. This paper presents a methodology for volumetric assessment of the large wood fluxes involved. Simple approaches are used to (i) quantify the inputs from stand density data from the national forest inventory and from source areas based on diachronic analysis of active channels highlighting the erosion of 87 ha of wooded areas; and (ii) quantify the volumes deposited via an exhaustive manual digitisation of 16,846 pieces of large wood deposited on 59 km of channels on the Roya and its tributaries. This catchment-scale, large wood connectivity analysis shows that the flood recruited and transported downstream a volume of around 14,000 m3 of large wood (uncertainty range: 7000–29,500 m3). This paper aims at evaluating the best allocation of potential biomethane generation for the decarbonization of the transport system, presenting a case study in Italy. The country has some peculiar features, such as several operating biogas plants, additional potential feedstock for biogas/biomethane generation, a well-developed natural gas network and established relevant natural gas uses in different final sectors, including transport. Based on current estimates for sustainable biomethane potential by 2030, ranging from 2.3 to 7.6 billion cubic meters depending on the scenario, the analysis compares technologies for the generation, distribution and final use of biomethane. The results of the analysis confirm the potential interesting contribution of biomethane in decarbonizing the Italian transport system: a billion cubic meters of biomethane can lead to 2.33–4.37 Mt CO 2 e savings, depending on the feedstock mix and the application. On a national basis, annual climate emission savings in 2030 range from 10.0 to 26.7 Mt CO 2 e , depending on the scenario. Additional 3.1–8.1 Mt CO 2 of emissions can be avoided if the CO 2 captured during the biomethane upgrading can be stored or reused. Beam-column joint behavior in Reinforced Concrete (RC) structures is a key issue for earthquake engineering, because, under seismic loads, these elements are subjected to high stresses, which could lead to unexpected collapses, due to the development of brittle failure mechanisms. In Italy, many existing RC buildings constructed before the mid-1970's present structural deficiencies, as they were designed in the absence of the prescriptions of modern seismic codes. In particular, the use of plain reinforcing bars, inappropriate anchorage solutions and the lack of joint horizontal hoops are rather widespread. This paper presents an in-depth overview on seismic behavior of interior beam-column joints reinforced with plain bars, under cyclic loads, based on experimental results available in the literature. The inadequacies of certain reinforcement arrangements and details of tested joints are highlighted. A critical discussion of the damages and failure mechanisms developed in the joints, in relation to the reinforcement details and to the effects of the main influencing parameters, is provided. These parameters are the mechanical properties of materials, the geometry of the joint and the converging elements, and the column axial load. A formula to predict shear strength of joints with plain bars is proposed. Due to the lack of similar papers in the literature, the present analysis constitutes the basis for a comprehensive understanding of behavior of interior joints with plain bars under seismic actions. Moreover, due to the absence in the main current Codes of design formulas for the shear strength assessment of existing beam-column joints with plain bars, a design formula is also proposed. This paper moves from the relevance that greenwashing has assumed in recent years and aims to investigate whether the environmental claims made by companies truly reflect their actions. Specifically, it analyzes the relationship between environmental claims and strategic intentionality toward environmental sustainability, proxied by the use and weight of incentives linked to environmental targets in executive compensation plans. By adopting this approach, the study offers a more nuanced perspective on greenwashing, addressing the limitations of the prevalent performance-based view. Based on the analysis of the companies listed on the FTSE Italia All-share index 2021, the paper highlights that companies that draft sustainability plans and declare carbon neutrality goals tend to include environmental targets in their executive compensation plans more frequently and with greater weights compared to other companies. Conversely, merely reporting environmental performance in sustainability (or integrated) reports is not associated with the use of environmental targets in executive compensation plans, suggesting the potential existence of greenwashing practices. In the alpine environment, rainfall-induced shallow landslides can involve thin covers of colluvial soil (50–300 cm) on terraced belts that were formed as a result of fill-and-cut sedimentary processes that followed the deglaciation of the alpine valleys. Notably, research on shallow slope failures involving alpine terraces consisting of a near-flat upper ground surface ("tread") and a moderately steep scarp ("riser") is lacking in the literature. This paper describes the engineering geological characteristics and failure mechanisms of a large number of shallow landslides (soil slips or slide-debris flows) that were activated on alpine stratified colluvial terraces due to a rainstorm that hit the mountain area of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region (NE Italy) on 21–22 June 1996. The paper reports data on the geomorphological and engineering geological characteristics of the soil slips acquired through extensive fieldwork and shows the outcomes of some two-dimensional seepage and slope stability analyses that were carried out in order to investigate the critical hydrological conditions and mechanisms that were responsible for the soil slip activation during and after rainfall. The soil slip activation can occur at two different stages during the infiltration process, based on the interacting water flows through the terrace tread and riser. The first critical stability condition is reached during the phases of greater precipitation intensity or at the end of the rainstorm because of the saturation of the top soil layer on the terrace riser and the subsequent formation of an ephemeral water table accompanied by a seepage sub-parallel to the slope face. The second critical condition is achieved some hours after the end of rainfall as a result of a tread-to-riser water outflow that is supplied by the water amount stored within the near-flat terrace tread during the peak rainfall stages (reservoir-like effect). This study also shows that a critical value of rainfall intensity of about 40–45 mm/h can cause the activation of soil slips in mountain basins characterised by a humid continental climate and by the occurrence of colluvial deposits with a high content of fine fraction. This paper investigates the heterogeneous impact of school closures during Covid-19 pandemic in Italy on academic performance across different schools, grades, subjects and groups of students. Our analysis utilises an innovative dataset that combines administrative data on standardised tests in grades 5 and 8 with a specifically-designed survey that collects information about teachers' practices between February and June 2020. Firstly, by employing a multilevel (mixed-effects) model, we estimate the extent of learning loss and examine its variability across schools, for students in primary and middle levels during the school year 2020/21. The findings confirm that learning loss has been considerable (between 0.05 and 0.27 SD) although heterogeneity across disciplines and grades exists – higher in English in grade 5, and in mathematics and reading in grade 8. Secondly, as a main contribution of the paper, we explore the mechanisms behind the substantial differences observed across schools, which can be explained by the ability of teachers in using digital tools and evaluating their students, as well as by the leadership role exerted by school principals. Nowadays, Artificial intelligence (AI), combined with the digitalization of healthcare, can lead to substantial improvements in Patient Care, Disease Management, Hospital Administration, and supply chain effectiveness. Among predictive analytics tools, time series forecasting represents a central task to support healthcare management in terms of bookings and medical services predictions. In this context, the development of flexible frameworks to provide robust and reliable predictions became a central point in this healthcare innovation process. This paper presents and discusses a multi-source time series fusion and forecasting framework relying on Deep Learning. By combining weather, air-quality and medical bookings time series through a feature compression stage which preserves temporal patterns, the prediction is provided through a flexible ensemble technique based on machine learning models and a hybrid neural network. The proposed system is able to predict the number of bookings related to a specific medical examination for a 7-days horizon period. While many efforts are currently devoted to vaccines development and administration, social distancing measures, including severe restrictions such as lockdowns, remain fundamental tools to contain the spread of COVID-19. A crucial point for any government is to understand, on the basis of the epidemic curve, the right temporal instant to set up a lockdown and then to remove it. Different strategies are being adopted with distinct shades of intensity. USA and Europe tend to introduce restrictions of considerable temporal length. They vary in time: a severe lockdown may be reached and then gradually relaxed. An interesting alternative is the Australian model where short and sharp responses have repeatedly tackled the virus and allowed people a return to near normalcy. After a few positive cases are detected, a lockdown is immediately set. In this paper we show that the Australian model can be generalized and given a rigorous mathematical analysis, casting strategies of the type short-term pain for collective gain in the context of sliding-mode control , an important branch of nonlinear control theory. This allows us to gain important insights regarding how to implement short-term lockdowns, obtaining a better understanding of their merits and possible limitations. Effects of vaccines administration in improving the control law's effectiveness are also illustrated. Our model predicts the duration of the severe lockdown to be set to maintain e.g. the number of people in intensive care under a certain threshold. After tuning our strategy exploiting data collected in Italy, it turns out that COVID-19 epidemic could be e.g. controlled by alternating one or two weeks of complete lockdown with one or two months of freedom, respectively. Historical masonry aggregates represent a large portion of the cultural heritage in Italy and are highly vulnerable to seismic actions, as shown by past seismic events. Typically, they are large and complex structures for which there is a lack of knowledge and information concerning the structural behavior, in particular as far as the response to seismic actions is concerned. This paper investigates the seismic response of two complex historical masonry aggregates located in Sora (Lazio region, Central Italy), through advanced 3D FE numerical simulations. For each aggregate, a detailed 3D FE model is developed and analyzed in the non-linear dynamic range, assuming that masonry behaves as a damaging-plastic material with almost vanishing tensile strength. The seismic performance of the two aggregates is evaluated in terms of damage distribution, energy density dissipated by tensile damage and maximum normalized displacements. The numerical analyses show the high vulnerability of the perimeter walls. In particular, the units at the extremities of the aggregate are subjected to large displacements, being not efficiently braced by the adjacent units and being subjected to the torsional effects induced by the seismic action. The presence of several openings is a fundamental feature that significantly decreases the strength of the perimeter walls, influencing the damage distribution in the aggregate mainly due to out-of-plane actions. The most damaged elements are generally the walls of the tall units without lateral support and the adjacent slabs covering large spans. Numerical results also show that the structural response of a single building unit is affected by the interactions with adjacent structural parts. Moreover, it can be stated that a preliminary structural assessment through kinematic limit analysis on partial failure mechanisms may be reliable only after a proper estimation of the different structural elements playing a role in the horizontal behavior (e.g. interlocking between walls, typology of masonry, distribution of horizontal loads, constraints and dead loads distribution, etc.). The obtained results will be also used in an accompanying paper to benchmark simplified approaches that can be employed by engineers in common design practice to quickly predict the seismic vulnerability of masonry aggregates and define the most suitable strengthening interventions. The relationship between tourism development and environmental degradation is one of the policy agenda for sustainable tourism. Tourism in protected areas is a complex phenomenon, which brings both positive and negative effects on the environment and local communities. The transition toward forms of sustainable mobility, such as electric boats, allows to reconcile tourist activities with preservation of protected areas, strengthening the links between land use and transport. The aim of this paper has been the investigation tourists' preferences to elicit their willingness to pay for the introduction of electric boat fleet in the Regional Park of Trasimeno Lake, a protected area in Italy, in order to reduce CO2 emissions. Data were collected by means of questionnaires. The impact of uncertainty on contingent valuation responses using three different approaches has been used. Also the effects of pricing CO2 emissions from boating activities have been investigated. The research results show that variables such as sex, age and visits' duration of stay have an impact on the respondents' willingness to pay and the related uncertainty. Considering two electrification options of the fleet, simulation results indicate that both price premiums and a subsidy policy are needed for electric boats deployment. Abstract An increasing number of cities are engaging with the sharing economy, exploring how it may be integrated into the urban agenda, fostering its positive aspects whilst avoiding its negative externalities. The paper focuses on two cities, Milan and Seoul, that are internationally considered to have a conscious and tailored approach that lies in the vanguard of this effort. The paper seeks to understand how local authorities govern the sharing economy in order to shape a real sharing city , taking insights from the sharing paradigm concept and looking to the collaborative version of the urban governance paradigm. The paper uses a mixed method approach to develop case studies of the governance models employed. The analysis shows that both cities work along the three dimensions (economic, technological and human) of the sharing paradigm to create a sharing city, with slightly different governance approaches, but both lack institutionalized mechanisms of collaboration. Nevertheless, both are pioneering examples of engagement with the sharing economy. The issue of food waste is increasingly attracting scientific and public interest due to the magnitude of the problem (in terms of quantity and global reach) and the growing attention to healthy and sustainable food production and consumption. As a consequence, an increasing number of initiatives aim to reduce the food discarded in each stage of the supply chain, from production and storage down to cooking and consumption. Still, food waste remains an unsolved issue, and many initiatives struggle to move from the design stage to full-scale implementation. This research paper focuses on a successful food waste reduction project in a school canteen in northern Italy. The case study illustrated in this paper demonstrates how it is possible to implement an effective initiative to reduce food waste with limited investment by leveraging the involvement of stakeholders. The obligations arising from legislation and other instruments affect the macro-level decision-making related to the transition toward a circular economy (CE), which is a multifaceted topic since it tries to aggregate the interests of different stakeholders. In this context, this paper aims to analyse the current policies, strategies and initiatives related to the CE transition from a multicriteria perspective and under the lens of NIT (New Institutional Theory). This is the first approach that analyses which CE strategies and related practices boost the transition from a macro-level perspective, using a multicriteria method and considering developed and emerging economies. For this reason, this paper can be helpful for researchers and practitioners involved in implementing strategy and policymaking aimed at the transition toward a CE. It also contributes to the discussion on the global transition to the CE by identifying differences and similarities between countries. The proposed methodology has been applied to compare the realities in Italy and Brazil. The perceptions of several stakeholders from the two countries have been gathered through a questionnaire to evaluate numerous strategies against several social, environmental, economic, and technical criteria. The main results are: Italy presents a proactive behaviour, a higher level of institutionalisation, and a coercive isomorphism related to European regulations and strategies. In contrast, Brazil has reactive behaviour, a lower level of institutionalisation, and is impelled by mimetic isomorphism. Although it is possible to observe several advances in the last years in Brazil, the transition to a CE is still in the early stages compared to Italy. This paper estimates the environmental impact of different diets and explores how changes in the diet composition can reduce Carbon Footprint and Ecological Footprint, meanwhile ensuring that diets are nutritionally adequate, culturally acceptable for consumers, and affordable form an economic standpoint. Focusing on Italy as one of the main Mediterranean countries, the paper develops a Sustainable Diet Model to explore the environmental impact of different diets. The results indicate that the reduction of diet-related environmental impact can be achieved also without complete exclusion of animal-based products and provide novel insights for future policies geared at promoting sustainable food consumption and at achieving international sustainability goals. The importance of Safety Management Systems (SMS) to the railway industry is underlined by the fact that all organisations operating on UK railways are required by law to have one. Analysing SMSs can provide a reliable systemic tool to identify hazards and weaknesses within complex systems like the railway, making it possible to significantly increase safety, reducing the odds of near misses and accidents. However, there is little empirical research evidence to determine the impact on safety of a structured SMS. The current paper describes two studies which use Bayesian Belief Networks (BBN) to conceptualise SMSs and their impact on front-line performance. The paper presents the usefulness of BBNs to compare complex systems and reconcile cultural differences within the railway industry, identifying factors that are deemed vital within Italy and Britain. The two studies allowed us to identify the most influential factors within a SMS and how they interact with each other, as well as the strength of the identified relationships. A BBN is particularly useful in estimating how changing some of the node states (e.g., by making safety leadership present) affected the other factors. So far, energy planning methods faced several challenges in achieving a proper assessment due to the extreme variability of input conditions. To considerably decrease the computational efforts in achieving solutions, most of the analyses reported in the scientific literature assume constant costs and demand over the entire planning horizon in a typical year. However, results might not be perfectly aligned with real ones because of the incapability of some models to address several aspects like energy demand/production variability, energy and technology costs, efficiency degradation, and use of different energy carriers. This paper proposes a novel methodology that optimises both the long-term planning and short-term scheduling decisions in the management of a multi-energy carries community by means of a Mixed Integer Linear Programming model that also considers the modular design of technologies (e.g., technological devices selection from a discrete set of variants). Such a model has been applied to the case study of a University campus in Italy, whose historical demand data were used for its energy planning with a time horizon of 30 years. Three scenarios have been analysed: (i) the Business As Usual, (ii) the Sector-coupling scenario, and, finally, (iii) the Hydrogen deployment one. The results are obtained under different energy scenarios, showing the effectiveness of the methodology in dealing with multi-investment stages at different planning levels in a reasonable computational time. In particular, they showed that deploying more sustainable technologies would increase the cost of the electricity (between 43%–89%), while reducing other energy carriers' cost (about 60%) and lowering all energy carriers' carbon footprint (between 50%–80%). The knowledge of crop evapotranspiration is crucial for several hydrological processes, including those related to the management of agricultural water sources. In particular, the estimations of actual evapotranspiration fluxes within fields are essential to managing irrigation strategies to save water and preserve water resources. Among the indirect methods to estimate actual evapotranspiration, ET a , the eddy covariance (EC) method allows to acquire continuous measurement of latent heat flux (LE). However, the time series of EC measurements are sometimes characterized by a lack of data due to the sensors' malfunctions. At this aim, Machine Learning (ML) techniques could represent a powerful tool to fill possible gaps in the time series. In this paper, the ML technique was applied using the Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) algorithm to fill gaps in daily actual evapotranspiration. The technique was tested in six different plots, two in Italy, three in the United States of America, and one in Canada, with different crops and climatic conditions in order to consider the suitability of the ML model in various contexts. For each site, the climate variables were not the same, therefore, the performance of the method was investigated on the basis of the available information. Initially, a comparison of ground and reanalysis data, where both databases were available, and between two different satellite products, when both databases were available, have been conducted. Then, the GPR model was tested. The mean and the covariance functions were set by considering a database of climate variables, soil water status measurements, and remotely sensed vegetation indices. Then, five different combinations of variables were analyzed to verify the suitability of the ML approach when limited input data are available or when the weather variables are replaced with reanalysis data. Cross-validation was used to assess the performance of the procedure. The model performances were assessed based on the statistical indicators: Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), coefficient of determination (R2), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), regression coefficient (b), and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient (NSE). The quite high Nash Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) coefficient, and the root mean square error (RMSE) low values confirm the suitability of the proposed algorithm. • GPR algorithm is suitable to fill gaps in daily ET a time series. • The best m(x) and k(x,x') functions required by the GPR algorithm were identified. • The best results were obtained when the dataset included climate data, SWC and VIs. • The use of ERA5-L data and VIs retrieved by Sentinel 2 or MODIS is a good alternative. • GPR algorithm was tested for different crops in continental and temperate zones. This paper aims to predict the economic resilience to crises of territories based on local pre-existing socioeconomic characteristics. Specifically, we consider the case of Italian municipalities during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, leveraging a large-scale dataset of cardholders performing transactions in Point-of-Sales. Based on a set of machine learning classifiers, we show that network-based measures and variables related to the social, economic, demographic and environmental dimensions are relevant predictors of the economic resilience of Italian municipalities to the crisis. In particular, we find accurate classification performance both in balanced and un-balanced scenarios, as well as in the case we restrict the analysis to specific geographical areas. Our analysis predicts that territories with larger income per capita, soil consumption, concentration of real estate activities and commuting network centrality in terms of closeness and Pagerank constitute the set of most affected areas, experiencing the strongest reduction of economic activities during the COVID-19 pandemic. Remote sensing-based tectonic geomorphology is widely applied to study neotectonic processes. This technique is relatively cheap and easy to apply, and it allows investigating large areas for tectonic activity. Existing literature comprises a variety of indices and techniques, seemingly able to work in almost all tectonic settings. In this paper we study a particularly challenging region in W Slovenia and NE Italy, characterised by slow deformation rates, high precipitation, dense vegetation, and intense modification of the landscape and drainage system due to karst processes. We apply a suite of well-established geomorphic indices including terrain ruggedness, surface roughness, hypsometric integral and analyses of drainage parameters, as well as several less commonly applied analyses, such as the assessment of doline density and doline geometry. The aim was to test the capabilities of the applied techniques at various spatial scales and to extract information about the active tectonics. We begin with broad, regional analyses to detect the morphological imprint of active faults in the landscape. Then, we perform detailed studies of selected sites and single faults. Finally, we analyse a polje located on the trace of an active fault in the highest detail. We then compare the different techniques and different digital elevation models regarding their usefulness for detecting tectonic influences on the karstic landscape. The results show that most of the well-established methods we tested are not suitable to detect even the largest, clearly active faults in the area. The resolution of the used DEMs also has a notable impact on the analyses. We conclude that it is almost impossible to identify active faults solely based on the used techniques. This is mainly due to the low deformation rates and to the intense karstification of the study area that leads to a disconnected surface drainage system. Additional problems arise from the strike-slip mechanism of active faulting. Lithological contrasts and inactive dip-slip faults can lead to false-positive signals of tectonic activity. However, some of our results also show a tectonic signal, indicating neotectonic strike-slip deformation with a notable dip-slip component. The Eco-Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS) is a voluntary Regulation that defines the European Environmental Management System (EMS). Today the EMAS is undergoing a revision process, in order to fit the scheme to organizations and stakeholders’ requirements and increase its diffusion. Italy accounts for roughly 1,000 of the 4,000 certified European organizations and, especially during the last five years, a growing number of organizations have not renewed the certification. Thus, the aim of the survey is to investigate why many Italian organizations have dropped out of EMAS, and to identify which enabling measures would be more effective in order to encourage organizations to move back to the certification. The target of the questionnaire were the 339 Italian organizations that did not renew their EMAS registration between 2010 and 2015, and respondents were 99. In the first part of the paper, we present the general findings, while in the second one, certified Public Administrations and private-owned organizations are compared in order to delineate significant differences between the two groups. Concerning motivations for not renewing EMAS, implementation costs were the key reasons for both groups. Conversely, considering the possible enabling measures, while private-owned organizations demand long term tax benefits, Public Administrations prefer a greater consideration of EMAS in public funding. This paper systematically addresses this phenomenon through a survey, contributing to reduce the existing gap in literature and providing a useful input to decision-makers who are overseeing the EMAS revision process. This paper describes the results of experimental tests and computer simulation modelling aimed at evaluating the performance of an electrochromic (EC) window with respect to solar radiation control and the relative impact on the energy consumption of buildings of the residential type for two typical Italian climates. The research is carried out by a test-cell equipped with a small area EC double glazing unit and by a simulation program of buildings’ energy behaviour in transient regime. The experimental results show that EC devices which modulate solar radiation mainly by absorption, like the one investigated in this paper, generate secondary solar heat gains which entails a 20% decrease of the maximum potential energy flux reduction. Also, this effect could rise the temperature of the internal glass pane of the glazing to levels for which risk of thermal discomfort for the occupants may occur. The computer simulation modelling involves a residential building unoccupied during a large fraction of daytime in weekdays. The savings potential of the investigated EC window are calculated relative to a conventional clear float double glazing unit. Results show that the EC glazing may lead to a considerable decrease of the cooling energy demand (and of the total building energy consumption) in cooling dominated climates. The energy saving benefits become less marked in heating dominated climates and, for low values of the window-to-wall ratio, can be overcame by the increase in lighting and heating energy requirements that results in an increase of the total building energy demand. Tourism is crucial to economic growth and has major environmental and social impacts. A key impact is the generation of municipal solid waste. Yet, whether and to what extent tourism increases the costs of solid waste collection has seen little attention. To our best knowledge, this is the first study to examine the impacts of tourism activities on the solid waste collection costs of different waste types. Analysing a sample of 68 Italian municipalities, we estimate the tourism's impacts on solid waste collection costs per waste type: organic, paper, multi-material (metal, plastic, glass), and residual undifferentiated. We find that the number of tourists, the number of overnight hotel stays, and tourists' spending significantly increase the collection costs of paper and paperboard, multi-material, and residual undifferentiated. Our findings suggest the need to distinguish between waste types in future investigations about the tourism as a cost driver. Estimates of light extinction and visibility are routinely performed by the U.S. Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments (IMPROVE) network using a simple algorithm which assesses light extinction coefficient (b ext ) at remote and rural sites from concentrations of major particulate matter (PM) species, NO 2 , and Rayleigh scattering from clear-air gaseous components. Following the same approach, in this paper an equation with tailored (i.e. site-specific) coefficients was implemented with the aim of reducing uncertainties and assumptions of the IMPROVE algorithm for applications at polluted urban sites. Major differences compared to IMPROVE algorithm are: 1) dry mass extinction efficiencies calculated using a discrete dipole approximation code with aerosol size distributions measured at our monitoring site as input data; 2) site-specific water growth functions computed separately for ammonium sulfate, ammonium nitrate, and organic matter; 3) fine soil evaluated using an equation previously adopted at our urban site; 4) aerosol absorption component assessed directly through filter-based optical measurements. Details about the calculations performed are reported in the paper and the comparison with the IMPROVE revised algorithm is discussed. The tailored approach here proposed to estimate reconstructed light extinction was applied to PM 2.5 test samples collected on purpose in Milan (Italy), where heavy pollution episodes occur during winter periods. In addition, visual range was calculated applying the Koschmieder equation and compared to visibility measured at the nearby Milano-Linate airport obtaining a fairly good correlation. Energy efficiency is one of the main pillars of the European energy strategy and it involves all the economic sectors. The present study proposes an analysis of the energy saving opportunities available in the Italian hotel sector, which has a relevant importance in the national context. The paper introduces a comprehensive model of the Italian hotel sector developed in the LEAP (Long-range Energy Alternatives Planning) environment. The first aim is to estimate the baseline of the consumption, then to evaluate the maximum potential energy saving and, finally, to assess the implementation of a realistic energy efficiency scenario. The paper demonstrates that it may be possible to achieve primary energy savings of 1.6 TWh (13%) in 2030 by implementing financially sustainable energy efficiency measures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present paper illustrates the Italian pilot action of the EASEE project (Envelope Approach to improve Sustainability and Energy Efficiency in existing multi-storey multi owner residential buildings), focusing on the analysis of energy refurbishment trends of the Lombardy region residential building stock. More than 60% of the existing building stock in Lombardy region has been built before the 70 s and it is among the main responsible causes of final energy absorption and corresponding CO 2 emissions with a mean primary energy index for heating of about 202.0 kWh/m 2 y. The promotion of renovation measures for such buildings, also through innovative solutions, is becoming increasingly important for both containing the greenhouse gas emissions and supporting the growth of the construction sector. To this topic, the work presents the energy renovation of a residential building in the Province of Milan through the application of innovative prefabricated composite panels that integrate both thermal insulation and exterior finishing with textile reinforced mortar. In detail, the paper describes, on one hand, the main design strategies following the preliminary analysis and, on the other hand, the whole installation process; besides, the performance of the retrofitted envelope is documented by the results of the monitoring campaign. The circular economy is a social, technological and economic paradigm that aims to build a production and consumption model focused on waste reduction and maximization of discarded matter recovery. Discussion of the circular economy often treats it as a technocratic and profit-driven phenomenon that can be developed by capital investment in a particular industrial sector without necessarily taking into account the needs of the surrounding geographic area. The promotion of the circular economy often emphasises recycling and other practices that may not fully use the recovered material but are highly automatable, thus creating only a limited number of jobs. At the same time, there is another model of the circular economy, in which small and medium-sized organizations engage in transformative and low-technology activities such as reuse and repair, benefiting local development and creating job opportunities. This model is often explicitly driven by a social development mandate. Still, it risks falling short of its goals because of a lack of expertise and a less systematic approach. This paper aims to introduce the Design-led Repair & Reuse (DLRR) framework for mitigating the shortcomings of this second model, using an approach that is both sustainable and accessible to organizations with limited resources. Inspired by the principles of "Design-driven innovation", "social & solidarity economy", and "appropriate technology", DLRR aims to generate a higher quality of processes and products from circular, low entropy and low capital-intensity production activities, resulting in a more solid, identifiable and conscious positioning in the reuse market. It complements the socially inclusive ethos of these third sector small and medium-sized organizations while contributing to the debate on integrating alternative perspectives into the mainstream circular economy discourse. The first part of this paper discusses the theoretical principles that have inspired the DLRR framework. The COVID-19 outbreak is deeply influencing the global social and economic framework, due to restrictive measures adopted worldwide by governments to counteract the pandemic contagion. In multi-region areas such as Italy, where the contagion peak has been reached, it is crucial to find targeted and coordinated optimal exit and restarting strategies on a regional basis to effectively cope with possible onset of further epidemic waves, while efficiently returning the economic activities to their standard level of intensity. Differently from the related literature, where modeling and controlling the pandemic contagion is typically addressed on a national basis, this paper proposes an optimal control approach that supports governments in defining the most effective strategies to be adopted during post-lockdown mitigation phases in a multi-region scenario. Based on the joint use of a non-linear Model Predictive Control scheme and a modified Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR)-based epidemiological model, the approach is aimed at minimizing the cost of the so-called non-pharmaceutical interventions (that is, mitigation strategies), while ensuring that the capacity of the network of regional healthcare systems is not violated. In addition, the proposed approach supports policy makers in taking targeted intervention decisions on different regions by an integrated and structured model, thus both respecting the specific regional health systems characteristics and improving the system-wide performance by avoiding uncoordinated actions of the regions. The methodology is tested on the COVID-19 outbreak data related to the network of Italian regions, showing its effectiveness in properly supporting the definition of effective regional strategies for managing the COVID-19 diffusion. The present work focuses on the tectonic characterization of the southeastern portion of the Hyblean Plateau (SE-Sicily, Italy). Along the southeastern margin of this raised crustal block, a clear recent antiformal deformation, coupled with diffuse landscape rejuvenation, affects the summit surface. Many studies, using merely qualitative geomorphological approach, refer the recent morphotectonic evolution of this region to motion along an active border fault, located at the base of the well-developed, arc-shaped Avola mountain front. This paper provides new insights resulting from the morphometric analysis across the Avola region, in order to detail on the relationships between the landscape geomorphic unsteadiness and the long-term tectonic deformation. We perform both drainage system and relief investigations, consisting of the exploration of different geomorphic indices (e.g. hypsometric integral, topographic relief and dissection, SL index, k sn), long-profile analysis, marine terraces age model definition, field-based geomorphological and structural surveys. The results and the spatial distribution of morphometric indexes evidence the occurrence of two incipient NNE trending en-échelon fault segments, here named Cassibile-Noto Fault, responsible for the relief building along the southeastern border of the Hyblean Plateau. The northern fault segment directly controls the northern portion of the Avola mountain front, whereas the southern segment diverges from the main scarp, cutting through the low-standing areas of the coastal plain. In addition, the centrifugal arrangement of fluvial captures and the half-elliptical envelope of the downstream projections of coeval paleo-long profiles, as well as the distribution of Pleistocene marine terraces, well evidence the long-term WNW-ESE-trending low-amplitude bow-shaped deformation affecting the footwall of the Cassibile-Noto normal fault. We relate this convex-upward trend to the Late Pleistocene (<125 ka) tectonic deformation cumulated, at rate of ~0.80 ± 0.05 mm/a, along the active fault. This incipient tectonic structure represents an extensional tectonic boundary that accommodates, together with the Ispica Fault, the active NW-ward motion of the entire eastern sector of the Hyblean Plateau. Overall, the proposed updating of the tectonic setting of the study area, framed in the regional geodynamic picture of the eastern Sicily, would contribute to define a more suitable geological risk assessment of the region. • We perform morphometric analyses along the SE margin of the Hyblean Plateau. • We document the landscape response to recent tectonic deformation. • We carry out our geomorphic investigation by both fluvial network and relief analyses. • The presented study enables to update the general tectonic setting of the region. Italy is among the major producers of dimension stones and a world leader in terms of technologies for stone quarrying, cutting and finishing. In the current context of European Environmental and Raw Material policies, the stone sector is expected to enhance its overall sustainability and circularity. Previous studies have used Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to evaluate the environmental performance of stone production, along the supply chain. Nevertheless, despite the fairly high level of maturity in terms of methodology, previous LCA studies have highlighted the scarce availability of Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) datasets related to stone sector technologies, which inevitably required the introduction of heavy simplifications. The present paper contributes to fill these gaps by providing detailed LCI datasets of the most common technologies and tools for stone quarrying, cutting and finishing. Datasets have been developed on the basis of primary data provided by three major Italian producers of cutting tools, complemented with secondary data from literature, where necessary. Moreover, modelling parameters have been set to enable the datasets update or their adaptation to specific production chains of the stone or other sectors.
