Allowing members of the crowd to propose novel microtasks for one another is an effective way to combine the efficiencies of traditional microtask work with the inventiveness and hypothesis generation potential of human workers. However, microtask proposal leads to a growing set of tasks that may overwhelm limited crowdsourcer resources. Crowdsourcers can employ methods to utilize their resources efficiently, but algorithmic approaches to efficient crowdsourcing generally require a fixed task set of known size. In this paper, we introduce cost forecasting as a means for a crowdsourcer to use efficient crowdsourcing algorithms with a growing set of microtasks. Cost forecasting allows the crowdsourcer to decide between eliciting new tasks from the crowd or receiving responses to existing tasks based on whether or not new tasks will cost less to complete than existing tasks, efficiently balancing resources as crowdsourcing occurs. Experiments with real and synthetic crowdsourcing data show that cost forecasting leads to improved accuracy. Accuracy and efficiency gains for crowd-generated microtasks hold the promise to further leverage the creativity and wisdom of the crowd, with applications such as generating more informative and diverse training data for machine learning applications and improving the performance of user-generated content and question-answering platforms., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

With the advent of the era of artificial intelligence, text detection is widely used in the real world. In text detection, due to the limitation of the receptive field of the neural network, most existing scene text detection methods cannot accurately detect small target text instances in any direction, and the detection rate of mutually adhering text instances is low, which is prone to false detection. To tackle such difficulties, in this paper, we propose a new feature pyramid network for scene text detection, Cross-Scale Attention Aggregation Feature Pyramid Network (CSAA-FPN). Specifically, we use a Attention Aggregation Feature Module (AAFM) to enhance features, which not only solves the problem of weak features and small receptive fields extracted by lightweight networks but also better handles multi-scale information and accurately separate adjacent text instances. An attention module CBAM is introduced to focus on effective information so that the output feature layer has richer and more accurate information. Furthermore, we design an Adaptive Fusion Module (AFM), which weights the output features and pays attention to the pixel information to further refine the features. At present, there are some problems in underwater low light image, such as low contrast, blurred details, color distortion. In the process of low illumination image enhancement, there are often problems such as artifacts, loss of edge details and noise amplification in the enhanced image. In this paper, we propose an underwater low-light enhancement algorithm based on U-shaped generative adversarial network, combined with bright channel prior and attention mechanism, to address the problems. For the problems of uneven edges and loss of details that occurred in traditional enhanced images, we propose a two-channel fusion technique for the input channel. Aiming at the problems of brightness, texture and color distortion in enhanced images, we propose a feature extraction technique based on the attention mechanism. For the problems of noise in enhanced output images, we propose a multi-loss function to constrain the network. The method has a wide range of applications in underwater scenes with large depth. This method can be used for target detection or biological species identification in underwater low light environment. Through the enhancement experiment of underwater low light image, the proposed method effectively solves the problems of low contrast, blurred details, color distortion, etc. of underwater low light image. Finally, we performed extensive comparison experiments and completed ablation experiments on the proposed method. Most of the existing graph embedding methods are used to describe the single view network and solve the single relation in the network. However, the real world is made up of networks with multiple views of complex relationships, and the existing methods can no longer meet the needs of people. To solve this problem, we propose a novel multi-view attention network inspired by coupled P system(MVAN-CP) to deal with node classification. More specifically, we design a multi-view attention network to extract abundant information from multiple views in the network and obtain a learning representation for each view. To enable the views to collaborate, we further apply attention mechanism to facilitate the view fusion process. Taking advantage of the maximum parallelism of P system, the process of learning and fusion will be realized in the coupled P system, which greatly improves the computational efficiency. High prediction accuracies are not the only objective to consider when solving problems using machine learning. Instead, particular scientific applications require some explanation of the learned prediction function. For computational biology, positional oligomer importance matrices (POIMs) have been successfully applied to explain the decision of support vector machines (SVMs) using weighted-degree (WD) kernels. To extract relevant biological motifs from POIMs, the motifPOIM method has been devised and showed promising results on real-world data. Our contribution in this paper is twofold: as an extension to POIMs, we propose gPOIM, a general measure of feature importance for arbitrary learning machines and feature sets (including, but not limited to, SVMs and CNNs) and devise a sampling strategy for efficient computation. As a second contribution, we derive a convex formulation of motifPOIMs that leads to more reliable motif extraction from gPOIMs. Empirical evaluations confirm the usefulness of our approach on artificially generated data as well as on real-world datasets. Recently, various ensemble learning methods with different base classifiers have been proposed for credit scoring problems. However, for various reasons, there has been little research using logistic regression as the base classifier. In this paper, given large unbalanced data, we consider the plausibility of ensemble learning using regularized logistic regression as the base classifier to deal with credit scoring problems. In this research, the data is first balanced and diversified by clustering and bagging algorithms. Then we apply a Lasso-logistic regression learning ensemble to evaluate the credit risks. We show that the proposed algorithm outperforms popular credit scoring models such as decision tree, Lasso-logistic regression and random forests in terms of AUC and F-measure. The main purpose of this study is to propose, then analyze, and later test a spectral gradient algorithm for solving a convex minimization problem. The considered problem covers the matrix ℓ2,1-norm regularized least squares which is widely used in multi-task learning for capturing the joint feature among each task. To solve the problem, we firstly minimize a quadratic approximated model of the objective function to derive a search direction at current iteration. We show that this direction descends automatically and reduces to the original spectral gradient direction if the regularized term is removed. Secondly, we incorporate a nonmonotone line search along this direction to improve the algorithm’s numerical performance. Furthermore, we show that the proposed algorithm converges to a critical point under some mild conditions. The attractive feature of the proposed algorithm is that it is easily performable and only requires the gradient of the smooth function and the objective function’s values at each and every step. Optical Music Recognition (OMR) has received increasing attention in recent years. In this paper, we propose a classifier based on a new method named Directed Acyclic Graph-Large margin Distribution Machine (DAG-LDM). The DAG-LDM is an improvement of the Large margin Distribution Machine (LDM), which is a binary classifier that optimizes the margin distribution by maximizing the margin mean and minimizing the margin variance simultaneously. We modify the LDM to the DAG-LDM to solve the multi-class music symbol classification problem. Tests are conducted on more than 10000 music symbol images, obtained from handwritten and printed images of music scores. The proposed method provides superior classification capability and achieves much higher classification accuracy than the state-of-the-art algorithms such as Support Vector Machines (SVMs) and Neural Networks (NNs). Software defect prediction (SDP) can be used to produce reliable, high-quality software. The current SDP is practiced on program granular components (such as file level, class level, or function level), which cannot accurately predict failures. To solve this problem, we propose a new framework called DP-AGL, which uses attention-based GRU-LSTM for statement-level defect prediction. By using clang to build an abstract syntax tree (AST), we define a set of 32 statement-level metrics. We label each statement, then make a three-dimensional vector and apply it as an automatic learning model, and then use a gated recurrent unit (GRU) with a long short-term memory (LSTM). In addition, the Attention mechanism is used to generate important features and improve accuracy. To verify our experiments, we selected 119,989 C/C++ programs in Code4Bench. The benchmark tests cover various programs and variant sets written by thousands of programmers. As an evaluation standard, compared with the state evaluation method, the recall, precision, accuracy and F1 measurement of our well-trained DP-AGL under normal conditions have increased by 1%, 4%, 5%, and 2% respectively. Throughout recent times, cybersecurity problems have occurred in various business applications. Although previous researchers proposed to cope with the occurrence of cybersecurity issues, their methods repeatedly replicated the training processes for several times to classify datasets of these problems in streaming non-stationary environments. In dynamic environments, the conventional methods possibly deteriorate the adaptive solution to prevent these issues. This research proposes a one-pass-throw-away learning using the dynamical structure of the network to solve these problems in dynamic environments. Furthermore, to speed up the computational time and to maintain a minimum space complexity for streaming data, the new concepts of learning in forms of recursive functions were introduced. The information gain-based feature selection was also applied to reduce the learning time during the training process. The experimental results signified that the proposed algorithm outperformed the others in incremental-like and online ensemble learning algorithms in terms of classification accuracy, space complexity, and computational time. Modern authorship attribution methods are often comprised of powerful yet opaque machine learning algorithms. While much of this work lends itself to concrete outcomes in the form of probability scores, advanced approaches typically preclude deeper insights in the form of psychological interpretation. Additionally, few attribution methods exist for single-candidate authorship problems, most of which require large amounts of supplemental data to perform and none of which rely upon explicitly psychological measures. The current study introduces Mental Profile Mapping, a new authorship attribution technique for single-candidate authorship questions that is founded on previous scientific research pertaining to the nature of language and psychology. In the current study, baseline expectations for results and performance are set using an advanced technique known as “unmasking” on the test case of Aphra Behn, a 17th century English playwright. Following this, Mental Profile Mapping is introduced and tested for its psychometric properties, tested using a “bogus insertion” method, and then applied to canonical Aphra Behn plays. Results from both attribution methods suggest that 2 of 5 questioned plays are likely to have been authored by Behn, with the remaining 3 plays exhibiting a poor fit for Behn’s psychological fingerprint. Discriminating between black and white spruce (Picea mariana and Picea glauca) is a difficult palynological classification problem that, if solved, would provide valuable data for paleoclimate reconstructions. We developed an open-source visual recognition software (ARLO, Automated Recognition with Layered Optimization) capable of differentiating between these two species at an accuracy on par with human experts. The system applies pattern recognition and machine learning to the analysis of pollen images and discovers general-purpose image features, defined by simple features of lines and grids of pixels taken at different dimensions, size, spacing, and resolution. It adapts to a given problem by searching for the most effective combination of both feature representation and learning strategy. This results in a powerful and flexible framework for image classification. We worked with images acquired using an automated slide scanner. We first applied a hash-based “pollen spotting” model to segment pollen grains from the slide background. We next tested ARLO’s ability to reconstruct black to white spruce pollen ratios using artificially constructed slides of known ratios. We then developed a more scalable hash-based method of image analysis that was able to distinguish between the pollen of black and white spruce with an estimated accuracy of 83.61%, comparable to human expert performance. Our results demonstrate the capability of machine learning systems to automate challenging taxonomic classifications in pollen analysis, and our success with simple image representations suggests that our approach is generalizable to many other object recognition problems. Background: The problems of correlation and classification are long-standing in the fields of statistics and machine learning, and techniques have been developed to address these problems. We are now in the era of high-dimensional data, which is data that can concern billions of variables. These data present new challenges. In particular, it is difficult to discover predictive variables, when each variable has little marginal effect. An example concerns Genome-wide Association Studies (GWAS) datasets, which involve millions of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNPs), where some of the SNPs interact epistatically to affect disease status. Towards determining these interacting SNPs, researchers developed techniques that addressed this specific problem. However, the problem is more general, and so these techniques are applicable to other problems concerning interactions. A difficulty with many of these techniques is that they do not distinguish whether a learned interaction is actually an interaction or whether it involves several variables with strong marginal effects. Methodology/Findings: We address this problem using information gain and Bayesian network scoring. First, we identify candidate interactions by determining whether together variables provide more information than they do separately. Then we use Bayesian network scoring to see if a candidate interaction really is a likely model. Our strategy is called MBS-IGain. Using 100 simulated datasets and a real GWAS Alzheimer’s dataset, we investigated the performance of MBS-IGain. Conclusions/Significance: When analyzing the simulated datasets, MBS-IGain substantially out-performed nine previous methods at locating interacting predictors, and at identifying interactions exactly. When analyzing the real Alzheimer’s dataset, we obtained new results and results that substantiated previous findings. We conclude that MBS-IGain is highly effective at finding interactions in high-dimensional datasets. This result is significant because we have increasingly abundant high-dimensional data in many domains, and to learn causes and perform prediction/classification using these data, we often must first identify interactions.
