Objectives: To develop and evaluate methods for assembling radiopaque printed paper sheets to realistic patient phantoms for CT dose and image quality testing.Methods: CT images of two patients were radiopaque printed with aqueous potassium iodide solution (0.6 g/ml) on paper. Two methods were developed for assembling the paper sheets to head and neck phantoms. (1) Printed sheets were fed to a paper-based 3D printer along with corresponding 3D printable STL files. (2) Paper stacks of 5-mm thickness were glued with toner, cut to the patient shape and assembled to a phantom. In a sample application study, both phantoms were examined with five different tube current settings. Images were reconstructed using filtered-back projection (FBP) and iterative reconstruction (AIDR 3D) with three strength levels. Dose length product (DLP), signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) and contrast-to-noise ratios (CNRs) were analysed. Data were analysed using 2-way analysis of variance (ANOVA).Results: Both methods achieved anthropomorphic phantoms with detailed patient anatomy. The 3D printer yielded a precise reproduction of the external patient shape, but caused visible glue artefacts. Gluing with toner avoided these artefacts and yielded more flexibility with regard to phantom size. In the sample application study, non-inferior SNR and CNR and up to 83.7% lower DLP were achieved on the phantoms with AIDR 3D compared with FBP.Conclusions: Two methods for assembling radiopaque printed paper sheets to phantoms of individual patients are presented. Since 2000, there have been more than 8000 publications on radiology artificial intelligence (AI). AI breakthroughs allow complex tasks to be automated and even performed beyond human capabilities. However, the lack of details on the methods and algorithm code undercuts its scientific value. Many science subfields have recently faced a reproducibility crisis, eroding trust in processes and results, and influencing the rise in retractions of scientific papers. For the same reasons, conducting research in deep learning (DL) also requires reproducibility. Although several valuable manuscript checklists for AI in medical imaging exist, they are not focused specifically on reproducibility. In this study, we conducted a systematic review of recently published papers in the field of DL to evaluate if the description of their methodology could allow the reproducibility of their findings. We focused on the Journal of Digital Imaging (JDI), a specialized journal that publishes papers on AI and medical imaging. We used the keyword "Deep Learning" and collected the articles published between January 2020 and January 2022. We screened all the articles and included the ones which reported the development of a DL tool in medical imaging. We extracted the reported details about the dataset, data handling steps, data splitting, model details, and performance metrics of each included article. We found 148 articles. Eighty were included after screening for articles that reported developing a DL model for medical image analysis. Five studies have made their code publicly available, and 35 studies have utilized publicly available datasets. We provided figures to show the ratio and absolute count of reported items from included studies. According to our cross-sectional study, in JDI publications on DL in medical imaging, authors infrequently report the key elements of their study to make it reproducible. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Breast cancer (BC) is the leading cause of death among women worldwide. It affects in general women older than 40 years old. Medical images analysis is one of the most promising research areas since it provides facilities for diagnosis and decision-making of several diseases such as BC. This paper conducts a Structured Literature Review (SLR) of the use of Machine Learning (ML) and Image Processing (IP) techniques to deal with BC imaging. A set of 530 papers published between 2000 and August 2019 were selected and analyzed according to ten criteria: year and publication channel, empirical type, research type, medical task, machine learning techniques, datasets used, validation methods, performance measures and image processing techniques which include image pre-processing, segmentation, feature extraction and feature selection. Results showed that diagnosis was the most used medical task and that Deep Learning techniques (DL) were largely used to perform classification. Furthermore, we found out that classification was the most ML objective investigated followed by prediction and clustering. Most of the selected studies used Mammograms as imaging modalities rather than Ultrasound or Magnetic Resonance Imaging with the use of public or private datasets with MIAS as the most frequently investigated public dataset. As for image processing techniques, the majority of the selected studies pre-process their input images by reducing the noise and normalizing the colors, and some of them use segmentation to extract the region of interest with the thresholding method. For feature extraction, we note that researchers extracted the relevant features using classical feature extraction techniques (e.g. Texture features, Shape features, etc.) or DL techniques (e. g. The external and middle ear conditions are diagnosed using a digital otoscope. The clinical diagnosis of ear conditions is suffered from restricted accuracy due to the increased dependency on otolaryngologist expertise, patient complaint, blurring of the otoscopic images, and complexity of lesions definition. There is a high requirement for improved diagnosis algorithms based on otoscopic image processing. This paper presented an ear diagnosis approach based on a convolutional neural network (CNN) as feature extraction and long short-term memory (LSTM) as a classifier algorithm. However, the suggested LSTM model accuracy may be decreased by the omission of a hyperparameter tuning process. Therefore, Bayesian optimization is used for selecting the hyperparameters to improve the results of the LSTM network to obtain a good classification. This study is based on an ear imagery database that consists of four categories: normal, myringosclerosis, earwax plug, and chronic otitis media (COM). This study used 880 otoscopic images divided into 792 training images and 88 testing images to evaluate the approach performance. In this paper, the evaluation metrics of ear condition classification are based on a percentage of accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and positive predictive value (PPV). The findings yielded a classification accuracy of 100%, a sensitivity of 100%, a specificity of 100%, and a PPV of 100% for the testing database. Finally, the proposed approach shows how to find the best hyperparameters concerning the Bayesian optimization for reliable diagnosis of ear conditions under the consideration of LSTM architecture. This approach demonstrates that CNN-LSTM has higher performance and lower training time than CNN, which has not been used in previous studies for classifying ear diseases. Research in computer analysis of medical images bears many promises to improve patients' health. However, a number of systematic challenges are slowing down the progress of the field, from limitations of the data, such as biases, to research incentives, such as optimizing for publication. In this paper we review roadblocks to developing and assessing methods. Building our analysis on evidence from the literature and data challenges, we show that at every step, potential biases can creep in. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is one of the most serious neurological diseases. It is the most frequent reason of non-traumatic disability among young adults. MS is an autoimmune disease wherein the central nervous system wrongly destructs the myelin sheath surrounding and protecting axons of nerve cells of the brain and the spinal cord which results in presence of lesions called plaques. The damage of myelin sheath alters the normal transmission of nerve flow at the plaques level, consequently, a loss of communication between the brain and other organs. The consequence of this poor transmission of nerve impulses is the occurrence of various neurological symptoms. MS lesions cause mobility, vision, cognitive, and memory disorders. Indeed, early detection of lesions provides an accurate MS diagnosis. Consequently, and with the adequate treatment, clinicians will be able to deal effectively with the disease and reduce the number of relapses. Therefore, the use of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is primordial which is proven as the relevant imaging tool for early diagnosis of MS patients. But, low contrast MRI images can hide important objects in the image such lesions. In this paper, we propose a new automated contrast enhancement (CE) method to ameliorate the low contrast of MRI images for a better enhancement of MS lesions. This step is very important as it helps radiologists in confirming their diagnosis. The developed algorithm called BDS is based on Brightness Preserving Dynamic Fuzzy Histogram Equalization (BPDFHE) and Singular Value Decomposition with Discrete Wavelet Transform (SVD-DWT) techniques. BDS is dedicated to improve the low quality of MRI images with preservation of the brightness level and the edge details from degradation and without added artifacts or noise. These features are essential in CE approaches for a better lesion recognition. A modified version of BDS called MBDS is also implemented in the second part of this paper wherein we have proposed a new method for computing the correction factor. Indeed, with the use of the new correction factor, the entropy has been increased and the contrast is greatly enhanced. MBDS is specially dedicated for very low contrast MRI images. The experimental results proved the effectiveness of developed methods in improving low contrast of MRI images with preservation of brightness level and edge information. Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) is an effective way to reduce radiation exposure for patients. However, it will increase the noise of reconstructed CT images and affect the precision of clinical diagnosis. The majority of the current deep learning-based denoising methods are built on convolutional neural networks (CNNs), which concentrate on local information and have little capacity for multiple structures modeling. Transformer structures are capable of computing each pixel's response on a global scale, but their extensive computation requirements prevent them from being widely used in medical image processing. To reduce the impact of LDCT scans on patients, this paper aims to develop an image post-processing method by combining CNN and Transformer structures. This method can obtain a high-quality images from LDCT. A hybrid CNN-Transformer (HCformer) codec network model is proposed for LDCT image denoising. A neighborhood feature enhancement (NEF) module is designed to introduce the local information into the Transformer's operation, and the representation of adjacent pixel information in the LDCT image denoising task is increased. The shifting window method is utilized to lower the computational complexity of the network model and overcome the problems that come with computing the MSA (Multi-head self-attention) process in a fixed window. Meanwhile, W/SW-MSA (Windows/Shifted window Multi-head self-attention) is alternately used in two layers of the Transformer to gain the information interaction between various Transformer layers. This approach can successfully decrease the Transformer's overall computational cost. The AAPM 2016 LDCT grand challenge dataset is employed for ablation and comparison experiments to demonstrate the viability of the proposed LDCT denoising method. Per the experimental findings, HCformer can increase the image quality metrics SSIM, HuRMSE and FSIM from 0.8017, 34.1898, and 0.6885 to 0.8507, 17.7213, and 0.7247, respectively. Additionally, the proposed HCformer algorithm will preserves image details while it reduces noise. In this paper, an HCformer structure is proposed based on deep learning and evaluated by using the AAPM LDCT dataset. Both the qualitative and quantitative comparison results confirm that the proposed HCformer outperforms other methods. The contribution of each component of the HCformer is also confirmed by the ablation experiments. Tuberculosis (TB) remains a global health problem and is the second leading cause of death from a single infectious agent, behind the novel coronavirus disease of 2019. Children are amongst the most vulnerable groups affected by TB, and imaging manifestations are different in children when compared to adults. TB primarily involves the lungs and mediastinal lymph nodes. Clinical history, physical examination, laboratory examinations and various medical imaging tools are combined to establish the diagnosis. Even though chest radiography is the accepted initial radiological imaging modality for the evaluation of children with TB, this paper, the first of two parts, aims to discuss the advantages and limitations of the various medical imaging modalities and to provide recommendations on which is most appropriate for the initial diagnosis and assessment of possible complications of pulmonary TB in children. Grand challenges have become the de facto standard for benchmarking image analysis algorithms. While the number of these international competitions is steadily increasing, surprisingly little effort has been invested in ensuring high quality design, execution and reporting for these international competitions. Specifically, results analysis and visualization in the event of uncertainties have been given almost no attention in the literature. Given these shortcomings, the contribution of this paper is two-fold: (1) we present a set of methods to comprehensively analyze and visualize the results of single-task and multi-task challenges and apply them to a number of simulated and real-life challenges to demonstrate their specific strengths and weaknesses; (2) we release the open-source framework challengeR as part of this work to enable fast and wide adoption of the methodology proposed in this paper. Our approach offers an intuitive way to gain important insights into the relative and absolute performance of algorithms, which cannot be revealed by commonly applied visualization techniques. This is demonstrated by the experiments performed in the specific context of biomedical image analysis challenges. Medical imaging has acquired more attention due to the emerging design of wireless technologies, the internet, and data storage. The reflection of these technologies has gained attraction in medicine and medical sciences facilitating the diagnosis and treatment of different diseases in an effective manner. However, medical images are vulnerable to noise, which can make the image unclear and perplex the identification. Thus, denoising of medical images is imperative for processing medical images. This paper devises a novel optimal deep convolution neural network–based vectorial variation (ODVV) filter for denoising medical computed tomography (CT) images and Lena images. Here, the input medical images are fed to a noisy pixel map identification module wherein the deep convolutional neural network (Deep CNN) is adapted for discovering noisy pixel maps. Here, Deep CNN training is done with the Adam algorithm. Once noisy pixels are identified, it is further given to noise removal module which is performed using the proposed optimization algorithm, namely Feedback Artificial Lion (FAL). Here, the FAL is devised by combining the FAT and Lion algorithm. After noise removal, the pixel enhancement is performed using the vectorial total variation norm to get final pixel-enhanced image. The proposed FAL algorithm offered enhanced performance in contrast to other techniques with the highest peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of 24.149 dB, highest second-derivative-like measure of enhancement (SDME) of 32.142 dB, highest structural index similarity (SSIM) of 0.800, and Edge Preserve Index (EPI) of 0.9267. Accurate registration of lung X-rays is an important task in medical image analysis. However, the conventional methods usually cost a lot in running time, and the existing deep learning methods are hard to deal with the large deformation caused by respiratory and cardiac motion. In this paper, we attempt to use deep learning methods to deal with large deformation and enable it to achieve the accuracy of conventional methods. We proposed the cascading affine and B-spline network (CABN), which consists of convolutional cross-stitch affine block (CCAB) and B-splines U-net-like block (BUB) for large lung motion. CCAB makes use of the convolutional cross-stitch model to learn global features among images. And BUB adopts the idea of cubic B-splines which is suitable for large deformation. We separately demonstrated CCAB, BUB, and CABN on two chest X-ray datasets. The experimental results indicate that our methods are highly competitive both in accuracy and runtime when compared to both other deep learning methods and iterative conventional approaches. The early stage lung cancer often appears as ground-glass nodules (GGNs). The diagnosis of GGN as preinvasive lesion (PIL) or invasive adenocarcinoma (IA) is very important for further treatment planning. This paper proposes an automatic GGNs' invasiveness classification algorithm for the adenocarcinoma. 1431 clinical cases and a total of 1624 GGNs (3–30 mm) were collected from Shanghai Cancer Center for the study. The data is in high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) format. Firstly, the automatic GGN detector which is composed by a 3D U-Net and a 3D multi-receptive field (multi-RF) network detects the location of GGNs. Then, a deep 3D convolutional neural network (3D-CNN) called Attention-v1 is used to identify the GGNs' invasiveness. The attention mechanism was introduced to the 3D-CNN. This paper conducted a contract experiment to compare the performance of Attention-v1, ResNet, and random forest algorithm. ResNet is one of the most advanced convolutional neural network structures. The competition performance metrics (CPM) of automatic GGN detector reached 0.896. The accuracy, sensitivity, specificity, and area under curve (AUC) value of Attention-v1 structure are 85.2%, 83.7%, 86.3%, and 92.6%. The algorithm proposed in this paper outperforms ResNet and random forest in sensitivity, accuracy, and AUC value. The deep 3D-CNN's classification result is better than traditional machine learning method. Attention mechanism improves 3D-CNN's performance compared with the residual block. The automatic GGN detector with the addition of Attention-v1 can be used to construct the GGN invasiveness classification algorithm to help the patients and doctors in treatment. The continuous orthogonal moments of images have become a main tool used in zero-watermarking algorithms in recent years. However, there is a problem that should not be neglected for existing zero-watermarking algorithms, which is known as numerical instability. Because the continuous orthogonal moments used in existing zero-watermarking algorithms are integer-order moments, this problem affects the computational accuracy of such moments and thus affects the performance of zero-watermarking algorithms. Therefore, in this paper, the integer-order radial harmonic Fourier moments (IoRHFMs) are firstly extended to fractional-order radial harmonic Fourier moments (FoRHFMs) to effectively mitigate the problem of numerical instability and improve the computational accuracy of IoRHFMs, and then a FoRHFM-based zero-watermarking algorithm for medical images is proposed to achieve lossless copyright protection of medical images. The experimental results show that this algorithm is highly robust to geometric attacks and common attacks, and is superior to IoRHFM-based and other zero-watermarking algorithms. Medical image segmentation can effectively overcome human perception with strong personal limitations. The superpixel/voxel segmentation method has strong adaptability and computational efficiency. It can effectively separate the diseased tissue from normal cells or bone and muscle, which is widely used. This paper proposes a superpixel/voxel medical image segmentation algorithm based on regional interlinked value and block (region) merging, which can segment the two-dimensional bone image and three-dimensional brain image. By computing the regional interlinked value, the proposed method can overcome the problem of the initial setting block size in the traditional superpixel/voxel segmentation method. Next, the blocks with the same features are merged. To segment the superpixel/voxel medical image, the final distance with the intensity feature, the location feature, and the gradient feature is considered. Modern medical examinations have produced a large number of medical images. It is a great challenge to transmit and store them quickly and securely. Existing solutions mainly use medical image encryption algorithms, but these encryption algorithms, which were developed for ordinary images, are time-consuming and must cope with insufficient security considerations when encrypting medical images. Compared with ordinary images, medical images can be divided into the region of interest and the region of background. In this paper, based on this characteristic, a plain-image correlative semi-selective medical image encryption algorithm using the enhanced two dimensional Logistic map was proposed. First, the region of interest of a plain medical image is permuted at the pixel level, then for the whole medical image, substitution is performed pixel by pixel. An ideal compromise between encryption speed and security can be achieved by full-encrypting the region of interest and semi-encrypting the region of background. Several main types of medical images and some normal images were selected as the samples for simulation, and main image cryptanalysis methods were used to analyze the results. The results showed that the cipher-images have a good visual quality, high information entropy, low correlation between adjacent pixels, as well as uniformly distribute histogram. The algorithm is sensitive to the initial key and plain-image, and has a large keyspace and low time complexity. The time complexity is lower when compared with the current medical image full encryption algorithm, and the security performance is better when compared with the current medical image selective encryption algorithm. It is more than a decade since machine learning and especially its leading subtype deep learning have become one of the most interesting topics in almost all areas of science and industry. In numerous contexts, at least one of the applications of deep learning is utilized or is going to be utilized. Using deep learning for image classification is now very popular and widely used in various use cases. Many types of research in medical sciences have been focused on the advantages of deep learning for image classification problems. Some recent researches show more than 90% accuracy for breast tissue classification which is a breakthrough. A huge number of computations in deep neural networks are considered a big challenge both from software and hardware point of view. From the architectural perspective, this big amount of computing operations will result in high power consumption and computation runtime. This led to the emersion of deep learning accelerators which are designed mainly for improving performance and energy efficiency. Data reuse and localization are two great opportunities for achieving energy-efficient computations with lower runtime. Data flows are mainly designed based on these important parameters. In this paper, DLA-H and BJS, a deep learning accelerator, and its data flow for histopathologic image classification are proposed. The simulation results with the MAESTRO tool showed 756 cycles for total runtime and 3.21 × 10 6 GFLOPS roofline throughput that is an extreme performance improvement in comparison to current general-purpose deep learning accelerators and data flows. Spleen tissue segmentation is an essential process for analyzing various immunological diseases as observed in the cryo-imaging data. Because manual labeling of the spleen tissue by human experts is not efficient, an automatic segmentation algorithm is needed. In this study, we developed a novel algorithm for automatically segmenting spleen substructures including white pulp and red pulp for the first time. The algorithm is designed for datasets created by a cryo-imaging system. This unique technology can effectively enable cellular tracking anywhere in the whole mouse with single-cell sensitivity. The proposed algorithm consists of four components: initial spleen mask creation, feature extraction, Supervised Patch-based Fuzzy c-Mean (spFCM) classification, and post-processing. The algorithm accurately and efficiently labeled spleen tissues in all experiment settings. The algorithm also improved the spleen segmentation throughput by 90 folds as compared to the manual segmentation. Moreover, we show that our novel spFCM algorithm outperformed traditional fast-learning classifiers as well as the U-Net deep-learning model in many aspects. Two major contributions of this paper are (1) an explainable algorithm for segmenting spleen tissues in cryo-images for the first time and (2) an spFCM algorithm as a new classifier. We also discussed that our work can be beneficial to researchers who work not only in the fields of graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) mouse models, but also in that of other immunological disease models where spleen analysis is essential. Segmentation tasks in medical images have always been a hot topic in the medical imaging field. Compared with traditional images, medical images have richer semantics, which increases the difficulty of feature learning. This paper proposes a new end-to-end dual-channel integrated cross-layer residual algorithm (TIC-Net) based on deep learning to fully mine the semantic information between features for medical image segmentation. First, in the encoder, we built a dual-channel network of traditional convolution and dilated convolution using multiple structures to learn different semantic information from the image and from feature fusion and residual calculation to achieve feature joint mining. Second, we added two sets of new integrated modules between the decoder and encoder to fully fuse the global and local features of each layer of the image in the encoder. Finally, in the decoder, we use a cross-layer feature residual fusion strategy to obtain more semantic information. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) provides excellent soft-tissue contrast for clinical diagnoses and research which underpin many recent breakthroughs in medicine and biology. The post-processing of reconstructed MR images is often automated for incorporation into MRI scanners by the manufacturers and increasingly plays a critical role in the final image quality for clinical reporting and interpretation. For image enhancement and correction, the post-processing steps include noise reduction, image artefact correction, and image resolution improvements. With the recent success of deep learning in many research fields, there is great potential to apply deep learning for MR image enhancement, and recent publications have demonstrated promising results. Motivated by the rapidly growing literature in this area, in this review paper, we provide a comprehensive overview of deep learning-based methods for post-processing MR images to enhance image quality and correct image artefacts. We aim to provide researchers in MRI or other research fields, including computer vision and image processing, a literature survey of deep learning approaches for MR image enhancement. We discuss the current limitations of the application of artificial intelligence in MRI and highlight possible directions for future developments. In the era of deep learning, we highlight the importance of a critical appraisal of the explanatory information provided and the generalizability of deep learning algorithms in medical imaging. Medical image analysis for perfect diagnosis of disease has become a very challenging task. Due to improper diagnosis, required medical treatment may be skipped. Proper diagnosis is needed as suspected lesions could be missed by the physician's eye. Hence, this problem can be settled up by better means with the investigation of similar case studies present in the healthcare database. In this context, this paper substantiates an assistive system that would help dermatologists for accurate identification of 23 different kinds of melanoma. For this, 2300 dermoscopic images were used to train the skin-melanoma similar image search system. The proposed system uses feature extraction by assigning dynamic weights to the low-level features based on the individual characteristics of the searched images. Optimal weights are obtained by the newly proposed optimized pair-wise comparison (OPWC) approach. The uniqueness of the proposed approach is that it provides the dynamic weights to the features of the searched image instead of applying static weights. The proposed approach is supported by analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and meta-heuristic optimization algorithms such as particle swarm optimization (PSO), JAYA, genetic algorithm (GA), and gray wolf optimization (GWO). The proposed approach has been tested with images of 23 classes of melanoma and achieved significant precision and recall. The interior reconstruction of completely truncated projection data is a frontier research hotspot in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) application. It is difficult to find a method with acceptable accuracy and high efficiency to solve it. Based on the simplified algebraic reconstruction technique (S-ART) algorithm and the filtered back projection (FBP) algorithm with the new filter, an efficient and feasible interior reconstruction algorithm is proposed in this paper. The algorithm uses the S-ART algorithm to quickly recover the complete projection data and then uses the new ramp filter which can suppress the high-frequency noise in the projection data to filter the recovered complete projection data. Finally, the interior reconstructed images are obtained by back projection. The computational complexity of the proposed algorithm is close to that of the FBP algorithm for the reconstruction of the whole object, and the reconstructed image quality is acceptable, which provides an effective method for interior reconstruction in CBCT. Under the background of telemedicine, a new registration and mosaic algorithm for medical images is proposed in this paper to solve the problems of electronic noise, uneven illumination and ray scattering in the real-time medical process. The improved Retinex algorithm by trilateral filter and homomorphic filtering algorithm can enhance the image effectively in preprocessing. The improved phase correlation algorithm based on log polar transformation was used to calculate parameters, such as rotation, scaling and translation. Then, the SUSAN corner matching points were extracted in overlapping positions, the improved KD tree was used for enhancing matching efficiency. Later, matching points were purified by the improved RANSAC algorithm. Finally, images were processed by Laplacian pyramid decomposition algorithm to make the image joint seemed smooth and natural. Microcalcifications (MCs) are the main signs of precancerous cells. The development of aided-system for their detection has become a challenge for researchers in this field. In this paper, we propose a system for MCs detection based on the multifractal approach that classifies mammographic ROIs into normal (healthy) or abnormal ROIs containing MCs. The proposed method is divided into four main steps: a mammogram pre-processing step based on breast selection, breast density reduction using haze removal algorithm and contrast enhancement using multifractal measures. The second step consists of extracting the normal and abnormal ROIs and calculating the multifractal spectrum of each ROI. The next step represents the extraction of the multifractal features from the multifractal spectrum and the GLCM characteristics of each ROI. The last step is the classification of ROIs where three classifiers are tested (KNN, DT, and SVM). The system is evaluated on images from the INbreast database (308 images) with a total of 2688 extracted ROIs (1344 normal, 1344 with MC) from different BI-RADS classes. In this study, the SVM classifier gave the best classification results with a sensitivity, specificity, and precision of 98.66%, 97.77%, and 98.20% respectively. Purpose: Artifacts in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans degrade image quality and thus negatively affect the outcome measures of clinical and research scanning. Considering the time-consuming and subjective nature of visual quality control (QC), multiple (semi-)automatic QC algorithms have been developed. This systematic review presents an overview of the available (semi-)automatic QC algorithms and software packages designed for raw, structural T1-weighted (T1w) MRI datasets. The objective of this review was to identify the differences among these algorithms in terms of their features of interest, performance, and benchmarks. Methods: We queried PubMed, EMBASE (Ovid), and Web of Science databases on the fifth of January 2023, and cross-checked reference lists of retrieved papers. Bias assessment was performed using PROBAST (Prediction model Risk Of Bias ASsessment Tool). Results: A total of 18 distinct algorithms were identified, demonstrating significant variations in methods, features, datasets, and benchmarks. The algorithms were categorized into rule-based, classical machine learning-based, and deep learning-based approaches. Numerous unique features were defined, which can be roughly divided into features capturing entropy, contrast, and normative measures. Conclusion: Due to dataset-specific optimization, it is challenging to draw broad conclusions about comparative performance. Additionally, large variations exist in the used datasets and benchmarks, further hindering direct algorithm comparison. The findings emphasize the need for standardization and comparative studies for advancing QC in MR imaging. Precise segmentation of the hippocampus is essential for various human brain activity and neurological disorder studies. To overcome the small size of the hippocampus and the low contrast of MR images, a dual multilevel constrained attention GAN for MRI-based hippocampus segmentation is proposed in this paper, which is used to provide a relatively effective balance between suppressing noise interference and enhancing feature learning. First, we design the dual-GAN backbone to effectively compensate for the spatial information damage caused by multiple pooling operations in the feature generation stage. Specifically, dual-GAN performs joint adversarial learning on the multiscale feature maps at the end of the generator, which yields an average Dice coefficient (DSC) gain of 5.95% over the baseline. Next, to suppress MRI high-frequency noise interference, a multilayer information constraint unit is introduced before feature decoding, which improves the sensitivity of the decoder to forecast features by 5.39% and effectively alleviates the network overfitting problem. Then, to refine the boundary segmentation effects, we construct a multiscale feature attention restraint mechanism, which forces the network to concentrate more on effective multiscale details, thus improving the robustness. Furthermore, the dual discriminators D1 and D2 also effectively prevent the negative migration phenomenon. Many current medical image segmentation methods utilize convolutional neural networks (CNNs), with some extended U-Net-based networks relying on deep feature representations to achieve satisfactory results. However, due to the limited receptive fields of convolutional architectures, they are unable to explicitly model the varying range dependencies present in medical images. Recently, advancements in large kernel convolution have allowed for the extraction of a wider range of low frequency information, making this task more achievable. In this paper, we propose TBUnet for solving the problem of difficult to accurately segment lesions with heterogeneous structures and fuzzy borders, such as melanoma, colon polyps and breast cancer. The TBUnet is a pure convolutional network with three branches for extracting high frequency information, low frequency information, and boundary information, respectively. It is capable of extracting features in various areas. To fuse the feature maps from the three branches, TBUnet presents the FL (fusion layer) module, which is based on threshold and logical operation. We design the FE (feature enhancement) module on the skip-connection to emphasize the fine-grained features. In addition, our method varies the number of input channels in different branches at each stage of the network, so that the relationship between low and high frequency features can be learned. TBUnet yields 91.08 DSC on ISIC-2018 for melanoma segmentation, and achieves better performance than state-of-the-art medical image segmentation methods. Furthermore, experimental results with 82.48 DSC and 89.04 DSC obtained on the BUSI dataset and the Kvasir-SEG dataset show that TBUnet outperforms the advanced segmentation methods. Denoising, skull stripping, segmentation, feature extraction, and classification are five important processes in this paper's development of a brain tumor classification model. The brain tumor image will be imposed first using the entropy-based trilateral filter to de-noising and this image is imposed to skull stripping by means of morphological partition and Otsu thresholding. Adaptive contrast limited fuzzy adaptive histogram equalization (CLFAHE) is also used in the segmentation process. The gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM) characteristics are derived from the segmented image. The collected GLCM features are used in a hybrid classifier that combines the neural network (NN) and deep belief network (DBN) ideas. As an innovation, the hidden neurons of the two classifiers are modified ideally to improve the prediction model's accuracy. Automatic segmentation and measurement of the choroid layer is useful in studying of related fundus diseases, such as diabetic retinopathy and high myopia. However, most algorithms are not helpful for choroid layer segmentation due to its blurred boundaries and complex gradients. Therefore, this paper aimed to propose a novel choroid segmentation method that combines image enhancement and attention-based dense (AD) U-Net network. The choroidal images obtained from optical coherence tomography (OCT) are pre-enhanced by algorithms that include flattening, filtering, and exponential and linear enhancement to reduce choroid-independent information. Experimental results obtained from 800 OCT B-scans of the choroid layers from both normal eyes and high myopia showed that image enhancement significantly increased the performance of ADU-Net, with an AUC of 99.51% and a DSC of 97.91%. The accuracy of segmentation using the ADU-Net method with image enhancement is superior to that of the existing networks. In addition, we describe some algorithms that can measure automatically choroidal foveal thickness and the volume of adjacent areas. Statistical analyses of the choroidal parameters variation indicated that compared with normal eyes, high myopia has a reduction of 86.3% of the choroidal foveal thickness and 90% of the adjacent volume. It proved that high myopia is likely to cause choroid layer attenuation. Poor acutance of images (unsharpness) is one of the major concerns in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI-based diagnosis and clinical interventions become difficult due to the vague textural information and weak morphological margins on images. A novel image sharpening algorithm named as maximum local variation-based unsharp masking (MLVUM) to address the issue of 'unsharpness' in MRI is proposed in this paper. In the MLVUM, the sharpened image is the algebraic sum of the input image and the product of the user-defined scale and the difference between the output of a newly designed nonlinear spatial filter named maximum local variation-controlled edge smoothing Gaussian filter (MLVESGF) and the input image, weighted by the normalised MLV. The MLVESGF is a locally adaptive 2D Gaussian edge smoothing kernel whose standard deviation is directly proportional to the local value of the normalized MLV. The values of the acutance-to-noise ratio (ANR) and absolute mean brightness error (AMBE) shown by the MLVUM on 100 MRI slices are 0.6463 ± 0.1852 and 0.3323 ± 0.2200, respectively. Compared to 17 state-of-the-art image sharpening algorithms, the MLVUM exhibited a higher ANR and lower AMBE. Optic disc localization offers an important clue in detecting other retinal components such as the macula, fovea, and retinal vessels. With the correct detection of this area, sudden vision loss caused by diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy can be prevented. Therefore, there is an increase in computer-aided diagnosis systems in this field. In this paper, an automated method for detecting optic disc localization is proposed. In the proposed method, the fundus images are moved from RGB color space to a new color space by using an artificial bee colony algorithm. In the new color space, the localization of the optical disc is clearer than in the RGB color space. In this method, a matrix called the feature matrix is created. This matrix is obtained from the color pixel values of the image patches containing the optical disc and the image patches not containing the optical disc. Then, the conversion matrix is created. The initial values of this matrix are randomly determined. These two matrices are processed in the artificial bee colony algorithm. Ultimately, the conversion matrix becomes optimal and is applied over the original fundus images. Thus, the images are moved to the new color space. Thresholding is applied to these images, and the optic disc localization is obtained. The success rate of the proposed method has been tested on three general datasets. Multimodal medical image fusion has been attracting the attention of researchers in recent years because it supports doctors in enhancing clinical diagnosis. Improving the quality of fused images and keeping important information from the input images remain a significant challenge for the current algorithms. Therefore, an effective approach for medical image fusion is introduced in this paper to address the challenges posed above. Initially, the three-scale image decomposition method using the weighted mean curvature filter and two-scale image decomposition is introduced to decompose the input images into high- and low-frequency coefficients. Subsequently, an efficient fusion rule for high-frequency components using maximum Gabor energy is proposed. This rule allows the preservation of important information in the composite image. Ultimately, the low-frequency components are synthesized using the optimal parameters from the Marine predators algorithm. This fusion rule is designed to ensure a good quality output image. A total of 120 pairs of medical images are tested in our experiments. Five latest medical image fusion methods and six image quality metrics are used for comparing and evaluating the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Image segmentation is a basic problem in medical image analysis and useful for disease diagnosis. However, the complexity of medical images makes image segmentation difficult. In recent decades, fuzzy clustering algorithms have been preferred due to their simplicity and efficiency. However, they are sensitive to noise. To solve this problem, many algorithms using non-local information have been proposed, which perform well but are inefficient. This paper proposes an improved fuzzy clustering algorithm utilizing nonlocal self-similarity and a low-rank prior for image segmentation. Firstly, cluster centers are initialized based on peak detection. Then, a pixel correlation model between corresponding pixels is constructed, and similar pixel sets are retrieved. To improve efficiency and robustness, the proposed algorithm uses a novel objective function combining non-local information and a low-rank prior. Multi-modal medical image fusion brings many benefits to clinical diagnosis and analysis because it creates favorable conditions for diagnostic imaging practitioners to make a more accurate diagnosis. According to our current knowledge, there are still some disadvantages to current image fusion approaches. The first one is that the fused images often have low contrast. The reason for this is several approaches use a weighted average rule for fusing low-frequency components. The second drawback is that the loss of detailed information in the fused image. This can be explained by the fact that the high-frequency components synthesized by the rules are not really effective. In this paper, two novel algorithms are proposed to tackle the above two disadvantages. The first algorithm is based on the Equilibrium optimizer algorithm (EOA) to find optimal parameters to fuse low-frequency components. This allows the fused image to have good contrast. The second algorithm is based on the sum of local energy functions using the Prewitt compass operator to create an efficient rule for the fusion of high-frequency components. This allows the fused image to significantly preserve details transferred from input images. Experimental results show that the proposed approach not only effective in significantly enhancing the quality of the fusion image but also preserving edge information carried from input images. Cytoskeleton and nucleus are two important anatomic components in eukaryotic cells. Cell fluorescence images are employed to study their realignment and deformation during cell extrusion. Quantitative analysis and modeling of cell orientation are investigated in this paper. For orientation measurement, alignment orientation of microfilaments is calculated using structure tensor method. Nuclei is segmented and fitted to ellipses in nuclei images. Based on the fitted ellipse, orientation and aspect ratio of each nucleus are computed. A morphological model is proposed to describe the movement of microfilaments quantitatively. The parameters of the model are determined by in-plane stresses obtained by numerical simulation. The proposed automatic orientation measurement algorithms can help to analyze the relationship between cell orientation and stress qualitatively. The proposed morphological model is the first model to quantitatively describe the relationship of microfilament movement with stress. Experimental results show that cell and nucleus tend to align along in-plane maximum shear stress and the proposed morphological model is a reasonable model for cell movement. With the advent of biomedical imaging technology, the number of captured and stored biomedical images is rapidly increasing day by day in hospitals, imaging laboratories and biomedical institutions. Therefore, more robust biomedical image analysis technology is needed to meet the requirement of the diagnosis and classification of various kinds of diseases using biomedical images. However, the current biomedical image classification methods and general non-biomedical image classifiers cannot extract more compact biomedical image features or capture the tiny differences between similar images with different types of diseases from the same category. In this paper, we propose a novel fused convolutional neural network to develop a more accurate and highly efficient classifier for biomedical images, which combines shallow layer features and deep layer features from the proposed deep neural network architecture. In the analysis, it was observed that the shallow layers provided more detailed local features, which could distinguish different diseases in the same category, while the deep layers could convey more high-level semantic information used to classify the diseases among the various categories. A detailed comparison of our approach with traditional classification algorithms and popular deep classifiers across several public biomedical image datasets showed the superior performance of our proposed method for biomedical image classification. In addition, we also evaluated the performance of our method in modality classification of medical images using the ImageCLEFmed dataset. Protecting the contents of medical records is of paramount importance when it comes to preserving patients’ privacy. Most existing cryptographic-based solutions rely on traditional encryption algorithms having a multi-round structure, which introduces processing latency and requires increased resources. Medical images possess special characteristics compared to other types of images. The main goal of this paper is to leverage these characteristics to design and implement an efficient and secure encryption algorithm for such images. The proposed solution defines three variants of encryption algorithms: (a) full, (b) middle-full, and (c) selective. The full approach encrypts all sub-matrices of an image, while the middle-full variant is a middle solution between the selective and full algorithms and its goal is to just hide the type of the medical image. Selective encryption identifies a set of sub-matrices of an image according to a statistical average test, known as region of interest (ROI). In the three approaches, a high security level is ensured since each image is encrypted independently of the previous and next images. Also, all primitives of the proposed cipher, such as permutation and substitution, depend on a dynamic key. Furthermore, the encryption scheme is efficient since the proposed round function is lightweight and applied for only one round. This reduces the latency and the required resources as compared to traditional cryptographic schemes. The proposed approach is flexible as it can be applied in either selective, middle-full, or full mode. Also, the size of a sub-matrix is variable and can be changed according to the available memory size. Several security and performance tests are conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed solution. The results validate the robustness of the proposed scheme against almost all considered types of attacks and show an improvement in terms of latency and resources compared to current image-encryption schemes. Emerging medical imaging applications in healthcare, the number and volume of medical images is growing dramatically. Information needs of users in such circumstances, either for clinical or research activities, make the role of powerful medical image search engines more significant. In this paper, a text-based multi-dimensional medical image indexing technique is proposed in which correlation of the features-usages (according to the user's queries) is considered to provide an off-the content indexing while taking users' interestingness into account. Assuming that each medical image has some extracted features (e.g., based on the DICOM standard), correlations of the features are discovered by performing data mining techniques (i.e., quantitative association pattern discovery), on the history of users' queries as a data set. Then, based on the pairwise correlation of the features of medical images (a.k.a. Affinity), set of the all features is fragmented into subsets (using method like the vertical fragmentation of the tables in distribution of relational DBs). After that, each of these subsets of the features turn into a hierarchy of the features (by applying a hierarchical clustering algorithm on that subset), subsequently all of these distinct hierarchies together make a multi-dimensional structure of the features of medical images, which is in fact the proposed text-based (feature-based) multi-dimensional index structure. Constructing and using such text-based multi-dimensional index structure via its specific required operations, medical image retrieval process would be improved in the underlying medical image search engine. Generally, an indexing technique is to provide a logical representation of documents in order to optimize the retrieval process. The proposed indexing technique is designed such that can improve retrieval of medical images in a medical image search engine in terms of its effectiveness and efficiency. Considering correlation of the features of the image would semantically improve precision (effectiveness) of the retrieval process, while traversing them through the hierarchy in one dimension would try to optimize (i.e., minimize) the resources to have a better efficiency. The proposed text-based multi-dimensional indexing technique is implemented using the open source search engine Lucene, and compared with the built-in indexing technique available in the Lucene search engine, and also with the Terrier platform (available for the benchmarking of information retrieval systems) and other the most related indexing techniques. Evaluation results of memory usage and time complexity analysis, beside the experimental evaluations efficiency and effectiveness measures show that the proposed multi-dimensional indexing technique significantly improves both efficiency and effectiveness for a medical image search engine. A novel robust zero-watermarking algorithm for medical images is presented in this paper. The multi-scale decomposition of bi-dimensional empirical mode decomposition (BEMD) has exhibited many attractive properties that enable the proposed algorithm to robustly detect the tampering regions and protect the copyright of medical images simultaneously. Given a medical image, we first decompose a medical image adaptively into a finite number of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) and a residue, by taking a full advantage of BEMD. The first IMF starts with the finest scale retaining fragile information and is best suitable for tampering detection, while the residue includes robust information at the coarser scale and is applied to the protection of intellectual property rights of medical images. Next, the feature matrices are extracted from the first IMF and the residue via singular value decomposition, which achieves robust performance subject to most attacks. For a given watermark image, it is encrypted by Arnold transform to enhance the security of the watermark. Then, the feature images are constructed by performing the exclusive-or operation between the encrypted watermark image and the extracted feature matrices. Finally, the feature images are securely stored in the copyright authentication database to be further used for copyright authentication and tampering detection. A large number of experimental results and comparisons with existing watermarking algorithms confirm that the newly proposed watermarking algorithm not only has strong ability on tampering detection, but also has better performance in combating various attacks, including cropping, Gaussian noise, median filtering, image enhancement attacks, etc. The newly developed algorithm also shows great promise in processing natural images. Image segmentation is a crucial stage in digital image processing used to obtain a more straightforward representation of images. Although classic bi-level segmentation is a relatively simple task, it only suffices to analyze rather simple images. More complex real-life scenarios such as medical imaging processing usually require multi-level segmentation to differentiate between the many regions of interest present in the original images. Traditional histogram-based approaches for multi-level segmentation tend to perform suboptimally, with the best performing being computationally expensive. This difficult compromise between performance and computational cost has led to the proposal of new approaches mixing a variety of optimization algorithms and statistical criteria. Despite the success of these new approaches, there is still room for improvement. It is under these circumstances that evolutionary algorithms like the cluster chaotic optimization (CCO) become relevant. The CCO takes advantage of the classification procedures of clustering techniques and the randomness of chaotic sequences for encouraging the search strategy. This paper proposes a novel method based on the CCO algorithm named minimum cross-entropy multi-level segmentation CCO (CEMS-CCO). The CEMS-CCO employs the cross-entropy as its fitness function and the CCO capabilities to deal with multimodal functions to search for the optimal solution to the multi-level segmentation problem. The CEMS-CCO shows competitive results for medical images multi-level segmentation regarding different quality metrics. Furthermore, its robustness and effectiveness are tested through the analysis of well-known benchmark images. Medical images exchanged over vulnerable networks are sensitive to modifications or tampering which could lead to misdiagnosis, risking the lives of the patients. Therefore, to provide safe and secure transmission of medical images, key security requirements such as authenticity, integrity, and confidentiality must be addressed. In this paper, a novel and efficient algorithm is proposed which provides security services for transmitted medical images in tele-medicine applications. The proposed algorithm employs joint encryption/watermarking procedures to provide the required security services, as well as to provide control access privileges at the receiving side. The algorithm is based on reversible data hiding principles that guarantee the extraction of the hidden data while restoring the original image unaffected. The embedded data is basically two watermarks; a spatial domain watermark and an encrypted domain watermark. The dual watermarks allow the authenticity and integrity of the transmitted medical images to be verified in the spatial and encrypted domains. Sensitive multimedia information of all forms is encrypted, with key, before storage and transmission, to protect from illegal use and data manipulation. Since digital images are larger, it's crucial to encrypt the content, specifically in medical images effectively. In medical image diagnosis, even a small manipulation of data may lead to misinterpretation. This paper addresses this concern by devising an algorithm suitable for encrypting DICOM and other types of images. RC6 cipher is used for encrypting the approximation coefficients (LL), obtained by applying the Haar wavelet transform on the plain image and combined with the redistributed (confused) detailed coefficients (LH, HL, HH). Generation of keys through governing equations of Combined Logistical Tent map, adds to the robustness of the algorithm against attacks. This algorithm works well for all types of images, including DICOM. Among several image databases available, 30 different modalities of images have been taken for experimentation, and promising results have been achieved. Results show that on an average, for an image of bit-depth eight, the proposed encryption algorithm provides the PSNR of 9.0955 dB, the entropy of 7.9990 bits for an encrypted image and, with a UACI of 33.4549 and NPCR of 99.6129, the algorithm could effectively defy the statistical and differential attacks. Digital images used in the field of ophthalmology are among the most important methods for automatic detection of certain eye diseases. These processes include image enhancement as a primary step to assist optometrists in identifying diseases. Therefore, many algorithms and methods have been developed for the enhancement of retinal fundus images, which may experience challenges that typically accompany enhancement processes, such as artificial borders and dim lighting that mask image details. To eliminate these problems, a new algorithm is proposed in this paper based on separating colour images into three channels (red, green, and blue). The green channel is passed through a Wiener filter and reinforced using the CLAHE technique before merging with the original red and blue channels. Reducing the green channel noise with this approach is proven effective over the other colour channels. Results from the Contrast Improvement Index (CII) and linear index of fuzziness (r) test indicate the success of the proposed algorithm compared with alternate algorithms in the application of improving blood vessel imagery and other details within ten test fundus images selected from the DRIVER database. Group independent component analysis (GICA) has been successfully applied to study multi-subject functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data, and the group independent component (GIC) represents the commonality of all subjects in the group. However, some studies show that the performance of GICA can be improved by incorporating a priori information, which is not always considered when looking for GICs in existing GICA methods. In this paper, we propose an improved multi-objective optimization-based constrained independent component analysis (CICA) method to take advantage of the temporal a priori information extracted from all subjects in the group by incorporating it into the computational process of GICA for group fMRI data analysis. The experimental results of simulated and real data show that the activated regions and the time course detected by the improved CICA method are more accurate in some sense. Moreover, the GIC computed by the improved CICA method has a higher correlation with the corresponding independent component of each subject in the group, which means that the improved CICA method with the temporal a priori information extracted from the group can better reflect the commonality of the subjects. This paper describes how to simulate medical imaging by computational intelligence to explore areas that cannot be easily achieved by traditional ways, including genes and proteins simulations related to cancer development and immunity. This paper has presented simulations and virtual inspections of BIRC3, BIRC6, CCL4, KLKB1 and CYP2A6 with their outputs and explanations, as well as brain segment intensity due to dancing. Our proposed MapReduce framework with the fusion algorithm can simulate medical imaging. The concept is very similar to the digital surface theories to simulate how biological units can get together to form bigger units, until the formation of the entire unit of biological subject. The M-Fusion and M-Update function by the fusion algorithm can achieve a good performance evaluation which can process and visualize up to 40 GB of data within 600 s. Deep learning is an important new area of machine learning which encompasses a wide range of neural network architectures designed to complete various tasks. In the medical imaging domain, example tasks include organ segmentation, lesion detection, and tumor classification. The most popular network architecture for deep learning for images is the convolutional neural network (CNN). Whereas traditional machine learning requires determination and calculation of features from which the algorithm learns, deep learning approaches learn the important features as well as the proper weighting of those features to make predictions for new data. In this paper, we will describe some of the libraries and tools that are available to aid in the construction and efficient execution of deep learning as applied to medical images. Determining the minimum image resolution needed for clinical assessment is crucial for computational efficiency, image standardization, and storage needs alleviation. In this paper, we explore the image resolution requirements for the assessment of alopecia by analyzing how clinicians detect the presence of characteristics needed to quantify the disorder in the clinic. By setting the image resolution as a function of width of the patient's head, we mimicked experiments conducted in the computer vision field to understand human perception in the context of scene recognition and object detection and asked 6 clinicians to identify the regions of interest on a set of retrospectively collected de-identified images at different resolutions. The experts were able to detect the presence of alopecia at very low resolutions, while significantly higher resolution was required to identify the presence of vellus-like hair. Furthermore, the accuracy with which alopecia was detected as a function of resolution followed the same trend as the one obtained when we classified normal versus abnormal hair density using a standard neural network architecture, hinting that the resolution needed by an expert human observer may also provide an upper bound for future image processing algorithms. The accurate localization of nodules in ultrasound images can convey crucial information to support a reliable diagnosis. However, this is usually challenging due to low contrast and image artifacts, especially in thyroid ultrasound images where nodules are relatively small in most cases. To address these problems, in this paper, we propose a joint-training convolutional neural network (CNN) for thyroid nodule localization in ultrasound images. Considering the advantage of the faster region-based CNN (Faster R-CNN) in detecting natural targets, we adopt it as the basic framework. To boost the representative power and noise suppression capability of the network, the attention mechanism module is embedded for adaptive feature refinement along the channel and spatial dimensions. Furthermore, in the training process, we annotate the training set in a novel way, called joint-training annotation, by exploiting the fake foreground (FFG) area around the nodule as a spatial prior constraint to improve the sensitivity to small nodules. Ablation experiments are conducted to verify the effectiveness of our proposed method. The experimental results show that our method outperforms others by a mean average precision (mAP) of 0.93 and achieves an intersection over union (IoU) of 0.9, indicating that the localization results agree well with the ground truth. Furthermore, extended experiments on breast nodule datasets are also conducted to verify the generalizability of the proposed approach. Above all, the proposed algorithm is of considerable significance for accurate thyroid nodule localization in ultrasound images and can be generalized to other types of nodules, thereby providing trustworthy assistance for clinical diagnosis. Securing digital medical images is increasingly becoming a major concern due to the rapid growth of the amount of medical images transferred over a network and stored on the web servers. However, the enormous size of multimedia and the huge volume of exchanging medical images have motivated the development of low computational complexity methods. This paper presents a lightweight selective encryption scheme to encrypt the edge maps of medical images. The edge map is firstly extracted by an edge detection method. Then, a chaotic map is used to generate a large key space. We propose a one-time pad algorithm to respectively encrypt the significant detected image blocks. The experimental results have proven that the proposed encryption scheme provides an acceptable percentage of encrypted image data. It can also effectively perform image encryption and decryption in a lightweight manner, which makes the scheme a good candidate for real time applications. The classification of leukocytes in peripheral blood images is an important milestone to be achieved because it can greatly assist pathologists to diagnose diseases such as leukemia, anemia, and other blood disorders. To a certain extent, a good segmentation method for identifying leukocytes from their background is the first step to the efficient functioning of the leukocytes classification system. However, the morphological structure of leukocytes, poor contrast, and the variations in their shape and size lead to the degradation of the segmentation accuracy. In this paper, we propose a new leukocyte segmentation framework that first locates and then segments leukocytes from peripheral blood images. Here, the locations of the leukocytes are first identified using a novel edge strength cue (ESc), and later, the Grabcut model is deployed to obtain the segmentation of the leukocytes. The novelty lies in the way the location of the leukocytes is detected, and this improves the leukocyte segmentation accuracy. The experimental evaluation is performed on ALL-IDB1, Cellavision, and LISC datasets for leukocyte segmentation based on the detection of the ESc location. Experimental results are evaluated using precision, recall, and F-score measures. The proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art techniques.
