One of the characteristic features of the gravity recordings produced by the superconducting gravimeter CT #036 at Ishigakijima, Japan, is that it indicates gravity increase when a typhoon (hurricane) approaches the island. Since we are trying to detect small gravity signals associated with the long-term slow slip events in this region, it is very important in the interpretation of the observed data whether such gravity changes are of natural or instrumental origin. In this paper, we investigate whether or not nonlinearity in the sensor of the superconducting gravimeter is responsible for this phenomenon. Here we take the same theoretical approach as taken by our previous study which investigated the effect of coupling between horizontal and vertical components of the gravity sensor in order to understand the noise caused by the movements of a nearby VLBI antenna. From theoretical and experimental approaches, we prove that the gravity increase observed by CT #036 at the times of high background noise level cannot be explained by instrumental effects, such as the nonlinearity in the vertical component or the coupling between horizontal and vertical components of the gravity sensor. Purpose: To evaluate the association of remnant preservation (RP) and non-RP (NRP) with patient-reported outcome measures and subsequent graft rupture at a minimum 2-year follow-up after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. Methods: Patients in this retrospective study underwent primary isolated ACL reconstruction by the RP or NRP technique with a four- to five-strand hamstring tendon graft. Multivariate linear or logistic regression and Cox regression analyses were performed to compare the physical and psychological outcomes by the International Knee Documentation Committee subjective knee form (IKDC-SKF) and the Japanese Anterior Cruciate Ligament questionnaire 25 (JACL-25), respectively; satisfaction rate; and prognosticators of graft rupture. Results: In total, 120 patients (mean age, 30.6 ± 12.7 years; 54 RP, 66 NRP) with a mean follow-up of 3.2 ± 1.6 years were enrolled in this study. At the latest postoperative follow-up, the RP group showed a mean IKDC-SKF score of 92.3 ± 8.5 and mean JACL-25 score of 13.2 ± 11.2, while these scores in the NRP group were 86.4 ± 12.2 and 24.4 ± 19.5, respectively (P = 0.016 and 0.007, respectively). No significant differences were found in the return-to-sports rate (RP vs. NRP, 79.5% vs. 67.5%) or satisfaction rate (RP vs. NRP, 89.2% vs. 74.4%) (n.s.); however, a significant difference was found in the rate of return to the preinjury sports level (RP vs. NRP, 64.1% vs. 37.5%; P = 0.014). The graft rupture rate was significantly higher in the NRP than RP group (9/66 vs. 1/54; hazard ratio 9.29; 95% confidence interval 1.04–82.81). Younger age (≤ 18 years) was the other important risk factor for graft rupture (hazard ratio 8.67; 95% confidence interval 2.02–37.13). Conclusion: Patients who underwent ACL reconstruction with the RP technique obtained somewhat better physical and psychological results than those who underwent ACL reconstruction with the NRP technique. With respect to clinical relevance, patients treated with the RP technique may obtain better outcomes in terms of graft rupture and return to the preinjury sports level than those treated with the NRP technique, but with no differences in overall return to sports or satisfaction. The invasion of jumping worms, a small group of pheretimoid earthworm species from Asia, has increasingly become an ecological, environmental and conservation issue in forest ecosystems and urban-suburban landscapes around the world. Their presence is often noticed due to their high abundance, distinctive "jumping" behavior, and prominent granular casts on the soil surface. Although they are known to affect soil carbon dynamics and nutrient availability, no single paper has summarized their profound impacts on soil biodiversity, plant community, and animals of all trophic groups that rely on soil and the leaf litter layer for habitat, food, and shelter. In this study, we summarize the biology, invasion, and ecological impacts of invasive jumping worms across North America. We highlight potential impacts of this second wave of earthworm invasion, contrast them with the preceding European earthworm invasion in temperate forests in North America, and identify annual life cycle, reproductive and cocoon survival strategies, casting behavior and co-invasion dynamics as the key factors that contribute to their successful invasion and distinct ecological impacts. We then suggest potential management and control strategies for practitioners and policy makers, underscore the importance of coordinated community science projects in tracking the spread, and identify knowledge gaps that need to be addressed to understand and control the invasion. Amyloidosis is induced by extracellular deposition of certain proteins. Thirty-six proteins have so far been identified as amyloidogenic proteins in humans. Although it is very important to determine the specific amyloid protein type for the choice of therapy for amyloidosis patient, it might be difficult to identify specific proteins from amyloid-deposited tissue. Apolipoprotein A-IV is known as an amyloid-associated protein, but there have been few reports of apolipoprotein A-IV amyloidosis. Here we report a case of systemic apolipoprotein A-IV-associated amyloidosis that was confirmed by proteome analysis using formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue and an immunohistochemical technique. Purpose: Although platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy has become an increasingly popular treatment for sports-related injuries, the molecular mechanisms of PRP on tissue healing process remain poorly understood. The aim of the present study was to develop an experimental method quantifying the efficacy of PRP with murine patellar tendon injury model, leading to future elucidation of the mechanisms of PRP on healing processes. Methods: Full-thickness defects were created in the central third of the murine patellar tendon. The prepared allogenic PRP gel was applied on the defect of the patellar tendon (PRP group), while the remaining mice served as the untreated control group. Mice were sacrificed at 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 weeks after the operation, with histological sections obtained in each time point (n = 4 / time point / group). Semi-quantitative histological evaluation was performed in accordance with the Bonar score. The variables included in this scoring system were cell morphology, ground substance, collagen arrangement, and vascularity, with higher grades indicating worse tendon structures. In addition, the ratio of the collagen fibers to the entire tendon tissue (FT ratio) was measured using KS400 software as a quantitative histological evaluation. Results: The total Bonar score in the PRP group was significantly lower than in control group. With regard to the variables in the Bonar score, the vascularity score was significantly higher in the PRP group at 2 and 4 weeks, while the collagen arrangement score was significantly lower in the PRP group at 8 weeks. Based on a quantitative evaluation, the recovery speed of the patellar tendon determined by FT ratio was significantly faster in the PRP group than in the control group at 6 and 8 weeks. Conclusions: We have developed an experimental method for histological and quantitative evaluation of the effects of PRP on tissue healing using murine patellar tendon injury model. The results of this study suggest that the local application of PRP could enhance the tissue-healing process both directly through action on localized cells and indirectly through the recruitment of reparative cells through the blood flow. Although the benefit of updated therapeutic regimens, including bortezomib, on the survival of immunoglobulin light chain (AL) amyloidosis patients with heart failure (HF) has been reported, predictors of mortality in the patients treated with the updated therapy remain unclear. We retrospectively enrolled AL amyloidosis patients who had severe HF at the time of diagnosis and received the updated therapy, including bortezomib (n = 19, 61 ± 6 years old, 68% male). Severe HF was defined as the presence of both NYHA functional class III or IV and BNP > 200 pg/ml or NT-pro-BNP > 900 pg/ml. One-year mortality rate during follow-up after commencement of the treatment was 37%. Left ventricular morphological parameters and indexes of left ventricular diastolic function on admission were similar in the non-survivors and survivors. However, non-survivors had higher incidences of atrial fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia, higher serum total bilirubin levels (1.34 ± 0.55 vs. 0.61 ± 0.29 mg/dl), higher right atrial volume index (RAVI 49.7 ± 29.9 vs. 27.3 ± 6.8 ml/m2), lower tricuspid annular peak velocities during systole (RVs' 8.0 ± 1.8 vs. 11.6 ± 3.7 cm/sec) and late diastole (RVa' 3.4 ± 0.9 vs. 11.4 ± 5.3 cm/sec), and larger inferior vena cava dimension (22.7 ± 6.4 vs. 16.3 ± 4.9 mm) than those in survivors. Kaplan–Meier curve analyses showed that larger RAVI and lower RVs' and RVa', but not left ventricular systolic/diastolic dysfunction, predicted higher mortality during 1-year follow-up. The present results suggest that the presence of right-sided heart abnormality on admission is associated with high 1-year mortality in AL amyloidosis patients with severe HF under the updated therapeutic regimens. The anticancer effects of immune checkpoint inhibitors against CTLA4 and CD274-PDCD1 axes are evident. However, these immunotherapies for colorectal cancers (CRCs) are now limited to a small subset of patients with microsatellite unstable tumors. Thus, therapeutics targeting other types of CRCs is desired. The CD70-CD27 axis plays a co-stimulatory role in promoting the expansion and differentiation of T-lymphocytes through the activation of NFκB pathway. Aberrant activation of the CD70-CD27 axis accelerates tumor cell proliferation, survival, and immune evasion of tumor cells. Based on these observations, drugs modulating the CD70-CD27 axis have been developed with expectation of anticancer effects. In the present study, 269 primary CRCs were evaluated immunohistochemically for CD70, CD27, and FOXP3 expression to assess their clinical usage and the application of CD70-CD27 axis modulating drugs. CRC tumor cells rarely (2.2%) expressed CD70. In contrast, tumor-surrounding fibroblasts showed various CD70 expressions (fCD70) in 14.9%. The logistic regression analysis revealed significant association of fCD70 expression with incomplete resection status (OR, 2.60; 95% CI, 1.10-6.13; P = 0.029). Overall survival was significantly decreased in the cohort of the patients with fCD70-positive tumor (P = 0.0078). Furthermore, significantly more CD27+ tumor-associated lymphocytes were detected within the primary CRCs without metastases (P = 0.024). Thus, the CD70-CD27 axis may have several roles in CRCs independent from their mismatch repair (MMR) system status. Dried achene or anthocarpous accessory fruits of Rosa multiflora Thunb., Rosae fructus ("Eijitsu" in Japanese), have been used in clinical practice to improve constipation within traditional Japanese medicine. Recently, it has been claimed that the efficacy of this crude drug is decreasing, and multiflorin A, the purgative component, was not detected within the tested samples. In order to clarify the causes of this issue, we investigated Rosa section Synstylae (Rosaceae), including R. multiflora, growing in Japan and South Korea with a focus on the secondary metabolite, multiflorin A. We recognize that there are two chemotypes based on the presence (Type I) or absence (Type II) of multiflorin A. Type I contains quercitrin, multinoside A, multiflorin B, and multinoside A acetate as major index compounds. Type II contains hyperin, isoquercitrin, quercetin 3-O-glucuronide, and 3′-methoxy-isoquercitrin as the major index compounds. The chemotype of Rosa section Synstylae (Rosaceae) plants collected in Japan (excluding Tsushima Island) were all classified as Type I with exception of two species, R. luciae and R. sambucina. On the other hand, both Type I and Type II were detected within Rosae fructus obtained from R. multiflora collected in South Korea and Tsushima Island, Japan. The results indicate that Rosae fructus from R. multiflora (Type I) from Japan, excluding Tsushima Island, should be employed clinically, which we describe as purgative. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Osteoarthritis of the knee (knee OA) induces pain, loss of mobility and diminished activities of daily living (ADL). Although an understanding of the pathophysiology of early stage knee OA has been developed, the structural changes associated with disability for ADL in early stage knee OA are still unclear. The aim of the present study was to examine magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-detected changes associated with disability for ADL in patients with early stage knee OA. One hundred and thirty-two patients with early stage medial knee OA (Kellgren-Lawrence grade ≤ 2) who first visited the outpatient clinic at our university hospital were included. They were also examined by 3.0-Tesla knee MRI. The OA-associated structural changes were scored using the Whole-Organ Magnetic Resonance Imaging Score (WORMS), and clinical manifestations were evaluated by the Japanese Knee Osteoarthritis Measure (JKOM). Median quartile regression was used for the analysis. Cartilage lesion, subchondral bone attrition and osteophytes were observed in all patients. Bone marrow lesions (BMLs) and synovitis were observed in 60% and 55% of the patients, respectively. Subchondral cysts and ligament changes were observed in 6% and 17% of the patients, respectively. Pain severity of the patients was associated with medial cartilage lesions (coefficient 2.50, 95% confidence interval 0.61-4.40, p < 0.01). Disability for ADL of the patients was associated with BMLs in the medial side of the knee joint (0.82, 0.21-1.02, p = 0.04). Purpose: To identify factors associated with quantified rotatory stability (pivot-shift phenomenon) in the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)-injured knee joint.Methods: A consecutive sample of 54 patients who were diagnosed with an ACL injury and admitted to our hospital to undergo ACL reconstruction were enrolled in this study. Antero-lateral rotatory laxity of the knee joint was quantified using a Kinematic Rapid Assessment device (KiRA; Orthokey LTD) under spinal block before initiating reconstruction of the ACL. Univariate and multivariate regressions were performed assuming relationships between patient characteristics (independent variables) and quantified antero-lateral rotatory stability (a dependent variable).Results: It was observed that a low BMI (t = - 1.659, n.s.), greater passive knee extension angle (t = 2.374, P = 0.023), and a narrower lateral femoral condyle width index (t = - 1.712, n.s.) could be candidates associated with the antero-lateral rotatory instability, using univariate analysis. Employing multivariate analysis controlling for these three variables, that the range of passive knee extension was found to be significantly associated with antero-lateral rotatory instability in the ACL-injured knee joint (t = 2.21, P = 0.035). Patients were then divided into two groups (pivot-shift negative versus positive groups) based on the KiRA-documented quantified pivot-shift test. Interestingly, 23.3% of patients were pivot-shift negative, even though their ACL was confirmed as a complete rupture by arthroscopic observations. The degree of passive knee extension was 2.3 ± 4.5 (mean ± SD) in the pivot-shift negative group, while it was 6.8 ± 6.6 in the pivot-shift positive group (n.s.). The lateral femoral condyle width index was 36.6 ± 2.0% in the pivot-shift negative group, and it was significantly wider than in the pivot-shift positive group (33.8 ± 2.6%, P = 0.0046). Finally, we estimated that the risk of positive pivot-shift depends on the degree of knee extension. The logistic regression analysis revealed that genu recurvatum significantly increased the odds ratio for positive pivot-shift (OR = 3.08, P = 0.047, 95% CI = 1.017-9.350).Conclusions: This study revealed that greater antero-lateral rotatory instability in patients with a complete ACL rupture was associated with genu recurvatum and small lateral femoral condyle. These factors should be considered as predictors of a poor outcome from an ACL reconstruction due to a higher load on the ACL graft, and therefore, the attending physicians should modify the treatment strategies accordingly. Dyad 4, comprising a triphenylamine (TPA) electron donor and 1,4-pentadien-3-one (pentadienone) electron acceptor tethered by a nonconjugated linker, displays solvatofluorochromism (SFC) and dual fluorescence associated with intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) in the excited state. While the fluorescence arises from a locally excited state of 4 (LE-4*) in saturated hydrocarbon solvents, the fluorescence from the ICT state of 4 (ICT-4*) occurs in aprotic solvents. ICT-4* has a much greater dipole moment than its corresponding ground state. The results of theoretical calculations suggest that the conversion of LE-4* to ICT-4* involves a unique structural change like a leaning of the pentadienone moiety. Two factors are responsible for the significant SFC displayed by 4, the first being the high electron-donating and -accepting abilities of the respective locally excited TPA and pentadienone moieties in LE-4* and the other being a rigid ethano bridge that links the two moieties in ICT-4*. The former property facilitates photoinduced electron-transfer (PET) and the latter prevents full single electron transfer (SET) by prohibiting direct π-conjugation and the spatial approach of the two dyad components. The semiconductor properties of the earliest known stable radical, α,γ-bisdiphenylene-β-phenylallyl radical (Koelsch radical, 1•) were assessed using spectroscopic and electrical techniques. This radical undergoes reversible redox processes, and it has low redox potentials. In addition, 1• possesses long wavelength absorption bands, owing to the existence of a singly-occupied molecular orbital whose energy level lies between those of the HOMO and LUMO. Purpose: To identify unknown risk factors associated with fifth metatarsal stress fracture (Jones fracture).Methods: A case-controlled study was conducted among male Japanese professional football (soccer) players with (N = 20) and without (N = 40) a history of Jones fracture. Injury history and physical examination data were reviewed, and the two groups were compared. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression controlling for age, leg dominance and body mass index were used to obtain odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) to describe the association between physical examination data and the presence or absence of Jones fractures.Results: From 2000 to 2014, among 162 professional football club players, 22 (13.6%; 21 Asians and one Caucasian) had a history of Jones fracture. Thirteen out of 22 (60%) had a Jones fracture in their non-dominant leg. The mean range of hip internal rotation (HIR) was restricted in players with a history of Jones fracture [25.9° ± 7.5°, mean ± standard deviation (SD)] compared to those without (40.4° ± 11.1°, P < 0.0001). Logistic regression analyses demonstrated that HIR limitation increased the risk of a Jones fracture (OR = 3.03, 95% CI 1.45-6.33, P = 0.003). Subgroup analysis using data prior to Jones fracture revealed a causal relationship, such that players with a restriction of HIR were at high risk of developing a Jones fracture [Crude OR (95% CI) = 6.66 (1.90-23.29), P = 0.003, Adjusted OR = 9.91 (2.28-43.10), P = 0.002]. In addition, right HIR range limitation increased the risks of developing a Jones fracture in the ipsilateral and the contralateral feet [OR = 3.11 (1.35-7.16) and 2.24 (1.22-4.12), respectively]. Similarly, left HIR range limitation increased the risks in the ipsilateral or the contralateral feet [OR (95% CI) = 4.88 (1.56-15.28) and 2.77 (1.08-7.08), respectively].Conclusion: The restriction of HIR was associated with an increased risk of developing a Jones fracture. The eastern hive bee Apis cerana is a major honeybee species in Asia providing numerous ecosystem services. Understanding how much the honeybees depend on natural and human-influenced plants and landscapes in different climates is important could contribute to evaluate how wild honeybees use food resources and to measure the ecosystem services. We investigated the effects of land use and climate changes on stable nitrogen and carbon isotope ratios in wild populations of A. cerana. In populations from 139 individual sites throughout Japan, we measured nitrogen (δN) and carbon (δC) stable isotope ratios and analyzed the effects of land use and climate. Our results showed that forested areas and annual precipitation had significant effects on δN, and that paddy fields and urban areas had significant effects on δC. These results suggest that A. cerana sensibly uses available food resources in the various environments and that stable nitrogen and carbon isotope ratios clearly reflect the effects of land use and climate changes on the populations of A. cerana. Thus, stable nitrogen and carbon isotope ratios in A. cerana, which widely distributes in Asia, can be used as indicators of the environments, such as land use and climate, of an area within its foraging range. Molecular sensing abilities and selectivities of a 'turn-on' chemosensor, NBDamine-appended α-cyclodextrin ( NC0αCD), were studied for cyclic alcohols and acyclic alcohols. The photophysical properties of o-tolyl-, m-tolyl-, and p-xylyl-substituted asymmetric diaroylmethanatoboron difluorides in a mixture of CH2Cl2 and c-C6H12, and in the crystalline state were determined. In solution, the fluorescence (FL) properties of these substances are controlled by the position and number of methyl groups on the phenyl rings. An especially interesting finding is that FL from the p-xylyl derivative occurs from an excited state which possesses intramolecular charge-transfer character caused by the o- and m-methyl groups cooperatively. The results of X-ray crystallographic analysis reveal that these asymmetric diaroylmethanatoboron difluorides form dyads through orbital overlap of neighboring molecules. Purpose: Despite objectively good results, up to 70 % of individuals may not return to their pre-injury level of sports activity after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery. Although psychological responses have been shown to affect outcomes after ACL injury, an appropriate means of measuring their effects, in addition to functional status, has not been determined. The purpose of this study was to develop a patient-reported questionnaire for measuring psychological factors associated with outcomes after ACL injury and to evaluate its reliability, validity, and responsiveness.Methods: After item analysis based on the results of two pilot studies and a short relevance assessment, 25 questionnaire items were selected for the Japanese Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury Questionnaire 25 (JACL-25) and assessed for validity, reliability, and responsiveness in subjects with ACL injury.Results: The JACL-25 had no floor or ceiling effects and no confounding factors. A Cronbach's alpha coefficient of 0.981 and a Guttman split-half coefficient of 0.983 indicated excellent reliability. Large standardized response means (1.30-1.62) and effect sizes (0.96-1.51) from the preoperative to postoperative period indicated good responsiveness. Construct structures were created, and these items were separated into three domains. Strong correlations between the JACL-25 and the International Knee Documentation Committee Subjective Knee Form (r s = -0.86), Lysholm Score (r s = -0.73), and Tegner Activity Scale (r s = -0.65) indicated good concurrent validity of the JACL-25.Conclusions: The present study demonstrated that the JACL-25 was valid, reliable, and responsive enough to evaluate psychological factors associated with outcomes in individuals with ACL injuries.Level Of Evidence: Diagnostic study, Level III. In questionnaire studies for evaluating objects such as manufacturing products, evaluators are required to respond to several evaluation items for the objects. When the number of objects is large, a part of the objects is often assigned randomly to each evaluator, and the response becomes a matrix with missing components. To handle this kind of data, we consider a model by using a dummy matrix representing the existence of the missing components, which can be interpreted as an extension of the GMANOVA model. In addition, to cope with the case where the numbers of the object and evaluation items are large, we consider a ridge-type estimator peculiar to our model to avoid instability in estimation. Moreover, we derive a C criterion in order to select the tuning parameters included in our estimator. This paper presents the effect of mold stiffness on the surface flatness of mold-pressed glass for glass molding and imprint processes. Phosphate and borosilicate glasses were pressed at their viscoelastic temperature region using flat molds of several kinds and subsequently cooled to room temperature. Surface flatness of the mold-pressed glasses was examined using a stylus surface profilometer. The glass surface curvature was observed after spontaneous demolding by thermal shrinkage stress of the glass and the mold during cooling. The curvature decreased with increasing mold stiffness, as determined by the Young's modulus and mold thickness. The curvature also decreased with decreasing cooling rate during cooling, which was discussed in terms of the glass fragility. The thermally backward reaction involved in the mechanofluorochromism of dibenzoylmethanatoboron difluoride (BF2DBM) derivatives, accompanied by an amorphous–crystalline phase transition, was quantitatively evaluated based on kinetics and thermodynamics. The kinetics was discussed by evaluation of the effect of temperature on the time-dependent changes of the fluorescence intensity for amorphous samples obtained by mechanical grinding. The thermodynamics was discussed based on data for the amorphous–crystalline phase transition obtained by differential scanning calorimetry. The enthalpy of activation (ΔH‡) of BF2DBM derivatives with MeO groups (2aBF2) was larger than that of derivatives with alkyl groups (2b-dBF2), whereas the entropy of activation (ΔS‡) was smaller than that of the derivatives with alkyl groups. It is proposed that the reaction dynamics of 2aBF2 will be governed by rotational motion around the C(methyl)–O bond. Interestingly, the Gibbs energies of activation (ΔG‡) were comparable for the reactions of all members of the BF2DBM series, though ΔH‡ and ΔS‡ were strongly dependent on the identity of the substituent. It is proposed that the substituent-dependent ΔS‡ term is one of the key parameters for understanding the mechanofluorochromism of BF2DBM derivatives associated with the amorphous–crystalline phase transition. Porous monolithic SiO-poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) nanocomposites were fabricated by drying an SiO-PVA suspension. Depending on the amount of added PVA and pH value of the suspension, the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface areas, total pore volumes, and mean pore radii of the (100 − x)SiO- xPVA ( x = 0, 10, 20, 30 wt%) nanocomposites were 102-313 m g, 0.61-1.42 cm g, and 8.1-14.7 nm, respectively. Some cracks were observed in the monolithic SiO-PVA nanocomposite, affected by the pore size. To elucidate crack generation, the correlation between the dispersion/aggregation in the SiO-PVA suspension and the pore size distribution of the nanocomposite was evaluated in terms of the added PVA amount and pH value. At x = 20 and pH 3, the SiO particles and PVA aggregated in the suspension. The preparation of crack-free monolithic SiO-PVA nanocomposites was possible using the aggregated suspension owing to the low capillary force during drying because of the relatively large pores. High-dose melphalan with autologous stem cell transplantation (HDM/ASCT) is a promising treatment option for eligible patients with systemic immunoglobulin light chain (AL) amyloidosis. We present the results of ASCT following risk-adapted melphalan conditioning on the basis of criteria proposed by our group, including B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP). Ten patients with primary systemic AL amyloidosis treated at our institute were evaluated. A full dose of melphalan (200 mg/m) was administered to patients who met all the following: performance status, 0 or 1; number of organs involved, 2 or less; serum creatinine, 1.5 mg/dL or less; EF 50 % or more and BNP 200 pg/mL or less; otherwise 140 mg/m. The hematologic complete response was achieved in four and organ response was seen in two patients. The median event-free survival (EFS) of all patients was 21.5 months, and median overall survival (OS) was 47.0 months. EFS and OS were significantly longer for patients who received 200 mg/m of melphalan than for those who received lower dose (EFS: not reached vs. 13.9 months, P = 0.0217; OS: not reached vs. 13.8 months, P = 0.0186). No treatment-related mortality within 100 days from ASCT was observed. Evaluation of cardiac diastolic function may contribute to safer HDM/ASCT and improve outcome of AL amyloidosis. A robust and reliable gas sensing device is considered as a convenient and practical solution for gas concentration monitoring that has become a mandatory requirement in different field of applications. For in situ hazardous gases detection, a mixed-potential type gas sensor has been regarded as a promising solid-state gas sensor. For the past three decades, there has been a significant progress in achieving high performance in mixed-potential type sensors. Therefore, this review is focused on reporting the development of mixed-potential type gas sensors with combined yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) as the base solid electrolyte material and various classes of electrode materials for their potential utilization as a high-performance sensing electrode. The underlying sensing mechanism of a mixed-potential type YSZ-based sensor is elaborated here in detail. Transformation in design and configuration of this type of sensor is also covered in this report. In addition, recent progresses on mixed-potential type gas sensors development for detection of several target gases, such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, hydrogen, and ammonia, are reviewed. Strategies to improve the sensing characteristic, particularly gas sensitivity and selectivity, are also reported. Based on the understanding of the fundamental sensing mechanism and the requirements for high-performance gas sensors, challenges and future trends for this type of gas sensor development are discussed. Abstract: When experiments are conducted on the effects of freestream turbulence on the flow around bluff structures, generation of both high-intensity and large-scale turbulence in a wind tunnel is of major importance. We attempt this by developing a new type of wind tunnel named 'multi-fan wind tunnel' (MFWT), wherein airflow is driven by multiple fans. We focus on the use of shear layers generated between the outflows from adjacent ducts. Herein, we propose an efficient driving method in which an input signal composed of numerous sinusoidal waves is fed to each fan with quasi-random phases ('random-phase mode'). It was confirmed that this mode generates approximately homogeneous turbulence within a short downstream distance. We found that pulsatile components were eliminated, which prevented the development of turbulence in our preceding experiments using the MFWT. The initial rectangular spectrum provided by forcing rapidly changes its shape as turbulence convects downstream, and asymptotes to a typical broad spectrum including a few decades of -5/3 power law. The intensity and the integral scale can be controlled by the amplitude of the input signal, and for an approximately isotropic region at large downstream stations, the intensity reaches 12-16% and the integral scale 0.6-0.7 m.Graphical abstract: [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wood degradation by insects plays important roles for the forest matter cycling. Since wood is deficient in nitrogen compared to the insect body, wood-feeding insects need to assimilate the nitrogen selectively and discard an excess carbon. Such a stoichiometric imbalance between food and body will cause high metabolic cost; therefore, wood-feeding insects may somehow alleviate the stoichiometric imbalance. Here, we investigated the carbon and nitrogen budgets of the larvae of stag beetle, Dorcus rectus, which feed on decaying wood. Assimilation efficiency of ingested wood was 22%, and those values based on the carbon and nitrogen were 27 and 45%, respectively, suggesting the selective digestion of nitrogen in wood. Element-based gross growth efficiency was much higher for nitrogen (45%) than for carbon (3%). As a result, the larvae released 24% of the ingested carbon as volatile, whereas almost no gaseous exchange was observed for nitrogen. Moreover, solubility-based elementary analysis revealed that the larvae mainly utilized alkaline-soluble-water-insoluble fraction of wood, which is rich in nitrogen. Actually, the midgut of the larvae was highly alkaline (pH 10.3). Stag beetle larvae are known to exhibit coprophagy, and here we also confirmed that alkaline-soluble-water-insoluble nitrogen increased again from fresh feces to old feces in the field. Stable isotope analysis suggested the utilization of aerial nitrogen by larvae; however, its actual contribution is still disputable. Those results suggest that D. rectus larvae selectively utilize alkaline-soluble nitrogenous substrates by using their highly alkaline midgut, and perhaps associate with microbes that enhance the nitrogen recycling in feces.
