Given the recent (since 9/11) widespread attention across academic disciplines paid to the theme of Empire, the author considers a primary question which emerges: What might we learn from and about the Bible which was composed in the context of Empire and has functioned in communities which both benefited from and suffered under imperial rule? Attention is given to critical 're-readings' of the New Testament in light of the reality of the Roman Empire and its overriding, pervasive imperial rule. Consideration is given to the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed (325/381 B.C.E.) and Christology for 'hidden transcripts' of the radical alternative message of the Gospel vis-à-vis the power of emperor and Empire. The carbonate factories, their controlling factors and their palaeoecological and sedimentological signals recorded in sedimentary successions are key elements for understanding the evolution of carbonate platform systems. Luis Pomar has dedicated most of his academic life to the study of carbonate rocks and carbonate factories. The idea for this special issue to celebrate Pomar's career arose during a session at the 34th International Association of Sedimentologists meeting held in Rome, entitled 'Understanding carbonate factories through palaeoecological and geochemical signals'. The proposal encountered great response among participants, and additional contributions followed an email invitation to other specialists. This issue contains a variety of papers on carbonate sedimentology and carbonate factories. Here, an introduction that contextualizes the papers and key concepts discussed in this thematic issue is provided. It reviews Luis Pomar's major achievements in carbonate sedimentology and discusses the evolution of the concept of the carbonate factory and the series of palaeoecological and sedimentological signals used to characterize the wide spectrum of carbonate depositional systems found in the natural world. This special issue is the second one drawn from the Global Symposium on Soil Erosion (GSER, May 15–17, 2019, Rome, Italy) and includes contributions dealing with the second theme of the GSER: Policies and practices in action to address soil erosion. While there is a good scientific understanding of the physical measures that can be used to prevent or mitigate soil erosion, the main constraints to progress often relate to policy development and or implementation as well as socio‐economic aspects that provide limitations to the implementation of sustainable soil management (SSM) practices including those directed to control erosion. There are no right or wrong answers to which policy or approach is most effective. Some combination of approaches needs to be adopted that work in the particular political, cultural, and socio‐economic environment under consideration. The papers included in this special issue provide examples, from the national to a local level that could be adapted, or used, to improve uptake and implementation of SSM practices to prevent or reduce soil erosion. Regardless of what policy or plan is developed, there has to be effective interaction with the local farmers and land managers as they are the key to implementing any actions that will make a practical difference on the ground. Effective policies cannot be developed or implemented without bringing the land managers 'on board' and the needs and limitations of the local farmers must be thoroughly understood and considered in any policy or plan development. This paper presents a wavelet‐based analysis of ionospheric irregularities induced by three different geomagnetic storms of varying strength and interplanetary origin over three mid‐latitudes stations, viz. Moscow, Fairford, and Rome. We observed the highest decrease in ionospheric variables (foF2, total electron content (TEC), and NmF2) during the negative phase of the G4 storm. Interestingly, hmF2 exhibits the opposite trend in terms of variation. The maximum ionization height (hmF2) for the G4 event is 500 km (during the main phase) and 150 km (during the recovery phase). Within 2–3 hr of the G4 event, the value of hmF2 is found to decline by 70%. The largest reduction (80%) in critical frequency (foF2) is observed during the negative phase of this event, which is also confirmed by the continuous wavelet transform results. During the negative phase, we observed noticeable power shifts in the signal of the ionospheric parameters toward the lower Fourier period band. During the G4 storm—Particularly during the negative phase—The lowest power linked with the ionospheric parameter's signal was discovered. Additionally, we used detrended cross‐correlation analysis to investigate the correlation and time lag between geomagnetic indices (Symmetric H‐component (SYM‐H) & auroral electrojet) and ionospheric parameters (foF2, NmF2, hmF2 & TEC). The significant association between SYM‐H and ionospheric parameters suggests that the magnetosphere‐ionosphere interaction produces intense electric field disturbances and winds in the mid‐latitudes, resulting in the perturbation of hmF2, foF2, TEC, and NmF2. Studies on delegation to international organizations have extensively examined the determinants of supranational delegation. Yet, systematic empirical accounts on the effects of different types and degrees of delegation on policy developments remain limited. This paper addresses this gap by using a novel dataset that combines delegation data from the Treaty of Rome with data on legislation and case law developed by the European authorities (1958–2000). The analysis produces three findings. First, a higher level of delegation of legislative and executive functions has a positive effect on the volume of secondary legislation, but no effect on the volume of case law. Second, a higher level of judicial delegation has a positive effect on the volume of case law, while limiting legislative activity. Third, the precision of the Treaty provisions constrains the volume of secondary legislation. This paper presents a study carried out on the painted altarpiece preserved inside the Basilica of Santa Maria in Cosmedin, Rome, by combining three imaging techniques operating in the near‐ and mid‐infrared spectral ranges. The altarpiece has several pictorial layers and restorations, which have superimposed over time for stylistic adjustment and conservative purposes up to its present appearance. The results obtained in this study enable the detection of damage to the wooden support and the identification of pictorial features buried beneath the visible paint layer, thus providing significant information on the historical and artistic characterization of the artefact. Summary: Geotagged data gathered from social media can be used to discover places‐of‐interest (PoIs) that have attracted many visitors. Since a PoI is generally identified by geographical coordinates of a single point, it is hard to match it with people trajectories. Therefore, we define an area, called region‐of‐interest (RoI), represented by the boundaries of a PoI. The main goal of this study is to discover RoIs from PoIs using spatial data mining techniques. In this paper, we propose a new parallel method for extracting RoIs from social media datasets. It consists of two main steps: (i) automatic keyword extraction and data grouping and (ii) parallel RoI extraction. The first step extracts keywords identifying the PoIs; these keywords are used to group social media items according to the places they refer to. The second step uses a Parallel Clustering Approach (ParCA) of spatial dataset to identify RoIs. ParCA exploits a parallel execution of DBSCAN on subsets of data to generate subclusters on each processing node and then merge overlapping subclusters to form global clusters. ParCA was implemented using the MapReduce model. Experiments performed over a set of PoIs in the city of Rome using social media data show that our approach is highly scalable and reaches an accuracy of 79% in detecting RoIs. On a parallel computer with 50 cores, we obtained a speedup of 52 by processing large datasets divided into 32 splits, compared with the execution time registered when each dataset is not partitioned. This paper assesses the short‐ and long‐term economic impact of the 2000 Great Jubilee, the foremost Catholic event occurring every 25 years, on the city of Rome's economy. By applying the synthetic control approach, we find that the value added per capita increases slightly in the short term, whereas in the long term it is not significantly different from what it would have been if Rome had not hosted the Jubilee. However, we do find a significant effect on the employment rate. Consistent with these findings, we document a shift of the local economy toward less productive sectors, such as construction and services requiring lower skills, and an overall productivity loss with respect to the counterfactual scenario. The investment in infrastructure, facilities, and urban refurbishment did not significantly increase housing prices in the long term, with the exception of peripheral residential areas, which experienced an appreciation. The paper focuses on ceramic vessels unearthed from Copper Age necropolises located in the area of the modern city of Rome and commonly attributed to the Rinaldone culture. The peculiar vessels' shapes, mainly associated with the consumption of beverages, their accuracy of manufacture and the very low impact of these ceramic morphologies in the coeval household assemblages lead to the study of such an apparently selected production through a multidisciplinary research. Petrographic analysis, X‐ray fluorescence (XRF) and X‐ray diffraction (XRD) integrated with the analysis of manufacturing traces and X‐ray investigation suggest the transmission of technological choices, which remained unchanged over almost two millennia. The size, body conformation and skull shape of Roman dogs from the 'Vila de Madrid necropolis' site, where 1480 dog remains were recovered, are described in this paper to provide evidence of the morphometric variability of Roman dogs in Hispania Tarraconensis. The individualized and detailed morphometric analysis of 10 individuals shows that the proliferation and explosion of the morphological variability already documented in different regions of the Roman Empire (Italia, Gallia, Britannia, Pannonia) are also noted here. The presence of very different individuals in terms of their shape and size, similar to the differences that can at present be noted between Pekingese and Doberman dogs, has been documented at the site. The present study investigates the relation between urban form and the socio-economic patterns of the resident population in three southern European cities ( Athens, Lisbon and Rome) featured by different processes of urban diffusion. The paper goes beyond the literature on sprawl focused on (residential, income and ethnic) segregation and the different features of the inhabitants of the suburbs and those of the inner cities residents. By integrating multivariate statistics and spatial analysis, a methodology is proposed, based on morphological and socio-economic indicators available at a fine geographical scale. Results show how urban diffusion processes vary widely according to the context, as does the socio-economic profile of the actors, stressing the need to think about different 'southern European alternatives' of sprawl. With its wide geographical and chronological horizons, the so-called Fredegar Chronicle from the seventh century covers the Roman past and revives elements of the cultural heritage of Rome. This paper addresses the issue of ' Romanness after Rome' by analysing two elements of Roman culture important in the text: the architectural remnants of the empire and the tales that relate to a classical Roman tradition. Background: Using data from the Rome Foundation Global Epidemiology Study examining prevalence of disorders of gut–brain interaction (DGBI) in 33 countries, this study explored the prevalence of all 22 disorders in Canada. It examined differences related to geography and sociodemographic factors, health impact and compared these findings to other countries. Methods: The Rome Foundation survey was conducted through the Internet, targeting 2000 Canadian participants. The survey used the validated ROME IV diagnostic questionnaire to identify the 22 DGBI and an in‐depth supplemental questionnaire that included quality assurance techniques. Key Results: There were 2029 respondents with a mean age of 48 years and 50% females. Diagnostic criteria for at least one of the 22 DGBI were met by 41.3%, similar to other countries. Functional constipation, functional diarrhea, and unspecified functional bowel disorders were most common. Irritable bowel syndrome prevalence was 4.2% using Rome IV and 10.1% using ROME III criteria. DGBI were associated with poorer quality of life and increased psychological symptom scores. Prevalence of DGBI ranged from 48% in Quebec to 36% in British Columbia. Prescription pain medication was reported by 17% with DGBI compared to 9% without DGBI and correlated negatively with mental health and physical well‐being. Quebecers and francophones were in limited number but reported higher DGBI prevalence and symptom severity compared to others. Conclusions & Inferences: A large proportion of Canadians suffer from DGBI which seriously impact their well‐being. Background: The Rome Foundation carried out a worldwide epidemiology study on DGBI according to the Rome IV criteria in 33 countries, including Belgium. DGBI prevalence varied between continents and countries, but prevalence differences within language groups in a single country have not yet been described. Methods: We analyzed the prevalence rates of 18 DGBI and their psychosocial impact in Belgium in the French and Dutch language groups. Key Results: DGBI prevalence was similar in the French‐speaking and Dutch‐speaking population. Having one or more DGBI was negatively associated with psychosocial well‐being. The scores for depression were lower in the Dutch‐speaking participants with one or more DGBI compared to the French‐speaking participants. Interestingly, we also found significantly lower scores in the general Dutch‐speaking versus the French‐speaking population for depression and non‐gastrointesinal somatic symptoms, and higher global physical health and mental health quality‐of‐life component scores. In the Dutch‐speaking group, medication use for gastric acid was lower, but use of prescribed analgesics was more common. Nevertheless, the use of non‐prescribed pain medication was higher in the French‐speaking group. Anxiety and sleep medication use was also higher in the latter group. Conclusions & Interferences: The results of this first in‐depth analysis of Rome IV DGBI in Belgium show a higher prevalence for some DGBI in the French‐speaking cohort, and a larger associated disease burden. Background: The aim of the study was to assess sex‐ and gender‐related differences in the epidemiology and impact of disorders of gut–brain interaction (DGBI) in Poland. Methods: Data used for the current analysis were derived from the Polish population sample of 2057 subjects (1030 F, 1027 M) collected via the Internet survey that included the Rome IV diagnostic questionnaire and 80 supplementary questions. Key Results: The overall prevalence of DGBI in Poland was 46.0% (51.7% in women and 40.3% in men, p < 0.001). Comparing women versus men, esophageal disorders were observed in 6.3% vs. 6.0%, respectively (p > 0.05), gastroduodenal disorders in 14.0% vs. 7.8% (p < 0.001), bowel disorders in 44.3% vs. 33.9% (p < 0.001), and anorectal disorders in 9.9% vs. 7.7% (p > 0.05). The six most common DGBI included functional constipation 14.2%, functional dyspepsia 8.3%, proctalgia fugax 6.6%, functional bloating 4.8%, functional diarrhea 4.5%, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) 4.4%. All these disorders, except for functional diarrhea, were more common in women. The DGBI overlap was significantly higher in women than in men (16.7% vs. 11.2%, p < 0.001). A higher number of overlapping DGBI correlated positively with IBS severity, higher level of somatization, anxiety and depression, poorer quality of life (QoL), and increased healthcare utilization. Conclusions and Inferences: This is the first comprehensive report on significant sex/gender‐related differences in the prevalence and burden of DGBI in Poland. The revealed differences between women and men with DGBI in the clinical profile, psychosocial variables, and healthcare utilization may have important diagnostic and therapeutic implications. Background: In recent years, platelet‐rich plasma (PRP) has been used in plastic surgery, dermatology, and other treatment procedures worldwide. Since the number of scientific writings has been significantly increasing, it is challenging to generate a manual compilation and systematic review of PRP's therapeutic applications in dermatology and plastic surgeries. This study aimed to make a bibliometric analysis of the literature in the field and evaluate research hotspots and frontiers in this field in the past 20 years. Methods: Using the Academic Search Premier and ScienceDirect defined search terms, we searched the Web of Science Core Collection (WoSCC) and Scopus databases. All data were analyzed using CiteSpace 5.8.R3 and VOSviewer, including countries, institutions, authors, keywords, cited authors, cited journals, cited references, discovered research hotspots, and frontiers. Results: A total of 1931 studies were retrieved. The number of publications on PRP application in dermatology and plastic surgeries showed a yearly increase. The United States was the most significant contributor to this field, while Italy's contribution was noteworthy. The journal with the highest number of relevant articles in dermatology and plastic surgery included the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology. However, the Wound Repair and Regeneration and International Journal of Molecular Sciences were the leading journals that should be paid attention to in the future. Author Anitua E from the Tor Vergata University of Rome published the most publications in this field. In the keyword co‐occurrence analysis, all keywords were divided into six clusters, and the most common one in recent years was "PRP for facial beauty." Facial rejuvenation, scar, and alopecia were the main hotspots and research trends in this field. Conclusions: Based on the current global trends, the use of PRP in cosmetics and skin care is receiving increasing attention from researchers and clinicians. Recently, an increasing number of articles on PRP's application in skin tissue repair have been published in the United States and Italy. The number of studies on hair loss, facial rejuvenation, and scar management is increasing, suggesting that these subjects may become research hotspots for PRP in dermatology and cosmetic surgeries in recent years. Human activities severely affect aquatic ecosystems: the lockdown restrictions due to SARS‐CoV‐2 (COVID‐19) have proved that reducing anthropogenic activities can positively influence the environment and mitigate atmospheric pollution. In addition, studies on aquatic ecosystems have highlighted the decrease in suspended matter and pollutant concentrations associated with reduced marine transport and industrial activities. We evaluated the effects of the reduction of anthropogenic activities in highly impacted water ecosystems. Three of the sampling sites were on the Tiber River's lower stretch close to the urban area of Rome (Italy), and the other two were transitional waters located in the southern Latium region coastal area. These sampling sites have been studied by our research group for at least 20 years. The present study involved analysis of chemical and physicochemical parameters, biological communities, and land use. Microbiological fecal indicators and Salmonella spp. were also analyzed. There were two sampling campaigns, the first one in May 2020 (ID II) at the end of lockdown measures, and the second one a year later, in June 2021 (ID III). The data were compared with our old data, collected from 2002 to 2015 (ID I), to evaluate the potential effects of the restrictive measures. Biotic communities were dominated by pollution‐tolerant taxa, indicating eutrophication and organic pollution. Furthermore, the high concentrations of microbiological indicators was mainly due to sewage from the urban area. The results of the research indicated no significant changes from past years (ID I) to 2020 (ID II) and 2021 (ID III). In conclusion, the restrictions adopted in Italy during the pandemic period were not sufficient to mitigate the heavy pressure of urbanization and agriculture that have long affected the studied aquatic ecosystems. More than half of the world's population lives in urban areas, a proportion that is expected to increase. Even if urbanisation is widely regarded as a major threat to global biodiversity, recent research highlighted the potential ecological importance of cities for pollinators. Key determinants of cities' ability to sustain pollinators are the presence of green areas and the connectivity between them. However, also temperature is expected to be of primary importance for pollinator activities.Here, we aimed at disentangling the effects of temperature, open habitat cover, and distance from the city centre on wild bee communities in the city of Rome (Italy). We selected 36 sites along two statistically independent gradients of temperature and open habitat cover, and we sampled wild bee communities using pan‐traps for 4 months. Then, we measured functional traits of wild bee species, that is, body size, social behaviour, nesting strategy, and diet breadth.Temperature emerged as the main driver of wild bee communities, with communities richer in species and individuals at warmer temperatures. We found little species replacement between cold and warm sites. In addition, with increasing temperatures, bee communities were dominated by polylectic and small‐bodied species.Here, we showed that in a highly urbanised environment, temperature shapes pollinator communities irrespective of other landscape metrics. Even if warming seemed beneficial for urban pollinator abundance and richness, it might strongly homogenise bee communities by selecting for those traits that make species more easily adaptable. Background: Previously, we used latent class analysis (LCA) to identify novel subgroups in people with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). There are four other functional bowel disorders that, although characterized as discrete disorders, overlap considerably with, and fluctuate to, IBS. These might instead be conceptualized as a milder form of IBS. We explored this hypothesis using LCA in a cohort of people with non‐IBS functional bowel disorders. Methods: We collected demographic, symptom, and psychological health data from 1375 adults in the community who self‐identified as having IBS and identified individuals meeting Rome IV criteria for any non‐IBS functional bowel disorder. We performed LCA to identify specific subgroups (clusters). We followed participants up at 12 months to reassess gastrointestinal and psychological heath and also gather data about healthcare utilization and impact of symptoms. Key results: 811 people met Rome IV criteria for IBS and 558 Rome IV criteria for another functional bowel disorder (76 (5.5%) functional constipation; 198 (14.5%) functional diarrhea; 129 (9.5%) functional abdominal bloating or distension; and 155 (11.4%) unspecified functional bowel disorder). LCA in these 558 people identified five clusters defined by a combination of gastrointestinal symptoms and the extent of psychological co‐morbidity. However, correlation between these clusters and the Rome IV functional bowel disorder diagnoses was poor and 75% of people were classified as having mild IBS using our previous IBS‐derived model. By 12 months, one‐third of people had fluctuated and met criteria for IBS. Clusters with high psychological burden had a poorer prognosis, with higher rates of medical consultation, medication use, and greater impact of symptoms on daily life. Conclusions and inferences: The functional bowel disorders may be better characterized as a spectrum of IBS rather than separate disorders. Heroin, a semisynthetic opioid drug synthesized from morphine, is the 3,6‐diacetyl ester of morphine (diacetylmorphine). The post‐mortem diagnosis of heroin‐related death could be an issue and usually rely on a combination of investigations, including the autopsy, histological and toxicological analysis. We conducted the present study to evaluate the correlation between the heroin concentration in biological fluids (peripheral blood, bile and urine) and the post‐mortem anti‐6‐MAM antibody expression in various tissues (brain, heart, lung, liver and kidney) using immunohistochemical staining. A quantitative analysis of the immunohistochemical reaction was carried out. 45 cases of heroin‐related death investigated at the Forensic Pathology Institutes of the University of Rome, Foggia and Pisa were included. The control group was composed of 15 cases of death due to other causes, without brain lesions and negative toxicological analysis for drugs. We found a positive immunohistochemical reaction in different organs and it was related to the timing of heroin metabolization. No reaction was found in the control group. Our findings show that immunohistochemistry can be a valuable tool for the post‐mortem diagnosis of acute heroin abuse. A better understanding of the timing of heroin's metabolism can be useful in the forensic field and for future therapeutic applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Pediatric Rome IV criteria are used to diagnose childhood functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs). This study of pediatric gastroenterology physicians measured their agreement in (1) Making a pediatric Rome IV FGID diagnosis; and (2) Diagnostic testing for patients with FGIDs. Methods: Pediatric gastroenterologists and pediatric gastroenterology fellows at two medical centers completed a survey containing clinical FGID vignettes. For each vignette, raters identified the most likely Rome IV diagnosis(es) and selected which diagnostic test(s) (if any) they typically would obtain. The survey was re‐administered within 3 months. Inter‐rater and intra‐rater weighted percent agreement was determined. Linear mixed modeling identified sources of variability in diagnostic testing. Key Results: Thirty‐four raters completed the initial survey of whom thirty‐one (91%) completed the repeat survey. Overall inter‐rater agreement on Rome IV diagnoses was 68% for initial and repeat surveys whereas intra‐rater agreement was 76%. In contrast, overall inter‐rater agreement on diagnostic testing was <30% for both initial and repeat surveys and intra‐rater agreement was only 57%. Between‐physician differences accounted for 43% of the variability in the number of tests selected. Rater identified use of Rome criteria in clinical practice was associated with 1.1 fewer diagnostic tests on average (95% CI 0.2–2.0, p = 0.015). Higher intra‐rater agreement was noted for diagnostic testing in faculty when compared to fellows (p = 0.009). Conclusions & Inferences: In a multicenter evaluation among pediatric gastroenterology physicians, pediatric Rome IV diagnostic agreement was higher than that reported for previous Rome versions, and higher than agreement on diagnostic testing. Background: Data for Israel from the Rome Foundation Global Epidemiology Study on the disorders of gut‐brain interaction (DGBI) were used to assess the national prevalence of all 22 DGBI, the percentage of respondents meeting diagnostic criteria for at least one DGBI, and the impact on burden of disease in Israel. Methods: The survey was conducted through the Internet with multiple built‐in quality‐assurance techniques and included the Rome IV diagnostic questionnaire and an in‐depth supplemental questionnaire. Key Results: 2012 Israeli participants completed the survey nationwide: mean age 44.6 ± 16.4 years, 50% females. The national distribution was very close to the latest Israeli census. 36.4% (95% CI 34.3, 38.4) met diagnostic criteria for at least one DGBI, with 4.4% for any esophageal disorder, 6.5% for any gastroduodenal disorder, 30.8% for any bowel disorder, and 5.3% for any anorectal disorder. The rates were higher for women. Having any DGBI was associated negatively with psychosocial variables (including quality of life, somatization, and concern about digestive problems), and healthcare utilization (including doctor visits, use of medications, and abdominal surgeries). Conclusions & Inferences: The results of this study provide the first in‐depth assessment of the prevalence and burden of Rome IV DGBI in Israel and facilitate comparisons with other countries. As 36.4% of the 2,012 participants met diagnostic criteria for at least one DGBI, and 23.5% of those met criteria for more than one DGBI, the burden of DGBI in Israel is high, indicating a need to focus on research and training for patient care. Convective aggregation refers to the clustering of convective events and occurs on a wide range of spatial scales. It has been suggested that the behavior of convective aggregation may change under global warming, with potential implications for future changes in precipitation extremes. Here, convective regions of the tropics are defined from a percentile threshold on gridded daily precipitation data and used to quantify large‐scale convective aggregation in an ensemble of global climate models. Applying three separate indices for aggregation, it is found that large‐scale convective aggregation increases in 17 of the 19 analyzed models under future warming. However, aggregation is found not to be correlated with tropical‐mean precipitation extremes, either climatologically or with respect to the sensitivity to warming. The large model spread in aggregation indices across the ensemble suggests the possible utility of large‐scale convective aggregation as a target for model evaluation. Plain Language Summary: Rainfall in the tropics is not evenly distributed, rather it occurs in clusters of clouds of various sizes and shapes, from a line of thunderstorms to "superclusters" spanning thousands of km. The size and spatial distribution of these clusters are hypothesized to influence the frequency and intensity of heavy rainfall in the tropics. In this study, we develop a method for quantifying the amount of clustering in the tropics, and we investigate whether it is projected to change in the future in a suite of state‐of‐the‐art climate models. Almost all the models project increases in clustering in the future, but, surprisingly, a model's projection of clustering does not seem to affect its projection of changes to heavy rainfall. The results suggest that effects other than clustering play a dominant role in determining the range of heavy rainfall outcomes projected by climate models. Background: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)‐type symptoms are common in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), but few studies have examined the prevalence and impact of IBS‐type symptoms in IBD according to Rome IV criteria. Methods: We collected demographic, symptom (Rome III, Rome IV, and clinical disease activity indices), psychological (anxiety, depression, and somatization), and quality of life data from 973 IBD patients. Medical records were reviewed to document disease type, extent/location, behavior, medical therapy, and antidepressant or opioid use. We compared characteristics of individuals with no IBS‐type symptoms, Rome III IBS‐type symptoms, and Rome IV IBS‐type symptoms. Key Results: In total, 302 (31.0%) patients met the Rome III criteria for IBS, and 172 (17.7%) met Rome IV criteria. Those with IBS‐type symptoms were younger, more likely to be female, and had higher rates of antidepressant (p = 0.006) or opioid use (p = 0.001). Rome IV IBS‐type symptoms were associated with symptoms of mood disorders, flare of disease activity, and lower quality of life scores (p < 0.001 for all analyses). Compared with Rome III criteria, those with Rome IV IBS‐type symptoms had significantly higher rates of anxiety (p < 0.001), depression (p = 0.002), and somatization (p < 0.001), lower quality of life scores (p < 0.001) and were more likely to have CD (p = 0.011), with ileal distribution (p = 0.006). Conclusions and Inferences: Rome IV IBS‐type symptoms are associated with increased psychological co‐morbidity, lower quality of life scores, and higher rates of antidepressant or opioid use. Abstract: Based on interviews with activists and local government officials and on secondary data, this paper analyzes the development and effects of the Roman Right to Inhabit Movement (RIM) from its origins till 2014. The first section describes the origins and characteristics of the new housing question in Rome. The second presents a brief genealogy of the RIM, paying special attention to how it has framed the housing question. The third describes the activities of the RIM by focusing on its interplay with the city politics and administration and the resulting changes in the housing policy of the city of Rome. The fourth section analyzes the modes of state regulation and of political articulation of the housing question that these transformations have brought about. The final section argues that these emerging arrangements are a significant example of how new forms of social protection are being created by urban movements after the neoliberal erosion of the welfare mechanisms. Background: Abdominal pain is a bothersome and lifestyle limiting symptom in patients with functional bowel disorders. It is associated with decreased quality of life in affected individuals, as well as significant annual healthcare expenditure. Knowledge of specific factors that predict improvement in abdominal pain in those with functional bowel disorders is thus far limited. Methods: Consecutive patients presenting for outpatient care at a major academic medical center between October 2017 and March 2020 completed an electronic symptom survey prior to initial clinic visit, and again after 3 months. The Rome IV questionnaires for functional dyspepsia, irritable bowel syndrome, functional constipation, and functional diarrhea were all included. Additionally, all subjects completed the Patient Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System Anxiety, Depression, and sleep disturbance questionnaires. Patients with a diagnosis of a Rome IV functional gastrointestinal disorder without any organic cause for symptoms were identified based on both chart review as well as survey response data. Univariable and multivariable analysis was used to assess predictors of improved abdominal pain after 3 months. Key Results: 180 patients with a mean age of 45.3 years were included in the final analysis. 78.3% of patients were female, and 77.2% met Rome IV criteria for irritable bowel syndrome. On multivariable analysis, improvement in constipation and diarrhea were both independent predictors of improved abdominal pain after 3 months. Conclusions and Inferences: Improvement in constipation and diarrhea both predicted improvement in abdominal pain, suggesting that addressing these factors is central to the management of abdominal pain in functional gastrointestinal disorders. Background and Aim: Because acute infectious gastroenteritis may cause post‐infection irritable bowel syndrome and functional dyspepsia and the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus‐2 affects gastrointestinal (GI) tract, coronavirus disease‐19 (COVID‐19) may cause post‐infection‐functional GI disorders (FGIDs). We prospectively studied the frequency and spectrum of post‐infection‐FGIDs among COVID‐19 and historical healthy controls and the risk factors for its development. Methods: Two hundred eighty patients with COVID‐19 and 264 historical healthy controls were followed up at 1 and 3 months using translated validated Rome Questionnaires for the development of chronic bowel dysfunction (CBD), dyspeptic symptoms, and their overlap and at 6‐month for IBS, uninvestigated dyspepsia (UD) and their overlap. Psychological comorbidity was studied using Rome III Psychosocial Alarm Questionnaire. Results: At 1 and 3 months, 16 (5.7%), 16 (5.7%), 11 (3.9%), and 24 (8.6%), 6 (2.1%), 9 (3.2%) of COVID‐19 patients developed CBD, dyspeptic symptoms, and their overlap, respectively; among healthy controls, none developed dyspeptic symptoms and one developed CBD at 3 months (P < 0.05). At 6 months, 15 (5.3%), 6 (2.1%), and 5 (1.8%) of the 280 COVID‐19 patients developed IBS, UD, and IBS‐UD overlap, respectively, and one healthy control developed IBS at 6 months (P < 0.05 for all except IBS‐UD overlap). The risk factors for post‐COVID‐19 FGIDs at 6 months included symptoms (particularly GI), anosmia, ageusia, and presence of CBD, dyspeptic symptoms, or their overlap at 1 and 3 months and the psychological comorbidity. Conclusions: This is the first study showing COVID‐19 led to post‐COVID‐19 FGIDs. Post‐COVID‐19 FGIDs may pose a significant economic, social, and healthcare burden to the world. Archaic Roman painted antefixes, architectural slabs and louteria from the Palatine Hill in Rome, Italy, were studied by non‐destructive and micro‐destructive methods: Portable X‐ray fluorescence (XRF), micro‐Raman spectroscopy, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy with energy‐dispersive spectroscopy (SEM‐EDS) and X‐ray diffraction (XRD). The investigation enabled the characterization of raw materials and ceramic technology, providing insights on provenance. In fact, similarities were recognized with terracottas from the neighbouring Etruscan Veii. The analysis of pictorial layers revealed the use of Fe‐ and Mn‐based pigments, as well as the identification of more precious pigments on worthy pieces. Urban rivers may perform important ecological roles and provide many ecosystem services, especially in urban contexts. Considering this, River Contracts were officially introduced in 2000, during the Second Forum of the World Water Council, as participative agreements aimed at managing the complexity of fluvial ecosystems. Collecting data on fluvial and riparian biodiversity, establishing ecological relationships among biological components, and evaluating their resistance and resilience to anthropic impacts are needed to assess the ecological sustainability of the anthropic actions. Here, we provide a review of literature and regulation on River Contracts, and a methodological contribution to the evaluation of different environmental components, their ecological connections, and the role of anthropic impacts. To address the aim, we performed a critical analysis of the existing data on the Tiber River close to Rome. We used the information to identify the actions that should be included in the Tiber River Contract to improve its natural value and its potential ecosystem services. Several areas emerged where information was lacking such as the human impact on these ecosystems. Data highlight the disappearance of rare Mediterranean species and of those linked to wetland habitats, as well as an increase in alien species and species typical of disturbed areas. The Rome Foundation embarked on an ambitious multi‐year, multinational population‐based study to evaluate the prevalence of Rome IV‐defined DGBI and their biopsychosocial impact on a worldwide scale. The consistency of the study findings attests to the scientific rigor of this effort, as evident in the publications that resulted from this international study. Dr. Sperber and colleagues report a subanalysis on the Rome IV Global Epidemiology internet survey of the 2012 adults in Israel. These data determined the national prevalence of Rome IV‐defined DGBIs, and their associated healthcare utilization and sociodemographic and psychosocial variables. Importantly, they also permitted seamless comparison of the data in the rest of the world. The Israeli study highlights some of the strengths of the Global Epidemiology Study: the 2 respondents had a geographical spread representative of the country. The questionnaire in Israel was available to the participants online in four different languages used by the population in Israel: The database of the study is now available through the Rome Foundation Research Institute for use by academic and industry researchers. Background: Pollen food allergy syndrome (PFAS) is a frequently underdiagnosed disease due to diverse triggers, clinical presentations, and test results. This is especially relevant in geographic areas with a broad spectrum of pollen sensitization, such as Southern Europe. Objectives: To elucidate similarities and differences of PFAS in nine Southern European centers and identify associated characteristics and unique markers of PFAS. Methods: As part of the @IT.2020 Multicenter Study, 815 patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR), aged 10–60 years, were recruited in seven countries. They completed questionnaires regarding SAR, comorbidities, family history, and PFAS, and underwent skin prick testing (SPT) and serum IgE testing. Results: Of the 815 patients, 167 (20.5%) reported PFAS reactions. Most commonly, eliciting foods were kiwi (58, 34.7%), peach (43, 25.7%), and melon (26, 15.6%). Reported reactions were mostly local (216/319, 67.7%), occurring within 5 min of contact with elicitors (209/319, 65.5%). Associated characteristics included positive IgE to at least one panallergen (profilin, PR‐10, or nsLTP) (p = 0.007), maternal PFAS (OR: 3.716, p = 0.026), and asthma (OR: 1.752, p = 0.073). Between centers, heterogeneity in prevalence (Marseille: 7.5% vs. Rome: 41.4%, p < 0.001) and of clinical characteristics was apparent. Cypress played a limited role, with only 1/22 SPT mono‐sensitized patients reporting a food reaction (p < 0.073). Conclusions: PFAS is a frequent comorbidity in Southern European SAR patients. Significant heterogeneity of clinical characteristics in PFAS patients among the centers was observed and may be related to the different pollen sensitization patterns in each geographic area. Architected materials can exhibit mechanical properties that do not occur with ordinary solids. By integrating hierarchy and size effects, microarchitected metamaterials fabricated by two‐photon lithography with a metallic or ceramic coating can be ultrastrong but lightweight. However, the attainment of both strength and ductility is generally mutually exclusive. Inspired by the Pantheon dome in Rome, which can withstand high load while keeping low density, microarchitected domes with a gradient helix are designed and deposited in a hierarchical nanostructured aluminum film with ultrahigh strength and considerable plasticity. Despite having a thick coating, which usually causes catastrophic collapse, the thick‐walled metallic dome shows recoverability during compression. The compressive strength increases to 73 times that of current ductile‐like microlattices, leading to the metamaterial occupying the domain of the material property space that is hitherto empty. Detailed in situ experimental and computational work reveals the graceful (noncatastrophic) failure due to the helical twisting and plastic flow in the supra‐nanomaterial. It is a promising method of suppressing brittle failure via a combination of architectural and material design. Recently, an oil‐on‐panel painting, portraying Leonardo da Vinci, was found in the monastery of Camaldoli (Arezzo, Italy). The painting comes from a private donation and, over time, it never was moved from the monastery or loaned to museums or art galleries for exhibitions. Historians hypothesise that the painting could be a seventeenth‐century copy of a portrait or a self‐portrait of Leonardo da Vinci. Although, almost certainly, the panel was not signed by Leonardo, it raised a great interest for art experts, since the copy could be the outstanding testimony left to us of an original Leonardo's masterpiece, which is gone lost. The ICRCPAL in Rome, in collaboration with the ISPC‐CNR and the INFN‐LNS of Catania, started a scientific investigation of the painting based on the use of non‐invasive techniques. Macro X‐ray fluorescence imaging technique (MA‐XRF) was employed to document, for the first time, the nature of original pigments composing the pictorial and priming layers. The results allowed to better elucidate the painting technique, also to know the original look of degraded areas, suggesting an appropriate restoration and conservation policy. Novel information has been obtained concerning the pictorial process, since elemental distribution maps revealed an underpainting below the Leonardo portrait. Despite the cleaning process of the panel before its reuse, some pictorial details remained visible to the MA‐XRF analysis, allowing to infer the presumed figure hidden behind the figure of Leonardo. Summary: The article traces the development of Mediterranean silver production from the Iron Age to the time of Rome, focusing on the site of Antas, Sardinia. Antas is located in a rich metalliferous area, which served as a source of lead and silver beyond the regional level. The article takes data on the exploitation of metal resources as a gauge for Mediterranean developments, especially state formation and the rise in maritime connectivity. Sardinian Bronze Age chiefdoms seem not to have mined the local argentiferous ore. But studies of lead isotopes suggest that Iron Age chiefdoms began to do so in response to Phoenician demand. Metal extraction intensified under Carthaginian rule, reaching a peak under the Roman Empire. In addition, at Antas the Carthaginians initiated religious practices, which the Romans continued. The construction of new kerbs or the replacement of existing ones is usually due to the need of installing safety or anti‐noise barriers. A suitable experimental survey has been studied and developed at the Laboratory of the University of Rome "Tor Vergata" aiming at verifying the vulnerability of the system kerb safety barrier in a bridge deck. The main scope is the analysis, through full‐scale experimental tests, of the system performances under horizontal actions simulating the vehicle derailment. Particular care has been devoted in reproducing actual geometries and materials. Furthermore, the actual elements usually installed in Italian infrastructures (roadways and highways), are adopted, in order to highlight the true damage typologies and failure modes. Both the cases of application of barriers on existing and new cast kerbs are analyzed, and two kerbs geometries, generally found in Italian bridges are cast and tested. A gas blowout during an unauthorized well drilling occurred on June 9, 2020 at the Rome‐Ciampino boundary at the periphery of Colli Albani quiescent volcano. This zone hosts a shallow confined gas‐pressured aquifer, which recently produced further three gas blowouts. Dangerous atmospheric CO2 and H2S concentrations killed some birds, and 12 families were evacuated. The helium isotopic composition indicates that the gas has a magmatic origin. It rises toward the surface along leaky faults, pressurizing the shallow confined aquifer and creating a permanent gas blowout hazard. Colli Albani volcano is characterized by anomalous uplift, release of magmatic gas, and episodic seismic crises. Should a volcanic unrest occur, gas hazard would increase in this densely inhabited zone of Rome city, as the input of magmatic gas into the confined aquifer might create overpressure conditions leading to a harmful phreatic explosion, or increase the emission of hazardous gas through newly created fractures. Its south‐eastern part hosts a shallow confined gas‐pressurized aquifer, which can produce a gas blowout, that is, a sudden persistent emission of gas and nebulized water, when reached by drillings. Italy was one of the most affected nations by coronavirus disease 2019 outside China. The infections, initially limited to Northern Italy, spread to all other Italian regions. This study aims to provide a snapshot of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus‐2 (SARS‐CoV‐2) epidemiology based on a single‐center laboratory experience in Rome. The study retrospectively included 6565 subjects tested for SARS‐CoV‐2 at the Laboratory of Virology of Sapienza University Hospital in Rome from 6 March to 4 May. A total of 9995 clinical specimens were analyzed, including nasopharyngeal swabs, bronchoalveolar lavage fluids, gargle lavages, stools, pleural fluids, and cerebrospinal fluids. Positivity to SARS‐CoV‐2 was detected in 8% (527/6565) of individuals, increased with age, and was higher in male patients (P <.001). The number of new confirmed cases reached a peak on 18 March and then decreased. The virus was detected in respiratory samples, in stool and in pleural fluids, while none of gargle lavage or cerebrospinal fluid samples gave a positive result. This analysis allowed to gather comprehensive information on SARS‐CoV‐2 epidemiology in our area, highlighting positivity variations over time and in different sex and age group and the need for a continuous surveillance of the infection, mostly because the pandemic evolution remains unknown. Hospital staff are at the frontline in the COVID‐19 outbreak. The stressors they experience may induce sleep problems in a population already at risk. Sleep deprivation, long shifts and insomnia in hospital staff have been associated with individual, organizational and public health hazards. These include increased risk of mental and somatic disorders, altered immune responses, medical errors, misunderstandings, drowsy driving and burnout. In March 2020, the World Health Organization called for providing access to mental health and counselling for health professionals involved in the COVID‐19 outbreak. To answer this call, we propose practical advice for the management of sleep problems (sleep deprivation, insomnia and shift work) that can be included in supportive interventions. The advice is based on psychobiological principles of sleep regulation and on guidelines for the treatment of insomnia and was implemented within an initiative offering psychological support to the staff of three university hospitals in Rome. Background: Individuals with hypermobility spectrum disorders/hypermobile Ehlers‐Danlos syndrome (HSD/hEDS) frequently fulfill criteria for Rome IV functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGIDs). Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is also commonly reported in HSD/hEDS and may impact on co‐morbidity with and severity of FGIDs, although this remains to be studied. We determined the impact of concomitant POTS and HSD/hEDS on their association with Rome IV FGIDs. Methods: With the help of the charity organization Ehlers‐Danlos Support UK, an online cross‐sectional health survey was completed by individuals with HSD/hEDS. The survey enquired for (a) self‐reported doctor diagnosis of POTS, chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia, (b) the presence and symptom frequency of Rome IV FGIDs, and (c) anxiety and depression scores. Key Results: Of 616 subjects with HSD/hEDS, 37.5% reported a doctor diagnosis of POTS. POTS‐positive individuals were significantly younger than POTS‐negative subjects (37 vs 40 years, P = 0.002), more likely to report chronic fatigue syndrome (44% vs 31%, P < 0.0001), and showed a trend toward increased prevalence of fibromyalgia (44% vs 37%, P = 0.06) and higher depression score (P = 0.07). POTS‐positive subjects were also more likely to fulfill criteria for Rome IV FGIDs across various organ domains and experienced both upper and lower gastrointestinal symptoms significantly more frequently. The increased associations for FGIDs and GI symptom frequency remained unchanged in HSD/hEDS subjects with POTS following adjustments for age, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, and depression scores. Conclusions and Inferences: The high FGID burden in HSD/hEDS is further amplified in the presence of POTS. A sequence of consensus‐based Rome criteria for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) has been published since 1989. The fundamental definition based on abdominal pain in association with bowel dysfunction has been consistent. However, two major changes occurred in the Rome II and IV criteria. The former change involved "splitting off" of symptoms that were not consistently associated with pain, such as functional, constipation, diarrhea, and bloating. In Rome IV, the main changes were the exclusion of discomfort (in contrast to pain) and the more stringent frequency criteria for the pain to be eligible for diagnosis of IBS (specifically, on average, at least 1 day per week in the last 3 months). Validation studies of the consensus, symptom‐based criteria have identified multiple deficiencies that question the rationale for "splitting" the different syndromes, and favor a simpler identification of the classical symptoms of abdominal pain, bowel dysfunction, and bloating, and exclusion of alarm symptoms. Advances in the identification of actionable biomarkers related to the symptoms suggestive of functional gastrointestinal disorders have the potential to usher a change in practice from positive diagnosis of symptom complexes followed by empirical treatment to identification of the mechanisms causing the symptoms and targeted therapy. Ion beam analysis (IBA) and macro X‐ray fluorescence (MA‐XRF) spectroscopy are remarkable tools to obtain information about elemental composition and imaging of historical artefacts with a non‐invasive character. These investigation techniques were employed in the framework of a project aimed at supporting the characterization of materials and techniques related with the Roman wall painting. The archaeological excavations at Villa della Piscina in Rome have revealed a luxury building with a large pool (about 50 m long) and thermal baths and numerous fragments of plaster, coming from intentional demolitions referable to two distinct architectural contexts of the Villa during the imperial age, have been found. This work deals with studying the interesting wall pictorial apparatus of great cultural value of the heritage inherited from the Roman age in the area of the ancient city of Rome. The colour palette of the pigments investigated, in particular, by MA‐XRF and particle‐induced X‐ray emission (PIXE) and has revealed Fe, Cu, Pb, Si and Hg as main elements. Risk assessment of urban areas aims at limiting the impact of harmful events by increasing awareness of their possible consequences. Qualitative risk assessment allows to figure out possible risk situations and to prioritize them, whereas quantitative risk assessment is devoted to measuring risks from data, in order to improve preparedness in case of crisis situations. We propose an automatic approach to comprehensive risk assessment. This leverages on a semantic and spatiotemporal representation of knowledge of the urban area and relies on a software system including: a knowledge base; two components for quantitative and qualitative risk assessments, respectively; and a WebGIS interface. The knowledge base consists of the TERMINUS domain ontology, to represent urban knowledge, and of a geo‐referenced database, including geographical, environmental and urban data as well as temporal data related to the levels of operation of city services. CIPcast DSS is the component devoted to quantitative risk assessment, and WS‐CREAM is the component supporting qualitative risk assessment based on computational creativity techniques. Two case studies concerning the city of Rome (Italy) show how this approach can be used in a real scenario for crisis preparedness. Summary: Background: Prevalence of uninvestigated dyspepsia varies across cross‐sectional surveys. This may be due to differences in definitions used or study methodology, rather than global variability. Aim: To determine the global prevalence of uninvestigated dyspepsia according to Rome criteria. Methods: MEDLINE and EMBASE were searched to identify population‐based studies reporting prevalence of uninvestigated dyspepsia in adults (≥18 years old) according to Rome I, II, III or IV criteria. Prevalence of uninvestigated dyspepsia was extracted, according to criteria used to define it. Pooled prevalence, according to study location and certain other characteristics, odds ratios (OR), and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Results: Of 2133 citations evaluated, 67 studies fulfilled eligibility criteria, representing 98 separate populations, comprising 338 383 subjects. Pooled prevalence ranged from 17.6% (95% CI 9.8%‐27.1%) in studies defining uninvestigated dyspepsia according to Rome I criteria, to 6.9% (95% CI 5.7%‐8.2%) in those using Rome IV criteria. Postprandial distress syndrome was the commonest subtype, occurring in 46.2% of participants using Rome III criteria, and 62.8% with Rome IV. Prevalence of uninvestigated dyspepsia was up to 1.5‐fold higher in women, irrespective of the definition used. There was significant heterogeneity between studies in all our analyses, which persisted even when the same criteria were applied and similar methodology was used. Conclusions: Even when uniform symptom‐based criteria are used to define the presence of uninvestigated dyspepsia, prevalence varies between countries. This suggests that there are environmental, cultural, ethnic, dietary or genetic influences determining symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The geomagnetic storm (or "Carrington event") of 1–2 September 1859 is one of the largest geomagnetic disturbances on record. At the time, it caused widespread disruption to telegraph systems and was accompanied by aurorae seen overhead as far south as ∼29° magnetic latitude. The magnitude of the Carrington event means it remains a popular subject of study in the field of space weather, despite the sparse magnetic measurements available from the time. One set of measurements that is available is from the Rome observatory ("Collegio Romano," magnetic latitude ∼38.6°). Here we transcribe these horizontal magnetic field data and convert them to nanoteslas. We find that the device used at Rome had an operational range of around 305 nT. Despite going off‐scale during the storm, the magnetometer at Rome recorded changes of hundreds of nanoteslas per minute and tens of nanoteslas per second in the horizontal magnetic field. Apart from the tabulated data, we also examine the reported off‐scale deviation of 3,000 nT at Rome during the storm. While we could not explicitly locate this reported deviation in the tabulated data, we find that this deviation is comparable to magnetic variations seen at auroral latitudes for modern large magnetic storms, indicating that Rome was in the auroral oval during the morning of 2 September 1859. By comparing this large off‐scale deviation to modern geomagnetic data, we estimate that Rome may have experienced a maximum change of 420 nT min−1. Aim: Postural measures are frequently recommended for gastroesophageal reflux (GER) symptoms, despite limited evidence. This was the first study to assess the impact of upright and recumbent body positions on GER episodes in children and adolescents, not just infants.Methods: We retrospectively assessed the pH-impedance parameters of paediatric patients referred for possible GER-related symptoms to two hospitals in Naples and Rome, Italy, from September 2016 to September 2018. Data were separately obtained for the time that the patients spent in upright and recumbent positions.Results: Data from 187 patients under the age of 18 were collected, at a mean age of just over seven years. We found that the acid exposure time was stable irrespective of changes in body position (P > .05). The mean number of reflux episodes per hour was 2.99 during the upright position and 1.21 during the recumbent position (P < .05), and the mean oesophageal acid clearance time was 44.4 and 93.4 seconds, respectively (P < .05).Conclusion: Most paediatric patients experienced reflux in the upright rather than recumbent position, probably as a result of frequent transient lower oesophageal sphincter relaxations while they were awake. Ostia, the ancient port of Rome at the mouth of the river Tiber (Italy), flourished until the 2nd Century ad, although massive siltation had already caused the abandonment of its lagoonal harbour in the 1st Century bc. In search of an alternative harbour site, geomorphological and geoarchaeological research was carried out in the 'Fiume Morto', an abandoned Tiber meander to the immediate north of the town. To reconstruct its complex development and evaluate the suitability of the river channel as a fluvial harbour, a transect perpendicular to the former river channel's flow axis was systematically explored by a new methodological approach combining electrical resistivity tomography, direct push‐electrical conductivity sensing and vibracores. Together with microfossil, mineralogical and geochemical analyses of sediment samples and 50 radiocarbon dates, in‐depth stratigraphic data support a detailed reconstruction of different Tiber channel generations. Results reveal a meander development closely related to distinct 'cut and fill' dynamics. Inactive river channels were repeatedly filled with lagoonal sediments, abruptly followed by phases of intense incision. Yet, the overall Fiume Morto channel structure remained stable and almost in situ over centuries, showing nearly no lateral changes since the southward shift of the Tiber River mouth in the first millennium bc. In the 1st Century bc, channel conditions favoured navigation and transportation of goods with large ships. Open‐water conditions, suitable for anchoring and landing activities, dominate from the 1st Century ad until 1557 ad, when the Fiume Morto meander was finally cut off and silted up within a short time. Within the fluvial deposits, sediments most likely related to tsunami inundations are preserved. These events occurred sometime before the 2nd Century bc, in the early 1st Century ad and in the 17th Century ad or later. Background: Meal‐related symptoms are common in paediatric functional dyspepsia (FD). There are only a small number of paediatric studies assessing mechanisms for meal‐related symptoms, and these have not utilized Rome IV criteria. The aim of the current study was to assess gastric myoelectric and autonomic nervous system (ANS) responses to both liquid and solid meals in youth with Rome IV‐defined FD. Methods: In healthy controls (N = 14) and youth with FD (N = 12), we recorded electrocardiograph (to assess heart rate variability; HRV) and electrogastrograph (EGG) signals before and after two test meals, one liquid and one solid. EGG parameters and HRV were assessed for the entire pre‐ and postprandial periods and in short time intervals. Additionally, liquid gastric emptying was assessed utilizing a 13C‐acetate breath test. Key Results: During the EGG, the dominant power increased with both meals in controls but not patients with FD. During HRV assessment, the low frequency to high frequency ratio was higher after the liquid meal in controls, despite being similar preprandial, as compared to patients with FD. In controls, both standard deviation of normal to normal waves (SDNN) and root mean square of successive ECG R peaks (R‐R interval) differences (rMSSD) increased after the liquid meal (but not after the solid meal) in controls but not patients with FD. Conclusions and Inferences: Youth with Rome IV‐defined FD lacks the normal postprandial EGG dominant power response or autonomic nervous system response following a liquid meal. Background: Programmed death 1 (PD‐1) inhibitors are frequently associated with thyroid‐related adverse events (TAEs), but many aspects remain unclear. This study aims to evaluate the incidence and characteristics of such events and to find any predictive factor for its development. Methods: We retrospectively analysed data from patients with advanced solid tumours (non‐small‐cell lung carcinoma, renal cell carcinoma, metastatic melanoma) treated with PD‐1 inhibitors (nivolumab, pembrolizumab) in Oncology Unit B, Policlinico Umberto I of Rome, from June 2015 to December 2018. All patients underwent baseline thyroid function evaluations repeated monthly. Results: The cohort consisted of 126 patients (66.7% male, mean age 66.4 ± 9.7 years). One hundred and seven received nivolumab and 19 pembrolizumab. Twenty‐three per cent of patients experienced TAEs (mainly CTCAE grade 1), with hypothyroidism in 15.1% (subclinical: 11.9%, overt: 3.2%) and hyperthyroidism in 8.0% (subclinical: 4.8%, overt: 3.2%). Median time to TAE onset was 8.7 ± 6.8 weeks (10.4 ± 7.6 weeks for hypothyroidism, 5.4 ± 3.0 weeks for hyperthyroidism). Most TAEs (89.7%) appeared within the first 3 months, none after 8 months. Most hypothyroid patients (63.2%) had previously been treated with a tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI). Logistic regression analysis showed that pretreatment with a TKI was a major predisposing factor for the development of hypothyroidism (OR 9.2, 95% CI: 1.4‐59.9, P =.020). Conclusions: TAEs are common during anti‐PD‐1 therapy and usually occur within the first 3 months of treatment. This is the first study evaluating the impact of previous oncologic therapies on TAEs, identifying TKI as a major risk factor for the development of hypothyroidism in patients treated with anti‐PD‐1.
