At present, there are many semantic segmentation algorithms with excellent performance for intelligent driving vehicles, but most of them only work well on scenes with good illumination. In order to solve the problem of scene segmentation under low illumination, this paper proposes a novel semantic segmentation algorithm that combines visible and infrared images. In this algorithm, two parallel encoders are designed as the input of the images, and the decoder divides the fused images output from the encoder. The model is based on ResNet algorithm, and the residual attention module is used in each branch to mine and enhance the spatial features of multilevel channels to extract images information. Experiments are carried out on publicly available thermal infrared and visible datasets. In this paper, we propose a novel nonconvex and nonsmooth optimization model for low-light or inhomogeneous image segmentation which is a hybrid of Mumford–Shah energy functional and Retinex theory. The given image is decomposed into the reflectance component and the illumination component by solving Retinex-based Mumford–Shah model with L 1 − L 2 regularizer. Indeed, the existence of the L 1 − L 2 regularizer means the nonsmooth term in the model is nonconvex. Thus, it is difficult to solve the proposed model directly. An alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) algorithm is developed to solve the proposed nonconvex and nonsmooth model. We apply a novel splitting technique in our algorithm to ensure that all subproblems admit closed-form solutions. Theoretically, we prove that the sequence generated by our proposed algorithm converges to a stationary point under mild conditions. Next, once the reflectance is obtained, the K -means clustering method is utilized to complete the segmentation. We compare the proposed Retinex-based method with other state-of-the-art segmentation methods under special lighting conditions. Experimental results show that the proposed method has better performance for both gray-scale images and color images efficiently in terms of the quantitative and qualitative results. Aquila optimizer (AO) is an efficient meta-heuristic optimization method, which mimics the hunting style of Aquila in nature. However, the AO algorithm may suffer from immature convergence during the exploitation stage. In this paper, two strategies are elegantly employed into conventional AO, such as random opposition-based learning and nonlinear flexible jumping factor, which can efficiently enhance the performance of conventional AO. Experiments on 1 7 benchmark functions and image segmentation demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. Due to the haze weather, the outdoor image quality is degraded, which reduces the image contrast, thereby reducing the efficiency of computer vision systems such as target recognition. There are two aspects of the traditional algorithm based on the principle of dark channel to be improved. First, the restored images obviously contain color distortion in the sky region. Second, the white regions in the scene easily affect the atmospheric light estimated. To solve the above problems, this paper proposes a single-image dehazing and image segmentation method via dark channel prior (DCP) and adaptive threshold. The sky region of hazing image is relatively bright, so sky region does not meet the DCP. The sky part is separated by the adaptive threshold, then the scenery and the sky area are dehazed, respectively. In order to avoid the interference caused by white objects to the estimation of atmospheric light, we estimate the value of atmospheric light using the separated area of the sky. The algorithm in this paper makes up for the shortcoming that the algorithm based on the DCP cannot effectively process the hazing image with sky region, avoiding the effect of white objects on estimating atmospheric light. In this paper, an efficient interactive image segmentation method based on maximization of submodular function under user's scribble constraint is presented. The problem of interactive image segmentation is formulated as the maximum entropy rate under user's constraints. The objective function is submodular, and we solve the constrained submodular function maximization by incorporating a new data structure and some aggregating rules into the greedy algorithm. The main steps of our algorithm are as follows. First, the pixels scribbled by the user are clustered separately as target foreground and background clusters. Second, in the process of greedy algorithm, unscribbled pixels are aggregated to the corresponding target cluster according to the proposed aggregating rules. Finally, the segmentation result is presented by the two target clusters. The experiments and comparisons on three standard benchmarks show that our method has good performance. Our method is straightforward and efficient, and the time complexity of our method is between linear and polynomial. Threshold segmentation has been widely used in recent years due to its simplicity and efficiency. The method of segmenting images by the two-dimensional maximum entropy is a species of the useful technique of threshold segmentation. However, the efficiency and stability of this technique are still not ideal and the traditional search algorithm cannot meet the needs of engineering problems. To mitigate the above problem, swarm intelligent optimization algorithms have been employed in this field for searching the optimal threshold vector. An effective technique of lightning attachment procedure optimization (LAPO) algorithm based on a two-dimensional maximum entropy criterion is offered in this paper, and besides, a chaotic strategy is embedded into LAPO to develop a new algorithm named CLAPO. In order to confirm the benefits of the method proposed in this paper, the other seven kinds of competitive algorithms, such as Ant–lion Optimizer (ALO) and Grasshopper Optimization Algorithm (GOA), are compared. Experiments are conducted on four different kinds of images and the simulation results are presented in several indexes (such as computational time, maximum fitness, average fitness, variance of fitness and other indexes) at different threshold levels for each test image. Image segmentation (IE) in several disciplines of image processing and computer vision is an essential topic. Segmentation splits a picture into the areas or items that it constitutes. Image segmentation may be achieved with many approaches, some easier than others because of sophisticated programming requirements. The most common technique for segmenting pictures is edge detection (ED) based on sudden (locomotive) intensity fluctuations. This paper aims to study edge detection approaches for the division of images and acquired experimental findings, Sobel, Prewitt, Robert, CannyLoG (Laplacian of Gaussian). It is vital to ensure that picture segmentation algorithms deliver correct results quickly and efficiently for computer vision to reach its full potential. Computer vision approaches require more investigation in hierarchical architectural IoT networks created for seeing the world. In this work, the new way to provide joint image detection (JID) algorithm is to provide multi-scaling approaches for edge detection and segmentation using IoT edge computing (EC). This JID-EC method avoids the requirement to choose and track the edge explicitly. This study provides an overview of fundamental ideas, techniques, and algorithms common to segment images and edge detection, focusing on the segmentation and visualization of joint-articular cartilage images. The reason for this failure is that it is an image noise-sensitive high pass filter. The need for improved algorithms to meet a suitable value of low and high thresholds should thus be stressed for picture noise such as a canny edge, and the performance is achieved with an efficiency of 95.2%. The classical image segmentation algorithm based on local adaptive threshold can effectively segment images with uneven illumination, but with the increase of the image data, the real-time problem gradually emerges. In this paper, a quantum segmentation algorithm based on local adaptive threshold for NEQR image is proposed, which can use quantum mechanism to simultaneously compute local thresholds for all pixels in a gray-scale image and quickly segment the image into a binary image. In addition, several quantum circuit units, including median calculation, quantum binarization, etc. are designed in detail, and then a complete quantum circuit is designed to segment NEQR images by using fewer qubits and quantum gates. For a 2 n × 2 n image with q gray-scale levels, the complexity of our algorithm can be reduced to O (n 2 + q) , which is an exponential speedup compared to the classic counterparts. Multilevel thresholding is a basic method in image segmentation. The conventional image multilevel thresholding algorithms are computationally expensive when the number of decomposed segments is high. In this paper, a novel and powerful technique is suggested for Crow Search Algorithm (CSA) devoted to segmentation applications. The main contribution of our work is to adapt Darwinian evolutionary theory with heuristic CSA. First, the population is divided into specified groups and each group tries to find better location in the search space. A policy of encouragement and punishment is set on searching agents to avoid being trapped in the local optimum and premature solutions. Moreover, to increase the convergence rate of the proposed method, a gray-scale map is applied to out-boundary agents. Ten test images are selected to measure the ability of our algorithm, compared with the famous procedure, energy curve method. Two popular entropies i.e. Otsu and Kapur are employed to evaluate the capability of the introduced algorithm. Eight different search algorithms are implemented and compared to the introduced method. The implication of firefly and fuzzy firefly optimization algorithms has been greatly witnessed in clustering techniques and extensively used in applications such as Image segmentation. Parameters such as step factor and attractiveness have been kept constant in these algorithms, which affect the convergence rate and accuracy of the clustering process. Though fuzzy adaptive firefly algorithm tackled this problem by making those parameters an adaptive one, issues such as low convergence rate, and provision of non-optimal solutions are still there. To tackle these issues, this paper proposed a novel fuzzy adaptive fuzzy firefly algorithm that significantly improves the accuracy and convergence rate while comparing with the existing optimization algorithms. Further, the proposed algorithm fused with existing hybrid clustering algorithms involving fuzzy set, intuitionistic fuzzy set, and rough set resulted in eight novel hybrid clustering algorithms which lead to better performance in optimizing the selection of initial centroids. To validate the proposal, experimental studies have been conducted on datasets found in bench-marking data repositories such as UCI, and Kaggle. The performance and accuracy evaluation of proposed algorithms have been carried out with the aid of seven accuracy measures. To overcome this shortcoming, the idea of Darwinian theory is incorporated with CS algorithm to increase the diversity and quality of the individuals without decreasing the convergence speed of CS algorithm. In recent times, there has been a tremendous progress in image dehazing for computer vision applications, while the sky region processed by these algorithms tends to degrade by noise and color distortion. In this paper, an improved dark channel prior algorithm is proposed which detects the sky region first and divides the image into sky region and non-sky region and then estimates the transmission of two parts separately, followed by combining with refining step. The proposed algorithm also accurately corrects the transmission of the sky region to avoid noise and color distortion. Deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs) trained on the pixel-level annotated images have achieved improvements in semantic segmentation. Due to the high cost of labeling training data, their applications may have great limitation. However, weakly supervised segmentation approaches can significantly reduce human labeling efforts. In this paper, we introduce a new framework to generate high-quality initial pixel-level annotations. By using a hierarchical image segmentation algorithm to predict the boundary map, we select the optimal scale of high-quality hierarchies. In the initialization step, scribble annotations and the saliency map are combined to construct a graphic model over the optimal scale segmentation. By solving the minimal cut problem, it can spread information from scribbles to unmarked regions. In the training process, the segmentation network is trained by using the initial pixel-level annotations. To iteratively optimize the segmentation, we use a graphical model to refine segmentation masks and retrain the segmentation network to get more precise pixel-level annotations. The experimental results on Pascal VOC 2012 dataset demonstrate that the proposed framework outperforms most of weakly supervised semantic segmentation methods and achieves the state-of-the-art performance, which is 6 9. 3 % mIoU. Multilevel image thresholding is an essential step in the image segmentation process. Expectation Maximization (EM) is a powerful technique to find thresholds but is sensitive to the initial points. Differential Evolution (DE) is a robust metaheuristic algorithm that can find thresholds rapidly. However, it may be trapped in the local optimums and premature convergence occurs. In this paper, we incorporate EM algorithm to DE and introduce a novel algorithm called EM+DE which overcomes these shortages and can segment images better than EM and DE algorithms. In the proposed method, EM estimates Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) coefficients of the histogram and DE tries to provide good volunteer solutions to EM algorithm when EM converges in local areas. Finally, DE fits GMM parameters based on Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) to reach the fittest curve. Ten standard test images and six famous metaheuristic algorithms are considered and result on global fitness. PSNR, SSIM, FSIM criteria and the computational time are given. The one-dimensional Otsu method is an adaptive threshold method. It obtains the optimal threshold for image segmentation by the maximum between-class variance, without considering the minimum within-class variance. As the background of water surface image is mostly uniform, using this feature, the threshold selection tactics adopt the combination of the one-dimensional Otsu method and the uniformity measurement, proposes the threshold segmentation method based on uniformity measurement, and adopts the performance evaluation method based on GT image to compare the segmentation result. Experimental results demonstrate that effectiveness of the improved Otsu method is generally better than the traditional Otsu method, and the other four commonly used threshold segmentation methods for the water surface image, which improves the segmentation accuracy of such images and reduces the segmentation error rate. At the same time, as the water surface image is usually affected by light intensity, water ripple and other factors, this paper also adopts the relevant correction algorithm to further improve the segmentation accuracy. In this paper, we propose a robust variational segmentation model capable of overcoming the problem of the negative effects of outliers. The proposed method is based on the combination of the characteristics of the generalized mean with the concept of the active contours. The optimization problem raising in this combination employs a power method technique. We demonstrate the performance of the proposed model on a series of sample images from diverse modalities and show an outperforming proposed model in comparison with the state-of-the-art methods. The proposed method shows better or equivalent performance in terms of accuracy and robustness than the conventional state-of-the-art models. Kernel methods are a class of algorithms for pattern analysis to robust them to noise, overlaps, outliers and also unequal sized clusters. In this paper, kernel-based fuzzy c-means (KFCM) method is extended to apply KFCM on any crisp and non-crisp input numbers only in a single structure. The proposed vectorized KFCM (VKFM) algorithm maps the input (crisp or non-crisp) features to crisp ones and applies the KFCM (with prototypes in feature space) on them. Finally the resulted crisp prototypes in the mapped space are influenced by an inverse mapping to obtain the prototypes' (centers') parameters in the input features space. The performance of the proposed method has been compared with the conventional FCM and KFCM and other new methods, to show its effectiveness in clustering of gene expression data and segmentation of land-cover using satellite images. Brain tumor segmentation from magnetic resonance (MR) image is vital for both the diagnosis and treatment of brain cancers. To alleviate noise sensitivity and improve stability of segmentation, an effective hybrid clustering algorithm combined with fast guided filter is proposed for brain tumor segmentation in this paper. Preprocessing is performed using adaptive Wiener filtering combined with a fast guided filter. Then simple linear iterative clustering (SLIC) is utilized for pre-segmentation to effectively remove scatter. During the clustering, K-means + + and Gaussian kernel-based fuzzy C-means (K + + GKFCM) clustering algorithm are combined to segment, and the fast-guided filter is introduced into the clustering. The proposed algorithm not only improves the robustness of the algorithm to noise, but also improves the stability of the segmentation. In addition, the proposed algorithm is compared with other current segmentation algorithms. Hierarchical image segmentation provides a region-oriented scale-space, i.e. a set of image segmentations at different detail levels in which the segmentations at finer levels are nested with respect to those at coarser levels. However, most image segmentation algorithms, among which a graph-based image segmentation method relying on a region merging criterion was proposed by Felzenszwalb–Huttenlocher in 2004, do not lead to a hierarchy. In order to cope with a demand for hierarchical segmentation, Guimarães et al. proposed in 2012 a method for hierarchizing the popular Felzenszwalb–Huttenlocher method, without providing an algorithm to compute the proposed hierarchy. This paper is devoted to providing a series of algorithms to compute the result of this hierarchical graph-based image segmentation method efficiently, based mainly on two ideas: optimal dissimilarity measuring and incremental update of the hierarchical structure. Experiments show that, for an image of size 321 × 481 pixels, the most efficient algorithm produces the result in half a second whereas the most naive one requires more than 4 h. In this paper, we proposed a novel method for text line segmentation of Tibetan historical document image with uchen script based on contour tracking. Our method is mainly to segment the text lines from the image documents using the contour curve of the text lines, which consists of three parts: First, we calculate the barycentre coordinates of the connected components for the text regions, and then the barycentre of each text line is connected in order, so that the main part of each text line is connected and a new connected component is formed; then the contour curve of the connected component is obtained using the contour tracing algorithm; Second, the contour curve and the barycentre gravity are used to assign key elements (such as the syllable point, the upper vowel, the lower vowel, and the broken strokes and so on) of the text lines, and next the candidate text lines are obtained based on these connected components; Finally, the contour tracking algorithm is used to calculate the contour curve of the candidate text lines and segment the text lines. We evaluated our text line segmentation method on the 200 document image data sets. The traditional Gaussian mixture background model failed to build a reasonable background in complex scenarios, so this paper proposes an improved self-adaptive Gaussian mixture background modeling which integrates the difference method and adaptive threshold segmentation to improve the traditional one. In the proposed model, the difference method is applied to achieve the segmentation of changing area and background area, and different weight update policies are used for different areas. Background area updates background model with a fixed update rate. The changing region is divided into moving target area and background show area with the fusion of adaptive threshold; the background show area has a large update rate, allowing the previously obscured parts to recover rapidly; the moving target area won't build new Gaussian components for the Gaussian mixture model. Experiments show that the video sequence algorithm with uncertainties of building background model has good adaptability. Region of interest (ROI) is the most important part of an image that expresses the effective content of the image. Extracting regions of interest from images accurately and efficiently can reduce computational complexity and is essential for image analysis and understanding. In order to achieve the automatic extraction of regions of interest and obtain more accurate regions of interest, this paper proposes Optimized Automatic Seeded Region Growing (OASRG) algorithm. The algorithm uses the affinity propagation (AP) clustering algorithm to extract the seeds automatically, and optimizes the traditional region growing algorithm by regrowing strategy to obtain the regions of interest where target objects are contained. Experimental results show that our algorithm can automatically locate seeds and produce results as good as traditional region growing with seeds selected manually. Accurate segmentation of human brain image is an essential step for clinical study of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images. However, vagueness and other ambiguity present between the brain tissues boundaries can lead to improper segmentation. Possibilistic fuzzy c-means (PFCM) algorithm is the hybridization of fuzzy c-means (FCM) and possibilistic c-means (PCM) algorithms which overcomes the problem of noise in the FCM algorithm and coincident clusters problem in the PCM algorithm. A major challenge posed in the PFCM algorithm for segmentation of ill-defined MRI image with noise is to take into account the ambiguity in the final localization of the feature vectors due to lack of qualitative information. This may lead to improper assignment of membership (typicality) value to their desired cluster. In this paper, we have proposed the possibilistic intuitionistic fuzzy c-means (PIFCM) algorithm for Atanassov's intuitionistic fuzzy sets (A-IFS) which includes the advantages of the PCM, FCM algorithms and A-IFS. In document image processing, arc segmentation plays an important role in vectorization and graphic recognition. Moreover, the unsatisfactory results of several recent arc segmentation contests indicate that conventional methods are inadequate. This paper proposes a new arc segmentation algorithm called SymCAve (an acronym for Symmetry axis, Circle fitting and Average distribution points). First, we locate several seed points and adopt three strategies to ensure that the seed points are proper; then we calculate the center and radius utilizing the seed points. Second, the coordinates of the center and radius are adjusted by employing symmetry axes. Third, the average distribution points method is used to verify whether the points on the circumference are all black pixels. It is a complete circle if all of the points are black pixels. Otherwise, it is a partial circle if some of the points are black pixels and are continuous. Based on this information, the start and end angles of the partial circle can be determined. Finally, these arcs are verified to ensure that the results are accurate. Images and the evaluation tool were obtained from the GREC Workshop's Arc Segmentation contests, to test the systematic performance of the SymCAve algorithm. The experiments demonstrate that the proposed method can provide promising results. However, the algorithm has some drawbacks: it cannot detect a line with width of one pixel, small angles, and any large radius arcs. It is suited for segmenting images with appropriate symmetry axes. We present a self-directed method for image segmentation using a modified top-down region dividing (TDRD) approach. The TDRD-based image segmentation method solves some of the issues with histogram and region growing-based segmentation techniques. The process is efficient and achieves proper results without over segmentation or spatial-structure destruction. In this paper, we examine seven user-defined parameters of the method. These parameters are converted from human inputs to values derived from in-class information created by the algorithm allowing for autonomous image segmentation, without the need of human input or feedback. Our new autonomous implementation also reduces the computational complexity of the algorithm. This reduction will produce significant savings for the total number of computations the algorithm needs to perform image segmentation. Experimental results show that the images using these new derived values yield superior results as compared to other methods, including the original TDRD method.
