In 2002, the Energy Performance of Building Directive (EPBD) introduced energy certification schemes to classify and compare building performances to support reaching energy efficiency targets by informing the different actors of the building sectors. However, since its implementation, the Energy Performance Certifications (EPCs) remained unexploited with limited impact on the energy savings targets. In this context, the EPC RECAST project aims at studying a new generation of EPCs with a focus on the residential sector. More in detail, the paper presents and frames a monitoring approach based on low-cost and non-invasive technology for real data collection in existing residential apartments/houses. The method is based on different levels of monitoring selected according to the typology of the building (e.g., detached house, apartment), services (e.g., centralized or local energy generation), and energy vectors (e.g., natural gas or electricity). Three different levels have been identified (named as: basic, medium, and advanced) and for each one, different plug and play monitoring sensor kits have been selected. Six representative pilot buildings have been identified and selected to verify the approach in general and, in particular, the sensors' applicability and communication, the data reliability, and the monitoring platform. The presented work highlights, on the one hand, the general feasibility of the proposed monitoring approach; on the other, it highlights the difficulty of fully standardizing the sensors kits considering that each building/apartment has specific characteristics and constraints that have to be carefully analyzed. The use of the ultrasonic flow meters represents a good technical option for reducing the cost and the impact on the existing plant system; however, their installation must be verified considering that the logger needs to be powered and the sensors calibrated for collecting reliable data. The topic focuses on current solutions of interspaces in the renovation and modernization of residential buildings, the design of which is conditioned by the principles of sustainable development and construction. It concerns the integration of closed interspaces in renovated buildings from the 1950s to the 1980s. One example is the frequent glazing of loggias/balconies in original panel construction. The form of glazing of loggias and balconies is not regulated and is chosen by the apartment owners. For these reasons, the integration of interspaces in renovated buildings should be supported by research that will bring new insights about their effect on assessments of the energy performance of residential buildings and their effect on the architectural expression of facades. The paper compares alternatives for the integration of interspaces with an emphasis on the efferc of their orientation. This paper analyzes electricity use in buildings and explores key research questions related to assessing, rating, labeling, and benchmarking building energy use. The analysis reviews annual Energy Use Intensity (EUI) data from 3060 fully electric-powered buildings across six categories: residential, educational, offices, hospitals, hotels and restaurants, and wholesale and retail trade services. One-fifth of the analyzed buildings is derived from an energy dataset that offers a higher time-scale resolution, providing more detailed insights into energy usage patterns. The analysis employs various factors, including the seasonal variation factor (SVF), daily variation factor (DVF), monthly factor (M f), and hourly factor (H f), to gain a detailed understanding of actual energy usage at different time scales. The findings indicate that electricity use is less sensitive to seasonal variations than other energy carriers that provide heating and cooling. The paper provides hourly and monthly peak load percentages (PPL), which can indirectly assist in assessing hourly schedules for building energy performance simulations. The monthly energy use pattern varies between building categories, with high-energy months alternating between winter and summer. For non-residential buildings, high-energy hours correspond directly to the daytime, while for residential buildings, there is a shift towards the evening, and the daily amplitude is lower. Nowadays, buildings renovation is a subject of special interest since the building and construction sector is the main body responsible for energy consumption and emissions. Hence, it is necessary to concentrate on refurbishment to achieve Europe's climate neutrality by 2050 according to European Agenda goals. The BIM4EEB Project, a BIM-based fast toolkit for the efficient renovation of residential buildings, directs the attention toward developing an exhaustive toolkit based on Building Information Modeling (BIM) to be adopted in the renovation of existing residential buildings, to make the flow of information efficient, decreasing intervention working time while improving building performances, quality, and comfort for inhabitants. BIM4EEB is developing a BIM management system connected to an operational and multifunctional toolkit for various architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) stakeholders, integrating a set of tools for improving BIM adoption in renovation environments based on an interoperable flow of information. This paper presents the Horizon2020 Project and the framework used to develop the toolkit. In addition, the first outcomes of the toolkit development are outlined. The validation procedure in real environments has started to demonstrate the efficacy and applicability of the methodology and tools. Abstract Contrarily to what happens in northern European countries, buildings in the Mediterranean region are prone to overheating. Consequently, it is important to better understand the role that the thermal transmittance of the building envelope elements has on air-conditioning consumptions. This paper analyzes the effect of different U -values on building design in the Mediterranean area. 192 000 residential buildings were randomly generated for sixteen distinct locations and the energy consumption was assessed for each. It was found that in northern Mediterranean locations, as U -values decreased, energy consumption also decreased. However, in warmer climates, low thermal transmittances tended to significantly increase energy consumption. Hence, the lower the latitude, the higher the U -values should be, in order to prevent increasing the cooling demands. Additionally, geometry-based indexes were correlated with the building's energy performance. For high U -values, it was found that bigger buildings worsen the energy performance and larger windows tended to improve it. For low U -values, bigger north-facing windows were beneficial. There is an adequate interval of values for which the geometry has a lower impact, which is wider and higher for lower latitudes, thus meaning that not only does the building performance improve but architects are also freer to explore alternative designs. By designing and carrying out in-situ monitoring campaigns respectively in Cambridge, Hong Kong and Shanghai, we present in this paper a cross-regional analysis of actual building envelope performance in these three climatic regions that operate under different energy efficiency policies. Compared with conventional tabulated data, information gleaned from the method of in-situ monitoring shows lower uncertainty and higher precision, especially when the wall has good thermal properties. By comparing practices in different regions and with accurate post-occupancy thermal data, the analytical results further show that the effectiveness of building-related policies on energy performance varies across regions. This paper presents a methodology for creating an energy performance model based on a calibration process of a large-scale residential building incorporating heating and cooling energy consumptions. The main purpose is to calibrate the building energy model by utilizing mean bias error (MBE) and coefficient of variation of root-mean-squared error (CVRMSE) indices and obtain the annual building-energy performance with enhanced accuracy. Furthermore, two novel approaches were developed. The first is to provide accurate weather data in the absence of real weather data by taking advantage of available data for heating degree days (HDDs) and cooling degree days (CDDs). The second is to provide accuracy on the collected data of measurements by taking advantage of the predicted data of short term measurements. A methodology is evolved to calibrate the building model by using real-time short-term monitored data from the building. The methodology consists of four main steps and further sub-steps. Modeling, the first step, covers the collection of input data and the development of the model stages. Measurements, the second step, covers the process of data collection for calibration. Improvements for calibration represent the third step, where different versions of the model are developed by changing the input parameters of the model within the defined ranges of variation (ROV). Then, the results of the obtained versions are compared with the real-time measurements, and MBE and CVRMSE values for each version calculated to examine the model's accuracy. Finally, when the model is considered as calibrated, the simulation is run to obtain the annual energy performance of the building for better precision. The results in the model run here show the monthly MBE and CVRMSE values for the initial version to be 15.12% and 17.19%, respectively. After applied strategies, these values are improved according to the calibration criteria defined by ASHRAE to −2.76% and 8.40% respectively, which is considered as calibrated. Overall, it is usually hard and costly to track the real-time energy consumptions of buildings for a long period. Annual building energy consumptions can be obtained accurately by calibrating the building model with the short-term measurements. The existing residential building stock accounts for a substantial portion of worldwide energy consumption and greenhouse emissions. Improvements to the thermal performance of existing buildings is a vital activity to mitigate climate change, and often has additional benefits in the form of improved comfort, health and well-being for occupants. Despite the extensive body of literature in this area, it remains a difficult task to assess the performance of retrofit packages in occupied residential buildings. Experimental methods often fail to isolate the effect of retrofits from the numerous confounding factors, while modelling studies are prone to uncertainties and simplifications. The aim of this paper is to provide a critical review of previous studies that have applied experimental and simulation techniques to evaluate thermal retrofits, with a focus on data collection and simulation methods. Specifically, we compare monitoring campaigns in terms of monitored parameters, duration of monitoring campaign, temporal resolution and data application. Additionally, we investigate how data-driven building performance simulation may be used to improve predictive capacity and develop robust retrofit solutions. We identified a range of approaches within the literature, with a bias towards simulating simple performance models over detailed data-driven analysis. A strong correlation exists between occupant behaviour and space heating energy use. In particular, the occupancy status (e.g., daytime absence) is known to have a significant influence on residential heating load profiles, as well as on cumulative heating energy consumption. In the literature, many occupancy models have been utilised to predict occupancy profiles of individual dwellings as part of the larger residential building stock. However, none of the existing models consider diversity associated with occupancy-integrated archetypes to generate high-temporal resolution heating load profiles. The current paper uses Time Use Survey (TUS) data to develop a high-temporal resolution residential building occupancy model. The key feature of the proposed model, implemented using MATLAB, is the ability to generate stochastic occupancy time-series data for national population subgroups characterised by specific occupancy profiles. It is shown that the results are capable of closely approximating data available from TUS. The developed model can be applied to improve the quality of modelled high-temporal resolution heating load profiles for generic building stock characterised by population subgroups represented by different occupancy-integrated archetypes. The building sector is the largest consumer of the primary sources of energy worldwide. The most commonly used primary sources of energy to generate electricity are oil, coal, peat, shale, natural gas, nuclear, hydro, renewables, biofuels, and waste. The energy demand by the building sector is about 40% of the world's energy production. Net Zero Energy Buildings (NZEBs) is the best solution recommended by the energy experts to reduce substantial pressure on primary sources of energy contributed by the building sector. There is a marginal gap between estimates made during the design stage and actual energy performance of residential buildings, primarily due to a lack of understanding of the factors affecting energy use and whole building simulations software limitations. The purpose of this research work was to conduct a comparative analysis of a predicted versus actual energy consumption of prototype Net Zero Energy Building (NZEB) constructed at Higher College of Technology, Muscat. Hourly Analysis Program (HAP V4.2) was used to predict energy demand of NZEB at HCT and same size regular house in Muscat. PVWatts calculator was used to determining possible power generation by the PV system installed on the roof in the form of a canopy. The constructed house was tested for one month to perform multiple tasks as per competition requirements in which one of the major tasks was to produce onsite energy production by PV panel's equivalent to the energy consumed by the house. The actual energy consumption results were compared with the simulated result and observed that actual energy demand of house was approximately 20% lower than that predicted by the simulation tool. The comparison of simulation results between NZEB and regular house indicated 61.24% less energy demand of NZEB, mainly due to less HVAC load. The simulation result for BEI of NZEB showed 87.20 kWh/m2/year as compare to 225.1 kWh/m2/year for same size regular house. The simulated result obtained from PVWatts calculator for competition period and actual production of an installed PV system at the top roof showed a minor deviation of 0.73% only. The need to achieve energy consumption and greenhouse gas emission decreases within the building sector requires the implementation of a supportive legal framework. To fulfil this requirement, a building certification system must be developed that is easily understandable for end users. In Poland, assessments of the energy performance of buildings are based on primary energy indicator verification. However, this parameter is difficult to understand for building owners or for tenants. Therefore, in this study, energy efficiency class limits and a heating indicator for energy needs indicator have been estimated for multi-family buildings in Poland. To achieve this purpose, a reference building was used and 180 calculation variants were developed, which considered the following variables: 3 types of climate data, 4 values of building shape ratios, 3 types of ventilation, 3 thermal transmittance standards and 3 windows area ratios to the external wall. The results showed that the greatest influences on the need for energy used for heating were the type of ventilation used and the local climate. The existing performance gap between the design and the real energy consumption of a building could have three main origins: the occupants' behaviour, the performance of the energy systems and the performance of the building envelope. Through the estimation of the in-use Heat Loss Coefficient (HLC), it is possible to characterise the building's envelope energy performance under occupied conditions. In this research, the estimation of the HLC of two individual residential buildings located in Gainsborough and Loughborough (UK) was carried out using an average method. This average method was developed and successfully tested in previous research for an occupied four-story office building with very different characteristics to individual residential buildings. Furthermore, one of the analysed residential buildings is a new, well-insulated building, while the other represents the old, poorly insulated semidetached residential building typology. Thus, the monitored data provided were filtered in order to apply the abovementioned average method. Even without fulfilling all the average method requirements for these two residential buildings, the method provides reliable HLC values for both residential buildings. For the house in Gainsborough, the best estimated HLC value was 60.2 W/K, while the best approach for Loughborough was 366.6 W/K. Thus, despite the uncertainty sources found during the analysis, the method seems promising for its application to residential buildings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
