This paper aims to present aspects related to corporate governance, organisational resilience and sustainable practices developed by Brazilian companies during the COVID-19 pandemic. The methodological strategy included documentary research to identify sustainability reports published by companies listed on the Ibovespa index, which were examined through the content analysis technique. The results allowed light to be shed on opportunities for improvement concerning sustainability and corporate governance. Regarding organisational resilience, risk management is central for the development of sustainability practices by organisations. The support to society related to the COVID-19 pandemic was evidenced mainly through the donation of financial resources, equipment and hospital supplies. Practices related to reducing energy consumption and minimising waste generation were those most associated with environmental aspects. The actions identified were mapped according to their relations with the SDGs. Managers can benefit from the information presented in this study to enhance organisational sustainability and resilience, while researchers can use it as a starting point for future studies. Goal: This paper presents a case study in which the practice of Internal Process Safety Audit of the studied company needed to develop a system of remote audits during the COVID-19 pandemic. Design / Methodology / Approach: The system was analyzed in the light of recent theoretical references, having all its phases described, as well as its results and future prospects. Results: The systematic approach involved the development of specific procedures for planning and carrying out audits using a digital platform. The practice was implemented from March 2020 through August 2021. It was approved by the National Agency for Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) and is currently used as a reference for other operators in oil and gas exploration and production (E&P) in Brazil. Limitations of the investigation: The choice of a unique case study, restricted to a practice adopted since the beginning of the pandemic, brought some theoretical-methodological limitations. The authors chose to adopt participant observations due to the inclusion of one of the authors in the process of conducting the audits. Practical implications: The main contribution of this study focuses on the results of the critical analyses carried out to find the strengths and opportunities for improvement that could be adopted by organizations that have similar processes. Originality / Value: The added value of this study refers to the scope of the remote audit, as it is about Process Safety. The studies presented so far refer mostly to remote certification audits or maintenance of the quality management system, with emphasis on ISO 9001. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the health, economy, and all aspects of human lives around the world. Accurate prediction of the daily new cases of COVID-19 is critical for precise programming and taking needed measures to prevent the outbreak of it. Hence, in the present study, a new hybrid intelligent model is developed by hybridizing the artificial neural network (ANN) with the honey badger algorithm (HBA) to accurately predict the daily new cases of COVID-19 in Brazil, India, Russia, and the US. The performance of the hybrid model, namely HBA-ANN, was compared with the stand-alone ANN and gene expression programming (GEP) model using statistical criteria, such as correlation coefficient (R), root mean square error, scatter index (SI), and Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE), and graphical criteria, such as Taylor diagram, scatter plot, and box plot. According to the Taylor diagram, in each data series, the predicted values with the HBA-ANN model have the lowest distance from the observation points, indicating the high accuracy of the HBA-ANN model compared to the ANN and GEP models. Furthermore, the HBA-ANN model has high values for R (0.999, 0.899, 0.853, and 0.993 for Brazil, Russia, India, and the US, respectively) and could reduce the errors of the ANN model by 97.22, 43.68, 85.41, and 93.83% for Brazil, Russia, India, and the US, respectively. For each data series, the SI for the HBA-ANN model is less than 0.1, and the NSE is between 0 and 1, indicating a very good performance in predicting the COVID-19 cases with the developed model. Based on the superior performance of the HBA-ANN model, it is recommended to implement the HBA algorithm to increase the prediction accuracy of the models in medicine and other scientific fields. Moreover, it is suggested to investigate the accuracy of the hybridized HBA algorithm with other artificial intelligence (AI) models. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: to identify the factors associated with the use and reuse of masks among Brazilian individuals in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: cross-sectional study conducted in the five Brazilian regions, among adult individuals, via an electronic form disseminated in social media, addressing general information and the use of masks. Bivariate analysis and binary logistic regression were used to identify the factors associated with the use and reuse of masks. Results: 3,981 (100%) individuals participated in the study. In total, 95.5% (CI 95%: 94.8-96.1) reported using masks. Fabric masks were more frequently reported (72.7%; CI 95%: 71.3-74.1), followed by surgical masks (27.8%; CI 95%: 26.5-29.2). The percentage of reuse was 71.1% (CI 95%: 69.7-72.5). Most (55.8%; CI 95%: 51.7-60.0) of those exclusively wearing surgical masks reported its reuse. Being a woman and having had contact with individuals presenting respiratory symptoms increased the likelihood of wearing masks (p≤0.001). Additionally, being a woman decreased the likelihood of reusing surgical masks (p≤0.001). Conclusion: virtually all the participants reported the use of masks, most frequently fabric masks. The findings draw attention to a risky practice, that of reusing surgical and paper masks. Therefore, guidelines, public policies, and educational strategies are needed to promote the correct use of masks to control and prevent COVID-19. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Brazil was one of the countries most impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with a cumulative total of nearly 700,000 deaths by early 2023. The country's federative units were unevenly affected by the pandemic and adopted mitigation measures of different scopes and intensity. There was intense conflict between the federal government and state governments over the relevance and extent of such measures. We build a simple regression model with good predictive power on state COVID-19 mortality rates in Brazil. Our results reveal that the federative units' urbanization rate and per capita income are important for determining their mean mortality rate and that the number of physicians per 100,000 inhabitants is important for modeling the mortality rate precision. Based on the fitted model, we obtain approximations for the levels of administrative efficiency of local governments in dealing with the pandemic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study aimed to compare the impact of Role Blurring on mental health and Work-Life Integration in the Brazilian and Spanish populations during COVID-19. Role Blurring, which is related to resources and demands in the work context, affects coping with stressors arising from role overlapping and impacts individuals' perception of work overload and mental health. The sample consisted of 877 adults from Spain (n = 498) and Brazil (n = 372), and various statistical analyses were conducted to compare the groups. Results showed that Role Blurring is linked to symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress, as well as suicidal ideation. Therefore, it is essential to promote working conditions that limit expectations on availability and favor disconnection from work during leisure time. Public policies that intervene, promote, and prevent psychosocial risk factors in emergent contexts are crucial to prevent suicidal ideation and attempts. Considering the high expected influence of Blurring as a focus of interventions can be reflected in the medium term in the indicators of well-being and satisfaction of companies, institutions and organizations. This can result in the reduction of health costs aimed at cushioning post-COVID-19 impacts on mental health. The study is relevant to understand the impact of the pandemic and technology on mental health and suggests the need for interventions to promote work-life balance and prevent psychosocial risks. Social movements are purposeful, organized groups of people addressing the creation and reproduction of inequality, rights and access issues, seeking to transform sectoral policies. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, social movements have been acting in articulation with government and private companies and through other actions formulated within their networks, as service deliverers to the poor and vulnerable populations most heavily affected, often filling a gap created by unfulfilled policies. Our research with waste picker organizations in Brazil illustrates how their struggle for recognition has taken action in this context. Academic and government documents, social media and online material (blogs, posts, websites, etc.) and virtual meetings inform this research. We found that multiple actors have contributed to mitigate the urgent needs of waste pickers during the pandemic, but that at the same time, pre-existing challenges in waste management and the lack of wide-ranging social and economic inclusion have been further intensified. In 2020 and 2021, the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus spread rapidly across the world, causing the COVID-19 pandemic with millions of deaths. One of the measures to protect life was confinement, which negatively affected physical and mental health, especially of the older population. The aim of this study is to present and evaluate the methodological procedures of a telehealth and eHealth program "U3A in Motion", which was composed of videos of physical exercises and activities to promote the mental health and well-being of the older Brazilian population during the COVID-19 pandemic. The procedures included the planning, editing, and dissemination of videos through WhatsApp, and also on the YouTube platform, Instagram, and on a website. A total of 82 videos were created. The action reached 350 older adults from the local community in the northeast of Brazil, as well as being accessed by approximately 3000 other older adults from institutions in the southern region of Brazil. Based on the evaluation of activities through telephone interviews, it was found that older adults participating in the "U3A in Motion" program during confinement were highly motivated to access exercise activities, mainly via mobile phones, and reported a positive effect on physical and mental health. This study aimed to identify behavioral changes or welfare impairments in cats in response to home isolation due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Brazil, as well as the emotional role these animals may play with their tutors. Online questionnaires were answered by 419 cat's tutors in Brazil, who reported changes in the household routine because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The questions addressed information about the cat in the household, the tutor-cat relationship, the cat behavior, the house environment, and the changes occurred in the face of social isolation. It was evident that changes in people's routines were frequent and staying longer at home was the change most reported by the participants. Thus, cats were left alone for less time compared to the period before the quarantine. This led to an increase in the amount of time that tutors spent playing or paying attention to their cats. The quarantine period generated minimal undesirable behavioral changes in the cats, and the fact that the tutors stayed home longer contributed to reducing these changes. The fact that a cat could become infected by the new corona virus SARS-CoV-2 was known by less than half of the interviewees, which did not influence any tutor to think of getting rid of their cat. We highlight that the fact that the tutors stayed longer at home, interacting with their cat, contributed to reduce the undesirable behavioral changes in the cats. This also improved the tutors' perception of the cats' needs and behaviors, also reflecting on a greater perception of happiness in cats. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The pandemic caused by SARS-COV-2 virus required changes in the academic procedures and routines in general. In March 2020, the University of São Paulo (USP) decided to temporarily replace face-to-face classes by remote online learning using digital platforms. Due to its considerable number of faculties (approximately 6000) and graduate students (approximately 30,000) from the 267 Graduate Programs, USP had to face the challenge of dealing with new forms of learning, as well as new ways to make feasible thesis and dissertation defenses. In order to evaluate the changes required during the pandemic, the University Provost for graduate affairs conducted a survey, by using forms containing questions in order to allow the academic community the identification of the best and most efficient practices used by faculty members, as well as weaknesses that should be overcome. This article presents and discusses the results of this evaluation, considering 1454 answers about defenses and 2656 answers about online courses. The results showed that most of the faculty members and students approved the procedures adopted, but some improvements regarding remote defense sessions and learning strategies were necessary. The article also presents some immediate actions performed by USP in order to overcome the challenges presented during remote activities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Underreporting of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection is a global problem and might hamper Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) epidemiological control. Taking this into consideration, we estimated possible SARS-CoV-2 infection underreporting in Brazil among patients with severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). An ecological study using a descriptive analysis of the SARS report was carried out based on data supplied by the Influenza Epidemiological Surveillance Information (SIVEP)-Flu (in Brazilian Portuguese, Sistema de Vigilância Epidemiológica da Gripe) in the period between January 2015 and March 2021. The number of SARS cases and related deaths after infection by SARS-CoV-2 or Influenzae was described. The estimation of underreporting was evaluated considering the relative increase in the number of cases with undefined etiological agent comparing 2020 to 2015–2019; and descriptive analysis was carried out including data from January–March/2021. In our data, SARS-CoV-2 infection and the presence of SARS with undefined etiological agent were associated with the higher number of cases and deaths from SARS in 2020/2021. SARS upsurge was six times over that expected in 2020, according to SARS seasonality in previous years (2015–2019). The lowest possible underdiagnosis rate was observed in the age group < 2 y.o. and individuals over 30 y.o., with ~50%; while in the age groups 10–19 and 20–29 y.o., the rates were 200–250% and 100%, respectively. For the remaining age groups (2–5 and 5–9 y.o.) underreporting was over 550%, except for female individuals in the age group 2–5 y.o., in which a ~500% rate was found. Our study described that the SARS-CoV-2 infection underreporting rate in Brazil in SARS patients is alarming and presents different indices, mainly associated with the patients' age groups. Our results, mainly the underreporting index according to sex and age, should be evaluated with caution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In early 2020, the world was taken aback with the spread of the Covid-19 disease by an unknown coronavirus. Months later, the World Health Organization characterised this outbreak as a pandemic, urging decision makers to take actions to slow down the infection rate. Science communicators had to adapt their activities in support of recommendations for social distancing. In this article, we describe the mobilisation of astronomy communicators in Brazil, one of the most affected countries, as a consequence of social inequality, cuts in science funding and science denialism by the government. Practitioners filled out a survey, and the results showed that the amount and diversity of online activities increased considerably. Initiatives such as virtual exhibitions, transmission of sky observations and collective planetary sessions engaged thousands of people. Discussions about the pandemic and how science works were also present in several activities. The pandemic forced the community of astronomy communicators in Brazil to adapt to the situation, and motivated many of them to offer online activities. The diversity of those who communicate astronomy is extensive and appears to be increasing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objective: To investigate food insecurity (FI) prevalence in two favelas in Brazil in the early weeks of the social distancing policy, from 27 March 2020 to 1 June 2020.Design: A cross-sectional study using an online questionnaire to elicit information on socio-economic and demographic characteristics, the types of stores visited to buy food, and FI screening. The FI experience was evaluated according to the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale. Factors associated with moderate or severe FI were investigated using the logistic regression model.Setting: São Paulo city, Brazil.Participants: Totally, 909 householders. Results: Eighty-eight per cent of the households included young women working as cleaners or kitchen assistants and in sales services. One-fifth of the participants were involved in the federal cash transfer programme, called Bolsa Família. There were 92 % households with children. The most frequent experience reported was uncertainty about food acquisition or receiving more (89 %), eating less than one should (64 %), not being able to eat healthy and nutritious food (46 %), and skipping a meal (39 %). Forty-seven per cent of the participants experienced moderate or severe FI. Factors associated with moderate and severe FI were low income, being a Bolsa Família recipient, having a low level of education and living in a household without children. Conclusions: Half of the participants experienced moderate or severe FI, and almost 10 % experienced hunger. Our data suggest that families with children were at a lower risk of moderate to severe FI. It is possible that nationally established social programmes such as Bolsa Família were protecting those families. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

Background: Lack of a cure or vaccine of COVID-19 forced us to rely on public health interventions (PHIs) for combating the pandemic. The main objective of the study to assess the PHI in selected countries and relate the various factors related to the intervention with the case load of the country. Methods: An ecological analysis was conducted using secondary data on PHIs and disease burden extracted from official documents and press releases of the respective countries. Disease transmission was described based on calculated doubling time. PHIs were classified into 14 categories within three domains. An intervention score was calculated to reflect the number and stringency of the PHIs. Correlations between intervention scores, daily new cases and doubling time were presented. Results: Brazil and the USA had the lowest intervention scores while South Korea had the highest scores. The median doubling time was negatively correlated with the rapidity of the escalation of the PHIs.Conclusion: Dynamic government policies and timely PHIs, which are locally relevant and ably supported by the public are key to successful containment of the COVID-19 pandemic. The COVID-19 is disproportionally affecting the poor, minorities and a broad range of vulnerable populations, due to its inequitable spread in areas of dense population and limited mitigation capacity due to high prevalence of chronic conditions or poor access to high quality public health and medical care. Moreover, the collateral effects of the pandemic due to the global economic downturn, and social isolation and movement restriction measures, are unequally affecting those in the lowest power strata of societies. To address the challenges to health equity and describe some of the approaches taken by governments and local organizations, we have compiled 13 country case studies from various regions around the world: China, Brazil, Thailand, Sub Saharan Africa, Nicaragua, Armenia, India, Guatemala, United States of America (USA), Israel, Australia, Colombia, and Belgium. This compilation is by no-means representative or all inclusive, and we encourage researchers to continue advancing global knowledge on COVID-19 health equity related issues, through rigorous research and generation of a strong evidence base of new empirical studies in this field. The COVID-19 health emergency is impacting all of our lives, but the living conditions and urban morphologies found in poor communities make inhabitants more vulnerable to the COVID-19 outbreak as compared to the formal city, where inhabitants have the resources to follow WHO guidelines. In general, municipal spatial datasets are not well equipped to support spatial responses to health emergencies, particularly in poor communities. In such critical situations, Earth observation (EO) data can play a vital role in timely decision making and can save many people's lives. This work provides an overview of the potential of EO-based global and local datasets, as well as local data gathering procedures (e.g., drones), in support of COVID-19 responses by referring to two slum areas in Salvador, Brazil as a case study. We discuss the role of datasets as well as data gaps that hinder COVID-19 responses. In Salvador and other low- and middle-income countries' (LMICs) cities, local data are available; however, they are not up to date. For example, depending on the source, the population of the study areas in 2020 varies by more than 20%. Thus, EO data integration can help in updating local datasets and in the acquisition of physical parameters of poor urban communities, which are often not systematically collected in local surveys.
