Introduction: Fluent speech requires inhibitory control for the modification of speech interruptions before the onset or during the speech. The current study aimed at comparing the inhibitory control skill in 6 to 8-year-old children with fluent speech and developmental stuttering. Materials and Methods: This research is a descriptive-analytic cross-sectional study. The participants included 31 children with developmental stuttering (6-8 years old) selected based on the convenience sampling method. Also, 32 healthy children were selected from elementary schools in Tehran Province that matched in terms of age and gender with the first group. The children of two groups were selected from the same district (The fifth district) of Tehran Province. Visual Go/No-Go task was used to measure inhibitory control. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the groups. Results: The result showed that the mean score of children with stuttering in the inhibition index was lower than normal children. According to the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, the data distribution was not normal (P=0.042). Therefore, the parametric test of the Mann- Whitney U test was used. Despite the lower mean score of inhibition in children with stuttering than healthy children, there was no significant difference in the inhibition index between the groups (P=0.550). Conclusion: The findings indicated that Children Who Stutter (CWS) had less efficiency in inhibitory control skill compared to normal children, and this problem could be because of the exacerbation or persistence of stuttering. This paper addresses the provision of instruction to teachers and learners on becoming digitally literate and skilled with corpus-based tools. It proposes the compilation of specific pedagogic corpora, in this case in Geography and Science, to be used in the English young learners' classes in elementary education. The paper also illustrates the handling of user-friendly concordancer's tools of #LancsBox 6.0 to perform basic analysis of the corpora language through a more accessible technology. This study examines the effects of teaching philosophy for children (P4C) on the development of non-cognitive skills among students. Although the main focus of modern schooling is on attainment, non-cognitive skills and attitudes are still within the scope of modern education. The Ministry of Education in Saudi Arabia introduced a new policy to teach critical thinking and philosophy in its public schools in 2017. Although the effects of teaching philosophy on cognitive skills have been well-researched, fewer studies have studied the effects the teaching philosophy has on non-cognitive skills. The current study is the first to explore this issue in the Saudi educational context. This paper presents findings from a quasi-experiential design using 28 students in a Saudi elementary public school. An experimental group of sixth-graders participated in Philosophy for Children (P4C) sessions for 3 months, while the other group of sixth-graders did not receive any philosophy-related training. To collect data, the researchers used a survey designed for non-cognitive outcomes. The results show that the P4C group ranked higher in measures of communication, sociability, self-confidence, determination, willingness to try new things, happiness, and solving problems. On the other hand, the results show that the P4C group lagged behind in terms of empathy, democracy, and diversity compared to the experimental group. However, the differences are minor, and the sample is small. Nonetheless, the results are promising in indicating that P4C can improve students' non-cognitive skills. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The urban-rural gap of elementary education seriously affects social fairness, so the study on the urban-rural gap of elementary education can help promote social fairness in China. China's urbanization is an important variable affecting the social process, and its impact on the urban-rural gap of elementary education is worthy of further study. Based on China's provincial panel data from 2006 to 2017, this paper uses the Theil index to measure the urban-rural gap in different aspects of elementary education and uses principal component analysis (PCA) to construct a comprehensive index to objectively measure the urban-rural gap of overall elementary education in China. Our results show that the gap between urban and rural areas in China's elementary education showed an upward trend from 2006 to 2010, and the gap decreased year by year from 2010 to 2017. Then we used the panel smooth transition regression (PSTR) model to study the impact of urbanization on the urban-rural gap of elementary education in China and find evidence that urbanization has a nonlinear effect on the urban-rural gap of elementary education. That is, in economically underdeveloped areas, urbanization exacerbates the gap between urban and rural areas in elementary education, while in economically developed areas, urbanization narrows the gap between urban and rural areas in elementary education. Safe and adequate water supply and sanitation in schools are pre-requisites for the right to basic education for school children and the achievement of goal 4 and 6 of the Sustainable Development Goals. Nonetheless, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in schools is fraught with inadequacy of toilet and handwashing facilities, and poor sustainability mechanisms that threaten its success. This paper, therefore, assesses the operation and sustainability of WASH in schools in the Nabdam District of Ghana. Adopting a qualitative approach, thirty-seven semi-structured interviews were held to capture the understanding and experiences of students, head teachers, health officers, officials of the Ghana Health Service and District Education Directorate on the phenomena. Fifteen focus group discussions were further held with students in the basic schools. The findings indicate that WASH is poorly managed even though the schools studied had some established WASH facilities. WASH in the schools was bedeviled with challenges such as inadequate toilets and handwashing facilities, poor funding and ineffective WASH committees. The WASH committees lacked the capacity to raise funds and carry out their duties in accordance with the WASH implementation guidelines. The study recommends that the Ghana Education Service organizes periodic capacity building programs for WASH committees to address this shortcoming. The Ministry of Education should support basic schools in districts in their efforts to provide WASH facilities and fund WASH activities. Bloom’s taxonomy has been utilized in many brunches of disciplines and several user and nonuser study has been conducted by researchers to find out the reasons of degradation of library usage. But the application of Bloom’s taxonomy in elementary education in order to flourish the reading habit and library usage has not been done much. This paper outlines the lacunas of elementary education systems in India to indicate the primary deficiency of ability to make a library-oriented community and listing the antecedents of learning to read as well as draws a relationship model between education and library system and a symbiosis model among elementary education, library usage and Bloom’s Taxonomy have been given. Linguistic diversity comes in various forms. The most common ways of developing knowledge of more than one language according to some authors are either by learning a second language through participation in some form of bilingual education or being raised in a bilingual environment, such as school or a bilingual family. The phenomenon of development of literacy competencies of minority groups, specifically, the context of Roma people, in the Republic of North Macedonia, whose mother tongue is not even considered a standard language is the main research purpose of this paper. Research conducted in comparative studies on integrated education shows that in the elementary schools with high numbers of Roma students actions are rarely taken to enhance the integration of these minority students, because of 1) the lack of iconography, which is important for the ethnic identity of this minority and 2) low competence level of parents and teachers who are not adequately trained to work with students coming from different linguistic backgrounds or social backgrounds that are characterized by low literacy levels and low learning competences. Participants in this study were from several primary schools in North Macedonia and the responses were categorized according to the major themes that occurred. The findings show how women are excluded from obtaining better education and that multilingual children from deprived economic settings with poorly educated parents struggle and are seriously challenged to obtain proper literacy and education in elementary schools. The study reveals important details about the educational legislation, treatment of Roma people by local and international organizations and provides suggestions for improvement of the current status of the Roma population. The main objective of this paper was to analyze gender representation in Mexican elementary education materials from 1960 to the present, particularly on the topic of human evolution, as this is a fundamental subject for the understanding of our ancestry as a species, and for its relationship with questions about human nature. Using gender as a category and an approach that included both qualitative and quantitative methods, a comparison of three generations of textbooks for elementary school and "monographs" was carried out. This paper presents a study conducted with 83 Romanian elementary school teachers about their representations of Financial Education (FE) and the importance of teaching it in school. The teachers responded to an online survey about their perceptions and their needs to teach Financial Literacy (FL). The preliminary results show that most of the teachers recognize the importance of learning FL. Increasingly, STEM focused high schools are used prepare students for college STEM majors and launch them into STEM careers. Yet a new focus on STEM education at the elementary levels suggests that the importance of STEM education is much broader than a preparation for workforce needs in high school or college. This paper describes a case study designed to articulate the mission and design of an effective and nationally recognized STEM‐focused elementary school. As described through the six most impactful components of STEM‐focused elementary school design at Walter Bracken STEAM Academy, the case study emphasizes the school's strong and inclusive school leadership, with staff organized into grade level groups empowered to innovate and honing their teaching practices. External partnerships are leveraged to broaden student learning opportunities. Students at Bracken engage in active learning opportunities and multidisciplinary lessons where STEM is used as a way of thinking and as a way to coherently combine content into active learning opportunities that are engaging for learners. By organizing the structural components of an exemplary STEM‐focused elementary school, we hope to deliver actionable reforms for elementary schools wanting to increase their STEM‐focused offerings. This paper presents the results of a Q‐sort activity in which 38 grades 4–10 mathematics teachers reflected on their classroom teaching and ranked a set of teaching actions that support high‐leverage mathematics teaching from most to least characteristic of their classroom teaching. Data analysis included examining the overall ranking of each teacher action as well as the overall ranking of the associated high‐leverage teaching practice. Examination of the rankings indicated that teachers identified actions associated with the practices of supporting productive struggle in students' learning of mathematics and posing purposeful questions as most characteristic of their teaching. Teachers identified actions associated with the practices of eliciting and using evidence of student thinking and establishing mathematics goals to focus learning as least characteristic of their teaching. Thematic networks were created to represent the teachers' rationales for their priorities regarding implementation of high‐leverage teaching practices. Globalization has blurred geographical borders, allowing a multidirectional flow of cultures, languages, knowledge and actions among peoples around the world. Simultaneously, the New Information and Communication Technologies (NICTs) have enabled interactions not constrained by space and time, generating information and service offers and demands among individuals from anywhere in the world. In this scenario, both English Language (EL) and Digital Literacies have become paramount for international interactions. Despite the guidelines in UNESCO's documents and in the Brazilian Common Core Curriculum, EL teaching in public schools is still far from meeting the needs of a global society. In this paper, I analyze the intercultural, digital, multimodal and EL literacies of a group of public school 6th graders and establish the gaps between this diagnosis and the international and national educational guidelines. Purpose: the main objective of this article it's to describe a speech-advice model. Methods: research and analysis of orthographical errors using as basis the contents of 97 papers, created in the 2th.- 5th. grades of the elementary school. From the characterized orthographical errors, was planned a action with four Portuguese teachers of the 5th. grade of the elementary school and the pedagogical coordinator. Were realized 12 weekly and interventional reunions with the duration of an hour each, where the obstacles in the acquisition of the orthographical system, reflections regarding the literacy, pedagogical praxis and alterations in methods considered ineffective were debated using the student's papers as basis. Results: was perceived that the orthographical errors increased as the grades risen. It was formulated the hypothesis which the students of the 2th. grade committed few orthographical errors because they were following textual models and using a limited vocabulary. It was realized a qualitative re-evaluation of the papers who confirmed the cited hypothesis. As an result of the researching group, was verified a increase of the teachers' professional autonomy, which started to better comprehend the writing difficulties of the students, then drawing more efficient didactical tactics to suppress these problems. Conclusion: the ratification of hypothesis that the amount of orthographical errors can't represent an good indicator concerning the real writing mastery, resulted in significative benefit for the teachers which, accessing this data and taking that for themselves, could create new teaching strategies from the debated contents of the research. In the past, computer programming was perceived as a task only carried out by computer scientists; in the 21st century, however, computer programming is viewed as a critical and necessary skill that everyone should learn. In order to improve teaching of problem-solving abilities in a computing environment, extensive research is being done on teaching–learning methods, types of teaching software, the educational environment, and related tools. This paper, based on diverse experimental results, proposes an environment where elementary students can easily learn and practice computer programming. The proposed robot game environment used a tangible programming tool with which students can easily create robot programs, without learning syntax, and then validate their programming results; it can also provide various game activities to incite students’ interest. Observation of elementary school students placed in the robot game environment confirmed the tool’s usability and entertainment aspects, and students’ attitudes toward programming and their understanding of programming concepts improved. Traditional engineering curricula often do not provide opportunities for students to experience working with non-technical collaborators on real projects. Such interactions may help engineering students develop relevant communication skills. In this study, junior level engineering students collaborated with junior level elementary education students to develop afterschool STEM clubs for elementary children. The study sought to identify the effects of a cross-disciplinary, project-based service-learning experience on: a) the development of a deeper understanding of engineering as a discipline and b) the development of skills necessary to communicate technical information to a non-technical audience. This paper describes the learning outcomes achieved by engaging undergraduate engineering students in cross-disciplinary working relationships. The results suggest that the cross-disciplinary experience affected learning in the knowledge, skills, attitudes and identity of student participants. Student learning was assessed through analysis of questionnaire responses and student reflections. The results also confirmed that simply knowing technical information does not correlate with the ability to communicate that same information. Students reported that they gained experience communicating technical content with non-technical audiences and developed leadership skills. Mathematical identity is an individual's concept of who he or she is mathematically. In this paper, metaphors for mathematics from elementary education majors are compared to metaphors created by secondary mathematics teaching majors. The analysis demonstrates a basic difference in the mathematical identity of the two groups, with the latter group having more holistic conceptions of mathematics than the first group. Elementary education majors describe mathematics as an ongoing struggle in which the mathematics is active, and they are the victims. In the paper a comparative study conducted on the 1st grade students of sociology and pedagogy is discussed. The study focused on the language skills of students. The abilities to decode academic content are the most important tested skills. The study shows that the students have very poor language skills in decoding the academic content on every level of its complexity. They also have noticeable problems with the definition of basic academic terms. The significance of the obtained results is considerable because of the innovative topic and character of the study, which is the first such study conducted on students of a Polish university. This paper presents a comparative study of male teachers who work in public, elementary-level education in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and in Aveiro, Portugal. We intended, fundamentally, to research the reasons and consequences of the professional choice of teachers who are engaged in an area typically associated with women - an association so strong that these teachers seem like a "foreign body" in the daily lives of public elementary schools. We show that the presence of male teachers in elementary education is a way of bringing gender issues to the forefront of education, and that there are other issues and other voices that echo in schools, namely, individuals who are capable of exercising this profession regardless of gender. This paper aims to extract a group-pair relation as a Problem-Solving relation, for example a DiseaseSymptom-Treatment relation and a CarProblem-Repair relation, between two event-explanation groups, a problem-concept group as a symptom/CarProblem-concept group and a solving-concept group as a treatment-concept/repair concept group from hospital-web-board and car-repair-guru-web-board documents. The Problem-Solving relation (particularly Symptom-Treatment relation) including the graphical representation benefits non-professional persons by supporting knowledge of primarily solving problems. The research contains three problems: how to identify an EDU (an Elementary Discourse Unit, which is a simple sentence) with the event concept of either a problem or a solution; how to determine a problem-concept EDU boundary and a solving-concept EDU boundary as two event-explanation groups, and how to determine the Problem-Solving relation between these two event-explanation groups. Therefore, we apply word co-occurrence to identify a problem-concept EDU and a solving-concept EDU, and machine-learning techniques to solve a problem-concept EDU boundary and a solving-concept EDU boundary. We propose using k-mean and Naïve Bayes to determine the Problem-Solving relation between the two event-explanation groups involved with clustering features. The introduction of computer programming in K-12 has become mainstream in the last years, as countries around the world are making coding part of their curriculum. Nevertheless, there is a lack of empirical studies that investigate how learning to program at an early age affects other school subjects. In this regard, this paper compares three quasi-experimental research designs conducted in three different schools (n=129 students from 2nd and 6th grade), in order to assess the impact of introducing programming with Scratch at different stages and in several subjects. While both 6th grade experimental groups working with coding activities showed a statistically significant improvement in terms of academic performance, this was not the case in the 2nd grade classroom. The new standards for K-12 science education suggest that student learning should be more integrated and should focus on crosscutting concepts and core ideas from the areas of physical science, life science, Earth/space science, and engineering/technology. This paper describes large-scale, urban elementary-focused science, technology, engineering, and mathematics ( STEM) collaboration between a large urban school district, various STEM-focused community stakeholders, and a research-focused private university. The collaboration includes the development of an integrated STEM curriculum for grade K-5 with accompanying teacher professional development. This mixed-methodology study describes findings from focus group interviews and a survey of teachers from Title I elementary schools. In recent years, teacher education has been charged with reforming programs to better align curriculum, clinical practice, and accountability. The sense of urgency for reform has been heightened by competition from alternative routes to teaching that jump straight to practice, often criticized for foregoing essential knowledge and theory. This paper details one institution's journey of reforming its early childhood and elementary programs toward practice-based teacher education. Reform efforts have been guided by a clear theoretical framework and philosophical stance and include careful alignment of curriculum and clinical practice, increased partnerships with local schools, and a focus on accountability and program integrity. The focus is on answers to practical questions regarding the application of theory in a field-based teacher education model and is intended to support other programs in their own journey of reform. This paper summarizes the extant peer-reviewed research on PTs' understanding of geometry and measurement, focusing on a wide variety of topics within these content domains. When looking across the 26 studies reviewed, findings span a variety of content topics, providing little depth in either the geometry or measurement content domain. However, collective findings do indicate PTs' overall conceptions in geometry and measurement to be limited and weak, with PTs relying on memorized procedural processes. Some evidence indicates that cognitive development, along with spatial visualization skills, plays a greater role in learning geometry than memory skills. In addition, the van Hiele levels of geometric learning provide a helpful framework to think about the development of geometric ideas. Direction of future research is elaborated to address ways to develop PTs' understanding of geometry and measurement. This paper reports sophistication levels in third grade children's understanding of polygon concept and polygon classes. We consider how children endow mathematical meaning to parts of figures and reason to identify relationships between polygons. We describe four levels of sophistication in children's thinking as they consider a figure as an example of a polygon class through spatial structuring (the mental operation of building an organization for a set of figures). These levels are: (i) partial structuring of polygon concept; (ii) global structuring of polygon concept; (iii) partial structuring of polygon classes; and (iv) global structuring of polygon classes. These levels detail how cognitive apprehensions, dimensional deconstruction, and the use of mathematical language intervene in the mental process of spatial structuring in the understanding of the classes of polygons.
