This study aimed to investigate the morphological characteristics of fruits and seeds from Diptychocarpus strictus, a plant species inhabiting the cold desert pastoral area of China. Furthermore, this study sought to evaluate the germination potential of these seeds following digestion by sheep. This study employed the sheep rumen fistula method to simulate rumen digestion at various time intervals. Subsequently, an in vitro simulation method was utilized to simulate true gastric and intestinal digestion after rumen digestion. Paper germination tests were then conducted to assess the impact of the digestive process on the heteromorphic seed morphology and germination. During rumen digestion, the seeds were protected by wide wings. The results revealed a highly significant negative correlation (p < 0.01) between seed wing length and digestion time. Post-rumen digestion, variations in the germination rate among seeds from fruits at different locations were observed. Indicators, such as germination rate, exhibited a highly significant negative correlation with rumen digestion time (p < 0.01). In vitro simulated digestion tests demonstrated that Diptychocarpus strictus seeds retained their ability to germinate even after complete digestion within the livestock's digestive tract. The polymorphic nature of Diptychocarpus strictus seeds, coupled with their capacity to survive and germinate through the digestive tract, facilitates the spread of these seeds. China prioritizes ecological civilization construction and embraces the concept of "lucid waters and lush mountains are invaluable assets." Great achievements have been made in ecological protection and restoration through implementing a series of policies and projects. This paper reviews the history of ecological restoration in China and the current development of the "integrated protection and restoration project of mountains, rivers, forests, farmlands, lakes, grasslands, and deserts (IPRP)." Furthermore, the characteristics of IPRP were systematically elaborated from the perspectives of the ecological civilization thought, the policy management, and the key scientific issues. Also, the current achievements were summarized in the fields of national ecological space management, biodiversity conservation, and ecological protection and restoration. Existing challenges in management policy, scientific issues, and engineering practices were highlighted. Future perspectives include ecological space control, nature-based Solutions, biodiversity big data platform, modern techniques, and value realization mechanisms of ecological products. In the Gobi desert region, the predominant frequency of the horizontal-to-vertical spectral ratio (HVSR) curve of seismic noise ( f H / V ) is typically above 3 Hz. However, most of the existing formulas for estimating cover thickness (H) based on f H / V are only applicable for f H / V values below 5 Hz. Therefore, new formulas that can accurately calculate H in this region are crucially needed. To this end, a case study was conducted where noise measurements were carried out in the Gobi region in China, as well as in the east and northeast regions of China. The HVSR curves and f H / V were calculated, and a formula that correlates f H / V with H was derived. In addition, formulas that correlate with Vs20 (average shear-wave velocities to depth 20 m) and Vs30 (average shear-wave velocities to depth 30 m) f H / V were fitted. The relationship between the site fundamental period ( T s ) and T H / V (1 / f H / V ) was also investigated. Finally, by using all of the noise measurements and applying the derived relationships, a method for rapidly measuring the site type was proposed. The results showed that the equation for calculating H in this paper is highly reliable, with relative errors less than 30% compared to other researchers. The correlation between f H / V and Vs30 was higher than that between f H / V and Vs20. The accuracy rate of the proposed method for fast identification of ground types was greater than 80%. In seismic data processing, low-frequency random noise with non-Gaussian and non-stationary characteristics heavily contaminates the reflected signals in Tarim area, which brings great difficulties in interpretation of seismic records in northwest China. To achieve more satisfied resolution, more greater fidelity, together with much higher increased signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), this paper proposes a SNR enhancement method based on the combination of variational mode decomposition (VMD) and Semi-soft Go Decomposition (Semi-Soft GoDec), named VMD-SSGoDec, which can realize the simplification of low-rank extraction in time–frequency representation (TFR) domain. Firstly, each trace of the rough seismic record is decomposed into several modes to reconstruct a component matrix by VMD. Due to the semi-low rank or approximate low-rank character of the desert low-frequency noise component matrix in TFR domain, secondly, we apply the Semi-soft GoDec, a low-rank matrix estimation to extract the low-frequency random noise components from the VMD results obtained in the first step. Repeating the above single-trace procedure to each trace rather than decomposing the entire record but use low-rank estimation once can lead to a more reduced dimension of the component matrix, and thus simplify the low-rank selection in Semi-soft GoDec. Finally, with the extracted random noise results in the second step, we can obtain the denoised record by making a difference with the original input. The proposed algorithm is tested by both synthetic record and field desert seismic data. Experimental results show outstanding advantages in low-frequency noise attenuation comparing with those of f-x deconvolution and SSWT-OptShrink. Both low-frequency random noise and surface waves are almost thoroughly attenuated by the proposed method, while the reflected signals are left nearly intact, revealing a significant enhancement in SNR. The Seriphidium transiliense desert pasture is an important spring-autumn pasture in northern Xinjiang, China, and has been subjected to grazing by livestock at different intensities, thus resulting in widespread deterioration of its biodiversity and ecosystem services. To understand the response mechanism of stoichiometric characteristics of desert vegetation to grazing, the leaf carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and C:N:P ratios of S. transiliense were studied under different grazing intensities. The results show that the control S. transiliense leaf C, N and P contents and C:N, C:P and N:P ratios were 458.79 ± 53.5 g/kg, 20.6 ± 7.18 g/kg, 2.83 ± 1.24 g/kg, 25.69 ± 11.08, 190.28 ± 75.65 and 8.21 ± 4.01, respectively. The differences in these characteristics varied with grazing intensity in accordance with sampling time, so both factors need to be considered comprehensively. General linear model (GLM) analysis indicated that grazing intensity had a strong main effect on S. transiliense leaf C, N, and P content, C:N ratio and N:P ratio. As grazing intensity increased, the leaf N content and N:P ratio increased (P < 0.01), and the C:N ratio decreased (P < 0.01). N content was the limiting factor for the growth of S. transiliense, but the grazing intensity, sampling year and growth season each affected the degree of N limitation. Our findings suggest that the remaining moderate stocking rate was essential for sustaining desert stabilisation in Xinjiang, and although S. transiliense could adapt its nutrient content and leaf stoichiometry to the grazing intensity, N was always the limiting element for the growth of S. transiliense. As an important part of the Earth's environmental system, sandy soils are particularly sensitive to changes in the climatic environment. As one of the four major desert regions in China, the MuUs desert has transformed from a desert to an oasis after more than half a century of ecological management. In this paper, we analyzed the spatial and temporal patterns of surface albedo, evapotranspiration, and fraction vegetation cover in the MuUs desert based on the Global Land Surface Satellite (GLASS) product with high spatial and temporal resolution and assessed the relationships between their variability and snow cover, air temperature, and precipitation. It is of great significance to understand the effect of desertification control and climate change after the conversion of land surface types in the MuUs region. The results show that the desertification control in the MuUs area has achieved remarkable results since 1982. The fraction vegetation coverage of the MuUs desert showed a significant increasing trend, with an interannual change rate of 1.32% each decade−1. The surface albedo of MuUs desert decreased significantly. Affected by vegetation and snow cover, it was lower in summer and higher in winter. The evapotranspiration showed a significant upward trend, higher in summer and lower in winter, which is significantly correlated with the changes in surface albedo, air temperature, and vegetation. In addition, the local-scale biophysical effects caused by vegetation change have influenced the climate of the MuUs region, manifested as the increase in precipitation and air temperature. Rocky desertification is one of the most critical ecological and environmental problems in areas underlain by carbonate rocks globally. Land cover and land use in the region affects large-scale ecosystem processes on a global scale, and many Earth system models rely on accurate land cover information. Therefore, it is important to evaluate current global land cover products and to understand the differences between them, and the findings of these studies can provide guidance to different researchers when using or making land cover products. Whereas there are many studies on the assessment of coarser resolution land cover products, there are few studies on the assessment of higher resolution land cover products (10 m). In order to provide guidance for users of 10 m data, this paper uses the rock deserted southwest region of China as the experimental area. We analyzed the consistency and accuracy of the FROM-GLC, ESA WorldCover 10 and ESRI products using spatial pattern consistency, absolute accuracy assessment of three validation samples, and analyzed their intrinsic relationships among classification systems, classification methods, and validation samples. The results show that (1) the overall accuracy of the FROM-GLC product is the highest, ranging from 49.47 to 62.42%; followed by the overall accuracy of the ESA product, ranging from 45.13 to 64.50%; and the overall accuracy of the ESRI product is the lowest, between 39.03 and 61.94%. (2) The consistency between FROM-GLC and ESA is higher than the consistency between other products, with an area correlation coefficient of 0.94. Analysis of the spatial consistency of the three products shows that the proportion of perfectly consistent areas is low at 44.89%, mainly in areas with low surface heterogeneity and more homogeneous cover types. (3) Across the study area, the main land cover types such as forest and water bodies were the most consistent across the three product species, while the grassland, shrubland, and bareland were lower. All products showed high accuracy in homogeneous areas, with local accuracy varied in other areas, especially at high altitudes in the central and western regions. Featured Application: This paper applies to solve the shortage of building sand on the basis of principle of sustainable development. Meanwhile, this paper also provides guidance for desert sand concrete (DSC) subjected to elevated temperature and dynamic loading. In the building domain, the non-renewable resource of sand is widely used to produce concrete and mortar. The sand production has been estimated to be more than 10 billion tons with a total of 1.2 billion tons used in concrete in the last decade, which causes the gradual reduction of available building materials and impacts the environment. Since there are abundant desert sand resources in northwestern China, it would be viable to utilize desert sand as an alternative material for concrete production. In this study, an investigation of dynamic mechanical behaviors of desert sand concrete (DSC) was conducted. Various desert sand replacement ratios (0–100%) were used to replace the equivalent hill sand as fine aggregate. Experimental results showed that strain rate had a strong effect on the dynamic mechanical behaviors of DSC. The compressive strength (at room temperature) and flexural strength (after elevated temperature) increased with desert sand replacement ratio (DSRR) with the optimum replacement ratio of 40%, which was because the increase of DSRR improved the compaction of DSC. However, the effect of the low strength of desert sand was higher than that of the compaction when the DSSR exceeded 40%, so both strength values generally decreased with the increase of DSRR. Moreover, the dynamic constitutive model of DSC at room temperature was established on the basis of a nonlinear visco–elastic constitutive model (ZWT model), which can predict the stress–strain curves of DSC. Featured Application: The main purpose of this paper is to prepare high ductility Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC) by using high volume of fly ash and replacing fine river sand with the Mu Us desert sand. It will fully reduce the preparation cost and promote the application of FRC in engineering fields. Besides, it will also offer a practical guidance to the feasibility of the desert sand as engineering sand. This paper presents the study on the properties of high-ductility fiber reinforced concrete made with desert sand from China's Mu Us desert. The workability and uniaxial tensile/compression properties of undisturbed desert sand-based fiber reinforced concrete (DS-FRC) with the change of water-to-binder ratio (W/B), sand-to-binder ratio (S/B) and desert sand replacement rate (DSRR) were experimentally investigated. Experimental results reveal that the appropriate W/B and desert sand content are conducive to the workability development of DS-FRC. The uniaxial tension/compression properties of DS-FRC are mainly affected by the W/B. Especially, the highest uniaxial tensile/compression stresses and corresponding strains are obtained at the W/B of 0.29. The S/B has similar effects on the uniaxial tensile/compression properties, and an S/B of 0.36 is the optimal ratio. In terms of the DSRR, it shows less effect on the uniaxial tensile/compression properties, even for the DSRR of 100%. The Kubuqi Desert is the seventh-largest desert in China. Under the leadership of the central, autonomous region and local governments, the ecological situation has undergone historic changes. In this paper, we select Hangjin Banner and Dalate Banner, which have the most widely distributed deserts and use 347 households as the research perspective to construct the evaluation index system of the government's ecological environment governance effect. The entropy method is used to evaluate the governance effect, and the ordinary least squares and quantile regression are used to compare the evaluation differences of different publics. The research found the following. (1) The public believes that the government's ecological governance measures have achieved good results in the third-level index analysis. The ecological environment in the desert area has been significantly improved; that is, the survival rate of trees has increased, the area of vegetation coverage and vegetation types have increased, and the frequency of sandstorms has decreased. However, the intensity of sandstorms and the flow of water sources did not change significantly. The various types of public income have increased significantly compared to before the governance. The public takes the ecological priority as the concept and actively participates in the government's governance implementation, which means that the ecological awareness and behavior are higher. (2) Among the second-level index, the weights and scores in descending order are public economic characteristics: 45.53% and 0.4840, public ecological behavior: 25.62% and 0.1682, public ecological effect perception: 18.35% and 0.1240, and public ecological awareness: 10.51% and 0.0291. The comprehensive evaluation result is 0.8054, which is in the first grade, and the effect is excellent. (3) The public comprehensive evaluation results of the two regions are similar. Hangjin Banner is 0.8209 and Dalate Banner is 0.8557, both in the first grade. The effect is excellent. (4) In the OLS regression results, gender has a significant positive impact on evaluating the government's ecological environment governance effect. Age, ethnicity, and occupation have a significant negative impact. As the quintile increases, the influence of gender, age, and ethnicity first increases and then decreases. The maximum regression coefficient of gender at the 50% quantile is 0.714, which has a significant positive effect. Age has a significant negative impact at each quantile. The regression coefficient of ethnicity at the 50% quantile is the highest -0.357, which has a significant negative impact. Occupation only has a significant negative impact at the low quintile. Seismic exploration is an essential way for stratigraphic information acquisition and resource exploitation. However, the unique near surface conditions of the desert region in northwest China pose a special problem. On the one hand, compared with Gaussian noise, desert noise concentrates in the low-frequency band, which is seriously overlapped with those of the effective signals; On the other hand, its nonstationary, nonlinear, and non-Gaussian characteristics seriously affect the accuracy of weak signal recovery and increase the difficulty of noise suppression. In the collected field data, effective signals are often submerged by the intense low-frequency noise. Considering that traditional denoising methods have some limitations on this kind of noise, a new multi-scale dense connection feature fusion (MS-DCFF) denoising convolution neural network is presented in this paper. This denoising network can adaptively learn the potential features of effective signals through multi-scale feature fusion techniques and increase the degree of information exchange by utilizing the dense connections between different blocks. Moreover, we construct relatively complete training dataset containing an effective signal dataset and a noise dataset for desert low-frequency noise suppression, thereby boosting the feasibility of the network for desert noise suppression. Both simulation and field data prove that the superior performance of the proposed MS-DCFF in the aspect of low-frequency noise (mainly includes random noise and surface waves) suppression and effective signal recovery, compared with band-pass filtering, f-x filtering, and DnCNNs. Overgrazing and continuous grazing give rise to considerable decreases in aboveground biomass and soil organic carbon. Grazing exclusion (GE) has been determined to be an effective approach to enhance the soil carbon storage of arid and semiarid grasslands in China. However, at present, there is no consensus regarding whether GE affects soil carbon, especially in desert regions with differing degrees of degradation. This paper examines the changes in soil organic carbon density (SOCD), easily oxidizable carbon density (EOCD) and microbial biomass carbon density (MBCD) in slightly degraded desert (SD) and moderately degraded desert (MD) after different periods of GE. The results indicate that GE did not significantly alter SOCD in SD, but GE caused SOCD to decrease by 12.7–25.6% in 0–20-cm soil depth in MD. EOCD and MBCD in all soil surface layers of SD first decreased and subsequently increased with increasing GE duration, whereas in the 0–20-cm soil layer of MD, these values increased linearly with increasing GE duration and aboveground biomass. Therefore, we proposed that carbon density was significantly different among distinctly degraded deserts, and we should consider the degree of degradation and the condition of desert regions before implementing GE. Taklamakan desert is known as the largest dunefield in China and as the second largest shifting sand desert in the world. Although with long history and glorious culture, the Taklamakan desert remains largely unexplored and numerous microorganisms have not been harvested in culture or taxonomically identified yet. The main objective of this study is to explore the diversity, novelty, and pharmacological potential of the cultivable actinomycetes from soil samples at various sites along the Alar-Hotan desert highway in the Taklamakan desert. A total of 590 actinobacterial strains were recovered by the culture-dependent approach. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene sequences unveiled a significant level of actinobacterial diversity with 55 genera distributed in 27 families of 12 orders. Thirty-six strains showed relatively low 16S rRNA similarities (<98.65%) with validly described species, among which four strains had already been characterized as novel taxa by our previous research. One hundred and forty-six actinobacterial isolates were selected as representatives to evaluate the antibacterial activities and mechanism of action by the paper-disk diffusion method and a double fluorescent protein reporter "pDualrep2" system, respectively. A total of 61 isolates exhibited antagonistic activity against the tested "ESKAPE" pathogens, among which seven strains could produce bioactive metabolites either to be able to block translation machinery or to induce SOS-response in the pDualrep2 system. Notably, Saccharothrix sp. 16Sb2-4, harboring a promising antibacterial potential with the mechanism of interfering with protein translation, was analyzed in detail to gain deeper insights into its bioactive metabolites. Through ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC)-quadrupole time-of-flight (QToF)-MS/MS based molecular networking analysis and databases identification, four families of compounds (1 – 16) were putatively identified. Subsequent bioassay-guided separation resulted in purification of four 16-membered macrolide antibiotics, aldgamycin H (8), aldgamycin K (9), aldgamycin G (10), and swalpamycin B (11), and their structures were elucidated by HR-electrospray ionization source (ESI)-MS and NMR spectroscopy. All compounds 8 – 11 displayed antibacterial activities by inhibiting protein synthesis in the pDualrep2 system. In conclusion, this work demonstrates that Taklamakan desert is a potentially unique reservoir of versatile actinobacteria, which can be a promising source for discovery of novel species and diverse bioactive compounds. Ecological restoration in desertified areas is a worldwide problem. Vegetation restoration is the most sustainable method. But vegetation restoration is facing the challenge of scientific water use. The most effective method of scientific water use is to introduce new material technologies and scientific water management. In this paper, the principles and characteristics of water science materials in recent years are comprehensively analyzed, which includes the interfacial structure water transport mechanism and water droplet formation principle of structural micro-water irrigation technology, the structure self-differential dynamic principle and water transfer dynamics of water molecule infiltrated Irrigation Materials for Self-regulating soil moisture, preliminary scientific analysis and biomimetic structure test of biomimetic gel, water storage principle and characteristics of sand surface crust biomaterials. In addition, according to the characteristics of desert water resources, future research fields and characteristics of desert water science materials are inferred, and the new material technology of "smart irrigation" and "waterless irrigation" will be the leading direction for future development is put forward. Desertification is one of the major challenges facing humanity. However, there is no effective way to effectively control desertification. China is experiencing serious desertification, and to alleviate this trend, China has implemented a series of major ecological projects since 1978 and has achieved good results. Remote sensing can record changes in surface processes over a long period of time and can play an active role in desertification monitoring and governance. However, there is no systematic remote sensing monitoring method for desertification. In response to this problem, this paper takes a demonstration and reconstruction project of the United Nations desertification in the Kubuqi Desert in China as an example. By using the 30-year time series Landsat data, we propose a new remote sensing monitoring method for the impact of ecological restoration engineering of desert to monitor the spatial and temporal evolution pattern of the Kubuqi Desert in the past 30 years and the impact of the human ecological reconstruction project on the location of land use types in the Kubuqi Desert. In addition, the method analyzes the impact of the Kubuqi Desert Reconstruction Project on the local ecological environment changes from time and space perspectives. The results show the following: (1) During 1991–2017, the Kubuqi Desert Reconstruction Project improved the cultivated land, afforestation, and the Yellow River Drainage to control the sand and in conjunction with other renovation projects improved the ecological environment. The area of the sandy land decreased from 45.76% to 28.66%, while the areas of the waters wetland and artificial forest (shrub), urban construction land, and agricultural land increased; (2) There are obvious time and space differences in the transformation, and the vegetation cover increases as a whole. The obvious change areas are mainly distributed in the riverbank irrigation area of the Yellow River section of the Kubuqi Desert and the torrents such as the Maobula Kong, Buer Taigou and Heilaigou and other mountain gully areas. Currently, fire in building is one of the most serious disasters. With the increase of basic construction items in western China, ordinary medium sand resource no longer met with the need of engineering. Compressive strength experiments of concrete produced with desert sand after elevated temperature were carried out in this paper. The effects of desert sand replacement rate (DSRR), temperature and cooling regime on the mechanical performances of concrete produced with desert sand were analyzed. XRD and SEM experiments were also conducted to study the microstructure of concrete produced with desert sand after elevated temperature. Experimental results showed that the cubic compressive strength of concrete produced with desert sand increased firstly, and then declined with temperature. Whereas, the prismatic compressive strength and elasticity modulus of concrete produced with desert sand under static compression declined with temperature. With the enhancement of DSRR, the elasticity modulus under static compression, cubic compressive strength and prismatic compressive strength of concrete produced with desert sand after elevated temperature increased firstly, and then declined, the maximum value of which was reached when DSRR amounted to 40%. Regression models were established to predict the mechanical performances of concrete produced with desert sand after elevated temperature, which were in good agreement with experimental results. As one of the major regions of carbonate rock oil–gas exploration in western China, Tazhong area of the Tarim Basin has severe environment and complex ground surface conditions, hence the signal to noise ratio (SNR) of the field seismic data is extremely low. To improve the SNR of desert seismic data is a crucial step in the following work. However, the random noise in desert seismic characterizes by non-stationary, non-gaussian, non-linear and low frequency, which are very different from the random Gaussian noise. In addition, the effective signals of desert seismic generally share the same frequency band with strong random noise. These all make some traditional denoising methods cannot suppress it well. Therefore, a new noise suppression framework based on improved PSO–SVM is proposed in this paper. First, we extract the correlation of noisy desert seismic data to form feature vector. Subsequently, the model of improved PSO–SVM was built to classify the extracted feature, thereby identifying the position of the seismic events. Finally, second-order TGV filter was applied for obtaining denoised results. We perform tests on synthetic and field desert seismic record and the denoising results show that the proposed method can effectively preserve effective signals and eliminate random noise. Spatiotemporal patterns of column-averaged dry air mole fraction of CO2 (XCO2) have not been well characterized on a regional scale due to limitations in data availability and precision. This paper addresses these issues by examining such patterns in China using the long-term mapping XCO2 dataset (2009–2016) derived from the Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite (GOSAT). XCO2 simulations are also constructed using the high-resolution nested-grid GEOS-Chem model. The following results are found: Firstly, the correlation coefficient between the anthropogenic emissions and XCO2 spatial distribution is nearly zero in summer but up to 0.32 in autumn. Secondly, on average, XCO2 increases by 2.08 ppm every year from 2010 to 2015, with a sharp increase of 2.6 ppm in 2013. Lastly, in the analysis of three typical regions, the GOSAT XCO2 time series is in better agreement with the GEOS-Chem simulation of XCO2 in the Taklimakan Desert region (the least difference with bias 0.65±0.78 ppm), compared with the northern urban agglomeration region (−1.3±1.2 ppm) and the northeastern forest region (−1.4±1.4 ppm). This paper reports on the design of wildlife crossing structures (WCSs) along a new expressway in China, which exemplifies the country's increasing efforts on wildlife protection in infrastructure projects. The line and belt transect method, the surface water survey, and the sign-tracking investigation were used to determine the target species in the study area and the quantity, candidate locations, size, and type of the WCSs. The intensity index and encounter rate showed that the ibex (Capra ibex), argali sheep (Ovis ammon), and goitered gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa) are the main ungulates in the study area. Among them, the goitered gazelle is the most widely distributed species. Underpass WCSs were proposed based on the expert knowledge and crossing hotspots estimated using survey results. The mean distance between estimated hotspots and their nearest proposed WCSs is around 341 m. In addition, those proposed WCSs have a width of no less than 12 m and height of no lower than 3.5 m, which is believed to be sufficient for ungulates in the area. Given the limited availability of high-resolution movement data and wildlife-vehicle collision data during the road's early design stage, the approach demonstrated in this paper facilitates the practical spatial planning and provides insights into designing WCSs in a desert landscape. This paper presents the environmental history and its responses to palaeoclimatic changes since the start of the Holocene in the eastern portion of the desert belt (sand seas and sandy lands) in northern China by comparing the aeolian sandpalaeosol sequences and their palaeoclimatic proxies. The optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) ages of the aeolian sandpalaeosol sedimentary sequences and a series of palaeoenvironmental proxies show that: (1) The large-scale dune landscape currently in the Kubuqi Sand Sea was formed during the Holocene in general; and the palaeosol was generally developed during the period of 4–2 ka, indicating conditions favorable for vegetation growth, soil development, and organic carbon accumulation due to increased precipitation or effective moisture and weakened aeolian activities; the large-scale expansion of dunes in the recent 2 ka is closely linked to human activities. The variable discharge of the Yellow River with diversions for irrigation may have resulted in a more consistent supply of aeolian particles for dune field expansion. (2) The dune landscape of the Hunshandake Sandy Land was likely formed around 12 ka, and before this, the western part of the Hunshandake Sandy Land would have been covered by a single large lake; it was obviously wetter than today in the sandy land during the period of 9.6–3 ka and the palaeosols were developed at the same time. But the aeolian activities have not been completely dormant in this long-lasting wetter epoch; because the Holocene wetter period was likely time-transgressive across the region. (3) The palaeosol of the Hulunbuir Sandy Land began to develop as early as 14.5 ka, probably continuing until the last 2 ka. The palaeosol development of various dune fields in the eastern portion of the desert belt (sand seas and sandy lands) in northern China is spatially heterogeneous, and even the palaeosol development time in different locations within each sandy land is inconsistent. During the middle Holocene (especially the 7.5–3.5 ka), all the sandy lands were stabilized in general and the intensity of aeolian activities was significantly weakened. The number of palaeoenvironmental records in the eastern portion of the desert belt (sand seas and sandy lands) in northern China has increased rapidly in the past decade, but the amount of published data still does not match the vast extent of the dune fields. China is now the world leader with green capital actually creating renewable energy technologies. We address the possibility of whether China can emerge a new ecological civilization, as well as become the global leader to reach climate security. In particular, China has the potential to implement a solar energy infrastructure in the deserts of the Middle East as part of the Belt and Road Initiative, mainly in the form of concentrated solar power. The creation of this renewable energy capacity could supply electricity to much of the world, as well as power the direct air capture (DAC) of carbon dioxide with a permanent burial in the crust, in particular, using the ultramafic deposits in Oman. This realization would increase the chances of not breaching the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warming target of 1.5 ℃, of course only if coupled with the termination of utilizing fossil fuels as early as possible and their replacement with renewable energy supplies globally. In this context, our pioneering model establishes that coupling a DAC-driven drawdown of atmospheric carbon dioxide with a rapid increase in the renewable energy capacity is more than capable of producing enough clean energy to eliminate energy insecurity globally (to all 8–10 billion humans) and to provide energy for the drawdown for the rest of the 21st century, thereby reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide to safe levels. This contingency will likely only be realized with a shift to demilitarization of the global economy. The changes and influencing factors of soil inorganic carbon (SIC) and organic carbon (SOC) on precipitation gradients are crucial for predicting and evaluating carbon storage changes at the regional scale. However, people's understanding of the distribution characteristics of SOC and SIC reserves on regional precipitation gradients is insufficient, and the main environmental variables that affect SOC and SIC changes are also not well understood. Therefore, this study focuses on the Alxa region and selects five regions covered by three typical desert vegetation types, Zygophyllum xanthoxylon (ZX), Nitraria tangutorum (NT), and Reaumuria songarica (RS), along the climate transect where precipitation gradually increases. The study analyzes and discusses the variation characteristics of SOC and SIC under different vegetation and precipitation conditions. The results indicate that both SOC and SIC increase with the increase of precipitation, and the increase in SOC is greater with the increase of precipitation. The average SOC content in the 0–300cm profile is NT (4.13 g kg−1) > RS (3.61 g kg−1) > ZX (3.57 g kg−1); The average value of SIC content is: RS (5.78 g kg−1) > NT (5.11 g kg−1) > ZX (5.02 g kg−1). Establishing artificial sand-fixing shrubs is a key measure to curb dune flow and drive changes in the soil stocks and cycling of carbon and nitrogen. But our understanding of these dynamics across years of sand-fixing afforestation and the factors influencing them remains inadequate, making it hard to accurately assess its capacity to sequester carbon. To fill that knowledge gap, this study investigated soil organic carbon (SOC) and soil total nitrogen (STN) stocks in Mu Us Desert under artificial sand-fixing shrub stands of different ages (10, 30, 50, and 70 years old) vis-à-vis a mobile sand dune, to determine whether Caragana korshinskii afforestation improved stock characteristics and whether SOC and STN stocks were correlated during the restoration processes. The results showed that the pattern observed is consistent with an increase over time in the stocks of both SOC and STN. At 10, 30, 50, and 70 years, these stocks were found to be 1.8, 2.3, 3.2, and 5.5 times higher for SOC, and 1.3, 1.6, 2.1, and 2.7 times higher for STN, respectively, than those of the control (mobile sand) dune. Stocks of SOC and STN mainly increased significantly in the 0–10 cm soil layer. The SOC stock was correlated positively with the STN stock as well as the C:N ratio. The slope of the regression for the C:N ratio against stand age was positive, increasing slightly faster with afforestation age. Additionally, our findings suggest that during the establishment of artificial stands of shrubs, the size of the STN stock did not expand as fast as the SOC stock, resulting in an asynchronous N supply and demand that likely limits the accumulation of soil organic matter. Soil moisture is a key factor in arid ecosystems, with local variations influenced by topography and vegetation. Understanding this relationship is crucial for combating desertification. Employing ANOVA, Mean Decrease Accuracy (MDA) analysis from random forest modeling and Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), this study investigates the distribution of soil moisture and its associations with topographic and vegetative factors across four micro-geomorphic units in the Tengger Desert, China. Significant heterogeneity in soil moisture across various layers and locations, including windward and leeward slopes and the tops and bottoms of dunes, was observed. Soil moisture generally increases from the surface down to 300 cm, with diminishing fluctuations at greater depths. Soil moisture peaks in the surface and middle layers on windward slopes and in deep layers at the bottom of dunes, exhibiting an initial rise and then a decline on windward slopes. Topographic (including slope direction and elevation difference) and vegetation (including shrub and herb coverage) factors significantly influence soil moisture across three depth layers. Topographic factors negatively affect soil moisture directly, whereas vegetation positively influences it indirectly, with shrub and herb abundance enhancing moisture levels. These insights inform ecological management and the formulation of soil moisture-conservation strategies in arid deserts. Solar photovoltaic (PV) is one of the most environmental-friendly and promising resources for achieving carbon peak and neutrality targets. Despite their ecological fragility, China's vast desert regions have become the most promising areas for PV plant development due to their extensive land area and relatively low utilization value. Artificial ecological measures in the PV plants can reduce the environmental damage caused by the construction activity and promote the ecological condition of fragile desert ecosystems, therefore yield both ecological and economic benefits. However, the understanding of the current status and ecological benefits of this approach in existing desert PV plants is limited. Here we surveyed 40 PV plants in northern China's deserts to identify the ecological construction modes and their influencing factors. We quantified the ecosystem service value (ESV) provided by these PV plants using remote sensing data and estimated the potential for ESV enhancement. Our results show that PV plant construction in desert regions can significantly improve the ecosystem, even with natural restoration measures (M1) alone, resulting in a 74% increase in average fractional vegetation cover (FVC) during the growing season, although the maximum average FVC of only about 10%. The integrated mode M4, which combined artificial vegetation planting M2 and sand control measures M3, further enhance the average growing season FVC to 14.53%. Currently, 22.5% of plants lack ecological measures, 40% employ only a single measure, but 92% of new plants since 2017 have adopted at least one ecological construction mode. The main influencing factors include surface type, policy support, water resources, ecological construction costs, and scientific management guidance. If artificial ecological construction were incorporated, a significant ESV could be achieved in these PV plants, reaching $8.9 million (a 7.7-fold increase) if assuming a targeted 50% vegetation coverage. Wind shear is one of the crucial parameters in wind resource assessment and also serves as a vital parameter and basis for determining wind turbines' selection and hub height. Existing studies have only focused on typical underlying surface areas, but a relatively limited comprehensive analysis of wind shear characteristics in different complex environments remains. This study analyzes the daily and monthly variations in wind shear index (α) at the station scale based on the observations from 754 wind measurement towers across land surfaces in China. The distribution and empirical values of wind shear in different wind regions and underlying surface types are also investigated. The research findings indicate that the wind shear index derived from fitting the complete annual average wind speeds at multiple height levels of meteorological towers can accurately characterize the stratification state of the atmospheric boundary layer. The variation pattern of solar radiation influences the daily α value in typical regions. In mountainous and desert areas, the monthly variation tends to be higher in autumn and winter and lower in spring and summer. However, its monthly variation shows relatively smaller fluctuations in plain regions. The comprehensive α value over land regions in China is 0.135. The α values for I, II, III, and IV wind fields are 0.111, 0.163, 0.1, and 0.153, respectively. Its values for mountainous, plains, grassland, and desert regions are 0.12, 0.273, 0.123, and 0.104, respectively. By conducting statistical analysis on α values across different wind regions, guidance is provided for extrapolating surface wind speeds to hub-height wind speeds. To understand the role of shrubs in nebkha development, a comparative analysis of nebkha morphology and shrub features was conducted in two different habitats at the southeast margin of the Tengger Desert, Northern China. Morphometric variables of 184 Nitraria tangutorum nebkhas were measured in a semi-fixed lake-basin lowland site (site 1, n = 102) and a salinized fixed sand site (site 2, n = 82). Mean length, width, projected area, and accumulated sand volume were all greater in nebkhas in site 1 than in site 2 (p < 0.05); however, mean height (i.e., sand burial depth) did not differ significantly in nebkhas between the two sites (p > 0.05). The larger nebkha volume in site 1 relative to site 2 (mean, 88.19 m3 vs. 33.16 m3) implied that the projected area influenced the accumulated sand volume. Nebkhas in site 1 tended to have large areas, low densities, and high spatial autocorrelation, while nebkhas in site 2 exhibited opposite trends with stochastic distribution. Mean vegetation density was significantly higher in site 1 than in site 2 (p < 0.05), while mean vegetation height exhibited an opposite trend (p < 0.05). In addition, there was higher vegetation coverage in site 1 than in site 2 (p > 0.05). According to the results, plant species (i.e., N. tangutorum) limited nebkha height under similar wind regimes regardless of the transport distance of aeolian material, while aeolian deposition and its effect on shrub growth jointly increased nebkha size. Accurate estimation of desert vegetation transpiration is key to regulating desert water resources of desert ecosystems. Sap flow density (SFD) can indirectly reflect a tree's transpiration consumption, and it has been affected by climate warming and groundwater depths in desert ecosystems. Sap flow responses to meteorological conditions and groundwater depths are further affected by tree of different sizes. However, how meteorological factors and groundwater depths affects tree sap flow among tree sizes remains poorly understand. In this study, a 50 × 50 m P. euphratica stand was selected as a sample plot in the hinterland of the Taklamakan Desert, and the SFD of P. euphratica of different sizes was measured continuously using the thermal diffusion technique from May to October of 2021 and 2022. The results showed that SFD of large P. euphratica was consistently higher than that of small P. euphratica in 2021 and 2022. and the SFD of P. euphratica was significantly and positively correlated with solar radiation (Rad) and vapor pressure deficit (VPD), and the correlation was higher than that of the air temperature (Ta) and relative humidity (RH), and also showed a strong non-linear relationship. Analysis of the hour-by-hour relationship between P. euphratica SFD and VPD and Rad showed a strong hysteresis. Throughout the growing season, there was no significant relationship between SFD of P. euphratica and groundwater depth, VPD and Rad were still the main controlling factors of SFD in different groundwater depths. However, during the period of relative groundwater deficit, the effect of groundwater depth on the SFD of P. euphratica increased, and the small P. euphratica was more sensitive, indicating that the small P. euphratica was more susceptible to groundwater changes. This study emphasized that Rad and VPD were the main drivers of SFD during the growing season, as well as differences in the response of different sizes of P. euphratica to groundwater changes. The results of the study provide a scientific basis for future modeling of transpiration consumption in P. euphratica forests in desert oases, as well as the regulation and allocation of water resources. This paper addresses the surface and Holocene aeolian deposits in the southeastern Mu Us Desert, N. China, systematically analysing the evolution of the geochemical characteristics of aeolian sand-palaeosol sequences and their environmental significance. Our results indicate that the geochemical components of the Holocene aeolian deposits and surface deposits had the similar material sources, sediment transport and deposition processes in the study region, which were dominated by SiO2, Al2O3, and Na2O. In the weathering process of the Jinjie (JJ) profile, the Na, K, and Si presented the slight leaching and migration in general, while the other elements were relatively accumulated. The Holocene aeolian deposits and surface deposits incurred weaker geochemical weathering under cold and dry conditions and were only weakly leached, which implies a relatively arid environment in the Holocene epoch and the modern era. The weathering degree was controlled by the regional temperature and precipitation, and was probably more sensitive to the precipitation changes. In the sedimentary profile, the geochemical parameters and migration of elements demonstrated that there have been several alternating warm-wet and cold-dry intervals in the Mu Us Desert in the Holocene epoch; there were relatively warm and wet conditions prior to 4.6 ka, and it has been cold and dry since then. Six millennial-scale dry events were recorded during the Holocene, which were not only accordant with the history of palaeoclimatic changes in the different latitudes and archives of the Northern Hemisphere, but also correspond to the millennial-scale variation of cosmic radiation and solar activity during that period. Many studies have been done on the relationship between variation in morphology, dispersal ability and degree of dormancy of heterocarpic species with dimorphic diaspores. However, there are far fewer such studies on species that produce trimorphic diaspores. Our aim was to compare dormancy and germination of achenes from peripheral, intermediate and central positions in the capitulum of the diaspore-trimorphic cold desert annual Asteraceae species Heteracia szovitsii , an important component of plant communities in the cold deserts of NW China. Dormancy breaking/germination responses of the three achene morphs and of seeds isolated from the pericarp were tested in the laboratory using standard procedures, and seedling emergence phenology of the achene morphs was monitored under natural cold desert temperature conditions in an experimental garden with and without supplemental watering. Depth of dormancy of the three achene morphs was peripheral > intermediate > central. Seedlings from the three morphs emerged in spring and in autumn. Cumulative seedling emergence percentage from achenes during 47 months of burial was central > intermediate > peripheral. Central achene morphs emerged over a period of ~12 months after sowing, while intermediate and peripheral achene morphs did so for ~40 and 47 months, respectively. Thus, H. szovitsii exhibits a temporal dispersal strategy. No viable central or intermediate achene morphs were present after 16 and 40 months, respectively, but ~60 % of the non-emerged peripheral achenes morphs were viable after 47 months. Based on our results on diaspore dormancy and those of a previous study of diaspore spatial dispersal of H. szovitsii , we conclude that this species has a high–intermediate–low risk diaspore dispersal/dormancy strategy that likely increases the chances for population persistence over time and space. Deserts and sandylands that are located in the semi-arid and arid regions in the middle latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere are usually regarded as environmentally sensitive change belts which respond to global climatic change. In northern China, activation or immobilization of sand dunes is mainly influenced by humid and dry variation and is related to stronger or weaker Asian monsoons. In this paper, the history of Holocene millennial-scale climatic and environmental change is reconstructed by the systematic analysis of the geochemical element contents and parameters, along with the OSL and C chronologies, from the different lithologies of the palaeosol-aeolian sand sequence in the south-eastern Mu Us Desert, northern China. Our results indicate that the region was dominated by a dry climate with intensive aeolian activity before 7.2 ka BP, and there was an optimal humid climate and fixed desert in 7.2-4.6 ka. Afterwards, the dune fields became mobile again as the effective humidity declined. Additionally, six dry events were discovered with times of ~7.2, 7.0-6.8, 6.6-5.7, 4.6-4.1, 3.7-3.5, and 3.3-2.5 ka, which were not only coincident with the intervals of millennial-scale weaker Asian summer monsoons, but also accordant with the cold events evidenced in the ice cores and deep-sea deposits of the high latitudes in the Northern Hemisphere. In general, the Holocene climatic and environmental changes had the characteristics of the 'monsoonal mode' and 'abrupt millennial-scale oscillation' in the Mu Us Desert. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In arid northwestern China, as many inland areas around the world with arid or semi‐arid climate, inland river flow recharges groundwater; vegetation pattern depends on the water table, which characterizes the landscapes of oasis, transition zone and desert, within different distances from an inland river. The water table conditions play an important role in water and land management—a high water table causes salinization within the oasis while a low water table causes desertification around the oasis. This study applies a theoretical‐empirical method to calculating critical groundwater depths including the depth of critical groundwater level causing salinization (DCGS) and the depth of critical groundwater level causing desertification (DCGD); the calculations are validated with field observations in the Luocheng Irrigation District located in the middle reach of the Heihe River, an inland river of the northwestern China. Specifically, the calculated DCGS is 1.29 m for the case study area and the range of water table depth at the locations with saline soil is 0.5‐1.2 m. The calculated DCGD for three vegetation communities, Nitraria tangutorum + Glycyrrhiza uralensis Fisch community, Tamarix chinensis + Phragmites australis community, and Alhagi sparsifolia + Phragmites communis, are 8.26, 11.26, and 13.26 m, respectively, basically within an observed range of 6.0‐13.0 m in the study area. The critical depths can be used to design an engineering approach to control water tables and mitigate salinization and desertification problem for ecosystem restoration in the study region. A theoretical‐empirical method is used for the quantification, which is validated by extensive field measurements. Although a theoretical equation proposed by Laplace et al. (cited in Rui 2004) is available for calculating the lifting height of capillary water, the key component of the critical water table depths, it is difficult to apply the equation for the calculation in real‐world problems due to the challenges in estimating some parameters in the equation. We develop some new empirical relationships in a case study area in northweastern China to estimate the soil characteristics function with porosity, which enables the real‐world application of the equation to calculate the lifting height of capillary water. Syntrichia caninervis is the dominant species of biological soil crust in the desert, including the Gurbantunggut Desert in China. It is widely distributed in drylands and considered to be a new model of vegetative desiccation tolerance moss. Here, we cloned an ATG8 gene from S. caninervis and confirmed its function under multiple abiotic stresses, both in situ and in Physcomitrium patens. The results showed that the ScATG8 gene encoded a protein with a highly conserved ATG8 functional domain. ScATG8 gene was increasingly expressed under different abiotic stresses. Under desiccation stress, the overexpression of ScATG8 enhanced the tolerance of S. caninervis and its ability to scavenge ROS. In addition, ScATG8 overexpression promoted the growth of P. patens under multiple stress conditions. Thus, ScATG8 may be a multifunctional gene, and it plays a critical role in the survival of S. caninervis under various abiotic stresses. Our results provide new insights into the function of ATG8 in enabling desiccation tolerance and open up more possibilities for subsequent plant molecular breeding and the mining of the resistance genes of S. caninervis and other moss species. Precipitation alteration could profoundly affect the plant community structure and ecosystem function in desert grassland. However, the mechanism of ecological response driven by plant community during extreme changes in precipitation remains unclear. To address this uncertainty, we examined the responses of community composition, diversity and production in slope desert grassland of China to precipitation gradient experiment, which included five precipitation treatment levels (i.e., ambient precipitation as a control [0], ±20% and ±40% of ambient precipitation [-40%, -20%, +20% and +40%]). The extreme drought treatment (-40%) significantly reduced aboveground biomass (AGB) and plant growth (e.g. height, coverage and density) across three years, with no significant effect of increased precipitation treatments. This reduction in ecosystem function coincided with the reducing trend in productivity of forbs and grasses. The relative abundance of certain dominant species (Ajania fruticulosa) decreased, whereas the relative abundance of other dominant species (Stipa breviflora) increased; however, the reordering of species abundances under the extreme drought treatment was not confirmed. Meanwhile, species diversity did not change with precipitation treatments. Furthermore, species asynchrony was reduced by the extreme drought. Our results suggested that the decrease of ecosystem function indicated by AGB is mainly governed by plant growth and biomass of functional groups rather than community composition and diversity under precipitation alteration in the desert grassland. Based on data from the Gurbantunggut Desert, the largest fixed/semi-fixed desert in China, and ERA5-Land reanalysis data, the long-term variations and spatial surface heat source (SHS) differences in the Gurbantunggut Desert are discussed herein. The results show the following: (1) The hourly SHS at the Kelameili station during the 2013–2021 period was a weak heat source at night; contrastingly, it was a strong heat source during the day. The duration of the hourly SHS increased gradually from January to July, but it decreased gradually from July to December. The daily SHS showed obvious seasonal variation, reaching the maximum in summer and the minimum in winter. The ERA5-Land reanalysis can reproduce all the variation characteristics of the SHS well. (2) The climatology (i.e., multi-year mean) of the monthly SHS intensity was lower than 50 W/m2 during the January–March and September–December periods in the Gurbantunggut Desert, indicating a weak heat source. On the other hand, the climatology recorded in April–August was higher than 50 W/m2, with a strong heat source. From the perspective of spatial distribution, the eastern and western regions of the Gurbantunggut Desert show strong heat sources, while the central region shows weak heat sources. The spatial distribution of the first and second modes of the empirical orthogonal function (EOF) decomposition reflected the consistent spatial variability and a north–south (or east–west) polarity variation of the monthly SHS in the Gurbantunggut Desert, respectively. (3) The yearly SHS showed negative anomalies during the 1950–1954, 1964–1982 and 2004–2015 periods, and positive anomalies during the 1955–1963, 1983–2003 and 2016–2021 periods in the Gurbantunggut Desert. Additionally, the time series of the SHS anomalies was positively correlated with the Interdecadal Pacific Oscillation (IPO) index. During the negative IPO phase, the yearly SHS showed a negative anomaly in the Gurbantunggut Desert, while the yearly SHS showed a positive anomaly during the positive IPO phase in most regions of the Gurbantunggut Desert. In order to study the genetics of local adaptation in all main deserts of northwest China, whole genomes of 169 individuals were resequenced, which covers 20 populations of Zygophyllum loczyi (Zygophyllales: Zygophylaceae). We describe more than 15 million single nucleotide polymorphisms and numerous InDels. The expected heterozygosity and PIC values associated with local adaptation varied significantly across biogeographic regions. Variation in environmental factors contributes largely to the population genetic structure of Z. loczyi. Bayesian analysis performed with STRUCTURE defined four genetic clusters, while the results of principle component analysis were similar. Our results shows that the Qaidam Desert group appears to be diverging into two branches characterized by significant geographic separation and gene flow with two neighboring deserts. Geological data assume that it is possible that the Taklamakan Desert was the original distribution site, and Z. loczyi could have migrated later on and expanded within other desert areas. The first successful sand-control was achieved in the Mu Us Desert by local people in the 1950–1960s, and their experience and approach have been extended to the whole Ordos and Northern China since then. The objective of this paper is to assess comprehensively the effectiveness of sand-control in 15 counties in and around Mu Us using multitemporal satellite images and socioeconomic data. After atmospheric correction, Landsat TM and OLI images were harnessed for land cover classification based on the ground-truth data and for derivation of the GDVI (generalized difference vegetation index) to extract the biophysical changes of the managed desert and desertification. Climatic, socioeconomic, environmental and spatial factors were selected for coupling analysis by multiple linear and logistic regression models to reveal the driving forces of desertification and their spatial determinants. The results show that from 1991 to 2020, 8712 km2 or 63% of the desert has been converted into pastures and shrublands with a greenness increase of 0.3509 in GDVI; the effectiveness of sand-control is favored by the rational agropastoral activities and policies; though desertification occurs locally, it is associated with both climatic and socioeconomic factors, such as wind speed, precipitation, water availability, distance to roads and animal husbandry. The Hobq Desert (HD) locates at the northern margin of the Ordos Plateau, China and the transition zone to the Hetao Basin. It is one of the main proximal deserts of the Loess Plateau, and its formation was controlled by the evolution of the Yellow River and the Ordos Plateau. It is still worthy of discussing the regional structure to enhance the understanding of the desert formation and paleoenvironment, especially with the additional works in the eastern part. Geophysical methods including gravity, magnetic, EM (electromagnetic) are often used to analyse the regional and near-surface structure. As for drilling records, they could show the lithology sequence directly and be applied for the environmental study (e.g., OSL dating). Therefore, in this paper, we used the satellite gravity data, GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar), TEM (Transient electromagnetic method) and drilling records with borehole resistivity data to analyse the desert structure from different scales and the paleoenvironment. Trough the upward continuation and Park-Oldenburg calculation for the gravity data, the thickness of Quaternary deposits is 0.85–1.55 km. The inferred faults indicated the performance of the Hetao Basin and the Ordos Plateau's uplift in Pleistocene, which also contributed to HD's formation and existing topography. A three-part structure within 350 m was revealed in the profile at eastern HD by EM data. The upper layer within 80–90 m was the aeolian dry sand, the middle one was mainly fluviolacustrine saturated sand with the occurrence of clay and grey calcareous root tubes, and the lower one might be the aeolian sand. This near-surface structure was consistent to the western part, and the forming period for the sand in the upper zone was thereby estimated no earlier than 80 Ka. Abstract Multiangle Implementation of Atmospheric Correction (MAIAC) is a new aerosol algorithm developed to retrieve aerosol optical depth (AOD) over land using the time series data to dynamically isolate aerosol and land contributions. However, there are still no comprehensive research on the quality of MAIAC AOD over China. In this paper, 1 km MAIAC AOD over China were examined against ground-based measurements to evaluate the performance of the data. In general, Aqua and Terra MAIAC retrievals have a high correlation coefficient (0.924 for Aqua and 0.933 for Terra) with ground-based observations and there are more than 72% of retrievals falling within the Expected Errors (EE = ±(0.05 + 0.2*AOD)). We found that the accuracy of MAIAC AOD is related with the AOD magnitude, aerosol size, seasons and surface types. In spring and summer, the AOD bias was influenced by both aerosol model and surface reflectance estimation. We also found that the aerosol model is the main source of AOD bias over desert regions. These results indicated that the MAIAC AOD could be used as a new aerosol data source for air quality and climate studies in China. Desert farmland provides food for desert areas, but water is the main limiting factor of this region, thus desert farmland has an extremely fragile ecological environment. This study investigated the temporal and spatial variations of vegetation NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) in the Ulan Buh Desert, China, from 1990 to 2022, using long-term Landsat satellite data obtained from the Google Earth Engine platform and local statistical data. The results showed that from 1990 to 2022, the NDVI exhibited relatively small fluctuations and a steady increase. Furthermore, the study analyzed the impact of climate factors, namely precipitation and temperature, on NDVI, and collected the groundwater lever changes under irrigation and farmland development. The results demonstrated a positive correlation between NDVI and both precipitation and temperature from 1990 to 2006. The study area experienced an overall trend of increasing humidity. Specifically, from 1990 to 2006, significant positive correlations with precipitation and temperature were observed in 4.4% and 5.5% of the region, respectively. From 2007 to 2022, significant positive correlations were observed in 5.4% and 72.8% of the region for precipitation and temperature, respectively. These findings suggest that temperature has become increasingly influential on vegetation NDVI, while the impact of precipitation remains relatively stable. Moreover, the study assessed the impact of human activities on vegetation NDVI. The results revealed that from 1990 to 2006, human activities contributed to 43.1% of the promotion of local vegetation NDVI, which increased to 90.9% from 2007 to 2022. This study provides valuable insights into the dynamics of vegetation in the Ulan Buh Desert and its response to climatic changes and human activities. One of the key and difficult points in seismic data processing is seismic data denoising. Under the influence of the acquisition environment, the collected seismic data usually have low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and low resolution. In desert region of western China, different from other regions, the random noise there has complex characteristics of non-Gaussian, non-stationary and non-linearity. Its main frequency is quite low and its spectral overlap with those of effective signals. Moreover, large amount of data and intelligent requirements make traditional denoising methods encounter difficulties. In addition, the existing deep learning denoising methods also reveal two problems: first, they can only effectively suppress simple seismic noise such as Gaussian noise. But for the case of desert noise, they usually mistakenly judge noise as effective signals and destroy signal characteristic structure. Second, what is more important, in supervised-based methods paired noisy and pure data are usually used as training set. However, there is no noise-free data in actual desert seismic data, which severely limits the processing performance of supervised-based networks. Thus, a new parameter-shared variational auto-encoding adversarial network (PS-VAAN) is proposed for desert seismic data denoising in this paper. This new method includes two encoders, two generators and two discriminators. It can realize domain conversion from noisy data domain to pure data domain. We construct relatively complete unpaired pure and noisy data training sets for training, and design reconstruction loss function and adversarial loss function to optimize network parameters. Moreover, cycle-consistency loss is introduced to make sure two domains mapping into the same space. The arid regions of northwestern China are dominated by extensive areas of mobile sand dunes. These features cause environmental problems and exert global climatic impacts; however, due to the lack of systematically-applied indicators of aeolian activity, direct evidence of past changes in aeolian activity is unreliable, especially for aeolian sand source regions. In this paper, we analyze the end-member (EM) distributions of various types of surface soil across the Tengger Desert in northwestern China, and devise a sensitive proxy for aeolian activity using a spatio-temporal substitution approach. This proxy is then used to evaluate a Quaternary aeolian succession and to understand the response of aeolian activity to regional climate change. Our results suggest that gradual increases in the coarse-grained EM components 3–5 reflect enhanced dune mobility and reduced vegetation coverage, which are a direct function of the intensity of regional aeolian activity. In the aeolian section, coarse- and medium-grained sand layers resemble modern semi-mobile and mobile dunes, whereas fine-grained sand layers are analogous to vegetated fixed/semi-fixed or semi-mobile dunes. Combining this record with independent multi-proxy evidence from the same section leads us to conclude that strong aeolian activity coincided with a dry climate, sparse vegetation cover, and strong surface winds during the Last Glacial Maximum, and that these conditions gradually attenuated at the beginning of the Last Deglacial. These inferences are in accord with independent paleoclimate records from this region, confirming that the intensity of aeolian activity in the southeastern Tengger Desert is closely associated with large-scale climate change. Our findings show that our EM proxy can be used to infer the intensity of aeolian activity and to reliably reconstruct the evolution of deserts in northwestern China. Soil wind erosion is an important factor that inhibits social activities and economic development in the arid desert region of northwestern China. In order to reveal the distribution of soil wind erosion climate erosivity in the arid desert region of northwestern China, the spatial and temporal variation and transfer characteristics of wind erosion climate erosivity in the region were evaluated by referring to China's regional ground long-time series meteorological element driving data, and applying the ArcGIS software analysis. The study results show that: (1) Against a backdrop that such meteorological factors as precipitation amount, wind speed, and average temperature over multiple years all increase progressively decade by decade, the wind erosion climate erosivity in the northwest arid desert region is decreasing as a whole. The C values of most areas are within the range of 0 to 100. However, the climate erosivity in the hinterland and a few areas is increasing, with C values higher than 150. (2) The monthly variation of the C value varies significantly. The greatest variation occurs in spring and summer, followed by the variation in winter, while the slightest variation occurs in autumn. Through the abrupt change test, it is found that the wind erosion climate erosivity in spring has the strongest variation, with four abrupt change points and a pattern of long-term fluctuating decline. (3) The soil wind erosion in the region gradually decreases from the hinterland to the peripheral areas, with the areas highly affected by erosion increasing yearly. (4) The spatial-temporal transfer and variation of wind erosion climate erosivity present an overall pattern of slight decrease. However, in some areas, they increase or show an apparent trend of increase. The study results have provided relevant theoretical evidence and scientific support for preventing and controlling wind–sand disasters in the arid desert region of northwestern China. Habitat quality has great significance in terms of regional ecological conservation and human welfare. In this study, we evaluated the spatial and temporal characteristics of land use and habitat quality in the temperate desert sub-region of the Ordos Plateau using patch-generating land use simulation (PLUS) and integrated valuation of ecosystem services and trade-offs (InVEST) models. From 2000 to 2020, the areas of grassland, cropland, and unused land in the study area increased significantly; the areas of water bodies and woodland increased slightly; and the area of wasteland decreased significantly. Moreover, the habitat quality in the temperate desert subzone of the Ordos Plateau showed a trend of initial increase and then decrease between 2000 and 2020. The areas of lower and low habitat quality first decreased and then increased, and the overall area decreased over time. Conversely, the areas of high and higher habitat quality initially increased and then decreased, and the overall area increased over time. The area of medium habitat quality first decreased and then increased, although the overall change was minimal. Based on the PLUS model, the predicted habitat quality of the study area in 2025 under the natural development scenario was compared to that predicted under the ecological conservation scenario. The comparison of results showed higher habitat quality and lower habitat degradation under the ecological conservation development scenario. These results can be used to provide a scientific basis and decision reference for the sustainable use of land resources and encouragement of high-quality socio-economic development in the temperate desert sub-region of the Ordos Plateau. The atmospheric temperature profiles (ATPs) retrieved through the geostationary Interferometric Infrared Sounder (GIIRS) onboard the FY-4A satellite (GIIRS/FY-4A) can effectively fill the gap of the scarce conventional sounding data in the Taklimakan Desert (TD), the second largest desert in the world, with an area of 330,000 square kilometers. In this study, we take the experimental radiosonde observations (RAOB) from one RAOB station in the hinterland of TD and seven conventional radiosondes in the oasis region around the desert as the true values and analyze the bias distribution characteristics of GIIRS/FY-4A ATPs with quality control (QC) flags 0 or 1 for this region. In addition, a bias comparison is made with GIIRS/FY-4A ATPs, and the fifth generation ECMWF atmospheric reanalysis of the global climate (ERA5) ATPs. The results show that (1) Missing measurements in GIIRS/FY-4A ATPs are the most frequent in the near-surface layer, accounting for more than 80% of all the retrieved grid points. The averaged total proportion of GIIRS/FY-4A ATPs with QC marks 0 or 1 is about 33.06%. (2) The root mean square error (RMSE) of GIIRS/FY-4A ATPs is less than 3 K, smaller than that of ERA5 ATPs. The RMSE of ERA5 ATPs can exceed 10 K in the desert hinterland. The absolute mean biases of GIIRS/FY-4A ATPs and ERA5 ATPs are, respectively, smaller than 3 K and 2 K, the former being slightly larger. The correlation coefficients of GIIRS/FY-4A ATPs with ERA5 ATPs and RAOB ATPs are higher than 0.98 and 0.99, respectively, and the correlation between GIIRS/FY-4A ATPs and RAOB ATPs is inferior to the latter. (3) The overall atmospheric temperature retrieved by GIIRS/FY-4A is 0.08 K higher than the temperature of RAOB, on average, while the overall temperature from ERA5 is 0.13 K lower than that of RAOB, indicating that the temperature profile obtained by integrating GIIRS/FY-4A ATPs and ERA5 ATPs may be much closer to RAOB ATPs. (4) The probability density of the GIIRS/FY-4A ATP biases in the TD region generally follows the Gaussian distribution so that it can be effectively assimilated in the 3-D variational assimilation modules. The probability density distribution characteristics of the GIIRS/FY-4A ATP biases in the desert hinterland and oasis are not much different. However, due to the fusion analysis of the relatively rich multi-source conventional observation data from the oasis stations, the probability density of ERA5 ATPs biases at the oasis stations is nearer to Gaussian distribution than that of the GIIRS/FY-4A ATPs. In the desert hinterland, where conventional observation is not enough, the probability density distributions of the ATPs biases from ERA5 and GIIRS/FY-4A are alike. Xinjiang is in northwest China and has abundant desert sand. Replacing natural sand with sand from deserts is an urgent need and could be used in making polyethylene fiber−engineered cementitious composite (PE−ECC). The interfacial bonding properties of desert sand PE−ECC (DSPE−ECC) were made using the optimal mix proportion (30% desert sand content, 2% fiber volume) and the laboratory's previous research results. Normal sand PE−ECC (NSPE−ECC) and DSPE−ECC at different test ages (3, 7, 14, and 28 days) were subjected to uniaxial tensile tests, and a method for determining bonding properties is proposed. Scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction were used to analyze the development of PE−ECC fiber and matrix and the formation of hydration products. The results indicated that the cracking loads of the DSPE−ECC at 3, 7, 14, and 28 days increased by 16.72%, 28%, 23.23%, and 10.05%, respectively. Desert sand had low water content and high water absorption, which slowed down the rate of C2S, C3S combining with water molecules to form C−S−H, and had a great influence on the bonding properties of ECC at 3 days. However, the bonding properties of DSPE−ECC were only slightly less than those of NSPE−ECC at 28 days, and the bonding properties had gradually stabilized. Desertification, a current serious global environmental problem, has caused ecosystems and the environment to degrade. The total area of desertified land is about 1.72 million km2 in China, which is extensively affected by desertification. Estimating land desertification risks is the top priority for the sustainable development of arid and semi-arid lands in China. In this study, the Mediterranean Desertification and Land Use (MEDALUS) model was used to assess the sensitivity of land desertification in China. Based on multi-source remote sensing data, this study integrated natural and human factors, calculated the land desertification sensitivity index by overlaying four indicators (soil quality, vegetation quality, climate quality, and management quality), and explored the driving forces of desertification using a principal component and correlation analysis. It was found that the spatial distribution of desertification sensitivity areas in China shows a distribution pattern of gradually decreasing from northwest to southeast, and the areas with very high and high desertification sensitivities were about 620,629 km2 and 2,384,410 km2, respectively, which accounts for about 31.84% of the total area of the country. The very high and high desertification sensitivity areas were mainly concentrated in the desert region of northwest China. The principal component and correlation analysis of the sub-indicators in the MEDALUS model indicated that erosion protection, drought resistance, and land use were the main drivers of desertification in China. Furthermore, the aridity index, soil pH, plant coverage, soil texture, precipitation, soil depth, and evapotranspiration were the secondary drivers of desertification in China. Moreover, the desertification sensitivity caused by drought resistance, erosion protection, and land use was higher in the North China Plain region and Guanzhong Basin. The results of the quantitative analysis of the driving forces of desertification based on mathematical statistical methods in this study provide a reference for a comprehensive strategy to combat desertification in China and offer new ideas for the assessment of desertification sensitivity at macroscopic scales. The exchange of energy between the land surface and atmosphere is dependent upon crucial parameters, including surface roughness, emissivity, bulk transfer coefficients for momentum (CD) and heat (CH). These parameters are calculated through site observation data and remote sensing data. The following conclusions are drawn: (1) the aerodynamic roughness of the Gurbantunggut Desert measures 1.1 × 10−2 m, which is influenced by the varying conditions of the underlying surface. The roughness decreases as wind speed increases and is seen to be directly proportional to the growth of vegetation. From April to June, the aerodynamic roughness increases with increasing vegetation cover, but begins to gradually decrease after July. Spatially, the middle regions show higher roughness values than the eastern and western areas. In the central part of the desert, the roughness is between 2.37 × 10−2 m and 2.46 × 10−2 m from April to November. The northwest and northeast regions measure 1.41 × 10−2 m–2.04 × 10−2 m and 1.53 × 10−2 m–2.39 × 10−2 m, respectively. (2) The surface emissivity is 0.93, and it varies depending on the snow and vegetation present in the underlying area. (3) CD and CH exhibit an inverse relationship with wind speed. When wind speed falls below 6 m/s, the CD declines rapidly as wind speed increases. In contrast, once wind speed surpasses 6 m/s, the propensity for the CD to decrease with increasing wind speed slows down and approaches stability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is a difficult and hot issue in the hydrological studies of arid areas to choose suitable methods to evaluate the recharge of atmospheric precipitation to groundwater and its response to climate change in desert areas. This study reviews the theories and problems of vadose (unsaturated)-zone tracing methods selected by predecessors in hydrological studies and takes the deserts in middle latitudes of northern China as an example to extract decadal, centennial, and millennian information of atmospheric precipitation to groundwater recharge on a regional scale since the late Holocene. The fluctuations of atmospheric precipitation and chronological sequences of desert unsaturated zone were estimated by using the chlorine mass balance (CMB) theory. It indicates that the Badain Jaran Desert in the central Alashan Plateau and the surrounding Gobi deserts have experienced fluctuations of groundwater recharge on a centennial scale during the late Holocene period from about 700 to 2000 years ago. Multiple CMB profile records can identify four periods of relative wetness (1330–1430, 1500–1620, 1700–1780, and 1950–1990) and three periods of relative drought (1430–1500, 1620–1700, and 1900–1950) over the past millennium. These records are consistent with other paleoclimatic records in the northern margin of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, and relatively correspond to those in the eastern part of China. This indicates that groundwater recharge in the Alashan Plateau broadly reflects the degree of climatic variability in northwest China over the centennial scale and may be affected by the changes in the intensity of the East Asian summer monsoon. The estimated average recharge rate of precipitation in the Alashan Plateau in the last millennium is about 1.3~2.6 mm/a, which brings new geological evidence for understanding the source of groundwater recharge in the region but is quite different from other environmental records. It should be noted that there are uncertainties in the CMB records of the vadose zone profiles, mainly due to the assumption of atmospheric Cl input in the CMB estimation and the selection of the homogeneous vadose profile (piston flow). This study suggests that this uncertainty and its error should be extensively tested in the future by comparing deterministic data (such as regional reference stations) with large-scale random atmospheric Cl input backgrounds. In this paper, we examine the Early to Middle Holocene evolution of a prominent group of ground-water fed lakes in the southeastern hinterland of the Badain Jaran Desert (BJD) of northwest China. Specifically, we describe a sediment profile record from the Taoerlegetu (TR) palaeolake basin using multiple proxies of total organic carbon (TOC), total nitrogen (TN), C/N ratio, δ13C org , grain size and mineral composition based on a well-dated trench profile. As C/N values suggest that sedimentary organic matter mainly originated from aquatic plants, δ13Corg values can be used as a qualitative proxy for water level because aquatic plants in different biotopes (water depth) have different δ13C values. Our results show that from 10.9 to 9.1 cal kyr B.P., water level rose slowly, and aquatic macrophytes occupied the lake basin. From 9.1 to 5.5 cal kyr B.P., water level reached an even higher level and phytoplankton replaced macrophytes as the major contributor to organic matter. The humid episode of the lakes in the hinterland of the BJD in the early Holocene might be related to the increased groundwater supply from the northeast region of the Tibet Plateau. These findings are consistent with earlier studies of lacustrine and peat sediments found in periphery of the modern lake group, which indicate that their geographic extent may have been larger in the past. A relative drought period recorded in the studied succession from 8.5 to 8.0 cal kyr B.P. marks an interval of reduced ground-water transport from the Tibet Plateau. This interval probably corresponds to the "8.2 ka cold event" and provides evidence that this widespread climate episode influenced groundwater processes across inland Asia. • The δ13C org value could be used as a qualitative indicator for the change of water level. • Lakes in the hinterland of the Badain Jaran Desert shows different evolution progress with these in the edge. • The main water source of lakes in the hinterland of the BJD in the Early Holocene comes from the Tibet Plateau.
