Today, the growth in textile consumption is influenced by the increasing population. This leads to the generation of a large volume of textile waste, which has a negative impact on the environment. Textile waste is mainly disposed of by landfill or incineration. To reduce the amount of textile waste disposed of, it can be recovered and transformed into valuable compounds, such as ethanol (bioethanol). This article describes how pre- and post-consumer textile waste is used as a feedstock for ethanol.

The primary objective of this research was to ascertain the optimal circumstances for the successful growth of black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa (Michx.) Elliott) using tissue culture techniques. Additionally, the study aimed to explore the potential use of machine learning algorithms in this context. The present research investigated a range of in vitro parameters such as total number of roots (TNR), longest root length (LRL), average root length (ARL), number of main roots (NMR), number of siblings (NS), shoot length (SL), shoot diameter (SD), leaf width (LW), and leaf length (LL) for Aronia explants cultivated in different media (Murashige and Skoog (MS) and woody plant medium (WPM)) with different concentrations (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2 mg L−1) of indole-3-butyric acid (IBA). The study showed that IBA hormone levels may affect WPM properties, affecting the LRL and ARL variables. Aronia explant media treated with 2 mg L−1 IBA had the greatest TNR, NMR, NS, SL, and SD values; 31.67 pieces, 2.37 pieces, 5.25 pieces, 66.60 mm, and 2.59 mm, in that order. However, Aronia explants treated with 1 mg L−1 IBA had the highest LW (9.10 mm) and LL (14.58 mm) values. Finally, Aronia explants containing 0.5 mg L−1 IBA had the greatest LRL (89.10 mm) and ARL (57.57 mm) values. In general, the results observed (TNR, LRL, ARL, NMR, NS, SL, SD, LW, and LL) indicate that Aronia explants exhibit superior growth and development in WPM (25.68 pieces, 68.10 mm, 51.64 mm, 2.17 pieces, 4.33 pieces, 57.95 mm, 2.49 mm, 8.08 mm, and 14.26 mm, respectively) as opposed to MS medium (20.27 pieces, 59.92 mm, 47.25 mm, 1.83 pieces, 3.57 pieces, 49.34 mm, 2.13 mm, 6.99 mm, and 12.21 mm, respectively). In the context of the in vitro culturing of Aronia explants utilizing MS medium and WPM, an analysis of machine learning models revealed that the XGBoost and SVM models perform better than the RF, KNN, and GP models when it comes to making predictions about those variables. In particular, the XGBoost model stood out due to the fact that it had the greatest R-squared value, and showed higher predictive ability in terms of properly forecasting values in comparison to actual outcomes. The findings of a linear regression (LR) analysis were used in order to conduct an efficacy study of the XGBoost model. The LR results especially confirmed the findings for the SD, NS, and NMR variables, whose R-squared values were more than 0.7. This demonstrates the extraordinary accuracy that XGboost has in predicting these particular variables. As a consequence of this, it is anticipated that it will be beneficial to make use of the XGboost model in the dosage optimization and estimation of in vitro parameters in micropropagation studies of the Aronia plant for further scientific investigation.

The purpose of this article is to investigate and analyze the practices of scientific management within the County Departments of Sports and Youth (CDSY) in Romania. Conducted through a comprehensive research endeavor spanning from January to June 2022, the study utilized a standardized questionnaire as its primary instrument for data collection, distributed among CDSY directors. A notable finding from the study indicates that a significant proportion of respondents (44.9%) perceive notable disparities in the normative-functional elements governing the National Sports System in Romania compared to international standards. Moreover, the majority (51%) consistently adhere to regulatory acts, while a substantial portion (69.4%) underscore the importance of strict adherence to internal regulations in strategy formulation. Furthermore, an overwhelming majority (88.9%) acknowledge the substantial influence of available resources on strategy development, with collaboration with authorities primarily occurring through direct communication channels. Respondents prioritize multiple objectives (44.9%), affirm the necessity of various competencies (53.1%), and identify a lack of human and financial resources (59.2%) as the most significant obstacle. Notable achievements highlighted in the study include the improvement of the county's sports performance (53.1%). Respondents also believe that setting clear and realistic objectives (38.8%) is pivotal to enhancing CDSY management, while considerations in formulating strategies emphasize trends in the sports domain (42.9%) and the specific needs of the local sports community (42.9%). Background and Objectives: The risk of developing glycemic dysregulation up to overt diabetes mellitus (DM) after an episode of acute pancreatitis (AP) is increasingly being analyzed. We aimed to assess the changes in serum glucose levels associated with the first episode of AP, as well as the impact of dysglycemia on outcomes such as the severity of inflammation, the length of hospitalization, mortality, and the persistence of hyperglycemia at follow-up. Materials and Methods: All patients experiencing their first episode of AP, who presented to the Emergency Room (ER) between 1 January 2020 and 31 December 2023, were retrospectively included. On-admission serum glucose and peak serum glucose during hospitalization were the biological markers used to assess glucose metabolism impairment, and they were correlated with outcomes of AP. Results: Our study included 240 patients, 46.67% (112 patients) having a biliary etiology for an AP flare. Patients with COVID-19-associated AP exhibited the highest on-admission and peak serum glucose levels (244.25 mg/dL and 305.5 mg/dL, respectively). A longer hospital stay was noted in patients with peak serum glucose levels of ≥100 mg/dL (9.49 days) compared to normoglycemic patients (6.53 days). Both on-admission and peak glucose levels were associated with elevated CRP levels during hospitalization. A total of 83.78% of patients who received antibiotics exhibited on-admission hyperglycemia, and 72.07% had peak serum glucose levels of ≥100 mg/dL. The presence of hyperglycemia at follow-up was associated with both on-admission and peak serum glucose levels of ≥100 mg/dL, as well as with a longer stay, higher CRP levels, and antibiotic use during index admission. Conclusions: On-admission hyperglycemia predicts a higher inflammatory response in patients at the first episode of AP, while the presence of hyperglycemia during hospitalization is associated with imaging and biological severity and longer hospitalizations, indicating a more severe disease course. It is imperative to comprehend the determinants shaping entrepreneurial intent, especially during pivotal junctures when individuals are navigating career decisions. This research endeavors to scrutinize the entrepreneurial intent of university students, with a specific focus on the sports domain, and examine the potential impact of their involvement in sports activities on said entrepreneurial intent. The participants comprised 415 students from the academic sports domain in four cities in Romania (Pitesti, Alba-Iulia, Cluj-Napoca, and Sibiu). They were administered a 35-item questionnaire and subsequently categorized into four groups based on their sports background: individuals and team sports participants with a competitive history, amateur athletes, and non-practitioners. The questionnaire demonstrated strong internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha coefficient = 0.755). A test of homogeneity across criteria such as competitive sports involvement, type of competitive sports, and engagement in amateur sports revealed significant differences in five out of 45 comparisons. Furthermore, this study employs an explanatory approach to elucidate the distinctions among athletes, amateur, and non-athlete students in academic sports programs regarding: comfort and security in workplace stability, embracing risk-taking for gains, proactive problem-solving, expectations from superiors, work ethic and goal orientation, workload and productivity relationship, task completion and challenge acceptance, work avoidance and problem management, work-life balance prioritization, openness to personal development, parallels between sports and business strategies, taking initiative and responsibility, entrepreneurial determination, comfort zone preference and adaptation after sports career. Circulating cell-free DNA (ccfDNA) quantity correlates with the clinical characteristics and prognosis of various cancer types. We investigated whether ccfDNA levels and the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) have prognostic value in patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Peripheral blood was collected from 82 patients with PDAC prior to any diagnostic procedure or the administration of chemotherapy. Plasma DNA was isolated, and ccfDNA concentration and NLR were determined. We found that ccfDNA levels were correlated with age and tumor burden. Moreover, higher values of NLR (≥3.31) were linked with worse overall survival (OS) (4 vs. 10 months; log rank p = 0.011), and an elevated ccfDNA concentration (≥25.79 ng/mL) was strongly associated with shorter OS (4 vs. 8 months; log rank p = 0.009). According to the results of the multivariable Cox regression analysis, the baseline concentration of ccfDNA was an independent prognostic factor for OS (HR 0.45, 95% CI 0.21–0.97, p = 0.041). Furthermore, the combination of ccfDNA levels with NLR greatly enhanced the prognostic accuracy of PDAC patients. Our study demonstrates that ccfDNA concentration and NLR are independent predictors of survival in PDAC. Common Agricultural Policy represents the main instrument of the European Union for the development of agriculture and rural areas. European funds are vital for the productivity and competitiveness of agricultural holdings, as well as for the transfer of agricultural knowledge and innovation. Supporting small and young farms is essential for the vitality of rural areas and for the renewal of generations of farmers. The aim of this work is to transfer agricultural knowledge in order to improve the productivity of agricultural holdings, especially among young farmers and small farms. We implemented training program through European funds related to Measure 1. “Actions for knowledge transfer and information actions” from Rural Development Programme of Romania. The characteristic of 100 participants and their responses were analyzed. Most of the participants were young people up to 40 years old (59%). The vast majority of the participants were from the rural area and only 17% were from the urban area. 53% from participants were strongly agree with the fact that level of knowlegde influence farm productivity. Actions for knowledge transfer improve the adaptation of farmers to the new challenges of agriculture, as well as productivity.

Problem Statement and Approach: This study assessed managers' perceptions of their ability to devise independent strategies within the County Directorate for Sport and Youth (CDSY) programs. The study's objective is to identify the pivotal independent variables influencing their activity reports. By analyzing correlations between dependent and independent variables, this study evaluates the strength and direction of these associations and their consequent impact on the dependent variable. This comprehensive examination provides valuable insights into managers' perspectives on the development of independent strategies within the plans and projects of the CDSY. Background & Aims: Non‐selective β‐blockers (NSBBs) and endoscopic variceal‐ligation (EVL) have similar efficacy preventing first variceal bleeding. Compensated and decompensated cirrhosis are markedly different stages, which may impact treatment outcomes. We aimed to assess the efficacy of NSBBs vs EVL on survival in patients with high‐risk varices without previous bleeding, stratifying risk according to compensated/decompensated stage of cirrhosis. Methods: By systematic review, we identified RCTs comparing NSBBs vs EVL, in monotherapy or combined, for primary bleeding prevention. We performed a competing‐risk, time‐to‐event meta‐analysis, using individual patient data (IPD) obtained from principal investigators of RCTs. Analyses were stratified according to previous decompensation of cirrhosis. Results: Of 25 RCTs eligible, 14 failed to provide IPD and 11 were included, comprising 1400 patients (656 compensated, 744 decompensated), treated with NSBBs (N = 625), EVL (N = 546) or NSBB+EVL (N = 229). Baseline characteristics were similar between groups. Overall, mortality risk was similar with EVL vs. NSBBs (subdistribution hazard‐ratio (sHR) = 1.05, 95% CI = 0.75–1.49) and with EVL + NSBBs vs either monotherapy, with low heterogeneity (I2 = 28.7%). In compensated patients, mortality risk was higher with EVL vs NSBBs (sHR = 1.76, 95% CI = 1.11–2.77) and not significantly lower with NSBBs+EVL vs NSBBs, without heterogeneity (I2 = 0%). In decompensated patients, mortality risk was similar with EVL vs. NSBBs and with NSBBs+EVL vs. either monotherapy. Conclusions: In patients with compensated cirrhosis and high‐risk varices on primary prophylaxis, NSBBs significantly improved survival vs EVL, with no additional benefit noted adding EVL to NSBBs. Background & Aims: Real-world assessments of efficacy and safety of advanced therapies used for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) patients are limited. We aimed to report safety, efficacy and treatment persistence of new molecules (infliximab, adalimumab, vedolizumab, tofacitinib, ustekinumab) in a retrospective multicentric national Romanian analysis. Methods: We conducted a nationwide, retrospective observational multicentric study. Data were collected retrospectively from electronic and paper files. Patients who started on one of the five investigated molecules during December 2019-December 2021 were included. The main outcome measures were clinical remission, endoscopic healing, persistence on treatment and safety data. Results: A total of 678 adult patients from 24 Romanian IBD centers with a diagnosis of ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease were included. Participants had previously failure to one (268, 39.5%), two (108, 15%) or more treatment lines and only 38% (259) were biologic naïve. In the 24 months study period, most patients were started on vedolizumab (192, 28%), followed by adalimumab, infliximab, ustekinumab and tofacitinib. In biologic-naïve patients, most physicians (72%) preferred anti-TNF treatment as first line biologic (93 patients started on infliximab, 92 on adalimumab), followed by vedolizumab, ustekinumab and tofacitinib. During follow-up, 71% (470, p=0.05) of patients achieved clinical remission and 36% (134, p=0.03) achieved mucosal healing. The 6 months milestone for persistence was reached in 78% (530) of cases. Almost half of patients (47%, 316 patients) persisted on their current treatment for over 12 months. Overall, an adverse reaction was reported for 67 (10.4%) patients, with no lethal events. Conclusions: Population of biologic-experienced IBD patients in Romania is increasing and is becoming more difficult to achieve long-term disease control. The current European Union Common Agricultural Policy 2014 – 2020 places particular emphasis on the implementation of environmentally friendly agricultural technologies and the preservation of spontaneous and agricultural biodiversity. In order to promote more sustainable agricultural production, the actual Common Agricultural Policy conceived three main ecological commitments applied by farmers managing 10 or more hectares of arable land. These greening measures are crop diversification, maintaining permanent grassland and declared “ecological focus areas”. The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the implementation of agricultural practices beneficial for the climate and the environment in a medium-size Romanian agricultural holding. The case study was carried out in a private medium – size farm with the main activity represented by cereals crops from Olt county located in southern Romania. In order to be more environmental – friendly and to access the European funds for agriculture, farmer applied for greening direct payment in period 2016 – 2018. The culture scheme for crop diversification was the same, but proportion of crops was different. Ecological Focus Areas on the agricultural holding were represented by nitrogen-fixing crops (green peas culture). Application of green measures increased the farmland biodiversity, agricultural productivity and the level of farm income provided by direct payments.

Grapevine is a perennial crop whose growth and productivity can be affected by many pedoclimatic and agrotechnological factors. Currently, land terracing is a common field organization for new vineyard plantations, reducing slope on the cultivated land, and for the introduction of new areas for agricultural production. One of these pedoclimatic factors is the position of vines on vineyard slope. The aim of this paper was to assess the effect of the grapevine position on the field slope on growth expressed by pruning weight and on cold hardiness of bud and cane grapevine. The research used relatively simple methods and it was conducted in a commercial hillside vineyard from Samburesti viticultural region in Romania. The grapevines used for this study were represented by three red grape varieties: Vitis vinifera L. cv. Cabernet Sauvignon, Vitis vinifera L. cv. Merlot, and Vitis vinifera L. cv. Feteasca Neagra. Annual growth of grapevine and cane maturation in the previous growing season was influenced by slope positions. The lowest pruning weight was recorder in Merlot planted at the top of the vineyard slope. For all grapevine cultivars we found statistically significant differences between vines cultivated on the top of slope and vines cultivated on the foot of slope.

Vegetable growing as an important branch of horticulture ensure agricultural food products with relatively low content in calories, nutrient rich and contain fibre in order to promote health and well-being. The aim of this paper is to provide for the scientists, researchers, and farmers a detailed picture for Romanian vegetables sector in order to increase the performance of vegetables holdings. In order to improve vegetable yield and quality, and the competiveness of vegetables farms, investments in farms and attraction of funds represent important measures for management of vegetable production. Romania has a strong tradition of family farms. In Romania is an important potential for the production of vegetables in the field, and organic vegetables production, due mainly to the high natural fertility of soils, traditions for vegetables growing, and the diversity of the climate. In the field of agriculture, new institutions have been set up and many financial instruments have been introduced for the development of the agricultural sector and for the improvement of the conditions in the rural areas. Currently, agriculture is supported by payment instruments from the national budget and European funds. In recent years, the amount of vegetables and the value of exports have an upward trend, while the quantity and value of vegetable imports has a downward trend.

Grapevine is one of the most important horticultural perennial crops grown in many countries from worldwide. In this paper, we review the global benefits of arbuscular mycorrhiza application for grapevine production and the impact of viticultural practices for these natural microorganisms to establish symbiotic associations with vine roots. This review aims to provide a brief overview of the status of and to outline the most important application and effects of AMF in viticulture in order to increase the sustainability of vineyards. Viticulture has to adapt to new challenges of pest and chemicals fertilizers management, climate change, global urbanization, land erosions, increasing droughts, world population growth and others factors that can affect the sustainability of viticultural production systems. One of eco-friendly approaches is to use the application of arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (AMF). Response of grapevine to AMF application demonstrated a lot of benefits for viticultural ecosystems. Technologies on sustainable agriculture and conservation of ecosystems vineyards may consider arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi as biofertilizers. Arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi could be an effective tool for improving the agro-enviromental perfomance in viticultural farms.

Simple Summary: The available chemotherapeutic regimens for metastatic pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (mPDAC) in Romania include FOLFIRINOX (FFX), gemcitabine-based regimens (GB), and gemcitabine monotherapy (Gem). The purpose of our study was to compare the efficacy of FFX, GB, and Gem in patients with mPDAC in real-world scenarios. Our research revealed that the overall survival (OS) of patients receiving FFX or GB was comparable, twice as long as that of patients receiving Gem, and the progression-free survival (PFS) was highest for patients receiving FFX as first-line chemotherapy (L1). Male gender, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Performance (ECOG-PS) 0/1, the FFX regimen, and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) > 4.15 were all independently linked to a longer OS. L1 with FFX improved both OS and PFS for second-line chemotherapy (L2). Purpose: To assess the efficacy of FOLFIRINOX(FFX), gemcitabine-based regimens (GB), and gemcitabine monotherapy (Gem) in patients with metastatic pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (mPDAC). Methods: This is a retrospective study that included 83 patients with mPDAC treated with first-line chemotherapy (L1) with either FFX, GB or Gem between 2015 and 2017. Progression-free survival (PFS) for L1 and second-line chemotherapy (L2) (PFS-L1 and PFS-L2) and overall survival (OS) were estimated using the Kaplan–Meier method. Results: Median PFS-L1 for FFX, GB and Gem groups was 9 months (95% (Confidence Interval) CI 2.76–15.24), 5 months (95%CI 3.44–6.56), and 5 months (95%CI 3.76–6.24), respectively (p = 0.04). OS was 14 months (95%CI 11.16–16.85), 12 months (95%CI: 9.44–11.56), and 7 months (95%CI: 5.7–8.3) for patients treated with FFX, GB, and Gem, respectively (p = 0.0001). ECOG-PS (0/1) (Hazard Ratio (HR) 6.74, p = 0.002), age > 70 years (HR 0.25, p = 0.04), body tumors (HR 2.8, p = 0.048), CA19–9 > 39 U/mL (HR 0.26, p = 0.02), and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) > 4.15 (HR 6.76, p = 0.001) were independent prognostic factors for PFS-L1. Male gender (HR 3.02, p = 0.026), ECOG-PS (0/1) (HR 4.21, p = 0.003), L1 with FFX (HR 0.255, p = 0.007), and NLR > 4.15 (HR 2.65, p = 0.04) were independent prognostic factors of OS. PFS-L2 (HR 6.91, p = 0.013) and OS-L2 (HR 6.95, p = 0.037) were significantly higher in patients first treated with FFX. Conclusions: The OS of patients who receive FFX or GB is comparable. The best PFS-L1 belongs to the FFX group. Male gender, ECOG-PS 0/1, the FFX regimen, and NLR > 4.15 were independent predictors of OS. PFS-L2 and OS-L2 were favorably impacted by L1 with FFX. Strawberry is one of the first horticultural species introduced in the plant tissue culture technology. Nowadays microprogation technology is one of the most important techniques to produce plants with high quality and resistance to biotic and abiotic stress factors. The researches were carried out in the Biotechnology and Physiology laboratory of University of Pitesti, with the following cultivars of strawberry: Premial, Elsanta and Senga Sengana. The purpose of this study was to examine the reaction of strawberry in vitro cultures on different kinetin concentration. Terminal buds were dissected and cultured on Lee and Fossard medium (1977). The explants were incubated in a growth chamber under 16/8 h light/dark cycle at 22 – 24 oC. LF medium supplemented with kinetin (1.25 mg l-1) was found best for culture survival for all strawberry cultivars. Percentage survival of explants increased with increase in kinetin concentration from 0.5 mg l-1 to 1.25 mg l-1 for all strawberry cultivars.

Variation in light intensity, air temperature and relative air humidity leads to diurnal variations of photosynthetic rate and leaf relative water content. In order to determine the diurnal changes in net photosynthetic rate of vine plants and influence of the main environmental factors, gas exchange in the vine leaves were measure using a portable plant CO2 analysis package. The results show that diurnal changes in photosynthetic rate could be interpreted as single-peak curve, with a maximum at noon (10.794 μmol CO2 m-2 s-1). Leaf relative water content has maximum value in the morning; the values may slightly decrease during the day (day of June, with normal temperature, no rain, no water restriction in soil).

Environmental growing farm technology involves utilization of agricultural inputs which are friendly with the production and ecosystem. Seaweed extracts are used as biofertilizers in horticulture in special to increase plant growth and productivity. In this study, we investigated the effect of seaweed extracts made from Ascophyllum nodosum, on vegetative growth of Vitis vinifera cv. Feteasca Alba. We used three different concentrations of seaweed extracts to asset the effect on fertility coefficients, shoot length, shoot diameter and leaf area. All treatments with seaweed extract showed a stimulatory effect for studied parameters. The plants treated with the higher levels of seaweed concentrate produced the highest absolute fertility coefficient and relative fertility coefficient relative to the plants treated with lower concentration of or untreated control plants. Foliar spray application at different concentration of seaweed extract of Ascophyllum nodosum influenced the vegetative growth expressed by leaf area of vine stock. The results indicate that the 170 ml-1hl concentration of seaweed extract showed the higher enhanced of growth parameters in grapevine.

Background and Objectives: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic conditions with an unpredictable course and a remitting–relapsing evolution. Fatigue is a frequent complaint in patients with IBD, affecting approximately half of the newly diagnosed patients with IBD. The aim of this study was to analyze fatigue in patients with IBD in remission. Materials and Methods: One hundred nineteen consecutive outpatients diagnosed with IBD for over 3 months that were in corticosteroid-free clinical and biochemical remission at the time of assessment were included in this cross-sectional study. Out of them, 72 (60.5%) were male; the median age was 39 years (IQR 30–47). Seventy-seven patients (64.7%) were diagnosed with Crohn's disease and forty-two (35.3%) with ulcerative colitis, with a median disease duration of 6 years (IQR 2–10). Fatigue, health-related quality of life (HR-QoL), anxiety and depression were evaluated using the following self-administered questionnaires: FACIT Fatigue, IBDQ 32 and HADS. Results: The mean FACIT-Fatigue score was 41.6 (SD ± 8.62), and 38.7% of patients were revealed as experiencing fatigue when a cut-off value of 40 points was used. The mean IBDQ 32 score was 189.4 (SD ± 24.1). Symptoms of anxiety and depression were detected in 37% and 21% of the patients, respectively. In the multivariate analysis, fatigue was significantly associated with lower HR-QoL (OR 2.21, 95% CI: 1.42–3.44, p < 0.001), symptoms of anxiety (OR 5.04, 95% CI: 1.20–21.22, p = 0.008), female sex (OR 3.32, 95% CI: 1.02–10.76, p = 0.04) and longer disease duration (OR 1.13, 95% CI: 1.01–1.27, p = 0.04). Conclusions: Fatigue is highly prevalent even in patients with inactive IBD and is correlated with lower HR-QoL and anxiety, as well as with clinical factors such as longer disease duration and female sex. Post liver transplantation (LT) fibrosis has a negative impact on graft function. Cytokine production in the host immune response after LT may contribute to the variable CYP3A-dependent immunosuppressive drug disposition, with subsequent impact on liver fibrogenesis, together with host-related factors. We aimed to investigate whether the cytochrome P4503A5*3 (CYP3A5*3) or TBX21 genotypes impact post-LT liver fibrogenesis. Furthermore, the impact of immunosuppressants on cellular apoptosis has been evaluated using human hepatocytes harvested from cirrhotic explanted livers. We have enrolled 98 LT recipients that were followed for occurrence of liver fibrosis for at least 12 months. There was a statistically significant higher trough level of TAC in patients with homozygous CC-TBX21 genotype (7.83 ± 2.84 ng/ml) vs. 5.66 ± 2.16 ng/ml in patients without this genotype (p = 0.009). The following variables were identified as risk factors for fibrosis ≥2: donor age (p = 0.02), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio (p = 0.04) and TBX21 genotype CC (p = 0.009). In the cell culture model cytometry analysis has indicated the lowest apoptotic cells percentage in human cirrhotic hepatocytes cultures treated with mycophenolate mofetil (MMF) (5%) and TAC + MMF (2%) whereas the highest apoptosis percentage was registered for the TAC alone (11%). The gene expression results are concordant to cytometry study results, indicating the lowest apoptotic effect for MMF and MMF + TAC immunosuppressive regimens. The allele 1993C of the SNP rs4794067 may predispose to the development of late significant fibrosis of the liver graft. MMFbased regimens have a favourable anti-apoptotic profile in vitro, supporting its use in case of LT recipients at high risk for liver graft fibrosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Agricultural production systems currently face multiple challenges: Climate change, natural resource depletion, and supply chain disruption, together with global population growth. As sustainable agriculture must simultaneously deliver myriad services (e.g. provide food security, maintain natural resources, retain and improve framers' profitability, and sustain biodiversity), a systemic and multidisciplinary approach is thus needed. In this context, new technologies based on sensors, automatic machines, robots, and digital applications show much potential. The special section of the Agronomy Journal, entitled, "Agricultural and Biological Sciences: Plant, Soil, Animal and Environment Nutrient Management," brings together a coherent set of research studies. All papers published in this special section address current, relevant topics for agriculture, biology and environmental sciences with a multidisciplinary approach aimed at generating new scientific information on digital technologies, bioinformatics, plant science, soil resources, agricultural waste, and environmentally conscious approaches. A total of 58 papers were submitted, each of which was evaluated by expert reviewers using a double‐blind reviewing process and 25 full text papers were accepted for publication in the special section. The present paper highlights the findings of the published papers, with the aim of bringing cutting‐edge innovation to applied research in agriculture and biology. The published papers here provide new knowledge and viable solutions for better performance in agricultural and biological sciences. New technologies will change the concept of farming and agribusiness making it more profitable, efficient, safer, attractive, simple, smart, and finally sustainable. Pancreatic exocrine and endocrine dysfunctions often come together in the course of pancreatic diseases as interdependent manifestations of the same organ. However, the mechanisms underlying the bidirectional connection of the exocrine and endocrine pancreas are not fully understood. In this review, we aimed to synthetize the current knowledge regarding the effects of several exocrine pancreatic pathologies on the homeostasis of β-cells, with a special interest in the predisposition toward diabetes mellitus (DM). We focused on the following pancreatic exocrine diseases: chronic pancreatitis, acute pancreatitis, cystic fibrosis, pancreatic cancer, pancreatic resections, and autoimmune pancreatitis. We discuss the pathophysiologic mechanisms behind the impact on β-cell function and evolution into DM, as well as the associated risk factors in progression to DM, and we describe the most relevant and statistically significant findings in the literature. An early and correct diagnosis of DM in the setting of pancreatic exocrine disorders is of paramount importance for anticipating the disease's course and its therapeutical needs. Background and Objectives: Inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are chronic conditions with an unpredictable evolution that can have a negative impact on patients' quality of life (QoL). Even though patients in remission have a better QoL compared to patients with active disease, they still have a lower QoL compared to healthy people. The aim of this study is to identify the factors that are associated with a lower QoL in patients with IBD in clinical remission, in a tertiary IBD center in Romania. Materials and Methods: Ninety-seven adult patients with a current diagnosis of IBD for over 3 months who were in clinical remission were enrolled in this study. Pregnant women, patients with ostomy, perianal disease, extraintestinal manifestations or other significant comorbidities were excluded. Out of the 97 patients, 63.9% were men. The median age was 39 years (IQR 29–47), and the median disease duration was 5 years (IQR 2–10). Disease activity was assessed using the SCCAI score for ulcerative colitis and HBI score for Crohn's disease. Remission was defined for SCCAI score ≤ 1 and HBI score ≤ 4. The health-related quality of life (HR-QoL) was assessed using the IBDQ32 score. FACIT-Fatigue was used to evaluate the level of fatigue. Patients with symptoms of anxiety or depression were identified with the HADS score. Symptoms of anxiety were considered when HADS-A >7 points and symptoms of depression when HADS-D >7 points. Results: Sixty-five patients (67%) were diagnosed with CD and the remaining 32 (33%) with UC. Ninety-three patients (95.9%) were on biological therapy. The mean IBDQ score (total score) was 190.54 points (SD +/− 8.2). The mean FACIT Fatigue score was 42.5 (SD +/− 8.2), with 6.2% of patients suffering from severe fatigue (FACIT Fatigue < 30 points). A total of 33% of patients had symptoms of anxiety and 16.5% of depression. Exposure to more than one biologic therapy (p = 0.02), fatigue (p < 0.001) and symptoms of anxiety (p < 0.001) were associated with a lower HR-QoL in the multivariate analysis. Female patients, patients with Crohn's disease, patients with anemia and patients with symptoms of depression also had a lower HR-QoL, but this did not reach statistical significance in our study. Conclusions: Exposure to a higher number of biological agents (patients that switched multiple biologics), the presence of fatigue and symptoms of anxiety impair the HR-QoL of patients with IBD in clinical remission. Further studies should assess in a prospective manner whether early identification of these factors with prompt clinical interventions could lead to a better HR-QoL in these patients.
