Information about several papers discussed at Second Global Conference on Contraception and Sexual and Reproductive Health and the 14th congress of the European Society for Contraception and Reproductive Health (ESC) held from 4-7 May 2016, at Basel, Switzerland is presented. Topics include reproductive health care and cultural and political issues of reproduction. The author reflects on ESC congress. He states that conference focused on reproductive health issues and its solutions.

The aim of the present paper is to present the message transmitted by the Presidential Lecture given during the first congress of arthroscopy organised in Romania, in March 2016, by the Romanian Society of Arthroscopy and Sports Trauma (SRATS). The goal was to present the evolution of medical care in Romania over the years, with the remarkable progress made in the first half of the twentieth century and the current status of arthroscopic surgery as seen from the point of view of medical professionals, as well as from a governmental point of view. Background: COVID-19 has reinforced the centrality of health workers at the core of a well performing and resilient health system. It has concomitantly exposed the risks of staffing and skills shortages and the importance of protecting the health workforce. This paper focuses on highlighting some of the lessons learnt, challenges and future needs of the health workforce in Europe in the context of COVID-19. Methods: We use secondary sources and expert information. Results: During the pandemic innovative and flexible approaches were implemented to meet increasing demand for health workers and new skills and responsibilities were adopted over a short period of time. We have seen the rapid adaptation and use of new technologies to deliver care. The pandemic has underlined the importance of valuing, protecting and caring for our health workforce and the need to invest appropriately and adequately in the health workforce to have sufficient, capable and wellmotivated health workers. Some of the main challenges that lie ahead of us include the imperative for better investment, to need to improve recruitment and retraining whilst better retaining health workers, a focus on domestic sustainability, redeploying and developing new skills and competences among health workers, enabling more effective multi-professional collaboration and team work, improving the quality of education and training, increasing the public health focus and promoting ethical and sustainable international recruitment of health workers. Conclusions: The WHO European Region through its European Programme of Work 2020-2025 is fully committed to support countries in their efforts to continue to respond to COVID-19 and whilst addressing upcoming health workforce challenges. An introduction is presented in which the editor discusses various reports within the issue on topics related to the European Wound Management Association (EWMA) including the importance of patients' voice to improving wound care, patient self-help in the management of chronic wounds, and the journey of a patient post-amputation wound care.

We present a report on the recent symposium on dementia and depression in older adults, held in Ohrid, Macedonia and discuss the urgent need for development of psychogeriatric and affiliated services in the Southeast European region. The limited epidemiological data from nine countries in this region suggest high variability of prevalence rates for mental health problems in older adults (>65 years of age). At the moment, there are over 520,000 older adults in the region living with dementia alone. The prevalence rates for dementia (%) are either similar to those of the developed countries (9-9.6% in build-up northern Greece and Albania, respectively) or substantially lower (3.6-4% in rural northern Greece and Montenegro, respectively). The latter may be due to either cultural diversity or lack of adequate medical health service provision and expertise to recognize and diagnose dementia. Indeed, there is a lack of organized specialized services for older adults with mental health problem in the region. The symposium raised the awareness of this problem in the region and called for networking between isolated individuals working in this field to improve the current situation and facilitate further development of adequate clinical services to meet the growing needs of the older adults in the countries of the Southeast Europe. Across Europe, the role of the welfare state is constantly being questioned and even eroded. At the same time, funding sources for post-graduate medical education and training are under attack as regulators review the working relationships between physicians and industry. Both of these issues have profound consequences for cardiologists and their patients, and were, therefore, chosen as the themes of the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA) 2014 Spring Summit held at Heart House, Sophia Antipolis, 25-26 March 2014. The meeting noted that some of the changes are already affecting patient care standards and that this is exacerbated by a reduction in research and education programmes. The principle conclusion was that EHRA must find better means of engagement with the authorities across Europe to ensure that its views are considered and that ethical patient care is preserved. Participants were particularly alarmed by the example from Sweden in which future healthcare planning appears to exclude the views of physicians, although this is not yet the case in other countries. The demand for greater transparency in relationships between physicians and industry was also discussed. Although intended to eliminate corruption, concern was expressed that such moves would cause long-term damage to education and research, threatening the future of congresses, whose role in these areas appears underestimated by the authorities. The article offers information on the first Central European Haemophilia Interactive Forum for Opinion Leaders in Haemophilia, held in Budapest, Hungary in May 2013 to discuss improving access to quality care for haemophilia patients. Topics discussed include improving professional education of specialists about haemophilia, assessment of haemophilia care in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) countries, and immune tolerance induction (ITI) therapy.
