Corn-peanut intercropping is an important element of China's agricultural planting model as it confers ecological benefits and increases yield. The aim of this study was to explore the productivity differences between intercropping and monoculture by using the 13C isotope tracer labelling method. Corn hybrid Denghai 618 (DH618) and peanut variety Huayu 22 (HY22) were used as test materials under three planting methods, single corn, SM; single peanut, SP; and corn-peanut intercropping, IM and IP, respectively, during two growing seasons. The results showed that IM increased yield by 59.7% and 62.3% compared with SM, respectively. IP reduced yield by 31.3% and 32.3% compared with SP, respectively. IM significantly increased the photosynthetic rate, leaf area, 13C assimilation distribution, and dry matter accumulation of summer corn, which led to an increase in the kernel number and grain yield. The decrease in intercropped peanut yield was mainly caused by a decrease in the full-pod rate and number of pods per plant. The decrease in peanut yield did not affect the production of intercropping benefit due to the larger intercropping advantage and land equivalence ratio. Corn-peanut intercropping yielded greater economic benefits than monoculture. These results showed the utility of the peanut-corn intercropping model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aims: To realize the so-called "Second Green Revolution", it is imperative to study the roots of crop plants, and identify those traits that improve the efficiency of nitrogen (N) acquisition. We aimed to evaluate how the N acquisition efficiency of six hybrid maize lines commonly grown in northern China depends on their root anatomy. Methods: Maize hybrids classified as having high nitrogen uptake efficiency (HNUE) and low nitrogen uptake efficiency (LNUE) were grown under high-N and low-N conditions in the greenhouse and the field. Results: Under N stress in the field and the greenhouse, HNUE increased shoot dry weight, root length density, N content and nitrogen use efficiency compared to LNUE. Low N availability increased the percentage of root cortical aerenchyma and the size of cortical cells. Root anatomy, with greater formation of root cortical aerenchyma and larger cortical cell size, was associated with increased specific nitrogen absorption efficiency (SNAE) and shoot biomass under N stress. Under low N availability, the percentage of aerenchyma and their total area had significant positive correlations with the shoot dry weight, total N uptake, SNAE. Conclusions: The results suggest that plants in limited N availability form more root cortical aerenchyma and have larger cortical cells, which is of benefit to root growth, soil exploration, N acquisition, and shoot biomass. These observations support the hypothesis that root anatomical phenotypes that affect the metabolic and construction costs of producing root length merit consideration as selection criteria for breeding to improve N acquisition in hybrid maize. Controlled release urea (CRU) has been widely adopted to increase nitrogen (N) use efficiency and maize production, but the impacts can range widely depending on water availability in the soil. In an experiment using Zhengdan 958 (a popular summer maize hybrid), three levels of water treatments (adequate water condition [W3], which maintained soil moisture at about 75% ± 5% of the soil’s field capacity; mild water stress [W2], which maintained moisture content at 55% ± 5% of field capacity; and severe water stress [W1], which had a moisture content of 35% ± 5% of field capacity) and four levels of controlled release urea fertilizer (N0, N1, N2 and N3 were 0, 105, 210 and 315 kg N ha–1, respectively) were compared in a rainout shelter system with soil. The results revealed that CRU had significant effects on maize yields and N use efficiencies under different water conditions. The mean yields increased with increasing water levels and showed significant differences. Under W1, the accumulation of dry matter and N were limited, and N internal efficiency (NIE) and the apparent recovery efficiency of applied N (REN) decreased with N increases; yields of N1, N2, and N3 were similar. Under W2, the dry matter and N accumulation, as well as the yield, showed an increasing trend with an increase in N application, and the NIE and REN of N3 showed no difference from N2. Under W3, yields of N2 and N3 were similar and they were significantly higher than that of N1, but the agronomic N use efficiency (ANUE), REN, and the physiological NUE (PNUE) of N2 were 54.2, 34.9, and 14.4% higher, respectively, than those of N3. N application beyond the optimal N rate did not consistently increase maize yield, and caused a decrease in N use efficiencies. Highest overall dry matter, N accumulation, and yields were observed with N3 under W2, and those showed no differences with N2 and N3 under W3. Under this experimental condition, the CRU of 210 kg ha–1 was optimized when soil moisture content was 75% ± 5% of field capacity, but an N rate of 315 kg ha–1 was superior when soil moisture content during the entire growing season was maintained at 55% ± 5% of field capacity. A field experiment was performed to study the effects of waterlogging on the leaf mesophyll cell ultrastructure, chlorophyll content, gas exchange parameters, chlorophyll fluorescence, and malondialdehyde (MDA) content of summer maize (Zea mays L.) hybrids Denghai605 (DH605) and Zhengdan958 (ZD958). The waterlogging treatments were implemented for different durations (3 and 6 days) at the third leaf stage (V3), the sixth leaf stage (V6), and the 10th day after the tasseling stage (10VT). Leaf area index (LAI), chlorophyll content, photosynthetic rate (Pn), and actual photochemical efficiency (ΦPSII) were reduced after waterlogging, indicating that waterlogging significantly decreased photosynthetic capacity. The chloroplast shapes changed from long and oval to elliptical or circular after waterlogging. In addition, the internal structures of chloroplasts were degenerated after waterlogging. After waterlogging for 6 d at V3, the number of grana and grana lamellae of the third expanded leaf in DH605 were decreased by 26.83% and 55.95%, respectively, compared to the control (CK). Those in ZD958 were reduced by 30.08% and 31.94%, respectively. Waterlogging increased MDA content in both hybrids, suggesting an impact of waterlogging on membrane integrity and thus membrane deterioration. Waterlogging also damaged the biological membrane structure and mitochondria. Our results indicated that the physiological reactions to waterlogging were closely related to lower LAI, chlorophyll content, and Pn and to the destruction of chloroplast ultrastructure. These negative effects resulted in the decrease of grain yield in response to waterlogging. Summer maize was the most susceptible to damage when waterlogging occurred at V3, followed by V6 and 10VT, with damage increasing in the wake of waterlogging duration increasing. In the Huang-Huai-Hai region of China, continuous rain is the main meteorological constraint for summer maize, accompanied by stresses of both waterlogging and shading. To evaluate the independent and combined effects of shading and waterlogging on summer maize at different stages, a field experiment was performed to study the grain yield, crop growth, and canopy functionality of summer maize in response to waterlogging (W), shading (S), and their interaction for a 6 day period starting at the third leaf stage (V3), the sixth leaf stage (V6), and the tasseling stage (VT). Shading, waterlogging, and their combination stress (S+W) significantly decreased the grain yield of summer maize. Among these, the simultaneous stress induced greater yield losses than single stresses at any growth stage. The reduction of yield induced by waterlogging at early and late stages differed from 20–40 % to 3–16 %. Shading at VT stage induced most serious losses of grain yield. The grain yield of summer maize was closely related with the crop biomass accumulation. Shading, waterlogging, and their combination stress significantly decreased leaf area index resulting in serious reduction of the radiation interception. Besides, the leaf SPAD value and photosynthetic rate were also significantly reduced by the stresses, which led to notable reduction in radiation use efficiency (RUE) of summer maize. Thereby, the total accumulated crop biomass was decreased. Moreover, the biomass partitioning to ears was decreased. Accordingly, the 1000-kernel weight and kernels per ear were decreased by the stresses, leading to yield losses. This study explored the differential responses of radiation interception, canopy functionality, and RUE to waterlogging, shading, and their combined stress at different growth stage, furthering our understanding on the yield and growth for summer maize crops under persistent rainfall conditions. • The response of yield components to combined stress at different stage was differed. • Waterlogging at early stage reduced radiation interception and RUE decreasing yield. • Shading at VT lowered incident radiation, decreased kernel setting reducing the yield. • The combined effects of shading and waterlogging on grain yield was greater than single stress. Irrigation, fertilization, and cultivation managements play important roles in crop production in the North China Plain (NCP). This study aims to compare crop yields, and water and N use efficiencies (WUE and NUE) in a wheat–maize cropping system under different integrated management practices and recommend the best management practices (BMPs). A two-year experiment involving four integrated management practices was conducted in Tai’an City, Shandong Province in the NCP. These management practices were designed as follows: (1) traditional farming practice (FP); (2) optimized combination of cropping and fertilization (OPT-1); (3) practice for high yield (HY), which does not consider the cost of resource inputs to maximize grain yield; and (4) further optimized combination of cropping and fertilization (OPT-2), which is based on the HY practice. Soil water movement, nitrate transport, and crop growth were all simulated using the soil water, heat, carbon, and N simulation (WHCNS) model. Results indicated that simulated soil water content and nitrate concentration at different depths in soil profiles, leaf area index, dry matter weight, and grain yield were all in good agreement with the field-measured data. Simulation results indicated that the amounts and dates of irrigation and fertilization, planting method, planting density, and sowing date had obvious effects on grain yield, water drainage, total N loss, WUE, and NUE. The annual average total N loss under the OPT-1 practice decreased by about 28.6% compared with the FP practice, whereas the annual average grain yield and NUE increased by 27.7% and 25.7%, respectively. The largest annual average grain yield and total N loss occurred in the HY practice (23,590 kg ha −1 and 240.6 kg N ha −1 , respectively). Although the annual average grain yield of the OPT-2 practice was 15.4% lower than that of HY practice, the NUE was 19.2% higher in OPT-2 than in HY. The annual average nitrate leaching under the OPT-2 practice was the lowest and reached 25.5%–60.0% compared with those under other practices. Among the four practices, the OPT-2 practice achieved the most preferable results; the lowest N loss and the highest NUE were obtained at the expense of a slight decrease in grain yield. Therefore, the OPT-2 practice was the BMPs among the four practices and should be recommended to maximize the economic and environmental benefits in the study region. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
