In this paper, we provide a hierarchical coordination framework for connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) at two adjacent intersections. This framework consists of an upper-level scheduling problem and a low-level optimal control problem. By partitioning the area around two adjacent intersections into different zones, we formulate a scheduling problem for each individual CAV aimed at minimizing its total travel time. For each CAV, the solution of the upper-level problem designates the arrival times at each zones on its path which becomes the inputs of the low-level problem. The solution of the low-level problem yields the optimal control input (acceleration/deceleration) of each CAV to exit the intersections at the time specified in the upper-level scheduling problem. We validate the performance of our proposed hierarchical framework through extensive numerical simulations and comparison with signalized intersections, centralized scheduling, and FIFO queuing policy. In this article, we establish a decentralized optimal control framework for connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) crossing multiple adjacent, multilane signal-free intersections to minimize energy consumption and improve traffic throughput. Our framework consists of two layers of planning. In the upper level planning, each CAV computes its optimal arrival time at each intersection recursively along with the optimal lane to improve the traffic throughput. In the low-level planning, we formulate an energy-optimal control problem with interior-point constraints, the solution of which yields the optimal control input (acceleration/deceleration) of each CAV to cross the intersections at the time specified by the upper level planning. Moreover, we extend the results of the proposed bi-level framework to include a bounded steady-state error in tracking the optimal position of the CAVs. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework through simulation for symmetric and asymmetric intersections and comparison with traditional signalized intersections. Shared mobility can provide access to transportation on a custom basis without vehicle ownership. The advent of connected and automated vehicle technologies can further enhance the potential benefits of shared mobility systems. Although the implications of a system with shared autonomous vehicles have been investigated, the research reported in the literature has exhibited contradictory outcomes. This paper addresses the problem of controlling the speed of a number of automated vehicles before they enter a speed reduction zone on a freeway. We formulate the control problem and provide an analytical, closed-form solution that can be implemented in real time. The solution yields the optimal acceleration/deceleration of each vehicle under the hard safety constraint of rear-end collision avoidance. The effectiveness of the solution is evaluated through a microscopic simulation testbed and it is shown that the proposed approach significantly reduces both fuel consumption and travel time. In particular, for three different traffic volume levels, fuel consumption for each vehicle is reduced by 19–22% compared to the baseline scenario, in which human-driven vehicles are considered, by 12–17% compared to the variable speed limit algorithm, and by 18–34% compared to the vehicular-based speed harmonization (SPD-HARM) algorithm. Similarly, travel time is improved by 26–30% compared to the baseline scenario, by 3–19% compared to the VSL algorithm, and by 31–39% compared to the vehicular-based SPD-HARM algorithm. We address the problem of optimally controlling connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) crossing an urban intersection without any explicit traffic signaling, so as to minimize energy consumption subject to a throughput maximization requirement. We show that the solution of the throughput maximization problem depends only on the hard safety constraints imposed on CAVs and its structure enables a decentralized optimal control problem formulation for energy minimization. We present a complete analytical solution of these decentralized problems and derive conditions under which feasible solutions satisfying all safety constraints always exist. The effectiveness of the proposed solution is illustrated through simulation which shows substantial dual benefits of the proposed decentralized framework by allowing CAVs to conserve momentum and fuel while also improving travel time. Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) have the potential to improve safety by reducing and mitigating traffic accidents. They can also provide opportunities to reduce transportation energy consumption and emissions by improving traffic flow. Vehicle communication with traffic structures and traffic lights can allow individual vehicles to optimize their operation and account for unpredictable changes. This paper summarizes the developments and the research trends in coordination with the CAVs that have been reported in the literature to date. Recognition of necessities of connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) is gaining momentum. CAVs can improve both transportation network efficiency and safety through control algorithms that can harmonically use all existing information to coordinate the vehicles. This paper addresses the problem of optimally coordinating CAVs at merging roadways to achieve smooth traffic flow without stop-and-go driving. We present an optimization framework and an analytical closed-form solution that allows online coordination of vehicles at merging zones. The effectiveness of the efficiency of the proposed solution is validated through a simulation, and it is shown that coordination of vehicles can significantly reduce both fuel consumption and travel time. Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) provide the most intriguing opportunity to optimize energy consumption and travel time. Several approaches have been proposed in the literature that allow CAVs to coordinate in situations where there is a potential conflict, for example, in signalized intersections, merging at roadways and roundabouts, to reduce energy consumption and optimize traffic flow. In this paper, we consider the problem of coordinating CAVs in a corridor consisting of multiple traffic scenarios. We formulate a two-level optimization problem in which we maximize traffic throughput in the upper-level problem, and derive a closed-form analytical solution that yields the optimal control input for each CAV, in terms of fuel consumption, in the low-level problem. We validate the effectiveness of the solution through simulation under 100% CAV penetration rate. Platoon formation with connected and automated vehicles (CAVs) in a mixed traffic environment poses significant challenges due to the presence of human-driven vehicles (HDVs) with unknown dynamics and control actions. In this paper, we develop a safety-prioritized receding horizon control framework for creating platoons of HDVs preceded by a CAV Our framework ensures indirect control of the following HDVs by directly controlling the leading CAV given the safety constraints. The framework utilizes a data-driven prediction model that is based on the recursive least squares algorithm and the constant time headway relative velocity car-following model to predict future trajectories of human-driven vehicles.
