Soil and climatic conditions allied to advanced forestry technologies have enabled the development of planted forests in some regions of Brazil with some of the highest productivity rates in the world. However, the intense use of agricultural inputs and mechanization of production and wood transportation imply significant environmental impacts, such as the emission of carbon and nitrogen compounds. The purpose of this paper is to compare a model of an Integrated Crop-Livestock-Forestry System with more conventional eucalyptus forestry using a Cleaner Production approach to demonstrate the economic and environmental advantages of such a system. This is based on an environmental, energy, and economic analysis integrating Life Cycle Assessment and Cleaner Production approaches. Life Cycle Inventories consist of primary data obtained from the states of Bahia, Espírito Santo and Minas Gerais in Brazil, in partnership with Forestry Producers and a Forestry Company, which is the largest producer of hardwood pulp in the world. The inventories of conventional short-cycle eucalyptus production systems to supply the Forestry Company were quantified from seedling preparation to harvesting operations. The following production systems were evaluated: Reference system – Planting + Replanting (S1); Planting + Regrowth (S2), and Crop-Livestock-Forestry (S3). The adoption of CP measures in S3 reduced the use of inputs by 35% and increased gross revenue compared to S1. The processes that most contributed to the impact categories analyzed were soil preparation, emissions of inputs used in the field, and mechanized harvesting. However, biogenic carbon sequestration included −783 kg CO 2 eq/m3 of wood for S1. The S2 system had lower impacts compared to S1. Integrated Crop-Livestock-Forestry System - S3 showed a better environmental performance for most of the impact categories analyzed and presented a better financial return compared with S1 and S2. The implementation of the CP measures in S3 provides an immediate payback. Based on the conditions of this study, the CP strategy for silviculture is an economically viable option to increase the net CO 2 sequestration of forest production. This research intends to promote the study of eucalyptus forest production under tropical conditions, using the combined use of LCA and CP approach presented in this study from primary data. The CP and LCA integration provided methodological advances and more detailed information on the environmental performance of short-cycle eucalyptus production by identifying operational practices for the analyzed systems yielding environmental and financial gains. CP proved to be effective in providing information for decision-making at the process level without losing the broader view of the environmental performance of the analyzed product systems. The migration of transgressive coastal dunes over urban and farming areas is commonly observed in the semi-arid northern coast of the Brazilian northeast. However, it is unusual in the humid tropical coast of southeastern Brazil. This paper aims to investigate the aeolian dynamics and the drivers of the burial process over the Itaúnas District, Espírito Santo State landscape, by transgressive coastal dunes. Methodological procedures consist of remote sensing techniques, geoprocessing, wind regime simulations, and mathematical calculations of migration rate parameters. Satellite images were georeferenced using ArcGIS 10.3 software and wind regime information was simulated using HYSPLIT software using wind reanalysis data. The results suggest a sediment transport rate of 44.98 kg/m/s, wind drift potential of 123.96 v.u. and dune migration rate estimated at 4.0 m/yr. It was found that the northern and western sectors of the studied dunefield have the highest migration rates towards the main access road, water resources and urban area. The values obtained are considered significant because it is a coastal segment subjected to a humid tropical climate. • New data on the burial process by moving dunes over Itaúnas District, Brazilian Southeast, are presented. • It is suggested that the cause of the burial process is associated with deforestation of beach ridge by human activity. • Obtained results suggest a dune mobility rate of 4.0 m/year. • Results obtained suggest a sediment transport rate in the order of 44.98 kg/m/s and a wind drift potential of 123.96 v.u. To understand the main environmental factors controlling the benthic foraminiferal distribution along continental slopes, and corroborate paleoenvironmental interpretations, we investigated benthic foraminiferal assemblages (total fauna >63 μm) and sedimentological data along six transects on the continental slope of the Espírito Santo Basin (ESB) between 18°20′ and 21°20′ S. Surface sediment samples (0–2 cm) were collected perpendicularly to the coast, from the upper (400 m) to the lower slope (3000 m). The density, taxonomic diversity and assemblage composition change with depth. The genus Globocassidulina dominates the upper and lower slope, whereas Bolivina is the most abundant taxon in the deepest lower slope. The differences in ecological preferences among the most abundant taxa allowed us to recognize five benthic foraminiferal groups, distributed in three main bathymetric sectors: upper, middle – lower, and lower slope. Group I (upper slope, 400 m) is characterized by the highest mean relative abundances of Globocassidulina rossensis , Trifarina spp. and Trifarina angulosa. Group II (middle – lower slope, 1000–1300 m) shows the highest mean relative abundances of Globocassidulina subglobosa , Bolivina albatrossi , Bulimina aculeata and Uvigerina peregrina. Group III (middle – lower slope, 1000–1300 m) is characterized by the highest mean relative abundances of Globocassidulina crassa , Gavelinopsis versiformis , Epistominella exigua and the unilocular group. Group IV (lower slope, 1900 m) shows the highest mean relative abundances of Alabaminella weddellensis , Bolivina inflata and E. exigua. Group V (lower slope, 2500–3000 m) is dominated by the genus Bolivina (B. lowmani , B. pseudoplicata and Bolivina spp). The most abundant taxa along the ESB slope are ecologically associated to the organic matter flux, bottom water oxygen concentration, and hydrodynamics conditions. The quantity and quality of food supply is the primary factor controlling the distribution of benthic foraminiferal assemblages along depth. Secondary factors include the properties of water masses, and intermediate and deep boundary currents. The increased fragmentation of benthic and planktic foraminifera tests (>125 μm) on the upper and middle – lower slope is related to abrasion during transport from shallower regions to the slope. • Recent benthic foraminiferal assemblages change markedly with depth. • Benthic foraminifera distribution is primarily ruled by the organic matter influx. • The organic flux is high on the upper slope due to the shelf-break upwelling. • Opportunistic species confirms the influence of the Vitoria Eddy in the primary productivity. • The properties of waters masses play a secondary role in the microfauna distribution.
