This paper argues for recognition of the centrality of relational pedagogy for student learning and the important role played by academic developers in supporting this. In the paper, the authors situate relational pedagogy within the context of contemporary marketized higher education, explore the nature and importance of relational pedagogy, and they illustrate some of the ways in which it may be developed and enacted. Academic developers play a significant role in supporting academics' understanding and practice of relational pedagogy. The Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of a relational pedagogy at a time when care and relationships with others have mattered more than ever. Teaching Odissi in the university space is not new to me. However, as a dancer-scholar located in India, teaching this dance form in a university in the United States expanded and deepened my understanding of this dance form and the ways it can be taught. This encounter, a collision of cultures, beliefs, and movement practices in the dance studio, engendered a pedagogical process that revealed itself as I taught this class over two semesters. The design of the class discussed in this article emerged from an intersection of my own training in Odissi with my guru and the institutional requirements of the program. This paper unpacks my pedagogical process of creating a syllabus, adopting teaching strategies, and assessing student work for negotiating the cultural chasm between me and my students, hoping to generate a sense of critical questioning, mutual curiosity, and respect. In the Swedish educational system, there has been a recent push for digital technology in different school subjects. This paper investigates what regulates Swedish physical education teachers' perceptions of digital technology in outdoor education. The results is reflected in a number of rules that govern Swedish physical education teachers' perceptions and use of digital technology in outdoor education. Findings suggest that teachers' views on the relevance of digital technology in outdoor education depends partly on curriculum formulations, but of significant importance are also other factors such as: the addressed knowledge area, grade level, choice of digital device, needs of students, and teachers' ideological beliefs. These rules are discussed in relation to the construction of outdoor education as knowledge area within physical education and in relation to the ways in which Swedish physical education teachers relate to curriculum changes. Adventure sports offer an exciting area of investigation regarding pedagogical best practices. Previous research points to the evolution of adventure sports coaching with the development and implementation of the PPTT (physical, psychological, technical, and tactical) framework. However, there is a missing area of consideration within the PPTT framework: the individual participating in the adventure sport. The growth and diversification of adventure sports necessitate consideration of language and reflection between the coach and athlete, and the current paper proposes the integration of a multicultural education lens to support this process. Thus, the main purpose of the current study was to investigate the utility of the PPTT as a framework to support reflective processes and as a common language to facilitate the coach–athlete relationship. This paper aims to present findings from a doctoral study on the underexplored practice of outdoor education in the Middle Eastern country of Lebanon. I first propose a working definition for outdoor education before introducing the study's findings that sought the perspectives of 30 Lebanese public and private primary school educators toward outdoor education and its integration in their teaching practice. Several perceived outdoor education benefits emerged from the participants' narratives, including the promotion of the children's emotional wellbeing, creativity, and motivation to learn. They also suggested many implementation challenges related to safety concerns, covering the concentrated curriculum, securing necessary funding, and weather conditions. Furthermore, the educators offered various ideas to integrate outdoor education in teaching languages, sciences, and social studies as well as in addressing environmental issues. Many sports programmes designed for children under five claim improvements in physical, social, and psychological outcomes. However, few have been subject to any form of inquiry. This paper reports an initial exploratory study of parental perceptions of an indoor bouldering programme designed for children younger than 6 when delivered in England. Six parents who accessed an average of four sessions took part in a telephone interview to gather initial perceptions, and to establish whether they felt that there had been changes in their children's and their own behaviour by attending the Rock Tots/Kids classes. Thematic analysis indicated that parents were generally positive about the programme, and could identify some changes in their children's intrapersonal, interpersonal, and climbing specific skills when participating in the sessions. Parents also reported changes in their own approaches to parenting. Suggestions for future research of sports programmes targeted at this age group are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we explore how advanced college students use the past history and experiences of others to understand the present while learning a foreign language through a content-integrated curriculum. To assess student learning we operationalize Norris (2006. "The Why (and How) of Assessing Student Learning Outcomes in College Foreign Language Programs." The Modern Language Journal 90 (4): 576–583) learning outcomes model (content, skills and dispositions) through linguistic indices. The learning is documented throughout a semester via learners' written production, comparing the changes and expansion in the use of meaning-making resources that demonstrate their understanding of others through choices in the wording, logical organization of texts, and their positioning in relation to those contents. The participants have varied language trajectories ranging from heritage to L2 language learners of Spanish. The findings show how a content and language integrated curriculum focusing on a historical theme (i.e. Southern Cone dictatorships) through a particular genre (i.e. film review) can reveal students' content, skills and dispositions in an L2. Learners demonstrated their developing capacities in a foreign language and history through their production of written texts that allow them to use knowledge about the past to interpret the present via academic genres. This paper addresses a problem that greatly complicates the implementation of dialogic educational approaches in schools: the dilemma between driving children's talk towards normatively accepted conceptions and, at the same time, avoiding the introduction of these normative conceptions into the dialogue by the teacher. I argue that this dilemma is in fact the expression of an unarticulated theoretical tension between teleology and dialogicity in Vygotsky's theory, which is the foundation, together with Bakhtin's work, for many dialogic approaches to education. This paper describes this tension in Vygotsky's theory and presents a type of talk that enables the articulation of teleology and dialogicity at a practical level: conceptually driven inquiry. In this type of talk, children form meaning spontaneously in conditions of dialogicity, but under the influence of a higher-generality meaning that the child simultaneously forms non-spontaneously – through intellectual imitation. Care delivery in neonatology is dependent on an interprofessional team. Collaborative learning and education amongst professionals can lead to successful management of critically ill patients. This focused BEME review synthesized the components, outcomes, and impact of such interprofessional education (IPE) programs in neonatal medicine. The authors systematically searched four online databases and hand-searched MedEdPublish up to 10 September 2020. Two authors independently screened titles, abstracts, full-texts, performed data extraction and risk of bias assessment related to study methodology and reporting. Discrepancies were resolved by a third author. We reported our findings based on BEME guidance and the STORIES (STructured apprOach to the Reporting in health education of Evidence Synthesis) statement. We included 17 studies on IPE in neonatal medicine. Most studies were from North America with varying learners, objectives, instruction, and observed outcomes. Learners represented nurses, respiratory therapists, neonatal nurse practitioners, patient care technicians, parents, early interventionists, physicians, and medical trainees amongst others. Risk of bias assessment in reporting revealed poor reporting of resources and instructor training. Bias assessment for study methodology noted moderate quality evidence with validity evidence as the weakest domain. IPE instruction strategies included simulation with debriefing, didactics, and online instruction. Most studies reported level 1 Kirkpatrick outcomes (76%) and few reported level 3 or 4 outcomes (23%). Challenges include buy-in from leadership and the negative influence of hierarchy amongst learners. This review highlights IPE program components within neonatal medicine and exemplary practices including a multimodal instructional approach, asynchronous instruction, an emphasis on teamwork, and elimination of hierarchy amongst learners. We identified a lack of reporting on program development and instructor training. Future work should address long term knowledge and skill retention and impact on patient outcomes and organizations. This study sheds light on how to develop inclusive pedagogy in higher education, from the point of view of 42 inclusive faculty members from 6 Spanish universities. A qualitative methodology was used through semi-structured in-depth interviews. Data analysis was inductive, using a system of categories and topics. The results reveal that the faculty members which develop inclusive pedagogy in general have beliefs linked to the social model of disability and inclusive education approaches. They do not usually have specific training or knowledge about disability. They design their curricula in a flexible and open way to accommodate all students. They show a positive attitude toward students with disabilities and use diverse and participatory teaching methodologies, giving prominence to students. These data are consistent with those found in previous studies and offer keys to those faculty members who are interested in developing an inclusive pedagogy at the university. This paper examines in detail how faculty members of six faculties of educational sciences develop a theoretical framework comprising beliefs, knowledge, designs and actions. The research has found that faculty members hold beliefs about disability based on the social model of disability and inclusive approach. In general, inclusive faculty members' knowledge of disability and attention to diversity issues is scarce. The design of courses and teaching programmes led by inclusive university faculty is characterised by being open, flexible and providing clear and detailed information to students. Faculty who develop inclusive pedagogy use varied, participative and active methodologies, which are combined with a positive and approachable attitude towards students with disabilities. The objective of the ASPIRE award programme of the International Association for Health Professions Education is to go beyond traditional accreditation processes. Working in partnership with the ASPIRE Academy, the programme aims to encourage and support excellence in health professions education, in part by showcasing and exemplifying best practices. Each year ASPIRE award applications received from institutions across the globe describe their greatest achievements in a variety of areas, one of which is curriculum development, where evaluation of applications is carried out using a framework of six domains. These are described in this paper as key elements of excellence, specifically, Organisational Structure and Curriculum Management; Underlying Educational Strategy; Content Specification and Pedagogy; Teaching and Learning Methods and Environment; Assessment, Monitoring and Evaluation; Scholarship. Using examples from the content of submissions of three medical schools from very different settings that have been successful in the past few years, achievements in education processes and outcomes of institutions around the world are highlighted in ways that are relevant to their local and societal contexts. Engagement with medical education podcasts among health professions learners has been increasing steadily over the last several years. Prior '12 Tips' publications have focused on helping medical educators create and publish their own podcasts. However, there is a gap in available resources to help educators incorporate an already existing and growing library of medical education podcasts into their curriculum rather than create their own. People with intellectual and developmental disabilities have the right to access appropriate and comprehensive sexuality and relationship education (SRE), but face a long history of exclusion from SRE in the USA due to myths about the sexuality of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, biases against people with disabilities, and segregationist educational policies. Additionally, people with autism/autistic people are more likely to report having an LGBTQIA+ identity, and need comprehensive SRE content to become socially competent members of their communities. Teachers and other practitioners are often placed in the uncomfortable position of addressing many SRE topics while feeling unprepared, trying to stay aligned with educational policies, managing caregiver expectations, and providing scientifically accurate fact-based information in an increasingly politicised social climate. This paper provides recommendations on how to teach about LGBTQIA+ issues to students with intellectual and developmental disabilities including recommendations for modifying existing SRE curricula, identifying effective instructional strategies, and outlining a process for including LGBTQIA+ identities in SRE content. In newly multilingual communities, where the language of education can no longer be assumed to be the home language of students, debates around language education policy can reflect broader sociocultural and political assumptions. As Ireland has become increasingly diverse in recent decades, the core compulsory status of the Irish language has emerged as one of the most contested aspects of the national curriculum. Informed by the field of language ideology, this paper draws on the responses to a public consultation on exemptions from the study of Irish. The findings point to a deeply entrenched polarisation of opinion regarding the relationship between identity and language, with some evidence of ethnocentric beliefs. However, the analysis also offered a number of nuanced and counterintuitive perspectives as to how minority languages might be positioned to contribute to a more open and inclusive educational environment. School-based sex education has been a controversial issue in the province of Ontario, Canada. When an updated sex education curriculum was introduced by the provincial government in 2015, the media heavily covered negative reactions to the curriculum, and one distinct genre of reporting became modestly popular: the fact-checking article. These listicle-style articles presented and debunked common misunderstandings surrounding the curriculum and while they tried to appear as a neutral response to misinformation, fact-checking articles are no less value-laden than other responses to the curriculum. By examining two examples of these 'fact-checking' and 'myth-busting' articles published in The Toronto Star in 2015, I argue against the assumption that simply exposing the facts of a curriculum's content is enough to dispel the deep anxieties that surround sexual values in a pluralistic democracy like Canada. This paper instead suggests that the reassurance provided by fact-checking obscures the ways that conflict and uncertainty might present opportunities rather than obstacles to creating and sustaining inclusive comprehensive sex education. In coming decades, healthcare providers will treat a greater number of individuals living with Alzheimer's Disease and related dementias than ever. Simulation-based learning provides experiential learning opportunities to enhance clinical training, but little is known about how dementia simulation training improves understanding of dementia or how it changes in participants' ability to deliver high-quality healthcare to individuals living with dementia. In this study, we examine how a simulation training program may prepare healthcare trainees to treat individuals living with dementia. We conducted eight in-depth, one-on-one interviews with healthcare trainees who participated in the Virtual Dementia Tour (VDT) program and faculty who added VDT to their curricula, and also examined 20 reflection papers from students following participation in VDT. A thematic analysis of qualitative data led us to three themes: 1) dementia simulation complements and enhances traditional teaching methods, 2) dementia simulation helps students to understand the experiences of people living with dementia, and 3) experiential learning inspired students to reflect on actions they would take as clinicians and leaders to support individuals living with dementia and their families. Through qualitative analysis of a dozen semi-structured interviews, this study identifies the issues that limit the ability of accounting education programmes to prepare students for the workplace in Libya, a country in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region. Factors include: faculty's lack of practical experience; weak links with the profession; a traditional curriculum; teacher-centred pedagogy; traditional forms of assessment; the number and quality of students; limited or outdated resources; and poor physical infrastructure. As a study of the preparation of students for the workplace in a developing country, which takes account of both faculty and practitioner views, this paper also contributes to the limited literature on accounting education in Libya. Considering the findings through the lens of institutional theory concepts leads to recommendations for options that are likely to be relevant not only to Libya but also to the wider MENA region and other developing countries. Forty-five years ago, the first author of this paper surveyed the US medical schools to determine their offerings on EOL (End-of-Life) issues. The results showed limited exposure for medical school students to learn about dying and death, thus their "learning" was apparently on-the-job training. The EOL offerings were so limited that the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC), following the 1975 publication from the survey, contacted the first author to inquire about death and dying in the curricula of their medical schools. Apparently, it was so insignificant that the AAMC did not have such information. Palliative medicine, geriatric medicine, and hospice were then in the "birthing" process, a mere blur on the horizon. Today, as in 1975, it is likely that most medical students have personally had minimal experience with death and that for many entering students, other than on television, the cadaver is their first sight of a dead person. The objective of this research is a longitudinal study at five-year intervals since 1975 reporting on EOL education in US medical schools. The total number of medical schools has increased from 113 in 1975 to 150 in 2020. The current study surveyed medical schools electronically and via postal services with a response rate of 37%. Findings from the survey over time revealed significant inclusion of death and dying and palliative medicine as well as geriatrics and hospice. Gross anatomy has evolved from strictly hands-on to integrating 3D/virtual models, a change not without controversy. A noticeable difference in emphasis is obvious as care now plays a more significant role in medical training than previously, thus making modern medicine not only about cure, but more about care than was previously emphasized. Communication with dying patients and families, analgesics for chronic pain, and advance directives all are covered in over 90% of schools today. Knowledge of the history of the social work profession and of the historical forces that shape the development of social welfare is critical to developing competence in social work. Study of history helps students develop a critical perspective on current controversies within social welfare and the social work profession. The study of local history allows social work students to consider the economic, political, social, and cultural origins of the problems that have shaped and often constrained the lives of people they serve. Using examples from the history of Detroit, Michigan, this paper shows how local history can animate social welfare history, provide students with important context about the practice environment, including relationships between diverse populations, and give specific, meaningful examples of historical trends presented in social welfare history and policy textbooks. Psychomotor skill performance is central to effective clinical practice across health professions. These complex skills are challenging to teach, particularly in the novice learner. As many health professions programs have increased blended course offerings, educators must establish best practices for teaching psychomotor skills in this evolving learning environment. The purpose of this paper is to describe the innovative application of an evidence-based framework to teaching psychomotor skills to novice learners in a blended learning environment. Using a modified 9-step framework, two novice clinical skills courses in a Doctor of Physical Therapy Program were redesigned to teach psychomotor skills in a blended format, using online and in-person class sessions. Online coursework consisted of synchronous and asynchronous learning activities that preceded an immersive lab experience. Formative and summative assessments occurred during lab immersion. The learning framework provided a central evidence-based pillar for novel course design, guiding development of learning activities for teaching psychomotor skills to novice learners in a blended learning environment. Initial student outcomes appear favorable when compared with previous traditional course structures and satisfaction was high. These preliminary findings align with prior research using similar frameworks for learning complex skills and provide an archetype curricular model for a blended learning environment. Training teachers of learners with visual impairment (VI) emphasise instrumental skills such as curriculum adaptation and assistive technology, at times ignoring anxieties and attitudes within teachers surrounding disability. South Africa's education system faces a huge backlog in VI teacher training, which is being addressed by intensive short courses developed through the Teacher Empowerment for Disability Inclusion (TEDI) project. With only 5 days of contact, hard choices must be made regarding what teachers most need to prepare for the VI learner. The Authors felt that personal and attitudinal shifts (in teachers entirely new to VI) were pivotal. Besides 'harder' skills, trainees took part (as audience) in a daily panel discussion by four academically successful VI graduates, with experiences of both inclusive and special education. The panel strategy had five aims: i) counter stereotypes by showcasing high-achieving VI persons; ii) provide humanising, first-hand experience of VI; iii) raise and digest difficult emotions to do with VI; iv) model a sense of mutual acceptance between learners and teachers and v) add humour and lightness to difficult issues. Research suggests that high school students often have negative experiences with mathematics. To address this challenge, this paper shares findings of a design-based research project in which researchers and teachers developed and used a narrative approach to lesson planning in order to design lesson experiences that provide opportunities for high school students to become captivated with mathematical content ("CMLs"). The goal of this approach is to provide students positive aesthetic opportunities, such as inspiring student curiosity, while maintaining cognitive demand and coherence. Overall, students reported more positive, varied aesthetic experiences (e.g., suspense, surprise) in CMLs than in other lessons with the same teacher and students. These findings provide evidence that designing lessons as mathematical stories shows promise and can offer students more positive aesthetic experiences in mathematics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We sought to design a micro-curriculum to structure supervised clinical placements for junior medical students within a variety of community-based settings of differing clinical disciplines. Given the gaps in the literature, this paper reflects on the opportunities and challenges of our design, implementation, and evaluation strategies in constructing an integrated task-based micro-curriculum for interprofessional community-based learning in year 2 of a four-year graduate entry program. The design was informed by a systems thinking framework and guided by contemporary curricular theories on self-directed and interprofessional learning. Extensive consultations with stakeholders were undertaken. Alignment with relevant national level documents and curricular frameworks was ensured. The systems thinking approach provided first, an experience of applying thinking tools for a deeper understanding of how various parts of this micro-curriculum and subsystems should be integrated. Second, applying the toolkit uncovered tension points on which leverage could optimise future enhancements. Eighteen types of health professions were recruited including 105 general practitioners and 253 healthcare practitioners from a range of disciplines. Systems thinking allows for the identification of various interacting elements within the curriculum to be considered as part of an integrated whole. Down syndrome is the most common form of intellectual disability. However, there is a paucity of educational research focused on this vulnerable segment of learners especially in the present novel situation. This paper aimed to explore how teachers tailor remote special education for children with down syndrome amid the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines. It draws from a phenomenological qualitative study that collected information from online interviews with nine special education teachers handling children with down syndrome. The results revealed five themes: (1) contextualize individual educational plans; (2) meet sensory and movement needs; (3) emotionally connect with children; (4) communicate often with families; and (5) collaborate with community. This study provides practical insight into the enabling practices that teachers use to design the remote special education for children with down syndrome amid the current crisis. Racism has been recognised as a threat to patient outcomes, public health, and the healthcare workforce, and health professions (HP) educators and learners alike are seeking effective ways to teach anti-racism in HP education. However, facilitating conversations on race and racism in healthcare contexts can be challenging. Integrative arts and humanities approaches can engage learners in the critical dialogue necessary to educational interventions focused on anti-racism. Discussions of works of visual art, for instance, can leverage visual art as an avenue for indirection to balance introspection and revelation with psychological safety. Structured pedagogical frameworks that emphasise the perspectives and experiences of participants, such as the Visual Thinking Strategies approach, can lead to open-ended and collaborative discussions where participants can safely explore their assumptions in a space that encourages productive discomfort. Visual arts-based programs on anti-racism in HP are limited, though, in part because no collection of images exists to support HP educators in this endeavour. This paper describes the process of developing a digital image library to support HP educators seeking to generate discussions on race and racism as part of anti-racism curricula. The older adult population in the US is burgeoning and nurses will be at the forefront of providing the skilled, compassionate care needed for them. Undergraduate nursing students do not commonly desire to work with older adults after graduation, likely related to negative attitudes, which can adversely impact the care provided. To determine the effect of a course using a suite of teaching techniques designed to positively shift nursing students' attitudes toward older adults. A one group pre and post-test design was used to test the effect of completion of the Nursing Care of the Older Adult course on baccalaureate undergraduate junior level nursing students' attitudes toward older people at a large University in the Midwest for two consecutive years (2019 and 2020). A quality assurance evaluation using a voluntary anonymous survey (Kogan's Attitude Toward Older People Instrument) on paper (2019) or online (2020) took place on the first and last day of class. Normality was assessed and the central limit theorem was applicable, therefore, independent samples t-tests were performed on the primary outcome, total score, with the primary predictor as pre vs post. This process was repeated on a 2020 cohort in the same course with a paired samples t-test, as paired subject ID's were recorded in 2020 but not in 2019. Due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on all parts of academic life, no direct comparisons were made between the 2019 and 2020 samples. Course content included lectures, videos, MaskEd™ simulation, group work, case studies and clinical experiences. Both cohorts had significant improvement in the total Kogan instrument score, indicating a positive change in attitudes toward older adults [2019 pre M 167.2, SD 20.3 to post M 176.9, SD 22.4, t (292.43) = 3.96, p < 0.001 and 2020 pre M 179.4, SD 21.3 to post M 188.1, SD 22.2, t (70) = −5.61, p < 0.001]. Authors share an initial exploration of the pedagogy practiced at The Camphill School, specifically in relation to the integration of technology into its program. An approved private school situated in rural Pennsylvania, which caters to students on the autism spectrum, and others with different or additional physical and developmental disabilities, Camphill School works out of an adapted Waldorf curriculum, and integrates Waldorf Education, traditional special education strategies, and strategies informed by the curative educational approach to working with children and adolescents with intellectual disabilities and developmental delays. As a "tech-light" school, for pedagogical and therapeutic reasons, Camphill School has a pressing need to examine the current numbers of screen-based devices in the residential houses, classrooms, and therapy sessions, and the sharp increase in their presence in the last decade. This paper highlights several areas of concern related to the children's physical, and emotional wellbeing, and the wellbeing of the community in which the school is located. While research indicates a benefit to speech development for children using these devices, there are several gaps, which need to be examined, particularly for the population of children that is served. The necessity to preserve the organization's pedagogical integrity and identity as a school that provides a nurturing, natural environment for the children, while keeping abreast of trends in their professional field, leads to a series of recommendations in orienting toward the future. In the light of global calls to decolonise the curriculum and the national impact of the Black Lives Matter movement, there is pressure on social work academics to review, deconstruct and decolonise social work curricula. Social work education places strong emphasis on anti-oppressive, relationship-based practice that acknowledges diversity, social and economic injustice. This creates additional complexities and pressures for educators attempting to deconstruct social work curricula. This paper considers the emotional labour that such a task entails, and the usefulness of applying psychoanalytic concepts to understanding this emotional labour. It does this by exploring a critical incident and examining the complexities that educators face in constructing decolonised curricula within a marketised academy. The goal of parkour is to cross various obstacles in an efficient and creative way by jumping, swinging, climbing, and running. Parkour aligns with the SHAPE America national standards for K-12 physical education and has demonstrated its potential to highly engage both boys and girls in moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). In this article, we present a knowledge packet for teaching parkour to elementary children. First, we discuss the knowledge packet by unpacking the content development together with common errors and suggestions on how to correct these. Next, we propose appropriate equipment that can be used during physical education lessons. After which we introduce organizational and pedagogical principles that strengthen the parkour unit, such as focused station work, modifying content and equipment and offering children high practice opportunities and the role of teacher's content knowledge. Medical education has an important role in developing attitudes, behaviors and cultures that support safe care. Increasingly, however, research has argued for a more interprofessional approach to be taken. This scoping review examines the design and impact of interprofessional education interventions involving medical students that focus on patient safety. We systematically searched PubMed, EMBASE, PsycINFO and CINAHL between January 2000 and November 2019. Studies were eligible if they included medical students and at least one other profession, interactive learning, a strong emphasis on patient safety in the learning objectives, and an empirical method of evaluation. Forty-three studies met these criteria and the diverse range of approaches to intervention design and method of evaluation are detailed in this review. We found that interprofessional patient safety education interventions are generally well received by students with knowledge and skill gain documented; several also reported changes in student behaviour. However, the lack of empirically driven study designs, combined with the lack of rigour when reporting, makes it difficult to draw clear comparisons. This paper reports on findings from an integrative literature review of evaluation studies undertaken into sexual health promotion preparation programmes aimed at professionals with a sexual health promotion remit. Using a pre-defined search strategy, inclusion criteria and PRISMA guidelines, databases were systematically searched. Studies were screened and those included were quality assessed. Twenty-seven relevant studies were identified. Thematic analysis showed programmes were diverse in terms of how they had been developed, the content included, approaches to evaluation and outcomes identified. Evaluations showed participation in a training programme encouraged participants to feel more comfortable and confident to discuss sexual health within their role and more likely to introduce sexual health into client discussions. The types of programmes and evaluation approaches were diverse making direct comparison between them challenging. There should be agreed core outcome impact measures for sexual health education programmes in the areas of knowledge, comfort, skills and changes to practice, to allow for more direct comparison in future evaluation studies. Informationists and nurse educators launched a pilot program that integrates a Sectra Virtual Dissection Table into a Critical Care Nurse Residency Program (CCNRP) curriculum. CCNRP is a mandatory education program for novice, critical care registered nurses at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center (UCMC). After nurses complete the seven-week course, they take a post-course survey. This survey measures satisfaction with the virtual dissection table and resident perception of anatomical knowledge gained. In total, 106 nurses have utilized and evaluated the Sectra Table. Issue How educators should respond to student reports of intense emotional reactions to curricular content—i.e., being triggered—invites intense debate. There are claims of insensitivity on one side and calls to "toughen up" on the other. These polemics aside, such instances sometimes represent a true dilemma, particularly within medical education where engaging highly sensitive content is essential to future patient care and where managing one's own emotions is a core competency. Parsing this convoluted and emotional debate into these domains illustrates how medical educators can simultaneously legitimize the lived experiences of students, engage in honest dialogue, and maintain a shared commitment to education. Evidence: While substantial energy has been spent debating the legitimacy of students' emotional reactions, the discourse lacks a clear conceptual framework and we often end up talking past each other. The concept of brave spaces offers an important alternative where sensitive subject matter can be engaged with civility. Implications: This paper offers a model for building brave spaces within medical education by clarifying the rights and responsibilities of both teachers and learners in each of three intersecting domains: intrapersonal, interpersonal, and civic. This model is exemplified in a case where students reported being triggered by course content. By parsing this case across the three domains, we can clarify how responses are multifaceted and we can simultaneously avoid indictment of another's lived experiences while preserving the pedagogical integrity of the curriculum. The article discusses the Digital Health, a graduate-level course offered at Tufts University School of Medicine in the Department of Public Health and Community Medicine for ten semesters, starting in Fall 2019. Topics include the pedagogic goals and the delivery format that guided the course, digital health technologies and topics covered by the course, and the lessons learned from teaching the course for ten semesters.

Teaching dance technique in academic environments can be problematic in that many Western practices are rooted in traditions that contradict contemporary educational theory. This can create a disconnect between maintaining time-honored traditions and developing more student-centered class structures. This article questions the importance of complying with tradition in teaching technique. Experimentation in class structure illustrates how focusing on the development of skills in visual, oral, and movement literacy improved learning outcomes for students in an upper-level contemporary technique class while simultaneously yielding better technical and artistic development. This article is an afterword to the special issue on social-semiotic and systemic functional approaches to content and language-integrated learning in bilingual/multilingual education. It provides a conceptual overview of the contributions of each of the six articles. It highlights the theoretical pluralism which allows SFL to be combined with a range of other perspectives from applied linguistics and education, to throw light on content and language integration across a wide range of bilingual/multilingual education settings. In particular, the afterword focuses on how SFL and other compatible perspectives allow for a deeper understanding of content and language integration in three educational domains: curriculum, pedagogy and assessment. The afterword also highlights the potential of the use of SFL as a key part of the knowledge base for teachers in bilingual/multilingual education programmes, and suggests ways in which the findings from the studies can be incorporated in teacher education and professional development at each of the levels of curriculum, pedagogy and assessment. Religion and spirituality (RS) are vital aspects of client identity and well-being, yet social work professionals are often ill-equipped to address these in practice due to a lack of specialized training. The National Association of Social Work (NASW) and Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) support integrating RS content into social work curriculum, but existing research focuses on Master of Social Work (MSW)-level elective courses. This qualitative study addresses Bachelor of Social Work (BSW)-level integration by (a) exploring how many accredited BSW programs offer an elective course on RS and (b) analyzing syllabi from these courses to determine specific strategies for teaching RS topics. Introduction: Finite resources limit the amount of time EMS agencies can dedicate to continuing education in pediatric emergencies. EMS instructors need effective, efficient, and affordable educational strategies for these high-risk, low frequency events. Objective: To compare the effectiveness of four training methods in management of pediatric emergencies for paramedics. Methods: A validated, performance-based, simulated clinical assessment module was used to provide a baseline measurement of paramedics' resuscitation skills during three simulated pediatric emergencies. Educational modules were developed that targeted deficiencies identified by the baseline assessment, including advanced pediatric life support skills, airway management, use of the Broselow-Luten Tape®, pediatric drug dose calculations and drug delivery, seizure management, and trauma assessment. Paramedics from five EMS agencies in Michigan were randomized to four education intervention groups. The control group used an existing, online, continuing education course. Three experimental groups were exposed to the same content during five, one-hour sessions conducted over 2.5 years. Instruction was delivered using high-fidelity, simulated case-based training, low-fidelity simulation training, or lecture with procedural skills lab, based on group assignment. After the training, all groups were tested within 4–6 months using methods identical to baseline testing. Results: One hundred forty-seven subjects completed the study. There were no differences in baseline skill levels among the four groups. Only the low fidelity simulation training group demonstrated improvement of combined scenario scores (p = 0.0008). Scores for targeted skills improved in one scenario in the high-fidelity group, two in the low-fidelity group, one in the lecture/lab group, and none in the control group. Conclusions: Although improvements in those skills included in the training were found in three groups, two hours of training in pediatric emergencies per year was insufficient to produce a substantial improvement overall. Expensive, high-fidelity simulators were not necessary for teaching pediatric resuscitation skills to paramedics; instructive scenarios using low-fidelity manikins and debriefings appear to be adequate. The 2019 Australian Psychology Accreditation Council's Accreditation Standards for Psychology Programs require clinical psychology education providers to focus on building and assessing competencies. There is limited evidence regarding the most effective methods of teaching competent practice. Threshold concepts are those which change the way a learner views a topic once understood. Threshold concepts comprise a novel approach to teaching and learning in higher education which have not yet been applied to clinical psychology education. The identification and application of threshold concepts in other practice-based health care education was reviewed to assess their utility in clinical psychology education. A search of published articles related to threshold concept theory and practice-based health care disciplines was conducted and those papers which used empirical methods to identify threshold concepts were reviewed. Nine articles where threshold concepts were identified in five practice-based health care disciplines including occupational therapy, medicine, physiotherapy, paediatric surgery and prosthetics, were found. A number of threshold concepts found in other disciplines had relevance to competencies required by the standards for clinical psychology practice, predominantly with reference to competent application of psychological interventions. The literature suggests that threshold concepts are a promising area of educational innovation with strong potential to improve clinical psychology education. Identifying these concepts could assist clinical psychology educators to develop curriculum to meet the Australian standards and facilitate learners' movement through the essential learning thresholds. This article explores the foundation of a joint research project between social work (SW) colleagues at Hope Africa University in Burundi, and Oxford Brookes University in the United Kingdom (UK). It considers the destructive impact of colonialism on indigenous SW practices in Burundi setting out an argument for decolonisation of the SW curriculum both in Burundi and the UK. Drawing on the work of Mbembe and the traditional concepts of Ikibiri and Ubuntu, the article sets out a framework for cross-cultural collaboration not dominated by western colonial ideas and works towards the Global Agenda for SW. The first family medicine training programme for medical students in India began at Christian Medical College (CMC), Vellore in 2005 as a two-week programme. Currently, it includes two mandatory and one elective programme along with one to two weeks during the internship. In this study, the authors examined the impact of the mandatory programmes in family medicine through the feedback of medical students and the faculty experience. The aim of the authors was to examine the impact on medical students based on their feedback and the experience of faculty in teaching family medicine. This paper reports a retrospective evaluation based on the feedback of third-year medical students after their mandatory programmes in 2018. The authors collected students' feedback using questionnaires and recorded the faculty experience through a focus-group discussion (FGD) and in-depth interview. Overall attendance of students was 50–60%. About 75% of students who filled in the questionnaire felt the programme to be relevant to their future role as 'Physicians of First Contact'. Faculty felt challenged to balance their role as academics in addition to their clinical responsibilities. However, introducing family medicine principles in the medical curriculum was sensed by the faculty to equip students to manage common clinical conditions effectively. In conclusion students' understanding of the unique status of family medicine to accommodate patients of all ages and problems within a single umbrella health-care system was well discerned by the authors in this study. Problem-based learning is an evidence-based, pedagogical approach that invites students to solve complex, real-life problems using knowledge learned in the classroom. Effective use of problem-based learning in undergraduate gerontology courses, specifically, is likely to deepen students' knowledge about course content related to aging and may also promote students' long-term interest in gerontology. House Hunters: Gerontology Style is a problem-based learning activity that can be used in small-group discussions to facilitate students' understanding of issues related to relocation and homebuying in older adulthood. In this activity – based on the popular television show – students act as real estate agents for a fictional older couple relocating closer to adult children. Assignment features can be tailored easily by the instructor to optimize specific learning objectives. In an evaluation of the activity, students who completed this activity reported that it was engaging, that it enabled them to apply material from the class, and that it facilitated their application of course material to a "real world" problem. Suggestions for modifications to future iterations of this assignment may include a more pointed focus on budgetary constraints on homebuying in older adulthood, approaching homebuying from a life course lens, and considering the role of disparities in the home buying process. Faculty from diverse disciplines are involved in teaching servicelearning where reflection is an essential component. This qualitative study explores disciplinary differences in understanding reflection and use of reflective pedagogy. We interviewed faculty (N = 24) from 18 departments to examine differences in how they conceive and practice reflective pedagogy in service-learning courses. We found that disciplinary differences are a factor in how faculty conceive and practice reflection. Faculty from health and social care disciplines demonstrated an advantage compared to colleagues from other fields. Further, we found that how faculty conceive reflection is a factor in reflective practice. Conceptualizations of reflection, which are more student-referent or learner-focused, correlate with the more intense and effective practice of reflective pedagogy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The Michigan State College of Human Medicine began as an experiment to teach medical students in community-based settings and to create a primary care workforce for the state. Decades later, CHM faced internal and external challenges that spurred creation of a new curriculum - the Share Discovery Curriculum - founded on learning by doing and other learning theories. Methods: A curricular design group (CDG) developed guiding principles for reform. Based on this, pedagogies and structures were selected to achieve this vision and developed into a curricular structure. Components of the first-year curriculum were piloted with a group of students and faculty members. Results: Six guiding principles were endorsed, grounded in learning theories such as Dewey's Learning by Doing. Based upon these, several key features of the new curriculum emerged: learning communities; one-on-one coaches for students; symptom-based presentations for content; simulation, authentic clinical tasks, flipped classrooms, and modified practice-based learning as primary teaching modalities; early, integrated clinical and scientific learning; milestones as course learning objectives; and a multidimensional, competency-based assessment system. Discussion: The process and outcomes described here are intended as an exemplar for schools undertaking curricular change. After a COVID-19-induced lockdown in the spring of 2020 in Denmark, the reopening of schools involved bringing the teaching outdoors. This offered a unique opportunity to study the experiences of teachers not used to working outdoors. In light of Thomas Guskey's teacher development theory, these experiences are investigated in a qualitative in-depth study of 12 teachers. Despite starting with different attitudes towards teaching outdoors, the teachers agreed that the prevailing content outdoors had to be curricular, that the preparation had been cumbersome, and that they could teach more from their own mindset outdoors. Furthermore, all participating teachers expressed that they wanted to continue teaching outdoors more post-COVID than before. However, it is difficult to discern the significance of the outdoor teaching specifically, as there were numerous aspects of the schoolday that were changed in the reopening. This study examined student experiences participating in a peer-led three-day wilderness canoe excursion in Northern Ontario, Canada. This program is a mandatory outdoor experience program (MOEP) for third-year students and is the final course in a progressive series of outdoor experiences offered at the beginning of the first, second, and third year. Guided by principles of realist evaluation, the written reflections from consenting students in the 2015 MOEP cohort were analyzed to identify the contexts and mechanisms associated with enjoyment or lack of enjoyment of their trip. These findings will help improve the MOEP program and have implications for similar intentionally led outdoor programs offered at other higher education institutions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although there is a notion of a 'Nordic tradition' of outdoor education in the international literature, research from the Nordic countries is rarely included in research reviews. Therefore, this scoping review provides an overview of empirical studies on outdoor education (grades 1–13) from the Nordic countries. Of the 586 hits, 52 studies met the inclusion criteria and were subjected to descriptive and content analyses. The majority of the studies are qualitative and situated in primary school contexts. Multiple school subjects and science are the most common subject matter addressed by outdoor education, but friluftsliv, mathematics, and language are also represented. The content analysis indicates that teachers' perspectives are most frequently investigated, followed by nature of outdoor education, well-being, and cognitive learning. Fewer studies investigate teaching and learning processes, digital resources, and education for sustainability outdoors. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological research study is to examine ethical issues that transpire for practicing ecotherapists. Ten participants share common ethical issues that emerge in their practices and ways they manage them. The research questions for this study are: 1. What are the ethical concerns that emerge most in ecotherapy practice? 2. What attitudes and beliefs do ecotherapists have about ethics in their practices? 3. How do ecotherapists manage ethical issues that emerge in practice? 4. What implications does this information have for the practice of ecotherapy? Moustakas' eight step process for qualitative research is employed, and semi-structured interviews are collected and analyzed. The following superordinate themes emerge: 1. Confidentiality and Informed Consent, 2. Training Recommendations, 3. Assessment and Client Safety, 4. Dual Relationships, 5. Values Conflicts, and 6. Self-Awareness.
