Social isolation and loneliness greatly contribute to negative health consequences in older adults. Technological solutions can be an asset in promoting social connections and healthy behaviours. This paper presents an innovative structure for an Internet of Things (IoT) platform specifically tailored for older persons. The framework utilises a supervised learning algorithm to classify users into four identified profiles to facilitate the adoption and engagement of technology. The platform incorporates wearables, such as socks and smart bands, to track physical activity, and a messaging module to encourage social interaction. The platform processes the acquired data to quantify steps and deliver tailored interventions remotely to the older adults through the AGAPE Assistant, the mHealth solution of the platform. Furthermore, the AGAPE Assistant has a user interface design for older adults, with a focus on their specific needs. Additionally, improving digital literacy among older adults is crucial for maximizing the long-term compliance and benefits of such technological solutions. On the other hand, AGAPE Monitor is a web application used by formal caregivers to configure the tailored interventions. The platform's usability was assessed using different usability scale questionnaires, which revealed a mild level of user satisfaction and acceptance. The proposed framework is currently being deployed on more than 112 older adults across three countries: Italy, Romania, and Portugal. Around the world, the occurrence of landslides has become one of the greatest threats to human life, property, infrastructure, and natural environments. Despite extensive research and discussions on the spatiotemporal dependence of landslide displacements, there is still a lack of understanding concerning the factors that appear to control displacement distribution in landslides because of their significant variations. This paper implements a Graph Convolutional Network (GCN) to predict displacement following the Moio della Civitella landslide in southern Italy and identify factors that may affect the distribution of movement following the landslide. An interferometric technique, known as permanent scatter interferometry (PSI), has been developed based on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite imagery to derive permanent scatter points that can be used to represent the deformation of landslides. This study utilized the GCN regression model applied to PSs points and data reflecting geological and geomorphological factors to extract the interdependency between paired data points, resulting in an adjacency matrix of the interval [0, 0,8). The proposed model outperforms conventional machine learning and deep learning algorithms such as linear regression (LR), K-nearest neighbors (KNN), Support vector regression (SVR), Decision tree, lasso, and artificial neural network (ANN). All societies should carefully address the child abuse and neglect phenomenon due to its acute and chronic sequelae. Even if artificial intelligence (AI) implementation in this field could be helpful, the state of the art of this implementation is not known. No studies have comprehensively reviewed the types of AI models that have been developed/validated. Furthermore, no indications about the risk of bias in these studies are available. For these reasons, the authors conducted a systematic review of the PubMed database to answer the following questions: "what is the state of the art about the development and/or validation of AI predictive models useful to contrast child abuse and neglect phenomenon?"; "which is the risk of bias of the included articles?". The inclusion criteria were: articles written in English and dated from January 1985 to 31 March 2023; publications that used a medical and/or protective service dataset to develop and/or validate AI prediction models. The reviewers screened 413 articles. Among them, seven papers were included. Their analysis showed that: the types of input data were heterogeneous; artificial neural networks, convolutional neural networks, and natural language processing were used; the datasets had a median size of 2600 cases; the risk of bias was high for all studies. The results of the review pointed out that the implementation of AI in the child abuse and neglect field lagged compared to other medical fields. Furthermore, the evaluation of the risk of bias suggested that future studies should provide an appropriate choice of sample size, validation, and management of overfitting, optimism, and missing data. Increasing interest in natural gas-fired gensets is motivated by District Heating (DH) network applications, especially in urban areas. Even if they represent customary solutions, when used in DH, duty regimes are driven by network thermal energy demands resulting in discontinuous operation, which affects their remaining useful life. As such, the attention on effective condition-based maintenance has gained momentum. In this paper, a novel unsupervised anomaly detection framework is proposed for gensets in DH networks based on Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition (SCADA) data. The framework relies on multivariate Machine-Learning (ML) regression models trained with a Leave-One-Out Cross-Validation method. Model residuals generated during the testing phase are then post-processed with a sliding threshold approach based on a rolling average. This methodology is tested against nine major failures that occurred on the gas genset installed in the Aosta DH plant in Italy. This paper explores the relationship between received inheritances and the distribution of wealth (financial, non-financial and total) in four developed countries: the United States, Canada, Italy and Spain. We follow the inequality of opportunity (IOp) literature and − considering inheritances as the only circumstance− we show that traditional IOp approaches can lead to non-robust and arbitrary measures of IOp depending on discretionary cut-off choices of a continuous circumstance such as inheritances. To overcome this limitation, we apply Machine Learning methods ('random forest' algorithm) to optimize the choice of cut-offs and we find that IOp explains over 60% of wealth inequality in the US and Spain (using the Gini coefficient), and more than 40% in Italy and Canada. Including parental education as an additional circumstance −available for the US and Italy− we find that inheritances are still the main contributor. Finally, using the S-Gini index with different parameters to weight different parts of the distribution, we find that the effect of inheritances is more prominent at the middle of the wealth distribution, while parental education is more important for the asset-poor. Assessing the intensity characteristics of specific soccer drills (matches, small-side game, and match-based exercises) could help practitioners to plan training sessions by providing the optimal stimulus for every player. In this paper, we propose a data analytics framework to assess the neuromuscular or metabolic characteristics of a soccer-specific exercise in relation with the expected match intensity. GPS data describing the physical tasks' external intensity during an entire season of twenty-eight semi-professional soccer players competing at the fourth Italian division were used in this study. A supervised machine-learning approach was tested in order to detect difference in playing positions in different sport-specific drills. Moreover, a non-supervised machine-learning model was used to profile the match neuromuscular and metabolic characteristics. Players' playing positions during matches and match-based exercises are characterised by specific metabolic and neuromuscular characteristics related to tactical demands, while in the small-side game these differences are not detected. Additionally, our framework permits to evaluate if the match performance request is mirrored during training drills. Practitioners could evaluate the type of stimulus performed by a player in a specific training drill in order to assess if they reflect the matches characteristics of their specific playing position. Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to describe a model for the design and development of a condition-based maintenance (CBM) strategy for the cutting group of a labeling machine. The CBM aims to ensure the quality of labels' cut and overall machine performances. Design/methodology/approach: In developing a complete CBM strategy, two main difficulties have to be overcome: (1) appropriately dealing with incomplete and low-quality production database and (2) selecting the most promising predictive model. The first issue has been addressed applying data cleansing operations and creating ad hoc methodology to enlarge the training data. The second issue has been handled developing and comparing an empirical model with a machine learning (ML)-based model; the comparison has been performed assessing capabilities thereof in predicting erroneous label cuts on data obtained from an operating plant located in Italy. Findings: Research results showed that both empirical and ML-based approaches exhibit good performances in detecting the operating conditions of the cutting machine. The advantage of adopting an ML-based model is that it can be used not only as a condition indicator (i.e. a model able to continuously provide the health status of an asset) but also in predictive maintenance policies (i.e. a CBM carried out following a forecast of the degradation of the item). Research limitations/implications: The study described in this manuscript has been developed on the practices of a labeling machine developed by an international company manufacturing bottling lines for beverage industry. The proposed approach might need some customization in case it is applied to other industries. Future researches can validate the applicability of such models on different rotary machines in other companies and similar industries. Originality/value: The main contribution of this paper lies in the empirical demonstration of the benefits of CBM and predictive maintenance in manufacturing, through the overcoming of a specific production issue. The large number of variables involved in thin label cutting lines (film thickness between 30 and 38 µm), the high throughput and the high costs due to production interruptions render the prediction of non-conforming labels an economically relevant, albeit challenging, goal. Moreover, despite the large scientific literature on CBM in rolling bearing and face cutting movements, papers dealing with rotary labeling machines are very unusual and unique. West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne virus potentially causing serious illness in humans and other animals. Since 2004, several studies have highlighted the progressive spread of WNV Lineage 2 (L2) in Europe, with Italy being one of the countries with the highest number of cases of West Nile disease reported. In this paper, we give an overview of the epidemiological and genetic features characterising the spread and evolution of WNV L2 in Italy, leveraging data obtained from national surveillance activities between 2011 and 2021, including 46 newly assembled genomes that were analysed under both phylogeographic and phylodynamic frameworks. In addition, to better understand the seasonal patterns of the virus, we used a machine learning model predicting areas at high-risk of WNV spread. Our results show a progressive increase in WNV L2 in Italy, clarifying the dynamics of interregional circulation, with no significant introductions from other countries in recent years. Moreover, the predicting model identified the presence of suitable conditions for the 2022 earlier and wider spread of WNV in Italy, underlining the importance of using quantitative models for early warning detection of WNV outbreaks. Taken together, these findings can be used as a reference to develop new strategies to mitigate the impact of the pathogen on human and other animal health in endemic areas and new regions. Sociological literature on cultural practices seeking to understand the social differentiation of taste pays limited attention to what people avoid consuming, despite its potential as a strategic indicator of taste. Avoidance has special relevance for the understanding of eating and drinking practices which are often characterized by exclusion of items for health, hedonic, reputational, or spiritual reasons. Making use of rich data on twenty-three items commonly consumed by Italian adults, this paper investigates how avoidances—i.e. what people claim never to eat or drink—are clustered, socially patterned and have evolved over time. Methodologically, we propose the novel use and integration of two machine learning techniques—Self-Organizing Maps (SOM) and Boosted Regression Trees (BRT)— to identify nine highly homogeneous avoidance clusters and examine the power of social variables in predicting the probability of individuals' belonging to various clusters and to further characterize them. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has profoundly transformed the global scenario, marked by overwhelming infections, fatalities, overburdened healthcare infrastructures, economic upheavals, and significant lifestyle modifications. Concurrently, the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, triggered a severe humanitarian and public health crisis, leading to healthcare disruptions, medical resource shortages, and heightened emergency care needs. Italy emerged as a significant refuge for displaced Ukrainians during this period. Aim: This research aims to discern the impact of the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine on the COVID-19 transmission dynamics in Italy. Materials and Methods: The study employed advanced simulation methodologies, particularly those integrating machine learning, to model the pandemic's trajectory. The XGBoost algorithm was adopted to construct a predictive model for the COVID-19 epidemic trajectory in Italy. Results: The model demonstrated a commendable accuracy of 86.03% in forecasting new COVID-19 cases in Italy over 30 days and an impressive 96.29% accuracy in estimating fatalities. When applied to the initial 30 days following the escalation of the conflict (24 February 2022, to 25 March 2022), the model's projections suggested that the influx of Ukrainian refugees into Italy did not significantly alter the country's COVID-19 epidemic course. Discussion: While simulation methodologies have been pivotal in the pandemic response, their accuracy is intrinsically linked to data quality, assumptions, and modeling techniques. Enhancing these methodologies can further their applicability in future public health emergencies. The findings from the model underscore that external geopolitical events, such as the mass migration from Ukraine, did not play a determinative role in Italy's COVID-19 epidemic dynamics during the study period. Conclusion: The research provides empirical evidence negating a substantial influence of the Ukrainian refugee influx due to the Russian full-scale invasion on the COVID-19 epidemic trajectory in Italy. Thanks to the development of increasingly sophisticated machine-learning techniques, it is possible to improve predictions of a particular phenomenon. In this paper, after analyzing data relating to the mobility habits of University of Foggia (UniFG) community members, we apply logistic regression and cross validation to determine the information that is missing in the dataset (so-called imputation process). Our goal is to make it possible to obtain the missing information that can be useful for calculating sustainability indicators and that allow the UniFG Rectorate to improve its sustainable mobility policies by encouraging methods that are as appropriate as possible to the users' needs. This study summarises the research activity carried out in the Acuto Field Laboratory (FR, Italy), where experiments testing the stability of a subvertical rock wall in limestone are ongoing within an abandoned quarry, now devoted to studies focused on the mitigation of geological risks. The research focuses on the natural factors that can prepare a subvertical rock mass to evolve through subsequent rock fall if predisposing conditions are verified. A network of multiparameter monitoring sensors is installed on three different sectors of the rock wall to record both the natural and anthropogenic stressors and the effects of deformation induced by them. In terms of stressors, the multiparametric monitoring system is able to detect the environmental parameters, such as temperature, rainfall, wind, strain, and vibrations. In terms of induced effects on the rock mass, the multiparametric monitoring system is suitable to detect deformation, displacement, and microseismicity. In this paper, the different monitored parameters are presented along with detailed analyses to highlight cause to effect relationships, such as freezing and thawing, to retrieve correlations among different factors. The obtained results represent the first analysis of the data recorded in the three instrumented sectors of the field laboratory and allowed evaluating the role of preparatory factors in inducing rock falls, opening further perspective on numerical modelling or machine learning applications based on monitoring data. Particular Matter (PM) data are the most used for the assessment of air quality, but it is also useful to monitor VOC and CO. The health impact of PM increases with decreasing aerodynamic dimensions, therefore most of the monitoring is aimed at PM10 (fraction of PM with aerodynamic dimensions smaller than 10 µm) and PM2.5 (fraction with aerodynamic dimensions lower than 2.5 µm). Generally, anthropogenic emissions contribute mainly to PM2.5 levels, whereas natural sources can largely affect PM10 concentrations. PM2.5/PM10 ratio can be used as a proxy of the origin (anthropogenic vs natural) of the PM, providing a useful indication about the main sources of PM that characterizes a specific geographical or urban setting. This paper presents the results of the analysis of continuous measurements of PM10 and PM2.5 concentrations at eight stations of the regional air quality monitoring network in Abruzzo (Central Italy), in the period 2017–2018. The application of models based on machine learning technique shows that PM2.5/PM10 ratio can be used to classify PM emissions and to know the nature of the emission source (natural and anthropogenic), under determinate conditions, and properly taking into account the meteorological parameters. Estimates of the real death toll of the COVID-19 pandemic have proven to be problematic in many countries, Italy being no exception. Mortality estimates at the local level are even more uncertain as they require stringent conditions, such as granularity and accuracy of the data at hand, which are rarely met. The "official" approach adopted by public institutions to estimate the "excess mortality" during the pandemic draws on a comparison between observed all-cause mortality data for 2020 and averages of mortality figures in the past years for the same period. In this paper, we apply the recently developed machine learning control method to build a more realistic counterfactual scenario of mortality in the absence of COVID-19. We demonstrate that supervised machine learning techniques outperform the official method by substantially improving the prediction accuracy of the local mortality in "ordinary" years, especially in small- and medium-sized municipalities. We then apply the best-performing algorithms to derive estimates of local excess mortality for the period between February and September 2020. Such estimates allow us to provide insights about the demographic evolution of the first wave of the pandemic throughout the country. Although the literature on the relationship between economic growth and CO2 emissions is extensive, the use of machine learning (ML) tools remains seminal. In this paper, we assess this nexus for Italy using innovative algorithms, with yearly data for the 1960–2017 period. We develop three distinct models: the batch gradient descent (BGD), the stochastic gradient descent (SGD), and the multilayer perceptron (MLP). Despite the phase of low Italian economic growth, results reveal that CO2 emissions increased in the predicting model. Compared to the observed statistical data, the algorithm shows a correlation between low growth and higher CO2 increase, which contradicts the main strand of literature. One of the most significant indicators for assessing the quality of university careers is the dropout rate between the first and second year. Both literature on the subjects and the results that emerged from numerous specific investigations into the dropouts of the university system, showed the crucial importance of this junction between the first and the second year. Reasons for dropping out can be quite varied, ranging from incorrect and/or insufficient prospective student orientation, the willingness or need to find a job as quickly as possible, to a lack of awareness of not being able to cope with a particular course of study rather than another. In this paper we focus specifically on the problem of dropouts in Italy, addressing it from a dual point of view. At an aggregate level, the analysis deals with dropout rates in Italy between the first and second year, in order to identify the main trends and dynamics at the national level. Subsequently, we analyze individual-level data from the University of Bari Aldo Moro, aiming to identify the most important contributing factors. This individual-level approach has emerged over recent years, and is generally known as 'Educational Data Mining', focused on the development of ad hoc methods that can be used to discover regularities and new information within databases from contexts related to education. In the context of intensified Halyomorpha halys infestations in Italy, this paper provides a very first investigation of key factors that drive fruit growers' intention to participate in a mutual fund (MF) compensating production losses due to this invasive insect. Data were collected in Veneto Region in Italy, where many farmers suffered H. halys attacks, and interest in the development of innovative risk management tools is growing. The study investigates how behavioral (risk attitude, risk perception) and personality factors (self-efficacy, locus of control) explain farmers' intention to participate in the MF, additionally controlling for a large number of primary control data (e.g. farmers' perceptions and characteristics, farm characteristics). The study assumes approximate sparsity and applies the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO), a machine learning technique which represents an original approach for research on risk management. Our empirical analysis reveals that farmers' intention to participate in the MF is driven by an interplay between the perceived risk of production loss, the benefits from participation in the fund, and the farm age, rather than by socio-economic characteristics of the farm. Food insecurity and food surplus are two pressing issues that have been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. This paper presents a novel approach to addressing these problems using blockchain technology. More specifically, data from the Italian Regusto platform are analysed to identify factors that determine the volume and economic value of surplus food redistribution. From a methodological statistical perspective, the performance of Stepwise Multiple Linear Regression and Random Forest are compared in a blockchain data analysis. The effective machine-learning-based analysis reveals that the Regusto platform gives people greater access to the surplus food redistributed by non-profit organizations and suppliers through both donations and sales. The study also highlights the potential effects of redistributing surplus food on the beneficiaries' diets and health and we find that redistributing surplus food can reduce household food insecurity among low-income families and communities measured by food poverty and COVID-19 indexes at different spatial locations. The 3D modeling and representation of geological data have experienced significant growth within last years, due to the use of new technologies derived from advancements in land representation methods. These technologies enable interactive, intuitive and clear geological visualizations. This paper shows how, by using the open-source Python software (operable with a simple internet browser) for machine learning (linear and KNN interpolations), together with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), it is possible to achieve interactive 3D visualizations of geological features in sedimentary basins. This study is performed in the onshore-offshore Crotone area (southern Italy) where a large amount of stratigraphic datasets are available from core perforation and seismic profiles due to the presence of a natural gas extraction field. Thanks to a database of 63 drilling lithologic records and 43 check points obtained from 9 interpreted seismic sections, several 3D HTML models were constructed defining three stratigraphic units (Pre-Messinian, Messinian, and Post-Messinian). An overlap of the Post-Messinian top surface and an erosional truncation of the Messinian top surface toward the N were observed, together with a rising of the Pre-Messinian top surface in the northwestern area. This stratigraphic architecture may indicate differential subsidence and/or uplifting due to syn-sedimentary fault kinematics in the whole studied area. The 3D models with the stratigraphic unit boundary surfaces obtained with KNN interpolation (showing stepped and abrupt edges) allowed the interpretation in terms of structural architecture and syn-sedimentary fault kinematics. Three main sets of faults were deduced: N–S; NNW-SSE, and ENE-WSW. A minorly represented E-W set was added to the main sets. These faults generated a horsts-grabens structure, and in many cases a determinate set of faults caused a progressive lowering or rising of some areas with an "en echelon" arrangement. Smart monitoring systems in orchards can automate agriculture monitoring processes and provide useful information about the presence of insects, such as the Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB), that threaten the production quantity and quality of fruit such as pears. Unlike other approaches in the literature, we propose a low-cost image monitoring system which exhibits a very low power consumption without compromising much of the accuracy that existing expensive systems incorporating significant computing and processing capability can achieve in such applications. The proposed system relies on a microcontroller unit and a camera which can take pictures of a double-sided sticky insect trap which, with the help of novel machine learning algorithms, can report on the presence of BMSB via a long-range communication link. The Internet of Things data capture and analysis system has recently been deployed in a real orchard in Italy which is subject to BMSB infestation and the first images have been analysed. This paper presents how the system works, the image processing, detection and classification algorithms, as well as a demonstration of the memory and energy consumption associated with the processing algorithms. Coastal and underwater archaeological sites pose significant challenges in terms of investigation, conservation, valorisation, and management. These sites are often at risk due to climate change and various human-made impacts such as urban expansion, maritime pollution, and natural deterioration. However, advances in remote sensing (RS) and Earth observation (EO) technologies applied to cultural heritage (CH) sites have led to the development of various techniques for underwater cultural heritage (UCH) exploration. The aim of this work was the evaluation of an integrated methodological approach using ultra-high-resolution (UHR) bathymetric data to aid in the identification and interpretation of submerged archaeological contexts. The study focused on a selected area of the submerged Archaeological Park of Baia (Campi Flegrei, south Italy) as a test site. The study highlighted the potential of an approach based on UHR digital bathymetric model (DBM) derivatives and the use of machine learning and statistical techniques to automatically extract and discriminate features of archaeological interest from other components of the seabed substrate. Predicting electricity production from renewable energy sources, such as solar photovoltaic installations, is crucial for effective grid management and energy planning in the transition towards a sustainable future. This study proposes machine learning approaches for predicting electricity production from solar photovoltaic installations at a regional level in Italy, not using data on individual installations. Addressing the challenge of diverse data availability between pinpoint meteorological inputs and aggregated power data for entire regions, we propose leveraging meteorological data from the centroid of each Italian province within each region. Particular attention is given to the selection of the best input features, which leads to augmenting the input with 1-hour-lagged meteorological data and previous-hour power data. Several ML approaches were compared and examined, optimizing the hyperparameters through five-fold cross-validation. The hourly predictions encompass a time horizon ranging from 1 to 24 h. Among tested methods, Kernel Ridge Regression and Random Forest Regression emerge as the most effective models for our specific application. We also performed experiments to assess how frequently the models should be retrained and how frequently the hyperparameters should be optimized in order to comprise between accuracy and computational costs. This work aims to show the potential of imaging spectroscopy in assessing water quality and aquatic vegetation in Lake Trasimeno, Italy. Hyperspectral reflectance data from the PRISMA, DESIS and EnMAP missions (2019–2022, summer periods) were compared with in situ measurements from WISPStation and used as inputs for water quality product generation algorithms. The bio-optical model BOMBER was run to simultaneously retrieve water quality parameters (Chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and Total Suspended Matter, (TSM)) and the coverage of submerged and emergent macrophytes (SM, EM); value-added products, such as Phycocyanin concentration maps, were generated through a machine learning approach. The results showed radiometric agreement between satellite and in situ data, with R2 > 0.9, a Spectral Angle < 10° and water quality mapping errors < 30%. Both SM and EM coverage varied significantly from 2019 (135 ha, 0 ha, respectively) to 2022 (2672 ha, 343 ha), likely influenced by changes in rainfall and lake levels. The areas of greatest variability in Chl-a and TSM were identified in the littoral zones in the western side of the lake, while the highest variation in the fractional cover of SM and density of EM were observed in the south-eastern region; this information could support the water authorities' monitoring activities. Respiratory malignancies, encompassing cancers affecting the lungs, the trachea, and the bronchi, pose a significant and dynamic public health challenge. Given that air pollution stands as a significant contributor to the onset of these ailments, discerning the most detrimental agents becomes imperative for crafting policies aimed at mitigating exposure. This study advocates for the utilization of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) methodologies, leveraging remote sensing data, to ascertain the primary influencers on the prediction of standard mortality rates (SMRs) attributable to respiratory cancer across Italian provinces, utilizing both environmental and socioeconomic data. By scrutinizing thirteen distinct machine learning algorithms, we endeavor to pinpoint the most accurate model for categorizing Italian provinces as either above or below the national average SMR value for respiratory cancer. Monitoring soil organic carbon (SOC) typically assumes conducting a labor-intensive soil sampling campaign, followed by laboratory testing, which is both expensive and impractical for generating useful, spatially continuous data products. The present study leverages the power of machine learning (ML) and, in particular, deep neural networks (DNNs) for segmentation, as well as satellite imagery, to estimate the SOC remotely. We propose a new two-stage pipeline for remote SOC estimation, which relies on using a DNN trained to classify land cover to perform feature extraction, while the SOC estimation is performed by a different ML model. The first stage is an image segmentation DNN with the U-Net architecture, which is trained to estimate the land cover for an observed geographical region, based on multi-spectral images taken by the Sentinel-2 satellite constellation. This estimator is subsequently used to extract the latent feature vector for each of the output pixels, by rolling back from the output (dense) layer of the U-Net and accessing the last available convolutional layer of the same dimension as our desired output. The second stage is trained on a set of feature vectors extracted at the coordinates for which manual SOC measurements exist. We tested a variety of ML models and report on their performance. Using the best extremely randomized trees model, we generated a spatially continuous map of SOC estimations for the region of Tuscany, in Italy, with a resolution of 10 m, to share with the researchers as a means of validating the results and to demonstrate the efficiency of the proposed approach, which can can easily be scaled to create a global continuous SOC map. The field of additive manufacturing, particularly 3D printing, has ushered in a significant transformation in the realm of joint arthritis treatment through prosthetic surgery. This innovative technology allows for the creation of bespoke prosthetic devices that are tailored to meet the specific needs of individual patients. These devices are constructed using high-performance materials, including titanium and cobalt-chrome alloys. Nevertheless, the routine physical activities of patients, such as walking, sitting, and running, can induce wear and tear on the materials comprising these prosthetic devices, subsequently diminishing their functionality and durability. In response to this challenge, this research has endeavored to leverage novel techniques. The primary focus of this study lies in the development of an algorithm designed to optimize hip replacement procedures via the mechanical design of the prosthesis. The spiraling growth of the world's population and unregulated urbanization have resulted in many environmental problems, including poor quality of air, which is associated with a wide range of health issues. Machine learning approaches have been extensively employed to predict air quality, attracting the attention of the scientific community worldwide. Bibliometric studies provide a useful means by which to visualize and analyze published works, helping researchers to make novel scientific contributions by filling existing knowledge gaps in the research. To acquire an in-depth understanding of the topic, this paper presents a bibliometric analysis of all published articles on the use of machine learning networks to predict air quality found in the Web of Science (WoS) search engine from 1992 to 2021. S-curve analysis and social network analysis were used to identify the temporal distribution of articles, productivity by countries/continents, research institutions, and scientific metrics of journal productivity. This study indicated that maximum expansion of the literature witnessed during 2017–2021 (second phase) which represents an expansion or growth stage of machine learning and air quality prediction research. The number of published works increased significantly with 1432 articles accounting for 68.51% of all publications. As a result of the increased interest in machine learning-based prediction tools, the number of articles grew 2.17-fold compared to the 1992–2016 (first phase). In terms of international collaboration impact, Italy emerged as the most successful country (43.44), followed by Greece (31.22) and Spain (23.29). Author keywords analysis was employed to explore and evaluate the emerging research trends on the subject of air quality using machine learning models. Keywords that appear most frequently in this study are 'air pollution', 'air quality', 'machine learning', and 'forecasting'. Citation burst analysis, research productivity analysis, highly influential and highly cited works were also employed to examine various research themes and questions. Artificial intelligence (AI) is fast becoming a general purpose technology with outstanding impacts in industries worldwide, thus supporting the Industry 4.0 revolution. In particular, the energy sector is one of those that has taken more advantages from the implementation of AI approaches, especially Machine Learning models, for several applications, including energy performance benchmarking of buildings. However, the black-box approach could lead to a lack of result interpretability thus preventing the effective application of AI in some real-world scenarios. For this reason, eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) tools can be effectively embedded within an AI-based Energy Analytics methodology in order to enhance the explainability of the model results. In this paper, we propose an explainable AI-based benchmarking framework for estimating the membership to specific energy performance classes of a large set of Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs) of flats. The classification is obtained by leveraging different black-box classifiers characterized by high accuracy, yet their inference mechanism is not human-readable. Therefore, a generalizable XAI methodology, based on the combination of a local explainer together with a clustering algorithm, is employed to explain the model results and causal effects between the predictors and target variable to better understand the model behaviour, and the motivations behind correct and wrong performed classifications. The paper provides a general methodological approach capable to exploit a limited number of instances to extract, explain and interpret inference mechanisms learnt by the model that are useful for the end-user. The knowledge of crop evapotranspiration is crucial for several hydrological processes, including those related to the management of agricultural water sources. In particular, the estimations of actual evapotranspiration fluxes within fields are essential to managing irrigation strategies to save water and preserve water resources. Among the indirect methods to estimate actual evapotranspiration, ET a , the eddy covariance (EC) method allows to acquire continuous measurement of latent heat flux (LE). However, the time series of EC measurements are sometimes characterized by a lack of data due to the sensors' malfunctions. At this aim, Machine Learning (ML) techniques could represent a powerful tool to fill possible gaps in the time series. In this paper, the ML technique was applied using the Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) algorithm to fill gaps in daily actual evapotranspiration. The technique was tested in six different plots, two in Italy, three in the United States of America, and one in Canada, with different crops and climatic conditions in order to consider the suitability of the ML model in various contexts. For each site, the climate variables were not the same, therefore, the performance of the method was investigated on the basis of the available information. Initially, a comparison of ground and reanalysis data, where both databases were available, and between two different satellite products, when both databases were available, have been conducted. Then, the GPR model was tested. The mean and the covariance functions were set by considering a database of climate variables, soil water status measurements, and remotely sensed vegetation indices. Then, five different combinations of variables were analyzed to verify the suitability of the ML approach when limited input data are available or when the weather variables are replaced with reanalysis data. Cross-validation was used to assess the performance of the procedure. The model performances were assessed based on the statistical indicators: Root Mean Square Error (RMSE), coefficient of determination (R2), Mean Absolute Error (MAE), regression coefficient (b), and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient (NSE). The quite high Nash Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) coefficient, and the root mean square error (RMSE) low values confirm the suitability of the proposed algorithm. • GPR algorithm is suitable to fill gaps in daily ET a time series. • The best m(x) and k(x,x') functions required by the GPR algorithm were identified. • The best results were obtained when the dataset included climate data, SWC and VIs. • The use of ERA5-L data and VIs retrieved by Sentinel 2 or MODIS is a good alternative. • GPR algorithm was tested for different crops in continental and temperate zones. Bayesian networks are widely used to learn and reason about the dependence structure of discrete variables. However, they can only formally encode symmetric conditional independence, which is often too strict to hold in practice. Asymmetry-labeled DAGs have been recently proposed to extend the class of Bayesian networks by relaxing the symmetric assumption of independence and denoting the dependence between the variables of interest. Here, we introduce novel structural learning algorithms for this class of models, which, whilst efficient, allow for a straightforward interpretation of the underlying dependence structure. Assessing plant water status accurately in both time and space is crucial for maintaining satisfactory crop yield and quality standards, especially in the face of a changing climate. Remote sensing technology offers a promising alternative to traditional in situ measurements for estimating stem water potential (Ψstem). In this study, we carried out field measurements of Ψstem in an irrigated olive orchard in southern Italy during the 2021 and 2022 seasons. Water status data were acquired at midday from 24 olive trees between June and October in both years. Reflectance data collected at the time of Ψstem measurements were utilized to calculate vegetation indices (VIs). Employing machine learning techniques, various prediction models were developed by considering VIs and spectral bands as predictors. Before the analyses, both datasets were randomly split into training and testing datasets. Our findings reveal that the random forest model outperformed other models, providing a more accurate prediction of olive water status (R2 = 0.78). This is the first study in the literature integrating remote sensing and machine learning techniques for the prediction of olive water status in order to improve olive orchard irrigation management, offering a practical solution for estimating Ψstem avoiding time-consuming and resource-intensive fieldwork. In this study, we introduce an innovative application of clustering algorithms to assess and appraise Italy's alignment with respect to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on those related to climate change and the agrifood market. Specifically, we examined SDG 02: Zero Hunger, SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, and SDG 13: Climate Change, to evaluate Italy's performance in one of its most critical economic sectors. Beyond performance analysis, we administered a questionnaire to a cross-section of the Italian populace to gain deeper insights into their awareness of sustainability in everyday grocery shopping and their understanding of SDGs. Furthermore, we employed an unsupervised machine learning approach in our research to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of SDGs across European countries and position Italy relative to the others. Additionally, we conducted a detailed analysis of the responses to a newly designed questionnaire to gain a reasonable description of the population's perspective on the research topic. A general poor performance in the SDGs indicators emerged for Italy. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of the spatial distribution of soil organic carbon stock (SOC stock) and the associated uncertainties in two soil layers (0–10 cm and 0–30 cm; SOC stock 10 and SOC stock 30, respectively), in Valchiavenna, an alpine valley located in northern Italy (450 km2). We employed the digital soil mapping (DSM) approach within different machine learning models, including multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS), random forest (RF), support vector regression (SVR), and elastic net (ENET). Our dataset comprised soil data from 110 profiles, with SOC stock calculations for all sampling points based on bulk density (BD), whether measured or estimated, considering the presence of rock fragments. As environmental covariates for our research, we utilized environmental variables, in particular, geomorphometric parameters derived from a digital elevation model (with a 20 m pixel resolution), land cover data, and climatic maps. To evaluate the effectiveness of our models, we evaluated their capacity to predict SOC stock 10 and SOC stock 30 using the coefficient of determination (R2). The results for the SOC stock 10 were as follows: MARS 0.39, ENET 0.41, RF 0.69, and SVR 0.50. For the SOC stock 30, the corresponding R2 values were: MARS 0.45, ENET 0.48, RF 0.65, and SVR 0.62. Additionally, we calculated the root-mean-squared error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), the bias, and Lin's concordance correlation coefficient (LCCC) for further assessment. To map the spatial distribution of SOC stock and address uncertainties in both soil layers, we chose the RF model, due to its better performance, as indicated by the highest R2 and the lowest RMSE and MAE. The resulting SOC stock maps using the RF model demonstrated an accuracy of RMSE = 1.35 kg m−2 for the SOC stock 10 and RMSE = 3.36 kg m−2 for the SOC stock 30. To further evaluate and illustrate the precision of our soil maps, we conducted an uncertainty assessment and mapping by analyzing the standard deviation (SD) from 50 iterations of the best-performing RF model. This analysis effectively highlighted the high accuracy achieved in our soil maps. The maps of uncertainty demonstrated that the RF model better predicts the SOC stock 10 compared to the SOC stock 30. A pilot study employing a template-matching approach on the detection of repeating earthquakes (or repeaters) in a small volume of the Irpinia fault (Southern Italy) is presented here. A catalog of repeaters nucleating over about a decade with local magnitudes ranging between M L 0.4 and M L 1.7 is generated. The events nucleate at depths of about 11 km over a fault patch with a size of about 600 m. Assuming a constant stress drop for all repeaters, the yearly coseismic slip rate of the patch is estimated in the range of 1–4.8 mm with a mean value of about 3.4 mm, which is close to the fault slip rate estimated by geodetic approaches. Given the mechanical properties of the medium in the source region of the repeaters revealed by previous tomographic studies, and in particular the high Vp/Vs ratio (close to 1.95), it is postulated that these events are fluid triggered, consistently with the mechanism proposed for the generation of most of the microseismicity in the area. The encouraging outcomes of this study suggest to focus future measurement campaigns on this area and open perspectives to extend this approach to other segments of the Irpinia fault to reveal small-scale frictional properties in an area capable to generate M7 earthquakes. Mosquito-borne diseases have been spreading across Europe over the past two decades, with climate change contributing to this spread. Temperature and precipitation are key factors in a mosquito's life cycle, and are greatly affected by climate change. Using a machine learning framework, Earth Observation data, and future climate projections of temperature and precipitation, this work studies three different cases (Veneto region in Italy, Upper Rhine Valley in Germany and Pancevo, Serbia) and focuses on (i) evaluating the impact of climate factors on mosquito abundance and (ii) long-term forecasting of mosquito abundance based on EURO-CORDEX future climate projections under different Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) scenarios. The study shows that increases in precipitation and temperature are directly linked to increased mosquito abundance, with temperature being the main driving factor. Additionally, as the climatic conditions become more extreme, meaning higher variance, the mosquito abundance increases. Moreover, we show that in the upcoming decades mosquito abundance is expected to increase. In the worst-case scenario (RCP8.5) Serbia will face a 10% increase, Italy around a 40% increase, and Germany will reach almost a 200% increase by 2100, relative to the decade 2010–2020. However, in terms of absolute numbers both in Italy and Germany, the expected increase is similar. An interesting finding is that either strong (RCP2.6) or moderate mitigation actions (RCP4.5) against greenhouse gas concentration lead to similar levels of future mosquito abundance, as opposed to no mitigation action at all (RCP8.5), which is projected to lead to high mosquito abundance for all cases studied. State-of-the-art snow sensing technologies currently provide an unprecedented amount of data from both remote sensing and ground sensors, but their assimilation into dynamic models is bounded to data quality, which is often low – especially in mountain, high-elevation, and unattended regions where snow is the predominant land-cover feature. To maximize the value of snow-depth measurements, we developed a random forest classifier to automatize the quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) procedure of near-surface snow-depth measurements collected through ultrasonic sensors, with particular reference to the differentiation of snow cover from grass or bare-ground data and to the detection of random errors (e.g., spikes). The model was trained and validated using a split-sample approach of an already manually classified dataset of 18 years of data from 43 sensors in Aosta Valley (northwestern Italian Alps) and then further validated using 3 years of data from 27 stations across the rest of Italy (with no further training or tuning). The F1 score was used as scoring metric, it being the most suited to describe the performances of a model in the case of a multiclass imbalanced classification problem. The model proved to be both robust and reliable in the classification of snow cover vs. grass/bare ground in Aosta Valley (F1 values above 90 %) yet less reliable in rare random-error detection, mostly due to the dataset imbalance (samples distribution: 46.46 % snow, 49.21 % grass/bare ground, 4.34 % error). No clear correlation with snow-season climatology was found in the training dataset, which further suggests the robustness of our approach. The application across the rest of Italy yielded F1 scores on the order of 90 % for snow and grass/bare ground, thus confirming results from the testing region and corroborating model robustness and reliability, with again a less skillful classification of random errors (values below 5 %). Actors of the Cooperative Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) generate various amounts of data. Useful information on various issues such as anomalies, failures, road profiles, etc., could be revealed from the analysis of these data. The analysis, could be managed by operators and vehicles, and its output could be very helpful for future decision making. In this study, we collected real data extracted from road operators. We analyzed these streams in order to verify whether abnormal behaviors could be observed in the data. Our main target was a very sensitive C-ITS failure, which is when a road-side unit (RSU) experiences transmission failure. The detection of such failure is to be achieved by end users (vehicles), which in turn would inform road operators which would then recover the failure. The data we analyzed were collected from various roads in Europe (France, Germany, and Italy) with the aim of studying the RSUs' behavior. Our mechanism offers compelling results regarding the early detection of RSU failures. We also proposed a new C-ITS message dedicated to raise alerts to road operators when required. Understanding and monitoring the ecological quality of coastal waters is crucial for preserving marine ecosystems. Eutrophication is one of the major problems affecting the ecological state of coastal marine waters. For this reason, the control of the trophic conditions of aquatic ecosystems is needed for the evaluation of their ecological quality. This study leverages space-based Sentinel-3 Ocean and Land Color Instrument imagery (OLCI) to assess the ecological quality of Mediterranean coastal waters using the Trophic Index (TRIX) key indicator. In particular, we explore the feasibility of coupling remote sensing and machine learning techniques to estimate the TRIX levels in the Ligurian, Tyrrhenian, and Ionian coastal regions of Italy. Our research reveals distinct geographical patterns in TRIX values across the study area, with some regions exhibiting eutrophic conditions near estuaries and others showing oligotrophic characteristics. We employ the Random Forest Regression algorithm, optimizing calibration parameters to predict TRIX levels. Feature importance analysis highlights the significance of latitude, longitude, and specific spectral bands in TRIX prediction. A final statistical assessment validates our model's performance, demonstrating a moderate level of error (MAE of 0.51) and explanatory power (R2 of 0.37). These results highlight the potential of Sentinel-3 OLCI imagery in assessing ecological quality, contributing to our understanding of coastal water ecology. They also underscore the importance of merging remote sensing and machine learning in environmental monitoring and management. This study introduces a novel hybrid forecasting model for wind power generation. It integrates Artificial Neural Networks, data clustering, and Particle Swarm Optimization algorithms. The methodology employs a systematic framework: initial clustering of weather data via the k-means algorithm, followed by Pearson's analysis to pinpoint pivotal elements in each cluster. Subsequently, a Multi-Layer Perceptron Artificial Neural Network undergoes training with a Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm, enhancing convergence and minimizing prediction discrepancies. An important focus of this study is to streamline wind forecasting. By judiciously utilizing only sixteen observation points near a wind farm plant, in contrast to the complex global numerical weather prediction systems employed by the European Center Medium Weather Forecast, which rely on thousands of data points, this approach not only enhances forecast accuracy but also significantly simplifies the modeling process. Validation is performed using data from the Italian National Meteorological Centre. Comparative assessments against both a persistence model and actual wind farm data from Southern Italy substantiate the superior performance of the proposed hybrid model. Specifically, the clustered Particle Swarm Optimization-Artificial Neural Network-Wind Forecasting Method demonstrates a noteworthy improvement, with a reduction in mean absolute percentage error of up to 59.47% and a decrease in root mean square error of up to 52.27% when compared to the persistence model. Background: Resilience is defined as the ability to modify thoughts to cope with stressful events. Patients with schizophrenia (SCZ) having higher resilience (HR) levels show less severe symptoms and better real-life functioning. However, the clinical factors contributing to determine resilience levels in patients remain unclear. Thus, based on psychological, historical, clinical and environmental variables, we built a supervised machine learning algorithm to classify patients with HR or lower resilience (LR). Methods: SCZ from the Italian Network for Research on Psychoses (N = 598 in the Discovery sample, N = 298 in the Validation sample) underwent historical, clinical, psychological, environmental and resilience assessments. A Support Vector Machine algorithm (based on 85 variables extracted from the above-mentioned assessments) was built in the Discovery sample, and replicated in the Validation sample, to classify between HR and LR patients, within a nested, Leave-Site-Out Cross-Validation framework. We then investigated whether algorithm decision scores were associated with the cognitive and clinical characteristics of patients. Results: The algorithm classified patients as HR or LR with a Balanced Accuracy of 74.5% (p < 0.0001) in the Discovery sample, and 80.2% in the Validation sample. Higher self-esteem, larger social network and use of adaptive coping strategies were the variables most frequently chosen by the algorithm to generate decisions. Correlations between algorithm decision scores, socio-cognitive abilities, and symptom severity were significant (p FDR < 0.05). Conclusions: We identified an accurate, meaningful and generalizable clinical-psychological signature associated with resilience in SCZ. During the recent Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak, the microblogging service Twitter has been widely used to share opinions and reactions to events. Italy was one of the first European countries to be severely affected by the outbreak and to establish lockdown and stay-at-home orders, potentially leading to country reputation damage. We resort to sentiment analysis to investigate changes in opinions about Italy reported on Twitter before and after the COVID-19 outbreak. Using different lexicons-based methods, we find a breakpoint corresponding to the date of the first established case of COVID-19 in Italy that causes a relevant change in sentiment scores used as a proxy of the country's reputation. Next, we demonstrate that sentiment scores about Italy are associated with the values of the FTSE-MIB index, the Italian Stock Exchange main index, as they serve as early detection signals of changes in the values of FTSE-MIB. Lastly, we evaluate whether different machine learning classifiers were able to determine the polarity of tweets posted before and after the outbreak with a different level of accuracy. Nowadays, quick, and accurate diagnosis of COVID-19 is a pressing need. This study presents a multimodal system to meet this need. The presented system employs a machine learning module that learns the required knowledge from the datasets collected from 930 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Italy during the first wave of COVID-19 (March–June 2020). The dataset consists of twenty-five biomarkers from electronic health record and Chest X-ray (CXR) images. It is found that the system can diagnose low- or high-risk patients with an accuracy, sensitivity, and F1-score of 89.03%, 90.44%, and 89.03%, respectively. The system exhibits 6% higher accuracy than the systems that employ either CXR images or biomarker data. In addition, the system can calculate the mortality risk of high-risk patients using multivariate logistic regression-based nomogram scoring technique. Interested physicians can use the presented system to predict the early mortality risks of COVID-19 patients using the web-link: Covid-severity-grading-AI. In this case, a physician needs to input the following information: CXR image file, Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH), Oxygen Saturation (O2%), White Blood Cells Count, C-reactive protein, and Age. The joint exploitation of data related to epidemiological, mobility, and restriction aspects of COVID-19 with machine learning algorithms can support the development of predictive models that can be used to forecast new positive cases and study the impact of more or less severe restrictions. In this work, we integrate heterogeneous data from several sources and solve a multivariate time series forecasting task, specifically targeting the Italian case at both national and regional levels, during the first three waves of the pandemic. The goal is to build a robust predictive model to predict the number of new cases over a given time horizon so that any restrictive actions can be better planned. In addition, we perform a what-if analysis based on the best-identified predictive models to evaluate the impact of specific restrictions on the trend of positive cases. Our focus on the first three waves is motivated by the fact that it represents a typical emergency scenario (when no stable cure or vaccine is available) that may occur when a new pandemic spreads. Our experimental results prove that exploiting the considered heterogeneous data leads to accurate predictive models, reaching a WAPE of 5.75% at the national level. Furthermore, in the subsequent what-if analysis, we observed that strong all-in-one initiatives, such as total lockdowns, may not be adequate, while more specific and targeted solutions should be adopted. The developed models can help policy and decision-makers better plan intervention strategies and retrospectively analyze the effects of the decisions made at different scales. In Italy, most of the destructive landslides are triggered by rainfall, particularly in central Italy. Therefore, effective monitoring of rainfall is crucial in hazard management and ecosystem assessment. Global precipitation measurement (GPM) is the next-generation satellite mission, which provides the precipitation measurements worldwide. In this research, we employed the available monthly GPM data to estimate the monthly precipitation for the twenty administrative regions of Italy from June 2000 to June 2021. For each region, we applied the non-parametric Mann–Kendall test and its associated Sen's slope to estimate the precipitation trend for each calendar month. In addition, for each region, we estimated a linear trend and the seasonal cycles of precipitation with the antileakage least-squares spectral analysis (ALLSSA) and showed the annual precipitation variations using box plots. Lastly, we compared machine-learning models based on the auto-regressive moving average for monthly precipitation forecasting and showed that ALLSSA outperformed them. The findings of this research provide a significant insight into processing climate data, both in terms of trend-season estimates and forecasting, and can potentially be used in landslide susceptibility analysis. In this work, we present an intelligent system for the automatic categorization of political documents, specifically the documents containing the parliamentary questions collected during the weekly Question Times at the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Republic. The proposed intelligent system leverages text classification models to perform the document categorization. The system is aimed at supporting and facilitating the research activities of political science scholars, who deal with comparative and longitudinal analysis of thousands of documents. Machine learning (ML) algorithms are extensively used with outstanding prediction accuracy. However, in some cases, their overfitting capabilities, along with inadvertent biases, might produce overly optimistic results. Spatial data are a special kind of data that could introduce biases to ML due to their intrinsic spatial autocorrelation. To address this issue, a special resampling method has emerged called spatial cross-validation (SCV). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of SCV compared with conventional random cross-validation (CCV) used in most ML studies. Multiple ML models were created with CCV and SCV to predict groundwater electrical conductivity (EC) with data (A) from Rhodope, Greece, in the summer of 2020; (B) from the same area but at a different time (summer 2019); and (C) from a new area (the Salento peninsula, Italy). The results showed that the SCV provides ML models with superior generalization capabilities and, hence, better prediction results in new unknown data. The SCV seems to be able to capture the spatial patterns in the data while also reducing the over-optimism bias that is often associated with CCV methods.
