Antibiotic residues accumulation in the environment endangers ecosystems and human health. There is an urgent need for a facile and efficient strategy to detect antibiotics. Here, we report a photoluminescent sensor array based on protein-stabilized gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) for the detection of two families of antibiotics, tetracyclines and quinolones. The nanoclusters were synthesized with bovine serum albumin (BSA) and ovalbumin (OVA), respectively. They had different interactions with seven kinds of antibiotics and exhibited diverse photoluminescence (PL) responses, which were analyzed by linear discriminant analysis and ExtraTrees algorithms. The sensor array performed well in both classification and quantification of seven antibiotics. And the quantitative results of all antibiotics obtained R2 of no less than 0.99 at 0–100 μM when using suitable regression models. Additionally, the sensor array was able to distinguish antibiotic mixtures and multiple interfering substances, and it also kept 100% classification accuracy in river water samples. Moreover, test paper assisted by a smartphone was applied for quick detection of antibiotics, with good performance in both HEPES buffer and river water. This study demonstrates how a colorimetric biosensor based on microfluidic paper can swiftly diagnose a disease and predict its prognosis to triage patients effectively. This was the first biosensor to quantify the gold standard cardiac troponin (cTnI) and lipid biomarkers, including high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) simultaneously. Prior research encountered obstacles or limitations, such as measuring a single biomarker or total cholesterol, which cannot distinguish between LDL and HDL. CatBoost, an advanced machine learning (ML) technique used for diagnosis that combines the predictive power of ML algorithms obtained an impressive area under the receiver operating curves (AUROC) of 0.97 ± 0.018 for all possible classification thresholds. CatBoost is a brand-new ensemble framework based on the interaction of multiple health parameters that can generate AUROC values of 0.897 ± 0.047 for the accurate prognosis of recurrent acute myocardial infarction (AMI), demonstrating remarkably accurate AMI diagnosis and prognosis. In addition, this paper-based analytical device (µPAD) biosensor employs an electrophoretic method to overcome the challenges posed by non-specific adsorption. This is accomplished by isolating non-specific biomolecules based on differences in their isoelectric points and removing non-specifically adsorbing colorimetric markers. The limits of detection (LoD) for cTnI in AMI were lower than their respective clinical cutoff values. This study also demonstrated that the proposed ML framework produced significantly better results than conventional statistical analysis. High correlation filtering and (t-SNE) dimensionality reduction were utilized for a limited number of data points. Efficient feature representation combined with machine learning classifiers has yielded significant improvement in text classification. However, the effectiveness of such combinations has not been analyzed for citation sentiment analysis. This study aims to investigate pattern recognition using machine learning models in combination with frequency-based and prediction-based feature representation techniques with and without using Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) on publicly available citation sentiment dataset. The experimental data were preprocessed using baseline removal, CCM, TDSCM, and TDACM methods. Four machine learning models were employed to evaluate the effects of these methods: principal component analysis (PCA) combined with linear regression (LR), support vector machine (SVM) combined with LR, k-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), and random forest (RF). The results show that the R-squared values for the PCA model were nearly 1 for all types of data, indicating high accuracy. However, for SVM-LR, KNN, and RF models, the R-squared values were sorted in the order of raw data, baseline removal data, CCM, TDSCM, and TDACM preprocessed data. The R-squared values of KNN and RF machine learning models for TDACM preprocessed data were approaching 1, indicating that the accuracy of machine learning was significantly improved by nearly 100%. A label-free detection method for noninvasive biofluids enables rapid on-site disease screening and early-stage cancer diagnosis by analyzing metabolic alterations. Herein, we develop three-dimensional plasmonic hexaplex nanostructures coated on a paper substrate (3D-PHP). This flexible and highly absorptive 3D-PHP sensor is integrated with commercial saliva collection tube to create an efficient on-site sensing platform for lung cancer screening via surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) measurement of human saliva. The multispike hexaplex-shaped gold nanostructure enhances contact with saliva viscosity, enabling effective sampling and SERS enhancement. Through testing patient salivary samples, the 3D-PHP sensor demonstrates successful lung cancer detection and diagnosis. A logistic regression-based machine learning model successfully classifies benign and malignant patients, exhibiting high clinical sensitivity and specificity. Additionally, important Raman peak positions related to different lung cancer stages are investigated, suggesting insights for early-stage cancer diagnosis. Machine learning (ML), a form of artificial intelligence (AI), is being increasingly employed in neurology. Reported performance metrics often match or exceed the efficiency of average clinicians. The neurologist is easily baffled by the underlying concepts and terminologies associated with ML studies. The superlative performance metrics of ML algorithms often hide the opaque nature of its inner workings. Questions regarding ML model's interpretability and reproducibility of its results in real-world scenarios, need emphasis. Given an abundance of time and information, the expert clinician should be able to deliver comparable predictions to ML models, a useful benchmark while evaluating its performance. Predictive performance metrics of ML models should not be confused with causal inference between its input and output. ML and clinical gestalt should compete in a randomized controlled trial before they can complement each other for screening, triaging, providing second opinions and modifying treatment. Fractures in body-centered-cubic metals and alloys below the ductile-to-brittle transition temperature are brittle. This is theoretically explained by the notion that the critical stress intensity factor of a given crack front for brittle fracture is smaller than that for plastic deformation; hence, brittle fracture is selected over plastic deformation. Although this view is true from a macroscopic perspective, such a fracture is always accompanied by small-scale plastic deformation near the crack tip, that is, crack tip plasticity. This paper investigates the origin of this plasticity using atomistic modeling with the machine learning interatomic potential of α -Fe. Some plastic modes are activated by rapid crack propagation, whereas no plasticity is activated when the crack tips are gradually fractured. • 252 chemicals were identified by SNTS in groundwater from four regions with diverse contamination histories. • A novel and robust systematic machine learning-based workflow for predicting chemical indicators was proposed. • The proposed workflow showed good predictive ability (Q2) of 0.897. • 51 chemical indicators for tracking groundwater contamination sources were suggested. In this study, the strong analytical power of gas chromatography coupled to a high resolution mass spectrometry (GC-HRMS) in suspect and non-target screening (SNTS) of organic micropollutants was combined with machine learning tools for proposing a novel and robust systematic environmental forensics workflow, focusing on groundwater contamination. Groundwater samples were collected from four different regions with diverse contamination histories (namely oil [OC], agricultural [AGR], industrial [IND], and landfill [LF]), and a total of 252 organic micropollutants were identified, including pharmaceuticals, personal care products, pesticides, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, plasticizers, phenols, organophosphate flame retardants, transformation products, and others, with detection frequencies ranging from 3 % to 100 %. Amongst the SNTS identified compounds, a total of 51 chemical indicators (i.e., OC: 13, LF: 12, AGR: 19, IND: 7) which included level 1 and 2 SNTS identified chemicals were pinpointed across all sampling regions by integrating a bootstrapped feature selection method involving the bootfs algorithm and a partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) model to determine potential prevalent contamination sources. The proposed workflow showed good predictive ability (Q2) of 0.897, and the suggested contamination sources were gasoline, diesel, and/or other light petroleum products for the OC region, anthropogenic activities for the LF region, agricultural and human activities for the AGR region, and industrial/human activities for the IND region. These results suggest that the proposed workflow can select a subset of the most diagnostic features in the chemical space that can best distinguish a specific contamination source class. AbstractWidespread innovation from artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) tools presents a lucrative opportunity for the nuclear industry to improve state-of-the-art analyses (e.g. condition monitoring, remote operation, etc.) due to increased data visibility. In recent years, the risk posed by collaborative data exchange has received increased attention due, in part, to a potential adversary’s ability to reverse-engineer intercepted data using domain knowledge and AI/ML tools. While the efficacy of typical encryption has been proven during passive communication and data storage, collaborative exchange typically requires decryption for extended analyses by a third-party, which poses an intrinsic risk due to these trustworthiness concerns. In contrast to existing state-of-the-art data masking methods, DIOD does not impose limiting assumptions, computational overheads, or induced uncertainties, thereby allowing for secure and flexible data-level security that does not alter the inferential content of the data. This paper focuses on the application of DIOD to a process-based simulation wherein a leaking reservoir with a controlled inlet pump is simulated under various experimental conditions with the goal of producing masked data that preserve the information given by anomalies. These experiments included the injection of statistically significant anomalies, subtle anomalies that occurred over an extended period, and the addition of several independent anomalous states. Each experiment showed that a classifier will identify the same anomalies whether it analyzes the original or masked data. An additional experiment also tested the case of corrupted labeling information wherein labels were arbitrarily randomized, and the loss in labeling accuracy was about the same for both datasets. Stationary hydrogen energy-based power plants generating electricity to supply high-powered plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) have recently become popular in renewable energy-based power plants. Besides, in a PEV charging station, various types of powered charge devices can be established such as DC fast chargers or 3.7 kW, 7.4 kW, 11 kW, and 22 kW AC chargers. This paper introduces a demand-side management-oriented optimal charging strategy that includes two stages for PEVs in a hydrogen energy-based microgrid. The paper focuses on two stages to execute an optimal charging of PEVs in compliance with their users' requests and satisfaction and considering the power system loading. It is assumed that there are three types of chargers in the PEV charging station and the users. In the first stage randomly created requests are classified by an ensemble learning classifier method that performs higher performance classification by combining the results from multiple classifiers in a machine learning classification. The second stage schedules the PEVs according to the classification results and users' requests. To test the proposed system, first random requests are created then they are sent to the classifier, and the results of classifiers are scheduled in each other. The demand-side management-oriented charge scheduling and managing strategy which includes the proposed two stages has been compared with non-managed cases. Case study results reveal that the proposed approach provides 52.1% peak load reduction and 72.3% valley filling improvement by the SOS algorithm. The results highlight the advantages of the proposed system in terms of peak reduction and valley filling. With the advent of the semiconductor age and later the age of nanotechnology, the thin film and coating field have established their importance and reasons for doing in-depth studies. Different sophisticated physical techniques, like chemical vapor deposition, sputtering, evaporation, molecular beam epitaxy, etc., and the conventional spin coating or dip coating, have been employed to get thin films of specific materials/compounds. Of all these, physical techniques are particularly preferred for their ability to develop good quality thin film with high uniformity. In the field of experimental material science, there are tremendous efforts in thin film development and the study of their different properties. The properties include topological, electrical, electronic, optical, or other. At the same time, though less explored, there are developments of theoretical understanding regarding the basic mechanism of thin film growth by specific growth mechanism. In doing this, the basic mechanism of thin film growth has been categorized into different broad classes with specific features. The main features include the time dependence of interface width and values of different scaling exponents. Apart from these, studies also addressed different morphological, optical, or electrical properties of the as-grown thin films of specific material. This paper gathers the existing literature that reports the simulation-based theoretical studies related to thin film growth by different algorithms like random deposition, ballistic deposition, random deposition with surface relaxation, or their different combinations. Not only that, but the paper also summarizes different reports related to the simulation-based prediction of the material properties. As the topic is relatively new, the collection of reports added in the last 20 years has been considered.The paper has different sections. Historical architecture has different special styles attributed to each era, dynasty, or region. These styles are common features such as geometric properties, ratios, scales, colors, and artistic techniques. Historical geometric ornaments have an enormous capability for classification based on their geometric characteristics. Smart pattern recognition allows researchers to classify huge databases of heritage for useful internet searches. So, our main goal in this paper is to implement the detection of categories in geometric patterns for classification and documentation in which by the photography of ornaments in every monument, the type of patterns and the number of every type of pattern would be estimated quickly. Furthermore, due to occurring deterioration in these patterns, our method also contributes to recognizing the deteriorated patterns. When we encounter numerous pieces of deteriorated patterns, manual recognition in order to reassemble and reconstruct is usually impossible or time-consuming. With the aid of artificial intelligence, in this paper, our aim is to seek to solve the automatic recognition of historical geometric patterns, even patterns having deterioration as an occlusion via image processing and machine learning methods. A challenging issue that researchers would tackle in detecting historical geometric pattern's types is the variety in geometric textures, especially when they have occlusion such as deterioration. This issue leads to limited success in classifying via extracting only one feature. The other issue is that the extracted feature must be invariant to the transformation, such as scale, rotation, and noise variation. To cope with the challenges mentioned above and accurately classify, we plan to use the fusion method based on extracting global and local features. So, the features extracted from images in this research are based on local and global. In other words, the proposed fusion strategy lies both in feature and decision level, but the core is the proposed three combination methods in fusion decision methods. In this method, the dataset is composed of four main Persian geometric pattern types: Tond dah, Kond tablghenas, Hashtva 4 lengeh, and HashtvatablKond. So, the model will be trained by extracting global and local features of the images separately. Random forest, as the prevalent machine learning algorithm, is proposed for training data and predicting the class of input images. Finally, the probability of prediction for random forest classifiers is fused by the Decision Templates (DT) combiner, Naïve Bayes (NB) combiner, and Dempster–Shafer combination methods. In comparison with the individual classifier accuracy results of 80% and 85% for global and local features respectively, our proposed approach achieves an improved accuracy of 90%, 88%, and 90% in three fusion decision methods including DT combiner, NB combiner, and Dempster–Shafer combination methods. In recent times, video inpainting techniques have intended to fill the missing areas or gaps in a video by utilizing known pixels. The variety in brightness or difference of the patches causes the state-of-the-art video inpainting techniques to exhibit high computation complexity and create seams in the target areas. To resolve these issues, this paper introduces a novel video inpainting technique that employs the Morphological Haar Wavelet Transform combined with the Krill Herd based Criminisi algorithm (MHWT-KHCA) to address the challenges of high computational demand and visible seam artifacts in current inpainting practices. The proposed MHWT-KHCA algorithm strategically reduces computation times and enhances the seamlessness of the inpainting process in videos. Through a series of experiments, the technique is validated against standard metrics such as peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and structural similarity index (SSIM), where it demonstrates superior performance compared to existing methods. Additionally, the paper outlines potential real-world applications ranging from video restoration to real-time surveillance enhancement, highlighting the technique's versatility and effectiveness. This paper addresses the problem of accurate and interpretable prediction of energy consumption in residential buildings. The solution that we propose in this work employs the knowledge discovery machine learning approach combining fuzzy systems with evolutionary optimization. The contribution of this work is twofold, including both methodology and experimental investigations. As far as methodological contribution is concerned, in this paper, we present an original designing procedure of fuzzy rule-based prediction systems (FRBPSs) for accurate and transparent energy consumption prediction in residential buildings. The proposed FRBPSs are characterized by a genetically optimized accuracy–interpretability trade-off. The trade-off optimization is carried out by means of multi-objective evolutionary optimization algorithms—in particular, by our generalization of the well-known strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm 2 (SPEA2). The proposed FRBPSs' designing procedure is our original extension and generalization (for regression problems operating on continuous outputs) of an approach to designing fuzzy rule-based classifiers (FRBCs) we developed earlier and published in 2020 in this journal. FRBCs operate on discrete outputs, i.e., class labels. The experimental contribution of this work includes designing the collection of FRBPSs for residential building energy consumption prediction using the data set published in 2024 and available from Kaggle Database Repository. Moreover, the comparison with 20 available alternative approaches is carried out, demonstrating that our approach significantly outperforms alternative methods in terms of interpretability and transparency of the energy consumption predictions made while remaining comparable or slightly superior in terms of the accuracy of those predictions. Brain stroke, or a cerebrovascular accident, is a devastating medical condition that disrupts the blood supply to the brain, depriving it of oxygen and nutrients. Each year, according to the World Health Organization, 15 million people worldwide experience a stroke. This results in approximately 5 million deaths and another 5 million individuals suffering permanent disabilities. The complex interplay of various risk factors highlights the urgent need for sophisticated analytical methods to more accurately predict stroke risks and manage their outcomes. Machine learning and deep learning technologies offer promising solutions by analyzing extensive datasets including patient demographics, health records, and lifestyle choices to uncover patterns and predictors not easily discernible by humans. These technologies enable advanced data processing, analysis, and fusion techniques for a comprehensive health assessment. We conducted a comprehensive review of 25 review papers published between 2020 and 2024 on machine learning and deep learning applications in brain stroke diagnosis, focusing on classification, segmentation, and object detection. Furthermore, all these reviews explore the performance evaluation and validation of advanced sensor systems in these areas, enhancing predictive health monitoring and personalized care recommendations. Moreover, we also provide a collection of the most relevant datasets used in brain stroke analysis. The selection of the papers was conducted according to PRISMA guidelines. Furthermore, this review critically examines each domain, identifies current challenges, and proposes future research directions, emphasizing the potential of AI methods in transforming health monitoring and patient care. In the face of increasing climate variability and the complexities of modern power grids, managing power outages in electric utilities has emerged as a critical challenge. This paper introduces a novel predictive model employing machine learning algorithms, including decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), k-nearest neighbors (KNN), and extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost). Leveraging historical sensors-based and non-sensors-based outage data from a Turkish electric utility company, the model demonstrates adaptability to diverse grid structures, considers meteorological and non-meteorological outage causes, and provides real-time feedback to customers to effectively address the problem of power outage duration. Using the XGBoost algorithm with the minimum redundancy maximum relevance (MRMR) feature selection attained 98.433% accuracy in predicting outage durations, better than the state-of-the-art methods showing 85.511% accuracy on average over various datasets, a 12.922% improvement. This study aims to demonstrate the feasibility of using a new wireless electroencephalography (EEG)–electromyography (EMG) wearable approach to generate characteristic EEG-EMG mixed patterns with mouth movements in order to detect distinct movement patterns for severe speech impairments. This paper describes a method for detecting mouth movement based on a new signal processing technology suitable for sensor integration and machine learning applications. This paper examines the relationship between the mouth motion and the brainwave in an effort to develop nonverbal interfacing for people who have lost the ability to communicate, such as people with paralysis. A set of experiments were conducted to assess the efficacy of the proposed method for feature selection. It was determined that the classification of mouth movements was meaningful. EEG-EMG signals were also collected during silent mouthing of phonemes. A few-shot neural network was trained to classify the phonemes from the EEG-EMG signals, yielding classification accuracy of 95%. To deal with the highly nonlinear and time-varying characteristics of Batch Process, a model named adaptive stacking approximate kernel based broad learning system is proposed in this paper. This model innovatively introduces the approximate kernel based broad learning system (AKBLS) algorithm and the Adaptive Stacking framework, giving it strong nonlinear fitting ability, excellent generalization ability, and adaptive ability. The Broad Learning System (BLS) is known for its shorter training time for effective nonlinear processing, but the uncertainty brought by its double random mapping results in poor resistance to noisy data and unpredictable impact on performance. To address this issue, this paper proposes an AKBLS algorithm that reduces uncertainty, eliminates redundant features, and improves prediction accuracy by projecting feature nodes into the kernel space. It also significantly reduces the computation time of the kernel matrix by searching for approximate kernels to enhance its ability in industrial online applications. Extensive comparative experiments on various public datasets of different sizes validate this. The Adaptive Stacking framework utilizes the Stacking ensemble learning method, which integrates predictions from multiple AKBLS models using a meta-learner to improve generalization. Additionally, by employing the moving window method—where a fixed-length window slides through the database over time—the model gains adaptive ability, allowing it to better respond to gradual changes in industrial Batch Process. As a research hot topic in the field of network security, the implementation of machine learning, such as federated learning, involves information interactions among a large number of distributed network devices. If we regard these distributed network devices and connection relationships as a complex network, we can identify the influential nodes to find the crucial points for optimizing the imbalance of the reliability of devices in federated learning system. This paper will analyze the advantages and disadvantages of existing algorithms for identifying influential nodes in complex networks, and propose a method from the perspective of information dissemination for finding influential nodes based on Kullback–Leibler divergence model within the neighborhood (KLN). Firstly, the KLN algorithm removes a node to simulate the scenario of node failure in the information dissemination process. Secondly, KLN evaluates the loss of information entropy within the neighborhood after node removal by establishing the KL divergence model. Finally, it assesses the damage influence of the removed node by integrating the network attributes and KL divergence model, thus achieving the evaluation of node importance. To validate the performance of KLN, this paper conducts an analysis and comparison of its results with those of 11 other algorithms on 10 networks, using SIR model as a reference. Additionally, a case study was undertaken on a real epidemic propagation network, leading to the proposal of management and control strategies for daily protection based on the influential nodes. The experimental results indicate that KLN effectively evaluates the importance of the removed node using KL model within the neighborhood, and demonstrate better accuracy and applicability across networks of different scales. Over the years the number of research publications per year is growing exponentially. Finding research papers of quality from the massive literature of relevant articles is a challenging and time-consuming task. The approaches in the latest literature address citation recommendation by utilizing large bibliographic information and use machine learning and deep learning methods for the task. These techniques clearly require a large amount of training data as well as machines with high processing power. To overcome these issues, we propose a novel method by modifying the popular hyperlink induced topic search (HITS), a web page ranking algorithm, as citation recommendation using hyperlink induced topic search (CR-HITS) that works on a directed and weighted heterogeneous bibliographic network containing diverse types of nodes and edges. We define effective scoring schemes for nodes and edges based on basic bibliographic information like citations of papers, number of publications of an author, etc. Given a few seed papers, the citation recommendation algorithm CR-HITS is run on small neighborhoods of the seed papers and hence the time taken by the execution is very small to yield the final recommendations. To the best of our knowledge, HITS has been used for the first time for the citation recommendation problem. We perform extensive experimentation on DBLP (version-11) and ACM (version-9) datasets and compare the results with many baseline methods in terms of MAP, MRR, and recall@N measures. The performance of the proposed algorithms is superior with respect to the MAP metric and matches the second best for the other two metrics. Since the top two algorithms use deep learning methods and use much larger bibliographic information including abstracts of the papers, we claim that our approach utilizes very low resources, yet yields recommendations that are very close to the top recommendations. Sleep stages can provide valuable insights into an individual's sleep quality. By leveraging movement and heart rate data collected by modern smartwatches, it is possible to enable the sleep staging feature and enhance users' understanding about their sleep and health conditions. In this paper, we present and validate a recurrent neural network based model with 23 input features extracted from accelerometer and photoplethysmography sensors data for both healthy and sleep apnea populations. We designed a lightweight and fast solution to enable the prediction of sleep stages for each 30-s epoch. This solution was developed using a large dataset of 1522 night recordings collected from a highly heterogeneous population and different versions of Samsung smartwatch. In the classification of four sleep stages (wake, light, deep, and rapid eye movements sleep), the proposed solution achieved 71.6 % of balanced accuracy and a Cohen's kappa of 0.56 in a test set with 586 recordings. The results presented in this paper validate our proposal as a competitive wearable solution for sleep staging. Additionally, the use of a large and diverse data set contributes to the robustness of our solution, and corroborates the validation of algorithm's performance. Recent increases in global food demand have made this research and, therefore, the prediction of agricultural commodity prices, almost imperative. The aim of this paper is to build efficient artificial intelligence methods to effectively forecast commodity prices in light of these global events. Using three separate, well-structured models, the commodity prices of eleven major agricultural commodities that have recently caused crises around the world have been predicted. In achieving its objective, this paper proposes a novel forecasting model for agricultural commodity prices using the extreme learning machine technique optimized with the genetic algorithm. In predicting the eleven commodities, the proposed model, the extreme learning machine with the genetic algorithm, outperforms the model formed by the combination of long short-term memory with the genetic algorithm and the autoregressive integrated moving average model. Despite the fluctuations and changes in agricultural commodity prices in 2022, the extreme learning machine with the genetic algorithm model described in this study successfully predicts both qualitative and quantitative behavior in such a large number of commodities and over such a long period of time for the first time. It is expected that these predictions will provide benefits for the effective management, direction and, if necessary, restructuring of agricultural policies by providing food requirements that adapt to the dynamic structure of the countries. General physicians misclassify depression in more than half of the cases. Researchers have explored the feasibility of leveraging passively collected data points, also called digital biomarkers, to provide more granular understanding of depression phenotypes as well as a more objective assessment of disease. This paper provides a systematic review following the PRISMA guidelines (Page et al., 2021) to understand which digital biomarkers might be relevant for passive screening of depression. Pubmed and PsycInfo were systematically searched for studies published from 2019 to early 2024, resulting in 161 records assessed for eligibility. Excluded were intervention studies, studies focusing on a different disease or those with a lack of passive data collection. 74 studies remained for a quality assessment, after which 27 studies were included. The review shows that depressed participants' real-life behavior such as reduced communication with others can be tracked by passive data. Machine learning models for the classification of depression have shown accuracies up to 0.98, surpassing the quality of many standardized assessment methods. Inconsistency of outcome reporting of current studies does not allow for drawing statistical conclusions regarding effectiveness of individual included features. The Covid-19 pandemic might have impacted the ongoing studies between 2020 and 2022. While digital biomarkers allow real-life tracking of participant's behavior and symptoms, further work is required to align the feature engineering of digital biomarkers. Multimodal learning analytics (MMLA) research has made significant progress in modelling collaboration quality for the purpose of understanding collaboration behaviour and building automated collaboration estimation models. Deploying these automated models in authentic classroom scenarios, however, remains a challenge. This paper presents findings from an evaluation of collaboration quality estimation models. We collected audio, video and log data from two different Estonian schools. These data were used in different combinations to build collaboration estimation models and then assessed across different subjects, different types of activities (collaborative‐writing, group‐discussion) and different schools. Our results suggest that the automated collaboration model can generalize to the context of different schools but with a 25% degradation in balanced accuracy (from 82% to 57%). Moreover, the results also indicate that multimodality brings more performance improvement in the case of group‐discussion‐based activities than collaborative‐writing‐based activities. Further, our results suggest that the video data could be an alternative for understanding collaboration in authentic settings where higher‐quality audio data cannot be collected due to contextual factors. Considering the load uncertainty and unmodeled dynamics in multicylinder hydraulic systems, this paper proposes a balance control algorithm based on safe reinforcement learning to release the restrictions of classical model-based control methods that depend on fixed gain. In this paper, the hydraulic press is controlled by a trained agent that directly maps the system states to control commands in an end-to-end manner. By introducing an action modifier into the algorithm, the system states are kept within security constraints from the beginning of training, making safe exploration possible. Furthermore, a normalized exponential reward function has been proposed. Compared with a quadratic reward function, the precision is greatly improved under the same training steps. The experiment shows that our algorithm can achieve high precision and fast balance for multicylinder hydraulic presses while being highly robust. This paper provides a comprehensive review of tree-based models and their application in condition assessment and prediction of water, wastewater, and sewer pipe failures. Tree-based models have gained significant attention in recent years due to their effectiveness in capturing complex relationships between parameters of systems and their ability in handling large data sets. This study explores a range of tree-based models, including decision trees and ensemble trees utilizing bagging, boosting, and stacking strategies. The paper thoroughly examines the strengths and limitations of these models, specifically in the context of assessing the pipes' condition and predicting their failures. In most cases, tree-based algorithms outperformed other prevalent models. Random forest was found to be the most frequently used approach in this field. Moreover, the models successfully predicted the failures when augmented with a richer failure data set. Background: Enhancing Local Control (LC) of brain metastases is pivotal for improving overall survival, which makes the prediction of local treatment failure a crucial aspect of treatment planning. Understanding the factors that influence LC of brain metastases is imperative for optimizing treatment strategies and subsequently extending overall survival. Machine learning algorithms may help to identify factors that predict outcomes. Methods: This paper systematically reviews these factors associated with LC to select candidate predictor features for a practical application of predictive modeling. A systematic literature search was conducted to identify studies in which the LC of brain metastases is assessed for adult patients. EMBASE, PubMed, Web-of-Science, and the Cochrane Database were searched up to December 24, 2020. All studies investigating the LC of brain metastases as one of the endpoints were included, regardless of primary tumor type or treatment type. We first grouped studies based on primary tumor types resulting in lung, breast, and melanoma groups. Studies that did not focus on a specific primary cancer type were grouped based on treatment types resulting in surgery, SRT, and whole-brain radiotherapy groups. For each group, significant factors associated with LC were identified and discussed. As a second project, we assessed the practical importance of selected features in predicting LC after Stereotactic Radiotherapy (SRT) with a Random Forest machine learning model. Accuracy and Area Under the Curve (AUC) of the Random Forest model, trained with the list of factors that were found to be associated with LC for the SRT treatment group, were reported. Results: The systematic literature search identified 6270 unique records. After screening titles and abstracts, 410 full texts were considered, and ultimately 159 studies were included for review. Most of the studies focused on the LC of the brain metastases for a specific primary tumor type or after a specific treatment type. Higher SRT radiation dose was found to be associated with better LC in lung cancer, breast cancer, and melanoma groups. Also, a higher dose was associated with better LC in the SRT group, while higher tumor volume was associated with worse LC in this group. The Random Forest model predicted the LC of brain metastases with an accuracy of 80% and an AUC of 0.84. Conclusion: This paper thoroughly examines factors associated with LC in brain metastases and highlights the translational value of our findings for selecting variables to predict LC in a sample of patients who underwent SRT. Retained surgical items (RSIs) pose significant risks to patients and healthcare professionals, prompting extensive efforts to reduce their incidence. RSIs are objects inadvertently left within patients' bodies after surgery, which can lead to severe consequences such as infections and death. The repercussions highlight the critical need to address this issue. Machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) have displayed considerable potential for enhancing the prevention of RSIs through heightened precision and decreased reliance on human involvement. ML techniques are finding an expanding number of applications in medicine, ranging from automated imaging analysis to diagnosis. DL has enabled substantial advances in the prediction capabilities of computers by combining the availability of massive volumes of data with extremely effective learning algorithms. This paper reviews and evaluates recently published articles on the application of ML and DL in RSIs prevention and diagnosis, stressing the need for a multi-layered approach that leverages each method's strengths to mitigate RSI risks. Nowadays, accurate and efficient short-term traffic flow forecasting plays a critical role in intelligent transportation systems (ITS). However, due to the fact that traffic flow is susceptible to factors such as weather and road conditions, traffic flow data tend to exhibit dynamic uncertainty and nonlinearity, making the construction of a robust and reliable forecasting model still a challenging task. Aiming at this nonlinear and complex traffic flow forecasting problem, this paper constructs a short-term traffic flow forecasting hybrid optimization model, SSA-ELM, based on extreme learning machine by embedding the sparrow search algorithm in order to solve the above problem. Extreme learning machine has been widely used in short-term traffic flow forecasting due to its characteristics such as low computational complexity and fast learning speed. By using the sparrow search algorithm to optimize the input weight values and hidden layer deviations in the extreme learning machine, the sparrow search algorithm is utilized to search for the global optimal solution while taking into account the original characteristics of the extreme learning machine, so that the model improves stability while increasing prediction accuracy. Experimental results on the Amsterdam A10 road traffic flow dataset show that the traffic flow forecasting model proposed in this paper has higher forecasting accuracy and stability, revealing the potential of hybrid optimization models in the field of short-term traffic flow forecasting. Forest biomass estimation is undoubtedly one of the most pressing research subjects at present. Combining multi-source remote sensing information can give full play to the advantages of different remote sensing technologies, providing more comprehensive and rich information for aboveground biomass (AGB) estimation research. Based on Landsat 8, Sentinel-2A, and ALOS2 PALSAR data, this paper takes the artificial coniferous forests in the Saihanba Forest of Hebei Province as the object of study, fully explores and establishes remote sensing factors and information related to forest structure, gives full play to the advantages of spectral signals in detecting the horizontal structure and multi-dimensional synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data in detecting the vertical structure, and combines environmental factors to carry out multivariate synergistic methods of estimating the AGB. This paper uses three variable selection methods (Pearson correlation coefficient, random forest significance, and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO)) to establish the variable sets, combining them with three typical non-parametric models to estimate AGB, namely, random forest (RF), support vector regression (SVR), and artificial neural network (ANN), to analyze the effect of forest structure on biomass estimation, explore the suitable AGB of artificial coniferous forests estimation of machine learning models, and develop the method of quantifying saturation value of the combined variables. The results show that the horizontal structure is more capable of explaining the AGB compared to the vertical structure information, and that combining the multi-structure information can improve the model results and the saturation value to a great extent. In this study, different sets of variables can produce relatively superior results in different models. The variable set selected using LASSO gives the best results in the SVR model, with an R 2 values of 0.9998 and 0.8792 for the training and the test set, respectively, and the highest saturation value obtained is 185.73 t/ha, which is beyond the range of the measured data. The problem of saturation in biomass estimation in boreal medium- and high-density forests was overcome to a certain extent, and the AGB of the Saihanba area was better estimated. Soil moisture (SM) is a key variable driving hydrologic, climatic, and ecological processes. Although it is highly variable, both spatially and temporally, there is limited data availability to inform about SM conditions at adequate spatial and temporal scales over large regions. Satellite SM retrievals, especially L-band microwave remote sensing, has emerged as a feasible solution to offer spatially continuous global-scale SM information. However, the coarse spatial resolution of these L-band microwave SM retrievals poses uncertainties in many regional- and local-scale SM applications which require a high amount of spatial details. Numerous studies have been conducted to develop downscaling algorithms to enhance the spatial resolution of coarse-resolution satellite-derived SM datasets. Machine Learning (ML)-based downscaling models have gained prominence recently due to their ability to capture non-linear, complex relationships between SM and its driving factors, such as vegetation, surface temperature, topography, and climatic conditions. This review paper presents a comprehensive review of the ML-based approaches used in SM downscaling. The usage of classical, ensemble, neural nets, and deep learning methods to downscale SM products and the comparison of multiple algorithms are detailed in this paper. Insights into the significance of surface ancillary variables for model accuracy and the improvements made to ML-based SM downscaling approaches are also discussed. This paper introduces a novel one-dimensional convolutional neural network that utilizes clinical data to accurately detect choledocholithiasis, where gallstones obstruct the common bile duct. Swift and precise detection of this condition is critical to preventing severe complications, such as biliary colic, jaundice, and pancreatitis. This cutting-edge model was rigorously compared with other machine learning methods commonly used in similar problems, such as logistic regression, linear discriminant analysis, and a state-of-the-art random forest, using a dataset derived from endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography scans performed at Olive View–University of California, Los Angeles Medical Center. The one-dimensional convolutional neural network model demonstrated exceptional performance, achieving 90.77% accuracy and 92.86% specificity, with an area under the curve of 0.9270. Creating accurate emission models capable of capturing the variability and dynamics of modern propulsion systems is crucial for future mobility planning. This paper presents a methodology for creating THC and NOx emission models for vehicles equipped with start–stop technology. A key aspect of this endeavor is to find techniques that accurately replicate the engine's stop stages when there are no emissions. To this end, several machine learning techniques were tested using the Python programming language. A Virtual Power Plant (VPP) is a centralized energy system that manages, and coordinates distributed energy resources, integrating them into a unified entity. While the physical assets may be dispersed across various locations, the VPP integrates them into a virtual unified entity capable of responding to grid demands and market signals. This paper presents a tri-level hierarchical coordinated operational framework of VPP. Firstly, an Improved Pelican Optimization Algorithm (IPOA) is introduced to optimally schedule Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) within the VPP, resulting in a significant reduction in generation costs. Comparative analysis against conventional algorithms such as Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) demonstrates IPOA's superior performance, achieving an average reduction of 8.5% in generation costs across various case studies. The second stage focuses on securing the optimized generation data from rising cyber threats, employing the capabilities of machine learning, preferably, a convolutional autoencoder to learn the normal patterns of the optimized data to detect deviations from the optimized generation data to prevent suboptimal decisions. The model exhibits exceptional performance in detecting manipulated data, with a False Positive Rate (FPR) of 1.92% and a Detection Accuracy (DA) of 98.06%, outperforming traditional detection techniques. Lastly, the paper delves into the dynamic nature of the day ahead market that the VPP participates in. In responding to the grid by selling its optimized generated power via the day-ahead market, the VPP employs the Prophet model, another machine learning technique to forecast the spot market price for the day-ahead to mitigate the adverse effects of price volatility. By utilizing Prophet forecasts, the VPP achieves an average revenue increase of 15.3% compared to scenarios without price prediction, emphasizing the critical role of predictive analytics in optimizing economic gains. To deal with the highly nonlinear and time-varying characteristics of Batch Process, a model named adaptive stacking approximate kernel based broad learning system is proposed in this paper. This model innovatively introduces the approximate kernel based broad learning system (AKBLS) algorithm and the Adaptive Stacking framework, giving it strong nonlinear fitting ability, excellent generalization ability, and adaptive ability. The Broad Learning System (BLS) is known for its shorter training time for effective nonlinear processing, but the uncertainty brought by its double random mapping results in poor resistance to noisy data and unpredictable impact on performance. To address this issue, this paper proposes an AKBLS algorithm that reduces uncertainty, eliminates redundant features, and improves prediction accuracy by projecting feature nodes into the kernel space. It also significantly reduces the computation time of the kernel matrix by searching for approximate kernels to enhance its ability in industrial online applications. Extensive comparative experiments on various public datasets of different sizes validate this. The Adaptive Stacking framework utilizes the Stacking ensemble learning method, which integrates predictions from multiple AKBLS models using a meta-learner to improve generalization. Additionally, by employing the moving window method—where a fixed-length window slides through the database over time—the model gains adaptive ability, allowing it to better respond to gradual changes in industrial Batch Process. Quantum machine learning (QML) has emerged as a promising domain offering significant computational advantages over classical counterparts. In recent times, researchers have directed their attention towards this field. The objective of this paper is to provide a thorough overview of the advancements in quantum machine learning, encompassing the state-of-the-art approaches. The machine learning field is itself quite diverse. Diversity of QML is broadened due to the respective roles the quantum information processing and machine learning play in it. The study focuses on analysing the predictive efficacy of deep learning models on time series data. After experimental evaluation, we have chosen deep learning models that have better performance on time series data. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of premature death and disability globally, leading to significant increases in healthcare costs and economic strains. Artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as a crucial technology in this context, promising to have a significant impact on the management of CVDs. A wide range of methods can be used to develop effective models for medical applications, encompassing everything from predicting and diagnosing diseases to determining the most suitable treatment for individual patients. This literature review synthesizes findings from multiple studies that apply AI technologies such as machine learning algorithms and neural networks to electrocardiograms, echocardiography, coronary angiography, computed tomography, and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging. A narrative review of 127 articles identified 31 papers that were directly relevant to the research, encompassing a broad spectrum of AI applications in cardiology. These applications included AI models for ECG, echocardiography, coronary angiography, computed tomography, and cardiac MRI aimed at diagnosing various cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, arrhythmias, pulmonary embolism, and valvulopathies. The papers also explored new methods for cardiovascular risk assessment, automated measurements, and optimizing treatment strategies, demonstrating the benefits of AI technologies in cardiology. The motors are critical components of the electromechanical transmission in vehicles, and its operating status directly affects the maneuverability of vehicles. To quickly and accurately identify the operating status of motors, this paper proposes a new entropy - Composite Multi-scale Weighted Reverse Slope Entropy (CMWRSlE) for motor fault diagnosis, which is a more interpretable entropy due to its deep exploration of signals. Firstly, the composite multi-scale weighted reverse slope entropy values are extracted from the vibration signals of the motor in different states; Secondly, the extracted features are dimensionally reduced by the manifold learning algorithm - Neighbourhood Preserving Embedding (NPE) and classified by the hierarchical prototype-based approach (HPA) to achieve the fault diagnosis of the motor. Finally, the method proposed in this paper is validated through two sets of experimental data: motor rotor faults and motor bearing faults. The paper focuses on two kinds of rotating machinery, miniature table drilling machine and automobile engine, as the research object. Traditional machine learning has the need for manual feature extraction, and is very dependent on expert diagnostic experience and expertise, but also has the disadvantages of low accuracy, low timeliness, low efficiency, etc. For the traditional rotating machinery fault diagnosis method is more based on the traditional machine learning model, this paper puts forward a one-dimensional convolutional neural network-based fault identification method. According to the characteristics of the miniature table drilling machine and the automobile engine which are not detachable, the corresponding faults are set up respectively, Vibration signals of the attitude sensor are obtained by using the signal collector, and the collected data are preprocessed, then the CNN model is built for fault identification, and the network structure is constantly optimized to obtain the optimal network model with high accuracy (up to 100 %) and robustness. The results show that the one-dimensional convolutional neural network model improves the fault recognition accuracy and reduces the cost compared with the traditional machine learning SVM model when the original signal is used as the input signal. This paper examines the paradoxical transparency involved in training machine-learning models. Existing literature typically critiques the opacity of machine-learning models such as neural networks or collaborative filtering, a type of critique that parallels the black-box critique in technology studies. Accordingly, people in power may leverage the models' opacity to justify a biased result without subjecting the technical operations to public scrutiny, in what Dan McQuillan metaphorically depicts as an "algorithmic state of exception". This paper attempts to differentiate the black-box abstraction that wraps around complex computational systems from the opacity of machine-learning models. It contends that the degree of asymmetry in knowledge is greater in the former than the latter. In the case of software systems, software codes are difficult to understand as only software experts with sufficient domain knowledge are equipped to formulate a sound critique. In contrast, the meanings of trained parameters in a machine-learning model are obscure even to the data scientists who configure and train the model. Hence, the asymmetry of knowledge lies only in how data examples are collected, the choice and configuration of machine-learning models, and the specification of features in model design. Under the trend of algorithmic decision-making proliferating with machine-learning heuristics, the paper contends that the more symmetric distribution of knowledge in machine learning could lead to a more transparent production process if proper policies are in place.
