The large number of dams in the world has caused many ecological problems, especially in ecologically fragile areas. Appropriate environmental flow (e-flows) releases reduce stress on river ecosystems caused by the flow alterations of dams. As e-flow releasing is substantially a decision-making process, it is important to choose the right calculation method in many e-flow assessment frameworks and calculation methods or to select the proper e-flow result from many scenarios. In China, there are government guidelines to assist managers in choosing an e-flow method for their situations, but the technical components of these guidelines are too general and not very specific, even though the coverage of the framework of guidelines is comparatively complete. Thus, a high degree of subjectivity remains in the method selection, and managers are often confused about the different e-flow results and scenarios. A more detailed decision support evaluation (DSE) model which can quantify and compare the results from different calculation methods is therefore needed to provide a basic technical economy evaluation. Based on the relevant policies and the dam priority classification frameworks in China, we propose a DSE model based on the matter element analysis (MEA) method to complement the Chinese e-flow framework. First, the flow regime criteria from the related government guidelines for a variety of conservation objectives are summarized. Secondly, different scenarios of e-flows are calculated based on the formal government guidelines and using the same hydrological database. Finally, the DSE model for assessing the different e-flow scenarios are built and demonstrated. MEA helped to quantify and optimize the different results and reduce the uncertainty. Policies for promoting sustainable development of dam projects in the world have always been an argument due to the negative impacts on ecosystems. How to improve the efficiency of identifying the impacts and main indicators in the environmental impact assessment (EIA) process and post environmental impact assessment (PEIA) process is a common topic. Since the rapid dam construction in the past decades, most dam projects in China have turned to operation period. In order to identify the main impacts and provide scientific bases for the decision-making process, we optimized and applied the decision-support prototype (DSP) toolkit on the cascade dam projects on the Yangtze River. Through the optimization of the module and tools, the modified DSP was more applicable for China's dams. Though the modified DSP cannot replace large-scale assessments for dam projects, it would assist the EIA and PEIA process by identifying the most relevant environmental concerns and knowledge gaps at early stages of negotiation, so that more attention can be focused on subsequent studies and evaluative processes. On the other hand, some new limitations were found in our practice. In response to the limitations, we propose several suggestions: (1) SBQ: to introduce a factor to balance the proportion evaluation result of new developed dams and existing dams in the study; (2) SBQ: to consider more about interactions between cascade dam projects and their impacts on different spatial scales; (3) EEM, extend the parameters for generating EEM from dams in areas outside of the U.S. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tebuconazole is an effective but potentially carcinogenic fungicide. Tebuconazole residues in loquat and sugarcane were investigated, together with an analysis of their dietary risk. Solid-phase extraction and high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry showed fortified recoveries of 87% to 98%, with standard deviations ≤ 6.4%. The tebuconazole residues were below 6.34 mg kg−1 for whole loquat and 0.80 mg kg−1 for sugarcane. Based on the final residue test, the chronic hazard index was 90.74% in whole loquat and sugarcane, while the acute hazard index ranged from 66.32% to 109.49% for loquat and 33.37% to 76.93% for sugarcane. The assessment of potential dietary risk showed that while loquats may represent an acute risk to human health, whereas sugarcane consumption was safe. A 21-day pre-harvest interval is proposed to comply with maximum residue limit regulations and the observed risks when using 430 g/L tebuconazole for treating sugarcane. • This study provides the prevalence estimates for meeting the World Health Organization muscle-strengthening exercise recommendations and examines correlates in a national sample of Chinese children and adolescents (9–17 years). • Approximately two-fifths of Chinese children and adolescents met the muscle-strengthening exercise recommendations. • Girls, 10th to 12th graders, minorities, and those with lower household income and lower parental education level were less likely to meet the muscle-strengthening exercise recommendations. • Proficiency in two or more sports, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, exercise intention, peer and parental support, and parental involvement in muscle-strengthening exercise were significantly associated with meeting the muscle-strengthening exercise recommendations. This study aimed to describe the national prevalence of Chinese children and adolescents who met the World Health Organization muscle-strengthening exercise (MSE) recommendations and identify correlates of meeting the MSE recommendations. Cross-sectional data from the 2019 Physical Activity and Fitness in China—The Youth Study, a nationally representative sample of Chinese children and adolescents (n = 80,413; mean age = 13.7 years; 53.9% girls) and their parents, were analyzed. Children and adolescents who reported engaging ≥3 days (up to 7 days) of MSE per week were classified as meeting the MSE recommendations. MSE, demographics, lifestyle behaviors (sport participation, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity, screen time, and sleep duration), exercise intention, peer and parental support, and parental MSE participation were assessed through self-reports. Logistic regression models were used to determine the correlates of meeting the MSE recommendations. The analyses were completed in 2020. Overall, 39.3% of children and adolescents met the MSE recommendations. Girls, 10th–12th graders, minorities, those from lower income households and those from families with lower parental education were less likely to meet the MSE recommendations. Children and adolescents who were proficient in ≥2 sports were more likely to meet the MSE recommendations (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 1.44, 95% confidence interval (95%CI): 1.26–1.65), as were those with more moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (aOR = 1.57, 95%CI: 1.53–1.61). Additionally, children and adolescents with high exercise intention (aOR = 1.60, 95%CI: 1.51–1.69), those whose parents met the adult MSE recommendations (aOR = 1.46, 95%CI: 1.40–1.52), and those who received high peer (aOR = 1.27, 95%CI: 1.20–1.34) and parental support (aOR = 1.07, 95%CI: 1.04–1.12) were more likely to meet the MSE recommendations. Less than two-fifths of Chinese children and adolescents met the World Health Organization MSE recommendations. The correlates identified in our study can help inform the development of school and community based strategies and policies to enhance participation in MSE and improve muscular fitness of all Chinese children and adolescents. Purpose: Based on the theorized concept "Curriculum Safety Zone (CSZ)," this study was conducted to identify the factors for breaking CSZ by contrasting the experiential accounts of two pre-service teacher groups who taught within or outside of their CSZ. Method: Pre-service teachers (n = 14) from a sport-centered PETE program were trained to teach a Health-First curriculum module and their peers (n = 14) a traditional sport module. Each group taught their respective module to 14 intact 7th grade classes in 14 schools in China. A mixed-methods design was used. Quantitative data on learner knowledge gain were collected from the learners. Qualitative data included lesson observation fieldnotes, social-media posts, and interview responses and were gathered from the pre-service teachers. Results: Learners in the Health-First schools gained more knowledge than those in the Comparison schools (t26 = 2.92, p =.007, Cohen's d = 1.10). Qualitative evidence was triangulated using a Health-First vs. Comparison contrasting approach with open-, axial-, and selective-coding to generate themes. The themes were Confidence in Doubt, Lesson Plans to the Rescue, Professional Development is Necessary But..., and Student Learning Save the Day! A grounded theory was developed using the themes and interpreted using the Interconnection Model of Teacher Professional Growth. Conclusion: Breaking CSZ requires a synergistic effort with carefully designed professional development, detailed lesson plans, an effective support network, and, most important of all, a powerful curriculum that can elicit observable and measurable learner achievement. Changes in land use and landscapes have a direct impact on the regional eco-environment. It is of great importance to understand the change pattern of land use, landscapes, and their mechanism on the ecological quality, especially ecologically fragile areas. The northern sand-prevention belt (NSPB) is an important ecologically fragile area in China, which has a large influence on the ecological security of the entire country. Based on the land use data of the NSPB in 2000, 2010, and 2018, we studied the spatio-temporal characteristics of land-use change and change in landscape patterns. The ecological quality represented by the remote sensing-based desertification index (RSDI) was calculated using satellite images. The effects of land use and landscape patterns on RSDI were analyzed by geographic detector and geographically weighted regression. Important results include the following: (1) Land-use change in the study area was high during 2000–2010 but slower in 2010–2018. Grassland was the largest land-use type in the NSPB, and varied greatly in terms of total change and spatial location. The major change was the conversion between dense and moderate grass, with 64,860 km2 of dense grass turning into moderate grass, and 48,505 km2 changing the other way. (2) Among the four landscape metrics, patch density, area-weighted mean fractal dimension, and edge density increased, whereas the aggregation index decreased, which indicated that the landscape was developing towards heterogeneity, fragmentation, complexity, and aggregation. Spatially, the landscape metrics presented a strip distribution in the east of the NSPB. (3) The effects of various land-use types on ecological quality, from high to low, were unused land, woodland, dense grass, cropland, moderate grass, built-up land, sparse grass, and waterbody. The areas where the ecological quality was greatly affected by the landscape patterns were concentrated in the agro-pastoral ecotone and the forest-steppe ecotone. Temperature and precipitation are considered to be the most important indicators affecting the green-up date. Sensitivity of the green-up date to temperature and precipitation is considered to be one of the key indicators to characterize the response of terrestrial ecosystems to climate change. We selected the main grassland types for analysis, including temperate steppe, temperate meadow steppe, upland meadow, and lowland meadow. This study investigates the variation in key meteorological indicators (daily maximum temperature (Tmax), daily minimum temperature (Tmin), and precipitation) between 2001 and 2018. We then examined the partial correlation and sensitivity of green-up date (GUD) to Tmax, Tmin, and precipitation. Our analysis indicated that the average GUD across the whole area was DOY 113. The mean GUD trend was −3.1 days/decade and the 25% region advanced significantly. Tmax and Tmin mainly showed a decreasing trend in winter (p > 0.05). In spring, Tmax mainly showed an increasing trend (p > 0.05) and Tmin a decreasing trend (p > 0.05). Precipitation showed no significant (p > 0.05) change trend and the trend range was ±10 mm/decade. For temperate steppe, the increase in Tmin in March promotes green-up (27.3%, the proportion of significant pixels), with a sensitivity of −0.17 days/°C. In addition, precipitation in April also promotes green-up (21.7%), with a sensitivity of −0.32 days/mm. The GUDs of temperate meadow steppe (73.9%), lowland meadow (65.9%), and upland meadow (22.1%) were mainly affected by Tmin in March, with sensitivities of −0.15 days/°C, −0.13 days/°C, and −0.14 days/°C, respectively. The results of this study reveal the response of vegetation to climate warming and contribute to improving the prediction of ecological changes as temperatures increase in the future. • The RSDI is suitable for monitoring aeolian desertification. • The areas with significant restoration (34.1%) exceeded those with significant deterioration (6%) in the NSPB. • In the areas with significant restoration, 57.4% of the land was mainly affected by human activities. The northern sand-prevention belt (NSPB) is the key area for sand control in China, and the various ecological projects conducted there are important to the Chinese strategy for ecological security. In this paper, a new remote sensing-based desertification index (RSDI) based on principal component analysis was constructed from four aspects of vegetation greenness, surface moisture, soil grain size, and surface radiation. The overall evaluation accuracy of the index was 89.2%, and the kappa coefficient was 0.80, indicating high sensitivity to different degrees of aeolian desertification and suitability for multiscale research. The coefficient of variation, Mann–Kendall test, Theil–Sen median trend analysis, and residual analysis were used to analyze the spatiotemporal changes and driving forces of the RSDI in the NSPB from 2000 to 2020. The RSDI was used to compare aeolian desertification in different subregions, land use types, and ecological project areas. The important results are as follows: (1) the trend of the average RSDI was downward, but it increased significantly in 2008–2009 and 2013–2014; (2) the RSDI was characterized by relatively high volatility in 28.9% and moderate volatility in 27.1% of the area; (3) the areas with significant restoration (34.1%) greatly exceeded those with significant deterioration (6%), whereas 59.9% of the total area was stable; and (4) within the area with significant restoration, 57.4% was primarily affected by human activities, and 42.4% was primarily affected by climate change; however, most of the area with significant deterioration (71.1%) was affected by human activities. In general, the degree of aeolian desertification in the NSPB has decreased in the past 20 years and its ecological quality has continued to recover. [Display omitted] • A selection strategy for base-period images of spatio-temporal fusion was proposed. • The spatio-temporal inconsistency between field samples and images was reduced. • The estimation accuracy of grassland aboveground biomass was improved. The accurate estimation of the aboveground biomass (AGB) is crucial for the sustainable utilization and management of grassland resources. Spatio-temporal inconsistencies between field samples and satellite images are major source of error in the estimation of grassland AGB. To solve this problem, this study selected the Three Rivers Headwater Region as the study area and proposed a selection strategy for base-period images of spatio-temporal fusion that was suitable for use at a large spatial scale in which cloud-free images are difficult to obtain. The spatial and temporal adaptive reflectance fusion model (STARFM) based on the selection strategy was used to generate a synthetic Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) dataset with high spatial-temporal resolution by using the maximum value composite of GF-1 NDVI and MODIS NDVI to enhance the spatial-temporal quality of the images for field-scale application. Three estimation models for grassland AGB were then constructed by the random forest algorithm using synthetic NDVI, MODIS NDVI, GF-1 NDVI respectively, together with ancillary data. Following this, the estimation model with the highest accuracy was used to generate a 16-m eight-day time-series AGB in the growing season. The results showed: (1) The synthetic NDVI was correlated closely with the observed GF-1 NDVI, with an average R of 0.825 and a RMSE of 0.087. The temporal trend of the synthetic NDVI for each grassland type was highly consistent with that of the MODIS NDVI in the growing season with a correlation higher than 0.9. (2) The synthetic NDVI reduced the spatial difference between field samples and images to 16-fold, and the temporal difference was controlled to within four days under ideal conditions. (3) The synthetic NDVI improved the estimation accuracy of grassland AGB by about 15.9% and 19.7% (R2), and 13.7% and 17.5% (RMSE) relative to MODIS NDVI and GF-1 NDVI, respectively. (4) The time-series AGB revealed accurately the spatial distribution of and seasonal temporal variations in the grassland biomass. Dissipation, residues and risk assessment of lufenuron during kumquat growing and kumquat processing were investigated under field and household conditions. The QuEChERS technique with high-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS) was used to detect lufenuron residues content in kumquats and its processed products. The recoveries were 82.3–102.8% at a spike level of 0.005–0.5 mg kg−1, the relative standard deviations (RSDs) were 1.1–9.4%. The dissipation kinetics data showed that lufenuron in kumquats were degraded with the half-lives of 9.12–12.60 days. The terminal residues of lufenuron in kumquats were 0.064–0.107 mg kg−1 after application one times with a pre-harvest interval (PHI) of 14 days under the designed dosages. The juicing process can significantly reduce the residues of lufenuron in kumquats juice, and the processing factor (PF) value of juicing process was 0.15. The chronic dietary exposure assessment risk quotient (RQ) values of lufenuron in kumquats fruit and juice for different consumers were 0.71–2.13% and 0.37–0.86%, all of the RQ values were lower than 100%.
