A new Mg-4Zn X Ti-6Al-4V (TC4, of 0, 1, and 3 wt.%) alloy was successfully fabricated by a simple and low-cost gravity casting method and heat treatment at 150 °C for 24 h. The composite was examined by XRD, uniaxial tests, FESEM/EDS, potentiostat/EIS, and immersion tests for the material's microstructures, mechanical properties, electrochemical characteristics, and corrosion resistance. Experimental results indicate that heat treatment enables the precipitation of Zn along the Mg grain boundaries and drives the co-precipitation of Al around the TC4 particles and nearby grain boundaries. Uniaxial tensile tests reveal that TC4 reinforces the Mg-Zn matrix material with higher elastic modulus, ultimate tensile stress, and toughness. The heat treatment further enhanced these mechanical properties. Electrochemical tests show that 1 wt.% TC4 composite exhibits the highest open circuit potential among all tested samples, which implies the 1 wt.% TC4-added Mg-Zn is better resistant to the oxidation of the essential metals Mg, Zn, and Al. The immersion tests in the HBSS solution further show that the 1 wt.% TC4 composite has the lowest rise of pH values after 14 days, and EDS for the corroded surface signifies that Mg is the main element vulnerable to oxidation by corrosion. This study investigates the effects of incorporating MgO into magnesium–calcium (Mg-Ca) alloy composites and subjecting them to the equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) process on the resulting mechanical and corrosive properties, as well as biocompatibility. Initially, the incorporation of MgO into the Mg-Ca alloy composites did not yield significant improvements in grain refinement, tensile strength, or corrosion rate reduction, despite exhibiting improved biocompatibility. However, upon subjecting the Mg-Ca-MgO alloy composites to the ECAP process, noteworthy outcomes were observed. The ECAP process resulted in substantial grain refinement, leading to significant improvements in tensile strength. Furthermore, a marked decrease in corrosion rate was observed, indicating enhanced corrosion resistance. Additionally, the biocompatibility of the Mg-Ca-MgO alloy composites improved after undergoing the ECAP process. These findings highlight the synergistic effect of incorporating MgO and employing the ECAP process, providing valuable insights into the development of advanced magnesium-based materials with superior mechanical properties, reduced corrosion rates, and improved biocompatibility. The automobile industry uses magnesium for load-bearing components due to its low density, durability, and ductility. This study investigated a nanocomposite containing Nb2O5 (3 and 6 wt%) nanoparticles as reinforcement with AZ31 magnesium alloy made by stir casting. A severe plastic deformation was conducted on the cast samples via equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) after homogenization at 410 °C for 24 h and aging at 200 °C for 10 h. The microstructural distributions and mechanical properties of the magnesium metal matrix composites (MMCs) reinforced with Nb2O5 nanoparticles were investigated via ECAP. With the increase in the number of ECAP passes, the grain sizes became uniform, and the size of secondary phases reduced in the pure Nb2O5/AZ31 MMC. The grain size decreased remarkably after the ECAP process from 31.95 µm to 18.41µm due to the dynamic recrystallization during plastic deformation. The mechanical properties of hardness, ultimate tensile strength, and elongation effectively improved after each ECAP pass. The maximum values achieved for the Nb2O5/AZ31 composite subjected to ECAP were 64.12 ± 12 HV, 151.2 MPa, and 52.71%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

There have been remarkable improvements in the research field of magnesium over the last few decades, especially in the magnesium metal matrix composite in which micro and nanoparticles are used as reinforcement. The dispersion phase of nanoparticles shows a better microstructural morphology than pure magnesium. The magnesium metal matrix nanocomposite shows improved strength with a balance of plasticity as compared to the traditional magnesium metal matrix composite. In this research, Nb2O5 (0 wt.%, 3 wt.%, and 6 wt.%) nanoparticles were used to reinforce AZ31 with the stir casting method, followed by heat treatment, and finally, an investigation was conducted using microstructural analysis. Factors such as the degree of crystallinity, crystallite size, and dislocation density are affected by the concentration of Nb2O5 and heat treatment. With the compositional increase in Nb2O5 weight percentage, the grain size decreases up to 3% Nb2O5 and then increases gradually. The SEM image analysis showed a grain size reduction of up to 3% Nb2O5 and fracture morphology changed from basal slip to a mixture of basal slip and adiabatic shear band. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research aimed to explore the combined effects of graphene (Gr) and copper (Cu) in a magnesium metal composite (MMC) on its microstructure, biocompatibility, electrochemical, and immersion corrosion behaviors. The MMCs were prepared using the mechanical stir-casting method. Alloys with a preset weight percentage of Gr (0.15 wt.%) and various weight percentages of Cu (0.5 and 1 wt.%) were produced with pure Mg as the matrix. This study demonstrates that Gr and Cu enhance crystallinity and increase grain size in composite materials. The introduction of Gr into the magnesium matrix alone elevates the corrosion rate. However, there was a further addition of 0.5 wt.% Cu (0.5Cu) showed a slight reduction in grain size growth and corrosion rate. The addition of more copper (1 wt.% Cu (1Cu)) increases both grain size and the corrosion rate again. Cytotoxicity test results indicate that Gr and Cu enhance the cell viability of 3T3 fibroblasts in vitro. These findings shed light on the intricate interplay between Gr and Cu in the microstructure and corrosion resistance of Mg-based composites and inspire confidence in developing magnesium metal composites for clinical applications. In this study, the AZ31 magnesium alloy was reinforced with tungsten disulfide (WS2) nanotubes to fabricate the nanocomposite using the stir casting method. The microstructural analysis, mechanical and wear behaviors were investigated with the effect of WS2 on the AZ31 alloy. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to conduct the microstructural analysis. The microstructures are revealed to incorporate the aluminum content with the WS2 nanotube, disclose the presence of the secondary phase, which was increased compared with the AZ31 alloy and was detected by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). The mechanical properties of hardness and yield strength (YS) were significantly improved with the addition of WS2 nanotubes. This is mainly due to the strengthening mechanisms of Orowan, the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) mismatch and the load transfer mechanism. The theoretical YS was calculated and compared with the experimental results. However, the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and the fracture strain were decreased with the addition of reinforcement which might be owing to the clustering of nanotubes. Finally, the wear behavior of the wear weight loss and depth of cut was investigated. This test revealed that the addition of WS2 nanotubes reduced the weight loss and depth of the material cutting that was mainly due to the presence of hard WS2 nanotubes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
