This paper advocates for a reading of John Scottus Eriugena's Carmina that situates his collection of poems within the genre of devotional poetry. Although the Carmina has recently benefited from scholarship on Eriugena's theology, typologies of his poems consistently overlook the significance of their theological themes. Most instead attribute more significance to their political themes, since Charles the Bald commissioned many of Eriugena's poems for special occasions at his royal court. This paper argues that a textual analysis which compares the significance of theological and political themes in the Carmina reveals several reasons why Eriugena's poems should be read as devotional poetry. First, it explains how typologies of Eriugena's poems overlook the significance of their theological themes by overstating the significance of Charles and his royal court. Then, it offers a close reading of three poems in the Carmina to show how Eriugena uses theological themes to frame political ones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ecocriticism is a field that is inherently cross-cultural, and poetry is an art form that creates bonds across cultural communities. This paper focuses on Gary Snyder, a prominent poet in his own right, who is famous for his translation of the works by Chinese poet Han Shan. His attraction to Chinese classical poetry and Eastern civilization offers an alternative to the Western developmental paradigm, and the ecopoetry he espouses is pertinent to today's environmental debates. His references to nature do not function merely as reminders that nature should be respected but as an impetus to reflect on the coexistence of multiple temporalities and agencies. This paper examines Chinese poetry's inspirational effect on Snyder and analyzes his translations of Han Shan's poetry. Snyder's ecocritical insights have had a wide influence, particularly on the work of Hong Kong poet Xi Xi. This circulation of poetry offers a means of bridging Western and Eastern cultures. The mutual enrichment achieved by such cultural translations provides a means of transcending the simplistic dichotomies of the East and West. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Synesthesia, among other rhetorical devices, has played a prominent role in conveying the intended messages in the realm of poetry. Nonetheless, it has not grabbed adequate attention to its nature and function. Belonging to the domain of comparative literature, this essay has benefitted from analogy studies as its methodology to render novel perspectives in the meaning and reading of the poetry of Sitwell and Ebtehaj. Here, we have attempted, firstly, to foreground the function of synesthesia and, secondly, to enrich the understanding of the mentioned poets. This paper concludes that the realization of synesthesia heavily and helpfully affects the perception of literary poems. In addition, to showcase such influence, a reasonable number of poems by Sitwell and Ebtehaj were subjected to scrutiny, indicating that a great deal of their poetry is best understood only after investigating synesthesia. This article reads Love Again (1992), the last poem written by contemporary Palestinian poet Walid Saif based on Heidegger's concept of the Dasein as detailed in Being and Time and his concept of art as detailed in "The Origin of the Work of Art" as well as in other of his works. In Love Again "togetherness," which is the essence of the Dasein, dissolves completely into the kind of being of "the Others". Heidegger's definition of "the truth of being" has the tendency of combining two contesting groups of theories: the first is a modernist group that advocates an intrinsic/textual approach to read literary texts in light of new criticism and other formalist schools. The second is a group that advocates a contextual/extrinsic/political approach to read literary texts like new historicism, postcolonialism and others. A Heideggerian reading of Saif's poem debunks the modernist claim that a detachable aesthetic experience can safeguard the poem's "historical permanence" and transcend its political context. Unlike formalists of his time, Heidegger was not concerned with the tension that emerged between the above two groups since he took both the extrinsic and intrinsic elements of a literary work as indispensable elements towards exploring the literary work. This semester-long study attempted to investigate 122 (M: 21; F: 101) Taiwanese undergraduates' responses to bibliotherapy and two textbooks in an Advanced English Reading classroom. Data collection included an anonymous 6-point Likert scaled questionnaire with a space for free comments and the students' reflection papers to show their perceptions. The results of the study showed that bibliotherapy effectively helped the students (a) understand the importance of self-knowledge, life growth, emotion management, positive thinking, and behavior awareness, (b) understand the importance of (literature) reading, (literature) reading course, and the benefits of (literature) reading, and (c) enhance self-understanding, positive thinking, mental growth, and (positive) behavioral change. Moreover, the study found that the two textbooks could effectively boost the students' bibliotherapeutic energy, including their positive thinking ability, mental growth, and mature behavior. This paper attempts an analysis of Coleridge’s Christabel, focusing exclusively on the character of Christabel. Further, the analysis is Jungian in nature which investigates the persona and shadow aspects of the personality of the said character revealed in the text through the sexual deeds, gestures and thoughts. In addition, I confine myself to the analysis of part I of the poem only. For the purpose, as theoretical background, a brief overview of the Jungian theoretical apparatus is given. The analysis shows that, within the poem’s text, sex and sexuality prove significant both as trigger for and indicator of the shadow/persona dichotomy in the character. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article is an ecocritical study of three of T. S. Eliot's most notable works: "The Waste Land", "The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock", and "The Hollow Men". The poems are analyzed in detail and in relation with one another to highlight Eliot's understanding of man's relationship with nature through an elemental, ecomythical, and ecoreligious study. The article pursues a pattern in Eliot's writing of a Man-Nature relationship as it focuses on the ways in which nature interacts with and influences man's life, emotions, and faith. There is a growing research interest in the value of participative arts-based strategies for enhancing wellbeing amongst adults living with dementia. One such intervention, centred around literature, is the group activity called Shared Reading. The purpose of this case study of weekly Shared Reading sessions of poetry in a care home in Merseyside is to investigate instances of how participants with mild to moderate dementia collaborate in processes of meaning-making that allow them shared experiences of being moved by poetry. An under-thematised aspect of psychological wellbeing is the capacity for being moved and for sharing such moments. This article addresses the following question: how can the specific multimodality of the text (participants have a copy of the text before them, the poem is read aloud and there may be use of non-verbal aids) in the Shared Reading model help to bring about such experiences? Using Stern's concepts of Now Moments and Moments of Meeting, this case study discusses various instances of unpredictable, surprising and spontaneous intersubjective moments between participant and poem, participant and reader leader, participant and staff, participant and relative. Although perlocution has received more interest lately, it remains the great unthought of Austin's theory. The privilege he gives to illocution over perlocution, rather than being a necessity of his linguistic theory, is a contestable philosophical claim that leads him, I argue, to exclude from his consideration poetic and other 'parasitical' uses of language. Cavell's reconceptualisation of perlocutions as 'passionate utterances', however, provides a more fruitful theoretical framework to approach poetic phenomena. Julian Peters is a comic book artist and illustrator living in Montreal, Canada. In the last few years, he has focused on adapting classic works of English, French and Italian literature into comics. His works have been featured in anthologies, magazines, and school textbooks. Poems to See by: A Comic Artist Interprets Great Poetry (2020) is his recently published book featuring comics adaptation of 24 classic poems. His adaptations of poems by Arthur Rimbaud and François Villon were included in The Graphic Canon (Seven Stories Press, 2012), and his adaptation of T. S. Eliot's 'The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock' was featured in Slate Magazine. In spring 2015, he was 'Cartoonist in Residence' at Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. Julian holds a master's degree in Art History from Concordia University and takes his creative inspiration from the great and minor masters of all artistic periods. Amid a period of isolation and profound internal conflict, both in his life and in his thought, arises that which, according to Hölderlin, is "the general conflict in the human being", namely the conflict between the "aspiration to limitation" and "the aspiration to the absolute". The aim of this article is to analyze and, as much as possible, follow to its fullest extent, this fundamental thought: to see how it molds Hölderlin's positions on existence and philosophy, how it meets the most poignant philosophical concerns of the time and hence directly influences Hölderlin's reading of Fichte, and how it leads the young poet to the notion of an infinite progression of philosophy, that is, to an infinite approximation to the ideal of knowledge. Canon, tradition, and origin anchor developmental accounts of Black literary history, describing the forward movement from a singular beginning in terms of birth, maturation, and inheritance. This model delimits a specialized field of study, but also obscures texts, practices, and archives that do not cohere with it. In the study of slave testimony, the canonization of Anglo-American poets like Phillis Wheatley and Jupiter Hammon has eclipsed the reception and translation of other enslaved poets across the Americas. This essay proposes a method of lateral reading to remedy this lopsided historiography. First, it tracks how conceptions of "American Negro Poetry" shifted throughout the twentieth century, from initially describing a multilingual, hemispheric network of Black writers to ultimately signifying an Anglophone, nationally bounded African American canon. Second, it considers the temporalities of lyric, which move outward rather than forward in time, to suggest how we might read enslaved poets without expecting that their works reflect the "experience" of enslavement. And third, it demonstrates how a cohort of enslaved Afro-Cuban poets together established and elaborated a "writing community" through lyric form, overlapping social networks, and shared participation in an urban periodical culture. Taken together, these insights enable us to glimpse a wider, hemispheric corpus of enslaved poetics in the Americas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article, as part of ongoing research, is a theoretical account of the workings of affect and affectivity in the process of reading poetry, closing with an illustrative reading. It takes heed of the criticism of the terminology employed in affect studies and the employability of affect in critical discourse as an operative category. The study shows that the difficulty in the applicability of affect in discursive situations lies in its nature – in its being at once experienceable, yet impalpable. As a consequence, the article proposes the need to relocate the perspective within the reading for affect as an empty term and foregrounds the ways in which concentrating on Deleuzian sensation and sense, rather than affect alone, allows it to become operative.
