To achieve the energy efficiency standards in the National Construction Code, houses generally need to use insulation and weather sealing. However, if poorly installed this can lead to houses that have lower energy efficiency performance than expected. There has been little data collected on newly built houses to quantify air-tightness and assess the quality of insulation. This paper reports on a study that investigated new house construction around Australia to gain insight into the quality of house construction with regard to air-tightness and quality of insulation. Twenty houses in each capital city, except Darwin, were recruited for the project. The houses in most cities were up to 3 years old and assumed to be at the 6 star NatHERS standard. Blower door testing was carried out on 125 of the volunteer homes and the resulting air changes per hour at 50 Pascals pressure (ACH@50 Pa) for each house was then determined. In addition, an inspection of each house was undertaken by a qualified energy assessor to assess the quality of the insulation installed. A thermal inspection of the walls and ceiling was undertaken as well as a visual inspection of the ceiling insulation (if accessible). Weather sealing around windows and doors was also inspected for any gaps and damage. A broad range of results was achieved and found that well sealed houses are being constructed, but equally poorly performing houses are also still being built. Australian cities are experiencing more heat stress in the 21 st century than ever before. Public life in a majority of Australian cities suffer from heat stress in urban heat islands. This paper presents the concept of spatial heat resilience as the capability of the built environment to support outdoor activities during heat stress conditions. Outdoor activities and urban microclimate parameters were observed in selected public spaces of Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. Outdoor neutral and critical thermal thresholds are determined. An indexing system to indicate spatial heat resilience is presented. Correlations between spatial heat resilience and urban surface covers, and potential applications in low carbon cities are discussed. Results indicate that outdoor activities decrease after the neutral thermal threshold of 28-32 °C. Critical zero-activity situations can occur in the range of 30-48 °C. Particularly public spaces with more tree canopy and natural landscapes have more resilience to heat stress. Heat mitigation during summer results in increased outdoor living. By 2031 the population of NSW is expected to increase by 2 million. Almost 80% of growth will occur within the Sydney metropolitan area. This will place increased pressure on our transport infrastructure as customer demands for an effective and integrated transport system in and around Sydney grows. The context for our unprecedented program of infrastructure build is clearly set. So too, is the imperative to develop our asset base responsibly to ensure we establish and maintain a legacy network that can serve the City and the State for generations to come - ensuring Sydney continues to be a great place to live, work and do business. The imperative to work smarter, to learn and to harness and deploy the knowledge and experience gained across the globe to our projects and our assets is set. The Asset Standards Authority was created as part of the reform of the metropolitan rail system and has evolved to become a primary assurance vehicle providing technical and governance expertise and advice across Transport for NSW (TfNSW) as well as providing linkages to and access for industry. With a clear focus on ‘whole of life’ multi-mode transport infrastructure, the asset standards authority has led an unprecedented program of engagement centred on competency and capability development across the supply chain. In concert with this, the authority has developed focused relationships with global academia and R&D entities - providing the ‘asset-owners’ perspective and drawing on the considerable intellect that the relationship offers. The paper will describe the early evolution of the ASA's role as an enabler of asset-focused concepts and knowledge, innovation and R&D as part of a broader Industry Engagement task. It will draw on our experiences to date including industry acceptance and readiness and provide insight into our future direction geared towards incorporating the ‘knowledge business’ as BAU. Tackling the overconsumption of discretionary foods (foods and drinks not necessary to provide the nutrients the body needs) is central to aligning human and planetary health. Whilst the adverse health impacts of discretionary foods are well documented, the environmental and broader sustainability impacts of these products deserve more attention, especially since their consumption has been increasing in recent decades, particularly amongst low income groups. This paper presents a quantitative case study analysis of discretionary food consumption and the associated environmental impacts for households from different income groups in Australia. Environmentally extended input-output analysis is used to estimate the full life cycle environmental impacts of discretionary food consumption on the basis of household expenditures. On average, discretionary foods account for a significant 35%, 39%, 33% and 35% of the overall diet-related life cycle water use, energy use, carbon dioxide equivalent and land use respectively. These significant percentages provide further support for the need to incentivise diets that are both healthier and more sustainable, including ‘divestment’ from discretionary food products. The study highlights the challenges ahead, including the need for further research on food substitutions to minimise environmental and social impacts whilst maximising nutritional quality – especially amongst poorer socioeconomic groups. This paper assesses the accuracy of 11 existing runup models against field data collected under moderate wave conditions from 11 non-truncated beaches in New South Wales and Queensland, Australia. Beach types spanned the full range of intermediate beach types from low tide terrace to longshore bar and trough. Model predictions for both the 2% runup exceedance ( R 2% ) and maximum runup ( R max ) were highly variable between models, with predictions shown to vary by a factor of 1.5 for the same incident wave conditions. No single model provided the best predictions on all beaches in the dataset. Overall, model root mean square errors are of the order of 25% of the R 2% value. Models for R 2 % derived from field data were shown to be more accurate for predicting runup in the field than those developed from laboratory data, which overestimate the field data significantly. The most accurate existing models for predicting R 2% were those developed by Holman [12] and Vousdoukas et al. [40], with mean RMSE errors of 0.30 m or 25%. A new model-of-models for R 2% was developed from a best fit to the predictions from six existing field and one large scale laboratory R 2% data-derived models. It uses the Hunt [17] scaling parameter tan β H o L o and incorporates a setup parameterisation. This model is shown to be as accurate as the Holman and Vousdoukas et al. models across all tidal stages. It also yielded the smallest maximum error across the dataset. The most accurate predictions for R max were given by Hunt [17] but this tended to under predict the observed maximum runup obtained for 15-min records. Mase's [22] model has larger errors but yielded more conservative estimates. Greater observed values of R max are expected with increased record length, leading to greater differences in predicted values. Given the large variation in predictions across all models, however, it is clear that predictions by uncalibrated runup models on a given beach may be prone to significant error and this should be considered when using such models for coastal management purposes. It should be noted that in extreme events, which are lacking in the dataset, runup may be truncated by beach scarps, cliffs, and dunes, or may overtop, and as a result, the probability density functions will have different tail shapes. Modern power systems are experiencing the challenge of high uncertainty with the increasing penetration of renewable energy resources and the electrification of heating systems. In this paradigm shift, understanding electricity users' demand is of utmost value to the retailers, aggregators, and policymakers. However, behind-the-meter (BTM) equipment and appliances at the household level are unknown to the other stakeholders mainly due to privacy concerns and tight regulations. In this paper, we seek to identify residential consumers based on their BTM equipment, mainly rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems and electric heating, using imported/purchased energy data from utility meters. To solve this problem with an interpretable, fast, secure, and maintainable solution, we propose an integrated method called Interpretable Refined Motifs And binary Classification (IRMAC). The proposed method comprises a novel shape-based pattern extraction technique, called Refined Motif (RM) discovery, and a single-neuron classifier. The first part extracts a sub-pattern from the long time series considering the frequency of occurrences, average dissimilarity, and time dynamics while emphasising specific times with annotated distances. The second part identifies users' types with linear complexity while preserving the transparency of the algorithms. With the real data from Australia and Denmark, the proposed method is tested and verified in identifying PV owners and electrical heating system users. The performance of the IRMAC is studied and compared with various state-of-the-art methods. The proposed method reached an accuracy of 96% in identifying rooftop PV users and 94.4% in identifying electric heating users, which is comparable to the best solution based on deep learning, while the speed of the inference model is a thousand times faster. Last but not least, the proposed method is a transparent algorithm, which can tackle the concerns regarding the agnostic decision-making process when policies prohibit some machine learning methods. Managing constrained healthcare resources is an important and inescapable role of healthcare decision makers. Allocative decisions are based on downstream consequences of changes to care processes: judging whether the costs involved are offset by the magnitude of the consequences, and therefore whether the change represents value for money. Process mining techniques can inform such decisions by quantitatively discovering, comparing and detailing care processes using recorded data, however the scope of techniques typically excludes anything 'after-the-process' i.e., their accumulated costs and resulting consequences. Cost considerations are increasingly incorporated into process mining techniques, but the majority of healthcare costs for service and overhead components are commonly apportioned and recorded at the patient (trace) level, hiding event level detail. Within decision-analysis, event-driven and individual-level simulation models are sometimes used to forecast the expected downstream consequences of process changes, but are expensive to manually operationalise. In this paper, we address both of these gaps within and between process mining and decision analytics, by better linking them together. In particular, we introduce a new type of process model containing trace data that can be used in individual-level or cohort-level decision-analytical model building. Furthermore, we enhance these models with process-based micro-costing estimations. This paper critically reflects on a trial process for building the capacity of researchers to influence policy-makers in the urban water sector in Australia. Framed as an action research inquiry, this study brought together multidisciplinary teams of researchers to make policy pitches to simulated panels of current and former politicians, senior bureaucrats and industry representatives. The simulations were analysed with respect to tactics for pitching, methods of communication, use of evidence and participants’ reflections on the experience. Participants effectively used scientific research evidence to support a broad vision of water sensitive cities, but were less effective in articulating risk analyses, assessing economic impacts, and proposing appropriate policy instruments to enable their proposed visions to be operationalised. Dramaturgical analysis highlighted the implications of positioning scientists versus policy-makers, which ‘typecast’ participants in roles that restricted scientists’ ability to credibly argue policy ideas. It is proposed that teams of scientists and policy-makers ‘rehearse’ together to manage expectations, develop arguments that will cut through in policy contexts, and produce ideas that shape and are shaped and improved by the policy context. In this paper we use a form of discourse analysis to explore the ‘activity’ that three quite different sustainability reports set up as companies communicate their social and environmental performance. Our aim is to show what sustainability reports ‘do’ – in order to offer insights about what they ‘could do’. We show that the companies are using sustainability reporting strategically, and that sustainability is embedded in to the company's strategic priorities. Where they mostly narrate and argue a point of view, sustainability reporting can offer additional benefits by transiting towards dialogue. Dialogue provides stakeholders with the means to engage substantially with companies, and also introduce new discourses that may open up new directions in how companies contribute to sustainability. In Australia and abroad screw-fixed, thin, high strength, profiled steel roof cladding systems are widely used on low rise industrial, commercial and residential buildings. Under extreme wind conditions, such as those produced by cyclones, these systems can fail as a result of low cycle metal fatigue. Current design of such systems is based entirely on standardised cyclic testing of full scale prototype assemblies. This paper describes the mechanism underlying this fatigue behaviour by studying the initiation of cracking in corrugated high strength steel cladding. When subject to repeated loading cracks initiate within the cladding at the fasteners, nucleating in the plane of maximum shear through the cladding thickness prior to propagating into the plane of the cladding. Crack initiation was considered to be the point in which the thickness of the cladding was entirely bisected and the crack was beginning to propagate into the plane of the cladding. Based on this characterisation, a crack initiation criterion dependent on the surface principal strains in the region of crack initiation was developed for both the longitudinal and transverse directions of the cladding. In combination with detailed stress analysis such criteria could be implemented in a numerical model to predict crack initiation in cladding, providing an analytical tool which could greatly assist the fatigue design process and lead to a reduction in the total reliance on prototype testing of each individual system used. Australia's mining sector periodically suffered huge losses both directly and indirectly from mismanagement of mine water during extreme climatic events. Mine water managers still lack cost-effective tools and strategies to manage both climate-influenced drought and flooding challenges. This paper aims to answer a fundamental question in mine water management: how much can a water sharing approach do to reduce unpermitted (unregulated) mine-affected water to overflow to the environment on a regional scale? To this end, we built a climate-driven hierarchical systems model (C-HSM) of sixteen coal mines in the Bowen Basin of Queensland, Australia. The C-HSM simulated the dynamics of the mine water systems, which was then the basis to assess the potential of mine water sharing to reduce unregulated discharge. We found that mine water sharing could greatly cut down regional unregulated discharge during the 2010–2011 wet season (which included an extreme flooding event). The cost of building such a regional-scale sharing infrastructure for redistributing water was found to be competitive to the lost revenue due to reduced coal production. The capital cost could potentially be further reduced by using existing water pipelines – such as those used for coal seam gas water management – or considering cheap transporting options. Once the sharing infrastructure has been installed, it can prevent periodic suffering of mines from climate extremes. Combined with an actively regulated discharge strategy, the water sharing approach could almost completely eliminate the unregulated discharge and maintain mine water storages at a secure level. The capital and operational cost for the combined approach can be considerably reduced and the shared water could be stored at other sites (mines, water holding ponds from coal seam gas industry) and used for water-limited periods. This is the first work that explores the theoretical potential of mine water sharing to mitigate the risk of unregulated discharge. The work presented here reveals that mine water sharing could help mine water managers respond to a sudden change in extremes such as switching from extreme ‘dry’ to extreme ‘wet’ conditions. A combined mine water sharing strategy would be worth considering by mine water managers, due to its advantages in regards to safety, relatively lower implementation costs, its effectiveness of reducing unregulated discharge that may cause environmental harm and conserving excess water for future water-limited periods. The ultimate value of water savings through a sharing scheme may be considerable as it influences mining industry's social license-to-operate in the long term, especially under conditions where there is a water security issue of decreasing availability and increasing competition. Impurities that are transferred to a crime scene or a body can have a significant negative impact on the investigation if the existence of the contamination is not known, and the source of the contamination is not identified. Forensic consumables, such as DNA swabs, have been known to have caused contaminations, wrongfully linking crimes throughout Europe. In that context, this study focused on body bags, widely used to transfer a corpse from the crime scene to the morgue. Our preliminary survey showed that several countries and Australian Jurisdictions are conducting the sampling of trace evidence at the morgue after the transportation of the body. Potential impurities present in body bags could thus interfere with pertinent traces. The aim of this work was to qualify and quantify the background contamination of trace evidence in body bags used within Australia. Fifteen body bags from four Australian Jurisdictions or laboratories were searched for micro traces. Impurities such as fibres and unidentified particles were detected in each examined body bag, with an estimated average of 3603 coloured fibres and 1429 unidentified particles. This number of fibres is similar to the amount found on a vinyl cinema seat in other studies. Various other contaminants such as pieces of fabric, hairs, parts of insects or feathers were also observed. It is hypothesised that these impurities are introduced during the manufacturing process. This high number of impurities can lead to incorrect conclusions and misleading investigative leads. Pedogenon was proposed as a conceptual soil taxon derived from a set of quantitative state variables representing the soil-forming factors for a given reference time. This study aims to test the pedogenon concept in the Edgeroi region in New South Wales. This paper developed local pedogenons, designed a sampling scheme to capture soil variation under natural conditions and under intensive human activities, and tested the hypothesis that pedogenon is an efficient method of stratifying the landscape to capture soil variation. This study derived the 14 pedogenons by employing layers of soil-forming factors (soil, climate, organism, topography, and parent material and age) using an unsupervised classification technique (k-means clustering). Within each pedogenon, genosoils were identified based on areas with native vegetation, while phenosoils were identified as areas with cropping practises. One meter soil cores were collected for each genosoil and phenosoil, and scanned using Vis-NIR spectrometer for predicting soil properties (clay, sand, cation exchange capacity, pH, and organic carbon). Results show that each pedogenon was characterised by a soil type formed under a dominant parent material occupying a unique position in the landscape. Redundancy discriminant analysis of the soil properties as a function of pedogenon and depth of observations show that pedogenon significantly explained the variation in soil properties. Variance partitioning analysis confirmed that pedogenon explained a large proportion of the variation (49 %) as opposed to landuse (5 %). Principal component analysis of the soil properties shows that genosoils had twice the variation of phenosoils. The results indicate that agricultural activities homogenised the variation of soil profiles. This study demonstrated that pedogenon clasess can effectively characterise soil variation and be used as a benchmark to compare how human activities have altered soil conditions. As an irreplaceable power source, electricity is responsible for sustaining the national economy and social development, and the precondition for the power system's stable operation is to perform an accurate short-term load forecast (STLF). However, with the increasing forms of social power consumption and the emergence of large-scale sustainable resources on the grid, which make STLF increasingly challenging as the power load exhibits greater stochasticity and instability. Therefore, a novel STLF system is developed in this paper, which incorporates data fuzzy granulation, a high-performance optimizer for integrating forecasting sequences, point and interval forecasts. Moreover, the performance tests of the optimization algorithm verify that our proposed optimizer can obtain more approximate solution sets to the real Pareto front and outshines the traditional optimization algorithm concerning convergence and diversity. Load data from three regions of Australia demonstrate that our developed system can remarkably contribute to the accuracy and stability of the STLF , and also quantify the volatility and uncertainty of the power load, which allows power workers to better capture the fluctuation interval of future loads and effectively enhance the flexibility of grid operation. The River Torrens Catchment in Adelaide has suffered from poor water quality and flooding for decades. To address these challenges, a green infrastructure project, specifically a Linear Park, was created within the catchment. Although the project has functioned reasonably well since its implementation, its complex nature poses several management challenges. Despite the scale of this project, there is little scholarly literature available. Hence, to analyse these management challenges, this paper reviews the original project documentation, as well as regulations and policy documents together with findings from interviews with key project informants. The aim is to investigate the key drivers for implementation; the major stakeholders involved; and the challenges emerging from the multidimensional attributes of the project. The challenges relate to the inconsistent and informal management structure, the involvement of multiple stakeholders, and pressure from surrounding development. The challenges are further grouped under four main themes, including communication and collaboration, project design goals, institutional and political frameworks, and planning and development regulations. This paper argues that green governance is the key to the successful implementation and management of sustainable green infrastructure projects. Global forest restoration is vital to mitigate climate change. Tropical forests are under the greatest threat from clearing while offering significant potential for restoration. Forest carbon credits through trading schemes have the potential to enable restoration, providing landholders with incentives to restore forests. Impediments to restoration are numerous, with one of the main ones being the unknown costs of forest restoration and uncertain returns from payment schemes, such as carbon trading programs. Many research and modeling papers on the potential of carbon markets to stimulate reforestation in agricultural landscapes rely on general estimates of reforestation. The reality, though, is that the benefits, returns, and break-even points of the reforestation costs and carbon price are highly sensitive to actual costs. Few papers actually investigate the real costs of farm-level restoration. Nearly all recent papers have used modeled scenarios in calculating Net Present Value (NPV), and so estimates of restoration cost and a return from carbon vary widely depending on modeled assumptions. Real data from a demonstration project in the Wet Tropics of Australia are provided in this paper. Three land use scenarios are compared: carbon only, cattle only, and a combination of carbon and cattle using on-ground data for restoration. Not surprisingly, scenarios of the highest carbon prices generate the highest net benefits in both carbon only and mixed carbon and cattle scenarios. A minimum carbon price of AUD$37 per ton of carbon dioxide equivalent is required to match income derived from cattle. The current policy environment that rewards the lowest cost abatement runs counter to Australia playing its role in the urgent need to limit global temperature rise to 2 degrees Celsius and preferably 1.5 degrees Celsius. • Australian water pipes failure lifetime data are studied by probabilistic methods. • A simple stress concentrated model is used to describe the cast iron pipe failure subjected to corrosion. • The proposed model captures some essential features that can be used for remaining life prediction of corroded pipelines. At present, a significant proportion of Australia's ageing water infrastructure is composed of cast-iron pipes. The corrosion of cast-iron pipes is the main triggering factor for Australia's water industry. It has been found that the failure mode of small diameter water mains (<300 mm external diameters) from Yarra Valley Water is mainly the longitudinal failure (hoop-stressed) instead of broken back failure, which is unexpected. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to examine the failure mechanism of longitudinal failure of small diameter cast-iron pipes. The observational failure database provided by Yarra Valley Water show limited data availability. This has stimulated the focus of this paper: to examine the corrosion mechanism by utilising probabilistic inverse analysis for unknown physical parameters. Focusing on the likelihood of failure, this paper investigates the performance of small diameter cast-iron pipes by using statistical analysis based on the observational failure lifetime data within pipe cohorts. Background studies on the deterioration of cast-iron pipes due to corrosion are made to help set up the probabilistic physical modelling (PPM). Using the updated corrosion parameters, the lifetime probabilities of failure and the hazard rate of the cast iron model are derived from PPM. Last, it is found that the modelling results agree reasonably well with prediction curves of statistical data, indicating that the proposed method for pipe lifetime prediction is promising. Design: Human milk samples were collected and analysed for the levels of polychlorinated dibenzodioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) and selected dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). In total, 157 individual samples collected during 2002 and 2003 as well as 24 samples collected in 1993 were analysed as 20 pools. Results: PCDDs, PCDFs and dioxin-like PCBs were detected in all pooled samples. For samples collected during 2002/2003, the TEQDFP ranged from 6.0 to 15.2pgTEQg−1 lipid with an average of 9.0pgTEQg−1 lipid. The average lipid content was 3.7±0.5%. No systematic differences were observed in the levels of PCDDs, PCDFs and PCBs in human milk samples collected from different regions of Australia during 2002/2003. For samples collected in 1993 and analysed as pools, the mean level, expressed as TEQDFP was 16±1.4pgTEQg−1 lipid. The average lipid content was 3.9±0.7%. Conclusion: The levels of PCDDs, PCDFs and dioxin-like PCBs in the human milk of Australian women are both low compared to international levels and similar across all regions of Australia. Consistent with world-wide trends, the levels of PCDDs, PCDFs and dioxin-like PCBs have decreased over a 10 year period from 1993 to 2003 by approximately 40%. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Particulate matter (PM) or particle pollution include the tiny particles of dust and fly ash particles are expelled from coal-burning power plants. Coal combustion is an extremely prevalent source of air pollution, and resulting PM has substantial impacts on human health, especially in industrial zones. This paper aims to design a novel hybrid deep learning framework based on long short-term memory (LSTM) integrated with a two-stage data filtering technique to accurately predict the air quality indices (i.e., PM 2.5 and PM 10) in a chosen study region 'Miles Airport, Queensland,' that meets the needs of the coal seam gas industry in Australia. The data used to construct the novel hybrid two-stage data filtering technique based on LSTM comprising of six meteorological parameters (i.e., wind direction, wind speed, air temperature, relative humidity, solar radiation, and rainfall) and two environmental factors (i.e., ozone and total suspended particulate). In the first stage, two robust feature selection methods, namely, extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost) and the classification and regression tree (CART) approach, were adopted to explore the most significant predictors. Then in the second stage, the best subset regression (BSR) technique is utilized to determine the best subsets input combinations i.e., C1, C2, and C3 based on several particular metrics. The three BSR-based input combinations were employed in the LSTM model to estimate the PM 2.5 and PM 10. Furthermore, to validate the main hybrid framework, two advanced machine learning (ML) methods (i.e., LightGBM and ridge kernel regression (KRR)) and two traditional ML methods (i.e., Adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) and multilayer perceptron neural network (MLP)) were hybridized with the multi-level data filtering strategy by examining the optimal input combinations. Several statistical metrics, graphical tools, and diagnostic analyses evaluated the hybrid models. The outcomes of the PM 2.5 simulation based on 2375 data samples showed that the LSTM-C3 containing all the selected predictors yielded the most promising accuracy, followed by the LightGBM-C3 and MLP-C3 models. Control of the superheated steam temperature is a significant technical challenge to coal-fired power plants due to the strong nonlinearity, large inertia and parameter uncertainties with external disturbances. This paper proposes a robust proportion–integration–differentiation (PID) control of the superheated steam temperature with proven stability and the external disturbance rejection. The design is based on the proposed data-driven feedback compensator (DFC) which is a neural network (NN) trained to isolate the nonlinearity and inertia from the PID controller, allowing the system for tuning the PID controller can be simplified as an approximate linear system with the modeling error based-feedback and feed-forward compensations. Then, the PID controller is tuned by the Nyquist stability criterion to place every closed-loop pole to a specific region in the left-half s-plane to guarantee the stability with considering the modeling error. Besides, a NN based feed-forward compensator is trained as the inverse model of the feedback compensator to further smooth the temperature fluctuation caused by the disturbance. A rapidly warming planet provides a significant challenge to the design, delivery, and maintenance of habitable housing across Australia. Information on the adequacy of current measures for cooling Indigenous houses in regional and remote communities in relation to climate change and rising energy consumption costs is lacking. Such information is needed to better protect low socio-economic status householders, people with pre-existing health conditions, and people living in climatically exposed regions. This article models the thermal performance of both existing and 'improved' (built to current national construction code standards) housing stock in relation to various occupancy density, cooling system, and ventilation practice scenarios. This modelling was undertaken for housing in Australia's tropical, arid, and hot/mild climate zones, matching the sites where most discrete Indigenous communities are located. Results show that retrofitting existing housing stock and even building new stock to meet recommended standards are not adequate measures for current or future climate changes. This paper challenges current knowledge, policy, and practices regarding Indigenous housing, demonstrating that significant reform is necessary to maintain habitable conditions and improve energy resilience. Environmental issues are becoming more urgent. Biodiversity loss, climate change, extreme events and global pressures on resources place increasing importance on decision making about how natural resources should be managed. Natural capital accounting (NCA) is gaining popularity as a systematic approach to recognise the full value of natural resources such as soil, vegetation, animals, water, and biodiversity. To understand perceptions and opportunities for awareness and behaviour change relating to the use of NCA, we conducted a discourse analysis of 57 interviews with stakeholders across Australia. Our aim is to promote discussion and reflection about perceptions of natural resources as forms of capital, and the role of NCA to underpin management practice change and support sustainability. We identify four key areas of contestation that relate to values, complexity, digital technology, and the desired future vision of NCA in society. Findings include conflicting views around whether NCA should have a diversity of tailored approaches or a consistent approach for all and that digital technology has and will continue to shape the way NCA is conducted. Australia's species extinction rate is one of the highest in the world. Yet, there is limited evidence regarding people's recognition of, and preferences and support for, Australian endangered wildlife. This paper presents survey responses from 223 Zoos Victoria visitors (response rate: 39.1 %) and 90 community members (Victoria, Australia). We examined people's top 10 overall (global) and Australian favourite animals, and conducted an in-depth exploration of recognition of, and preferences and support for, seven Australian endangered species identified as being at risk of extinction within the next decade, including: the leadbeater's possum (Gymnobelideus leadbeateri), eastern barred bandicoot (Perameles gunnii), helmeted honeyeater (Lichenostomus melanops cassidix), southern corroboree frog (Pseudophryne corroboree), Lord Howe Island (LHI) stick insect (Dryococelus australis), Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii), and the orange-bellied parrot (Neophema chrysogaster). Results indicate that the only Australian animals to feature in the overall top 10 favourite list were the kangaroo (ranked 9th for both sample groups) and koala (ranked 6th and 10th for the community and zoo sample, respectively). The Tasmanian devil had the highest rate of recognition (>86 %), in comparison to the remaining six species (1.2–7.3 % across both samples). Endangered species were not prominent in the top favourite Australian species. Australian endangered species' likeability ratings typically followed the pattern of mammals being most likeable (Tasmanian devil and leadbeater's possum), followed by birds, frogs, and insects (helmeted honeyeater, southern corroboree frog, and LHI stick insect). Importantly, for most endangered native species featured (4/7 and 6/7; zoo and community, respectively), simply being able to recognise species significantly (p <.05) increased people's willingness to support their conservation. Findings underscore several powerful opportunities for future conservation programs to contribute to Australian endangered species conservation by striving to increase public familiarity with Australian species most at risk of extinction. This paper aims to assess the uniqueness of stakeholder engagement activities in air route development (ARD) and identify what leadership and governance attributes are more relevant in the four critical stages of ARD. Our context is the Australian aviation market, analysing the differences in this process when developing routes to airports of different sizes. In-depth semi-structured interviews were used as the primary data collection tool. Twenty-two ARD experts from airports, airlines, and tourism authorities (TAs) shared their views on ARD and stakeholder engagement. Our results are presented using the four stages of ARD (i.e., development of route objectives, market research, route development activities, and route implementation) and key leadership and governance attributes identified in each of these stages. In a tourism sector heavily dependent on air transport, where Australian airports operate under a light-handed regime with little competition among major airports, we have identified strong partnerships between the involved stakeholders. While the airport often leads the ARD process, airports of different sizes engage differently. TAs play a significant role, particularly for regional and emerging airports. Diet-related chronic diseases are a major health problem faced by developed and developing countries. Although individuals’ dietary patterns are often associated with varied psychological and socioeconomic factors, built environment factors can be important determinants of food choices. Whilst there is some evidence to suggest a link between access to food and food consumption, it remains unclear how a wider range of built environment factors influence residents’ food choices. A deeper understanding of these relationships could reveal under-researched aspects of a healthy built environment. This paper explores how residents in inner Sydney neighborhoods access food and investigates how characteristics of the built environment influence their food choices. Eighteen participants, representing a range of ethnic backgrounds and levels of income, were selected for in-depth interviews. Several urban barriers to healthy food consumption were identified through analysis. Distance, land use and urban form, in particular, shape the food choices of individuals in different ways. This paper describes insights gained from a decade of autonomous marine systems development at the University of Sydney’s Australian Centre for Marine Robotics. Over the course of this time, we have deployed numerous vehicles and imaging platforms in support of applications in engineering science, marine ecology, archaeology and geoscience. We have operated an Australia-wide benthic observing program designed to deliver precisely navigated, repeat imagery of the seafloor. This initiative makes extensive use of Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) to collect high-resolution stereo imagery, multibeam sonar and water column measurements on an annual or semi-annual basis at sites around Australia, spanning the full latitudinal range of the continent from tropical reefs in the north to temperate regions in the south. We have also contributed to expeditions to document coral bleaching, cyclone recovery, submerged neolithic settlement sites, ancient shipwrecks, methane seeps and deepwater hydrothermal vents. Monitoring changes in the terrestrial carbon cycle and vegetation health can only be undertaken over large areas and on a regular basis using ecological indicators derived from satellite-based sensors. Climate conditions in Mediterranean ecosystems have undergone, and are projected to undergo, significant change in the future with marked impacts on forest and shrubland vegetation. In the southwest of Australia (SWAU), endemic tree species have experienced significant declines in health and mortality since the early 1990s primarily due to these climatic changes. In this paper we examine trends in Net Primary Production (NPP) from 2000 to 2011 as an indicator of productivity and health condition of the woody vegetation across the SWAU region. To do so, we examine NPP estimates derived from satellite imagery and climate data to answer the questions: (1) what is the extent and rate of change in NPP for the SWAU region over the study period, and (2) how important is fire as a contributing factor in the observed trends? Our results suggest that, similar to the global trend in Mediterranean ecosystems, between 2000 and 2011, overall NPP declined across the study region, with the majority of declines occurring in the ecological transition zone between trees and shrubs. Twenty-six percent of the 37,042 square kilometre of woody vegetation that showed a declining NPP trend, was affected by fire. The overall rate of NPP decline for the region was estimated to be −0.38 megaton C per year since 2000, indicating a reduction in the capacity of the region to act as a carbon sink. Under climate change projections, the observed decline trends are likely to continue and our results suggest that the carbon storage potential in this region is gradually decreasing following an ecological shift from tall tree-dominated to lower shrub-dominated vegetation. The current approach for protecting the receiving water environment from urban stormwater pollution is the adoption of structural measures commonly referred to as Water Sensitive Urban Design (WSUD). The treatment efficiency of WSUD measures closely depends on the design of the specific treatment units. As stormwater quality is influenced by rainfall characteristics, the selection of appropriate rainfall events for treatment design is essential to ensure the effectiveness of WSUD systems. Based on extensive field investigations in four urban residential catchments based at Gold Coast, Australia, and computer modelling, this paper details a technically robust approach for the selection of rainfall events for stormwater treatment design using a three-component model. The modelling results confirmed that high intensity-short duration events produce 58.0% of TS load while they only generated 29.1% of total runoff volume. Additionally, rainfall events smaller than 6-month average recurrence interval (ARI) generates a greater cumulative runoff volume (68.4% of the total annual runoff volume) and TS load (68.6% of the TS load exported) than the rainfall events larger than 6-month ARI. The results suggest that for the study catchments, stormwater treatment design could be based on the rainfall which had a mean value of 31 mm/h average intensity and 0.4 h duration. These outcomes also confirmed that selecting smaller ARI rainfall events with high intensity-short duration as the threshold for treatment system design is the most feasible approach since these events cumulatively generate a major portion of the annual pollutant load compared to the other types of events, despite producing a relatively smaller runoff volume. This implies that designs based on small and more frequent rainfall events rather than larger rainfall events would be appropriate in the context of efficiency in treatment performance, cost-effectiveness and possible savings in land area needed. This paper aims to assess the service quality at Melbourne airport by conducting an airport user survey. The results demonstrate that there are significant discrepancies between passengers’ expectations of service quality and their perceptions of service quality at the airport. Measured values for passenger satisfaction are found to be consistently lower than those for passenger expectations, which imply that there is room for Melbourne airport to improve its service quality. Fourteen of the thirty service items used in the survey were rated as important and satisfactory, and thus should be maintained. Airport parking, immigration, internet/Wi-Fi access, and baggage delivery are areas that may have caused concerns for passengers and should be urgently addressed by airport management. Despite considerable mitigation efforts, global emissions from the electricity sector continued to grow in recent years. In Australia, the electricity sector is the largest CO 2 -emitting industry, contributing 35% of the country's total greenhouse gas emissions. The Australian government targets an 80% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 relative to 2010. With a large variety and quantity of renewable energy resources, it is technically feasible and seems indispensable that Australia's electricity sector be largely decarbonised by 2050 in order to achieve this target. In this paper, scenario-based hybrid Life-Cycle Assessment is applied to calculate the economy-wide carbon footprints of seven electricity generation technologies in scenarios with differing renewable electricity penetration. This work is the first to apply a full life-cycle approach to scenario analysis of electricity generation in Australia. The findings are at the higher end of previously reported carbon footprint intensity ranges and above median values. However, even when taking into account indirect emissions along the technologies' life-cycles, the results indicate that the employment of different renewable energy technologies can potentially save a considerable fraction of Australia's greenhouse gas emissions. Predator's management requires a detailed understanding of the ecological circumstances associated with predation. Predation by foxes has been a significant contributor to the Australian native animal reduction. This paper mainly focuses on the dissemination of rabbit hemorrhagic disease in the rabbit population and its subsequences on red fox ( Vulpes vulpes ) population, by qualitative and quantitative analyses of a designed eco-epidemiological model with simple law of mass action and sigmoid functional response. Existence of solution has been analyzed and shown to be uniformly bounded. The basic reproduction number ( R 0 ) is obtained and the occurrence of a backward bifurcation at R 0 = 1 is shown to be possible using central manifold theory. Global stability of endemic equilibrium is established by geometric approach. Criteria for diffusion-driven ecological instability caused by local random movements of European rabbits and red fox are obtained. Detailed analyses of Turing patterns formation selected by reaction-diffusion system under zero flux boundary conditions are presented. We found that transmission rate, self and cross-diffusion coefficients have appreciable influence on spatial spread of epidemics. Numerical simulation results confirm the analytical finding and generate patterns which indicate that population of red foxes might be controlled if rabbit hemorrhagic disease (RHD) is introduced into the rabbit population and thus ecological balance can be maintained. Along with the recent real estate development in major cities of Australia, sustainable construction is one of the measures being implemented to reduce negative impacts of the construction industry on the environment, society, and economy. However, there is a lack of detailed review of this kind of important studies that is critical to Australian future endeavour. This paper presents a systematic review of a large scale earthwork project and discusses concerns/examples under three dimensions. Firstly the environment aspect, factors including remediation of the various type of contaminated and general waste, management of runoff water, dust control, noise and vibration monitoring are showcased; secondly the society aspect, factors including innovated wheel wash facility, CCTV system, drainage protection, and wildlife protection are mentioned; lastly the economy aspect, factors including integrated weighbridge management system, recycling waste water, recycling rock are demonstrated. The research identifies future opportunities such as the innovation of evaluation system, project design framework, finance analysis model, and potentially integration of sustainable construction practise into Australian code of practice. In Australia, the road network is extensive and consists chiefly of unbound granular material overlain by a thin layer of asphalt. With trafficking and adverse environmental conditions, roads may become unserviceable quite quickly. So there is a need to re-condition granular roads through in-situ recycling to achieve the sustainability goals of re-use of materials and reduction of greenhouse gases by minimizing transport of materials. Bitumen, in the form of either cold emulsion or foamed bitumen, has been used for this purpose quite successfully, but there exist situations where it is too expensive for the road authority, given the nature of the road, or bitumen may not be suitable if plastic fines exist in the pavement material. Environmental conditions such as poor drainage of primarily flat land may also have local government looking for alternative treatments. Hydrophobic dry powder polymers (DPP) mixed with lime can serve to provide an improved road base quickly at relatively low cost. Unfortunately the literature on polymer additives in aggregates is quite limited and so research has commenced with the aid of local government agencies in Adelaide, South Australia. In this paper a field trial and laboratory investigation are presented on the comparative engineering properties of treated and untreated aggregates from a road trial. Testing has included hydraulic conductivity, large column capillary rise tests and repeated loading triaxial testing. Subgrades of expansive nature are one of the main causes of damage to road network in Australia. Consequently, lime stabilization has been widely used to reduce the swell- shrink potential of these types of soils and thus reduce the associated damage. After stabilization and compaction, the subgrade will naturally be exposed to cycles of full swell and or partial shrinkage due to climatic cycles. This paper investigates this behaviour for lime stabilized compacted expansive soil from weathered Quaternary Volcanic geological deposits located in Western Victoria; Australia. These soils were stabilized with varying percentages of hydrated lime (2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 percent) and the swell-shrink paths of both untreated and treated soils were studied. Test specimens were compacted at optimum moisture content and maximum dry density. The samples were subjected to full swell-shrink cycles under a surcharge of 25 kPa to reach structural stabilization and to simulate the impact of climatic wetting and drying cycles. Vertical deformation and swell-shrink cycle relationships for untreated and treated samples were obtained and analyzed. The results of lime stabilization indicate that equilibrium is reached after three cycles for both untreated and treated samples. In addition, results suggest that maximum deformation occurs in the second swelling cycle. Vertical deformation of untreated sample was reduced to a third after adding 2 percent lime and reduced to a sixth after adding 3 percent lime. The gradient of swelling and shrinkage path reduced to about a sixth and third when it is treated with 2 and 3 percent, respectively. The ballasted railroads form an integral part of the modern transportation infrastructure in Australia. However, they are subjected to large stresses especially on mixed traffic lines, where heavy freight trains are operated. Under such adverse operational conditions, ballast progressively degrades contributing to overall track deformations and frequent maintenance. Maintaining geometry of ballast embankments is necessary to improve safety and efficiency of railway operations. The use of artificial inclusions (geosynthetics and shock mats) as well as recycled (discarded) ballast in track can be economically viable options. In order to gain more insight, the CGRE has conducted extensive field trials on two rail lines in Bulli and Singleton in New South Wales supported by Sydney Trains and Australian Rail Track Corporation, respectively. In these studies, different types of geosynthetics (geogrid, geotextile and geocomposite) and shock mats were installed beneath the ballast layer constructed on varying subgrade conditions. Relative advantages of different geogrids were studied. Traffic induced stresses, ballast breakage, transient and permanent deformations were routinely monitored using precise instrumentation schemes. Ambient ultrafine particle number concentrations (PNC) have inhomogeneous spatio-temporal distributions and depend on a number of different urban factors, including background conditions and distant sources. This paper quantitatively compares exposure to ambient ultrafine particles at urban schools in two cities in developed countries, with high insolation climatic conditions, namely Brisbane (Australia) and Barcelona (Spain). The analysis used comprehensive indoor and outdoor air quality measurements at 25 schools in Brisbane and 39 schools in Barcelona. PNC modes were analysed with respect to ambient temperature, land use and urban characteristics, combined with the measured elemental carbon concentrations, NO x (Brisbane) and NO 2 (Barcelona). The trends and modes of the quantified weekday average daily cycles of ambient PNC exhibited significant differences between the two cities. PNC increases were observed during traffic rush hours in both cases. However, the mid-day peak was dominant in Brisbane schools and had the highest contribution to total PNC for both indoors and outdoors. In Barcelona, the contribution from traffic was highest for ambient PNC, while the mid-day peak had a slightly higher contribution for indoor concentrations. Analysis of the relationships between PNC and land use characteristics in Barcelona schools showed a moderate correlation with the percentage of road network area and an anti-correlation with the percentage of green area. No statistically significant correlations were found for Brisbane. Overall, despite many similarities between the two cities, school-based exposure patterns were different. The main source of ambient PNC at schools was shown to be traffic in Barcelona and mid-day new particle formation in Brisbane. The mid-day PNC peak in Brisbane could have been driven by the combined effect of background and meteorological conditions, as well as other local/distant sources. Australian railway networks suffer a large fluctuation of extreme heats each year due to their wide variety of geographical conditions. Depending on climatic, cloud and radiation conditions, an ambient temperature of 20 °C could induce an equivalent thermal load absorption of track components as much as 30 °C to 35 °C or even more. As such, relatively high turnover of timber sleepers (crossties in a plain track), bearers (skeleton ties in a turnout), and transoms (bridge cross beams) can often be observed due to their unstable deformation and rapid deterioration. This paper investigates an application for the replacement of ageing timber transoms mounted on existing railway bridges using fibre reinforced foamed urethane (FFU) transom beams, which are proven to provide environmental, safety and financial benefits. Clear benefits of the FFU material are the maintainability and constructability, especially for existing railway bridges. In this study, numerical simulations using finite element package ABAQUS have been carried out to illustrate the effect of thermal loads on the structural behaviour of a railway transom bridge. The model was developed using a case study of an actual railway bridge in Kiama, Australia and it has been validated by field data measurements. It is found that nonlinear structural behaviour of the bridge components exists at highly elevated temperatures. Globally, centralised urban water systems are under pressure to respond to environmental and economic pressures. In Australia, high infrastructure costs and variable rainfall have prompted governments, end-users and property developers to begin investing in more decentralised systems that use alternative water sources (rainwater, stormwater and wastewater). This trend is based on a fit-for-purpose principle and is part of a global shift toward sustainable urban water management. These developments suggest that Australia's urban water sector may be in the early stages of transition and represent a multi-decadal shift from centralisation of water supply and sanitation to partial decentralisation based on local conditions. Much of the scholarship on decentralised systems focuses on drivers and barriers to adoption, which implies a static and mechanistic process of change, and overlooks the complex interplay between exogenous pressures, innovation, multiple actors and industry reform. This paper addresses this gap by analysing temporal processes of Australia's urban water sector, using a regionally based case study comprising an historical review and interview study that analyses the multi-level, -decadal and -actor developments at the nexus between water service provision and property development. The analysis revealed emerging tensions between incumbent water utilities, property developers and end-users, and an inherent conflict between neo-liberal and environmental policy agendas. If engineers are to provide sustainable innovations for future societies, engineers should be able to think and act beyond pure technical competence. This is stressed in political and accreditation frameworks all over the world, and universities are trying to respond to this demand. However, in many cases, sustainability practices seem fragmented and there is a lack of knowledge of strategies and few clear examples of good practice. In this paper, activities to integrate sustainability in two engineering institutions, one in Denmark and one in Australia, are systematically compared to provide an understanding of different kinds of activities and their internal as well as external enablers. A conceptual framework to provide overview of education for sustainability activities and their enablers has been proposed, where activities are related to actors and resources at both university and national levels. The conceptual framework has been developed iteratively – moving back and forth trying to find a suitable structure to capture the contextual pillars of the activities in the two cases, using state-of-art within the research field of education for sustainable development to fill out potential blind spots in the case-material and, finally, continuously shaping the storylines in the two cases to provide the needed overview and understanding of the similarities and differences of the approaches. The interplay between the framework and the case-stories provides a platform for change, as the framework does not only create an overview of activities, it also points out potential routes not taken, and the case studies provide examples of activities, which can be transferred with careful consideration to the internal as well as external context. Both the scientific and decision-making aspects of the nascent paradigm of risk-based flood management are highly complex. While scientists must account for potential future dynamics in flood risk resulting from climate change or settlement growth, decision-makers are urged to consider a host of flood management options and thus face a significantly enlarged decision scope. In light of the complexities that arise from the shift in flood policy, there is a growing need to better integrate science and decision-making and develop an interface to combine different knowledge domains. This paper discusses scientist–stakeholder workshops (SSW) as a collaborative approach within a flood-related Integrated Assessment (IA) to connect the assessment of (flood) risks more closely to the process of policy implementation. We present findings from two SSW conducted as part of the project RiskAdapt in two Austrian flood-prone municipalities with the aim of (i) reflecting the determinants of vulnerability, (ii) identifying local context conditions, (iii) developing adaptive measures for extreme scenarios and thereby (iv) facilitating anticipatory adaptation to flood risk dynamics. We illustrate the potential and constraints of SSW as a participatory method in flood risk management and discuss the possibilities of institutionalizing SSW in the context of the EU Floods Directive implementation in Austria. In a recent Australian homicide, trace soil on the victim's clothing suggested she was initially attacked in her front yard and not the park where her body was buried. However the important issue that emerged during the trial was how soil was transferred to her clothing. This became the catalyst for designing a range of soil transference experiments (STEs) to study, recognise and classify soil patterns transferred onto fabric when a body is dragged across a soil surface. Soil deposits of interest in this murder were on the victim's bra and this paper reports the results of anthropogenic soil transfer to bra-cups and straps caused by dragging. Transfer patterns were recorded by digital photography and photomicroscopy. Eight soil transfer patterns on fabric, specific to dragging as the transfer method, appeared consistently throughout the STEs. The distinctive soil patterns were largely dependent on a wide range of soil features that were measured and identified for each soil tested using X-ray Diffraction and Non-Dispersive Infra-Red analysis. Digital photographs of soil transfer patterns on fabric were analysed using image processing software to provide a soil object-oriented classification of all soil objects with a diameter of 2 pixels and above transferred. Although soil transfer patterns were easily identifiable by naked-eye alone, image processing software provided objective numerical data to support this traditional (but subjective) interpretation. Image software soil colour analysis assigned a range of Munsell colours to identify and compare trace soil on fabric to other trace soil evidence from the same location; without requiring a spectrophotometer. Trace soil from the same location was identified by linking soils with similar dominant and sub-dominant Munsell colour peaks. Image processing numerical data on the quantity of soil transferred to fabric, enabled a relationship to be discovered between soil type, clay mineralogy (smectite), particle size and soil moisture content that would not have been possible otherwise. Soil type (e.g. Anthropogenic, gravelly sandy loam soil or Natural, organic-rich soil), clay mineralogy (smectite) and soil moisture content were the greatest influencing factors in all the dragging soil transference tests (both naked eye and measured properties) to explain the eight categories of soil transference patterns recorded. This study was intended to develop a method for dragging soil transference laboratory experiments and create a baseline of preliminary soil type/property knowledge. The community is the basic unit of urban development, and appropriate assessment tools are needed for communities to evaluate and facilitate decision making concerning sustainable community development and reduce the detrimental effects of urban community actions on the environment. Existing research into sustainable community rating tools focuses primarily on those that are internationally recognized to describe their advantages and future challenges. However, the differences between rating tools due to different regional conditions, situations and characteristics have yet to be addressed. In doing this, this paper examines three sustainable community rating tools in Australia, namely Green Star-Communities PILOT, EnviroDevelopment and VicUrban Sustainability Charter (Master Planned Community Assessment Tool). In order to identify their similarities, differences and advantages these are compared in terms of sustainability coverage, prerequisites, adaptation to locality, scoring and weighting, participation, presentation of results, and application process. These results provide the stakeholders of sustainable community development projects with a better understanding of the available rating tools in Australia and assist with evaluation and decision making. Darwin Harbour, Northern Territory, Australia, is a semi diurnal macro-tidal embayment that is situated in a cyclone prone area. The tidal variations range up to 8 m with a mean tidal range of 3.7 m. The coastal area consists of mangrove fringes, sandy beaches, tidal flats, rocky shore platforms and coastal cliffs. The main morphological changes are movement of the sandbars and erosion of beaches and coastal cliffs. Sea level rise due to climate change and more intense cyclones and storm surges may exacerbate these processes with detrimental impacts on the coast and the adjacent city, particularly when occurring at high tide. To assist with coastal erosion management, a greater understanding of morphological changes is required. A two-dimensional depth averaged finite-element hydrodynamic model (RMA-2), coupled with a sediment transport model (RMA-11) from Resource Modelling Associates, have been used to deduce the sources and spatial patterns of sand erosion and deposition in the harbour. Geochemical analysis is also used to characterize the sand source(s). This paper presents hydrodynamic simulations focusing on culturally and recreationally significant beaches in Fannie Bay. Simulations indicate that the Cullen Bay sandbar is an indirect sand source replenishing Fannie Bay beaches. Respective geochemical results also show similar Rare Earth Element contents of the sand in the area. Considering the fast pace of development in and around Darwin Harbour, this study is essential in providing a fundamental understanding of coastal processes and to assist coastal and shoreline management in a tropical estuary. Recent trends in increased public environmental awareness coupled with the introduction of governmental incentives, has resulted in a remarkably rapid growth in rooftop photovoltaic (PV) installations at a residential level in Australia. Despite the widely perceived economic and environmental benefits of rooftop PV, the economic and environmental performance of rooftop PV under Australian conditions are yet to be thoroughly examined. Whilst prior studies on the subject of rooftop PV are extensively overseas based, the conditions under which they are performed differ immensely from the Australian conditions. Consequently, this paper focuses on evaluating the life cycle economic and environmental merit of rooftop PV in Australia. By making use of component-wise costs and embedded emissions associated with each component of the rooftop PV generation system, the life cycle cost and emission models have been developed. For this to occur, the Australian costs and, energy and emission intensities have been used. All the life cycle factors relating to the manufacturing, purchasing, installation and operation of rooftop PV are considered. A sensitivity analysis is performed with respect to electricity price, feed-in tariff, battery price, battery lifetime and emission intensities. The results of the cost and emissions analyses are collectively used to estimate the cost of emissions mitigation through the use of rooftop PV for current and potential future scenarios in Australia. The cost payback and the energy payback times are found to range between 11 to more than 25 years and 1.75 to 14 years, respectively. The study also reveals that local load profile can have a significant impact on payback times. For example, the cost payback without battery storage is found to be the least for Tasmania which hosts the least favourable solar insolation conditions and lowest feed-in tariff amongst the Australian states however possesses a high daily load and electricity price. This paper evaluates and compares the system performance of a solar desiccant-evaporative cooling (SDEC) system with a referenced conventional variable air volume (VAV) system for a typical office building in all 8 Australian capital cities. A simulation model of the building is developed using the whole building simulation software EnergyPlus. The performance indicators for the comparison are system coefficient of performance (COP), annual primary energy consumption, annual energy savings, and annual CO 2 emissions reduction. The simulation results show that Darwin has the most apparent advantages for SDEC system applications with an annual energy savings of 557 GJ and CO 2 emission reduction of 121 tonnes. The maximum system COP is 7. For other climate zones such as Canberra, Hobart and Melbourne, the SDEC system is not as energy efficient as the conventional VAV system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To be sustainable in energy usage in the future, there are two aspects that need to be considered: the energy supply or generation and the consumption side, including the closely linked construction and building industries which consume a large amount of energy. Essential requirements for energy efficiency are to produce less greenhouse gas emissions and to rely more on renewable energy sources for future sustainability. Policies for mitigation of the environment impact are having effects on both the supply and demand. While the former requires more alternate sources in smart grids and improved technologies for carbon capture and storage, the latter involves the reduction of energy wastes and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as prerequisites to green certification within the construction and building sector. Thus, access to sustainable, affordable, and secure energy is one of the major global strategic priorities to maintain and improve public health, sustain economic growth, and mitigate the effects of climate change. Toward this goal, many countries, including Australia, are investing in clean, efficient, reliable energy systems for a prosperous and environmentally sustainable future. Hence, exploring various options to ensure energy security by diversification of energy sources is an important step in meeting the future requirements and delivering clean energy to different industry sectors. Aquatic centres are popular recreational facilities in Australia and other developed countries. These buildings have experienced exponential demand over the past few decades. The growing desire for better indoor environmental quality in aquatic centres has resulted in a marked increase in energy consumption in this sector. With the existence of multiple user groups, achieving thermal comfort has always been challenging. Even though several thermal comfort studies are conducted in other building types, such studies are very limited with respect to aquatic centres. This paper analyses the thermal comfort conditions of various user groups in seven aquatic centres in Australia. Comfort measurements are performed through monitoring environmental parameters and surveying swimmers, staff and spectators. The results revealed the variation of air temperatures among the buildings, resulting in high level of thermal discomfort for the spectators and staff in some of the buildings. The thermal sensation of the staff and spectators had good correlation with the indoor temperatures and PMVs. Altering temperature settings according to the seasons will help to improve the comfort with respect to the adaptation and expectation of the occupants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Australia, tropospheric ozone measurements in rural locations are scarce with measurements mostly made in cities. This limits the ability to estimate background ozone levels that inform policy development. The few studies that have assessed rural ozone in Australia have been associated with short campaign monitoring or specific, short-term research programs. Recognising this deficit of information, the New South Wales Government has established long-term ozone monitoring at two rural locations. This paper presents results from the first three years of monitoring at Gunnedah. We assess seasonal, diurnal and sectoral patterns of ozone. Several events are analysed, including high ozone associated with the 2019/20 Australian Bushfire Emergency and an extreme heatwave event. We find that ozone levels at Gunnedah exceed the screening standards set by Australia's National Environmental Protection (Ambient Air Quality) Measure, emphasising the need for additional ozone monitoring in rural and regional Australia. Our early results indicate that in NSW, background ozone mixing ratios for airmasses of continental origin is likely in the range of 36–39 ppb, higher than the 14–30 ppb associated with air masses of marine origin and greater than the 30 ppb background mixing ratio used for monitoring design and standard setting in Australia. Maximum 8-hourly ozone in non-bushfire impacted events is as high as 64 ppb, demonstrating the challenges that rural/regional communities may face in always meeting the new Australian 8-h ozone standard of 65 ppb. • The LSTM method is proposed to construct the LUBE approach-based prediction interval for wind power forecast. • An innovative fuzzy approach is suggested to adjust the prediction interval coverage probability. • CDOA is applied to achieve the most optimal prediction intervals. This paper proposes a novel deep learning method based on lower-upper-bound-estimation (LUBE) and long short-term memory (LSTM) models to capture the uncertainty effects in the power generation of wind turbines. The LUBE model deploys the prediction interval concept as well as the LSTM approach to make a robust and resilient model. The LSTM approach is applied to construct the optimal prediction intervals with an appropriate upper bound and lower bound with a certain confidence level. In addition, the fuzzy set theory is proposed in the model to let adjust LSTM parameters based on the decision maker's ideas. This approach empowers operators to satisfy both coverage probability and width indicators of prediction intervals to achieve the optimal solution. The collective decision optimization algorithm is introduced to provide more flexibility in tuning the LSTM parameters. More timely and accurate air quality forecasting could contribute to better public health protection and air pollution prevention. Particulates are a significant indicator for measuring the degree of air pollution. This paper reports on research to model an early warning tool for coarse particulates when assessing the impact of the 12 satellite-derived and ground-based meteorological pollutants out of 30 pollutants considered using hourly Australian data from January 2018–December 2020. A one-dimensional convolutional neural network (CNN) was integrated with a one-directional fully gated recurrent unit (GRU) to forecast consecutive hours' air quality. The CNN model acts as a spatial feature extractor, whereas the new generation GRU makes it computationally efficient. The resultant hybrid ' CNN-GRU' is then comprehensively benchmarked outperforming an ensemble of six other deep learning models. The proposed model's efficacy is indicated at the four most air polluted Australian postcodes in the testing phase. A detailed error analysis with visual and statistical metrics for air quality forecasting ascertains the proposed model's countermeasure to reduce harm and loss. The practical tool is immensely beneficial and can be widely deployed to the regions of public health concern where air pollution is a significant hazard.
