Post-collisional porphyry copper deposit (PCD) is a new genetic type of PCDs discovered in the Himalayan–Tibetan orogenic belt. It is believed that the formation of ore-forming magmas results from the re-melting of a sulfide-bearing, thickened, juvenile mafic lower crust in a magmatic arc associated with the oceanic plate subduction. However, the material contribution of subduction processes to the formation of this particular arc magma remains unclear. In this paper, we attempted to present a study that includes petrology, mineral geochemistry, whole rock Sr–Nd–Li isotopes, of Late Cretaceous Lilong ultramafic igneous rocks, south Lhasa sub-terrane, Tibet. The target ultramafic igneous rocks are sulfide-bearing cumulates. They show relative depletion in whole rock Nd isotopic compositions, slightly elevated (87Sr/86Sr) i ratios (0.7043–0.7059), and variable δ7Li values (2.8–9.0‰). Simulation results showed that trace element of melts in equilibrium with cumulus hornblende grains exhibit typical arc-like trace element distribution patterns, indicating that these ultramafic igneous rocks crystallized from arc magma. Additionally, the modeled melts showed enrichment in melt-mobile elements such as Ba, Pb, Sr, Th, and light rare earth elements (LREE), and higher Th/Yb ratios, as compared with normal mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB). These geochemical properties can be explained by the metasomatism of depleted MORB mantle peridotites by hydrous melts derived from subducted seafloor sediments. Whole rock Sr isotopes show correlations with Ba/Nb and Th/La ratios for the modeled melts, showing that fluids from the basaltic igneous crust, in addition to hydrous melts from the seafloor sediments, contribute to their mantle source. In addition, the heterogeneity of whole rock δ7Li values for ultramafic igneous rocks also indicates that their mantle sources have been metasomatized by terrigenous sediment- and altered oceanic crust-derived fluids. Depleted MORB mantle peridotites react with the mixed fluids at sub-arc depths to produce ultramafic metasomatites, and model calculations for trace element contents and Sr–Nd–Li isotopic compositions further validate that the geochemical compositions of the Lilong ultramafic rocks can be clarified by this process. The Late Paleozoic Ice Age is characterized by diverse stratigraphic records with extensive spatial-temporal distribution in the Gondwana. The Lhasa terrane located in northeastern Gondwana during the late Paleozoic developed successive glacial sedimentary records, but the depositional evidence, as well as age constraint for the onset of glaciation, is unknown. This paper provides the first full description of the basal glacial deposits in the Xainza area of Lhasa terrane, southern Tibet. Conodonts present in the carbonate overlying the glacial bed (1 m) dominantly consist of Declinognathodus intermedius , indicating that the initiation of the Late Paleozoic Ice Age in the Lhasa terrane took place in Bashkirian. Three facies associations were recognized: (i) tidal flat association (subtidal channel, bar, intertidal mixed flat), (ii) subglacial association (megaclasts and melt-out diamictite), and (iii) lonestone-bearing heterolithic association (grounding-line fan and iceberg). These facies associations are vertically arranged into a complete transgressive-retrogressive glacial succession. Ice movement direction reconstructed from the imbricated megaclasts, the concordant folds and the lateral distribution of subglacial deposits and glacial marine deposits is consistently from NNE to SSW. These characteristics suggest that the Bashkirian glaciation in the Lhasa terrane is irrelevant to western Australia, implying that these two blocks were separated during the Late Carboniferous. • The initiation of the LPIA in the Lhasa terrane took place in Bashkirian. • The tidal flat, subglacial and lonestone-bearing heterolithic associations were recognized. • The reconstructed ice movement direction is from NNE to SSW. • The Bashkirian glaciation in the Lhasa terrane is irrelevant to western Australia. • The Lhasa terrane was separated from Australia during the Late Carboniferous. In this paper, we have analyzed the wind, temperature and optical turbulence index structure constant (C n 2) that are directly measured for the first time at Lhasa, Tibet. Unlike other mid-or-low latitude regions, the wind speed in Lhasa increases with the altitude according to the wind profiles, besides a strong wind speed near the tropopause. The temperature profiles indicate a large temperature change near the tropopause. The optical turbulence profiles show daily variation. When the altitude is below 12 km, except for individual points, the C n 2 values during morning and evening are basically in the same range of 10−17-10−15 m-2/3. When altitude is above 12 km, the intensity of turbulence during the morning in Lhasa is 1–2 orders of magnitude larger than that of the evening. In addition, we propose a turbulence profile model on the basis of Hufnagel-valley model to calculate the integrated values of the refractive index structure constants of the entire atmosphere, such as the Fried parameter, the seeing, the coherence time and the isoplanatic angle. The mean atmospheric coherence length r 0 is 5.77 cm. The uplift of the Tibetan Plateau has been widely associated with India-Asia continental collision during the Cenozoic. However, recent studies have proposed that a proto-Tibetan Plateau in central Tibet was elevated during the late Mesozoic. This paper improves that understanding by focusing on the Cretaceous terrestrial strata in the Gerze area of central Tibet. Our studies suggest that the Qushenla Formation in the Nare area contains alluvial fan conglomerate intercalated with rhyolitic ignimbrite and vesicular rhyolite. Zircon U Pb dating of rhyolitic ignimbrite (103.9 ± 1.4 Ma) and two granitoid boulders of conglomerate (106.0 ± 1.6 and 106.1 ± 1.5) indicate that the Qushenla Formation was deposited during the late Albian. The compositions of the Qushenla Formation conglomerate were dominated by hypabyssal intrusions on the southern Qiangtang terrane, which recorded a rapid uplift and denudation process in the late Albian, accompanied by intense volcanic eruptions. The second set of terrestrial strata is the Upper Cretaceous Jingzhushan Formation alluvial fan-braided river deposits, which can be divided into a lower conglomerate member (Member 1) and a upper sandstone member (Member 2). The large amount of bioclastic limestone fragments in the Member 1 show that they come from the Upper Cretaceous Langshan Formation in the central and northern Lhasa subterranes. While in the Member 2, abundant limestone debris, detrital zircon yielding Jurassic–Cretaceous ages with ε Hf (t) values between −18.6 and + 8.4, and occurrence of volcanic and ancient zircon grains indicate a volcanic-sedimentary source located in the central and northern Lhasa subterranes, with some input from the Bangong-Nujiang suture zone. This suggests that the central and northern Lhasa subterranes experienced rapid crustal uplift in the Late Cretaceous, thus ending the marine sedimentary environment since the Jurassic. Based on the temporal and spatial sedimentary characteristics of the Qushenla and Jingzhushan formations as well as the regional data, our integrated study suggests that the central plateau (Lhasa and southern Qiangtang terranes) experienced a complex uplift history during the Aptian-Turonian, with southwards stepwise growth in time and space. Furthermore, the uplift mechanism of the central plateau is complex, which was controlled by the diachronous closure of the Bangong-Nujiang Tethyan Ocean from east to west during the Early Cretaceous, and by the far-field forces associated with northwards subduction of the Neo-Tethys Ocean during the Late Cretaceous. The history of crustal thickening is critical for comprehending the evolution process of the Tibetan plateau. The genetic relationship and spatiotemporal distribution of adakitic rocks with high Sr/Y, (La/Yb) N ratios may impose fundamental constraints on specific geodynamic and crustal thickening processes. The Songka intrusive suite consists of adakitic rocks with high-Mg adakite (monzonites), low-Mg adakitic rocks (quartz monzonites), and gabbroic-diorites. Their geochemical characteristics, petrogenesis, and geodynamic implication is discussed in this paper. Songka high-Mg adakites formed when subducting Neo-Tethyan oceanic slab melts were assimilated by mantle peridotite at elevated temperatures (average Ti-in-zircon temperatures of sample SK1319 are 830 °C). Low-Mg adakitic rocks exhibit markedly different geochemical characteristics than those formed in the juvenile thickened lower crust. The least-squares mass balance and trace element simulations indicate that Songka low-Mg adakitic samples were formed at a degree of 60–65% fractional crystallization of melts resembling Songka high-Mg adakites. Songka gabbroic diorites are formed in the metasomatic mantle wedge. The genetic relationship between these rocks indicates that the crust of the southern Tibet did not appear to thicken obviously during the early stage of late Cretaceous (100–90 Ma). The intensive emplacement of late Cretaceous high-Mg adakites (Mg# > 50) and mafic rocks (SiO 2 < 52%) in the southern Lhasa terrane around 95–90 Ma, together with the slow convergence velocity of the Indian-Asian continent, can be explained by the response of rapid crustal thickening and Neo-Tethyan slab rollback at 95–90 Ma. • High-Mg adakitic rocks were formed from partial melting of Neo-Tethyan slab. • Coeval low-Mg adakitic rocks were produced by fractional crystallization. • Rapid crustal growth and Neo-Tethyan slab rollback occurred at 95–90 Ma. Reconstructing the evolution of the Sumdo Paleo-Tethyan Ocean (SPTO) is important for understanding the transition from the Paleo-Tethyan system to the Neo-Tethyan system. The existence of the SPTO is inferred from the presence of an (ultra-)high pressure metamorphic belt and dismembered ophiolite bodies that separate the southern Lhasa and northern Lhasa terrane. This paper presents new geochronological and geochemical data for the Luobadui Formation in the Lhasa terrane. The geochemical difference between the Lower Luobadui volcanics and the Upper Luobadui volcanics suggests a source transition from a depleted mantle source to an enriched mantle source, which indicates continental-arc subduction. The integrated geological evidence suggests that the SPTO initially opened during the late Carboniferous (ca. 304 Ma), as verified by the earliest record of oceanic crust. Our new data for the Luobadui volcanic rocks, together with the metamorphic and sedimentary records, support northward subduction of the SPTO lithosphere beneath North Lhasa, most likely starting during the Early Permian (ca. 275 Ma) and lasting until the Middle Permian (ca. 260 Ma). The main closure of the SPTO occurred during Middle–Late Triassic (ca. 240–220 Ma), as recorded by medium-pressure metamorphism and syn -collisional magmatism. Mafic igneous rocks are volumetrically limited in collisional orogens but are significant for revealing specific geological processes. The mafic intrusive rocks in the eastern Lhasa batholiths along the Parlung fault (the easternmost branch of the Jiali fault zone), southern Tibet, are commonly regarded as the easternmost mafic components of an inferred Shiquanhe–Nam Tso–Jiali–Parlung suture zone, which is assumed to mark a back-arc oceanic basin related to the southward subduction of the Bangong-Nujiang Meso-Tethyan Ocean. However, the petrogenesis and tectonic setting of the mafic intrusive rocks have been poorly constrained. In this paper, we present petrological, geochemical and geochronological data for this mafic suite and evaluate the tectonic implications. The mafic intrusive rocks can be approximately divided into pyroxene-amphibole cumulate and medium-grained and pegmatitic hornblende gabbros that are characterized by the occurrence of very calcic plagioclase (An = 80–92) and abundant amphibole crystals, indicating an H 2 O-enriched magmatic signature. Their whole-rock compositions, which include negative Nb and Ta anomalies, also suggest a subduction-modified setting. Zircon Lu Hf isotope data show that their magmas were formed by magmatic mixing between melts derived from enriched subcontinental lithospheric mantle and liquids derived from upwelling asthenosphere. Zircon U Pb dating results reveal crystallization ages of ~114–110 Ma for this mafic suite, corresponding to the late stage of regional granitic magmatism (~135–110 Ma) that was related to the Lhasa-Qiangtang collision after the closure of the Bangong-Nujiang Meso-Tethyan Ocean. Given that coeval mafic and felsic rocks are distinctly controlled by the Parlung fault, we suggest that asthenospheric upwelling due to the break-off of the subducted Bangong-Nujiang oceanic slab not only induced partial melting of the enriched subcontinental lithospheric mantle but also resulted in regional rifting/extension and the initial development of the eastern Jiali (Parlung) fault. • Early Cretaceous mafic magmatism along the eastern Jiali fault is demonstrated. • The mafic suite marks the initial development of the eastern Jiali fault. • The active Jiali fault zone might exploit and connect the pre-existing faults. The character of arcs varies over time with significant temporal fluctuations in the quantity and spatiotemporal patterns of magmatism. However, the driving mechanisms for this episodic behavior of arcs need more constraints. This paper analyzed the published data along with our new zircon U-Pb dating and Hf isotopic and whole-rock geochemical data of plutonic rocks in the Gangdese belt in southern Tibet to explore the features, potential drivers, and tectonic implications of episodic arc activity in the Gangdese arc. A comprehensive compilation of U-Pb ages and Lu-Hf isotopic analyses of zircon grains from igneous rocks in the Gangdese belt, sedimentary rocks in trench fill sequences, forearc basins and foreland basins, and sands from modern river reveals that: 1) Gangdese arc activity was episodic during Late Cretaceous to Middle Eocene, displaying two magmatic flare-ups (ca. 100–80 and 65–45 Ma) and one magmatic lull (ca. 80–65 Ma), and 2) both flare-up magmas show relatively positive ε Hf (t) values (+5 ~ +15) indicative of juvenile sources suggesting these magmas are dominated by contributions from the depleted mantle. In contrast, the magmatic lull between these two magmatic flare-ups could be caused by flat subduction of the Neotethyan slab beneath the southern margin of the Lhasa terrane. These flare-ups likely contributed greatly to the crustal thickening of the Gangdese belt. Constraints from paleo-elevation and geochemical proxies for crustal thickness showed that the ~100–80 Ma flare-up was accompanied by the formation of a thick arc root while the ~65–45 Ma flare-up likely developed in a thinner crust without an arc root. Abstract: This paper presents the first detailed investigation on airborne trace metals and their potential major sources at Lhasa, the largest city in Tibetan Plateau (TP). The whole year PM10 samples were collected during September 2007 and August 2008. The annual average concentration of PM10 in Lhasa was 51.8±42.5μgm−3, lower than those of major Asian cities. Distinct seasonal patterns were observed in PM10 concentration, with higher concentrations in winter, and lower in summer. The mean elemental concentrations were generally comparable with other urban areas, but significantly higher than those from a remote site in TP (i.e., Nam Co). Crustal elements, including Na, Mg, Al, K, Ca, Sc, Ti, V, Mn, Fe, As and Ba, had similar seasonal patterns in PM10, while other elements, such as Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Cd, had less distinct seasonal variations, suggesting more anthropogenic inputs of the latter group. The result of principle component analysis (PCA) on trace elements demonstrated that fugitive dusts, traffic emissions and waste incineration activities were probably the major sources of anthropogenic metals in the atmosphere at Lhasa. The Pb isotopic compositions revealed that the metal was mainly originated from nature background with a minor contribution from the cement factory. The data obtained in this study can be useful for making pollution control strategies in the city, and also valuable for trace element studies in other environmental medium, such as snow, ice core, and lake sediments in the TP region. Abstract: The Lhasa terrane has long been interpreted as a simple tectonic block rifted from Gondwana during the late Paleozoic and then drifted northward before finally amalgamating with the Qiangtang terrane during the Early Cretaceous. In this paper we document Permian peraluminous granites near Pikang in the southern margin of the central Lhasa terrane, close to the recently documented Songdo eclogite of Permian age. Zircon SHRIMP and LA-ICPMS U–Pb dating for a Pikang granite sample gives an identical crystallization age of about 263 Ma and a wide age range of inherited zircons (283–2141 Ma). In situ Hf isotopic analyses for 20 zircons of 263 Ma yielded ε Hf(t) values of −4.5 to +1.9. The Pikang granites have high A/CNK values (≥1.08) and high normative corundum (1.3–2.0%), indicative of peraluminous S-type granite. They are characterized by moderately negative Eu anomalies (Eu/Eu⁎=0.48–0.61), and strongly negative Ba, Nb, Sr, P and Ti anomalies. The granites have high ε Nd(t) values (−6.4 to −6.0) and low initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios (0.7082–0.7096) relative to melts derived from mature continental crust. These rocks are interpreted to have been generated by mixing between mantle melts and their induced melting of mature crustal materials. We interpret the Pikang peraluminous granite magmatism, the regional angular unconformity between the Middle and the Upper Permian and the eclogite of the same metamorphic age (∼262 Ma) from the same geotectonic location to represent different products of a common event in time and space. We tentatively term this common event as syncollisional orogeny, i.e., “the Permian Gangdese Orogeny”. We further hypothesize that the orogeny may be genetically associated with the collision between the Lhasa terrane and the northern margin of Australia, following the closure of the Paleo-Tethyan Ocean south of the Lhasa terrane. The Lhasa-Qiangtang collision prior to the Cenozoic collision of India and Asia is a key process for the early stage of tectonic history of the Tibetan Plateau; however, when and how the Lhasa-Qiangtang collision is less well known. In this paper, we present an analysis of petrological, geochemical, Sr–Nd–Hf isotopic data, and zircon LA-ICP-MS U Pb data for the volcanic rocks from the Yunzhug area, northern Lhasa. Our new data reveal an important, previously unrecognized stage of tectono-magmatic event in northern Lhasa subterrane. Zircons from the andesites and rhyolites yield concordant ages of 120.24 ± 0.79 Ma (mean square of weighted deviates (MSWD) = 0.35) and 120.1 ± 1.1 Ma (MSWD = 1.18), respectively, which are younger than the age of Jurassic intra-oceanic magmatism and older than the 112–110 Ma Lhasa-Qiangtang collision. The Yunzhug volcanic rocks are composed of andesites and A-type rhyolites of high-K affinity. The andesites originated mainly from a mixed mantle source with variable degrees of contribution of continental crust, and the rhyolites were derived mainly from melting of lower continental crust. Addition of subducted flysch or oceanic sediments resulted in the high-K affinity. Fractional crystallization of plagioclase, K-feldspar, amphibole, and minor microlitic apatite and Fe Ti oxides minerals in the shallow level is mainly responsible for variable major and trace element contents of the andesites and rhyolites. Our results show that the early Cretaceous Yunzhug volcanic rocks can represent the early stage magmatism recording the entrance of subducted continental crust into the subduction zone, agreement with processes of arc-continent collision from intra-oceanic subduction to continental collision.
