This paper is concerned with the problem of mining social emotions from text. Recently, with the fast development of web 2.0, more and more documents are assigned by social users with emotion labels such as happiness, sadness, and surprise. Such emotions can provide a new aspect for document categorization, and therefore help online users to select related documents based on their emotional preferences. Useful as it is, the ratio with manual emotion labels is still very tiny comparing to the huge amount of web/enterprise documents. In this paper, we aim to discover the connections between social emotions and affective terms and based on which predict the social emotion from text content automatically. More specifically, we propose a joint emotion-topic model by augmenting Latent Dirichlet Allocation with an additional layer for emotion modeling. It first generates a set of latent topics from emotions, followed by generating affective terms from each topic. Experimental results on an online news collection show that the proposed model can effectively identify meaningful latent topics for each emotion. In heterogeneous cellular networks (HetNets) with macro base station (BS) and multiple small BSs (SBSs), cell association of user equipment (UE) affects UE transmission rate and network throughput. Conventional cell association rules are usually based on UE received signal-to-interference-and-noise-ratio (SINR) without being aware of other UE statistical characteristics, such as user movement and distribution. User behaviors can indeed be exploited for improving long-term network performance. In this paper, we investigate UE cell association in HetNets by exploiting both individual and clustering user behaviors with the aim to maximize long-term system throughput. We model the problem as a stochastic optimization problem, and prove that it is PSPACE-hard. For mathematical tractability, we solve the problem in two steps. In the first step, we investigate UE association for a specific SBS. We use a restless multiarmed bandit model to derive an association priority index for the SBS. In the second step, we develop an index enabled association (IDEA) policy for making the cell association decisions in general HetNets based on the indices derived in the first step. IDEA determines a set of admissible BSs for a UE based on SINR, and then associates the UE with the BS that has the smallest index in the set. We conduct simulation experiments to compare IDEA with other three cell association policies. Numerical results demonstrate the significant advantages of IDEA in typical scenarios. Heterogeneous cellular networks (HCNs) are capable of meeting the explosive mobile-traffic demands. However, the conventional base station (BS) deployment strategy is unsuitable for supporting the often unpredictable nonuniform mobile-traffic demands, as governed by the large-scale user behavior (LUB). This results in the inefficient exploitation of the system's resources. In this paper, we develop an analytical framework for characterizing the achievable energy-spectral-efficiency (ESE) of HCNs, which explicitly quantifies the relationship between the network's ESE and the randomly time-varying LUBs as well as other network deployment parameters. Specifically, we model the quantitative impact of the geographical mobile-traffic intensity, the load migration factor, the users’ required service rate and the per-tier BS densities on the achievable ESE of the network, while considering the area-spectral-efficiency requirements. Importantly, a closed-form ESE expression is derived, which enables us to explicitly analyze the properties of the network's ESE. Furthermore, the optimal LUB-aware BS deployment strategy is proposed for maximizing the ESE under specific outage constraints. Using numerical simulations, we verify the accuracy of the analytical ESE expression and quantify the impact of several relevant system parameters on the achievable ESE. Furthermore, we evaluate the achievable ESE performance of the network under diverse time-varying LUB scenarios. Our work, therefore, provides valuable insights for designing future ultradense HCNs. Modeling the process of information diffusion is a challenging problem. Although numerous attempts have been made in order to solve this problem, very few studies are actually able to simulate and predict temporal dynamics of the diffusion process. In this paper, we propose a novel information diffusion model, namely GT model, which treats the nodes of a network as intelligent and rational agents and then calculates their corresponding payoffs, given different choices to make strategic decisions. By introducing time-related payoffs based on the diffusion data, the proposed GT model can be used to predict whether or not the user's behaviors will occur in a specific time interval. The user’s payoff can be divided into two parts: social payoff from the user’s social contacts and preference payoff from the user’s idiosyncratic preference. We here exploit the global influence of the user and the social influence between any two users to accurately calculate the social payoff. In addition, we develop a new method of presenting social influence that can fully capture the temporal dynamics of social influence. Experimental results from two different datasets, Sina Weibo and Flickr demonstrate the rationality and effectiveness of the proposed prediction method with different evaluation metrics. In this paper, we study distributed opportunistic scheduling (DOS) in an ad hoc network, where many links contend for the same channel using random access. In such a network, DOS involves a process of joint channel probing and distributed scheduling. Due to channel fading, the link condition corresponding to a successful channel probing could be either good or poor. In the latter case, further channel probing, although at the cost of additional delay, may lead to better channel conditions and hence yield higher throughput. The desired tradeoff boils down to judiciously choosing the optimal stopping rule for channel probing and distributed scheduling. In this paper, we pursue a rigorous characterization of the optimal strategies from two perspectives, namely, a network-centric perspective and a user-centric perspective. We first consider DOS from a network-centric point of view, where links cooperate to maximize the overall network throughput. Using optimal stopping theory, we show that the optimal scheme for DOS turns out to be a pure threshold policy, where the rate threshold can be obtained by solving a fixed-point equation. We further devise iterative algorithms for computing the threshold. We also generalize the studies to take into account fairness requirements. Next, we explore DOS from a user-centric perspective, where each link seeks to maximize its own throughput. We treat the problem of threshold selection across different links as a noncooperative game. We explore the existence and uniqueness of the Nash equilibrium, and show that the Nash equilibrium can be approached by the best response strategy. Since the best response strategy requires message passing from neighboring nodes, we then develop an online stochastic iterative algorithm based on local observations only, and establish its convergence to the Nash equilibrium. Because there is an efficiency loss at the Nash equilibrium, we then study pricing-based mechanisms to mitigate the loss. Our results reveal that rich physical layer/MAC layer (PHY/MAC) diversities are available for exploitation in ad hoc networks. Existing methods have addressed the issue of handling each individual skyline query performed on data sets with partially ordered domains. However, it is still very challenging to process such queries for on-line applications with low response time. In this paper, we introduce a cache-based framework, called CSS, for further reducing the query processing time to support high-responsive applications. Skyline queries that were previously processed with user preferences similar to those of the current query contribute useful candidate result points. Hence, the answered queries are cached with both their results and user preferences such that the query processor can rapidly retrieve the result for a new query only from the result sets of selected queries with compatible user preferences. We introduce a similarity measure that establishes the level of similarity between the user preferences of a new query and a cached query; hence the system can start with the most similar candidates. Furthermore, if a new query is only partially answerable from the cache, then the query processor utilizes the partial result sets and performs less expensive constraint skyline queries guided by violated preferences. Furthermore, we introduce two access methods for cached queries indexed by their user preferences to only access a set of relevant cached queries for similarity measures. Exponential growth of information generated by online social networks demands effective and scalable recommender systems to give useful results. Traditional techniques become unqualified because they ignore social relation data; existing social recommendation approaches consider social network structure, but social contextual information has not been fully considered. It is significant and challenging to fuse social contextual factors which are derived from users’ motivation of social behaviors into social recommendation. In this paper, we investigate the social recommendation problem on the basis of psychology and sociology studies, which exhibit two important factors: individual preference and interpersonal influence. We first present the particular importance of these two factors in online behavior prediction. Then we propose a novel probabilistic matrix factorization method to fuse them in latent space. We further provide a scalable algorithm which can incrementally process the large scale data. We conduct experiments on both Facebook style bidirectional and Twitter style unidirectional social network data sets. The U.S. legislation at both the federal and state levels mandates certain organizations to inform customers about information uses and disclosures. Such disclosures are typically accomplished through privacy policies, both online and offline. Unfortunately, the policies are not easy to comprehend, and, as a result, online consumers frequently do not read the policies provided at healthcare Web sites. Because these policies are often required by law, they should be clear so that consumers are likely to read them and to ensure that consumers can comprehend these policies. This, in turn, may increase consumer trust and encourage consumers to feel more comfortable when interacting with online organizations. In this paper, we present results of an empirical study, involving 993 Internet users, which compared various ways to present privacy policy information to online consumers. Our findings suggest that users perceive typical, paragraph-form policies to be more secure than other forms of policy representation, yet user comprehension of such paragraph-form policies is poor as compared to other policy representations. The results of this study can help managers create more trustworthy policies, aid compliance officers in detecting deceptive organizations, and serve legislative bodies by providing tangible evidence as to the ineffectiveness of current privacy policies. Contrary to the idealistic notion that human-computer interfaces are designed to actively help users accomplish their goals, millions of people who use the World Wide Web every day encounter a wide variety of interfaces that aggressively divert users toward the goals of the designer and away from those of the user. We label such strategies ?adversarial interface design.? Techniques of adversarial design include coercion, confusion, distraction, exploiting errors, forced work, interruption, manipulating navigation, obfuscation, restricting functionality, shock, and trickery [10]. See Figure 1 for several illustrations of these techniques. This study examines user perceptions that play a critical role in driving error reporting system (ERS) usage intentions. Building on the technology acceptance model (TAM) and literature on donation behavior, we theorize that value compatibility, role transparency, process transparency, and work interruption influence ERS usefulness and ERS usage intentions. Results show that congruence with user's value system, role transparency, and process transparency are important determinants of ERS usefulness. A direct effect of value compatibility, process transparency, and work interruption on intention to use the ERS is also observed. More importantly, our study elaborates on the applicability of TAM and its variables beyond their originally defined constraint. The article offers information on studies conducted in order to determine data-gathering behavior of computer users while browsing in 3-dimensional (3D) computer-aided design (CAD) repositories. One of the studies revealed that an appropriate mapping among the interface, the task, and the user can help in reducing mental workload. In the research, emphasis has been given on document or image retrieval. Experiments with computer users demonstrated that the 3D-navigation-based search pattern allows more rapid and accurate retrieval as compared to the traditional scroll-list pattern.

The article focuses on the spatial context of computing and a study of laptop use in the United States. Examples are given to illustrate the work habits of employees at a think tank in California, students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the author's personal experience in New York. Although Wi-Fi networks are ubiquitous, research indicates that people are not freely mobile because they prefer to do their computing in an environment where their work needs are met--which makes them more dependent on constant connectivity.
