The symmetric multi-scroll strange attractor has shown great potential in chaos-based applications due to its high complexity in phase space. Here, the approach of symmetrization is employed for attractor doubling to generate pseudo-multi-scroll attractors in a discrete map, where a carefully selected offset constant is the key to organizing coexisting attractors. By choosing the Hénon map to generate the pseudo-multi-scroll attractor and implementing the digital circuit on a microcontroller, this study fills a significant gap in the research on discrete chaotic systems. The complexity performance is further validated using a pseudo-random number generator, demonstrating substantial academic contributions to the field of chaos theory. Additionally, a pseudo-multi-scroll attractor-based squirrel search algorithm is first developed, showcasing its practical application in mobile robot path planning. The symmetry of neuron discharging has some relationship with the electrophysiological characteristics and dynamic behavior of a neuron, and has a close relation with the symmetry of ion channels, current balance, neuron type, synaptic transmission, and network effects. Among them, the feedback and interactions in the network have a particularly direct impact on the symmetrical discharge of a neuron element. This work introduces a memristor as a synapse into a neuron cell, taking the membrane potential back to ion channels, and therefore various symmetric firing behaviors of Hindmarsh–Rose (HR) neurons are observed, including chaos and various periodic firings. By further adjusting the feedback, coexisting symmetrical discharge of the neuron is achieved. Furthermore, the impact of frequency variations on the memristor synapse is analyzed, and thus the operating regimes of memristor and resistor are classified and discussed. Circuit simulations prove the neural chaotic firings along with their symmetrized discharging processes, demonstrating the effectiveness of symmetrical control of chaotic discharge. This study investigated the milling of SiCp/Al composite materials using Polycrystalline Diamond (PCD) tools under various machining conditions, including dry cutting conditions, supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO2) conditions, supercritical carbon dioxide cooling with minimum quantity lubrication (SCCO2-MQL) conditions, ultrasonic vibration conditions, and supercritical carbon dioxide cooling with minimum quantity lubrication combined with ultrasonic vibration conditions. The objective was to compare the surface roughness and morphology of the materials under different machining conditions. Furthermore, under dry cutting conditions and SCCO2-MQL combined with ultrasonic vibration, the effects of different milling parameters on the surface roughness and morphology of SiCp/Al composite materials were investigated through a univariate experiment. Microhardness tests were carried out on the machined workpieces to explore the influence of process conditions and milling parameters on work hardening. The experimental results indicate that among all the tested machining conditions, the SCCO2-MQL in combination with the ultrasonic vibration process significantly reduced the surface roughness of the material. When the milling speed was increased from 40 m/min to 120 m/min, both the surface roughness and the degree of work hardening first increased and then decreased. As the feed rate or cutting depth increased, the degree of work hardening also increased. Therefore, under SCCO2-MQL combined with ultrasonic vibration conditions, it is recommended to use a milling speed of more than 60 m/min and avoid using high feed rates and cutting depths in order to optimize the machining performance. Autophagy, a conserved cellular recycling process, plays a crucial role in maintaining homeostasis under stress conditions. It also regulates the development and virulence of numerous filamentous fungi. In this study, we investigated the specific function of ATG8, a reliable autophagic marker, in the opportunistic pathogen Aspergillus flavus. To investigate the role of atg8 in A. flavus, the deletion and complemented mutants of atg8 were generated according to the homologous recombination principle. Deletion of atg8 showed a significant decrease in conidiation, spore germination, and sclerotia formation compared to the WT and atg8C strains. Additionally, aflatoxin production was found severely impaired in the ∆atg8 mutant. The stress assays demonstrated that ATG8 was important for A. flavus response to oxidative stress. The fluorescence microscopy showed increased levels of reactive oxygen species in the ∆atg8 mutant cells, and the transcriptional result also indicated that genes related to the antioxidant system were significantly reduced in the ∆atg8 mutant. We further found that ATG8 participated in regulating the pathogenicity of A. flavus on crop seeds. These results revealed the biological role of ATG8 in A. flavus, which might provide a potential target for the control of A. flavus and AFB1 biosynthesis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Research on parental burnout has focused more on its antecedents than on its consequences. Burned-out parents may experience a series of behavioral changes, negatively affecting their children's physical and mental development. This study examined the effects of primary caregivers' parental burnout on adolescents' development and the mediating role of negative parenting styles. This study used a time-lagged design, and data were collected at three different time points. Adolescents were asked to identify their primary caregivers, and parents were asked whether they were the primary caregivers of their children. Thereafter, paired data from the children and primary caregivers were collected. A total of 317 junior middle school students (178 boys, Mage = 14.20 ± 0.8 years) and primary caregivers (71 fathers, Mage = 42.20 ± 4.53 years) from Henan province participated. Primary caregivers' parental burnout was positively associated with negative parenting styles, and negative parenting styles mediated the relationship between parental burnout and adolescent development. From the perspective of prevention-focused interventions, it is necessary to focus on preventing the occurrence of parental burnout. The topology optimization of dynamic stress constraints is highly nonlinear and singular and has been little studied. Dynamic stress based on progressive structural optimization is only available by applying the modal iteration method, but due to the nonlinear limitations of the modal superposition method, there is an urgent need to develop a progressive structural optimization method based on dynamic stress sensitivity under direct integration. This method is for the dynamic stresses under non-periodic loading with iterative cycle updating variations. This article proposes a topological optimization method of continuum structures with stress constraints under an aperiodic load based on the Bi-directional Evolutionary Structural Optimization Method (BESO). First, the P-norm condensation function was used to obtain the global stress to approximate maximum stress. By introducing the Lagrange multiplier, the design goal was to increase the P-norm stress on the basis of the smallest volume. After that, based on the dynamic finite element theory, the sensitivity of each cell formula of the objective function and the constraint conditions of the design variables were strictly derived. Then, the performance evaluation index was put forward based on volume and stress, and the convergence criterion based on the performance evaluation index was defined. This method solves the topology optimization problem of stress constraints under a non-periodic load and the topology optimization problem of stress constraints under a periodic load, such as a simple harmonic load. Human detection is the task of locating all instances of human beings present in an image, which has a wide range of applications across various fields, including search and rescue, surveillance, and autonomous driving. The rapid advancement of computer vision and deep learning technologies has brought significant improvements in human detection. However, for more advanced applications like healthcare, human–computer interaction, and scene understanding, it is crucial to obtain information beyond just the localization of humans. These applications require a deeper understanding of human behavior and state to enable effective and safe interactions with humans and the environment. This study presents a comprehensive benchmark, the Common Human Postures (CHP) dataset, aimed at promoting a more informative and more encouraging task beyond mere human detection. The benchmark dataset comprises a diverse collection of images, featuring individuals in different environments, clothing, and occlusions, performing a wide range of postures and activities. The benchmark aims to enhance research in this challenging task by designing novel and precise methods specifically for it. The CHP dataset consists of 5250 human images collected from different scenes, annotated with bounding boxes for seven common human poses. Using this well-annotated dataset, we have developed two baseline detectors, namely CHP-YOLOF and CHP-YOLOX, building upon two identity-preserved human posture detectors: IPH-YOLOF and IPH-YOLOX. We evaluate the performance of these baseline detectors through extensive experiments. The results demonstrate that these baseline detectors effectively detect human postures on the CHP dataset. The development and change in the other-race effect (ORE) in different age groups have always been a focus of researchers. Previous studies have mainly focused on the influence of maturity of life (from infancy to early adulthood) on the ORE, while few researchers have explored the ORE in older people. Therefore, this study used behavioral and eye movement techniques to explore the influence of age on the ORE and the visual scanning pattern of Han subjects recognizing own- and other-ethnicity faces. All participants were asked to complete a study-recognition task for faces, and the behavioral results showed that the ORE of elderly Han subjects was significantly lower than that of young Han subjects. The results of eye movement showed that there were significant differences in the visual scanning pattern of young subjects in recognizing the faces of individuals of their own ethnicity and other ethnicities, which were mainly reflected in the differences in looking at the nose and mouth, while the differences were reduced in the elderly subjects. The elderly subjects used similar scanning patterns to recognize the own- and other-ethnicity faces. This indicates that as age increases, the ORE of older people in recognizing faces of those from different ethnic groups becomes weaker, and elderly subjects have more similar visual scanning patterns in recognizing faces of their own and other ethnicities. Prospective memory (PM) refers to the ability to remember to perform a planned event or activity at a specific time or situation in the future. Implementation intentions can promote a connection between PM cues and intended actions, thus improving an individual's PM performance. However, this simple and effective encoding strategy may also have negative effects. For example, an implementation intention may result in PM commission errors that occur when an individual makes a false PM response to repeated PM cues that are no longer relevant as the PM task has been completed. Existing studies have explored the effect of implementation intentions on PM commission errors under low cognitive load. However, the role of implementation intentions in promoting linkages between PM cues and actions tends to disintegrate under high cognitive loads. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the effect of implementation intentions on PM commission errors under different cognitive load conditions. In this study, 58 college students participated in a mixed experimental design of 2 (encoding methods: implementation intention, standard) × 2 (cognitive load conditions: low, high). The results showed that implementation intentions promoted PM commission errors under the low-cognitive-load condition only, and there was no difference in the performance of ongoing tasks between the implementation intention encoding and the standard encoding conditions. However, individuals in the implementation intention condition reacted more slowly when encountering previous PM cues. The results suggest that the effect of implementation intentions on PM commission errors relies upon automated processing as a whole. However, individuals in the implementation intention condition required more attentional resources to suppress the no-longer-relevant intended actions when previous PM cues appeared, supporting the dual-mechanism theory. The S2 subunit serves a crucial role in infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) infection, particularly in facilitating membrane fusion. Using reverse genetic techniques, mutant strains of the S2 locus exhibited substantially different syncytium-forming abilities in chick embryonic kidney cells. To determine the precise formation mechanism of syncytium, we demonstrated the co-ordinated role of Abl2 and its mediated cytoskeletal regulatory pathway within the S2 subunit. Using a combination of fluorescence quantification, RNA silencing, and protein profiling techniques, the functional role of S2 subunits in IBV-infected cells was exhaustively determined. Our findings imply that Abl2 is not the primary cytoskeletal regulator, the viral S2 component is involved in indirect regulation, and the three different viral strains activate various cytoskeletal regulatory pathways through Abl2. CRK, CRKL, ABI1, NCKAP1, and ENAH also play a role in cytoskeleton regulation. Our research provides a point of reference for the development of an intracellular regulatory network for the S2 subunit and a foundation for the rational design of antiviral drug targets against Abl2. The lithology and lithofacies assemblage of shale are highly complex and heterogeneous in the continental shale formations due to rapid changes in the sedimentary environment and source material, complicating the evaluation of shale oil enrichment areas, such as the member 3 of the Shahejie Formation in the Qikou sag, Bohaibay Basin, China. We used core observations and descriptions of well F39 × 1 and performed X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption analysis, and nuclear magnetic resonance analysis to investigate the shale lithofacies characteristics and types in member 3 of the Shahejie Formation, and their effects on shale oil enrichment. The results showed the following. (1) The lithofacies are divided into four types according to the shale's laminar structure, lithological characteristics, mineral composition, and organic matter content: thin laminar shale, thick laminar shale, massive mudstone, and argillaceous siltstone. These are divided into six subcategories. Each lithofacies has thin vertical layers. (2) The thin and thick laminar shale layers have favorable conditions for shale oil enrichment, such as a high total organic carbon content (TOC) (1.1–1.6%), many micropores (with the diameter of 0.5–2 µm) and fissures, a high residual hydrocarbon content (1.0–2.3 mg/g), and a good source-reservoir relationship, making them suitable for shale oil exploration. (3) The degree of lamina development influences the organic matter and residual hydrocarbon contents, the number of micropores, and the degree of shale oil enrichment. The offset as the average value of a variable plays an important role in signal processing and system design. Offset boosting can be realized by a non-bifurcation parameter or an initial condition. In this work, symmetric coexisting attractors with opposite polarity and a 2D hyperchaotic map with multiple modes of offset boosting are proposed, where the offset can be controlled both by the initial condition and system parameter, and as a result, multiple alternatives of offset boosting and offset competition show up. Consequently, the final offset is determined eventually by the balance of two factors. The theoretical findings are verified through the hardware experiment based on the STM32. Root rot caused by Fusarium solani is one of the major postharvest diseases limiting sweet potato production. Here, antifungal activity and the action mode of perillaldehyde (PAE) against F. solani were investigated. A PAE concentration of 0.15 mL/L in air (mL/L air) markedly inhibited the mycelial growth, spore reproduction and spore viability of F. solani. A PAE vapor of 0.25 mL/L in air could control the F. solani development in sweet potatoes during storage for 9 days at 28 °C. Moreover, the results of a flow cytometer demonstrated that PAE drove an increase in cell membrane permeability, reduction of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) and accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in F. solani spores. Subsequently, a fluorescence microscopy assay demonstrated that PAE caused serious damage to the cell nuclei in F. solani by inducing chromatin condensation. Further, the spread plate method showed that the spore survival rate was negatively correlated with the level of ROS and nuclear damage, of which the results indicated that PAE-driven ROS accumulation plays a critical role in contributing to cell death in F. solani. In all, the results revealed a specific antifungal mechanism of PAE against F. solani, and suggest that PAE could be a useful fumigant for controlling the postharvest diseases of sweet potatoes. The correlation between cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) and the outcomes of acute ischemic stroke (AIS) patients after endovascular therapy (EVT) remains elusive. We aimed to investigate the effect of combined white matter hyperintensities (WMH) and enlarged perivascular spaces (EPVS) as detected in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at baseline on clinical outcomes in patients with AIS who underwent EVT. AIS patients that experienced EVT were retrospectively analyzed in this single-center study. Using MRIs taken prior to EVT, we rated WMH and EPVS as the burden of CSVD and dichotomized the population into two groups: absent-to-moderate and severe. Neurological outcome was assessed at day 90 with a modified Rankin Scale (mRS). Symptomatic intracerebral hemorrhage (sICH), early neurological deterioration (END), malignant cerebral edema (MCE), and hospital death were secondary outcomes. Of the 100 patients (64.0% male; mean age 63.71 ± 11.79 years), periventricular WMHs (28%), deep WMHs (41%), EPVS in basal ganglia (53%), and EPVS in centrum semiovale (73%) were observed. In addition, 69% had an absent-to-moderate total CSVD burden and 31.0% had a severe burden. The severe CSVD was not substantially linked to either the primary or secondary outcomes. Patients with AIS who underwent EVT had an elevated risk (OR: 7.89, 95% CI: 1.0, 62.53) of END if they also had EPVS. When considering WMH and EPVS together as a CSVD burden, there seemed to be no correlation between severe CSVD burden and sICH, END, or MCE following EVT for AIS patients. The new energy vehicle is a robust measure to solve the problem of global warming. However, the new energy vehicle generally has the disadvantages of short mileage and difficulty in finding public chargers. The combination of wind energy harvest and new energy vehicle can be conducive to the promotion of the new energy vehicle. This paper proposes a novel adjustable Savonius vertical axis wind turbine (SVAWT). It contains three parts: an energy absorption module, an energy recovery module, and an energy conversion module. The energy absorption module includes four blades with staggered distribution in two layers. The overlap ratio of the blades can be adjusted by the wind speed, which can ensure the SVAWT has a higher energy transfer efficiency. The energy recovery module adjusts the overlap ratio of the blades without interruption by utilizing the self-rotation and the orbital revolution of the gears. The energy conversion module converts mechanical energy into electric energy and supplies power for the vehicle after adjustment by the voltage regulator module. Based on actual operating data, it can be found that the variation trend of power of the blades absorbing is consistent with wind speed and increases with the wind speed. Under four actual operating conditions, the root mean square value of the blades absorbing power are 7.0 W, 7.1 W, 3.9 W, and 5.1 W, respectively. These results reveal that the proposed novel adjustable SVAWT has high recovery power potential and can provide a valuable solution to the practical applications of wind energy harvesting. The fluxgate magnetometer has the advantages of having a small volume and low power consumption and being light weight and is commonly used to detect weak magnetic targets, including ferrous metals, unexploded bombs (UXOs), and underground corrosion pipelines. However, the detection accuracy of the fluxgate magnetometer is affected by its own error. To obtain more accurate detection data, the sensor must be error-corrected before application. Previous researchers easily fell into the local minimum when solving error parameters. In this paper, the error correction method was proposed to tackle the problem, which combines the Dragonfly algorithm (DA) and the Levenberg–Marquardt (LM) algorithm, thereby solving the problem of the LM algorithm and improving the accuracy of solving error parameters. Firstly, we analyzed the error sources of the three-axis magnetic sensor and established the error model. Then, the error parameters were solved by using the LM algorithm and DA–LM algorithm, respectively. In addition, by comparing the results of the two methods, we found that the error parameters solved by using the DA–LM algorithm were more accurate. Finally, the magnetic measurement data were corrected. The simulation results show that the DA–LM algorithm can accurately solve the error parameters of the triaxial magnetic sensor, proving the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm. The experimental results show that the difference between the corrected and the ideal total value was decreased from 300 nT to 5 nT, which further verified the effectiveness of the DA–LM algorithm. Biological structures have excellent mechanical performances including lightweight, high stiffness, etc. However, these are difficult to apply directly to some given complex structures, such as automobile frame, control arm, etc. In this study, a novel bionic design method for skeleton structures with complex features is proposed by the bio-inspired idea of "main-branch and sub-branch". The envelope model of a given part is established by analyzing the structural functions and working conditions, and the load path is extracted by the load-transferred law as the structural main-branch. Then, the selection criterion of bionic prototype is established from three aspects: load similarity, structural similarity and manufacturability. The cross-sections with high similarities are selected as the structural sub-branch. Finally, the multi-objective size optimization is carried out and a new model is established. The bionic design of a control arm is carried out by the method: structural main-branch is obtained by the load path analysis and structural sub-branch is occupied by the fish-bone structure. The design result shows that the structural stiffness is increased by 62.3%, while the weight is reduced by 24.75%. Origination of new genes are of inherent interest of evolutionary geneticists for decades, but few studies have addressed the general pattern in a fish lineage. Using our recent released whole genome data of flatfishes, which evolved one of the most specialized body plans in vertebrates, we identified 1541 (6.9% of the starry flounder genes) flatfish-lineage-specific genes. The origination pattern of these flatfish new genes is largely similar to those observed in other vertebrates, as shown by the proportion of DNA-mediated duplication (1317; 85.5%), RNA-mediated duplication (retrogenes; 96; 6.2%), and de novo–origination (128; 8.3%). The emergence rate of species-specific genes is 32.1 per Mya and the whole average level rate for the flatfish-lineage-specific genes is 20.9 per Mya. A large proportion (31.4%) of these new genes have been subjected to selection, in contrast to the 4.0% in primates, while the old genes remain quite similar (66.4% vs. 65.0%). In addition, most of these new genes (70.8%) are found to be expressed, indicating their functionality. This study not only presents one example of systematic new gene identification in a teleost taxon based on comprehensive phylogenomic data, but also shows that new genes may play roles in body planning. Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) is a commercially relevant food crop with high demand worldwide. This species belongs to the Convolvulaceae family and is native to tropical and subtropical regions. Storage temperature and time can adversely affect tuberous roots' quality and nutritional profile. Therefore, this study evaluates the effect of storage parameters using physicochemical and transcriptome analyses. Freshly harvested tuberous roots (Xingxiang) were stored at 13 °C (control) or 5 °C (cold storage, CS) for 21 d. The results from chilling injury (CI) evaluation demonstrated that there was no significant difference in appearance, internal color, weight, and relative conductivity between tuberous roots stored at 13 and 5 °C for 14 d and indicated that short-term CS for 14 d promoted the accumulation of sucrose, chlorogenic acid, and amino acids with no CI symptoms development. This, in turn, improved sweetness, antioxidant capacity, and nutritional value of the tuberous roots. Transcriptome analyses revealed that several key genes associated with sucrose, chlorogenic acid, and amino acid biosynthesis were upregulated during short-term CS, including sucrose synthase, sucrose phosphate synthase, phenylalanine ammonia-lyase, 4-coumarate-CoA ligase, hydroxycinnamoyl-CoA quinate hydroxycinnamoyltransferase, serine hydroxymethyltransferase, alanine aminotransferase, arogenate dehydrogenase, and prephenate dehydratase. These results indicated that storage at 5 °C for 14 d could improve the nutritional quality and palatability of sweet potato tuberous roots without compromising their freshness. ZY-1 02D is China's first civil hyperspectral (HS) operational satellite, developed independently and successfully launched in 2019. It can collect HS data with a spatial resolution of 30 m, 166 spectral bands, a spectral range of 400~2500 nm, and a swath width of 60 km. Its competitive advantages over other on-orbit or planned satellites are its high spectral resolution and large swath width. Unfortunately, the relatively low spatial resolution may limit its applications. As a result, fusing ZY-1 02D HS data with high-spatial-resolution multispectral (MS) data is required to improve spatial resolution while maintaining spectral fidelity. This paper conducted a comprehensive evaluation study on the fusion of ZY-1 02D HS data with ZY-1 02D MS data (10-m spatial resolution), based on visual interpretation and quantitative metrics. Datasets from Hebei, China, were used in this experiment, and the performances of six common data fusion methods, namely Gram-Schmidt (GS), High Pass Filter (HPF), Nearest-Neighbor Diffusion (NND), Modified Intensity-Hue-Saturation (IHS), Wavelet Transform (Wavelet), and Color Normalized Sharping (Brovey), were compared. The experimental results show that: (1) HPF and GS methods are better suited for the fusion of ZY-1 02D HS Data and MS Data, (2) IHS and Brovey methods can well improve the spatial resolution of ZY-1 02D HS data but introduce spectral distortion, and (3) Wavelet and NND results have high spectral fidelity but poor spatial detail representation. Incomplete partition type III (IP-III) is a relatively rare inner ear malformation that has been associated with a POU3F4 gene mutation. The IP-III anomaly is mainly characterized by incomplete separation of the modiolus of the cochlea from the internal auditory canal. We describe a 71-year-old woman with profound sensorineural hearing loss diagnosed with an IP-III of the cochlea that underwent cochlear implantation. Via targeted sequencing with a non-syndromic gene panel, we identified a heterozygous c.934G > C p. (Ala31Pro) pathogenic variant in the POU3F4 gene that has not been reported previously. IP-III of the cochlea is challenging for cochlear implant surgery for two main reasons: liquor cerebrospinalis gusher and electrode misplacement. Surgically, it may be better to opt for a shorter array because it is less likely for misplacement with the electrode in a false route. Secondly, the surgeon has to consider the insertion angles of cochlear access very strictly to avoid misplacement along the inner ear canal. Acute aortic dissection is one of the most severe vascular diseases. The molecular mechanisms of aortic expansion and dissection are unclear. Clinical studies have found that statins play a protective role in aortic dissection development and therapy; however, the mechanism of statins' effects on the aorta is unknown. The Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) dataset GSE52093, GSE2450and GSE8686 were analyzed, and genes expressed differentially between aortic dissection samples and normal samples were determined using the Networkanalyst and iDEP tools. Weight gene correlation network analysis (WGCNA), functional annotation, pathway enrichment analysis, and the analysis of the regional variations of genomic features were then performed. We found that the minichromosome maintenance proteins (MCMs), a family of proteins targeted by statins, were upregulated in dissected aortic wall tissues and play a central role in cell-cycle and mitosis regulation in aortic dissection patients. In present seismic exploration wireless sensor systems with large acquisition channels, it is difficult to achieve a high data rate, high reliability and long distance in wireless data transmission simultaneously. In this paper, a wireless seismic exploration system using a dual-layer network is proposed. The dual-layer network is designed based on Wi-Fi and LTE, so that long-distance high-rate seismic data transmission with a high reliability can be achieved. In the proposed system, the sensor array is composed of two kinds of nodes, the gateway node and the collecting node. Based on the proposed nodes, collecting node positioning, seismic data acquisition, seismic local data storage and quasi real-time remote seismic data transmission can be realized. Reliability mechanisms have been put forward to deal with the exceptions. An experiment was carried out to test the data transmission efficiency of the proposed system. The results show that the seismic exploration wireless sensor system with a dual-layer network structure can achieve quasi real-time remote seismic data transmission with no packet loss. Lagerstroemia indica is an important ornamental tree worldwide. The development of cultivars with colorful leaves and increased ornamental value represents one of the current main research topics. We investigated the anthocyanin profiles in two contrasting cultivars for leaf color phenotypes and explored the underlying molecular basis. Both cultivars display purple-red young leaves (Stage 1), and when the leaves mature (Stage 2), they turn green in HD (Lagerstroemia Dynamite) but remain unchanged in ZD (Lagerstroemia Ebony Embers). Seven different anthocyanins were detected, and globally, the leaves of ZD contained higher levels of anthocyanins than those of HD at the two stages with the most pronounced difference observed at Stage 2. Transcriptome sequencing revealed that in contrast to HD, ZD tends to keep a higher activity level of key genes involved in the flavonoid–anthocyanin biosynthesis pathways throughout the leaf developmental stages in order to maintain the synthesis, accumulation, and modification of anthocyanins. By applying gene co-expression analysis, we detected 19 key MYB regulators were co-expressed with the flavonoid–anthocyanin biosynthetic genes and were found strongly down-regulated in HD. This study lays the foundation for the artificial manipulation of the anthocyanin biosynthesis in order to create new L. indica cultivars with colorful leaves and increased ornamental value.
