To achieve clinical impact in daily oncological practice, emerging AI-based cancer imaging research needs to have clearly defined medical focus, AI methods, and outcomes to be estimated. AI-supported cancer imaging should predict major relevant clinical endpoints, aiming to extract associations and draw inferences in a fair, robust, and trustworthy way. AI-assisted solutions as medical devices, developed using multicenter heterogeneous datasets, should be targeted to have an impact on the clinical care pathway. When designing an AI-based research study in oncologic imaging, ensuring clinical impact in AI solutions requires careful consideration of key aspects, including target population selection, sample size definition, standards, and common data elements utilization, balanced dataset splitting, appropriate validation methodology, adequate ground truth, and careful selection of clinical endpoints. Endpoints may be pathology hallmarks, disease behavior, treatment response, or patient prognosis. Ensuring ethical, safety, and privacy considerations are also mandatory before clinical validation is performed. The Artificial Intelligence for Health Imaging (AI4HI) Clinical Working Group has discussed and present in this paper some indicative Machine Learning (ML) enabled decision-support solutions currently under research in the AI4HI projects, as well as the main considerations and requirements that AI solutions should have from a clinical perspective, which can be adopted into clinical practice. In daily clinical practice, clinicians integrate available data to ascertain the diagnostic and prognostic probability of a disease or clinical outcome for their patients. For patients with suspected or known cardiovascular disease, several anatomical and functional imaging techniques are commonly performed to aid this endeavor, including coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) and nuclear cardiology imaging. Continuous improvement in positron emission tomography (PET), single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), and CT hardware and software has resulted in improved diagnostic performance and wide implementation of these imaging techniques in daily clinical practice. However, the human ability to interpret, quantify, and integrate these data sets is limited. The identification of novel markers and application of machine learning (ML) algorithms, including deep learning (DL) to cardiovascular imaging techniques will further improve diagnosis and prognostication for patients with cardiovascular diseases. The goal of this position paper of the European Association of Nuclear Medicine (EANM) and the European Association of Cardiovascular Imaging (EACVI) is to provide an overview of the general concepts behind modern machine learning-based artificial intelligence, highlights currently prefered methods, practices, and computational models, and proposes new strategies to support the clinical application of ML in the field of cardiovascular imaging using nuclear cardiology (hybrid) and CT techniques. In recent years, there has been a dramatic increase in research papers about machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence in radiology. With so many papers around, it is of paramount importance to make a proper scientific quality assessment as to their validity, reliability, effectiveness, and clinical applicability. Due to methodological complexity, the papers on ML in radiology are often hard to evaluate, requiring a good understanding of key methodological issues. In this review, we aimed to guide the radiology community about key methodological aspects of ML to improve their academic reading and peer-review experience. Key aspects of ML pipeline were presented within four broad categories: study design, data handling, modelling, and reporting. Sixteen key methodological items and related common pitfalls were reviewed with a fresh perspective: database size, robustness of reference standard, information leakage, feature scaling, reliability of features, high dimensionality, perturbations in feature selection, class balance, bias-variance trade-off, hyperparameter tuning, performance metrics, generalisability, clinical utility, comparison with traditional tools, data sharing, and transparent reporting. Social media have undoubtedly changed our ways of living. Their presence concerns an increasing number of users (over 4,74 billion) and pervasively expands in the most diverse areas of human life. Marketing, education, news, data, and sociality are just a few of the many areas in which social media play now a central role. Recently, some attention toward the link between social media and political participation has emerged. Works in the field of artificial intelligence have already pointed out that there is a close link between the use of machine learning algorithms in social media and possible epistemic isolation, which could lead to political radicalization. The idea supporting this paper is that artificial intelligence for social media can actively put users’ deliberative capacity at risk and foster political extremism. To prove these claims, I proceed along two lines of inquiry. First, I focus on filter bubbles, namely the result of selections made by algorithms that recommend contents that meet users’ expectations and opinions. To analyze this phenomenon, I refer to the Deweyan model of experience. Second, I connect the filter bubbles problem to the Deweyan idea of deliberative and participatory democracy and Nussbaum’s concept of political compassion. The purpose of this paper is to provide a philosophical foundation that can both (1) effectively serve as a method for analyzing machine learning algorithms and their potential problems in relation to political extremism, and (2) be adopted as a standard to counter the danger of extremism associated with social media experience. For years, the number of opaque algorithmic decision-making systems (ADM systems) with a large impact on society has been increasing: e.g., systems that compute decisions about future recidivism of criminals, credit worthiness, or the many small decision computing systems within social networks that create rankings, provide recommendations, or filter content. Concerns that such a system makes biased decisions can be difficult to investigate: be it by people affected, NGOs, stakeholders, governmental testing and auditing authorities, or other external parties. Scientific testing and auditing literature rarely focuses on the specific needs for such investigations and suffers from ambiguous terminologies. With this paper, we aim to support this investigation process by collecting, explaining, and categorizing methods of testing for bias, which are applicable to black-box systems, given that inputs and respective outputs can be observed. For this purpose, we provide a taxonomy that can be used to select suitable test methods adapted to the respective situation. This taxonomy takes multiple aspects into account, for example the effort to implement a given test method, its technical requirement (such as the need of ground truth) and social constraints of the investigation, e.g., the protection of business secrets. Furthermore, we analyze which test method can be used in the context of which black box audit concept. It turns out that various factors, such as the type of black box audit or the lack of an oracle, may limit the selection of applicable tests. With the help of this paper, people or organizations who want to test an ADM system for bias can identify which test methods and auditing concepts are applicable and what implications they entail. This paper provides an empirical and conceptual account on seeing machine learning models as part of a sociotechnical system to identify relevant vulnerabilities emerging in the context of use. As ML is increasingly adopted in socially sensitive and safety-critical domains, many ML applications end up not delivering on their promises, and contributing to new forms of algorithmic harm. There is still a lack of empirical insights as well as conceptual tools and frameworks to properly understand and design for the impact of ML models in their sociotechnical context. In this paper, we follow a design science research approach to work towards such insights and tools. We center our study in the financial industry, where we first empirically map recently emerging MLOps practices to govern ML applications, and corroborate our insights with recent literature. We then perform an integrative literature research to identify a long list of vulnerabilities that emerge in the sociotechnical context of ML applications, and we theorize these along eight dimensions. We then perform semi-structured interviews in two real-world use cases and across a broad set of relevant actors and organizations, to validate the conceptual dimensions and identify challenges to address sociotechnical vulnerabilities in the design and governance of ML-based systems. This paper introduces the collection of the Journal on Machine Learning (ML) and the user. It provides a brief history of ML from the 1950's through to the current time, sketching the nature of the kinds of precursor AI techniques used in such things as expert systems right the way through to the emergence of ML and its tool sets, including deep learning. It concludes with the 'generative AI' used in such ML technologies as PaLM and GPT-3. The history highlights key changes and developments in ML, the especial importance and limitations of deep learning, and the changing attitudes and expectations of users in an environment when ML can and often is oversold. This paper simulates the relative performance of various artificial intelligence (AI) techniques when applied to nonlinear distortion compensation in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical communication systems. These procedures are less complex than state-of-the-art compensation methods and do not necessitate prior knowledge about the properties of data in neighboring WDM channels, which can be practically challenging. In this study, Neural Networks (NNs) were integrated into both the transmitter and receiver sections of 3- and 5-channel WDM systems, and the resulting enhancement in performance (Q-factor) was assessed across varying levels of fiber nonlinearities. While the NN stage enhances the system performance, the improvement decreases as expected with the channel number and γ . Next, two-stage architectures that employ a transmitter side NN together with a classifier at the receiver side were modeled. For the systems examined in this paper simple decision tree structures, boosting, forests, extra trees, and multi-layer perceptron (MLP) classifiers all yielded enhanced system performance compared to simple chromatic dispersion compensation (CDC) with the only exception being Ada boosting which decreased the Q-factor for γ = 14 W - 1 k m - 1 . The outcomes of these investigations show that the most effective performance in highly nonlinear WDM systems is attained by employing two-stage systems, with the incorporation of random forest or extra tree AI methods at the receiver side yielding the highest results. The increasing availability of hydrological and physiographic spatiotemporal data has boosted machine learning's role in rapid flood mapping. Yet, data scarcity, especially high-resolution DEMs, challenges regions with limited access. This paper examines how DEM type and resolution affect flood prediction accuracy, utilizing a cutting-edge deep learning (DL) method called 1D convolutional neural network (CNN). It utilizes synthetic hydrographs as training input and water depth data obtained from LISFLOOD-FP, a 2D hydrodynamic model, as target data. This study investigates digital surface models (DSMs) and digital terrain models (DTMs) derived from a 1 m LIDAR-based DTM, with resolutions from 15 to 30 m. The methodology is applied and assessed in a established benchmark, city of Carlisle, UK. The models' performance is then evaluated and compared against an observed flood event using RMSE, Bias, and Fit indices. Leveraging the insights gained from this region, the paper discusses the applicability of the methodology to address the challenges encountered in a data-scarce flood-prone region, exemplified by Pakistan. Results indicated that utilizing a 30 m DTM outperformed a 30 m DSM in terms of flood depth prediction accuracy by about 21% during the flood peak stage, highlighting the superior performance of DTM at lower resolutions. Increasing the resolution of DTM to 15 m resulted in a minimum 50% increase in RMSE and a 20% increase in fit index across all flood stages. The findings emphasize that while a coarser resolution DEM may impact the accuracy of machine learning models, it remains a viable option for rapid flood prediction. Combining the advantages of quantum computing and machine learning, quantum machine learning is anticipated to advance the field of artificial intelligence further. Recent research has demonstrated, however, that the state-of-the-art quantum classifiers can be deceived by adversarial examples, leading to incorrect classifications by quantum models. This paper proposes the quantum fuzzy convolutional neural network, which is used to detect adversarial examples, by combining the benefits of fuzzy systems and the quantum convolutional neural network. This defensive strategy does not modify the structure and training process of the quantum classifier that requires protection. Simulation experiments show that the adversarial example detection approach proposed in this paper can successfully separate the real data distribution from the adversarial data distribution and detect the adversarial examples generated by a specific attack method on a specific quantum classifier. It is nowadays widely understood that undeclared work cannot be efficiently combated without a holistic view on the mechanisms underlying its existence. However, the question remains whether we possess all the pieces of the holistic puzzle. To fill the gap, in this paper, we test if the features so far known to affect the behaviour of taxpayers are sufficient to detect noncompliance with outstanding precision. This is done by training seven supervised machine learning models on the compilation of data from the 2019 Special Eurobarometer on undeclared work and relevant figures from other sources. The conducted analysis not only does attest to the completeness of our knowledge concerning the drivers of undeclared work but also paves the way for wide usage of artificial intelligence in monitoring and confronting this detrimental practice. The study, however, exposes the necessity of having at disposal considerably larger datasets compared to those currently available if successful real-world applications of machine learning are to be achieved in this field. Alongside the apparent theoretical contribution, this paper is thus also expected to be of particular importance for policymakers, whose efforts to tackle tax evasion will have to be expedited in the period after the COVID-19 pandemic. Purpose: This scoping review summarizes the applications of artificial intelligence (AI) and bioinformatics methodologies in analysis of ocular biofluid markers. The secondary objective was to explore supervised and unsupervised AI techniques and their predictive accuracies. We also evaluate the integration of bioinformatics with AI tools. Methods: This scoping review was conducted across five electronic databases including EMBASE, Medline, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and Web of Science from inception to July 14, 2021. Studies pertaining to biofluid marker analysis using AI or bioinformatics were included. Results: A total of 10,262 articles were retrieved from all databases and 177 studies met the inclusion criteria. The most commonly studied ocular diseases were diabetic eye diseases, with 50 papers (28%), while glaucoma was explored in 25 studies (14%), age-related macular degeneration in 20 (11%), dry eye disease in 10 (6%), and uveitis in 9 (5%). Supervised learning was used in 91 papers (51%), unsupervised AI in 83 (46%), and bioinformatics in 85 (48%). Ninety-eight papers (55%) used more than one class of AI (e.g. > 1 of supervised, unsupervised, bioinformatics, or statistical techniques), while 79 (45%) used only one. Supervised learning techniques were often used to predict disease status or prognosis, and demonstrated strong accuracy. Unsupervised AI algorithms were used to bolster the accuracy of other algorithms, identify molecularly distinct subgroups, or cluster cases into distinct subgroups that are useful for prediction of the disease course. Finally, bioinformatic tools were used to translate complex biomarker profiles or findings into interpretable data. Conclusion: AI analysis of biofluid markers displayed diagnostic accuracy, provided insight into mechanisms of molecular etiologies, and had the ability to provide individualized targeted therapeutic treatment for patients. Given the progression of AI towards use in both research and the clinic, ophthalmologists should be broadly aware of the commonly used algorithms and their applications. Objective: To evaluate the usage of a well-known and widely adopted checklist, Checklist for Artificial Intelligence in Medical imaging (CLAIM), for self-reporting through a systematic analysis of its citations. Methods: Google Scholar, Web of Science, and Scopus were used to search for citations (date, 29 April 2023). CLAIM's use for self-reporting with proof (i.e., filled-out checklist) and other potential use cases were systematically assessed in research papers. Eligible papers were evaluated independently by two readers, with the help of automatic annotation. Item-by-item confirmation analysis on papers with checklist proof was subsequently performed. Results: A total of 391 unique citations were identified from three databases. Of the 118 papers included in this study, 12 (10%) provided a proof of self-reported CLAIM checklist. More than half (70; 59%) only mentioned some sort of adherence to CLAIM without providing any proof in the form of a checklist. Approximately one-third (36; 31%) cited the CLAIM for reasons unrelated to their reporting or methodological adherence. Overall, the claims on 57 to 93% of the items per publication were confirmed in the item-by-item analysis, with a mean and standard deviation of 81% and 10%, respectively. Conclusion: Only a small proportion of the publications used CLAIM as checklist and supplied filled-out documentation; however, the self-reported checklists may contain errors and should be approached cautiously. We hope that this systematic citation analysis would motivate artificial intelligence community about the importance of proper self-reporting, and encourage researchers, journals, editors, and reviewers to take action to ensure the proper usage of checklists. Systematic reviews and meta-analyses are crucial for advancing research, yet they are time-consuming and resource-demanding. Although machine learning and natural language processing algorithms may reduce this time and these resources, their performance has not been tested in education and educational psychology, and there is a lack of clear information on when researchers should stop the reviewing process. In this study, we conducted a retrospective screening simulation using 27 systematic reviews in education and educational psychology. We evaluated the sensitivity, specificity, and estimated time savings of several learning algorithms and heuristic stopping criteria. The results showed, on average, a 58% (SD = 19%) reduction in the screening workload of irrelevant records when using learning algorithms for abstract screening and an estimated time savings of 1.66 days (SD = 1.80). The learning algorithm random forests with sentence bidirectional encoder representations from transformers outperformed other algorithms. This finding emphasizes the importance of incorporating semantic and contextual information during feature extraction and modeling in the screening process. Furthermore, we found that 95% of all relevant abstracts within a given dataset can be retrieved using heuristic stopping rules. Specifically, an approach that stops the screening process after classifying 20% of records and consecutively classifying 5% of irrelevant papers yielded the most significant gains in terms of specificity (M = 42%, SD = 28%). However, the performance of the heuristic stopping criteria depended on the learning algorithm used and the length and proportion of relevant papers in an abstract collection. Increasing computational power has led to the expansion of civil engineering research into using machine learning concepts for developing improved design strategies. These strategies are particularly useful for the design of extra-terrestrial habitats under uncertain environmental conditions. This paper focuses on building an unsupervised machine learning model (convolutional autoencoder) capable of detecting patterns in arch shapes and differentiating between their stress and displacement contours. Foremost, detailed discussions of the model's architecture and input data are presented. The variation of arch shapes and contours between cluster centroids in the latent space is determined, proving the capability of optimisation by moving towards clusters with optimal contours. Finally, a regression model is built to investigate the relationship between the input geometric variables and the latent space representation. We prove that the autoencoder and regression models produce arch shapes with logical structural contours given a set of input geometric variables. The results presented in this paper provide essential tools for the development of an automated design strategy capable of finding optimal arch shapes for extra-terrestrial habitats. In addition, this paper presents a precis of various machine learning techniques and their respective applications in the field of healthcare, utilizing diverse datasets and performance metrics. Ultimately, this study examines the barriers and potential remedies surrounding the implementation and utilization of machine learning in the healthcare sector. Objective: To systematically review radiomic feature reproducibility and model validation strategies in recent studies dealing with CT and MRI radiomics of bone and soft-tissue sarcomas, thus updating a previous version of this review which included studies published up to 2020. Methods: A literature search was conducted on EMBASE and PubMed databases for papers published between January 2021 and March 2023. Data regarding radiomic feature reproducibility and model validation strategies were extracted and analyzed. Results: Out of 201 identified papers, 55 were included. They dealt with radiomics of bone (n = 23) or soft-tissue (n = 32) tumors. Thirty-two (out of 54 employing manual or semiautomatic segmentation, 59%) studies included a feature reproducibility analysis. Reproducibility was assessed based on intra/interobserver segmentation variability in 30 (55%) and geometrical transformations of the region of interest in 2 (4%) studies. At least one machine learning validation technique was used for model development in 34 (62%) papers, and K-fold cross-validation was employed most frequently. A clinical validation of the model was reported in 38 (69%) papers. It was performed using a separate dataset from the primary institution (internal test) in 22 (40%), an independent dataset from another institution (external test) in 14 (25%) and both in 2 (4%) studies. Conclusions: Compared to papers published up to 2020, a clear improvement was noted with almost double publications reporting methodological aspects related to reproducibility and validation. Larger multicenter investigations including external clinical validation and the publication of databases in open-access repositories could further improve methodology and bring radiomics from a research area to the clinical stage. Given the complexity and wide range of applications being developed for the Internet of Things (IoT) requiring an efficient mapping of application tasks in hardware resources, especially embedded systems, it is necessary to address the problem of resource optimization, taking into account constraints for energy consumption, latency, and bandwidth, among others. This paper proposes a population based multi-objective heuristic algorithm to solve the task mapping for an application into a hierarchical hardware architecture known as Wireless Network on Chip using a mathematical modeling, as well as Artificial Intelligence algorithms, that combine the strategies of neural networks and genetic algorithms. A Population Based Incremental Learning (PBIL) algorithm is used in this research to solve the task mapping problem oriented to IoT applications, allowing heterogeneous systems to be involved with different bandwidths, latencies and technologies. The optimization goals addressed in this paper are bandwidth, speedup, power consumption and communication cost. The PBIL algorithm was tested on synthetic applications with heavy workload, where performance is measured taking into account the combination of low power consumption and maximum speedup and bandwidth. Other tests carried out with the PBIL algorithm were aimed to reduce the cost of communication in task mapping for real applications such as Multi-Window Display (MWD) and MPEG4 decoder. The results obtained in both synthetic and real applications showed an improvement when Escort entropy was used compared to Renyi and Shannon. The concept of magic is frequently used to discuss technology, a practice considered useful by some with others arguing that viewing technology as magic precludes a proper understanding of technology. Based on an anthropological perspective, this paper juxtaposes ML technology with magic, using descriptions drawn from a project on an ML-powered system for propulsion control of cargo ships. This paper proposes a wireless network-based machine intelligence model to enhance the predictive capability of green tourism satisfaction in regions with cultural differences. The model combines big data analysis techniques and machine learning algorithms to collect tourist data through intelligent machines and devices. Analyzing tourists' behavior and preferences establishes a reliable prediction model to effectively assess tourists' satisfaction with green tourism. Additionally, the paper constructs a distributed integration scheduling and feature mining model of green tourism satisfaction, which extracts relevant information features of big statistical data using an integration feature detection method. Furthermore, the paper establishes a fuzzy network structure model and designs the objective function of green tourism satisfaction prediction through decision scheduling and parameter optimization. The model's parameter-weighted learning enhances the optimization prediction ability of green tourism satisfaction under regional cultural differences. The paper also carries out green tourism satisfaction prediction and tourists' preference feature analysis using the fuzzy big data matching feature clustering method. Early detection of the adenocarcinoma cancer in colon tissue by means of explainable deep learning, by classifying histological images and providing visual explainability on model prediction. Considering that in recent years, deep learning techniques have emerged as powerful techniques in medical image analysis, offering unprecedented accuracy and efficiency, in this paper we propose a method to automatically detect the presence of cancerous cells in colon tissue images. Various deep learning architectures are considered, with the aim of considering the best one in terms of quantitative and qualitative results. As a matter of fact, we consider qualitative results by taking into account the so-called prediction explainability, by providing a way to highlight on the tissue images the areas that from the model point of view are related to the presence of colon cancer. The experimental analysis, performed on 10,000 colon issue images, showed the effectiveness of the proposed method by obtaining an accuracy equal to 0.99. Lung cancer is an uncontrolled growth of tissue causing a lump in the human lung. If lung cancer can be detected early, it can increase the survival rate. Therefore, a multi-classification approach of lung nodule detection with high computational effectiveness is required. In this paper, a multi-classification approach of lung nodule detection and classification is proposed using artificial intelligence on computed tomography (CT) scan images. Different preprocessing steps are applied for resizing, smoothing, and enhancement of the CT images. Then, two different approaches for feature extraction using VGG16 transfer learning and morphological segmentation are proposed. Morphological segmentation and feature extraction are applied for the segmentation of the region of interest and to extract the distinct features. Finally, the proposed deep learning architecture and seven different machine learning algorithms are applied on the preprocessed data and the extracted features for the classification of lung nodules into three classes: malignant, benign, and normal. It is observed that the stacked ensemble model of deep learning convolutional neural network (CNN) and VGG16 transfer learning models (CNN+VGG16) can achieve 99.55% accuracy using preprocessed data. It is also observed that all the ML algorithms perform with reasonably high accuracy using the low-dimensional morphological features. It is observed from the fivefold cross-validation results that logistic regression performs with 99.36% accuracy in 23.71 s time using the preprocessed data. Whereas, using the morphological features, k-nearest neighbor, and the support vector machine perform with the highest accuracy of 99.76% with very reduced computational time of 0.017 and 0.008 s, respectively. This paper presents AutoTemplate, an innovative data preprocessing protocol, addressing the crucial need for high-quality chemical reaction datasets in the realm of machine learning applications in organic chemistry. Recent advances in artificial intelligence have expanded the application of machine learning in chemistry, particularly in yield prediction, retrosynthesis, and reaction condition prediction. However, the effectiveness of these models hinges on the integrity of chemical reaction datasets, which are often plagued by inconsistencies like missing reactants, incorrect atom mappings, and outright erroneous reactions. AutoTemplate introduces a two-stage approach to refine these datasets. The first stage involves extracting meaningful reaction transformation rules and formulating generic reaction templates using a simplified SMARTS representation. This simplification broadens the applicability of templates across various chemical reactions. The second stage is template-guided reaction curation, where these templates are systematically applied to validate and correct the reaction data. This process effectively amends missing reactant information, rectifies atom-mapping errors, and eliminates incorrect data entries. A standout feature of AutoTemplate is its capability to concurrently identify and correct false chemical reactions. It operates on the premise that most reactions in datasets are accurate, using these as templates to guide the correction of flawed entries. The protocol demonstrates its efficacy across a range of chemical reactions, significantly enhancing dataset quality. Leptospirosis is a global disease that impacts people worldwide, particularly in humid and tropical regions, and is associated with significant socio-economic deficiencies. Its symptoms are often confused with other syndromes, which can compromise clinical diagnosis and the failure to carry out specific laboratory tests. In this respect, this paper presents a study of three algorithms (Decision Tree, Random Forest and Adaboost) for predicting the outcome (cure or death) of individuals with leptospirosis. Using the records contained in the government National System of Aggressions and Notification (SINAN, in portuguese) from 2007 to 2017, for the state of Pará, Brazil, where the temporal attributes of health care, symptoms (headache, vomiting, jaundice, calf pain) and clinical evolution (renal failure and respiratory changes) were used. In the performance evaluation of the selected models, it was observed that the Random Forest exhibited an accuracy of 90.81% for the training dataset, considering the attributes of experiment 8, and the Decision Tree presented an accuracy of 74.29 for the validation database. So, this result considers the best attributes pointed out by experiment 10: time first symptoms medical attention, time first symptoms ELISA sample collection, medical attention hospital admission time, headache, calf pain, vomiting, jaundice, renal insufficiency, and respiratory alterations. The contribution of this article is the confirmation that artificial intelligence, using the Decision Tree model algorithm, depicting the best choice as the final model to be used in future data for the prediction of human leptospirosis cases, helping in the diagnosis and course of the disease, aiming to avoid the evolution to death. Recently, ConvNeXt and blueprint separable convolution (BSConv) constructed from standard ConvNet modules have demonstrated competitive performance in advanced computer vision tasks. This paper proposes an efficient model (BCRN) based on BSConv and the ConvNeXt residual structure for single image super-resolution, which achieves superior performance with very low parametric numbers. Specifically, the residual block (BCB) of the BCRN utilizes the ConvNeXt residual structure and BSConv to significantly reduce the number of parameters. Within the residual block, enhanced spatial attention and contrast-aware channel attention modules are simultaneously introduced to prioritize valuable features within the network. Multiple residual blocks are then stacked to form the backbone network, with Dense connections utilized between them to enhance feature utilization. Our model boasts extremely low parameters compared to other state-of-the-art lightweight models, while experimental results on benchmark datasets demonstrate its excellent performance. With rapid development and deployment of artificial intelligence methods, the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) has highly developed to fast tracing industrial communications and optimizing manufacturing processes. In Industry 5.0, hyper-automation process as one of technological trends navigates industrial entities to intelligent devices of the IIoT, cloud computing, smart robotics, smart agile software and embedded components by high complexity and reliability. By increasing data communication in the IIoT environments and cloud computing, the security and safety of hyper-automation process is also increasingly unstable and challengeable with respect to cyber-attacks, unstructured malwares and abnormal activities. With the diversification and unexpected behaviors of cyber-security threats, traditional cyber-attack detection systems have some critical problems with increasing massive data including unappropriated feature selection and extraction, high computation time in prediction and inaccurate classification models. Due to the above-mentioned challenges, this paper presents a new cloud-based cyber-attack detection architecture based on Ensemble Bagged Trees Detection (EBTD) algorithm for predicting malicious behaviors and types of cyber-attacks for hyper-automation process in the IIoT. The proposed architecture uses Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and a priority-based feature selection and extraction model to find the optimal features with highly dependent on the network traffic, computation time, malicious behaviors, and types of attacks. One of these areas is sales planning, where machine learning is used to leverage a variety of different input parameters such as prices, promotions, or the weather, to forecast sales, and therefore directly affects the production of products and goods. To satisfy the goal of environmental sustainability as well as address short shelf life, the food industry represents an interesting application field for the use of ML for optimizing sales planning. Within this paper, we will examine the design, and especially the application, of ML methods in the food industry and show the current challenges that exist in the use of such concepts and technologies from the end-user's point of view. Our study of a smaller bakery company shows that there are enormous challenges in setting up the appropriate infrastructure and processes for the implementation of ML, that the output quality of ML processes does not always match the perceived result quality, and that trust in the functioning of the algorithms is the most important criterion for using ML processes in practice. The advent of Industry 4.0 has significantly promoted the field of intelligent manufacturing, which is facilitated by the development of new technologies are emerging. Robot technology and robot intelligence methods have rapidly developed and been widely applied. Manipulators are widely used in industry, and their control is a crucial research topic. The inverse kinematics solution of manipulators is an important part of manipulator control, which calculates the joint angles required for the end effector to reach a desired position and posture. Traditional inverse kinematics solution algorithms often face the problem of insufficient generalization, and iterative methods have challenges such as large computation and long solution time. This paper proposes a reinforcement learning-based inverse kinematics solution algorithm, called the MAPPO-IK algorithm. The algorithm trains the manipulator agent using the MAPPO algorithm and calculates the difference between the end effector state of the manipulator and the target posture in real-time by designing a reward mechanism, while considering Gaussian distance and cosine distance. Through experimental comparative analysis, the feasibility, computational efficiency, and superiority of this reinforcement learning algorithm are verified. Compared with traditional inverse kinematics solution algorithms, this method has good generalization and supports real-time computation, and the obtained result is a unique solution. Reinforcement learning algorithms have better adaptability to complex environments and can handle different sudden situations in different environments. The ever-increasing use of artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize embedding a watermark or find the optimal location in the host image for inserting a watermark might solve some problems in this field. However, the main problem, which is finding the optimum trade-off point among several watermarking criteria, has still not been investigated by researchers in this field, especially for speech signals. This paper aims to find the best trade-off among the watermarking requirements such as capacity, inaudibility, and robustness by applying an AI model. Moreover, a novel watermarking technique is proposed by modification of the probability density function (PDF) of the linear predictive (LP) residual and wavelet detail coefficient. For this method, a mathematical model is developed based on applying higher-order statistics for embedding and extracting the watermark. Sinh-arcsinh is used to shape the skewness and kurtosis of normal distribution for the LP residual or the wavelet high-frequency sub-bands, respectively, based on the watermark bits. Experimental results will show that although LP residual is not robust and it shows random behavior for modeling its PDF, the wavelet high-frequency band is quite robust and it can model the PDF of the wavelet. Moreover, it is demonstrated that AI has the capability to compromise among the watermarking criteria. Conclusions are drawn based on theoretical (maximum likelihood) and AI (machine learning) approaches, which confirm the effectiveness of the proposed model. As the number of logs generated by each node in the national high-performance computing environment continues to increase, manual analysis of abnormal logs has become slow and inaccurate. This makes it difficult to meet the requirements of daily system analysis. In response to this problem, this paper proposes a method for defining an abnormal log business model. Through the analysis of the exception logs of the multi-node system, this paper finds that the exception logs have a certain regularity and repeatability. Therefore, the abnormal logs can be detected by analyzing the log traffic pattern. This method uses machine learning algorithm to analyze log data in multi-node system, extract normal log traffic patterns, and use these patterns to detect abnormal behavior. Experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively detect abnormal log traffic patterns in multi-node systems, with high accuracy and robustness, and can detect and locate system faults in time, improving the reliability and stability of the system. In recent years, the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) has revolutionized various industries, with image processing playing an important role in the revolution. AI-powered image analysis has opened up new possibilities in healthcare diagnostics, autonomous navigation, and security surveillance, fuelling demand for sophisticated image-processing solutions. This paper describes an innovative approach to AI image processing that combines multi-sensor data fusion with convolutional neural networks (CNNs) within a fuzzy neural network framework. This integration uses data from various sensors, including cameras, lidar, and radar, to improve the robustness and precision of image analysis and interpretation. The T–S model serves as the foundation for the information fusion strategy. A comprehensive investigation of deep learning algorithms reveals inherent strengths such as robustness and parallelism. However, it also identifies limitations, particularly in image segmentation tasks, characterized by challenges like premature convergence and prolonged computation times. The paper proposes a quantization technique for deep learning algorithms to address these issues and introduces chaotic optimization to expedite convergence rates. It also presents a novel three-dimensional Otsu threshold segmentation method based on CNNs, which overcomes noise susceptibility in traditional two-dimensional approaches. Integrating Gray morphology and this three-dimensional Otsu threshold segmentation method results in the development of a three-dimensional Gray Otsu model. This model is the basis for designing a fitness function for the CNN algorithm, optimizing its efficacy. Experimental validation demonstrates the proposed algorithm's effectiveness, achieving an impressive 91% accuracy rate while displaying robust noise resistance and versatility. Today's factories are considered as smart ecosystems with humans, machines and devices interacting with each other for efficient manufacturing of products. Industry 4.0 is a suite of enabler technologies for such smart ecosystems that allow transformation of industrial processes. When implemented, Industry 4.0 technologies have a huge impact on efficiency, productivity and profitability of businesses. The adoption and implementation of Industry 4.0, however, require to overcome a number of practical challenges, in most cases, due to the lack of modernisation and automation in place with traditional manufacturers. This paper presents a first of its kind case study for moving a traditional food manufacturer, still using the machinery more than one hundred years old, a common occurrence for small- and medium-sized businesses, to adopt the Industry 4.0 technologies. The paper reports the challenges we have encountered during the transformation process and in the development stage. The paper also presents a smart production control system that we have developed by utilising AI, machine learning, Internet of things, big data analytics, cyber-physical systems and cloud computing technologies. The system provides novel data collection, information extraction and intelligent monitoring services, enabling improved efficiency and consistency as well as reduced operational cost. The platform has been developed in real-world settings offered by an Innovate UK-funded project and has been integrated into the company's existing production facilities. In this way, the company has not been required to replace old machinery outright, but rather adapted the existing machinery to an entirely new way of operating. Background: Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) effectively treats brain metastases. It can provide local control, symptom relief, and improved survival rates, but it poses challenges in selecting optimal candidates, determining dose and fractionation, monitoring for toxicity, and integrating with other modalities. Practical tools to predict patient outcomes are also needed. Machine learning (ML) is currently used to predict treatment outcomes. We aim to investigate the accuracy of ML in predicting treatment response and local failure of brain metastasis treated with SRS. Methods: PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science (WoS), and Embase were searched until April 16th, which was repeated on October 17th, 2023 to find possible relevant papers. The study preparation adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guideline. The statistical analysis was performed by the MIDAS package of STATA v.17. Results: A total of 17 articles were reviewed, of which seven and eleven were related to the clinical use of ML in predicting local failure and treatment response. The ML algorithms showed sensitivity and specificity of 0.89 (95% CI: 0.84–0.93) and 0.87 (95% CI: 0.81–0.92) for predicting treatment response. The positive likelihood ratio was 7.1 (95% CI: 4.5–11.1), the negative likelihood ratio was 0.13 (95% CI: 0.08–0.19), and the diagnostic odds ratio was 56 (95% CI: 25–125). Moreover, the pooled estimates for sensitivity and specificity of ML algorithms for predicting local failure were 0.93 (95% CI: 0.76–0.98) and 0.80 (95% CI: 0.53–0.94). The positive likelihood ratio was 4.7 (95% CI: 1.6–14.0), the negative likelihood ratio was 0.09 (95% CI: 0.02–0.39), and the diagnostic odds ratio was 53 (95% CI: 5-606). Conclusion: ML holds promise in predicting treatment response and local failure in brain metastasis patients receiving SRS. Deep learning integration in cancer diagnosis enhances accuracy and diagnosis speed which helps clinical decision-making and improves health outcomes. Despite all these benefits in cancer diagnosis, the present AI models in urology cancer diagnosis have not been sufficiently reviewed systematically. This paper reviews the artificial intelligence approaches used in cancer diagnosis, prediction, and treatment of urology cancer. AI models and their applications in urology subspecialties are evaluated and discussed. The Scopus, Microsoft Academic and PubMed/MEDLINE databases were searched in November 2022 using the terms "artificial intelligence", "neural network", "machine learning," or "deep learning" combined with the phrase "urology cancers". The search was limited to publications published within the previous 20 years to identify cutting-edge deep-learning applications published in English. Irrelevant review articles and publications were eliminated. The included research involves two kinds of research analysis: quantitative and qualitative. 48 articles were included in this survey. 25 studies proposed several approaches for prostate cancers, while 15 were for bladder cancers. 8 studies discussed renal cell carcinoma and kidney cancer. The models presented to detect urology cancers have achieved high detection accuracy (77–95%). Deep learning approaches that use convolutional neural networks have achieved the highest accuracy among other techniques. Although it is still progressing, the development of AI models for urology cancer detection, prediction, and therapy has shown significant promise. Additional research is required to employ more extensive, higher-quality, and more recent datasets to the clinical performance of the proposed AI models in urology cancer applications. The study preparation adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guideline. The statistical analysis was performed by the MIDAS package of STATA v.17. Results: A total of 17 articles were reviewed, of which seven and eleven were related to the clinical use of ML in predicting local failure and treatment response. The ML algorithms showed sensitivity and specificity of 0.89 (95% CI: 0.84–0.93) and 0.87 (95% CI: 0.81–0.92) for predicting treatment response. The positive likelihood ratio was 7.1 (95% CI: 4.5–11.1), the negative likelihood ratio was 0.13 (95% CI: 0.08–0.19), and the diagnostic odds ratio was 56 (95% CI: 25–125). Moreover, the pooled estimates for sensitivity and specificity of ML algorithms for predicting local failure were 0.93 (95% CI: 0.76–0.98) and 0.80 (95% CI: 0.53–0.94). The positive likelihood ratio was 4.7 (95% CI: 1.6–14.0), the negative likelihood ratio was 0.09 (95% CI: 0.02–0.39), and the diagnostic odds ratio was 53 (95% CI: 5-606). Conclusion: ML holds promise in predicting treatment response and local failure in brain metastasis patients receiving SRS. Due to high spatial and temporal resolution, geostationary meteorological satellite imagery is a valuable source of information on the development of deep convective clouds and related severe weather events. Some methods for automatic deep convection detection from satellite data provide a satisfactory probability of detection for independent datasets, but are characterized by a high false alarm rate. The paper gives a description of an algorithm for automatic detection of deep convective clouds with satellite imagery using gradient boosting, logistic regression, and artificial neural network models. The results of validation of the proposed method using dependent and independent data of ground-based observations for the period 2013–2020 are presented. The Internet of Things (IoT) is crucial for deploying a novel Artificial Intelligence (AI) model for both network and application management. However, using classical centralized learning algorithms in the IoT environment is challenging, given massively distributed private datasets. Advancements in AI have helped us solve various use cases, but it operates under two significant challenges. Firstly, the data exists in separate clusters, and secondly, the current AI has limited data privacy and security. Federated learning (FL) aims to preserve data privacy through distributed learning methods that keep the data in storage silos. Likewise, differential privacy improves data privacy by measuring the privacy loss in communication among the elements of FL. The paper proposes two adaptive approaches for making model training differentially private in a vertical federated environment. The first one uses random feature selection to train different machine learning models, and performance improvement is also proposed. The second approach uses a tree structure, i.e., Classification and Regression Trees, using some defined constraints. In this paper, a novel data-centric approach is proposed for solving the 3D mesh segmentation problem. The method uses node2vec, a semi-supervised learning algorithm, to create vector embedding representations for each node in a 3D mesh graph. This makes the mesh data more compact and easier to process which is important for reducing computation costs. K-Means clustering is then used to cluster each node according to their node embedding information. This data-centric approach is more computationally efficient than other complex models such as CNN and RNN. The main contribution of this study is the development of a data-centric AI framework that combines node2vec embedding, machine learning, and deep learning techniques. The use of cosine similarity is also adapted to compare and evaluate the trained node embedding vectors with different hyperparameters. Additionally, a new algorithm is developed to determine the optimal cluster number using geodesic distance on the 3D mesh. This review paper presents the practical development of imaging biomarkers in the scope of the PRIMAGE (PRedictive In silico Multiscale Analytics to support cancer personalized diaGnosis and prognosis, Empowered by imaging biomarkers) project, as a noninvasive and reliable way to improve the diagnosis and prognosis in pediatric oncology. The PRIMAGE project is a European multi-center research initiative that focuses on developing medical imaging-derived artificial intelligence (AI) solutions designed to enhance overall management and decision-making for two types of pediatric cancer: neuroblastoma and diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma. To allow this, the PRIMAGE project has created an open-cloud platform that combines imaging, clinical, and molecular data together with AI models developed from this data, creating a comprehensive decision support environment for clinicians managing patients with these two cancers. In order to achieve this, a standardized data processing and analysis workflow was implemented to generate robust and reliable predictions for different clinical endpoints. Magnetic resonance (MR) image harmonization and registration was performed as part of the workflow. Subsequently, an automated tool for the detection and segmentation of tumors was trained and internally validated. The Dice similarity coefficient obtained for the independent validation dataset was 0.997, indicating compatibility with the manual segmentation variability. Following this, radiomics and deep features were extracted and correlated with clinical endpoints. Finally, reproducible and relevant imaging quantitative features were integrated with clinical and molecular data to enrich both the predictive models and a set of visual analytics tools, making the PRIMAGE platform a complete clinical decision aid system. In order to ensure the advancement of research in this field and to foster engagement with the wider research community, the PRIMAGE data repository and platform are currently being integrated into the European Federation for Cancer Images (EUCAIM), which is the largest European cancer imaging research infrastructure created to date. Changes and modifications to existing products, known as engineering changes (EC), are common in complex product development. They require appropriate implementation planning and supervision to mitigate the economic downsides due to complexity. These tasks, however, take a high administrative toll on the organization. In response, automation by computer tools has been suggested. Due to the underlying process complexity, the application of artificial intelligence (AI) is advised. To support research and development of new AI-artifacts for EC management (ECM), a knowledge base is required. Thus, this paper aims to gather insights from existing approaches and discover literature gaps by conducting a systematic literature review. 39 publications applying AI methods and algorithms in ECM were identified and subsequently discussed. The analysis shows that the methods vary and are mostly utilized for predicting change propagation and knowledge retrieval. The review's results suggest that AI in EC requires developing distributed AI systems to manage the ensuing complexity. Additionally, five concrete suggestions are presented as future research needs: Research on metaheuristics for optimizing EC schedules, testing of stacked machine learning methods for process outcome prediction, establishment of process supervision, development of the mentioned distributed AI systems for automation, and validation with industry partners. In order to forecast possible injuries, machine learning algorithms may examine enormous volumes of data, such as an athlete's training regimen, medical history, and performance indicators. A new area of study called photonic quantum information has emerged as a result of recent advancements in technology enabling the production, control, and detection of individual single photons. Realising single photon switches, creating photonic quantum circuits with specialised uses, and using new photonic states for optical metrology that goes beyond conventional optics are some examples of this advancement. Based on the author's previous and present efforts, the current state of photonic quantum information technology is reviewed in this review paper. Microelectronics production failure analysis is an important step in improving product quality and development. In fact, the understanding of the failure mechanisms and therefore the implementation of corrective actions on the cause of the failure depend on the results of this analysis. These analyses are saved under textual features format. Then such data need first to be preprocessed and vectorized (converted to numeric). Second, to overcome the curse of dimensionality caused by the vectorisation process, a dimension reduction is applied. A two-stage variable selection and feature extraction is used to reduce the high dimensionality of a feature space. We are first interested in studying the potential of using an unsupervised variable selection technique, the genetic algorithm, to identify the variables that best demonstrate discrimination in the separation and compactness of groups of textual data. The genetic algorithm uses a combination of the K-means or Gaussian Mixture Model clustering and validity indices as a fitness function for optimization. Such a function improves both compactness and class separation. The second work looks into the feasibility of applying a feature extraction technique. The adopted methodology is a Deep learning algorithm based on variational autoencoder (VAE) for latent space disentanglement and Gaussian Mixture Model for clustering of the latent space for cluster identification. The last objective of this paper is to propose a new methodology based on the combination between variational autoencoder (VAE) for the latent space disentanglement, and genetic algorithm (GA) to find, in an unsupervised way, the latent variables allowing the best discrimination of clusters of failure analysis data. This methodology is called VAE-GA. Experiments on textual datasets of failure analysis demonstrate the effectiveness of the VAE-GA proposed method which allows better discrimination of textual classes compared to the use of GA or VAE separately or the combination of PCA with GA (PCA-GA) or a simple Auto-encoders with GA (AE-GA). This paper presents a range of novel reinforcement learning algorithms derived from the actor–critic approach. These modified algorithms effectively utilize the available information to enhance performance. Our proposed framework introduces several key components to the traditional actor–critic model, including an underlying model learner, selector, tuner, and estimator. The estimator employs an approximate value function and the learned underlying model to estimate the values of all actions at the next state. The selector approximates the optimal action at the next state, which is then utilized by the actor to optimize its policy. In contrast to the conventional actor–critic algorithm where the actor focuses solely on policy optimization and the critic performs value-function approximation and policy evaluation, our selector–actor–critic algorithm employs a selector to approximate the optimal action at the current state, thereby influencing the actor's policy updates. Furthermore, our tuner–actor–critic algorithm incorporates a critic and a model-learner to approximate the action-value function and the dynamics of the underlying environment, respectively. The tuner then utilizes this information to adjust the value of the current state–action pair. In the estimator–selector–actor–critic algorithm, we develop intelligent agents based on the concepts of lookahead and intuition. Lookahead is utilized in estimating the values of available actions at the next state, while intuition guides the maximization of the probability of selecting the approximate optimal action. Through simulation experiments, we evaluate the performance of these algorithms, and the results demonstrate the superiority of the estimator–selector–actor–critic approach over other existing algorithms.
