Lung cancer is an uncontrolled growth of tissue causing a lump in the human lung. If lung cancer can be detected early, it can increase the survival rate. Therefore, a multi-classification approach of lung nodule detection with high computational effectiveness is required. In this paper, a multi-classification approach of lung nodule detection and classification is proposed using artificial intelligence on computed tomography (CT) scan images. Different preprocessing steps are applied for resizing, smoothing, and enhancement of the CT images. Then, two different approaches for feature extraction using VGG16 transfer learning and morphological segmentation are proposed. Morphological segmentation and feature extraction are applied for the segmentation of the region of interest and to extract the distinct features. Finally, the proposed deep learning architecture and seven different machine learning algorithms are applied on the preprocessed data and the extracted features for the classification of lung nodules into three classes: malignant, benign, and normal. It is observed that the stacked ensemble model of deep learning convolutional neural network (CNN) and VGG16 transfer learning models (CNN+VGG16) can achieve 99.55% accuracy using preprocessed data. It is also observed that all the ML algorithms perform with reasonably high accuracy using the low-dimensional morphological features. It is observed from the fivefold cross-validation results that logistic regression performs with 99.36% accuracy in 23.71 s time using the preprocessed data. Whereas, using the morphological features, k-nearest neighbor, and the support vector machine perform with the highest accuracy of 99.76% with very reduced computational time of 0.017 and 0.008 s, respectively. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence and Internet of Things (IoT) technology, increasingly edge devices have entered people's daily lives. However, due to the limited performance of edge devices, complex models can affect the response speed and efficiency of the whole system. Existing research still cannot simultaneously satisfy the demand for accuracy and response speed of edge devices. This paper proposes a lightweight and highly accurate object detection model that uses the Transformer to address edge devices' limited computational capacity and storage space. Specifically, the proposed model adopts the Swin Transformer for multi-scale feature extraction to achieve better global modeling capability. In addition, we propose the Neck module with path aggregation network (PAN), which is designed with a two-feature pyramid structure capable of combining semantic and localization information in order to improve the operational performance by exploiting the underlying location features. A lightweight detection head is then developed using group convolution, fusing the two localization branches and removes the additional decoupling operation. Finally, we conduct comparative experiments on three datasets: the Retail-cabinet dataset, the Roadsign dataset, and the Pascal VOC dataset. Experimental results show that compared with the baseline model, our model achieves an 11.8% improvement in mAP on the Retail-cabinet dataset while reducing Params and FLOPs by 23.19% and 71.50%, respectively. The proposed model effectively reduces the model's computational complexity and improves detection performance, thereby possessing high practical value. Microelectronics production failure analysis is an important step in improving product quality and development. In fact, the understanding of the failure mechanisms and therefore the implementation of corrective actions on the cause of the failure depend on the results of this analysis. These analyses are saved under textual features format. Then such data need first to be preprocessed and vectorized (converted to numeric). Second, to overcome the curse of dimensionality caused by the vectorisation process, a dimension reduction is applied. A two-stage variable selection and feature extraction is used to reduce the high dimensionality of a feature space. We are first interested in studying the potential of using an unsupervised variable selection technique, the genetic algorithm, to identify the variables that best demonstrate discrimination in the separation and compactness of groups of textual data. The genetic algorithm uses a combination of the K-means or Gaussian Mixture Model clustering and validity indices as a fitness function for optimization. Such a function improves both compactness and class separation. The second work looks into the feasibility of applying a feature extraction technique. The adopted methodology is a Deep learning algorithm based on variational autoencoder (VAE) for latent space disentanglement and Gaussian Mixture Model for clustering of the latent space for cluster identification. The last objective of this paper is to propose a new methodology based on the combination between variational autoencoder (VAE) for the latent space disentanglement, and genetic algorithm (GA) to find, in an unsupervised way, the latent variables allowing the best discrimination of clusters of failure analysis data. This methodology is called VAE-GA. Experiments on textual datasets of failure analysis demonstrate the effectiveness of the VAE-GA proposed method which allows better discrimination of textual classes compared to the use of GA or VAE separately or the combination of PCA with GA (PCA-GA) or a simple Auto-encoders with GA (AE-GA). Purpose: To propose a new quality scoring tool, METhodological RadiomICs Score (METRICS), to assess and improve research quality of radiomics studies. Methods: We conducted an online modified Delphi study with a group of international experts. It was performed in three consecutive stages: Stage#1, item preparation; Stage#2, panel discussion among EuSoMII Auditing Group members to identify the items to be voted; and Stage#3, four rounds of the modified Delphi exercise by panelists to determine the items eligible for the METRICS and their weights. The consensus threshold was 75%. Based on the median ranks derived from expert panel opinion and their rank-sum based conversion to importance scores, the category and item weights were calculated. Result: In total, 59 panelists from 19 countries participated in selection and ranking of the items and categories. Final METRICS tool included 30 items within 9 categories. According to their weights, the categories were in descending order of importance: study design, imaging data, image processing and feature extraction, metrics and comparison, testing, feature processing, preparation for modeling, segmentation, and open science. A web application and a repository were developed to streamline the calculation of the METRICS score and to collect feedback from the radiomics community. Conclusion: In this work, we developed a scoring tool for assessing the methodological quality of the radiomics research, with a large international panel and a modified Delphi protocol. With its conditional format to cover methodological variations, it provides a well-constructed framework for the key methodological concepts to assess the quality of radiomic research papers. In the past decade, social media networks have received much attention among ordinary people, agencies, and research scholars. Twitter is one of the fastest-growing social media tools. By means of the Twitter application on smartphones, users are able to immediately report events happening around them on a real-time basis. The information disseminated by millions of active users every day generates a new version of a dynamic database that contains information about various topics. Twitter data can be utilized as a major traffic data source along with conventional sensors. In this aspect, this paper presents a novel firefly algorithm-based feature selection with a deep learning model for traffic flow analysis (FFAFS-DLTFA) using Twitter data. The goal of FFAFS-DLTFA is to determine the class labels for tweets as relevant to traffic events. The proposed FFAFS-DLTFA encompasses several processes, such as preprocessing, feature extraction, feature selection, and classification. Primarily, tweets are preprocessed in several ways, such as tokenization, removal of stop words, and stemming. At the same time, three types of embedding vectors, unigram, bigram, and POS features, are used. In addition, the firefly algorithm (FFA) is applied for the optimal selection of feature subsets. Finally, a deep neural network (DNN) model is applied for the identification of tweets into three classes, namely, positive, neutral, and negative. The performance validation of FFAFS-DLTFA takes place using the benchmark Kaggle repository, and the results are inspected under different aspects. Machine health monitoring systems are vital components of modern manufacturing industries. As advanced sensors collecting machine health-related data become commonplace, such systems have started adopting data-driven approaches to harness the collected data. However, dealing with noisy data and gleaning the spatial and temporal correlation within the data is a challenge. Extant literature focuses on the use of feature extraction to judge the state of normal and worn tools. However, the process of detecting the features of worn tools can often damage the workpiece material and result in machine downtime, which increases costs. Using recent developments in artificial intelligence, data features can be used to gauge the condition of tools in real-time. This paper proposes Holistic–Local Long Short-Term Memory (HLLSTM), a deep learning approach that adopts Long Short-Term Memory to predict tool wear based on holistic and local features. The data is divided into segments to learn short-term data features and further divided into holistic training and local training data to extract more implicit feature information to improve the accuracy of tool wear prediction. Image captioning is a widely known problem in the area of AI. Caption generation from floor plan images has applications in indoor path planning, real estate, and providing architectural solutions. Several methods have been explored in the literature for generating captions or semi-structured descriptions from floor plan images. Since only the caption is insufficient to capture fine-grained details, researchers also proposed descriptive paragraphs from images. However, these descriptions have a rigid structure and lack flexibility, making it difficult to use them in real-time scenarios. This paper offers two models, description synthesis from image cue (DSIC) and transformer-based description generation (TBDG), for text generation from floor plan images. These two models take advantage of modern deep neural networks for visual feature extraction and text generation. The difference between both models is in the way they take input from the floor plan image. The DSIC model takes only visual features automatically extracted by a deep neural network, while the TBDG model learns textual captions extracted from input floor plan images with paragraphs. The specific keywords generated in TBDG and understanding them with paragraphs make it more robust in a general floor plan image. In recent years, with the rapid development of artificial intelligence, human activity recognition has become a research focus. The complex, dynamic and variable features of human activities lead to the relatively low accuracy of the traditional recognition algorithms. In order to solve the problem, this paper will propose a novel structure named hierarchical deep LSTM (H-LSTM) based on long short-term memory. Firstly, the original sensor data are preprocessed by smoothing and denoising; then, the feature will be selected and extracted by time–frequency-domain method. Secondly, H-LSTM is applied to the classification of these activities. Three public UCI datasets are used to conduct simulation with the realization of the automatic extraction of feature vectors and classification of outputting recognition results. Finally, the simulation results testify to the outperformance of the H-LSTM network over other deep learning algorithms. The safety of industrial installations requires real-time monitoring of the occurrence of defects in induction machines that are widely used in this field. The implementation of this type of system typically needs to process a large amount of data provided by sensors and thus necessitates high computing mass, which complicates sensor utilization in real time. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical recurrent neural network by stacking two long short-term memory layers to form a single end-to-end network. Trained to establish complex temporal relations in raw time series signals. Those signals are directly provided by the sensors without any preprocessing or hand engineered features extraction. To train the network, we use the stator currents of a three-phase induction motor captured in a steady state. The currents represent several operation modes, which comprise the healthy and failed states with several types of mechanical defects, electrical defects, and combinations thereof. The experimental results were obtained using data from a real test bed to demonstrate the robustness and speed of the proposed approach for real-time monitoring of the operating status of an induction motor. Prognostics and health management (PHM) methods aim at detecting the degradation, diagnosing the faults and predicting the time at which a system or a component will no longer perform its desired function. PHM is based on access to a model of a system or a component using one or combination of physical or data-driven models. In physical-based models, one has to gather a lot of knowledge about the desired system and then build an analytical model of the system function of the degradation mechanism that is used as a reference during system operation. On the other hand, data-driven models are based on the exploitation of symptoms or indicators of degradations using statistical or artificial intelligence methods on the monitored system once it is operational and learn the normal behaviour. Trend extraction is one of the methods used to extract important information contained in the sensory signals, which can be used for data-driven models. However, extraction of such information from the collected data in a practical working environment is always a great challenge as sensory signals are usually multidimensional and obscured by noise. Also, the extracted trends should represent the nominal behaviour of the system as well as the health status evolution. This paper presents a method for nonparametric trend modelling from multidimensional sensory data so as to use such trends in machinery health prognostics. The goal of this work is to develop a method that can extract features representing the nominal behaviour of the monitored component, and from these features, smooth trends are extracted to represent the critical component's health evolution over the time. The proposed method starts by multidimensional feature extraction from machinery sensory signals. Then, unsupervised feature selection on the features' domain is applied without making any assumptions concerning the number of the extracted features. The selected features can be used to represent the nominal behaviour of the system and hence detect any deviation. Then, empirical mode decomposition algorithm is applied on the projected features with the purpose of following the evolution of data in a compact representation over time. Finally, ridge regression is applied to the extracted trend for modelling and can be used later for the remaining useful life prediction. The method is demonstrated on accelerated degradation data set of bearings acquired from PRONOSTIA experimental platform and another data set downloaded from NASA repository where it is shown to be able to extract signal trends. This paper presents a comparison between Artificial Neural Networks and Support Vector Machines in the application of classifying automotive wheels in an industrial environment. Performance of these two approaches over a range of classifier parameters on a data set pre-processed in multiple ways has been evaluated and the results analysed. Learning-based superresolution (SR) is a popular SR technique that uses application dependent priors to infer the missing details in low resolution images (LRIs). However, their performance still deteriorates quickly when the magnification factor is only moderately large. This leads us to an important problem: “Do limits of learning-based SR algorithms exist?” This paper is the first attempt to shed some light on this problem when the SR algorithms are designed for general natural images. We first define an expected risk for the SR algorithms that is based on the root mean squared error between the superresolved images and the ground truth images. Then utilizing the statistics of general natural images, we derive a closed form estimate of the lower bound of the expected risk. The lower bound only involves the covariance matrix and the mean vector of the high resolution images (HRIs) and hence can be computed by sampling real images. We also investigate the sufficient number of samples to guarantee an accurate estimate of the lower bound. By computing the curve of the lower bound w.r.t. the magnification factor, we could estimate the limits of learning-based SR algorithms, at which the lower bound of the expected risk exceeds a relatively large threshold. In this paper, we propose a novel feature learning method named local embedding deep features (LEDF) for person re-identification in camera networks. In order to learn the structural information of pedestrian, we first utilize the verification network that does not require explicit identity labels to obtain the local summing maps. We then combine all local summing maps of a pedestrian image to form the holistic summing map which has the same identity label with the original pedestrian image. Finally, we take the holistic summing maps as the input to train the identification network, and then obtain the LEDF from the last fully connected layer. The proposed LEDF fully considers the structural information by learning the local features and meanwhile possesses strong discriminative ability by learning global features. The experimental results on two large-scale datasets (Market-1501 and CUHK03) demonstrate that the proposed LEDF achieves better results than the state-of-the-art methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
