Besides existing challenges to water management under scarcity in Africa, climate change has the potential to impose additional pressures on water resources. This study aims at reviewing and identifying the climate change signals presented in 61 peer reviewed papers with respect to seven largest African river basins, viz. Nile, Senegal, Volta, Niger, Congo, Zambezi and Limpopo. Thirty percent of the reviewed papers focussed on the Nile basin while only 13% reported on the Congo basin. The climate change signals were segregated into decreasing, increasing and uncertain trends. Results stated the overwhelming tendency for using unmitigated future emission pathways. The use of ensemble models superiors the individual and synthetic scenarios. While projected temperature showed robust increasing trends, rainfall dominated by uncertain trends. The hydrological impacts were assessed through 19 hydrological models with accepted considerations of land uses at 52% of the cases. Modellers managed to understand and build robust rainfall-runoff relationships in Zambezi, Limpopo, Senegal and partially in Niger but failed in Congo and Nile. Climate change impacts on runoff, stream flows and evapotranspiration should be interpreted cautiously. Further researches are recommended to incorporate the effects of human interventions (e.g. dams) and land use changes in climate change-hydrological modelling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates how hydrological drought affected suspended sediment yield (SSY) in the Mediterranean Ofanto River basin, southern Italy, and in its five sub-basins from 1951 to 1989. The Standardized Precipitation Evaporation Index over a scale of 12 months (SPEI12) has been used to compute the hydrological drought in the investigated span of time. SPEI12, mean and maximum monthly discharge (Qmean and Qmax), monthly rainfall erosivity, monthly simple daily intensity index and monthly SSY were used to assess the relationships between dry/wet cycles, streamflow and SSY through the Pearson correlation matrix. Qmean and Qmax are significantly correlated with SSY, while SPEI12 and rainfall intensity do not show good correlation with SSY. Furthermore, from the overall analyses it emerges that sediment yield estimations were higher mainly during the wet period following a period of drought or during a drought period. Global freshwater resources have faced critical water security challenges during the 21st century in the world's river basins. Shortages of water have impaired economic development by disrupting regimes of river flows, ecosystem functioning and food security. Excessive surface and groundwater withdrawals have almost reached the threshold. The current withdrawals of total water (4700 km3·y−1) suggest the imbalance of water use and renewal rates in the world's river basins. The water security issues are further intensified by phosphate and nitrate pollution from land use and climate change. Today, about 400 million people worldwide experience extreme shortages of water for daily use. Limited availability of water which needs to meet the basic needs of hygiene and sanitation for consumption and other uses has increased competition among users. While the society demands more water-intensive goods and services, the ecosystems are however left behind, consequently leading to increased conflicts and insecurity. Equitable water allocation for people and nature is becoming increasingly urgent. However, understanding the complex interactions between the society and nature in the world's river basins is limited. This paper examines an assessment of the impact of climate change on hydrological regimes and water resources in the basin of Siatista, a sub-basin of the Aliakmon river basin, located in Northern Greece. Initially all acquired hydrometeorological data of the study area, as well as the hydrometric data at the outlet of the basin, were analyzed and processed. A monthly conceptual water balance model was then calibrated using historical hydrometeorological data for determining changes in streamflow runoff under two different equilibrium scenarios (UKHI, CCC) referring to the years 2020, 2050 and 2100. It was found that by applying the two scenarios there will be a reduction of the mean winter runoff values, a serious reduction of summer runoff, an increase of maximum annual runoff and a decrease of minimum annual runoff values, an increase of potential and actual evapotranspiration, leading to a decrease of soil moisture, a reduction of snow accumulation and melting due to temperature increases, resulting in a decrease of spring runoff values and a shifting of the wet period towards December, resulting in severe prolongation of the dry period. Projected climate changes integrated into future land-use changes are extremely complex and hard to estimate, especially for basins located in semiarid environments. This work aims to estimate streamflow and the future water yield using climate prediction and land-use changes in the Salgado River basin for the 2030 - 2060 period. In this study, the applicability of the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) and Land Change Modeler models was verified to estimate flows and land use and cover for the studied basin. Calibration and validation of the SWAT model are used on a monthly basis for 1986- 2017, with a calibration period from 1986 to 2006 and a validation period from 2007 - 2017. Land use and cover analysis is performed for the 1985 - 2000 period, and future land use and cover is predicted using the land change model for 2050. In addition, future hydrological modeling of the geographical distribution of the water yield is performed for each subbasin of the Salgado River basin from the 2030 to 2060 period. The results of land use and cover changes show that the pasture class was the one that showed the most significant increase in the basin due to recent changes in land use and cover. The results showed that the HadGEM2-ES model presented a minor difference in the representative concentration pathways (RCP) 2.6, which indicates that this model is the most suitable for rainfall-runoff simulations in the region. The conventional abrupt change-based assessments of climate- and human-induced impacts on streamflow require the existence of change point(s) and stationarity assumption. However, hydrological conditions may not change abruptly at a certain time, but rather evolve gradually over a period. We propose a trend-based time-varying approach that does not require these prerequisites to assess the climate- and human-induced impacts on hydrological conditions in the Pearl River Basin (PRB), China, which can be applied in other basins. The trend-based time-varying approach detects human activities exert a significant seasonal regulation on streamflow (i.e. 113% of the decreases in the wet season and 93% of the increases in the dry season) and 101% of the reductions in flood peaks in the East River Basin, the sub-basin with the highest ratio of total reservoir storage capacity to river discharge in the PRB. Based on a future temperature increase of 0.5°C and precipitation decrease of 25%, the climate elasticity of streamflow to precipitation and temperature changes in 12 Andean watersheds of the Coquimbo Region, north-central Chile, was assessed. Also, the possible relationships between this elasticity and specific physiographic characteristics of the watersheds (area, average elevation, slope distribution, terrain roughness, slope orientation, vegetation cover) were studied. Climate elasticity of streamflow ranged between 0 and 2.8. Watersheds presenting higher elevations, with a fairly well-balanced distribution of slope exposure tend to exhibit lower elasticity, which could be explained by the contribution of snowfall to the hydrological regime, more significant in those watersheds. Results should be considered when downscaling climate model projections at the basin scale in mountain settings. Finally, uncertainties in the approach, given by factors such as streamflow seasonality, data availability and representativeness and watershed characteristics, and therefore the scope of the results, are discussed. In this study, three representative concentration pathways (RCPs) and 15 general circulation models of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 were used to assess the behaviour of precipitation (P) and surface air temperature (SAT) over part of the Songhua River Basin. The Water Evaluation and Planning (WEAP) model linked with SAT and P was used for monthly simulation of streamflow to assess the influence of land use/land cover and climate change on the streamflow. The results suggest that, under RCP2.6, RCP4.5 and RCP8.5, the SAT over the study area may increase in the 21st century by 1.12, 2.44 and 5.82°C, respectively. Moreover, by the middle of the 21st century, streamflow in the basin may have decreased by 19%. The decrease in streamflow may be due to changed land use conditions and water withdrawal, having critical implications for management and future planning of water resources in the basin. The observed multi-annual variability of streamflow for three rivers (Paraná River (PR), Uruguay River (UR) and Negro River (NR)) in La Plata Basin (LPB) during the twentieth century is analysed. Several spectral methods (singular spectrum analysis, maximum entropy method and multi-taper method) are applied to annual and seasonal run-off time series in order to capture low frequency variability (LFV) modes and pseudo-periodic patterns. Very robust quasi-periods in the three to six years band are detected for the three rivers, suggesting a strong link with El Niño-Southern Oscillation. Pseudo-cycles of eight to nine years appear in NR and UR. No quasi-periods above 10 years are obtained for any of the rivers. The three rivers exhibit significant LFV components associated with increasing trends that show a clear seasonality. For PR, LFV modes appear between May and December while for UR this occurs during December to April. Both periods cover the whole annual cycle, giving rise to complementary behaviours in the timing of trends of these two rivers. Remarkably, for the three rivers, the most intense increasing trend and the minimum streamflow occur at the same time of the annual cycle. Six global climate indices are selected in order to analyse the relationship between the multi-year streamflow variability modes in LPB and those of global climate: Niño 3.4 (N3.4), Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO), Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO), Southern Annular Mode (SAM) and Global Temperature Trend (GTT). Similar to the rivers, almost all these indices present very robust modes of variability in the 3–4.5 years band. Except for N3.4 and PDO, the indices show significant LFV modes that exhibit a pronounced increase at the common end of their records. The NAO, AMO and SAM seem to behave in a nearly cyclic way with periods longer than 60 years while the GTT increases steadily along the whole register. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

This contribution analyzes the impact on Iberian water resources of anthropogenic climatic change, using the output from four simulations obtained from two coupled general circulation models (HadCM2 and PCM) under the A2 and B2 emissions scenarios. The results show that the magnitude of those impacts will depend on the level of global warming and the geographical characteristics of each watershed, although a reduction in runoff, principally in spring and summer, and a change in the timing of the maximum discharge, especially in high-altitude basins, will be two the most noteworthy features.
