As a natural "binder," lignin fixes cellulose in plants to foster growth and longevity. However, isolated lignin has a poor binding ability, which limits its biomedical applications. In this study, inspired by mussel adhesive proteins, acidic/basic amino acids (AAs) are introduced in alkali lignin (AL) to form ionic-π/spatial correlation interactions, followed by demethylation to create catechol residues for enhanced adhesion activity. Atomic force microscopy reveals that catechol residues are the primary adhesion structures, with basic AAs exhibiting superior synergistic effects compared to acidic AAs. Demethylated lysine-grafted AL exhibits the strongest adhesion force toward skin tissue. Molecular dynamic simulation and density functional theory calculations indicate that adhesion against skin tissue mainly results from hydrogen bonds and cation-π interactions, with the adhesion mechanism being based on the Gibbs free energy of the Schiff base reaction. In summary, a biomimetic electrode based on lignin inspired by mussel adhesive proteins is prepared; the presented method offers a straightforward strategy for the development of biomimetic adhesives. Enzymatic polymerization of lignosulfonate (LS) has a high potential for various applications ranging from coatings to adhesives. Here, the effect of different ions in low concentrations on enzymatic polymerization of LS was investigated, including salt solutions consisting of mono- and dicarboxylic acids, sulfate, phosphate and chloride with sodium as counter ion. LS polymerization was followed by viscometry and size exclusion (SEC) chromatography. Interestingly, there was only a small effect of ions on the activity of the laccase on standard substrate ABTS, while the effect on polymerization of LS was substantially different. The presence of acetate led to a 39 % higher degree of polymerization (DP) for LS. Small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) revealed that the structure of the enzyme was largely unaffected by the ions, while the determination of the zeta potential showed that those ions conveying higher negative surface charges onto LS particles showed lower DPs, than those not affecting the surface charge. Further, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy showed 5-times higher intensity in phenoxyl radicals for the monovalent ions compared to the divalent ones. Polysulfide shuttle and sluggish sulfur redox kinetics remain key challenges in lithium-sulfur batteries. Previous researches have shown that introducing oxygen into transition metal sulfides helps to capture polysulfides and enhance their conversion kinetics. Based on this, further investigations are conducted to explore the impact of oxygen doping levels on the physical-chemical properties and electrocatalytic performance of MoS 2 . The findings reveal that MoS 2 doped with high-content oxygen exhibits enhanced conductivity and polysulfides conversion kinetics compared to MoS 2 with low-content oxygen doping, which can be attributed to the alteration of crystal structure from 2H-phase to the 1T-phase, the introduction of increased Li-O interactions, and the effect of defects resulting from high-oxygen doping. Consequently, the lithium-sulfur batteries using high-oxygen doped MoS 2 as a catalyst deliver a high discharge capacity of 1015 mAh g -1 at 0.25C and maintain 78.5% capacity after 300 more cycles. Specifically, lithium-sulfur batteries employing paper-based electrodedemonstrate an areal capacity of 3.91 mAh cm -2 at 0.15C, even with sulfur loading of 4.1 mg cm -2 and electrolyte of 6.7 µL mg -1 . Boosting the biomimetic catalytic activity of nanozyme is important for its potential application. One common strategy to achieve this goal mainly focused on manipulating the electronic state of metal site through the first coordination shell to modulate the adsorption/desorption strength of related reactant, intermediate and/or product, but remained challenging. Taking Cu-based catecholase-mimicking nanozyme for example, this work herein reports a different strategy involving amino-induced modulation of electronic state through the second shell to raise the electron density of Cu site, which further triggers the repulsion effect between neighboring geminal Cu centers to increase the Cu─Cu distance. The resulting nanozyme with electron-rich Cu site (DT-Cu) presents a lower work function and an upshifted d-band center in comparison with its counterpart (i.e., relatively electron-deficient TA-Cu), which promotes the electron transfer and enhances the adsorption strengths of Cu site for O 2 , catechol and H 2 O 2 intermediate. The longer Cu─Cu distance of DT-Cu accelerated the O─O bond dissociation of H 2 O 2 intermediate. This expedites the oxygen reduction process during catecholase-like catalysis, which together with the enhanced O 2 /H 2 O 2 /catechol adsorption corporately boosts the catecholase-like activity of DT-Cu., (© 2024 Wiley‐VCH GmbH.)

Metabolic acidosis-induced kidney injury (MAKI) is asymptomatic and lack of clinical biomarkers in early stage, but rapidly progresses to severe renal fibrosis and ultimately results in end-stage kidney failure. Therefore, developing rapid and noninvasive strategies direct responsive to renal tubular acidic microenvironment rather than delayed biomarkers are essential for timely renoprotective interventions. Herein, we develop pH-responsive luminescent gold nanoparticles (p-AuNPs) in the second near-infrared emission co-coated with 2,3-dimethylaleic anhydride conjugated β-mercaptoethylamine and cationic 2-diethylaminoethanethiol hydrochloride, which showed sensitive pH-induced charge reversal and intrarenal self-assembly for highly sensitive and long-time (~24 h) imaging of different stages of MAKI. By integrating advantages of pH-induced intrarenal self-assembly and enhanced interactions between pH-triggered positively charged p-AuNPs and renal tubular cells, the early- and late-stage MAKI could be differentiated rapidly within 10 min post-injection (p.i.) with contrast index (CI) of 3.5 and 4.3, respectively. The corresponding maximum CI could reach 5.1 and 9.2 at 12 h p.i., respectively. Furthermore, p-AuNPs were demonstrated to effectively real-time monitor progressive recovery of kidney injury in MAKI mice after therapy, and also exhibit outstanding capabilities for drug screening. Developing high-performance lignin anti-corrosive waterborne epoxy (WEP) coatings is conducive to the advancement of environmentally friendly coatings and the value-added utilization of lignin. In this work, a functionalized biomass waterborne epoxy composite coating is prepared using quaternized sodium lignosulfonate (QLS) as a functional nanofiller for mild carbon steel protection. The results showed that QLS has excellent dispersion and interface compatibility within WEP, and its abundant phenolic hydroxyl, sulfonate, quaternary ammonium groups, and nanoparticle structure endowed the coating with excellent corrosion inhibition and superior barrier properties. The corrosion inhibition efficiency of 100 mg L -1 QLS in carbon steel immersed in a 3.5 wt% NaCl solution reached 95.76%. Furthermore, the coating maintained an impedance modulus of 2.29 × 10 6  Ω cm 2 (|Z| 0.01 Hz ) after being immersed for 51 days in the high-salt system. In addition, QLS imparted UV-blocking properties and thermal-oxygen aging resistance to the coating, as evidenced by a |Z| 0.01 Hz of 1.04 × 10 7  Ω cm 2 after seven days of UV aging while still maintaining a similar magnitude as before aging. Designing luminophores bright in both isolate species and aggregate states is of great importance in many emerging cutting-edge applications. However, the conventional luminophores either emit in isolate species but quench in aggregate state or emit in aggregate state but darken in isolate species. Here we demonstrate that the precise regulation of noncovalent interactions can realize luminophores bright in both isolate species and aggregate states. It is firstly discovered that the intra-cluster interaction enhances the emission of atomically precise Au 25 (pMBA) 18 (pMBA=4-mercaptobenzoic acid), a nanoscale luminophore, while the inter-cluster interaction quenches the emission. The emission enhancing strategies are then well-designed by both introducing exogenous substances to block inter-cluster interaction and surface manipulation of Au 25 (pMBA) 18 at the molecular level to enhance intra-cluster interaction, opening new possibilities to controllably enhance the luminophore's photoluminescence in both isolate species and aggregate states in different phases including aqueous solution, solid state and organic solvents., (© 2024 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Electrowetting displays (EWDs) based on microfluidics are highly sought after in the fields of electronic devices, smart homes, and information communication. However, the power supply of the EWD systems for visually engaging multi-color displays remains a big challenge. Herein, self-powered colorful dynamic display systems are developed by integrating the triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) with the EWD device. The TENG is designed with a nanotube-patterned surface and can generate open-circuit voltages ranging from 30 to 295 V by controlling the contact area. The wetting property of the micro-droplet exhibits a response to the applied voltage, enabling the triboelectricity-triggered electrowetting-on-dielectric. Driven by the voltage of 160 V, the monochromatic EWD exhibits bright color switching from magenta to transparent with a pixel aperture ratio of 78%, and the recovery process can be rapidly completed. Furthermore, the self-powered colorful dynamic EWD system can be achieved. By selectively applying the voltage to the pixels in the three monochromatic layers that constitute the colorful EWD, the wetting properties of the fluids can be controlled, allowing for colorful dynamic display. Interface modification and bulk doping are two major strategies to improve the photovoltaic performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Dipolar molecules are highly favored due to their unique dipolarity. This review discusses the basic concepts and characteristics of dipoles. In addition, the role of dipoles in PSCs and the corresponding conventional characterization methods for dipoles are introduced. Then, we systematically summarize the latest progress in achieving efficient and stable PSCs in dipole materials at several key interfaces. Guided nanowires grown on polymer surfaces facilitate their seamless integration as flexible devices without post-growth processing steps. However, this is challenging due to the inability of polymer films to provide the required lattice-matching effect. In this work, this challenge is addressed by replicating highly aligned nanogrooves from a compact disc (CD) onto a casted flexible polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) surface. Leveraging the replicated nanogrooves, copper hexadecafluorophthalocyanine (F 16 CuPc) and various metal phthalocyanines are guided into large-area, self-aligned nanowires. Subsequently, by employing specifically designed shadow masks during electrode deposition, these nanowires are seamlessly integrated as either a monolithic flexible photodetector with a large sensing area or on-chip flexible photodetector arrays. The resulting flexible photodetectors exhibit millisecond and long-term stable response to UV-vis-NIR light. Notably, they demonstrate exceptional bending stability, retaining stable and sensitive photoresponse even at a curvature radius as low as 0.5 cm and after enduring 1000 bending cycles. Furthermore, the photodetector array showcases consistent sensitivity and response speed across the entire array. This work not only proves the viability of guided nanowire growth on flexible polymer surfaces by replicating CD nanogrooves but also underscores the potential for large-scale monolithic integration of guided nanowires as flexible devices., (© 2024 The Author(s). Cobalt carbide (Co 2 C) possesses high catalytic efficiency Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS), while the products selectivity appears sensitive to crystallography geometry. Since the Anderson-Schulz-Flory (ASF) distribution in FTS is broken through fabricating facetted Co 2 C nanocrystals, yet the underlying mechanism of Co 2 C crystallization remains unclarified suffering from sophisticated catalyst composition involving promoter agents. Herein, the synthesis of high-purity single-crystal nanoprisms (Co 2 C-p) for highly efficient FTS is reported to lower olefins. Through comprehensive microstructure analysis, e.g., high-resolution TEM, in situ TEM and electron diffraction, as well as finite element simulation of gas flow field, for the first time the full roadmap of forming catalytic active cobalt carbides is disclosed, starting from reduction of Co 3 O 4 precursor to CoO intermediate, then carburization into Co 2 C-s and subsequent ripening growth into Co 2 C-p. This gas-induced engineering of crystal phase provides a new synthesis strategy, with many new possibilities for precise design of metal-based catalyst for diverse catalytic applications., (© 2024 The Author(s). Cellulose ferulate, synthesized by Mitsunobu reaction, is shaped into thin films and also used as an aqueous dispersion to perform artificial lignin polymerization on anchor groups. This biomimetic approach is carried out in a Quartz crystal microbalance with a dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) device to enable online monitoring of the dehydrogenation, applying H 2 O 2 and adsorbed horseradish peroxidase (HRP). The systematic use of phenylpropanoids with different oxidation states, i.e., ferulic acid, coniferyl aldehyde, coniferyl alcohol, and eugenol allowed to conclude structure-property relationships. Both the deposited material, as well as the surface roughness increased with the hydrophobicity of the monomers. Beyond surface characterizations, py-GC-MS, HSQC NMR spectroscopy and Size exclusion chromatography (SEC) measurements revealed the linkage types β-β, β-5, 5-5, and β-O-4, as well as the oligomeric character of the dehydrogenation products. Photo-rechargeable zinc-ion batteries (PRZIBs) have attracted much attention in the field of energy storage due to their high safety and dexterity compared with currently integrated lithium-ion batteries and solar cells. However, challenges remain toward their practical applications, originating from the unsatisfactory structural design of photocathodes, which results in low photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE). Herein, a flexible MoS 2 /SnO 2 -based photocathode is developed via constructing a sunflower-shaped light-trapping nanostructure with 3D hierarchical and self-supporting properties, enabled by the hierarchical embellishment of MoS 2 nanosheets and SnO 2 quantum dots on carbon cloth (MoS 2 /SnO 2 QDs@CC). This structural design provides a favorable pathway for the effective separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and the efficient storage of Zn 2+ on photocathodes. Consequently, the PRZIB assembled with MoS 2 /SnO 2 QDs@CC delivers a desirable capacity of 366 mAh g -1 under a light intensity of 100 mW cm -2 , and achieves an ultra-high PCE of 2.7% at a current density of 0.125 mA cm -2 . In practice, an integrated battery system consisting of four series-connected quasi-solid-state PRZIBs is successfully applied as a wearable wristband of smartwatches, which opens a new door for the application of PRZIBs in next-generation flexible energy storage devices., (© 2024 The Authors. Molecular motor amphiphiles have already been widely attempted for dynamic nanosystems across multiple length-scale for developments of small functional materials, including controlling macroscopic foam properties, amplifying motion as artificial molecular muscles, and serving as extracellular matrix mimicking cell scaffolds. However, limiting examples of bola-type molecular motor amphiphiles are considered for constructing macroscopic biomaterials. Herein, this work presents the designed two second generation molecular motor amphiphiles, motor bola-amphiphiles (MBAs). Aside from the photoinduced motor rotation of MBAs achieved in both organic and aqueous media, the rate of recovering thermal helix inversion step can be controlled by the rotor part with different steric hindrances. Dynamic assembled structures of MBAs are observed under (cryo)-transmission electron microscopy (TEM). This dynamicity assists MBAs in further assembling as macroscopic soft scaffolds by applying a shear-flow method. Upon photoirradiation, the phototropic bending function of MBA scaffolds is observed, demonstrating the amplification of molecular motion into macroscopic phototropic bending functions at the macroscopic length-scale. Since MBAs are confirmed with low cytotoxicity, human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hBM-MSCs) can grow on the surface of MBA scaffolds. 2D lamellar nanofiltration membrane is considered to be a promising approach for desalinating seawater/brackish water and recycling sewage. However, its practical feasibility is severely constrained by the lack of durability and stability. Herein, a ternary nanofiltration membrane via a mixed-dimensional assembly of 2D boron nitride nanosheets (BNNS) is fabricated, 1D aramid nanofibers (ANF), and 2D covalent organic frameworks (COF). The abundant 2D and 1D nanofluid channels endow the BNNS/ANF/COF membrane with a high flux of 194 L·m ‒2 ·h ‒1 . By the synergies of the size sieving and Donnan effect, the BNNS/ANF/COF membrane demonstrates high rejection (among 98%) for those dyes whose size exceeds 1.0 nm. Moreover, the BNNS/ANF/COF membrane also exhibits remarkable durability and mechanical stability, which are attributed to the strong adhesion and interactions between BNNS, ANF, and COF, as well as the superior mechanical robustness of ANF. The in-depth understanding of the composition-property-performance relationship of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) is the basis of developing a reliable SEI to stablize the Zn anode-electrolyte interface, but it remains unclear in rechargeable aqueous zinc ion batteries. Herein, a well-designed electrolyte based on 2 M Zn(CF 3 SO 3 ) 2 -0.2 M acrylamide-0.2 M ZnSO 4 is proposed. A robust polymer (polyacrylamide)-inorganic (Zn 4 SO 4 (OH) 6 .xH 2 O) hybrid SEI is in situ constructed on Zn anodes through controllable polymerization of acrylamide and coprecipitation of SO 4 2- with Zn 2+ and OH - . For the first time, the underlying SEI composition-property-performance relationship is systematically investigated and correlated. The results showed that the polymer-inorganic hybrid SEI, which integrates the high modulus of the inorganic component with the high toughness of the polymer ingredient, can realize high reversibility and long-term interfacial stability, even under ultrahigh areal current density and capacity (30 mA cm -2 ~30 mAh cm -2 ). The resultant Zn||NH 4 V 4 O 10 cell also exhibits excellent cycling stability. Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) are usually modified and passivated to improve their performance and stability. The interface modification and bulk doping are the two basic strategies. Fluorine (F)-containing materials are highly favored because of their unique hydrophobicity and coordination ability. This review discusses the basic characteristics of F, and the basic principles of improving the photovoltaic performance and stability of PSC devices using F-containing materials. We systematically summarized the latest progress in the application of F-containing materials to achieve efficient and stable PSCs on several key interface layers. Sorption-based atmospheric water harvesting is an attractive technology for exploiting unconventional water sources. A critical challenge is how to facilitate fast and continuous collection of potable water from air. Here, a bio-based gel (cellulose/alginate/lignin gel, CAL gel), resulting from the integration of a whole biomass-derived polymer network with lithium chloride is reported. A fast adsorption/desorption kinetics, with a water capture rate of 1.74 kg kg -1 h -1 at 30% relative humidity and a desorption rate of 1.98 kg kg -1 h -1 , is simultaneously realized in one piece of CAL gel, because of its strong hygroscopicity, hydrophilic network, abundant water transport channels, photothermal conversion ability, and ≈200-µm-thick self-supporting bulky structure caused by multicomponent synergy. A solar-driven, drum-type, tunable, and portable harvester is designed that can harvest atmospheric water within a brief time. Under outdoor conditions, the harvester with CAL gels operates 36 switches (180°) per day realizes a water yield of 8.96 kg kg gel -1 (18.87 g kg device -1 ). Recent work has demonstrated that temporary crosslinks in polymer networks generated by chemical "fuels" afford materials with large, transient changes in their mechanical properties. This can be accomplished in carboxylic-acid-functionalized polymer hydrogels using carbodiimides, which generate anhydride crosslinks with lifetimes on the order of minutes to hours. Here, the impact of the polymer network architecture on the mechanical properties of transiently crosslinked materials was explored. Single networks (SNs) were compared to interpenetrated networks (IPNs). Notably, semi-IPN precursors that give IPNs on treatment with carbodiimide give much higher fracture energies (i.e., resistance to fracture) and superior resistance to compressive strain compared to other network architectures. A precursor semi-IPN material featuring acrylic acid in only the free polymer chains yields, on treatment with carbodiimide, an IPN with a fracture energy of 2400 J/m 2 , a fourfold increase compared to an analogous semi-IPN precursor that yields a SN. This resistance to fracture enables the formation of macroscopic complex cut patterns, even at high strain, underscoring the pivotal role of polymer architecture in mechanical performance., (© 2024 The Authors. The guided-growth strategy has been widely explored and proved its efficacy in fabricating surface micro/nanostructures in a variety of systems. However, soft materials like polymers are much less investigated partly due to the lack of strong internal driving mechanisms. Herein, the possibility of utilizing liquid crystal (LC) ordering of smectic liquid crystal polymers (LCPs) to induce guided growth of surface topography during the formation of electrohydrodynamic (EHD) patterns is demonstrated. In a two-stage growth, regular stripes are first found to selectively emerge from the homogeneously aligned region of an initially flat LCP film, and then extend neatly along the normal direction of the boundary line between homogeneous and homeotropic alignments. The stripes can maintain their directions for quite a distance before deviating. Coupled with the advanced tools for controlling LC alignment, intricate surface topographies can be produced in LCP films starting from relatively simple designs. The regularity of grown pattern is determined by the LC ordering of the polymer material, and influenced by conditions of EHD growth. This research presents a new approach to facilely fabricating a multifunctional film using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the base material. The film is modified chemically to incorporate various desirable properties such as high transparency, UV-shielding, antibacterial activity, and fluorescence. The fabrication process of this film is straightforward and efficient. The modified film showed exceptional UV-blocking capability, effectively blocking 100% of UV radiation. It also exhibits strong antibacterial properties. Additionally, the film emitted bright blue fluorescence, which can be useful in various optical and sensing applications. Despite the chemical modification, the film retained the excellent properties of PVA, including high transparency (90%) at 550 nm and good mechanical strength. Furthermore, it demonstrated remarkable stability even under harsh conditions such as exposure to long-term UV radiation, extreme temperatures (-40 or 120 °C), or immersion in different solvents. Overall, this work showcases a promising strategy to develop versatile, structurally stable, transparent, and flexible polymer films with multiple functionalities. Solar-driven interfacial evaporation is recognized as a sustainable and effective strategy for desalination to mitigate the freshwater scarcity issue. Nevertheless, the challenges of oil contamination, salt accumulation, and poor long-term stability of the solar desalination process limit its applications. Herein, a 3D biomass-based multifunctional solar aerogel evaporator is developed for water production with fabricated chitosan/lignin (CSL) aerogel as the skeleton, encapsulated with carbonized lignin (CL) particles and Ti 3 C 2 Ti X (MXene) nanosheets as light-absorbing materials. Benefitting from its super-hydrophilic wettability, interconnected macropore structure, and high broadband light absorption (ca. 95.50%), the prepared CSL-C@MXene-20 mg evaporator exhibited a high and stable water evaporation flux of 2.351 kg m -2 h -1 with an energy conversion efficiency of 88.22% under 1 Sun (1 kW m -2 ) illumination. Current DES pretreatment is often performed under relatively severe conditions with high temperature, long time, and high DES usage. This work studied a short-time diol DES (deep eutectic solvent) pretreatment under mild conditions to fractionate the bamboo, facilitate enzymatic hydrolysis, and obtain high-quality lignin. At an optimized condition of 130 °C for only 10 min, lignin and xylan removal reached 61.34 % and 84.15 %, with residual glucan showing a ~90 % enzymatic hydrolysis yield. Equally important, the dissolved lignin could be readily recovered with 97.51 % yield, exhibiting 96.65 % β-O-4 preservation. The fractionation and lignin protection mechanisms were unveiled by XRD, FTIR, cellulose-DP, 2D HSQC NMR, 31 P NMR and GPC analysis. As the core index, how to improve bioavailability of loaded cargoes is a hot topic of drug carriers. In this study, aminated β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) as a cross-linking points is first integrated into 3D poly(acrylamide-co-acrylonitrile) (P(AAm-co-AN)) network to build up a unique submicrocage (466.2 ± 47.6 nm), featuring upper critical solution temperature (UCST; ≈40 °C), high volume expansion coefficient, and excellent biocompatibility. Hereinto, hydrophobic β-elemene (ELE) is locally loaded in β-CD with high loading efficiency (8.72%) and encapsulation efficiency (78.60%) through hydrophobic desolvation and host-guest interaction. Above UCST, the release of the loaded ELE is accelerated to 72.87% in 24 h, together with the enhanced sensitization effect of synergized radiotherapy. Different forms of HCOOH in the depolymerization system play an important role in governing the monomeric products from lignin. We reported two strategies for the introduction of HCOOH to enrich the monophenols from kraft lignin by microwave-assisted depolymerization. The reaction of lignin models showed that HCOOH was in favor of the cleavage of C-O bonds (β-O-4 typically) and partial C-C bonds (C α -C β ). Subsequently, Microwave-assisted depolymerization of lignin with two strategies was conducted via a designed dynamic vapor flow reaction system. Strategy A with HCOOH as pretreatment solvent showed excellent monophenols enrichment with total mass yields of 193.71 mg/g (lignin basis). Strategy B using HCOOH as reforming solvent vapor significantly increased the monophenols selectivity. It presented unique reforming and upgrading performance by generating catechol (42.59 mg/g, lignin basis) and homovanillic acid (17.58 mg/g, lignin basis). In frigid regions, it is imperative to possess functionality materials that are ultrastrong, reusable, and economical, providing self-generated heat and electricity. One promising solution is a solar‒thermal‒electric (STE) generator, composed of solar‒thermal conversion phase change composites (PCCs) and temperature-difference power-generation-sheets. However, the existing PCCs face challenges with conflicting requirements for solar‒thermal conversion efficiency and mechanical robustness, mainly due to monotonous functionalized aerogel framework. Herein, a novel starch vitrimer aerogel is proposed that incorporates orientational distributed carboxylated carbon nanotubes (CCNT) to create PCC. This innovative design integrates large through-holes, mechanical robustness, and superior solar‒thermal conversion. Remarkably, PCC with only 0.8 wt.% CCNT loading achieves 85.8 MPa compressive strength, 102.4 °C at 200 mW cm -2 irradiation with an impressive 92.9% solar-thermal conversion efficiency. Noteworthy, the STE generator assembled with PCC harvests 99.1 W m -2 output power density, surpassing other reported STE generators. Strikingly, even under harsh conditions of -10 °C and 10 mW cm ‒2 irradiation, the STE generator maintains 20 °C for PCC with 325 mV output voltage and 45 mA current, showcasing enhanced electricity generation in colder environments. Transparent paper manufactured from wood fibers is emerging as a promising, cost-effective, and carbon-neutral alternatives to plastics. However, fully exploring their mechanical properties is one of the most pressing challenges. In this work, a strong yet tough transparent paper with superior folding endurance is prepared by rationally altering the native fiber structure. Microwave-assisted choline chloride/lactic acid deep eutectic solvent (DES) pulping is first utilized to isolate wood fibers from spruce wood. During this process, the S1 layer within the fibers is partially disrupted, forming protruding microfibrils that play a crucial role in enhancing cellulose accessibility. Subsequently, carboxymethylation treatment is applied to yield uniformly swollen carboxymethylated wood fibers (CM fibers), which improves the interaction between CM fibers during papermaking. The as-prepared transparent paper not only shows a 90% light transmittance (550 nm) but also exhibits impressive mechanical properties, including a folding endurance of over 26 000, a tensile strength of 248.4 MPa, and a toughness of 15.6 MJ m -3 . Despite the first observations that the perforin can punch holes in target cells for live/dead cycles in the human immune system over 110 years ago, emulating this behavior in materials science remains challenging. Here, a perforin-mimicking molecular drilling strategy is employed to engineer macroporous hollow lignin spheres as performance-configurable catalysts, adhesives, and gels. Using a toolbox of over 20 molecular compounds, the local curvature of amphiphilic lignin is modulated to generate macroporous spheres with hole sizes ranging from 0 to 100 nm. Multiscale control is precisely achieved through noncovalent assembly directing catalysis, synthesis, and polymerization. Exceptional performance mutations correlate with the changes in hole size, including an increase in catalytic efficiency from 50% to 100%, transition from nonstick synthetics to ultrastrong adhesives (adhesion ≈18.3 MPa, exceeding that of classic epoxies), and transformation of viscous sols to tough nanogels. The rational design of bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts with unique morphology and luxuriant porous structure is significant but challenging for accelerating the reaction kinetics of rechargeable Zn-air batteries (ZABs). Herein, zinc-mediated Fe, N-codoped carbon nanocages (Zn-FeNCNs) are synthesized by pyrolyzing the polymerized iron-doped polydopamine on the surface of the ZIF-8 crystal polyhedron. The formation of the chelate between polydopamine and Fe serves as the covering layer to prevent the porous carbon nanocages from collapsing and boosts enough exposure and utilization of metal-based active species during carbonization. Furthermore, both the theoretical calculation and experimental results show that the strong interaction between polyhedron and polydopamine facilitates the evolution of high-activity zinc-modulated FeNx sites and electron transportation and then stimulates the excellent bifunctional catalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). As expected, the Zn-air battery with Zn-FeNCNs as an air cathode displays a superior power density (256 mW cm -2 ) and a high specific capacity (813.3 mA h gZn -1 ), as well as long-term stability over 1000 h. FAPbI 3 perovskites have garnered considerable interest owing to their outstanding thermal stability, along with near-theoretical bandgap and efficiency. However, their inherent phase instability presents a substantial challenge to the long-term stability of devices. Herein, this issue through a dual-strategy of self-assembly 3D/0D quasi-core-shell structure is tackled as an internal encapsulation layer, and in situ introduction of excess PbI 2 for surface and grain boundary defects passivating, therefore preventing moisture intrusion into FAPbI 3 perovskite films. By utilizing this method alone, not only enhances the stability of the FAPbI 3 film but also effectively passivates defects and minimizes non-radiative recombination, ultimately yielding a champion device efficiency of 23.23%. Furthermore, the devices own better moisture resistance, exhibiting a T 80 lifetime exceeding 3500 h at 40% relative humidity (RH). Meanwhile, a 19.51% PCE of mini-module (5 × 5 cm 2 ) is demonstrated. The intrinsic poor rheological properties of MXene inks result in the MXene nanosheets in dried MXene microfibers prone to self-stacking, which is not conducive to ion transport and diffusion, thus affecting the electrochemical performance of fiber-based supercapacitors. Herein, robust cellulose nanofibrils (CNF)/MXene hybrid fibers with high electrical conductivity (916.0 S cm -1 ) and narrowly distributed mesopores are developed by wet spinning. The interfacial interaction between CNF and MXene can be enhanced by hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction due to their rich surface functional groups. The interfacial modulation of MXene by CNF can not only regulate the rheology of MXene spinning dispersion, but also enhance the mechanical strength. Furthermore, the interlayer distance and self-stacking effect of MXene nanosheets are also regulated. Thus, the ion transport path within the fiber material is optimized and ion transport is accelerated. In H 2 SO 4 electrolyte, a volumetric specific capacitance of up to 1457.0 F cm -3 (1.5 A cm -3 ) and reversible charge/discharge stability are demonstrated. Intriguingly, the assembled supercapacitors exhibit a high-volume energy density of 30.1 mWh cm -3 at 40.0 mW cm -3 . Moreover, the device shows excellent flexibility and cycling stability, maintaining 83% of its initial capacitance after 10 000 charge/discharge cycles. In this work, it is reported that zirconium oxide (ZrO 2 ) doped organosilica nanodots (OSiNDs: ZrO 2 ) with light- and charge-management properties serve as efficient cathode interlayers for high-efficiency inverted organic solar cells (i-OSCs). ZrO 2 doping effectively improves the light harvesting of the active layer, the physical contact between the active layer, as well as the electron collection property by habiting charge recombination loss. Consequently, all devices utilizing the OSiNDs: ZrO 2 cathode interlayer exhibit enhanced power conversion efficiency (PCE). Specifically, i-OSCs based on PM6:Y6 and PM6:BTP-eC9 achieve remarkable PCEs of 17.16% and 18.43%, respectively. Liposomes serve as promising and versatile vehicles for drug delivery. Tracking these nanosized vesicles, particularly in vivo, is crucial for understanding their pharmacokinetics. This study introduces the design and synthesis of three new conjugated electrolyte (CE) molecules, which emit in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II), facilitating deeper tissue penetration. Additionally, these CEs, acting as biomimetics of lipid bilayers, demonstrate superior compatibility with lipid membranes compared to commonly used carbocyanine dyes like DiR. To counteract the aggregation-caused quenching effect, CEs employ a twisted backbone, as such their fluorescence intensities can effectively enhance after a fluorophore multimerization strategy. Notably, a "passive" method was employed to integrate CEs into liposomes during the liposome formation, and membrane incorporation efficiency was significantly promoted to nearly 100%. To validate the in vivo tracking capability, the CE-containing liposomes were functionalized with cyclic arginine-glycine-aspartic acid (cRGD) peptides, serving as tumor-targeting ligands. Clear fluorescent images visualizing tumor site in living mice were captured by collecting the NIR-II emission. Uniquely, these CEs exhibit additional emission peak in visible region, enabling in vitro subcellular analysis using routine confocal microscopy. The high oxygen electrocatalytic overpotential of flexible cathodes due to sluggish reaction kinetics result in low energy conversion efficiency of wearable zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Herein, lignin, as a 3D flexible carbon-rich macromolecule, is employed for partial replacement of polyacrylonitrile and constructing flexible freestanding air electrodes (FFAEs) with large amount of mesopores and multi-hollow channels via electrospinning combined with annealing strategy. The presence of lignin with disordered structure decreases the graphitization of carbon fibers, increases the structural defects, and optimizes the pore structure, facilitating the enhancement of electron-transfer kinetics. This unique structure effectively improves the accessibility of graphitic-N/pyridinic-N with oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity and pyridinic-N with oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity for FFAEs, accelerating the mass transfer process of oxygen-active species. The resulting N-doped hollow carbon fiber films (NHCFs) exhibit superior bifunctional ORR/OER performance with a low potential difference of only 0.60 V. The rechargeable ZABs with NHCFs as metal-free cathodes possess a long-term cycling stability. Furthermore, the NHCFs can be used as FFAEs for flexible ZABs which have a high specific capacity and good cycling stability under different bending states. Biomass-based hydrogels have attracted great attention in flexible and sustainable self-powered power sources but struggled to fabricate in a green, high-efficiency, and low-cost manner. Herein, a novel and facile alkali-polyphenol synergetic self-catalysis system is originally employed for the fast gelation of self-healable and self-adhesive lignin-based conductive hydrogels, which can be regarded as hydrogel electrodes of flexible triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs). This synergy self-catalytic system comprises aqueous alkali and polyphenol-containing lignin, in which alkali-activated ammonium persulfate (APS) significantly accelerates the generation of radicals and initiates the polymerization of monomers, while polyphenol acts as a stabilizer to avoid bursting polymerization from inherent radical scavenging ability. Furthermore, multiple hydrogen bonds between lignin biopolymers and polyacrylamide (PAM) chains impart lignin-based hydrogels with exceptional adhesiveness and self-healing properties. Sustainable long-lived room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials with color-tunable afterglows are attractive but rarely reported. Here, cellulose is reconstructed by directed redox to afford ample active hydroxyl groups and water-solubility; arylboronic acids with various π conjugations can be facilely anchored to reconstructed cellulose via click chemistry within 1 min in pure water, resulting in full-color tunable RTP cellulose. The rigid environment provided by the B─O covalent bonds and hydrogen bonds can stabilize the triplet excitons, thus the target cellulose displays outstanding RTP performances with the lifetime of 2.67 s, phosphorescence quantum yield of 9.37%, and absolute afterglow luminance of 348 mcd m -2 . Furthermore, due to the formation of various emissive species, the smart RTP cellulose shows excitation- and time-dependent afterglows. The development of advanced magnesium metal batteries (MMBs) has been hindered by longstanding challenges, such as the inability to induce uniform magnesium (Mg) nucleation and the inefficient utilization of Mg foil. This study introduces a novel solution in the form of a flexible, lightweight, paper-based scaffold that incorporates gradient conductivity, magnesiophilicity, and pore size. This design is achieved through an industrially adaptable papermaking process in which the ratio of carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotubes to softwood cellulose fibers is meticulously adjusted. The triple-gradient structure of the scaffold enables the regulation of Mg ion flux, promoting bottom-up Mg deposition. Owing to its high flexibility, low thickness, and reduced density, the scaffold has potential applications in flexible and wearable electronics. Accordingly, the triple-gradient electrodes exhibit stable operation for over 1200 h at 3 mA cm -2 /3 mAh cm -2 in symmetrical cells, markedly outperforming the non-gradient and metallic Mg alternatives. Notably, this study marks the first successful fabrication of a flexible MMB pouch full cell, achieving an impressive volumetric energy density of 244 Wh L -1 . Flexible perovskite solar cells (F-PSCs) have emerged as promising alternatives to conventional silicon solar cells for applications in portable and wearable electronics. However, the mechanical stability of inherently brittle perovskite, due to residual lattice stress and ductile fracture formation, poses significant challenges to the long-term photovoltaic performance and device lifetime. In this paper, to address this issue, a dynamic "ligament" composed of supramolecular poly(dimethylsiloxane) polyurethane (DSSP-PPU) is introduced into the grain boundaries of the PSCs, facilitating the release of residual stress and softening of the grain boundaries. Remarkably, this dynamic "ligament" exhibits excellent self-healing properties and enables the healing of cracks in perovskite films at room temperature. The obtained PSCs have achieved power conversion efficiencies of 23.73% and 22.24% for rigid substrates and flexible substrates, respectively, also 17.32% for flexible mini-modules. Notably, the F-PSCs retain nearly 80% of their initial efficiency even after subjecting the F-PSCs to 8000 bending cycles (r = 2 mm), which can further recover to almost 90% of the initial efficiency through the self-healing process. The proton-coupled electron transfer(PCET) reaction plays a crucial role in the chemical transformation process andhas become one of the most concerned elementary reactions. However, the complex kinetics of PCET reaction, which requires the simultaneous transfer of protons and electrons, leads to the dilemma that thermodynamics and kinetics cannot bebalanced and restricts its further development. In this, an interface micro-electric field (IMEF) basedon Fe─N 4 in FeMOFs (Fe-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks) glass is designed tosynchronize proton/electron interface behavior for the first time to realizeefficient PCET reaction and optimize reaction thermodynamics and kinetics. The IMEF facilitates the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes, and accelerates Fe(III)/Fe(II) cycle. Driven by near-surface electric field force, the protons near surfacemigrate to Fe sites and participate in Fe(IV)═O formation and reaction, lowering the reaction energy barrier. Based on the interface regulation ofIMEF, a high-efficiency PCET reaction is realized, and kinetic reactionrate constant of photocatalytic oxidation of emerging contaminants is increasedby 3.7 times. Achieving superior photomineralization of pollutants relies on a rational design of a dual S-scheme with a robust internal electric field (IEF). In this study, to tackle the low mineralization rate in type-II In 2 O 3 /In 2 S 3 (IO/IS) systems, an organic-inorganic dual S-scheme In 2 O 3 /PDI/In 2 S 3 (IO/PDI/IS) nanostructured photocatalyst is synthesized via a method combining solvent-induced self-assembly and electrostatic forces. Due to the unique energy band position and strong IEF, the photoinduced defect-transit dual S-scheme IO/PDI/IS facilitates the degradation of lignin and antibiotics. Notably, a promising mineralization rate of 80.9% for sodium lignosulfonate (SL) is achieved. The charge transport pathway of IO/PDI/IS are further validated through the analysis of in situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (in situ XPS), density functional theory calculations, and radical trapping experiments. In-depth, two possible pathways for the photocatalytic degradation of lignin are proposed based on the intermediates monitored by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The interplay between immune cells/macrophages and fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLSs) plays a pivotal role in initiating synovitis; however, their involvement in metabolic disorders, including diabetic osteoarthritis (DOA), is largely unknown. In this study, single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) is employed to investigate the synovial cell composition of DOA. A significant enrichment of activated macrophages within eight distinct synovial cell clusters is found in DOA synovium. Moreover, it is demonstrated that increased glycolysis in FLSs is a key driver for DOA patients' synovial macrophage infiltration and polarization. In addition, the yes-associated protein 1 (YAP1)/thioredoxin-interacting protein (TXNIP) signaling axis is demonstrated to play a crucial role in regulating glucose transporter 1 (GLUT1)-dependent glycolysis in FLSs, thereby controlling the expression of a series of adhesion molecules such as intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) which may subsequently fine-tune the infiltration of M1-polarized synovial macrophages in DOA patients and db/db diabetic OA mice. For treatment, M1 macrophage membrane-camouflaged Verteporfin (Vt)-loaded PLGA nanoparticles (MVPs) are developed to ameliorate DOA progression by regulating the YAP1/TXNIP signaling axis, thus suppressing the synovial glycolysis and the infiltration of M1-polarized macrophages. The adaptive control of sunlight through photochromic smart windows could have a huge impact on the energy efficiency and daylight comfort in buildings. However, the fabrication of inorganic nanoparticle and polymer composite photochromic films with a high contrast ratio and high transparency/low haze remains a challenge. Here, a solution method is presented for the in situ growth of copper-doped tungsten trioxide nanoparticles in polymethyl methacrylate, which allows a low-cost preparation of photochromic films with a high luminous transparency (luminous transmittance T lum = 91%) and scalability (30 × 350 cm 2 ). High modulation of visible light (ΔT lum = 73%) and solar heat (modulation of solar transmittance ΔT sol = 73%, modulation of solar heat gain coefficient ΔSHGC = 0.5) of the film improves the indoor daylight comfort and energy efficiency. Simulation results show that low-e windows with the photochromic film applied can greatly enhance the energy efficiency and daylight comfort. Hygroscopic salt-based composite sorbents are considered ideal candidates for solar-driven atmospheric water harvesting. The primary challenge for the sorbents lies in exposing more hygroscopically active sites to the surrounding air while preventing salt leakage. Herein, a hierarchically structured scaffold is constructed by integrating cellulose nanofiber and lithium chloride (LiCl) as building blocks through 3D printing combined with freeze-drying. The milli/micrometer multiscale pores can effectively confine LiCl and simultaneously provide a more exposed active area for water sorption and release, accelerating both water sorption and evaporation kinetics of the 3D printed structure. Compared to a conventional freeze-dried aerogel, the 3D printed scaffold exhibits a water sorption rate that is increased 1.6-fold, along with a more than 2.4-fold greater water release rate. An array of bilayer scaffolds is demonstrated, which can produce 0.63 g g -1 day -1 of water outdoors under natural sunlight. Nanofiber is the critical building block for many biological systems to perform various functions. Artificial assembly of molecules into nanofibers in a controllable and reversible manner will create "smart" functions to mimic those of their natural analogues and fabricate new functional materials, but remains an open challenge especially for nature macromolecules. Herein, the controllable and reversible assembly of nanofiber (CSNF) from natural macromolecules with oppositely charged groups are successfully realized by protonation and deprotonation of charged groups. By controlling the electrostatic interaction via protonation and deprotonation, the size and morphology of the assembled nanostructures can be precisely controlled. A strong electrostatic interaction contributes to large nanofiber with high strength, while poor electrostatic interaction produces finer nanofiber or nanoparticle. And especially, the assembly, disassembly, and reassembly of the nanofiber occurs reversibly through protonation and deprotonation, thereby paving a new way for precisely controlling the assembly process and structure of nanofiber. The reversible assembly allows the nanostructure to dynamically reorganize in response to subtle perturbation of environment. The as-prepared CSNF is mechanical strong and can be used as a nano building block to fabricate high-strength film, wire, and straw. Next generation on-skin electrodes will require soft, flexible, and gentle materials to provide both high-fidelity sensing and wearer comfort. However, many commercially available on-skin electrodes lack these key properties due to their use of rigid hardware, harsh adhesives, uncomfortable support structures, and poor breathability. To address these challenges, this work presents a new device paradigm by joining biocompatible electrospun spider silk with printable liquid metal to yield an incredibly soft and scalable on-skin electrode that is strain-tolerant, conformable, and gentle on-skin. These electrodes, termed silky liquid metal (SLiM) electrodes, are found to be over five times more breathable than commercial wet electrodes, while the silk's intrinsic adhesion mechanism allows SLiM electrodes to avoid the use of harsh artificial adhesives, potentially decreasing skin irritation and inflammation over long-term use. Finally, the SLiM electrodes provide comparable impedances to traditional wet and other liquid metal electrodes, offering a high-fidelity sensing alternative with increased wearer comfort. Human subject testing confirmed the SLiM electrodes ability to sense electrophysiological signals with high fidelity and minimal irritation to the skin. Current techniques of lignin conversion are challenged by the low carbon utilization efficiency resulting from the severe generation of residual solid (char). Therefore, a better understanding of pathway for char formation is significant and highly desired for lignin valorization. In this work, we propose a fundamental mechanistic insight into char formation in lignin depolymerization, using hydrothermal decomposition as model reaction. The results demonstrate that the char featuring a multi-layer construction of coke and oligomer contains mainly G units, primarily generated from native G-lignin and demethoxylation of S-lignin. Instead, H-lignin contributes to the formation of volatile monophenols. Furthermore, new methylene bridges form between the benzene rings in lignin, which consequently results in the formation of recalcitrant char. Introducing fluorine (F) groups into a passivator plays an important role in enhancing the defect passivation effect for the perovskite film, which is usually attributed to the direct interaction of F and defect states. However, the interaction between electronegative F and electron-rich passivation groups in the same molecule, which may influence the passivation effect, is ignored. We herein report that such interactions can vary the electron cloud distribution around the passivation groups and thus changing their coordination with defect sites. By comparing two fluorinated molecules, heptafluorobutylamine (HFBM) and heptafluorobutyric acid (HFBA), we find that the F/-NH 2 interaction in HFBM is stronger than the F/-COOH one in HFBA, inducing weaker passivation ability of HFBM than HFBA. Accordingly, HFBA-based perovskite solar cells (PSCs) provide an efficiency of 24.70 % with excellent long-term stability. Moreover, the efficiency of a large-area perovskite module (14.0 cm 2 ) based on HFBA reaches 21.13 %. Two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework (MOF) membranes are considered potential gas separation membranes of the next generation due to their structural diversity and geometrical functionality. However, achieving a rational structure design for a 2D MOF membrane and understanding the impact of MOF nanosheet stacking modes on membrane separation performance remain challenging tasks. Here, we report a novel kind of 2D MOF membrane based on [Cu 2 Br(IN) 2 ] n (IN=isonicotinato) nanosheets and propose that synergetic stacking modes of nanosheets have a significant influence on gas separation performance. The stacking of the 2D MOF nanosheets is controlled by solvent droplet dynamic behaviors at different temperatures of drop coating. Our 2D MOF nanosheet membranes exhibit high gas separation performances for H 2 /CH 4 (selectivity >290 with H 2 permeance >520 GPU) and H 2 /CO 2 (selectivity >190 with H 2 permeance >590 GPU) surpassing the Robeson upper bounds, paving a potential way for eco-friendly H 2 separation., (© 2023 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Smart-response materials with ultralong room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) are highly desirable, but they have rarely been described, especially those originating from sustainable polymers. Herein, a variety of cellulose derivatives with 1,4-dihydropyridine (DHP) rings are synthesized through the Hantzsch reaction, giving impressive RTP with a long lifetime of up to 1251 ms. Specifically, the introduction of acetoacetyl groups and DHP rings promotes the spin-orbit coupling and intersystem crossing process; and multiple interactions between cellulose induce clustering and inhibit the nonradiative transitions, boosting long-live RTP. Furthermore, the resulting transparent and flexible cellulose films also exhibit excitation-dependent and color-tunable afterglows by introducing different extended aromatic groups. More interestingly, the RTP performance of these films is sensitive to water and can be repeated in response to wet/dry stimuli. Inspired by these advantages, the RTP cellulose demonstrates advanced applications in information encryption and anti-counterfeiting. Silicon (Si) is regarded as one of the most promising anode materials for high-performance lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, how to mitigate its poor intrinsic conductivity and the lithiation/delithiation-induced large volume change and thus structural degradation of Si electrodes without compromising their energy density is critical for the practical application of Si in LIBs. Herein, an integration strategy is proposed for preparing a compact micron-sized Si@G/CNF@NC composite with a tight binding and dual-encapsulated architecture that can endow it with superior electrical conductivity and deformation resistance, contributing to excellent cycling stability and good rate performance in thick electrode. At an ultrahigh mass loading of 10.8 mg cm -2 , the Si@G/CNF@NC electrode also presents a large initial areal capacity of 16.7 mA h cm -2 (volumetric capacity of 2197.7 mA h cm -3 ). When paired with LiNi 0.95 Co 0.02 Mn 0.03 O 2 , the pouch-type full battery displays a highly competitive gravimetric (volumetric) energy density of ≈459.1 Wh kg -1 (≈1235.4 Wh L -1 )., (© 2023 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)
