There is an urgent need for energy sources with lower environmental impacts to dispose of waste generated by human activities. In this context, a holistic analysis of energy use of waste from agricultural and forestry activities, animal excreta, urban solid waste and sewage, waste from the pulp and paper industry and charcoal in Brazil is presented. Based on a bibliographic review, the current Brazilian panorama is presented in figures giving, a vision of national potential for harnessing bioenergy from this theoretical and technical potential. The QGIS3.24.2 Tisler geoprocessing tool was used to generate potentiality maps from census data of microregions and municipalities available in the IBGE database (2022) and in the Geocentric Reference System for the Americas (SIRGAS 2000). The results of map analysis by micro‐regions of the primary energy from agricultural residues highlight sugar cane, corn and soybeans crops, followed by wastewater and animal excreta. They stood out amont the studied sources of biomass with technical potentials of 53.17, 15.23 and 6.81 GW, respectively. With these results, it is concluded that Brazil could enable around 75 GW installed power, reusing all biomass, potentially 12.5 PJ, without considering the 16 GW already installed from sugarcane and paper black liquor plants. Since the 1970s, Brazil has carried out the most successful world program of commercial biomass for use and production of energy by stimulating its sugarcane industry and promoting the large-scale production of ethanol nationwide in response to the first oil shock. Today, the technologies behind ethanol production are well established. Brazil is the world's largest sugarcane supplier, producing its ethanol at a competitive price. If other sugarcane producing countries decided to join Brazil's move toward the production of this biofuel, what impacts might there be for each country's economy and employment? This is what we investigate in this paper. Prime candidates for ethanol production include Australia, China, Colombia, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Pakistan, the Philippines, Thailand, and the United States of America. We evaluated the potential socioeconomic impacts of developing this promising industry by using an input–output approach. More specifically, we adapted the Brazilian method of producing ethanol to these countries' distinct economies. We augmented the input–output table of each country, inserting a new ethanol industry based on the Brazilian ethanol production model. We also augmented their new ethanol industry's sales following a hypothetical hydrous and anhydrous ethanol consumption scenario. Thereafter, we reconcile the national accounts, concluding our analysis by quantifying and comparing the different net effects of this new industry for each of the assessed countries for the year of 2009. We demonstrate which industries would be expected to be positively or negatively impacted by this substitution in each country; and find that not all of the countries we assessed would experience positive socioeconomic results from emulating Brazil's production of ethanol. Crop canopy optical reflectance and ultrasonic sensors provide a means of estimating the spatial variability of biomass and nitrogen uptake by sugarcane during the in-season period. The objective of this paper is to assess the crop canopy reflectance and ultrasonic crop height for predicting sugarcane biomass and N-uptake until the later fertilization stages. An ultrasonic sensor was deployed to measure canopy height, which were combined with optical reflectance sensor to characterize the spatial variability of the crop growth in four commercial fields in southeast Brazil during three different growing stages for dry and wet seasons. Ten sampling location points in each field were defined to determine plant biomass and N-uptake through traditional measurements. The points in each field were used to relate the actual biomass and N-uptake with the sensor data and compare them using the coefficient of determination and standard errors; this defined the best approach in each situation according to the multivariable statistics. It was found that both sensor systems enable to correlate its data with sugarcane biomass and N-uptake. Canopy reflectance sensor produced a better assessment of crop growth at the earlier growth stage whereas the ultrasonic sensor resulted in more accurate predictions at the later growing stages. It was proven that canopy height is season dependent whereas the reflectance data is growth stage dependent. The integration of both sensing systems improved the predictions of sugarcane biomass and N-uptake. A crucial aspect analysed during the last years, aiming to improve sugarcane production, is the impact of climate change on sugarcane productivity. One of the strategies to mitigate climate change's impact on sugarcane yield is the development of new varieties known to positively affect crop production. This paper analysed how climate change impacts sugarcane production regarding the different planted varieties. Data regarding sugarcane harvest were collected from a cooperative in the south of Goiás state—Brazil, the second biggest national sugarcane producer. Results indicate that climate impact on sugarcane yield is irrelevant when controlling for different varieties. Considering the results presented in this work, the Brazilian government should keep the incentives for the development of new sugarcane varieties and, at the same time, spur sugarcane producers to use the new sugarcane varieties. The results imply that if the variety is correctly chosen, sugarcane can be produced without harming the environment, contributing to reaching SDG 15. Moreover, it is less probable that an adverse climatic event will destroy the planted area, preventing sugarcane producers from severe loss and contributing to achieving SDGs number 1 and 2. However, ethanol production only increased significantly with the National Program of Ethanol implementation in 1975. This program was another action taken by the Brazilian government aiming to provide conditions for the development of the ethanol industry in the country. With the program, it was possible to achieve significant progress; however, it finished in the mid-1980s. Currently, ethanol is produced on a large scale by more than 300 sugarcane mills all over the country. In 2016, the Brazilian government provided another incentive for ethanol production by creating the RenovaBio Program, which aimed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Besides the environmental aspect, Brazil's ethanol industry needs to develop to supply future biofuel demand. According to the forecast provided in this paper, and considering technical, economic, and environmental aspects regarding the Brazilian ethanol industry, the current and only feedstock used is likely to be insufficient. After harvest, usually a significant amount of crop residues are available and part of it can be a feedstock for biomass energy. This paper's objective is to quantify sustainable residual biomass from corn harvesting, husk leaf, and cob, and its solid-fuel characterization for energy co-generation assessment. The methodology considers geographical distributions of corn production on a municipal basis, at Mato Grosso do Sul (MS) State in Brazil. Residual biomass from corn harvest has its mass fractions and energy characteristics determined via proximate and ultimate analyzes, bulk density, and heating values. Also, assessment of energy and power obtained by using co-generation power plants technology. The conclusions identify that residual biomass from corn harvest (husk leaf and cob) have large amounts available for energy use (~190.106 kg), and a main one geographic micro-region at MS. Its characteristics as solid fuel, i.e., HHV~18 MJ.kg-1 and TMC,db <10%, as well as high availability for oxygen for combustion (TO ~43%) and low ash content (TAsh < 4%) corroborate with its energy use, as in co-firing with sugarcane bagasse or coal thermal power plants. Bulk density values suggest densification as an interesting option for the commercialization of pellets or briquettes. Assessment of energy and power has a significant contribution to the Dourados micro-region (~2 GWElectric) and could attend farm and other rural energy demands through co-generation power plants. This paper aims to evaluate the integration of corn in existent sugarcane mills in Brazil to increase ethanol production. The study considered an autonomous distillery factory of medium‐capacity, and the incremental benefits from corn processing during the sugarcane off‐season. A process simulation and a cost analysis were developed to estimate the technoeconomic feasibility. The data and parameters employed were in accordance with Brazilian practice. The results show that a sugarcane plant operating 4 months during the off‐season with corn requires an investment of US$ 13.4 million, obtained the return of investment in 4 years, and a revenue estimated in US$ 666K yr−1 due to ethanol surplus production. Bioethanol production in Brazil gained momentum in the 1970s and 1980s as an energy security and energy sufficiency measure due to the well‐known world oil crisis. However, the increase in bioethanol production and consumption in the past couple of decades has been backed by the country's efforts and measures to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the transport sector. Brazil is the second largest producer of biofuels, and its production continues to increase because of the commitments made in the Paris Agreement in 2015. This study reviews several key policies designed to develop Brazilian bioethanol production and to protect the environment. It is argued that many of these policies do not consider land use change or encourage land protection to achieve sustainable land use and agricultural production. Thus, this work aims to understand the importance and impacts of public policies in expanding sugarcane in Brazil in the past 34 years, with regard to land use and native vegetation. The discussion in this paper addresses the inadequacy of current policies to avoid direct and indirect land use change caused by sugarcane expansion, despite incentives such as 17 Sustainable Development Goals from the United Nations and certification schemes. The data presented indicate an indirect effect caused by the expansion of sugarcane over pasture areas, which leads to further clearing of natural vegetation to establish new pasture areas. Ultimately, this study addresses the importance of zero deforestation in Brazil, regardless of the crop that causes the conversion. A major challenge for humankind is to reduce global carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to avoid the most harmful impacts of climate change. The transport sector is responsible for almost 1/4 of the world's energy-related emissions, with road transportation representing around 1/5 of the fuel consumption. Electric vehicles (EVs) may help to reduce CO2 emissions, but their diffusion is uncertain due to market barriers. This paper investigates the electric vehicle (EV), which has a smaller ecological footprint, as an alternative capable of meeting the needs of personal transport in Brazil. To carry out this evaluation, the study considers socio-techno-economic and political-environmental-innovation aspects to assess the challenges and opportunities facing the adoption of electric vehicles. The analysis was carried out based on a survey administered to a wide range of stakeholders. A SWOT analysis was performed to understand the most critical factors affecting the future of EVs in Brazil, which is a top-ten automotive manufacturer worldwide and a leader in sugar cane ethanol production. The results suggest light-duty electric vehicles (LDEV) as a first option for low-carbon passengers' mobility and that EVs expansion will require market regulation, incentive policies and adequate charging infrastructure. Both consumers and society in general will benefit most from the expansion of EVs due to low emissions and total cost of ownership (TCO). Cogeneration systems have gained prominence in recent years driven by the simultaneous systematic production of heat and electricity, which are involved in industrial and commercial processes. Sugar and alcohol industry has become a reference in the use of cogeneration through the burning of sugarcane bagasse, with an important role in the future policies for generation expansion in Brazil. However, in the economic evaluation of this type of project, some previously ignored variables had a gain of relevance, such as the possibility of selling surplus energy produced by the plant. This paper presents a multiobjective stochastic optimization model using stochastic dynamic dual programming techniques, which seeks to maximize net revenue of a cogeneration project, indicating also the installed power adequate to the fuel availability and the needs of the plant, considering different energy scenarios in the spot market. The results indicate the best configuration for a cogeneration plant, considering the possibility of energy revenue, allowing an easy cost comparison of different alternatives for decision making from the investor's point of view. Sugarcane ethanol is an alternative to fossil fuels that can mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and offer socioeconomic benefits, but at the same time have a series of negative impacts. Brazil is the second largest producer of fuel ethanol globally, with this production predicted to almost double over the next 15 years. However sugarcane ethanol production in the country has been shown to interact with a range of ecosystem services. It is only when such interactions are understood that we can fully determine the potential trade-offs, synergies and sustainability outcomes of biofuel production in the country. This paper explores the local perceptions about the impacts of sugarcane production on ecosystem services in two municipalities in the state of Sao Paulo with significant sugarcane production: Capivari and Rancharia. Impact perceptions have been elicited through interviews with local residents, with the results showing that perceptions vary between the two study sites and are affected considerably by the different local experiences with sugarcane production. For example, although sugarcane farming has been traditionally performed in Capivari, it has been Rancharia that has experienced more recently a rapid sugarcane expansion that has caused considerable changes in land use and farming patterns. Interview results also suggest that the negative effects of sugarcane farming can be reduced through the adoption of good agricultural practices and the enforcement of existing laws, as many respondents cited considerable improvements in ecosystem health from such actions. Assessing the perception of local communities such as the one reported in this paper can be crucial in designing policies and planning land uses that enhance the sustainability of biofuel production. The shift from a fossil-based to a bio-based economy (bioeconomy) requires more efficient utilization of the biomass generated from agricultural production. This can be achieved through the cascading use of biomass, which also offers the potential of creating additional value from biomass by developing novel products. Taking sugarcane as a case study example, this paper aims to analyze how well Brazil, the world’s leader in sugarcane production, is positioned to reach these goals. The paper combines two conceptual tools: one is the ‘biomass-based value web’, which was developed as an extension of the value chain concept with the aim to capture the links within and between value chains that arise from the cascading and joined use of biomass. The other concept is that of the ‘national innovation system’ (NIS), which serves to identify the different types of actors involved in the biomass value web and the linkages between them. For empirical data collection, the study combined three methods: a mapping of the physical biomass flows in the value web, in-depth interviews with the actors involved, and the application of the ‘Net-Map’ tool to identify the actors in the NIS and their linkages. The findings show that the development of Brazil’s international competitiveness in sugar and ethanol was based on political incentives that resulted in a strong network of institutions that focused on these two products. However, to become a front-runner in the future bioeconomy, the existing innovation network needs to be expanded. In particular, it is important to integrate national and international private sector organizations. The findings also suggest that industries need stronger incentives to collaborate with knowledge institutions. Long-term consistent policies and funding opportunities for risky investments are also required to further strengthen Brazil’s innovation network to meet future opportunities and challenges of the bioeconomy. Sugarcane mills currently use sugarcane bagasse to cogenerate heat and electricity, supplying the process with mechanical, thermal and electrical energy. Some of these plants are able to produce surplus electricity to export to the national grid. With the improvement in collection techniques, sugarcane straw has also become available and has been used in some mills as fuel for steam boilers, mixed with sugarcane bagasse. However, due to different traits compared to bagasse, the use of sugarcane straw may pose additional problems of incrustation and corrosion on heat exchange surfaces. Several alternatives and technologies have been studied and tried out in order to increase the production of surplus electricity. Among others, biomass integrated gasifier–gas turbine combined cycle (BIGCC) is a promising technology. However, several attempts have resulted in failure, whether on a pilot or industrial scale. Biomass gasification integrated with internal combustion engines can become an opportunity for generation of small power capacity (<15 MW) and integrated to sugarcane mills. This paper analyzes the difficulties and barriers to increasing electricity generation in the sugarcane industry through studies, projects and experimental and industrial-scale installations that have already been carried out. • Bagasse and cane straw show great potential for electricity generation. • Sugarcane industry in Brazil accounts for 6.4% of the electricity generated. • Biomass integrated gasification and combined cycle can increase electricity generation. • Technological and economic challenges are major barriers to the development of BIGCC. • No BIGCC project already implemented is currently in commercial operation. Biorefineries can upgrade waste lignocellulosic biomass (LB) into soluble (C5 and C6) sugars that can be fermented into second‐generation (2G) ethanol‐based biofuels and a range of valuable byproducts derived from lignin. Research advances made in various laboratories worldwide have not been easy to translate into large‐scale operations. Here, we performed a simple economic analysis of cellulosic ethanol production from a stand‐alone 100ton dry sugarcane bagasse per day process, from a Brazilian market perspective, based on current state‐of‐the‐art biorefinery process technologies. Economic analysis reveals that the cost of manufacturing (COM) of 2G ethanol in an annexed Brazilian facility is close to USD 1.33 L−1. Fixed and variable costs contributed 57% and 24% in COM of 2G ethanol with a high payback period of ~31 years and a negative net present value (NPV). Further cost reduction can be realized by continuous R&D efforts aiming for innovation in new processing paradigms for cellulosic biorefineries. The key market players (Poet‐DSM, DuPont, Abengoa, Beta Renewables, Raizen, Granbio, Praj, etc.) and other new emerging players (Global Yeast, Taurus Energy, Leaf, Mascoma‐Lallemand) working on ethanologen development, and cellulase producers (Novozyme, Metgen), should also develop partnerships / joint ventures to establish a sustainable business model to develop cost‐competitive 2G ethanol production from bagasse in Brazil. The ethanol production chain is a complex system with a considerable number of actors and relationships. While Brazil stands out as a major producer of sugarcane ethanol, the production model in the north-eastern and southern regions is typically formed by small and medium production units, mostly associated to family-farming and associative production. This feature changes the relationships and profiles of the production chain, requiring understanding for the development of appropriate environmental, political, economic, social, ethical, and technological actions. This paper systemically maps variables that act in ethanol production chain in Southern Brazil, seeking to understand the interrelationships among its actors. Data collection was based on a review of the technical and academic literature and semi-structured interviews with different experts and actors of the chain. Systems dynamics diagrams model how the chain is configured and the main cause-effect interrelationships between the actors identified. Scenario analysis supports the analysis and discussion of the modelled context, seeking to contribute to the discussion about the competitiveness and economic sustainability of biofuel chains integrating associative production and family-farming. Ketchup is a popular tomato-based sauce also containing differing proportions of sugar and vinegar. While tomato is a plant with the C 3 photosynthetic metabolism, sugarcane is a tropical grass with C 4 photosynthesis, used in Brazil as feedstock for sugar and alcohol vinegar production. Sugarcane derivatives are often widely used in the Brazilian food industry. In this paper, we investigated the relative isotopic proportion of C 3 and C 4 -derived products in 25 ketchup brands commercialized in Brazil, through the carbon (C) isotopic ratio (δ13C). The aim was to identify the contribution of tomatoes to the final ketchup composition, as the manufacturers do not provide this information to the consumer. The overall δ13C mean in the analyzed ketchup was –16.2 ± 1.4 ‰, suggesting a predominance of C 4 - over C 3 -derived sources in these brands. Using a Bayesian isotopic dilution model, we estimated that approximately 75 % of the carbon source of ketchup comes from C 4 plants (p < 0.05). A low correlation between ketchup price and δ13C was found, probably because price reflects attributes such as brand and, not necessarily, product composition. In addition, our study also presents a robust regressive predictive model of the sugar percentages in the final ketchup composition. Combining these approaches, consistent tools can be incorporated to evaluate ketchup quality. The rise in global demand for ethanol has caused an expansion of ethanol mills into new areas to increase supply. Ethanol mills are supply-oriented firms; thus, they seek locations near agricultural feedstocks to ensure access and to reduce transaction costs. In Brazil, the rise of ethanol production has been more significant in the states of Goiás and Mato Grosso do Sul. Expansion of the sugarcane ethanol industry into this new frontier is a challenge because sugarcane is not a traditional crop in this region. The purpose of this paper is to understand the factors determining the location decision of ethanol mills in new producing areas. For the analysis, we focus on the new sugarcane ethanol plants in Goiás and Mato Grosso do Sul, we developed a probit and a spatial autoregressive probit model that incorporates agricultural conditions, distance to markets, infrastructure, and policy. The results indicate that counties with agricultural tradition have a higher probability of a mill locating there (0.0918). The presence of rural syndicates in a county increases the likelihood of a mill deciding to locate in that county by 0.083. The county's distance to an operating mill in 2002 decreases in 0.00006 the probability of a new mill locating in that county. Policymakers should focus on policies that promote the institutional organization of producers, development of the transportation infrastructure, and utilize the agricultural tradition to attract new mills. Ethanol production has increased over the years, and Brazil ranking second in the world using sugarcane as the main raw material. However, 10–15 L of vinasse are generated per liter of ethanol produced. Besides large volumes, this wastewater has high polluting potential due to its low pH and high concentrations of organic matter and nutrients. Given the high biodegradability of the organic matter, the treatment of this effluent by anaerobic digestion and membrane separation processes results in the generation of high value-added byproducts such as volatile fatty acids (VFAs), biohydrogen and biogas. Membrane bioreactors have been widely evaluated due to the high efficiency achieved in vinasse treatment. In recent years, high retention membrane bioreactors, in which high retention membranes (nanofiltration, reverse osmosis, forward osmosis and membrane distillation) are combined with biological processes, have gained increasing attention. This paper presents a critical review focused on high retention membrane bioreactors and the challenges associated with the proposed configurations. For nanofiltration membrane bioreactor (NF-MBR), the main drawback is the higher fouling propensity due to the hydraulic driving force. Nonetheless, the development of membranes with high permeability and anti-fouling properties is uprising. Regarding osmotic membrane bioreactor (OMBR), special attention is needed for the selection of a proper draw solution, which desirably should be low cost, have high osmolality, reduce reverse salt flux, and can be easily reconcentrated. Membrane distillation bioreactor (MDBR) also exhibit some shortcomings, with emphasis on energy demand, that can be solved with the use of low-grade and residual heat, or renewable energies. Among the configurations, MDBR seems to be more advantageous for sugarcane vinasse treatment due to the lower energy consumption provided by the use of waste heat from the effluent, and due to the VFAs recovery, which has high added value. Abstract: This paper discusses the complementarity between hydroelectricity and surplus electricity from sugarcane biomass-based cogeneration plants in sugarcane mills. The paper investigates opportunities and barriers in the context of governments'' initiatives, institutions and prevailing regulatory frameworks in Brazil and Nepal. The paper finds that bioelectricity from cogeneration can be a good complementary option for hydroelectric power, helping foster diversification on the generation side and enhance security of electricity supply based on local resources. Bioelectricity potential from sugarcane biomass is estimated to be in the range of 209–313 GWh for Nepal and 62–93 TWh for Brazil. In Nepal, the grid connected bioelectricity can provide power for operating industries, and support local development through rural electrification. In Brazil, the biomass potential can be further enhanced through a better utilization of the biomass in the sugar-ethanol industry to balance hydropower availability. This comparative study offers a reflection on the need for better planning and policies to address the barriers which are hindering the development of bioelectricity even in places where the potential is large. Abstract: While biofuels have currently been regarded as a good alternative for fossil fuels, there remain many debates on their impacts on human and environment. This paper tried to shed light on bio-ethanol in Brazil as one of the main producers and exporters in the world. The main question was to understand “how sustainable is bio-ethanol production in Brazil?” To answer, the political motives of producing bio-ethanol followed by its ecological and socio-economic impacts were discussed. This paper presents a techno-economic evaluation of potential Greenfield projects of integrated first- and second-generation sugarcane biorefineries, in which ethanol is converted to bio-based propylene through metathesis of ethylene with 2-butene. Two scenarios were tested, considering improvements both in first- and second-generation ethanol production: with and without pentoses fermentation, which increases the amount of ethanol produced. The viability of the proposed propylene production facility was studied through Minimum Bio-Propylene Selling Price ( MBSP), and sensitivity and risk analysis were performed. Results show that, compared to the average propylene prices in recent years, the MBSP (based on the average estimates) would be no more than 85-90% higher than the price of the conventional fossil-fuel based product. In addition, three aspects were further assessed: (i) scaling of production plants, (ii) learning effects, and (iii) policies that would result lower capital costs. Brazil is one of the major players in the biofuels market worldwide, and its existing biorefining infrastructure can be used as the basis to support the implementation of new advanced biofuel production routes at a large scale. This paper demonstrates the benefits of the integration of both biochemical and thermochemical processes and how this configuration has the potential to overcome the main barriers that the Biomass-to-Liquids (BtL) route currently faces. Important bottlenecks such as the high equipment costs, low industrial process efficiency, and high feedstock prices were studied in detail by assessing a series of production scenarios that take into account the Brazilian context for building new biorefinery plants. By carrying out a techno-economic analysis aided by a simulation framework (the Virtual Sugarcane Biorefinery), we evaluated the potential technological synergies of a BtL plant processing sugarcane bagasse and straw integrated into a first-generation sugarcane ethanol distillery. Results in this paper indicate that it is possible to achieve economic feasibility with the implementation of the BtL route in the country. Under a base scenario, a greenfield plant would be very close to the range of economic viability (IRR from 10 to 12% per year), whereas more optimistic economic conditions (e.g., lower CAPEX and higher fuel prices) would induce even better results (IRR greater than 16% per year). Gaining information about detailed processes using aggregation information is a frequent challenge in research involving geospatial data, with examples in different fields of knowledge such as agronomy, soil science, meteorology, public health, epidemiology, and others. Analyses using aggregated data lead to distorted conclusions since they disregard local patterns, and such a problem has motivated different approaches for reconstructing the information in a finer resolution from the aggregated data. However, most existing methods focus on the particular case where the volume of data does not exceed the amount of memory available for computations, a situation that has become increasingly less frequent with the fast pace of data generation nowadays. In practice, this problem limits either spatial resolution or coverage of applications, thus precluding their use in a more general context. In this paper, we address the problem of disaggregation of spatial data with huge datasets by proposing a scalable method to estimate the parameters of a well-established model. We propose an iterative scheme for model estimation and prove its convergence to a critical point of the likelihood function derived. To test the method, we provide a controlled simulation and a real example for sugarcane production in Brazil. In the simulation, the results indicate a successful reconstruction of 1 million pixels from 90 block areas. In the real example, the results had a compatible match with the agronomic literature, indicating a reasonable prediction of sugarcane production in a 100 m spatial resolution (i.e., approx. 5 × 1 0 8 pixels) from 5,565 block-areas. Compared to the most similar previous work, scalability allowed us to use a nearly 100 times higher resolution, which corresponds to 10,000 times more pixels. The biorefinery concept provides a wide perspective of products and uses from the biomass conversion. The drive for cost reductions and the threat of food competition have put residual biomass under the spotlight. Sugarcane is the most produced crop in the world, and its residual bagasse has got the additional feature of abundance. Going beyond its traditional use for electricity and thermal generation, this paper explores the potential alternative uses for the sugarcane bagasse in Brazil. Under an Input-Output perspective, Brazilian production recipes are obtained for six distinct biorefining technologies assuming the use of sugarcane bagasse as feedstock. Also, minimum selling prices are derived for the main products of each technological route assessed, comprising an initial estimative of their cost prices in Brazil. The biomass to ethanol and higher alcohol route presented the higher share (25%) of productive and service sectors into its production recipe. The bioplatform succinic acid route was the only one reaching competitive minimum selling prices (0.57 US$/kg) in comparison to current pricing of the fossil-derived succinic acid. The potential for sugarcane ethanol from Brazil to mitigate GHG emissions is undeniable, but the way that ethanol is produced during the agricultural and industrial phases will ultimately determine its benefits to society. In this paper, we evaluate the environmental impacts of sugarcane agriculture and ethanol production in Brazil as management practices continue to change and production expands to new frontiers. We focused our evaluation on the impacts on water, atmosphere, and soils, including how the application of organic and inorganic fertilizers and the accumulation of crop residue in the field affect emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG). We also addressed the impacts of land use changes on threatened biomes and discussed some of the present obstacles regarding conservation and restoration efforts. We concluded that, since a similar assessment was put forth in 2008, our knowledge about the environmental impacts of sugarcane ethanol in Brazil has advanced with regard to soil degradation, nitrogen dynamics, and soil carbon stocks. However, more information is still needed about the impacts of the increasing use of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers in sugarcane agriculture, especially on water resources. Furthermore, without a better understanding about how landscape fragmentation affects the biodiversity of terrestrial and aquatic tropical ecosystems and the services they provide, policies created to protect and restore them may be ineffective. On the other hand, the use of presently available scientific information to end unsustainable farming and the implementation of conservation strategies proposed by the Brazilian Forest Code could be a first step to guarantee that ethanol is produced more sustainably in Brazil. Brazil seeks to rapidly increase its agricultural production to meet future demands, especially for sugarcane, which is an agricultural commodity and a biofuel source. In this paper, we explore how to achieve this increase without compromising existing forestlands. We propose that it is possible to substantially expand sugarcane production in Brazil while avoiding further environmental losses and the indirect land use changes often associated with them, such as deforestation. This task could be accomplished by converting existing pasturelands with agricultural potential into cropland. A great deal of pastureland exists in Brazil. Thus, we addressed the following questions in this study: (1) where are the most suitable pasturelands for sugarcane located geographically and (2) what potential do these pasturelands have for sugarcane production regarding their physical suitability and other significant factors, such as infrastructure availability and socioeconomic factors. We conducted a land suitability analysis using a spatial location model based on multicriteria decision-making and geographic information systems (GIS) to identify the cultivated pasturelands most suitable for conversion to sugarcane production in Brazil. “What if” scenarios were built to determine how changes in the subjectively derived weights of the priority criteria would modify the spatial distribution of the suitability classes relative to the MCDA model and demonstrate the robustness of the crop suitability assessment. The most suitable pastureland areas for conversion to sugarcane production were predominantly located in Minas Gerais, São Paulo, Paraná, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, Mato Grosso and Pará. These zones have large contiguous areas of pasture with moderate and high agricultural potentials for sugarcane production. The total estimated area of cultivated pasturelands with moderate or high suitability for sugarcane production was 50 million hectares, which is much larger than the area currently used for sugarcane production in Brazil. This paper presents an economic outlook of the ethanol industry in Brazil considering different biomass feedstocks and different industrial processing options. A spreadsheet model was designed to account for different feedstocks and industrial processes, and expected trends in biomass yield, sugar- and fibre content, industrial scale and efficiency. Sugarcane and energycane cultivation costs may be reduced from 35 US$ 2010 /TC in 2010 to 27 US$ 2010 /TC and 22 US$ 2010 /TC in 2030 respectively. Eucalyptus and elephant grass cultivation costs could be reduced from 32 to 23 US$ 2010 /tonne wet and 38 to 26 US$ 2010 /tonne wet for eucalyptus and elephant grass. Total ethanol production costs of first generation processing may decrease from 700 US$ 2010 /m 3 in 2010, to 432 US$ 2010 /m 3 in 2030. First generation ethanol production costs may decrease by reduced feedstock costs, increase in sugar content, utilization of cane trash, and use of sweet sorghum. Furthermore, the improvement in industrial efficiency of the first generation process, increasing industrial scale and change to an improved technology are other measures. For second generation technology utilizing eucalyptus, the total ethanol production costs could be strongly reduced to 424 US$ 2010 /m 3 in 2030. Costs reduction measures for second generation industrial processing include reduced feedstock costs, increasing industrial efficiency and scale, and a change to more advanced industrial process. Overall, biomass yield, increase in sugar content of sugarcane, and improved industrial efficiency are important parameters in total ethanol production costs. The replacement of fossil fuels by biofuels has been extremely important worldwide to stimulate the growth of economies based on the sustainability through the use of renewable resources. Anaerobic digestion for biogas production is recognized as a clean technology that allies the suitability of wastes with energy generation, fulfilling the requirements for a sustainable alternative to provide the optimization of the biofuels production. This alternative is especially interesting for the sugarcane ethanol production in Brazil, in which the generation of vinasse, the main liquid waste, is very expressive. Nevertheless, the use of vinasse for anaerobic digestion has been finding some challenges to its establishment in the Brazilian sugarcane biorefineries. This paper reviews the actual context of anaerobic digestion within the sugarcane ethanol production in Brazil, presenting the main obstacles for its full application and the directions to promote it as well. Alternatives for biogas use are also presented and compared, highlighting the environmental and energy advantages of applying anaerobic digestion in the sugarcane biorefineries. This scenario is envisaged as a suitable way to achieve the future biorefineries model, based on the use and recovery of renewable resources with economic, social, and environmental benefits. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the potential for using the retentate from nanofiltration (NF) treatment of thermomechanical pulp (TMP) effluent for fertirrigation. Nanofiltration retentates from tertiary effluent treatment from a Brazilian TMP pulp mill were used. Electrical conductivity (EC) and the concentration of both metals (Mn2+, Mg2+, Fe2+, Ca2+, Na+, K+, Cu2+) and chlorides in the NF retentate were evaluated. The sodium (SAR) and potassium (PAR) adsorption ratios were calculated. The risks of increasing the salinity, effects on the infiltration rate, toxicity and excess nutrients were evaluated according to the American and European standards, and application according to crop and soil were analyzed according to the Brazilian standard. The NF retentate is classified as irrigation water Class I for the risks of reduced water infiltration into the soil, availability of nutrients and the concentration of copper and iron, Class II for the risks of toxicity, pH and concentration of manganese and Class III for the risks of salinity and concentrations of TS, TSS and turbidity, according to American and European standards. The salinity content and the physicochemical characteristics classify the effluent NF retentate, according to the Brazilian standard, as fresh water and Class III for irrigation. The NF retentate from thermomechanical pulp mill effluents, according to both the American and the European standards, cannot be used for fertirrigation, as it is classified as Class III. However, the Brazilian standard allows its use for the irrigation of any tree species, cereals and forages and as a source of nutrients to reduce fertilizer use. The retentate can be applied to highly salt-tolerant plant crops such as Eucalyptus globulus , Eucalyptus camaldulensis and sugarcane, and may be used in soil with a basic pH and high permeability. • A bibliometric review relating soil quality and sugarcane was performed. • Concerns about soil quality in sugarcane cultivation have increased in recent years. • Brazil was responsible for 62 % of the publications about soil quality in sugarcane. • Within soil science, land use and management was the category most studied. • Soil quality in sugarcane cultivation needs to be assessed in an integrated manner. Environmental sustainability is attracting attention due to global environmental concerns and one of the main focuses is agricultural production. Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) is a crop of global significance and one of the important issues to be addressed towards its sustainable production is how soil quality has been considered in sugarcane cultivation. This bibliometric study aimed to investigate how soil quality has been addressed in sugarcane management research, as well as to identify possible knowledge gaps to be considered in future studies. The bibliographic search was performed by using a combination of terms considering all databases from the Web of Science ® (WOS). A total of 160 scientific publications were found and the following information was analyzed: i) publication years, ii) countries, iii) institutions, iv) authors, and v) research areas. Furthermore, to identify possible gaps in the literature, we classified soil-related papers in the following categories: soil physics, soil chemistry, soil use and management, soil conservation, soil survey and classification, soil micromorphology, soil biology, soil geochemistry, and soil fertility and plant nutrition. We also presented the most cited papers and contribution maps for countries considering a subset of 119 articles from the WOS Core Collection database. Concerns about soil quality in the cultivation of sugarcane have increased in recent years, especially in the last 9 years, when 74 % of the total papers were published. Brazil is the country responsible for 99 out of 160 publications with 12 institutions and 13 authors responsible for the largest number of publications. From a total of 160 published articles, 97 % were related to agriculture research and 71 % to soil science, whereas soil use and management was the most reported category. We found a lack of studies of no-tillage systems in sugarcane cultivation that assess soil quality, and that integrate physical, chemical and biological indicators, including hydrophysical, micromorphological and macrofauna analyses as indicators of soil quality. Brazil has a long history of sugarcane development and since the 2000s has undergone a significant increase in land cultivated with sugarcane. Policy-driven demand and a growing international market mean that sugarcane cultivation in Brazil is expected to increase in the coming years. Rising land prices and strengthened environmental legislation in São Paulo state – where the bulk of production occurs – have led farmers and investors to seek new land to cultivate. As a result, the Centre- West region, including the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, has become an epicentre for sugarcane expansion in Brazil. While the social, economic and environmental impacts of sugarcane have been well documented for the state of São Paulo, much less is known about these impacts in new sugarcane frontier regions. This paper addresses an important gap in the literature through an assessment of the relationship between human development and presence or absence of a sugar mill in municipalities in Mato Grosso do Sul. Drawing on the UN Human Development Index and the Social Responsibility Index of São Paulo, this paper develops a method to examine the relationship between the presence of sugarcane processing mills and human development at the municipal level in Mato Grosso do Sul. The paper finds evidence that municipalities with a mill perform relatively better in terms of human development than those without, but that municipalities with mills already performed relatively better than those without. In Brazil, sugarcane biomass is generated in large amounts. Sugarcane bagasse and straw are considered as an important feedstock for renewable energy and biorefinery. This paper aims to study the generation of monosaccharides (C5 and C6) from sugarcane biomass via processing bagasse or straw and mixtures of both materials (bagasse:straw 3:1, 1:1 and 1:3). Samples were pretreated with sulfuric acid which resulted in approximately 90% of hemicellulose solubilization, corresponding to around 58 g L− 1 of xylose. Pretreated straw showed greater susceptibility to enzymatic hydrolysis in comparison to bagasse, as shown by glucose yields of 76% and 65%, respectively, whereas the mixtures showed intermediate yields. Thus, one strategy to balance sugarcane biomass availability and possibly increasing 2G ethanol production would be to use bagasse-straw mixtures in appropriate ratios according to market fluctuations. Approximately 7% of Brazilian electricity is generated from sugarcane biomass. Although this scenario is relatively optimistic when compared to the fossil-based energy matrix of other nations, there is a clear opportunity of expanding bioelectricity production in the country even more. Recent changes in the environmental legislation are progressively prohibiting burning before sugarcane harvesting in Brazilian Center-South region. Consequently, straw (i.e., sugarcane tops, dry and green leaves) has become available in most of the sugarcane fields. When considering the low availability of capital to invest in large-scale greenfield projects currently in Brazil, this paper focuses on retrofit investments, i.e., those related to existing sugarcane mills aiming to increase electricity production with incremental investments. This study is based on the Virtual Sugarcane Biorefinery framework that is developed in the Brazilian Biorenewables National Laboratory (LNBR/CNPEM). This simulation framework integrates both agricultural and industrial models to anticipate the impacts of biorefineries on different sustainability aspects. In this paper, process-based models are used to represent incremental changes caused by sugarcane straw recovery adopting the integral harvesting system. The techno-economic analysis shows that the internal rates of return (IRRs) of different alternatives depend on the conditions assumed in the sensitivity analysis. The main parameters assessed in the sensitivity are related to industrial plant scale, straw transport distance, industrial operating period, dry-cleaning system (DCS) efficiency and electricity prices. In the best incremental scenarios (operation during the offseason), IRRs ranged from 35 to 69%, 44–83%, and 54–99% per year when recovering straw in mills with original crushing capacities of 2, 4 and 8 million tons of sugarcane per year, respectively. This analysis ratifies that the economic feasibility increases as much as industrial scale increases; also, the system benefits from shorter straw transport distances. In general, higher DCS efficiencies can improve the economic viability, although some non-linear effects can be observed under specific conditions of the industrial operation. Abstract: Bagasse from sugarcane is traditionally used in the Brazilian sugar and ethanol industry to meet the energy needs of its own production processes and, more recently, to generate surplus electricity for sale on the national grid. Currently, the industry faces a difficult choice between either enhancing electricity generation or increasing ethanol production through the biochemical processing of bagasse. The aim of this paper is to examine the most promising technical configurations for bioenergy production using sugarcane bagasse and to discuss which configuration would be the most attractive investment option for the industry. At present, electricity generation through Rankine cycle power plants is the only commercially available alternative. Nevertheless, the analysis cannot be restricted only to the short term. For this purpose, cost analysis for 2030 were developed, and even in scenarios where there is an effective cost reduction of untradeable routes, the alternative of burning bagasse to generate electricity provides the most benefits from an investor perspective. Ethyl carbamate is an impurity present in distilled beverages. Given the risk of it being a carcinogenic substance, Brazilian legislation has determined that its presence in distilled beverages, such as 'aguardente' and 'cachaça' (two types of sugarcane spirits), should be limited to a maximum of 150 µg/L. Ordinary spirits usually contain variable amounts of ethyl carbamate, although in lower concentrations than the maximum determined by law. The finding that commercial spirits had a much lower concentration of this impurity (around 50 µg/L) led the authors to research the reasons for the differences, and these are explored in this paper, with a focus on the speed of the distillation process and its influence on the spirit's composition. The team conducted research in a sugarcane distillery producing 'aguardente' using a simple pot still and measured the influence of fast and slow distillation on the presence of ethyl carbamate and non-alcohol components in the process. The results demonstrated that the speed of distillation was proportionally related to the concentration of ethyl carbamate and secondary components in the beverage's composition. Abstract: The Brazilian experience of more than three decades in the development and production of fuel ethanol from sugarcane has been an example of the technical and institutional requirements for the sustainable development of second generation ethanol (lignocellulosic ethanol) production. The main goal of this paper is to demonstrate the positive sugarcane conditions for the development of second generation ethanol. In order to do that, different industrial scenarios are considered to discuss technical and economic aspects of present and future sugarcane biorefineries. Furthermore, a carbon balance is performed to assess the added value to the carbon present in different sugarcane biorefinery products. The current Brazilian sugarcane production, which is processed in more than 400 mills, is around 600 Tg y−1, occupying an area of 78,000 km2. It can supply 84 Tg of bagasse at no cost and about 42 Tg of trash, which can be processed as a lignocellulosic material for ethanol production or other higher added value products in a biorefinery – as carbon balance results showed that a biorefinery is able to add value to the carbon presented in the sugarcane – using second generation technologies. In Brazil, the expansion of sugarcane for ethanol production has fundamentally altered the rural landscape and represents a significant change in the trajectory of the country's rural development and agrarian reform policies. Current policies are highly skewed in favour of agrofuel industries and are denying landless rural workers and peasant families, like those of Brazil's Landless Workers Movement (MST), access to land. In addition to the heavy social costs, the agrofuel industry threatens the environment by polluting the air, water and land. This paper elucidates the socio-environmental impacts of the burgeoning sugarcane-ethanol industry in the Pontal do Paranapanema, a region in the extreme west of the São Paulo state with a long history of land-related conflicts. While corporations reap astronomical profits from the agrofuel industry, the costs of agrofuel expansion in the Pontal do Paranapanema and in Brazil have been disproportionally borne by the environment and the most impoverished and marginalized members of society. There has been much discussion on the importance of Brazilian ethanol in promoting a more sustainable society. However, there is a lack of analysis of whether sugarcane plants/factories that produce this ethanol are environmentally suitable. Thus, the objective of this study was to analyse stages of environmental management at four Brazilian ethanol-producing plants, examining the management practices adopted and the factors behind this adoption. The results indicate that (1) only one of the four plants is in the environmentally proactive stage; (2) all plants are adopting operational and organisational environmental management practices; (3) all plants have problems in communicating environmental management practices; and (4) the plant with the most advanced environmental management makes intense use of communication practices and is strongly oriented towards a more environmentally aware international market. This paper is an attempt to explain the complex relationship between the evolution of environmental management, environmental practices and motivation using a framework. The expansion of sugarcane growing in Brazil, spurred particularly by increased demand for ethanol, has triggered the need to evaluate the economic, social, and environmental impacts of this process, both on the country as a whole and on the growing regions. Even though the balance of costs and benefits is positive from an overall standpoint, this may not be so in specific producing regions, due to negative externalities. The objective of this paper is to estimate the effect of growing sugarcane on the human development index (HDI) and its sub-indices in cane producing regions. In the literature on matching effects, this is interpreted as the effect of the treatment on the treated. Location effects are controlled by spatial econometric techniques, giving rise to the spatial propensity score matching model. The authors analyze 424 minimum comparable areas (MCAs) in the treatment group, compared with 907 MCAs in the control group. The results suggest that the presence of sugarcane growing in these areas is not relevant to determine their social conditions, whether for better or worse. It is thus likely that public policies, especially those focused directly on improving education, health, and income generation/distribution, have much more noticeable effects on the municipal HDI. Abstract: Sugar and ethanol production are key components of Brazil’s rural development and energy strategies, yet in recent years sugar production has been widely criticized for its environmental and labor practices. This study examines the relationship between rural development and sugarcane, ethanol, and cattle production in the state of São Paulo. Our results suggest that the value added components of sugarcane production, which include sugar refining and ethanol production, may have a strong positive affect on local human development in comparison to primary agricultural production activities and other land uses. These results imply that sugar production, when accompanied by a local processing industry can stimulate rural development. However, this paper also highlights the significant environmental and social harms generated by the sugar industry at large, which may undermine its development benefits if not addressed. Abstract: Equating eco-efficiency with the business link to sustainable development is clearly limited, especially with the new paradigms brought up by Corporate Social Responsibility, which has shown that the private sector’s contribution to sustainable development can go far beyond the sphere of pollution control. It is necessary to give eco-efficiency a broader meaning so that it can support the quest for sustainable development. The present paper illustrates this idea by comparing Brazilian production and use of ethanol from sugarcane, in the context of the National Alcohol Program (Proalcool), with biodiesel production and use, in the context of the Biodiesel National Program (PNPB). Despite the problems presented, PNPB was designed to encourage companies to align productivity concerns with social ones, what could be the beginning of the here called eco-social efficiency. Abstract: This paper presents results on the characterization of corn starch by X-ray powder diffraction and thermal analysis, as well as processing and characterization of starch–banana/sugarcane bagasse fiber composites. X-ray diffraction studies revealed that the starch sample belongs to the A-type, common in cereals. Thermal analysis showed good thermal stability for making composites, while fractographic studies of 70wt.% starch and 30% glycerol matrix revealed cracks between smooth and rough surface and dimples in rough regions, suggesting the sample was ductile. The composites of this matrix with banana and bagasse fibers prepared by compression molding showed more homogeneous composites with crude glycerin and structural changes in both the fiber composites, while their morphology was dictated by the properties of the fibers rather than by those of the matrix. Improvements in tensile properties were observed in these composites over those of the matrix, which are explained based on fractographic observations. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Leaching is disadvantageous, both for economical and environmental reasons since it may decrease the ecosystem productivity and may also contribute to the contamination of surface and ground water. The objective of this paper was to quantify the loss of nitrogen and sulfur by leaching, at the depth of 0.9m, in an Ultisol in São Paulo State (Brazil) with high permeability, cultivated with sugarcane during the agricultural cycle of crop plant. The following ions were evaluated: nitrite, nitrate, ammonium, and sulfate. Calcium, magnesium, potassium, and phosphate were also evaluated at the same depth. The sugarcane was planted and fertilized in the furrows with 120kgha−1 of N-urea. In order to find out the fate of N-fertilizer, four microplots with 15N-enriched fertilizer were installed. Input and output of the considered ions at the depth of 0.9m were quantified from the flux density of water and the concentration of the elements in the soil solution at this soil depth: tensiometers, soil water retention curve and soil solution extractors were used for this quantification. The internal drainage was 205mm of water, with a total loss of 18kgha−1 of N and 10kgha−1 of S. The percentage of N in the soil solution derived from the fertilizer (%NSSDF) was 1.34, resulting in only 25gha−1 of N fertilizer loss by leaching during all agricultural cycle. Under the experimental conditions of this crop plant, that is, high demand of nutrients and high incorporation of crop residues, the leached N represented 15% of applied N and S leaching were not considerable; the higher amount of leached N was native nitrogen and a minor quantity from N fertilizer; and the leached amount of Ca, Mg, K and P did not exceed the applications performed in the crop by lime and fertilization. Sugarcane is one of the most important industries of the Brazilian economy, and its main products are sugar and ethanol. Most of the industrial plants produce both products in an integrated process, in which the sugarcane bagasse is a by-product that can be used as a fuel in the cogeneration system. The bagasse is used as the only fuel of the plant, supplying all energy required for the process, and also producing electricity surplus that may be sold to the grid. In this paper, exergy analysis is used to assess an integrated sugar and ethanol plant with its cogeneration system. The plant was divided into eight sub-systems to evaluate the irreversibility generation in each separately. Data from typical sugarcane factories in Brazil, which produce sugar and ethanol, were used in the process simulation. The analysis has shown that the sub-systems with the highest contribution for the total irreversibility generation of the plant were co-generation, juice extraction and fermentation. Some improvements are proposed, including process thermal integration and the introduction of more efficient equipments for prime mover and steam and electricity generation. The analysis indicated that the total irreversibility could be reduced by 10% should those changes be implemented. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Bioethanol as fuel oxygenator is currently being introduced in Mexico with an estimated yearly demand of 3 billion liters expected to be produced mainly from sugarcane. This paper studies how to employ some of the expertise acquired by Brazil during its transition from typical mills into advanced biorefineries to retrofit the Mexican sucroalcohol industry. A typical Mexican sugarcane factory design is retrofitted to three biorefinery designs commonly found in Brazil, which are an autonomous distillery, a biorefinery with 50:50 feedstock ratio for ethanol and sugar production and a molasses distillery. The results of a techno-economic analysis considering these four designs under Mexican conditions are presented, followed by an economic comparison of the autonomous distillery design operating under Mexican and Brazilian conditions. Sustainability analysis is then carried out to identify the advantages and drawbacks of each design. The analysis compares an environment-driven scenario promoting bioethanol production and use for phasing out fossil fuels, against a commercially focused framework considering only environmental and economic issues affecting stakeholders' profit. For international civil aviation to be able to significantly reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) needs to be made feasible. This paper presents the results of an assessment of the feasibility of production of SAF in Brazil, considering three certified routes, based on the dedicated production of eucalyptus, soy, sugarcane and corn. The results presented here refer to the production of biomass in selected locations, aiming to reduce GHG emissions and minimise production costs. Considering that the opportunity costs of feedstocks were not observed, the minimum selling price (MSP) of SAF in the reference case was estimated at 13.4 EUR·GJ−1 for the production based on soybean oil (HEFA-SPK route), 21.0 EUR·GJ−1 for the production based on ethanol from sugarcane and corn (ATJ-SPK) and 32.0 EUR·GJ−1 from eucalyptus (FT-SPK). These values refer to SAF's nth industrial plant and biomass costs that are compatible with the current agricultural yields in Brazil but which are also the highest. The MSP results are relatively low compared to the estimates available in the literature, but they do not show the strict economic viability of SAFs in the short- to medium-term, mainly because of the low prices of fossil fuels. This paper proposes a method to support sugarcane yield forecast using vegetation spectral indices, principal component analysis and historic yield data. The study area is located in the State of São Paulo, Brazil, and is divided into 11 production plots (108.75 ha), where sugarcane of the RB85 5536 variety is cultivated on red latossol (oxissol‐type) soil and flat topography. The data employed in the study include radiometrically and geometrically corrected enhanced thermatic mapper Plus (ETM+)/Landsat‐7 and ASTER/Terra images, acquired in June and April 2001, respectively, and historic harvest data measured in 2000 and 2001. The method comprises several steps: (a) enhancement of specific spectral responses of vegetation constituents; (b) reduction of spectral dimensions with prioritization of information and weighing of parameters related to foliar area; the data processed through these steps are reduced to a single image (the synthesis image), from which the mean DN (digital number) per cultivated area is calculated; (c) the image DNs are subsequently transformed into ton of stalk per hectare (t ha-1) through normalization, which requires knowledge of the previous year's yield for the cultivated production plots under analysis. Yield estimates using the method showed greater precision in comparison to the ubiquitous visual methods employed by the sugarcane agro‐industry in Brazil. Using factual productivity data of the year 2000 harvest only, the method achieved estimate errors varying between 2.57% and 5.65%, compared with 9.06% expected by the sugar factory; whereas using data from the year 2001 harvest, error margins were remarkably lower, around 1%. This paper presents a feasibility study using multi-temporal Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) data to classify sugarcane crop. This study was carried out in São Paulo State which is the major sugarcane producer in Brazil, occupying more than 3.1 million hectares. Cloud-free MODIS images (16 days mosaics) were acquired over a period of almost 15 months. Samples of sugarcane and non-sugarcane were randomly selected and cluster analysis was performed to establish similar EVI temporal behaviour clusters. It was observed that EVI was sensitive to variations in land-use cover mainly du to phenology and land management practices. Therefore, selection of sugarcane samples with similar EVI temporal behaviour for supervised classification was difficult due to both large planting and large harvesting periods. Consequently, cluster analysis was chosen to carry out an unsupervised classification. The best results were obtained in regions occupied by: natural and planted forest, soybean, peanuts, water bodies and urban areas which contrasted with the temporal-spectral behaviour of sugarcane. The lowest performance was observed mainly in regions dominated by pasture, which has similar temporal-spectral behaviour to sugarcane. This study provided useful information to define a MODIS image classification procedure for sugarcane crop for the whole State area based on the large amount of cloud-free MODIS images when compared with other currently available optical sensors.
