Irrigation is an important factor affecting the change of terrestrial water storage (TWS), especially in grain-producing areas. The Northeast China Plain (NECP), the Huang-Huai-Hai Plain (HHH) and the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River Basin Plain (YRB) are major grain-producing regions of China, with particular climate conditions, crops and irrigation schemes. However, there are few papers focusing on the different variation pattern of water storage between NECP, HHH and YRB. In this paper, the characteristics of terrestrial water storage anomaly (TWSA) and groundwater storage in the three regions mentioned above from 2003 to 2014 were analyzed, and the main reasons for water storage variations in the three regions were also discussed. The result shows that although effective irrigated areas increased in all three regions, TWSA only decreased in HHH and TWSA in the other two regions have shown an increasing trend. Spatially, the water storage deficit was more serious in middle and south NECP and HHH. In the three regions, water storage variations were impacted by meteorological condition and anthropogenic stress (e.g., irrigation). However, irrigation water consumption has a greater impact on water storage deficit in HHH than the other two regions, and water storage variation in YRB was mainly impacted by meteorological conditions. In this case, we suggest that the structure of agricultural planting in HHH should be adjusted to reduce the water consumption for irrigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A distributed-framework basin modeling system (DFBMS) was developed to simulate the runoff generation and movement on a basin scale. This study is part of a series of papers on DFBMS that focuses on the hydraulic calculation methods in runoff concentration on underlying surfaces and flow movement in river networks and lakes. This paper introduces the distributed-framework river modeling system (DF-RMS) that is a professional modeling system for hydraulic modeling. The DF-RMS contains different hydrological feature units (HFUs) to simulate the runoff movement through a system of rivers, storage units, lakes, and hydraulic structures. The river network simulations were categorized into different types, including one-dimensional river branch, dendritic river network, loop river network, and intersecting river network. The DF-RMS was applied to the middle and downstream portions of the Huai River Plain in China using different HFUs for river networks and lakes. The simulation results showed great consistency with the observed data, which proves that DF-RMS is a reliable system to simulate the flow movement in river networks and lakes. • Chinese soil loss equation model was used to estimate long-term soil erosion. • Soil erosion rates increased in the basin from 2010 to 2017. • Interactions between main driving factors analyzed using boosted regression trees. • The B factor was the primary driver of soil erosion. Soil erosion reduces soil fertility and land productivity while enhancing desertification, which seriously threatens ecological security, carbon sequestration, and sustainable economic and social development. Therefore, it is fundamental to precisely assess the long-term dynamics of soil erosion and explore its drivers to control the risk of soil erosion. Currently, machine learning-based analyses of the factors driving soil erosion are lacking in the Beiluo River Basin (BRB), China. This paper aimed to investigate the spatiotemporal dynamics of soil erosion by the Chinese soil loss equation coupled with the gully erosion factor, and then reveal its driving factors using the Boosting Regression Tree method (BRT) and estimate the influence of drivers' interactions on soil erosion in the BRB between 1990 and 2017. The findings demonstrated that the expanded Chinese soil loss equation accurately explained the variations in soil erosion in the BRB. The range of average soil erosion rates was 2,852.83–800.35 t km−2 a−1. Steep gully farmland, particularly areas with relatively rough terrain, was more vulnerable to intense erosion. Soil erosion rates for different geomorphologies decreased as follows: hilly–gully areas > gully–plateau areas > alluvial river plains > Rocky Mountains. The major drivers affecting the soil erosion rate were the biomass control factor (B) and slope, followed by slope length (L) and slope steepness (S). B–soil erodibility (1990), B–LS (2000), LS–rainfall erosivity (2010), and slope–rainfall erosivity (2017) interactions had the greatest influence on soil erosion, with interaction intensities of 32.3%, 17.75%, 46.05%, and 35.69%, respectively. The average soil erosion rates according to land classification types decreased as follows: farmland > grassland > forest. The results indicate that water and soil conservation in the study area benefited greatly from implementation of the Grain for Green Program, with forests reducing erosion more effectively than grassland. Rapid urbanization in China has severely disturbed the underlying surface and river systems. The stream structure parameters of Suzhou City were analysed to study the evolution and spatial differentiation of a water system undergoing urbanization. The influencing pattern of different urbanization processes on river system structure and hydrological processes was detected by statistical methods and simulation analysis. The results show that urban sprawl is influenced by both the natural environment and the social economy. At different stages of urbanization, the spatial urban expansion and the natural river characteristics influence the evolution of the river network: during rapid urbanization, the decline in surface water ratio and river density is more intense. The decrease of surface water ratio and river density in rapidly urbanized areas was greatest, followed by that in area urbanized in the 1980s, with few changes in the old town. Under high urbanization, river system indicators tend to stabilize. The rivers' hydrological features were affected by urbanization, with water yield in the study area increasing from 0.81 to 0.95 m3/m2 (1991–2015). The same rainfall intensity results in higher flood levels and greater risk of flooding under rapid urbanization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the rapid economic development and urbanization in Taihu Basin (eastern China), the river system has decayed and the connectivity of rivers and lakes has weakened, resulting in frequent floods. The impact of changes in river system structure on hydrological processes in the plain river network area was analysed against a background of urbanization. An indicator system was built to describe the quantitative, morphological and spatial structure of the river system. Analysis of the change in annual average and extreme water levels revealed the influencing mechanism of the changes in river system structure on the hydrological processes. The results indicate a decreasing tendency in the density of the river system in the study area, with a reduction in water surface ratio by about 20% in the past 50 years. Since the 1960s, the maximum and annual average water levels have increased. The degree of change in the mean monthly, annual lowest and annual highest water levels was great, with that in the non-flood season being higher than in the flood season. The decrease in the number of rivers directly reduced the storage and adjustable capacity of the basin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
