Recently, South Korea has been transitioning into a super-aged society. The purpose of this paper is to identify the patterns and underlying causes of gerontophobia expressions in South Korea. This paper refines the patterns of gerontophobia expressions into five types: "Fear of Aging," "Resource Burden," "Social Isolation," "Criticism of Social Behavior," and "Stereotypes of Political Orientation." Based on these types, this study develops a deep learning algorithm to detect the type of gerontophobia expressions. To do this, kc-BERT was used and 760,140 news comments (for six years from May 1, 2017, to June 31, 2021) in Naver news was used. The result shows that "Fear of Aging" type exhibited a significant decreasing trend, while the other types showed no meaningful changes. The results of topic modeling on news articles indicated that various aspects of elderly life, unresolved historical events, COVID-19, digital and financial exclusion, economic and social welfare, and other critical societal issues co-occur and contribute to gerontophobia. This study provides a framework to understand the characteristics of online gerontophobia, offering insights into its underlying causes, and providing practical implications for policy makers. In determining wind loads when designing buildings—especially high-rise buildings—wind speed is a critical factor. With increased progression of city high-rise construction, accurate prediction has become ever more important. Many factors, such as local climates, roughness of surrounding conditions, and terrain, may affect wind speed. But among all factors considered, terrain has a very large influence. Difficulties in reflecting the influence of terrain on wind speed include (1) collecting topographic data information; (2) quantitatively evaluating terrain features; and (3) expressing specific area relationships with surrounding observation stations. This paper poses means to solve these limitations by (1) using satellite imagery to gather topographic information; (2) evaluating terrain quantitatively with convolutional neural network (CNN)–based encoders; and (3) employing a graph neural network (GNN) to estimate the wind speed relationship of an arbitrary place to that of observation stations. Herein, a machine learning model utilizing the aforementioned means was proposed. To support this model, an experiment was conducted using observed wind speed data in Korea. Throughout the experiment, previous studies were used to compare results with ratification of the posed model. In predicting energy consumption, classic econometric and statistical models are used to forecast energy consumption. These models may have limitations in an increasingly fast-changing energy market, which requires big data analysis of energy consumption patterns and relevant variables using complex mathematical tools. In current literature, there are minimal comparison studies reviewing machine learning algorithms to predict energy consumption in Korea. To bridge this gap, this paper compared three different machine learning algorithms, namely the Random Forest (RF) model, XGBoost (XGB) model, and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) model. These algorithms were applied in Period 1 (prior to the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic) and Period 2 (after the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic). Period 1 was characterized by an upward trend in energy consumption, while Period 2 showed a reduction in energy consumption. LSTM performed best in its prediction power specifically in Period 1, and RF outperformed the other models in Period 2. Findings, therefore, suggested the applicability of machine learning to forecast energy consumption and also demonstrated that traditional econometric approaches may outperform machine learning when there is less unknown irregularity in the time series, but machine learning can work better with unexpected irregular time series data. The most important thing to operate a power system is that the power supply should be close to the power demand. In order to predict the amount of electric power transaction (EPT), it is important to choose and decide the variable and its starting date. In this paper, variables that could be acquired one the starting day of prediction were chosen. This paper designated date, temperature and special day as variables to predict the amount of EPT of the Korea Electric Power company. This paper also used temperature data from a year ago to predict the next year. To do this, we proposed single deep learning algorithms and hybrid deep learning algorithms. The former included multi-layer perceptron (MLP), convolution neural network (CNN), long short-term memory (LSTM), gated recurrent unit (GRU), support vector machine regression (SVR), and adaptive network-based fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). The latter included LSTM + CNN and CNN + LSTM. We then confirmed the improvement of accuracy for prediction using pre-processed variables compared to original variables We also assigned two years of test data during 2017–2018 as variable data to measure high prediction accuracy. We then selected a high-accuracy algorithm after measuring root mean square error (RMSE) and mean absolute percent error (MAPE). Finally, we predicted the amount of EPT in 2018 and then measured the error for each proposed algorithm. In 2020 and 2021, humanity lived in fear due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, with the development of artificial intelligence technology, mankind is attempting to tackle many challenges from currently unpredictable epidemics. Korean society has been exposed to various infectious diseases since the Korean War in 1950, and to overcome them, the six most serious cases in National Notifiable Infectious Diseases (NNIDs) category I were defined. Although most infectious diseases have been overcome, viral hepatitis A has been on the rise in Korean society since 2010. Therefore, in this paper, the prediction of viral hepatitis A, which is rapidly spreading in Korean society, was predicted by region using the deep learning technique and a publicly available dataset. For this study, we gathered information from five organizations based on the open data policy: Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC), National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER), Korea Meteorological Agency (KMA), Public Open Data Portal, and Korea Environment Corporation (KECO). Patient information, water environment information, weather information, population information, and air pollution information were acquired and correlations were identified. Next, an epidemic outbreak prediction was performed using data preprocessing and 3D LSTM. The experimental results were compared with various machine learning methods through RMSE. In this paper, we attempted to predict regional epidemic outbreaks of hepatitis A by linking the open data environment with deep learning. Nasal endoscopy is routinely performed to distinguish the pathological types of masses. There is a lack of studies on deep learning algorithms for discriminating a wide range of endoscopic nasal cavity mass lesions. Therefore, we aimed to develop an endoscopic-examination-based deep learning model to detect and classify nasal cavity mass lesions, including nasal polyps (NPs), benign tumors, and malignant tumors. The clinical feasibility of the model was evaluated by comparing the results to those of manual assessment. Biopsy-confirmed nasal endoscopic images were obtained from 17 hospitals in South Korea. Here, 400 images were used for the test set. The training and validation datasets consisted of 149,043 normal nasal cavity, 311,043 NP, 9,271 benign tumor, and 5,323 malignant tumor lesion images. The proposed Xception architecture achieved an overall accuracy of 0.792 with the following class accuracies on the test set: normal = 0.978 ± 0.016, NP = 0.790 ± 0.016, benign = 0.708 ± 0.100, and malignant = 0.698 ± 0.116. With an average area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.947, the AUC values and F1 score were highest in the order of normal, NP, malignant tumor, and benign tumor classes. The classification performances of the proposed model were comparable with those of manual assessment in the normal and NP classes. The proposed model outperformed manual assessment in the benign and malignant tumor classes (sensitivities of 0.708 ± 0.100 vs. 0.549 ± 0.172, 0.698 ± 0.116 vs. 0.518 ± 0.153, respectively). In urgent (malignant) versus nonurgent binary predictions, the deep learning model achieved superior diagnostic accuracy. The developed model based on endoscopic images achieved satisfactory performance in classifying four classes of nasal cavity mass lesions, namely normal, NP, benign tumor, and malignant tumor. Die-casting is a popular manufacturing process that produces precise metal parts with excellent dimensional accuracy and smooth cast surfaces. Recently die-casting process condition data can be acquired to be used as input for machine learning techniques for fault detection. The rapid development of complex and accurate machine learning algorithms, such as tree ensembles and deep learning, allows the accurate detection of faulty products. However, interpreting and explaining black-box models is crucial in the die-casting industry because the predictions provided by the machine learning solution can be adopted in practice only after understanding the internal decision mechanism of the model. To solve this problem, rule extraction methods generate simple rule-based predictive models from complex tree ensembles. Nevertheless, rulesets may contain numerous complex rules with redundant conditions, and the standard structure of rulesets does not clearly show the hierarchical relationships and frequent interactions among their elements. For this reason, in this study, a visualization tool based on formal concept analysis, called RuleLat (Rule Lattice), is proposed, which generates simple visual representations of rule-based classifiers. The generated models depict the hierarchical relationships of interactions among conditions, rules, and predicted classes in a modified concept lattice that is easy to analyze and understand. To demonstrate the applicability of the proposed method, a case study using real-world manufacturing data collected from a die-casting company in Korea is presented. Outdoor stone cultural properties are continuously affected by the external environment such as wind, rain, and earthquakes. These cause damage to the cultural properties by not only threatening structural stability but also damaging the aesthetic value. Quick detection of these damages is important to enable appropriate preservation treatment in terms of cultural property conservation management. Even though conventional manual damage detection methods are widely used, they are limited by manpower, cost, and other external conditions. In this paper, we propose a system that automatically detects and classifies damage occurring in cultural properties using deep-learning technique to settle these drawbacks. In detail, the damages are classified into four types (i.e., crack, loss, detachment, biological colonization) based on Faster region-based convolutional neural network (R-CNN) algorithm. In addition, we construct an image dataset of stone damage, which is collected by the regular report of the National Designated Cultural Property in 2017 conducted by the Cultural Heritage Administration of S. Korea, and augment its dataset to enhance damage detection performance. From the experiment conducted, we achieved an average confidence score of 94.6 % or more on the 20 test images. Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) has posed a serious threat to the lives and health of the majority of people worldwide. Since the early days of the outbreak, South Korea's government and citizens have made persistent efforts to provide effective prevention against further spread of the disease. In particular, the participation of individual citizens in complying with the necessary code of conduct to prevent spread of the infection, through measures such as social distancing and mask wearing, is as instrumental as the geographical tracking of the trajectory of the infected. In this paper, we propose an activity recognition method based on a wristband equipped with an IR array and inertial measurement unit (IMU) to detect individual compliance with codes of personal hygiene management, such as mask wearing, which are recommended to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. The results of activity recognition were comparatively analyzed by applying conventional machine learning algorithms and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to the IMU time series and IR array thermal images collected from 25 subjects. When CNN and 24 × 32 thermal images were used, 97.8% accuracy was achieved (best performance), and when 6 × 8 low-resolution thermal images were used, similar performance with 97.1% accuracy was obtained. In the case of using IMU, the performance of activity recognition was lower than that obtained with the IR array, but an accuracy of 93% was achieved even in the case of applying machine learning algorithms, indicating that it is more suitable for wearable devices with low computational capability. Air pollution is a critical problem that is of major concern worldwide. South Korea is one of the countries most affected by air pollution. Rapid urbanization and industrialization in South Korea have induced air pollution in multiple forms, such as smoke from factories and exhaust from vehicles. In this paper, we perform a comparative analysis of predictive models for fine particulate matter in Daejeon, the fifth largest city in South Korea. This study is conducted for three purposes. The first purpose is to determine the factors that may cause air pollution. Two main factors are considered: meteorological and traffic. The second purpose is to find an optimal predictive model for air pollutant concentration. We apply machine learning and deep learning models to the collected dataset to predict hourly air pollutant concentrations. The accuracy of the deep learning models is better than that of the machine learning models. The third purpose is to analyze the influence of road conditions on predicting air pollutant concentration. The energy manufacturers are required to produce an accurate amount of energy by meeting the energy requirements at the end-user side. Consequently, energy prediction becomes an essential role in the electric industrial zone. In this paper, we propose the hybrid ensemble deep learning model, which combines multilayer perceptron (MLP), convolutional neural network (CNN), long short-term memory (LSTM), and hybrid CNN-LSTM to improve the forecasting performance. These DL architectures are more popular and better than other machine learning (ML) models for time series electrical load prediction. Therefore, hourly-based energy data are collected from Jeju Island, South Korea, and applied for forecasting. We considered external features associated with meteorological conditions affecting energy. Two-year training and one-year testing data are preprocessed and arranged to reform the times series, which are then trained in each DL model. The forecasting results of the proposed ensemble model are evaluated by using mean square error (MSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE). Error metrics are compared with DL stand-alone models such as MLP, CNN, LSTM, and CNN-LSTM. Our ensemble model provides better performance than other forecasting models, providing minimum MAPE at 0.75%, and was proven to be inherently symmetric for forecasting time-series energy and demand data, which is of utmost concern to the power system sector. COVID-19 has further aggravated problems by compelling people to stay indoors and limit social interactions, leading to a worsening of the depression situation. This study aimed to construct a TabNet model combined with SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) to predict depression in South Korean society during the COVID-19 pandemic. We used a tabular dataset extracted from the Seoul Welfare Survey with a total of 3027 samples. The TabNet model was trained on this dataset, and its performance was compared to that of several other machine learning models, including Random Forest, eXtreme Gradient Boosting, Light Gradient Boosting, and CatBoost. According to the results, the TabNet model achieved an Area under the receiver operating characteristic curve value (AUC) of 0.9957 on the training set and an AUC of 0.9937 on the test set. Additionally, the study investigated the TabNet model's local interpretability using SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) to provide post hoc global and local explanations for the proposed model. By combining the TabNet model with SHAP, our proposed model might offer a valuable tool for professionals in social fields, and psychologists without expert knowledge in the field of data analysis can easily comprehend the decision-making process of this AI model. Data is growing quickly due to a significant increase in social media applications. Today, billions of people use an enormous amount of data to access the Internet. The backbone network experiences a substantial load as a result of an increase in users. Users in the same region or company frequently ask for similar material, especially on social media platforms. The subsequent request for the same content can be satisfied from the edge if stored in proximity to the user. Applications that require relatively low latency can use Content Delivery Network (CDN) technology to meet their requirements. An edge and the data center constitute the CDN architecture. To fulfill requests from the edge and minimize the impact on the network, the requested content can be buffered closer to the user device. Which content should be kept on the edge is the primary concern. The cache policy has been optimized using various conventional and unconventional methods, but they have yet to include the timestamp beside a video request. The 24-h content request pattern was obtained from publicly available datasets. The popularity of a video is influenced by the time of day, as shown by a time-based video profile. We present a cache optimization method based on a time-based pattern of requests. The problem is described as a cache hit ratio maximization problem emphasizing a relevance score and machine learning model accuracy. A model predicts the video to be cached in the next time stamp, and the relevance score identifies the video to be removed from the cache. Afterwards, we gather the logs and generate the content requests using an extracted video request pattern. These logs are pre-processed to create a dataset divided into three-time slots per day. A Long short-term memory (LSTM) model is trained on this dataset to forecast the video at the next time interval. The proposed optimized caching policy is evaluated on our CDN architecture deployed on the Korean Advanced Research Network (KOREN) infrastructure. Our findings demonstrate how adding time-based request patterns impacts the system by increasing the cache hit rate. The strawberry market in South Korea is actually the largest market among horticultural crops. Strawberry cultivation in South Korea changed from field cultivation to facility cultivation in order to increase production. However, the decrease in production manpower due to aging is increasing the demand for the automation of strawberry cultivation. Predicting the harvest of strawberries is an important research topic, as strawberry production requires the most manpower for harvest. In addition, the growing environment has a great influence on strawberry production as hydroponic cultivation of strawberries is increasing. In this paper, we design and implement an integrated system that monitors strawberry hydroponic environmental data and determines when to harvest with the concept of IoT-Edge-AI-Cloud. The proposed monitoring system collects, stores and visualizes strawberry growing environment data. The proposed harvest decision system classifies the strawberry maturity level in images using a deep learning algorithm. The monitoring and analysis results are visualized in an integrated interface, which provides a variety of basic data for strawberry cultivation. Even if the strawberry cultivation area increases, the proposed system can be easily expanded and flexibly based on a virtualized container with the concept of IoT-Edge-AI-Cloud. The monitoring system was verified by monitoring a hydroponic strawberry environment for 4 months. Due to the availability of smart metering infrastructure, high-resolution electric consumption data is readily available to study the dynamics of residential electric consumption at finely resolved spatial and temporal scales. Analyzing the electric consumption data enables the policymakers and building owners to understand consumer's demand-consumption behaviors. Furthermore, analysis and accurate forecasting of electric consumption are substantial for consumer involvement in time-of-use tariffs, critical peak pricing, and consumer-specific demand response initiatives. Alongside its vast economic and sustainability implications, such as energy wastage and decarbonization of the energy sector, accurate consumption forecasting facilitates power system planning and stable grid operations. Energy consumption forecasting is an active research area; despite the abundance of devised models, electric consumption forecasting in residential buildings remains challenging due to high occupant energy use behavior variability. Hence the search for an appropriate model for accurate electric consumption forecasting is ever continuing. To this aim, this paper presents a spatial and temporal ensemble forecasting model for short-term electric consumption forecasting. The proposed work involves exploring electric consumption profiles at the apartment level through cluster analysis based on the k-means algorithm. The ensemble forecasting model consists of two deep learning models; Long Short-Term Memory Unit (LSTM) and Gated Recurrent Unit (GRU). First, the apartment-level historical electric consumption data is clustered. Later the clusters are aggregated based on consumption profiles of consumers. At the building and floor level, the ensemble models are trained using aggregated electric consumption data. The proposed ensemble model forecasts the electric consumption at three spatial scales apartment, building, and floor level for hourly, daily, and weekly forecasting horizon. Furthermore, the impact of spatial-temporal granularity and cluster analysis on the prediction accuracy is analyzed. The dataset used in this study comprises high-resolution electric consumption data acquired through smart meters recorded on an hourly basis over the period of one year. The consumption data belongs to four multifamily residential buildings situated in an urban area of South Korea. To prove the effectiveness of our proposed forecasting model, we compared our model with widely known machine learning models and deep learning variants. The results achieved by our proposed ensemble scheme verify that model has learned the sequential behavior of electric consumption by producing superior performance with the lowest MAPE of 4.182 and 4.54 at building and floor level prediction, respectively. The experimental findings suggest that the model has efficiently captured the dynamic electric consumption characteristics to exploit ensemble model diversities and achieved lower forecasting error. With the development of modern power systems (smart grid), energy consumption prediction becomes an essential aspect of resource planning and operations. In the last few decades, industrial and commercial buildings have thoroughly been investigated for consumption patterns. However, due to the unavailability of data, the residential buildings could not get much attention. During the last few years, many solutions have been devised for predicting electric consumption; however, it remains a challenging task due to the dynamic nature of residential consumption patterns. Therefore, a more robust solution is required to improve the model performance and achieve a better prediction accuracy. This paper presents an ensemble approach based on learning to a statistical model to predict the short-term energy consumption of a multifamily residential building. Our proposed approach utilizes Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) and Kalman Filter (KF) to build an ensemble prediction model to predict short term energy demands of multifamily residential buildings. The proposed approach uses real energy data acquired from the multifamily residential building, South Korea. Different statistical measures are used, such as mean absolute error (MAE), root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute percentage error (MAPE), and R 2 score, to evaluate the performance of the proposed approach and compare it with existing models. The experimental results reveal that the proposed approach predicts accurately and outperforms the existing models. Furthermore, a comparative analysis is performed to evaluate and compare the proposed model with conventional machine learning models. The experimental results show the effectiveness and significance of the proposed approach compared to existing energy prediction models. Purpose Assessing the metastasis status of the sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) for hematoxylin and eosin-stained frozen tissue sections by pathologists is an essential but tedious and time-consuming task that contributes to accurate breast cancer staging. This study aimed to review a challenge competition (HeLP 2019) for the development of automated solutions for classifying the metastasis status of breast cancer patients. Materials and Methods A total of 524 digital slides were obtained from frozen SLN sections: 297 (56.7%) from Asan Medical Center (AMC) and 227 (43.4%) from Seoul National University Bundang Hospital (SNUBH), South Korea. The slides were divided into training, development, and validation sets, where the development set comprised slides from both institutions and training and validation set included slides from only AMC and SNUBH, respectively. The algorithms were assessed for area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) and measurement of the longest metastatic tumor diameter. The final total scores were calculated as the mean of the two metrics, and the three teams with AUC values greater than 0.500 were selected for review and analysis in this study. Results The top three teams showed AUC values of 0.891, 0.809, and 0.736 and major axis prediction scores of 0.525, 0.459, and 0.387 for the validation set. The major factor that lowered the diagnostic accuracy was micro-metastasis. Conclusion In this challenge competition, accurate deep learning algorithms were developed that can be helpful for making a diagnosis on intraoperative SLN biopsy. The proportion of the inventory range associated with spare parts is often considered in the industrial context. Therefore, even minor improvements in forecasting the demand for spare parts can lead to substantial cost savings. Despite notable research efforts, demand forecasting remains challenging, especially in areas with irregular demand patterns, such as military logistics. Thus, an advanced model for accurately forecasting this demand was developed in this study. The K-X tank is one of the Republic of Korea Army's third generation main battle tanks. Data about the spare part consumption of 1,053,422 transactional data points stored in a military logistics management system were obtained. Demand forecasting classification models were developed to exploit machine learning, stacked generalization, and time series as baseline methods. Additionally, various stacked generalizations were established in spare part demand forecasting. In terms of electric vehicles (EVs), electric kickboards are crucial elements of smart transportation networks for short-distance travel that is risk-free, economical, and environmentally friendly. Forecasting the daily demand can improve the local service provider's access to information and help them manage their short-term supply more effectively. This study developed the forecasting model using real-time data and weather information from Jeju Island, South Korea. Cluster analysis under the rental pattern of the electric kickboard is a component of the forecasting processes. We cannot achieve noticeable results at first because of the low amount of training data. We require a lot of data to produce a solid prediction result. For the sake of the subsequent experimental procedure, we created synthetic time-series data using a generative adversarial networks (GAN) approach and combined the synthetic data with the original data. The outcomes have shown how the GAN-based synthetic data generation approach has the potential to enhance prediction accuracy. We employ an ensemble model to improve prediction results that cannot be achieved using a single regressor model. It is a weighted combination of several base regression models to one meta-regressor. To anticipate the daily demand in this study, we create an ensemble model by merging three separate base machine learning algorithms, namely CatBoost, Random Forest (RF), and Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost). The effectiveness of the suggested strategies was assessed using some evaluation indicators. The forecasting outcomes demonstrate that mixing synthetic data with original data improves the robustness of daily demand forecasting and outperforms other models by generating more agreeable values for suggested assessment measures. Although ultrasound plays an important role in the diagnosis of chronic kidney disease (CKD), image interpretation requires extensive training. High operator variability and limited image quality control of ultrasound images have made the application of computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) challenging. This study assessed the effect of integrating computer-extracted measurable features with the convolutional neural network (CNN) on the ultrasound image CAD accuracy of CKD. Ultrasound images from patients who visited Severance Hospital and Gangnam Severance Hospital in South Korea between 2011 and 2018 were used. A Mask regional CNN model was used for organ segmentation and measurable feature extraction. Data on kidney length and kidney-to-liver echogenicity ratio were extracted. The ResNet18 model classified kidney ultrasound images into CKD and non-CKD. Experiments were conducted with and without the input of the measurable feature data. The performance of each model was evaluated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC). A total of 909 patients (mean age, 51.4 ± 19.3 years; 414 [49.5%] men and 495 [54.5%] women) were included in the study. The average AUROC from the model trained using ultrasound images achieved a level of 0.81. Image training with the integration of automatically extracted kidney length and echogenicity features revealed an improved average AUROC of 0.88. This value further increased to 0.91 when the clinical information of underlying diabetes was also included in the model trained with CNN and measurable features. The automated step-wise machine learning–aided model segmented, measured, and classified the kidney ultrasound images with high performance. It is necessary to predict dam inflow in advance for flood prevention and stable dam operations. Although predictive models using deep learning are increasingly studied, these existing studies have merely applied the models or adapted the model structure. In this study, data preprocessing and machine learning algorithms were improved to increase the accuracy of the predictive model. Data preprocessing was divided into two types: The learning method, which distinguishes between peak and off seasons, and the data normalization method. To search for a global solution, the model algorithm was improved by adding a random search algorithm to the gradient descent of the Multi-Layer Perceptron (MLP) method. This revised model was applied to the Soyang Dam Basin in South Korea, and deep learning-based discharge prediction was performed using historical data from 2004 to 2021. Data preprocessing improved the accuracy by up to 61.5%, and the revised model improved the accuracy by up to 40.3%. With the improved algorithm, the accuracy of dam inflow predictions increased to 89.4%. Based on these results, stable dam operation is possible through more accurate inflow predictions. Machine learning (ML) and deep neural network (DNN) techniques are promising tools. These can advance mathematical crop modelling methodologies that can integrate these schemes into a process-based crop model capable of reproducing or simulating crop growth. In this study, an innovative hybrid approach for estimating the leaf area index (LAI) of paddy rice using climate data was developed using ML and DNN regression methodologies. First, we investigated suitable ML regressors to explore the LAI estimation of rice based on the relationship between the LAI and three climate factors in two administrative rice-growing regions of South Korea. We found that of the 10 ML regressors explored, the random forest regressor was the most effective LAI estimator, and it even outperformed the DNN regressor, with model efficiencies of 0.88 in Cheorwon and 0.82 in Paju. In addition, we demonstrated that it would be feasible to simulate the LAI using climate factors based on the integration of the ML and DNN regressors in a process-based crop model. Therefore, we assume that the advancements presented in this study can enhance crop growth and productivity monitoring practices by incorporating a crop model with ML and DNN plans. The accuracy of colposcopic diagnosis depends on the skill and proficiency of physicians. This study evaluated the feasibility of interpreting colposcopic images with the assistance of artificial intelligence (AI) for the diagnosis of high-grade cervical intraepithelial lesions. This study included female patients who underwent colposcopy-guided biopsy in 2020 at two institutions in the Republic of Korea. Two experienced colposcopists reviewed all images separately. The Cerviray AI® system (AIDOT, Seoul, Korea) was used to interpret the cervical images. AI demonstrated improved sensitivity with comparable specificity and positive predictive value when compared with the colposcopic impressions of each clinician. The areas under the curve were greater with combined impressions (both AI and that of the two colposcopists) of high-grade lesions, when compared with the individual impressions of each colposcopist. This study highlights the feasibility of the application of an AI system in cervical cancer screening. In the airline industry, customer satisfaction occurs when passengers' expectations are met through the airline experience. Considering that airline service quality is the main factor in obtaining new and retaining existing customers, airline companies are applying various approaches to improve the quality of the physical and social servicescapes. It is common to use data analysis techniques for analyzing customer propensity in marketing. However, their application to the airline industry has traditionally focused solely on surveys; hence, there is a lack of attention paid to deep learning techniques based on survey results. This study has two purposes. The first purpose is to find the relationship between various factors influencing customer churn risk and satisfaction by analyzing the airline customer data. For this, we applied deep learning techniques to the survey data collected from the users who have used mostly Korean airplanes. To the best of our knowledge, this is the one of the few attempts at applying deep learning to analyze airline customer propensities. The second purpose is to analyze the influence of the social servicescape, including the viewpoints of the cabin crew and passengers using aircraft, on airline customer propensities. The experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method of considering human services increased the accuracy of predictive models by up to 10% and 9% in predicting customer churn risk and satisfaction, respectively. The severe spread of the COVID-19 pandemic has created a situation of public health emergency and global awareness. In our research, we analyzed the demographical factors affecting the global pandemic spread along with the features that lead to death due to the infection. Modeling results stipulate that the mortality rate increase as the age increase and it is found that most of the death cases belong to the age group 60–80. Cluster-based analysis of age groups is also conducted to analyze the maximum targeted age-groups. An association between positive COVID-19 cases and deceased cases are also presented, with the impact on male and female death cases due to corona. Additionally, we have also presented an artificial intelligence-based statistical approach to predict the survival chances of corona infected people in South Korea with the analysis of the impact on the exploratory factors, including age-groups, gender, temporal evolution, etc. To analyze the coronavirus cases, we applied machine learning with hyperparameters tuning and deep learning models with an autoencoder-based approach for estimating the influence of the disparate features on the spread of the disease and predict the survival possibilities of the quarantined patients in isolation. The model calibrated in the study is based on positive corona infection cases and presents the analysis over different aspects that proven to be impactful to analyze the temporal trends in the current situation along with the exploration of deceased cases due to coronavirus. Analysis delineates key points in the outbreak spreading, indicating that the models driven by machine intelligence and deep learning can be effective in providing a quantitative view of the epidemical outbreak. The closed-circuit television (CCTV) systems have been used for various applications in oceanic research fields. CCTV is an effective installation method for offshore monitoring that can conveniently and continuously observe the coastal region using the visible or infrared light in the electromagnetic spectrum. However, in the case of wave-observing CCTV images, there is a problem: it is difficult to extract the corresponding feature points between the video frames, which causes of inaccurate measurement of wave parameters. Recently, in the field of machine learning technology, deep learning-based video analysis that does not require the detection of feature points has been proposed. In this paper, we analyze wave-observing CCTV images with deep learning method in particular convolution neural network, and find the optimal method of observing waves through CCTV by three different datasets. For training, the CCTV data from the Samcheok Beach in the Republic of Korea were used. Wave observation data, which were used as input for machine learning, were collected by an acoustic wave and current profiler (AWAC). Moreover, to make up for insufficient observation data, the data to enhance the prediction model through deep learning were augmented. The results of this study confirm that the deep learning algorithm can be utilized to detect wave period and wave height. Drought is among the most hazardous climatic disasters that significantly influence various aspects of the environment and human life. Qualitative and reliable drought forecasting is important worldwide for effective planning and decision-making in disaster-prone regions. Data-driven models have been extensively used for drought forecasting, but due to the inadequacy of information on model performance, the selection of an appropriate forecasting model remains a challenge. This study concerns a comparative analysis of six machine learning (ML) techniques widely used for hydrological drought forecasting. The standardized runoff index (SRI) was calculated at a seasonal (3-month) time scale for the period 1973 to 2016 in four selected watersheds of the Han River basin in South Korea. The ML models employed were built-ins, using precipitation, temperature, and humidity as input variables and the SRI as the target variable. The results indicated that all the ML models were able to map the relationship for seasonal SRI using the applied input vectors. The decision tree (DT) technique outperformed in all the watersheds with an average mean absolute error (MAE)=0.26 , root mean square error (RMSE)=0.34 , Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE)=0.87 , and coefficient of determination (R2)=0.89. The performances of the support vector machine (SVM) and deep learning neural network (DLNN) were similar, whereas the fuzzy rule-based system (FRBS) performed very well compared to the artificial neural network (ANN) and the adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS). The overall findings of this study indicate that, considering performance criteria and computation time, the DT was the most accurate ML technique for hydrological drought forecasting in the Han River basin. The aim of this study is to evaluate and compare the performances of 5 machine learning (ML) techniques for predicting the spatial probability of landslide at Atsuma, Japan, and Mt. Umyeon, Korea. 5 ML models used are Naïve Bayes (NB), ensemble learning (random forest (RF) and adaboost (AB)), and deep learning (multilayer perceptron (MLP) and convolutional neural network (CNN)) models. Real landslide events at the study areas are randomly separated to the training set for landslide mapping and the validation set for assessing performance. To assess the performance of the used models, the resulting models are validated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. The success rate curves show that the areas under the curve (AUC) for the NB, RF, AB, MLP, and CNN are 85.1, 88.8, 88.6, 87.5, and 95.0%, respectively, at Atsuma and 68.7, 85.6, 90.5, 81.6, and 92.0%, respectively, at Mt. Umyeon. Similarly, the validation results show that the areas under the curve for the NB, RF, AB, MLP, and CNN are 84.3, 87.1, 87.1, 86.7, and 89.7%, respectively, at Atsuma and 64.9, 85.5, 83.9, 84.7, and 90.5%, respectively, at Mt. Umyeon. In addition, statistical tests such as Chi-square test and difference of proportions test show that all classified landslide susceptibility maps have statistical significance and the significant difference in classified landslide susceptibility maps from different ML models. Recently, Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI), led by machine learning and deep learning, have emerged as key technologies of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). In particular, object recognition technology using deep learning is currently being used in various fields, and thanks to the strong performance and potential of deep learning, many research groups and Information Technology (IT) companies are currently investing heavily in deep learning. The textile industry involves a lot of human resources in all processes, such as raw material collection, dyeing, processing, and sewing, and the wastage of resources and energy and increase in environmental pollution are caused by the short-term waste of clothing produced during these processes. Environmental pollution can be reduced to a great extent through the use of recycled clothing. In Korea, the utilization rate of recycled clothing is increasing, the amount of used clothing is high with the annual consumption being at $56.2 billion, but it is not properly utilized because of the manual recycling clothing collection system. It has several problems such as a closed workplace environment, workers' health, rising labor costs, and low processing speed that make it difficult to apply the existing clothing recognition technology, classified by deformation and overlapping of clothing shapes, when transporting recycled clothing to the conveyor belt. In this study, I propose a recycled clothing classification system with IoT and AI using object recognition technology to the problems. The IoT device consists of Raspberry pi and a camera, and AI uses the transfer-learned AlexNet to classify different types of clothing. As a result of this study, it was confirmed that the types of recycled clothing using artificial intelligence could be predicted and accurate classification work could be performed instead of the experience and know-how of working workers in the clothing classification worksite, which is a closed space. This will lead to the innovative direction of the recycling clothing classification work that was performed by people in the existing working worker. In other words, it is expected that standardization of necessary processes, utilization of artificial intelligence, application of automation system, various cost reduction, and work efficiency improvement will be achieved. As the deep learning algorithm has become a popular data analysis technique, atmospheric scientists should have a balanced perception of its strengths and limitations so that they can provide a powerful analysis of complex data with well-established procedures. Despite the enormous success of the algorithm in numerous applications, certain issues related to its applications in air quality forecasting (AQF) require further analysis and discussion. This study addresses significant limitations of an advanced deep learning algorithm, the convolutional neural network (CNN), in two common applications: (i) a real-time AQF model and (ii) a post-processing tool in a dynamical AQF model, the Community Multi-scale Air Quality Model (CMAQ). In both cases, the CNN model shows promising accuracy for ozone prediction 24 h in advance in both the United States of America and South Korea (with an overall index of agreement exceeding 0.8). For the first case, we use the wavelet transform to determine the reasons behind the poor performance of CNN during the nighttime, cold months, and high-ozone episodes. We find that when fine wavelet modes (hourly and daily) are relatively weak or when coarse wavelet modes (weekly) are strong, the CNN model produces less accurate forecasts. For the second case, we use the dynamic time warping (DTW) distance analysis to compare post-processed results with their CMAQ counterparts (as a base model). For CMAQ results that show a consistent DTW distance from the observation, the post-processing approach properly addresses the modeling bias with predicted indexes of agreement exceeding 0.85. When the DTW distance of CMAQ versus observation is irregular, the post-processing approach is unlikely to perform satisfactorily. Awareness of the limitations in CNN models will enable scientists to develop more accurate regional or local air quality forecasting systems by identifying the affecting factors in high-concentration episodes. Purpose Assessing the status of metastasis in sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs) by pathologists is an essential task for the accurate staging of breast cancer. However, histopathological evaluation of SLNs by a pathologist is not easy and is a tedious and time-consuming task. The purpose of this study is to review a challenge competition (HeLP 2018) to develop automated solutions for the classification of metastases in hematoxylin and eosin--stained frozen tissue sections of SLNs in breast cancer patients. Materials and Methods A total of 297 digital slides were obtained from frozen SLN sections, which include post-- neoadjuvant cases (n=144, 48.5%) in Asan Medical Center, South Korea. The slides were divided into training, development, and validation sets. All of the imaging datasets have been manually segmented by expert pathologists. A total of 10 participants were allowed to use the Kakao challenge platform for 6 weeks with two P40 GPUs. The algorithms were assessed in terms of the area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Results The top three teams showed 0.986, 0.985, and 0.945 AUCs for the development set and 0.805, 0.776, and 0.765 AUCs for the validation set. Micrometastatic tumors, neoadjuvant systemic therapy, invasive lobular carcinoma, and histologic grade 3 were associated with lower diagnostic accuracy. Conclusion In a challenge competition, accurate deep learning algorithms have been developed, which can be helpful in making frozen diagnosis of intraoperative SLN biopsy. The Agrophotovoltaic (APV) system is a novel concept in the field of Renewable Energy Systems. This system enables the generation of solar energy via photo-voltaic (PV) modules above crops, to mitigate harmful impact on food production. This study aims to develop a performance evaluation model for an APV system in a temperate climate region, such as South Korea. To this end, both traditional electricity generation models (solar radiation-based model and climate-based model) of PV modules and two major machine learning (ML) techniques (i.e., polynomial regression and deep learning) have been considered. Electricity generation data was collected via remote sensors installed in the APV system at Jeollanam-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services in South Korea. Moreover, economic analysis in terms of cost and benefit of the subject APV system was conducted to provide information about the return on investment to farmers and government agencies. Automatic meter infrastructure (AMI) systems using remote metering are being widely used to utilize water resources efficiently and minimize non-revenue water. We propose a convolutional neural network-long short-term memory network (CNN-LSTM)-based solution that can predict faulty remote water meter reading (RWMR) devices by analyzing approximately 2,850,000 AMI data collected from 2762 customers over 360 days in a small-sized city in South Korea. The AMI data used in this study is a challenging, highly unbalanced real-world dataset with limited features. First, we perform extensive preprocessing steps and extract meaningful features for handling this challenging dataset with limited features. Next, we select important features that have a higher influence on the classifier using a recursive feature elimination method. Finally, we apply the CNN-LSTM model for predicting faulty RWMR devices. We also propose an efficient training method for ML models to learn the unbalanced real-world AMI dataset. A cost-effective threshold for evaluating the performance of ML models is proposed by considering the mispredictions of ML models as well as the cost. Estimating the damaged area after a forest fire is important for responding to this natural catastrophe. With the support of aerial remote sensing, typically with unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), the aerial imagery of forest-fire areas can be easily obtained; however, retrieving the burnt area from the image is still a challenge. We implemented a new approach for segmenting burnt areas from UAV images using deep learning algorithms. First, the data were collected from a forest fire in Andong, the Republic of Korea, in April 2020. Then, the proposed two-patch-level deep-learning models were implemented. A patch-level 1 network was trained using the UNet++ architecture. The output prediction of this network was used as a position input for the second network, which used UNet. It took the reference position from the first network as its input and refined the results. Finally, the final performance of our proposed method was compared with a state-of-the-art image-segmentation algorithm to prove its robustness. Comparative research on the loss functions was also performed. Our proposed approach demonstrated its effectiveness in extracting burnt areas from UAV images and can contribute to estimating maps showing the areas damaged by forest fires. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The ongoing upsurge of deep learning and artificial intelligence methodologies manifest incredible accomplishment in a broad scope of assessing issues in different industries, including the energy sector. In this article, we have presented a hybrid energy forecasting model based on machine learning techniques. It is based on the three machine learning algorithms: extreme gradient boosting, categorical boosting, and random forest method. Usually, machine learning algorithms focus on fine-tuning the hyperparameters, but our proposed hybrid algorithm focuses on the preprocessing using feature engineering to improve forecasting. We also focus on the way to impute a significant data gap and its effect on predicting. The forecasting exactness of the proposed model is evaluated using the regression score, and it depicts that the proposed model, with an R-squared of 0.9212, is more accurate than existing models. For the testing purpose of the proposed energy consumption forecasting model, we have used the actual dataset of South Korea's hourly energy consumption.
