The paper problematizes public housing privatization. It compares the trajectory of tenure change in two garden communities – Garbatella, Rome and Sunnyside Gardens, New York City – which privileged public and private ownership, respectively. The cases are currently dealing with tenure change. Sunnyside experienced the enclosure of gardens and citizens’ attempt to reclaim what was held in common in order to bring back the communal spaces. Garbatella is a place where growth over time of rights, powers, immunities, and privileges is manifested in long-lasting processes of appropriation of public housing goods. Despite their different stories, Sunnyside helps to problematize the process of public housing privatization in Garbatella which is further complicated by tenure complexity, State-induced rent gap and institutional displacement. The analysis of tenure change, done by using the ‘incidents of ownership’ notion developed by Marcuse, contributes to the understanding of what public housing privatization means in social and spatial terms. Housing privatization leads to an erosion of the in-between space where individual and collective aspiration meet as a precondition for the reproduction of what is held in common: spatial goods such as open spaces and housing – a fundamental aspect of our citizenship. This paper is the result of an invitation made to the author to assess his own contribution to the history of Roman slavery for presentation at a conference held at the University of Edinburgh in 2007. It describes the circumstances under which he began the study of Roman slavery (with special attention to the influence of contemporary studies of New World slavery), indicates the principal questions asked and answers proposed, and points to areas for further investigation. The article focuses on the objections of the U.S. Government (USG) to the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC) as expressed by its principal negotiator Ambassador David J. Scheffer. It discusses the validity of those objections and the national security interest issues that overrides the USG's fundamental concerns, the loss of sovereignty, and the abdication of constitutional rights. The article discusses the roles of the U.S. and Rome, Italy in the writings of Herman Melville. Particular focus is given to exceptionalist ideology pertaining to both places. According to the author, exceptionalism is not unique to the U.S. but instead rises from particular historical conditions and fulfills a social and political need for national identity. It is suggested that scholars should study the variations of exceptionalism across cultures in order to better understand this phenomenon.

It is a non-profit organization which was founded to promote studies of the most important problems in clinical and experimental dermatology within institutes, hospitals and research centers in Italy and abroad.

This article is a synthesis and interpretation of field work from a transcultural nursing immersion experience in Italy. The main focus of the field work was to understand the cultural influences on health systems with interpretations related to nursing education. The major recommendations of the paper include strategies for nurse educators to promote cultural competence throughout curricula by providing students with meaningful clinical experiences and addressing healthcare needs of diverse populations in the U.S. and abroad.

Blood letting and the therapeutic use of Hirudo medicinalis date back to ancient Egypt and the beginning of civilisation. Their popularity has varied over the years, reaching such a peak in Europe between 1825 and 1850 that supplies were exhausted. Towards the end of the century they fell out of favour and, during this period, the leech, once used by the physicians of emperors and influential academic surgeons, became associated with lay therapists and quackery. Leeches have enjoyed a renaissance in reconstructive microsurgery during the last 15 years, having been used by maxillofacial [Br. J. Oral Maxillofac. Surg 41 (2003) 44] and other reconstructive surgeons to aid salvage of compromised microvascular free tissue transfers [Laryngoscope 108 (1998) 1129; Br. J. Plast. Surg. 34 (1984) 358], replanted digits [Int. J. Microsurg. 3 (1981) 265], ears [Ann. Plast. Surg. 43 (1999) 427], lips [Plast. Reconstr. Surg. 102 (1998) 358; J. Reconstr. Microsurg. 9 (1993) 327] and nasal tips [Br. J. Oral Maxillofac. Surg. 36 (1998) 462]. Peer-reviewed evidence suggests that the survival of compromised, venous-congested tissues is improved by early application of a leech [J. Reconstr. Microsurg. 12 (1996) 165; Arch. Otolaryngol. Head Neck Surg. 114 (1988) 1395; Br. J. Plast. Surg. 45 (1992) 235]. Leeches have also recently been used to treat a wide range of conditions, including periorbital haematomas [Br. J. Ophthalmol. 75 (1991) 755], severe macroglossia [Otolaryngol. Head Neck Surg. 125 (2001) 649; J. Laryngol. Otol. 109 (1995) 442] and purpura fulminans [Ann. Plast. Surg. 35 (1995) 300]. The first medicinal leech farm, Biopharm, was set up in Swansea in 1981 by Dr Roy Sawyer, and now supplies leeches to hospitals all over the world. In this paper, we summarise the history of treatment with Hirudo medicinalis from its origin to the present day, and take a brief look at the possible future of the annelid.

The tradition fo Western medicine established during the period of classical antiquity and extending through the early modern period encouraged the physician to avoid or to refuse to treat the seriously and/or terminally ill patient. The cultural environment and general attitudes toward death and dying helped to maintain this practice. Since the nineteenth century, however, the physician has increasingly accepted more responsibility, until he has become the central figure in management of the terminally ill patient. This paper examines the evolution of the relationship between the physician and the dying patient with the intention of illuminating various factors which helped to determine that relationship.
