In the printing and packaging industry, sustainability is defined as manufacture and practices that reflect responsibility for the environment and resources to meet the needs and expectations of future generations. In this article, raw material management, cellulose resources, industrial forests, ecological and renewable alternative fiber resources were examined in the framework of the sustainability of the printing and packaging industry. The recycling of printed materials and packaging and the effects of paper-ink types and product design in this recycling have been discussed. The effect of separation and processing at the source on the efficiency of paper recycling, economy and ecology was emphasized. The greenhouse gas emissions of solvents used in inks and cleaners, the impact on climate change, water footprint and carbon footprint issues were examined. Suggestions have been made on environmental sustainability in the printing industry, what needs to be done for a competitive production, successful optimization, minimization of waste, use of existing possibilities, recycling and evaluation of alternatives and use of clean energy. Purpose The aim of this work is to quantify the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions savings potential in magazine paper production through the application of the innovative manufacturing strategies using advanced sheet structure design and fibre modifications. Methods The study applies Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology to two different magazine paper products: supercalendered (SC) paper and light-weight coated (LWC) paper. A cradle-to-gate approach is used aiming to assess the environmental benefits gained through the implementation of new manufacturing strategies in both products. The functional unit of the system was defined as the production of one square meter of finished paper for printing magazines. Conventional and new production processes have been compared. Results and discussion The strategies applied to SC paper resulted in reduction of GHG emissions by 22.9%, with a total of 10.7 gCO 2 eq emissions saved per square meter of SC paper. In the case of LWC paper, GHG emissions are reduced by 20.3%, which are equal to a total of 19.7 gCO 2 eq saved per square meter of LWC paper. The influence of certain methodological approaches -functional unit, electricity mix and avoided impacts- in the final results is also discussed in the paper. Conclusions The manufacturing strategies implemented show a remarkable potential for reducing GHG emissions. Taking into account that the pulp and paper industry is a very energy-intensive sector and one of the main GHG emitters, the potential of the strategies for the improvement of the environmental performance of the papermaking processes is significant. China is the largest paper producer and consumer in the world. However, China's paper industry is inefficient in its consumption of natural resources. Whereas the proportion of wood pulp used by the paper industry in developed countries is up to 63%, the corresponding figure for China is only 23%, leading to high energy and water consumption and severe environmental pollution. This article presents a systematic risk analysis using life cycle assessment and carbon footprint calculation associated with China's straw-pulp and wood-pulp paper industries. Risk prevention measures are proposed based on the results of this analysis. The study has important ramifications for the sustainable development of China's paper industry. Factors influencing the carbon footprint of anchoring systems using the example of a soil nailing system Sustainability is an increasingly important issue in the construction industry. The desire for greater sustainability is often pitted against the demand for high quality. After all, the quality of building products not only affects our daily well‐being, but quality in construction primarily stands for safety, load‐bearing capacity and serviceability of building components – as all involved in construction are inevitably taught during their training. There is often a preconception that sustainability and the demand for high quality are at odds with each other. The aim of this paper is to address the issue of sustainability in geotechnical anchoring systems and to identify and evaluate the factors influencing the carbon footprint. Using soil nailing as an example, it is shown that steel and its production, as well as cement, play a crucial role. By choosing the right soil nailing system, the user has a significant influence on the quality and sustainability of geotechnical anchoring systems. In addition, the paper will show how optimisation potential can be exploited in practice. Older buildings are often vilified for alleged poor energy performance. This discussion has, however, been limited to operational energy, rather than whole-life carbon. This paper compares both embodied and operational carbon emissions of building preservation to new construction. Methodologically, it relies on consequential replacement LCA. Using a representative 1950s school building as a case study, a locally heritage-listed example of Modernist architecture, four retention scenarios are devised. The scenarios represent different approaches towards repair needs, cost implications, time horizons of refurbishment, and conserving the building's architectural-historical value. For the contemporary new build, two scenarios are developed based on a case study school building completed in 2018. They differ by the material of the structural frame (concrete or cross-laminated timber). The concrete-framed alternative corresponds to the present business as usual, whereas the wooden alternative represents a competing lower-carbon technology. The study was conducted in Finland, i.e. a cold continental climate. In such conditions, operational energy consumption is significant for a building's carbon footprint. Nevertheless, the findings show that building preservation results in lower emissions than new construction in most of the scenarios. The research and management of Industry 4.0 increasingly relies on accurate real-time quality data to apply efficient algorithms for predictive maintenance. Currently, Low-Power Wide-Area Networks (LPWANs) offer potential advantages in monitoring tasks for predictive maintenance. However, their applicability requires improvements in aspects such as energy consumption, transmission range, data rate and constant quality of service. Commonly used battery-operated IIoT devices have several limitations in their adoption in large facilities or heat-intensive industries (iron and steel, cement, etc.). In these cases, the self-heating nodes together with the appropriate low-power processing platform and industrial sensors are aligned with the requirements and real-time criteria required for industrial monitoring. From an environmental point of view, the carbon footprint associated with human activity leads to a steady rise in global average temperature. Most of the gases emitted into the atmosphere are due to these heat-intensive industries. In fact, much of the energy consumed by industries is dissipated in the form of waste heat. With this scenario, it makes sense to build heat transformation collection systems as guarantors of battery-free self-powered IIoT devices. Thermal energy harvesters work on the physical basis of the Seebeck effect. In this way, this paper gathers the methodology that standardizes the modelling and simulation of waste heat recovery systems for IoT nodes, gathering energy from any hot surface, such as a pipe or chimney. The statistical analysis is carried out with the data obtained from two different IoT architectures showing a good correlation between model simulation and prototype behaviour. Additionally, the selected model will be coupled to a low-power processing platform with LoRaWAN connectivity to demonstrate its effectiveness and self-powering ability in a real industrial environment. Normally, the acidic impurities in hemihydrate phosphogypsum (HPG) must be neutralized when HPG is utilized, and a little amount of calcium hydroxide (CH) is the best choice. In this paper, the effects of excessive CH (5 wt.%, 10 wt.%, 15 wt.% and 20 wt.% of HPG) for carbonation curing on the performance of hardened HPG paste were studied. According to the results of macro tests and microanalyses of XRD, TG, SEM-EDS, MIP and N2 physisorption, it could be verified that CaF2, Ca3(PO4)2 and a large amount of nanoscale CaCO3 crystals were produced as a result of neutralization and carbonation, and the compressive strength and the water resistance of carbonated HPG + CH paste were significantly improved due to the effects of nanoscale CaCO3 crystals on pore refinement and the coverage on the surfaces of gypsum crystals of the hardened paste. Therefore, this study suggests a feasible and green method for recycling HPG/PG, with the collaborative effects of neutralization, performance enhancement and reductions in CO2 emissions. Purpose: Universities and their actions affect the environment directly and significantly. Therefore, the carbon footprint (CF) needs to be implemented in these institutions for mitigating climate change and its potential risks. Based on this understanding, the university consortium quality and environment (QualEnv) stands out by its main objective – to increase the university's contribution to sustainable development (SD) through the deployment of systematic environmental practices and quality processes. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to present the CF of the Latin American universities of the QualEnv consortium. Design/methodology/approach: The study was based on the actions for adopting CF and its implementation at the universities that take part in the QualEnv consortium. The measurement process and report presentation were done properly by the universities and published as institutional documents. Therefore, data were collected and analyzed through a document search, systematic literature review and participant observation. Findings: The results show knowledge deepening and systematization on CF in higher education. In addition, it presents the effort of a group of universities that, through a research network, seek to adopt practices towards a carbon-neutral university, which requires an incremental and systematic change to break out of the traditional system. Originality/value: This paper discusses the practical implications for universities and the need to implement initiatives for measuring and reducing their CF since it shows how the institutions belonging to QualEnv consortium have created their own strategies to mitigate climate change and contribute to SD. While there has been an international call for action from the United Nations secretary general, individuals' abilities to engage with climate change and actions to mitigate it can vary. In 2020 and 2021, COVID-19 and related school closures caused significant upheaval across the world; schools made immediate shifts to remote delivery, increasing workloads and decreasing access to outdoor spaces and opportunities to connect with nature. In this paper we will explore a rural, mid-Wales school's approach to climate change education (CCE), and their experiences running the CCE programme 'You and CO2' through interviews with teachers and analyses of creative interactive digital narratives (IDNs) the students created on the programme. The paper will discuss what the school was doing before the COVID-19 pandemic, the effect of the pandemic on CCE in the school, and how the You and CO2 programme raised the aspirations and confidence levels of the school's humanities department for teaching CCE. The findings in this study highlight the importance of localised knowledge, and engagement with local groups in successful delivery of CCE programmes, which was reflected in students' IDNs. The pulp and paper industry, which is closely related to national economic and social development, is an important industry but also contributes high carbon emissions. Therefore, with the advent of the low-carbon economic era, ways to reduce the carbon emissions and to bring about a low-carbon industrial transition of the pulp and paper industry is becoming one of the important academic projects. A system for carbon footprint assessment, namely the Publicly Available Specification (PAS) 2050 methodology, is introduced in this paper. Based on the analysis and assessment of the carbon footprint (CO2 equivalent emissions) for the Coated Ivory Board production lines, it was used to provide a scientific basis and approach for reduction of carbon emissions and formulate the corresponding measures for carbon emissions reduction of China's pulp and paper industry. The business to business carbon footprint, for which steps of the life cycle are included in Coated Ivory Board production, was analyzed and calculated. The results showed that there were 888 kg of CO2 equivalent emissions per metric ton of Coated Ivory Board, in which the largest part, accounting for 57.5%, was associated with purchased electricity, followed by fuel oil at 40.2%, and others accounted for 2.3% of the CO2 equivalent emissions. • A life cycle assessment (LCA) of solid recovered fuel (SRF) was conducted. • SRF production process contributes to about 35.6 kg CO 2 -eq per ton. • A maximum of −1752.03 kg CO 2 -eq was obtained with about 80 % of SRF biogenic carbon. • A footprint of −542.09 to −1729.05 kg CO 2 -eq can be found due to coke substitution. • The study recommended SRF production to mitigate the global carbon footprint. Solid recovered fuel (SRF) from non-recyclable waste obtained from source separation and mechanical treatments can replace carbon coke in cement plants, contributing to the carbon neutrality. A life cycle assessment (LCA) of the SRF production from non-recyclable and selected waste was conducted in an Italian mechanical treatment plant to estimate the potential environmental impacts per ton of SRF produced. The analysis would contribute to evaluate the benefits that can be obtained due to coke substitution in best- and worst-case scenarios. The avoided impacts achieved were assessed, together with an evaluation of the variables that can affect the environmental benefits: SRF biogenic carbon content (in percentage of paper and cardboard); transportation distances travelled from the treatment plant to the cement kiln; the renewable energy used in the mechanical facility. On average, about 35.6 kgCO 2 -eq are generated by the SRF transportation and production phase. These impacts are greatly compensated by coke substitution, obtaining a net value of about −1.1 tCO 2 -eq avoided per ton of SRF. On balance, the global warming potential due to SRF production and consumption ranges from about −542 kgCO 2 -eq to about −1729 kgCO 2 -eq. The research recommended the use of SRF to substitute coke in cement kilns also in low densely-populated areas to mitigate environmental impacts and achieve carbon neutrality at a global level. This paper studies the chemo-mechanics of cement beams containing polypropylene (PP) functionalized using ultraviolet (UV) irradiation. It is hypothesized that UV irradiation enhances the load transfer at the interface of cement and PP while facilitating the valorization of waste PP. In this study, we use UV-irradiated polypropylene (UVPP) plastic particles as an ingredient in cement paste, using the enhanced cement-UVPP interaction to improve the capacity for load transfer. Using atomic force microscopy based infrared spectroscopy (AFM-IR) on a UVPP-cement composite, we first show that the UV bombardment of PP promoted the formation of oxygen functional groups at the interface between UVPP and cement, indicating a possible increase in the affinity of the UVPP particles toward water and thus their hydrophilicity. This in turn is expected to enable the formation of bonds between the UVPP and cement, enabling stress transfer at the interface. We further show that this stress transfer increases the work-of-fracture, ductility, and mechanical energy absorption of the notched three-point bending cement-UVPP composite beam. This is accomplished when the two fracture surfaces that form during crack propagation are bridged by the UVPP-cement interaction. Since the ductility of these beams is size dependent, we performed fracture tests on two-dimensional (2D) geometrically scaled beams of four sizes. In addition to the mechanical improvements, this work forms the foundation for future work focused on reducing the carbon footprint of structures, since the UVPP replaces some of the cement and eliminates some of the plastic waste from landfills. This paper clarifies the farm applicability and feasibility of spreading biodegradable plastic film mulching for garlic production to ensure the green and sustainable development of the garlic industry. We set up a field trial of garlic planting with biodegradable plastic film mulching (BM) and plastic film mulching (PM), using no film mulching (CK) as the control, and measured CH4 and N2O emissions in the garlic fields. The yield-scaled global warming potential, carbon footprint, and net ecosystem economic benefit (NEEB) were used to assess the comprehensive impact of the different treatments. Compared to the CK, film mulching significantly increased CH4 absorption, with significantly higher seasonal cumulative CH4 emissions (20.5%) in BM than PM, but significantly increased N2O emissions, with significantly lower seasonal cumulative N2O emissions (23.53%) in BM than PM. Both BM and PM improved garlic yield, with PM significantly increasing garlic yield by 18.86% compared to the CK. Moreover, film mulching significantly decreased the yield-scaled global warming potential (by 52.06% and 40.82% in PM and BM, respectively). PM had a significantly higher carbon footprint than BM. Film mulching improved NEEB by 9.29–11.78%. Considering crop yields and environmental benefits, we propose BM as an effective method for a green and efficient garlic production. As the world moves away from fossil fuels, there is growing recognition of the need for a just transition of those working in carbon-intensive industries and for policy to support this transition. While recent policies such as the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) have begun to incorporate support for energy-intensive regions, little work has thoroughly investigated which communities are most vulnerable to economic disruption in the energy transition and therefore require policy support. This paper analyzes the distribution of employment vulnerability in the U.S. by calculating the average "employment carbon footprint" of close-to every job in the U.S. economy at high geographic and sectoral granularity. The measure considers employment vulnerability across the entire economy and captures both fossil fuel consumption and production effects, with the sectors covered in our analysis accounting for 86% of total U.S. employment and 94% of U.S. carbon emissions outside of the transportation sector. We find that existing efforts to identify at-risk communities both in the literature and the IRA exclude regions of high employment vulnerability, and thereby risk leaving these communities behind in the energy transition. This work underscores the importance of proactive and continuous measures of employment vulnerability, presents policymakers with much-needed data to incorporate such measures into just transition policy and makes the case for place-based policy approaches when considering how best to support communities through the energy transition. The construction industry has become one of the main drivers of the increase in carbon emissions and subsequent climate change. In this study, we focused on building carbon neutrality design and used CiteSpace V.6.2.R2 to conduct bibliometric analysis of published papers (2008–2023). After the initial screening, 280 pieces of relevant literature were obtained, including reviews, research papers, and case studies. Following further screening and excluding duplicate literature articles, 50 pieces of literature were ultimately selected as references for this paper, covering various aspects of key scientific issues, implementation approaches, and emerging research frontiers in carbon-neutral design for buildings. The research results show that significant progress has been made in energy conservation, materials, structures, systems, and operations in the research on carbon-neutral design for buildings. However, there are still issues, such as unclear implementation paths for carbon-neutral design, incomplete lifecycle assessment of carbon-neutral design, and high cost of carbon neutrality technologies in current research. Therefore, further research on the overall concept of carbon-neutral design, the progress and implementation of carbon neutrality technologies, and the integration of carbon-neutral design with sustainable development concepts are necessary. To sum up, this paper presents a thorough overview of the advancements in carbon-neutral design for buildings, examines the existing research challenges, and suggests potential avenues for future research. This paper's findings can provide guidance for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to promote the development and application of carbon-neutral design for buildings and to achieve sustainable development goals. The production of high-yield pulp in China has increased significantly in recent years. The well-known advantages of this type of pulp include low production cost, high opacity, and good paper formation. In the context of state-of-the-art technologies, China's high-yield pulping, which is dominated by the PRC-APMP (preconditioning refiner chemical treatment-alkaline peroxide mechanical pulping) process, has a much higher energy input but a significantly lower wood consumption in comparison with the kraft pulping process. If the saved wood in the forest or plantation is considered as an increment of carbon storage, then the carbon dioxide emission from the production of high-yield pulp can be regarded as much lower than that of kraft pulp. In a society dominated by an ever-evolving transport sector and experiencing profound technological change in all areas, we cannot deny the impact of transport on the environment. This paper has examined the main environmental impacts of transport activities associated with the food sector in order to undertake a critical review of the challenges we may face in developing this sector. The main objective was to show the links between transport activities throughout the food life cycle and the environment. The paper reviewed the main studies in the field and the results identified the main ways in which transport affects the environment and identified some solutions to reduce its impact. The materials used in the research cover a wide range of information on the environmental impacts of transportation activities. Available scientific literature containing information on transportation was used, and the scientific material was analyzed theoretically. Our brief review of the environmental impacts of transportation activities related to agriculture showed that greenhouse gas emissions in this sector are increasing. Our research has shown that it is necessary to use efficient vehicles, reduce transport distances, develop cooperation in transport networks, use new types of packaging, etc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Carbon–carbon backbone polymers are non-biodegradable, persistent plastics that have accumulated on land and oceans due to human activities. They degrade and fragment into microplastics and smaller particle sizes but do not biodegrade at an acceptable and practical rate. Their continual buildup in the natural environment precipitates serious detrimental impacts on human health and the environment, as extensively documented in the literature and media. Nearly 77% of global plastics produced are carbon–carbon backbone polymers. More importantly, 90% of packaging plastics (153.8 million metric tons) are non-biodegradable, persistent carbon–carbon backbone polymers. The recycling rate of these non-durable packaging plastics ranges from 0 to 4%. Re-designing carbon–carbon backbone polymers to labile ester backbone biodegradable–compostable polymers and treating them along with biodegradable organic waste (such as food, paper, and organic wastes) in managed industrial composting is environmentally responsible. Diverting 1 million metric tons of biodegradable organic wastes in MSW bound for landfills and open dumps to industrial composting results in 0.95 million metric tons CO2 equivalents of GHG emissions reduction. This perspective paper discusses strategies and rationales regarding the redesign of carbon–carbon backbone polymer molecules. It describes the carbon footprint reductions achievable by replacing petro-fossil carbon with plant biomass carbon. Biodegradability and compostability are frequently used but misunderstood and misused terms, leading to misleading claims in the marketplace. In connection with renewable energy sources, the courtyards of the buildings provide space for the installation of agrivoltaics for sustainable development. This paper proposes the use of courtyards of low-rise buildings for agrivoltaics. This will increase the area for installing photovoltaic systems, which have so far only been installed on roofs or facades or on open fields. The advanced design of the photovoltaic systems will enable the dual use of the area both for the cultivation of crops and for the production of electricity at the same time. The increased amount of electricity produced in photovoltaic systems also contributes to reducing the carbon footprint. On the courtyard as well as on the open fields, it is possible to grow agricultural crops between rows of photovoltaic panels. The partial shading of seedlings during summer sunny days reduces their heat stress and slows down soil drying. Solar eclipses are rare, but their impact on electricity generation is significant. We evaluated the measured data and we assessed the electricity production and the influence of a solar eclipse on the electricity production in photovoltaic power plants in the Czech Republic. The daily loss in production depends on the size of the eclipse. A comparison of the annual electricity production in two selected PV power plants with the expected values according to PVGIS testifies to the quality of the construction and the PV panels used in both power plants. One of the most pressing questions today is how to prevent or slow down climate change. As a service sector, transport significantly contributes to this and increases greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, creating long-term sustainable social, economic and environmental processes by eliminating current systemic failures can also be a significant challenge for individual nations. One thing is sure: the status quo is not sustainable. Taking all these aspects into account, this paper seeks to answer the question of the extent to which the performance of freight transport in each EU Member State contributes to the change in the ecological footprint and how national characteristics influence this. The research introduces a newly established indicator, the freight transport footprint, which is based on a family of footprint formulas and specifically seeks to answer the extent to which freight transport burdens our environment. This paper discusses the application of a new honeycomb FCH HVAC (Free Cooling and Heating System, Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) ring network technology that reduces the primary energy consumption in existing infrastructure. The aim of the research is to evaluate the cost-environmental viability of upgrading the technical infrastructure and moving from traditional to newly designed green systems built on renewable energy sources. The results show that the energy capacity stored in groundwater is equivalent to 65% of building demand, resulting in a 60% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to a traditional HVAC system. The present work is a critical review on the carbon footprint and energy recovery potential of septic and Imhoff tanks for primary wastewater treatment. From an online search of research papers, a lack of up-to-date research about gas emissions from Imhoff tanks emerged. Additionally, available literature data should be extended to incorporate the effect of seasonal variations, which may be relevant due to the fact that both systems work under environmental conditions. The literature generally agrees on the positive effect of temperature increase on biogas and methane production from both septic and Imhoff tanks. Additionally, sludge withdrawal is an important operational feature for gas production in these reactors. More recently, the application of electrochemical technologies and the installation of photovoltaic modules have been studied to enhance the sustainability of these decentralized solutions; in addition, sludge pretreatment has been investigated to raise the obtainable methane yields due to limited sludge biodegradability. Further research is needed to assess the effective sustainability of biogas collection and valorization from existing septic and Imhoff tanks, considering the limited biogas generation and the implementation of these systems in decentralized wastewater treatment scenarios (rural or mountain areas). Contrary to the intensive research on greenhouse gas mitigation strategies applied to centralized systems, solutions specifically designed for gas emission mitigations from septic and Imhoff tanks have not attracted the same scientific interest up to now. More generally, given the widespread application of these two options and their potential significant contribution to the overall carbon footprint of wastewater treatment technologies, much more research must be performed in the future both on the quantification of gas production and on the applicable strategies to reduce their carbon footprint. Alternate wetting and drying irrigation (AWD) has been shown to decrease water use and trace gas emissions from paddy fields. Whereas genotypic water use shows little variation, it has been shown that rice varieties differ in the magnitude of their methane emissions. Management and variety‐related emission factors have been proposed for modelling the impact of paddy production on climate change; however, the magnitude of a potential reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by changing varieties has not yet been fully assessed. AWD has been shown to affect genotypic yields and high‐yielding varieties suffer the greatest loss when grown under AWD. The highest yielding varieties may not have the highest methane emissions; thus, a potential yield loss could be compensated by a larger reduction in methane emissions. However, AWD can only be implemented under full control of irrigation water, leaving the rainy seasons with little scope to reduce methane emissions from paddy fields. Employing low‐emitting varieties during the rainy season may be an option to reduce methane emissions but may compromise farmers' income if such varieties perform less well than the current standard. Methane emissions and rice yields were determined in field trials over two consecutive winter/spring seasons with continuously flooded and AWD irrigation treatments for 20 lowland rice varieties in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam. The remanufacturing industry is experiencing significant growth, resulting in a substantial increase in its carbon footprint. Unfortunately, this issue is not receiving adequate attention at present. Moreover, existing methods for analyzing carbon footprints in remanufacturing systems are inefficient and inaccurate due to the complex relationship between carbon emissions and the dynamic nature of the systems. In this paper, we propose a multisource data‐driven approach for carbon footprint analysis of remanufacturing systems. First, we examine the relationship between carbon emissions and the uncertainty surrounding end‐of‐life (EOL) product components, as well as the corresponding resource recovery strategies, such as reuse, recycle, and remanufacture. This analysis allows us to define the carbon footprint boundary of remanufacturing systems. Next, we establish a carbon footprint model for recycling strategies using recycling data. Additionally, we propose a carbon footprint model for remanufacture strategies by utilizing the back propagation neural network based on particle swarm optimization algorithm and data from the materials flow, energy flow, and waste flow of these strategies. By combining these models, we can accurately calculate the carbon footprint of remanufacturing systems. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach, we present a case study on the remanufacturing of an EOL automobile engine. This case study showcases how our methodology can be utilized as a valuable tool for analyzing carbon footprints and identifying strategies to reduce carbon emissions in remanufacturing systems. The carbon footprint is one of the main factors for measuring CO emissions2, this atmospheric gas represents a worldwide environmental problem. Currently, universities are making inroads into the solution through the quantification and mitigation of CO2. Academic activities and the delivery of physical documents generate high amounts of paper consumption and consequently levels of CO2, which establishes a problem. The objective is to estimate the carbon footprint of the Universidad Técnica Estatal de Quevedo (UTEQ) located in Ecuador. The methodology employed consisted of a quantification of the number of files registered in the academic system per year. The files were multiplied by an average number of sheets obtained through a survey applied to teachers. The carbon footprint was determined by multiplying the CO emission factor2 by annual paper consumption. The emissions obtained are 3.21 ton CO2 eq to 3.00 ton CO2 eq for the year 2020-2021 and 2021-2022, respectively. The virtual education implemented at UTEQ contributed to the fulfillment of climate change objectives, due to the non-emitted CO2 emissions determined in this study, an issue that is related to the achievement of a green university. Purpose: Reducing our carbon footprint (CF) or decarbonizing is a sustainable development goal. Although there has been an increase in research on this topic, little is known about the status of CF research within universities. The purpose of this paper is to identify the initiatives implemented in universities aimed at reducing CF in their efforts toward creating a Green Campus. Design/methodology/approach: Using a bibliometric method, the status of this field of research was examined for the purpose of identifying the main publications and the most central researchers in terms of productivity and citations. Also, by using an exploratory factor analysis (EFA), the regions of the world with the most active research, as well as the direction of research, were identified. Findings: The survey identified the region that published the most on the subject in the past 10 years, as well as the most relevant authors in the publications. Through this factor analysis, it was possible to identify, among the 105 publications analyzed, four distinct factors (clusters) with different thematic strands that appear to define a difference between the related studies on this topic. These factors were identified as campus management: supply and consumption operations; greenhouse gases emissions assessment: CF calculation; university air travel; sustainable food systems. The changes in people's attitudes and in the use of university spaces during the COVID-19 pandemic in relation to the CF was also noted as a point that can be investigated in future research. As well as the reflection of the reduction in academic air travel and the "forced" occurrence of online events during the same period. Originality/value: The paper aims to innovate by applying the multidimensional scaling method and EFA to scientific articles on the topic of decarbonizing campuses and identifying the clusters that constitute this field of study. The rapid growth of the livestock and poultry production in China has led to a rise in manure generation, which contributes to the emissions of GHGs (greenhouse gases including CH4, N2O and CO2) and other harmful gases (NH3, H2S). Reducing and managing carbon emissions has become a critical global environmental imperative due to the adverse impacts of GHGs. Unlike previous reviews that focused on resource recovery, this work provides an unique insight of transformation from resource-oriented manure treatment to integration of resource recovery with pollution reduction, carbon accounting and trading, focusing on the sustainable development of manure management system. Considering the importance of accounting methodologies for carbon emission and trading system toward carbon neutrality society, suggestions and strategies including attaching high importance to the development of more accuracy accounting methodologies and more practical GHG emission reduction methodologies are given in this paper. To investigate the impact of solar energy on the carbon footprint, to find effective measures to reduce the carbon footprint and slow global warming as soon as possible, this paper takes 30 provinces in China as an example. First, the inter‐regional input–output model is used to calculate the carbon footprint of each province. Then, the panel quantile regression model is used to investigate the impact of solar energy generation on different quantiles of carbon footprint. The results show that from 2012 to 2020, China's carbon footprint is at a high level, which is not conducive to the achievement of the goal of peaking carbon dioxide emissions. The eastern region has the highest carbon footprint, followed by the western region, the central region has the lowest carbon footprint, and its carbon footprint proportion continues to decline. The increase of solar energy generation can significantly reduce the carbon footprint of high quantile location, but has no significant impact on the carbon footprint of the middle and low quantile locations. Except for the negative impact of afforestation area on carbon footprint, the others control variables are all positive. Therefore, to reduce the carbon footprint of China, it is necessary to upgrade solar technology, increase solar energy generation, reduce energy consumption per unit of GDP (Gross Domestic Product) and the share of coal consumption, strengthen forestry management and reduce reliance on private vehicles. The citizen's carbon footprint is affected by various factors, but mostly by electricity consumption, daily transportation, travelling habits, as well as municipal solid waste management, a critical factor that is not frequently incorporated in carbon footprint estimations. This paper proposes a new carbon footprint calculator, the Carbon Footprint Simulation Dashboard—COMPAIR's CO2 calculator. The CO2 calculator employs Citizen Science (CS) information in order to assist citizens in understanding and comparing how future carbon emissions will be modified in accordance with changes in their daily routines. The calculator offers several statistics, e.g., the country's average carbon footprint and comparisons between EU members with respect to sectors that shape it, along with several recommendations for those domains where carbon footprint is significantly higher than the desired limits. The novelty of this tool is the integration of waste management strategies as a dimension of the total CO2 calculation. In this framework, the study presents the development of the Carbon Footprint Simulation Dashboard while two different waste management scenarios are applied with different citizen behaviours on recycling and composting. The applications highlighted the consumption in buildings that account for almost 50% of the total CO2 emissions, while the crucial role of transportation is also a key parameter. The different waste management scenarios showed a correlation between the CO2 footprint and the overall consumption/disposal habits of citizens. Purpose: This paper investigates the (a)symmetric effects of financial development in the presence of economic growth, energy consumption, urbanization and foreign direct investment on environmental quality of South Africa between 1980 and 2017. Design/methodology/approach: A robust measure of financial development is generated using banking institutions and non-banking institutions market-based financial development indicators, while environmental quality is measured using carbon footprint, non-carbon footprint and ecological footprint. The objectives of the study are captured using linear and non-linear autoregressive distributed lag. Findings: The result from the symmetric analysis suggests that financial development stimulates carbon footprint and ecological footprint in the short run; however, financial development abates non-carbon footprint. In the long run, financial development has a significant negative effect on carbon footprint and ecological footprint. However, the asymmetric analysis established strong asymmetric effect in the short run, while no asymmetric effect is found in the long run. The short run asymmetric analysis reveals that positive shock in financial development increases carbon footprint and ecological footprint; however, positive changes in financial development reduce non-carbon footprint. Negative shocks in financial development, on the other hand, have a positive impact carbon footprint, non-carbon footprint and ecological footprint. Practical implications: The study's outcome implies that the concept of "more finance, more growth" could also be applied to "more finance, better environment" in South Africa. The study offers vital policy suggestions for the realization of sustainable development in South Africa. Mobile bottom contact gear such as trawls is widely considered to have the highest environmental impact of commonly used fishing gears, with concern about impact on benthic communities, bycatch, and carbon footprint frequently highlighted as much higher than other forms of fishing. As a result, the use of such gears has been banned or severely restricted in some countries, and there are many proposals to implement such restrictions elsewhere. In this paper, we review the sustainability of bottom trawling with respect to target-species sustainability, impact on benthic communities, bycatch and discards, carbon footprint from fuel use, and impact on carbon sequestration. We compare the impact to other forms of fishing and other food production systems. We show that bottom-trawl and dredge fisheries have been sustained, and where well managed, stocks are increasing. Benthic sedimentary habitats remain in good condition where fishing pressure is well managed and where VME and species of concern can be protected by spatial management. Bycatch is intrinsically high because of the mixed-species nature of benthic communities. The carbon footprint is on average higher than chicken or pork, but much less than beef, and can be much lower than chicken or pork. The impact on carbon sequestration remains highly uncertain. Overall, the concerns about trawling impacts can be significantly mitigated when existing technical gear and management measures (e.g. gear design changes and spatial controls) are adopted by industry and regulatory bodies and the race-to-fish eliminated. When these management measures are implemented, it appears that bottom trawling would have a lower environmental impact than livestock or fed aquaculture, which would likely replace trawl-caught fish if trawling was banned. A total of 83 bottom-trawl fisheries are currently certified by the Marine Stewardship Council, which is the most widely accepted measure of overall sustainability. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Carbon footprint is a widely used tool to measure the impact of human activities on global warming. The lockdowns caused by the COVID-19 pandemic have significantly changed energy consumption forms and decreased CO2 emissions worldwide. This research is a trial to elaborate the effect of COVID-19 pandemic on the carbon footprint of the High Institute of Public Health (HIPH). Objective(s): The present study aimed at measuring the amount of water, electricity, fuel, and paper consumption by HIPH before and during the emergence of COVID-19 and assessing the carbon footprint of the HIPH population inside the building through the same period. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was done using a pre-designed questionnaire targeting 10 % of the HIPH population before and during the pandemic. Bills of water, electricity, paper, and fuel consumption were used to calculate the carbon footprint for one year before and one year during COVID-19. Results: Online responses increased during COVID-19 emergence (69.2% during COVID-19 pandemic versus 44.1% before COVID-19 pandemic). Females were more than 2/3 of the respondents (70.6%). There was a significant difference in traveling outside Egypt before and during COVID-19 (X2=12.794, p-value=0.002). A significant reduction in the average time spent in front of the computer at HIPH was found during the emergence of COVID-19 as most of the work became from home (X2= 18.443, p-value= 0.001). Significant reduction in the consumption of hot drinks, cold drinks, bottled water and food inside the HIPH was noticed (X2=50.219, p-value<0.0001; X2=12.030, p-value=0.017; X2=15.945, p-value=0.004; X2=72.929, p-value<0.0001 respectively). The carbon footprint of HIPH in the period from July 2018 to June 2019 was 79.43MT of CO2e. In the period from July 2020 to June 2021, it was 59.85MT of CO2e with a 25% reduction in the emission. Conclusion: The carbon footprint of HIPH was reduced during the lockdown period compared to that before the epidemic. Since the concept of carbon asset is still new to most power enterprises, they generally lack the knowledge and experience of carbon asset management, to help them cope with the related works, this paper proposes a carbon footprint tracking and quantitative analysis model for power enterprises based on thermodynamics. At first, by employing thermodynamic theories, this paper established an inventory model through the measurement and calculation of carbon concentration and carbon emissions, which can fix defective items, improve inventory efficiency, and save inventory cost. Then, the paper used thermo-economics and the TOPSIS method to construct a carbon inventory index system containing indexes such as carbon exergy ratio and regulation interval, which can reduce the error of carbon emission intensity and update the carbon account information in a timely manner. After that, the carbon footprint was calculated by coupling the carbon thermal map with the multi-dimensional evaluation mechanism, thereby achieving accurate control of carbon emissions and realizing the energy-saving and emissionreduction goals. At last, the attained experimental results showed that, the proposed carbon inventory measurement model established based on thermodynamics can effectively regulate the emission behavior of power enterprises, help achieve the ultimate purposes of reducing cost, increasing efficiency, and optimizing environment. Carbon neutrality is a requisite for industrial development in modern times. In this paper, we review information on possible applications of polymers from the energy crop Miscanthus in the global industries, and we highlight the life cycle aspects of Miscanthus in detail. We discuss the benefits of Miscanthus cultivation on unoccupied marginal lands as well as the rationale for the capabilities of Miscanthus regarding both soil carbon storage and soil remediation. We also discuss key trends in the processing of Miscanthus biopolymers for applications such as a fuel resources, as part of composite materials, and as feedstock for fractionation in order to extract cellulose, lignin, and other valuable chemicals (hydroxymethylfurfural, furfural, phenols) for the subsequent chemical synthesis of a variety of products. The potentialities of the biotechnological transformation of the Miscanthus biomass into carbohydrate nutrient media and then into the final products of microbiological synthesis are also examined herein. The production of hydrogen as both chemical feed and energy carrier using low-carbon technologies is one of the solutions to reach net-zero emissions. This paper, firstly, reviews the publications on the life-cycle assessment of photovoltaic (PV)-based hydrogen production focused on the carbon footprint. Secondly, it updates the global warming potential (GWP) values of this H2 production process considering the state-of-the-art PV panels for installation in Italy. In the literature, H2 produced in Europe and the rest of the world results in a mean GWP equal to 4.83 and 3.82 kg CO2 eq./kg H2, respectively, in which PV systems contribute the highest share. The average efficiency of PV panels assumed in the literature is lower than the current PV modules. Updating the supply chain, efficiency, and manufacturing energy and material flows of PV modules can decrease the GWP value of the H2 produced by nearly 60% (1.75 kg CO2 eq./kg H2, with use of alkaline electrolyzer) in the Italian context, which can be further reduced with advancements in PV panels or electrolysis efficiency. As the urgency to mitigate climate change intensifies, the achievement of zero carbon targets in the built environment has become a critical objective. Building retrofitting plays a vital role in reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions in existing buildings. This paper presents an approach that combines Building Information Modeling (BIM) with multiple domains to strive for zero carbon targets in building retrofit projects. The proposed approach is based on a dynamic multi-parameter analysis that integrates indoor comfort, energy savings, CO2eq reduction, and the social cost of carbon while considering investment costs. Renewable energy technologies, such as photovoltaic panels and solar thermal systems, are emphasized to achieve the desired zero-carbon outcomes. Real-time monitoring mechanisms enable continuous performance evaluation and adaptive retrofit strategies for further energy savings. This approach is validated through a case study of an existing thermal bath building, known as "Terme Lucane", located in southern Italy. The results of the study demonstrate significant reductions in energy consumption and carbon emissions, highlighting the potential of the proposed approach to achieve zero carbon targets through the integration of multi-data BIM implementation. In this paper, the authors begin their scientific approach by briefly defining the most representative types of ecological houses currently in existence, together with their particularities. Also, a series of energy-efficient houses are presented, with the aim of identifying their efficiency elements. Also in the introductory part, the authors have made a tabular comparison between the properties of ecological construction materials and those of usual materials/traditional ones with the aim of showing that ecological materials can substitute the usual ones, having similar characteristics and properties and many times, even superior to them. The modeling stage assumed, in a first phase, the identification of the most efficient type of house and material, then used to fulfill the proposed purpose. In addition, the installations and systems suitable for the site area and the designed house model were chosen, ensuring its operation in an ecological way. Controlling household consumption is an essential means to achieve carbon neutrality in China, and population ageing has an important impact on its structure. Since older people exhibit different consumption patterns than younger people, an increase in the proportion of aged people affects overall consumption patterns. This paper adopts an input–output model to reflect the heterogeneity in the consumption structure and household carbon footprint of different age groups, followed by a simulation of the future household carbon footprint. The results find that in China, the total household carbon footprint shows an inverted U-shape with age, with the lowest total carbon footprint coming from aged households (age of household head 65 and above) and the highest total carbon footprint from middle-aged households (age of household head 45–54). The average household carbon footprint decreases with age, with aged households remaining the lowest. Aged households, however, have the highest share of the direct carbon footprint. Interestingly, urban households of all ages have a higher carbon footprint than rural households, with the largest difference being among aged households. The projection results show that based on demographic changes, although the average household carbon footprint of elderly households in China is low, as the number of elderly households increases, the total carbon footprint of elderly households will be sizable and need to be taken seriously. The total carbon footprint of elderly households will become more significant and sizable as the number of elderly households increases. Urban life is more carbon-intensive, and China's urbanization is leading to an increase in the carbon footprint. Aged households require more attention in future climate policies. Targeted, consumption-based climate policies are necessary for carbon reduction in China and will have relevance in other countries with similar consumption structure and demographic trends, e.g. with ageing or rapidly urbanizing populations. Public buildings are energy-intensive users, especially when energy management is lacking. More than ever, the use of energy efficiency strategies and renewable energy sources (RES) in buildings are a national priority for Morocco in order to improve energy self-sufficiency, replace fossil fuel use and lower energy bills and greenhouse gas emissions. Relating to the exemplarity of the Moroccan government in terms of energy efficiency and sustainable development, the study support that aim and presents results of a deep energy performance analysis of more than 20 university campuses across Morocco, which has concluded that around 80% of the energy consumed in the university campuses is designated for lightning and hot water for sanitary use. Later, this study examined the potential for energy saving and the environmental benefits of implementing actions to reduce energy demand from the grid, considering the use of on-site solar energy. Thereafter, the study aimed to analyze the impact of RES integration in public university campuses, namely the photovoltaic (ESM1) for electricity output and solar thermal system for hot water use (ESM2), to assess the techno-economic-environmental performance on building energy consumption reduction. Hence, the paper reported a detailed energetic-economic and environmental (3E) analysis simulation for campuses by integration of the two Energy Saving Measurements (ESM). The results showed that the integration of ESM1 system can reduce the annual energy demand by 22% and the energy bill by 34%, whereas the integration of ESM2 achieved 67% in energy saving. According to the analysis of the results, the integration of ESM1 is expected to save 6044 MWh of electrical energy annually on the 30222 MWh for all campuses and 2559 MWh for ESM2 which is equivalent to 284 m3/yr of diesel. With the reduced energy consumption, it is possible to cut down fossil fuels for electricity production and offset greenhouse gas emissions by 672 tons of carbon dioxide annually. Besides, the evaluation of results showed that the energy performance indicator was reduced from 530 kWh/bed/yr to 248 kWh/bed/yr, which represents 56% of energy saving. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The role of searching for industrial waste management solutions in construction is key for environmental protection. Research in recent years has focused on solutions aimed at reducing the carbon footprint. This paper presents the results of tests conducted on concrete reinforced with treated recycled tyre steel fibres (RTSFs) compared to the same amount of manufactured steel fibres (MSFs). The effectiveness of concrete reinforcement with RTSFs was analysed using the fracture mechanics parameters of cementitious composites. Rheological tests, residual flexural tensile strength tests, work of fracture measurements, toughness indices, examinations of the fibre distribution in the concrete, and SEM observations of the concrete fractures with fibres were performed. Determining the work of fracture and toughness indices was an innovative aspect of this paper. As the amount of RTSFs increased, a decrease in the consistency was observed, although the distribution of fibres in the concrete was uniform, as proven by the results of computer tomography tests. Concrete reinforced with RTSFs that is purified and refined during the recycling process might have better properties than concrete reinforced with the same amount of MSFs. In recent years, it has become essential to consider the total carbon footprint of a construction project. Commonly, the question has been: ’What is the best material to be used in this context?’ In this paper we argue that this question is incomplete, not taking the complexity of design choices into consideration. This paper intends to share light on how to analyse some factors that influence the construction of buildings in order to contribute to climate change mitigation, taking this complexity into consideration. Calculation of fossil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for two load-bearing structures for office buildings in 4, 8 and 16 storeys with equal functional requirements; e.g. load bearing capacity, acoustic performance, fire resistance and adaptability are addressed. The main materials for the load-bearing structures are cross laminated timber (CLT) elements and precast concrete elements respectively. The result show that one cannot on a general basis conclude that either type of load-bearing structure cause less fossil GHG emissions. It is always important to consider the building design, functionality as well as external conditions such as location when considering different load-bearing structure materials. This paper focuses on the use of numerical tools, as a finite elements method, to conceive fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) eco-constructions. It highlights the fact that these are the most suitable tools (much more than the Eurocodes, for example) to predict the cracking process of FRC constructions at their service limit state and, therefore, to predict their durability. Following a critical analysis of the existing finite element models for FRC cracking, it describes in more detail a probabilistic one. This model appears very suitable for providing precise information about crack openings that are inferior or equal to 300 microns. Finally, it presents an example of the use of this numerical model to optimize an FRC track slab in order to reduce its carbon footprint. Hospitals generate huge amounts of nonwoven residues daily. This paper focused on studying the evolution of nonwoven waste generated in the Francesc de Borja Hospital, Spain, over the last few years and its relation to the COVID-19 pandemic. The main objective was to identify the most impacting pieces of nonwoven equipment in the hospital and to analyze possible solutions. The carbon footprint of the nonwoven equipment was studied through a life-cycle assessment. The results showed an apparent increase in the carbon footprint in the hospital from 2020. Additionally, due to the higher annual volume, the simple nonwoven gown used primarily for patients had a higher carbon footprint over a year than the more sophisticated surgical gowns. It can be concluded that developing a local circular economy strategy for medical equipment could be the solution to avoid the enormous waste generation and the carbon footprint of nonwoven production. Polymer concrete (PC) has been used to replace cement concrete when harsh service conditions exist. Polymers have a high carbon footprint when considering their life cycle analysis, and with increased climate change concerns and the need to reduce greenhouse gas emission, bio-based polymers could be used as a sustainable alternative binder to produce PC. This paper examines the development and characterization of a novel bio-polymer concrete (BPC) using bio-based polyurethane used as the binder in lieu of cement, modified with benzoic acid and carboxyl-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The mechanical performance, durability, microstructure, and chemical properties of BPC are investigated. Moreover, the effect of the addition of benzoic acid and MWCNTs on the properties of BPC is studied. The new BPC shows relatively low density, appreciable compressive strength between 20–30 MPa, good tensile strength of 4 MPa, and excellent durability resistance against aggressive environments. The new BPC has a low carbon footprint, 50% lower than ordinary Portland cement concrete, and can provide a sustainable concrete alternative in infrastructural applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The overall development of the cloud paradigm is a dominating omnipresence in the industry 4.0 business world. Over the last decade, the control measures for power utilization among the proliferative Hyper-Scale Data Centers (HSDCs) have been elucidated. However, the lack of attention to regulating power in Small and Medium-Scale Data Centers (SMSDCs) has ensued in excessive power drainage in small- and medium-scale cloud data centers. The crucial factor for excessive power utilization of SMSDCs encompasses providing excessive resources, high certainty tasks. Majority of the previously reported studies zeroed-in on problems associated with hyper-scale data centers, excluding probes of the issues prevalent in small- and medium-scale cloud data centers. This paper proffers a framework for a predictive optimization approach for delivering the data center services to end-users. In the first phase, the Multi-Output (MO) Random Forest Regressor (RFR) (MO-RFR) concurrently predicts the multiple-resource utilization of Virtual Machines (VMs). The predictive framework outcome was utilized by the Multi-Objective Particle Swarm Optimization (MO-PSO) framework in the second phase to resolve the issue in virtual machine placement and to accomplish better physical machine consolidation. The proposed multi-prediction-based MO-PSO escalates resource usage, minimizing power utilization and curtailing the carbon footprint. The efficacy of the proposed approach was appraised via performance metrics and actual workload traces. The acquired result from the proposed method outperforms the baseline approaches. Mitigation actions in all sectors of society, including sports, to limit global warming have become an increasingly hot topic in public discussions and sports management. However, so far, there has been a lack of understanding and practical examples of how these organizations, especially in team sports, can holistically assess and reduce their climate impacts to achieve carbon neutrality. This paper presents a carbon footprint assessment, implemented actions for GHG emission reduction, and offers the example of a professional Finnish ice hockey team that achieved carbon neutrality. The study is based on a life cycle assessment method. The Results show that the team's carbon footprint was reduced from 350 tCO 2eq by more than 50% between seasons 2018–2019 and 2021–2022 in the assessed categories. The most GHG emission reductions were achieved in the team's and spectators' mobility and ice hall energy consumption. Furthermore, the team compensated for their remaining emissions to achieve carbon neutrality. Multiple possibilities for further GHG emission reductions were recognized. The majority of the GHG emissions were linked to the Scope 3 category, indicating that co-operation with partners and stakeholders was a key to success in attaining carbon neutrality. This paper also discusses the possible limitations and challenges that sport organizations face in assessing climate impacts and reducing GHG emissions, as well as the prospects of overcoming them. Since there are many opportunities for sports to contribute to climate change mitigation, relevant targets and actions to reduce GHG emissions should be integrated into all sport organizations' management. In the context of global warming, agriculture, as the second-largest source of greenhouse gas emissions after industry, had attracted widespread attention from all walks of life to reduce agricultural emissions. The carbon footprint of the planting production system of the Heilongjiang Land Reclamation Area (HLRA), an important commodity grain base in China, was evaluated and analyzed in this paper. On this basis, this paper sought feasible strategies to reduce carbon emissions from two aspects: agronomic practices and cropping structure adjustment, which were particularly crucial to promote the low-carbon and sustainable development of agriculture in HLRA. Therefore, using the accounting methods in IPCC and Low Carbon Development and Guidelines for the Preparation of Provincial Greenhouse Gas Inventories compiled by the Chinese government, relevant data were collected from 2000 to 2017 in HLRA and accounted for the carbon emissions of the planting production system in four aspects: carbon emissions from agricultural inputs, N2O emissions from managed soils, CH4 emissions from rice cultivation and straw burning emissions. Then carbon uptake consisted of seeds and straws. Finally, with farmers' incomes were set as the objective function and carbon emissions per unit of gross production value was set as the constraint, this paper simulated and optimized the cropping structure in HLRA. The results showed that there was a "stable-growing-declining" trend in the total carbon emissions and carbon uptake of the planting production system in HLRA, with total carbon emissions of 2.84x1010 kg and total carbon uptake of 7.49x1010 kg in 2017. In the past 18 years, carbon emissions per unit area and carbon emissions per unit of gross production had both shown a decreasing trend. To achieve further efficiency gains and emission reductions in the planting production system, it was recommended that the local governments strengthen the comprehensive use of straw resources, optimize irrigation and fertilization techniques, and adjust the cropping structure, i.e., increase the planting area of maize and soybeans and reduce the planting area of rice, and increase subsidies to protect the economic returns of planters.
