Building on the legacy of the three previous conferences since 2013, the 2017 International Conference on Behavioral Addictions (ICBA) offered one of the largest selections of original academic research into compulsive sexual behavior and pornography use ever presented. This review gives a flavor of the best papers and the key contributions to our fast-evolving understanding of compulsive sexuality and pornography use. This report is not fully comprehensive as the use of parallel sessions meant that we could not see all relevant papers. The Journal of Behavioral Addictions has published all abstracts in a special edition (volume 6, supplement 1). A single strand of the parallel sessions was wholly dedicated to research into sex and pornography. Taken collectively, the presentations demonstrated the strengths of several national research teams, in particular those from Germany, Poland, Hungary, Israel, and the United States. The plenary given for the sexual strand by Matthias Brand explored the I-PACE model (Interaction of Person-Affect-Cognition-Execution) in specific Internet addictions, including for cybersex addiction. The significant proliferation of research papers in both conferences and journals has made it difficult for researchers to easily access relevant scholarly papers for academic learning. This has been a substantial problem for many researchers. Conferences, in comparison with journals, have an aspect of social learning and networking, which leads to personal familiarisation through various interactions among researchers. In this paper, we improve the social awareness of conference participants by proposing a novel folksonomy-based paper recommendation algorithm, called socially aware recommendation of scholarly papers (SARSP). SARSP recommends papers issued by active participants (APs), to other Group Profile Participants at the same conference based on preference similarity of their research interests. In addition, SARSP computes the social ties between an AP and other conference participants to effectively generate social recommendations of scholarly papers. We evaluate our proposed algorithm using a real-world data-set. Our experimental results confirm that SARSP has significant improvement over other existing methods. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The editor reflects on the special issue of the periodical which is based on the 2012 International Microwave Symposium held on June 17-22, 2012 in Montreal, Quebec. He mentions that due to increased number of submissions to the special issue, it has been divided into two issues the first one was published in December 2012, and the next one in January 2013. He adds that the aim behind including conference papers in the issue is to present results that might help improve engineering designs.

The article analyzes the presentation of convention papers as an indicator of the quantity of faculty productivity. There have been a number of studies directed toward the establishment of faculty research productivity through the analysis of publications and editorial boards in the field of speech communication. The argument for establishing such criteria are numerous: incoming graduate students need some means of assessing effective graduate programs; more and more departments are being challenged by boards of trustees and legislators to prove their productivity, both in the classroom and in other service and research areas of academia; in budget crunches, departments have to prove their worth to the university versus other departments on the same campus; and such tools for analyzing productivity provide information for assessing the discipline as a whole. Faculty members who have had long standing in professional association are well aware that much of the research that appears in journals is first presented at conventions. The number of presentations at the Southern Speech Communication Association conventions was selected as an indicator of faculty productivity by department.

This document is a summary of selected topics from the 29th International Colloquium on the Dynamics of Explosions and Reactive Systems (ICDERS) held in Siheung, Korea in July 2023. The conference focused on the dynamic aspects of reactive systems and included presentations on explosions, detonations, ignition, turbulent combustion, and other topics in combustion. The current issue of the journal Shock Waves includes ten papers that were presented at the conference, covering areas such as shock tube design, shock wave methane pyrolysis, detonation physics, and rotating detonation engine propulsion systems. This study tests the hypothesis that the contributed papers at the 12 ACRL national conferences do not cover topics of interest to technical services librarians in proportion to their membership in ACRL. The analysis showed that 14.66% of contributed papers dealt with subjects that were part of the charge of ALCTS, the technical services division in ALA, and its five sections. This percentage dropped to 7.52% with the removal of collection development papers that are also of high interest to many public services librarians. Current overlap statistics indicate that 18.83% of ACRL members also belong to ALCTS-an indication of potential ACRL member interest in technical services topics. An unexpected discovery was that the contributed papers became much more holistic with the arrival of the Internet and electronic resources in academic libraries and, starting with the 1999 Detroit national conference, were much more difficult to categorize into specialized niches. The author speculates that the attendance at the national conferences by a high proportion of librarians from small to mid-size academic libraries discourages papers on technical services topics since technical services librarians are more likely to work in large ARL libraries. This paper, an update of a paper published in 2003 (1), identifies a number of papers presented at the NSREC and published in the IEEE Transactions on Nuclear Science that have had measurable impact on radiation effects research and the radiation effects community. Criteria include papers selected for the Outstanding Paper Award at the NSREC or papers from the NSREC that have been highly cited by authors of other journal publications. Objective: To determine journal publication rates of scientific papers presented orally at the European Congress of Radiology (ECR) 2010, with comparison of country data to ECR 2000. Methods: All oral presentations from ECR 2010 were evaluated for publication between 2010 and 2014 using the MEDLINE database. Countries, collaborations, subspecialties, modalities and study design were ranked by publication percentage. Chi-square tests were used to compare publication percentages for each category of variables. Hazard ratios (HR) were calculated for each country relative to the host nation, Austria. ECR 2010 country statistics were compared with analogous data from ECR 2000. Results: In total, 360/840 abstracts were subsequently published (43 %). The author's country of origin ( p = 0.02), subspecialty ( p = 0.02) and study design ( p = 0.001) were significantly associated with subsequent publication. Switzerland, the Netherlands, France and Germany were among the top six countries by publication percentage in 2000 and 2010. In 2010, Switzerland had the highest publication rate (62 %) and HR in comparison to Austria (HR 2.62 [1.31-5.25], p = 0.01). Three Asian nations increased relative publication rates over the 10-year period. Conclusion: Several European nations consistently convert relatively high percentages of oral abstracts at ECR into publications, and the influence of Asian countries is increasing. This paper reflects on conferences of the first five years of the International Academy of African Business and Development (IAABD: 2000-2004) focusing specifically on the conference proceedings. The papers presented at the five conferences and published in their proceedings were reviewed and analysed in terms of functional areas covered, the research methodologies employed, as well as the geographical spread and country focus of the authors. Conference proceedings are one of the most important forms of communication for computer scientists. This study investigated the policies of a large number of computer science journals with regard to the republication of papers which had already appeared in conference proceedings. Nearly one-quarter of journal editors would not republish such papers other than in special circumstances (such as a special conference issue), and almost all of the remainder would do so only after substantial updating and expansion of the original paper. Many specified the amount of content that should be new: 30% was the proportion most frequently mentioned. Thus, many sections of text may be identical to the original paper. However, some journal editors do not appear to consider this self-plagiarism provided the original publication is properly cited. Nevertheless, such (re)publication is likely to lead to high similarity scores in CrossCheck; in this field, therefore, journal editors need to exercise particular discretion when evaluating CrossCheck results. The 9th International Conference on Forest Fire Research, organised by the Forest Fire Research Center of the Association for Developmental of Industrial Aerodynamics every 4 years since 1990, was held in November 2022 in Coimbra, Portugal. The conference was held in conjunction with the 17th International Wildland Fire Safety Summit, sponsored by the International Association of Wildland Fire. The number and quality of the submissions for this joint event was very high, and the authors were encouraged to submit a full paper to a special issue of the International Journal of Wildland Fire (IJWF). Given the large number of submissions, the Journal decided to publish the special issue in four parts. Part 1 was published in January 2023, with eight papers, Part 2 in March 2023, with 10 papers and Part 3 in June 2023 with 15 papers. This fourth part presents 10 original papers, in three areas: Decision Support Systems and Tools (3), Risk Assessment & Reduction (3) and the Wildland Urban Interface (4).
