Postures at work are paramount in ergonomics. They can be determined using observation and inclinometry in a variety of measurement scenarios that may differ both in costs associated with collecting and processing data, and in efficiency, i.e. the precision of the eventual outcome. The trade-off between cost and efficiency has rarely been addressed in research despite the obvious interest of obtaining precise data at low costs. Median trunk and upper arm inclination were determined for full shifts in 28 paper mill workers using both observation and inclinometry. Costs were estimated using comprehensive cost equations; and efficiency, i.e. the inverted standard deviation of the group mean, was assessed on basis of exposure variance components. Cost and efficiency were estimated in simulations of six sampling scenarios: two for inclinometry (sampling from one or three shifts) and four for observation (one or three observers rating one or three shifts). Each of the six scenarios was evaluated for 1 through 50 workers. Cost-efficiency relationships between the scenarios were intricate. As an example, inclinometry was always more cost-efficient than observation for trunk inclination, except for observation strategies involving only few workers; while for arm inclination, observation by three observers of one shift per worker outperformed inclinometry on three shifts up to a budget of €20000, after which inclinometry prevailed. At a budget of €10000, the best sampling scenario for arm inclination was 2.5 times more efficient than the worst. Arm inclination could be determined with better cost-efficiency than trunk inclination. Our study illustrates that the cost-efficiency of different posture measurement strategies can be assessed and compared using easily accessible diagrams. While the numeric examples in our study are specific to the investigated occupation, exposure variables, and sampling logistics, we believe that inclinometry will, in general, outperform observation. In any specific case, we recommend a thorough analysis, using the comparison procedure proposed in the present study, of feasible strategies for obtaining data, in order to arrive at an informed decision support. Increasing the filler content in paper to reduce the cost of materials is an ongoing effort among papermakers. Selecting the proper calcium carbonate additive for each type of paper is the key to achieving this goal. Calcium carbonate is the most widely used filler material in the paper industry. On average, it is applied at levels of 18% to 30%. Quality requirements of each type of paper vary widely, according to use; understanding the effect that different types of calcium carbonate have on paper properties allows producers to choose the best filler for each use. Given that the market for uncoated digital printing paper is expected to grow, this study focused on selecting the optimal calcium carbonate for the production of uncoated digital printing paper made from 100% eucalyptus pulp. In this study, 13 varieties of calcium carbonates were used to prepare handsheets for the detailed analyses of structural, optical, and strength properties. The samples included nine varieties of precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) (two rhombic and seven scalenohedral, covering a particle size range from 1.2 pm to 2.9 |jm) and four varieties of ground calcium carbonate (GCC) (three anionic and one cationic, with a particle size range of 0.7 pm to 1.5 (jm). From the results of this study, we determined that the optimal calcium carbonate for uncoated digital printing paper made from eucalyptus pulp is scalenohedral PCC with a particle size of 1.9 pm, because of its positive effects on caliper, stiffness, brightness, and opacity. Abstract: Excessive water consumption in pulp and paper industry results in high amount of wastewater. Pollutant characteristics of the wastewater vary depending on the processes used in production and the quality of paper produced. However, in general, high organic material and suspended solid contents are considered as major pollutants of pulp and paper industry effluents. The major pollutant characteristics of pulp and paper industry effluents in Turkey were surveyed and means of major pollutant concentrations, which were grouped in three different pollution grades (low, moderate and high strength effluents), and flow rates within 3000 to 10,000m3/day range with 1000m3/day steps were used as design parameters. Ninety-six treatment plants were designed using twelve flow schemes which were combinations of physical treatment, chemical treatment, aerobic and anaerobic biological processes. Detailed comparative cost analysis which includes investment, operation, maintenance and rehabilitation costs was prepared to determine optimum treatment processes for each pollution grade. The most economic and technically optimal treatment processes were found as extended aeration activated sludge process for low strength effluents, extended aeration activated sludge process or UASB followed by an aeration basin for medium strength effluents, and UASB followed by an aeration basin or UASB followed by the conventional activated sludge process for high strength effluents. Speckle is undesirable and inevitable in laser projection systems. Current methods to reduce the speckle, such as multiple wavelength laser, moving diffuser, etc., required additional part, which increase the systems cost. Herein, we reported a low cost and simple technique to reduce the speckle in laser projection system by using a screen with multilayer structure (we named it as speckle reduction screen). In our case, this screen is composed of a high reflection layer, a high transparent layer and a particle arrays layer of microspheres. A diffuse mechanism can be provided by the particle arrays layer of microspheres in this method to reduce speckle. The introduction of a particle array layer can effectively enhance the speckle homogenization by increasing the speckle amount, thereby reducing speckle contrast and resulting in a more blurred speckle pattern. Compared to the standard white projection screen, the speckle contrast ratio of the speckle reduction screen dramatically decreases about 60% under the illumination of RGB laser. Many microfluidic "lab on paper" devices have been demonstrated for point-of-use applications, but scalable fabrication methods are necessary for these devices to make it past the proof-of-concept stage and become viable commercial products. Commercially available wax printers such as the Xerox ColorQube presented a near-ideal compromise between cost, ease of prototyping, and throughput, but in 2016, these printers were discontinued, and now, alternative methods are needed. In this review, we survey current paper analytical device (PAD) fabrication methods through the lens of scalability, focusing on the tradeoffs between resolution, ease of prototyping, cost, and throughput. Categories discussed include handmade, semi-automated, batch, laboratory-based, printer-based, and roll-to-roll fabrication methods. Hand-, batch-, semi-automated, and laboratory-based fabrication methods suffer from low throughput and high hands-on labor requirements. Roll-to-roll methods are high throughput but costly, while printer-based methods offer a compromise between cost and throughput. By highlighting the comparative merits of existing methods, we hope to offer insight into what makes a method "scalable" or "manufacturable." • We compare throughput, cost, ease of prototyping, and resolution for 25 classes of paper device fabrication methods. • Most fabrication methods are not suitable for medium- or large-scale manufacture. • Printer-based and roll-to-roll methods offer the most direct translation from lab to factory scale. Intermediaries—such as Amazon, Alibaba Group, and Walmart—play critical roles in digital markets: This paper proposes a model for analyzing how search cost affects their market outcomes. Distinguished from existing search literature, we introduce network effects to the market by allowing buyers to have positive preferences for product variety. In addition, we relax the exogenous demand and supply assumptions in the conventional search literature to study how search affects participation on both sides of the market. Through the model, we focus on studying and comparing two important types of intermediary: the two-sided platform; and the one-sided retailer. We find that reducing search costs does not necessarily increase the profit of both intermediary types. The INDDEX24 Dietary Assessment Platform (INDDEX24) was developed to facilitate the collection of 24-h dietary recall (24HR) data. Alongside validation studies in Viet Nam and Burkina Faso in 2019–2020, we conducted activity-based costing studies to estimate the cost of conducting a 24HR among women of reproductive age using INDDEX24 compared with the pen-and-paper interview (PAPI) approach. We also modelled alternative scenarios in which: (1) 25–75 % of dietary reference data were borrowed from the INDDEX24 Global Food Matters Database (FMDB); (2) all study personnel were locally based and (3) national-scale surveys. In the primary analysis, in Viet Nam, the 24HR cost US $111 004 ($755/respondent, n 147) using INDDEX24 and $120 483 ($820/respondent, n 147) using PAPI. In Burkina Faso, the 24HR cost $78 105 ($539/respondent, n 145) using INDDEX24 and $79 465 ($544/respondent, n 146) using PAPI. In modelled scenarios, borrowing dietary reference data from the FMDB decreased the cost of INDDEX24 by 17–34 % (Viet Nam) and 5–15 % (Burkina Faso). With all locally based personnel, INDDEX24 cost more than PAPI ($498 v. $448 per respondent in Viet Nam and $456 v. $410 in Burkina Faso). However, at national scales (n 4376, Viet Nam; n 6500, Burkina Faso) using all locally based personnel, INDDEX24 was more cost-efficient ($109 v. $137 per respondent in Viet Nam and $123 v. $148 in Burkina Faso). In two countries and under most circumstances, INDDEX24 was less expensive than PAPI. Higher INDDEX24 survey preparation costs (including purchasing equipment) were more than offset by higher PAPI data entry, cleaning and processing costs. Abstract: Adoption of energy efficient technologies is considered a key sustainability strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in global industries. This article aims to assess costs of energy savings and carbon reduction from applying energy efficiency technologies in the US pulp and paper sector. Applicable efficiency measures were identified and their cost effectiveness was evaluated in two historical years – 1994 and 2006. Potential savings of final energy use resulting from applicable sustainability options were estimated as 707 PJ in 1994 and 1064 PJ in 2006, respectively, corresponding to approximately 32% of the sector''s annual final energy use in 1994 and 62% in 2006. The associated carbon-emission reduction was 8.1 million ton of carbon (MtC) in 1994 and 11.8MtC in 2006, corresponding to 26% and 45% of sector''s total energy-related carbon emissions in 1994 and 2006, respectively. Using the concepts of cost of conserved energy and cost of carbon reduction, we estimated that cost effective sustainability options contributed to final energy savings in the range of 15–25% of the annual energy use, and carbon-emission reduction from 14% to 20% of annual carbon emissions from the sector. MicroLED display is an innovative display technology with high brightness, wide color gamut, high aperture ratio, and excellent reliability. MicroLED represents a new era in display technology, and it is rapidly entering the mass production phase. It can be used in traditional display applications and can also be applied to various innovative display technologies, such as AR glasses, transparent displays, electric vehicles, or other new use cases, expanding the application of displays into more fields. Abstract Background There are a variety of costs associated with publication of scientific findings. The purpose of this work was to estimate the cost of peer review in scientific publishing per reviewer, per year and for the entire scientific community. Methods Internet-based self-report, cross-sectional survey, live between June 28, 2021 and August 2, 2021 was used. Participants were recruited via snowball sampling. No restrictions were placed on geographic location or field of study. Respondents who were asked to act as a peer-reviewer for at least one manuscript submitted to a scientific journal in 2020 were eligible. The primary outcome measure was the cost of peer review per person, per year (calculated as wage-cost x number of initial reviews and number of re-reviews per year). The secondary outcome was the cost of peer review globally (calculated as the number of peer-reviewed papers in Scopus x median wage-cost of initial review and re-review). Results A total of 354 participants completed at least one question of the survey, and information necessary to calculate the cost of peer-review was available for 308 participants from 33 countries (44% from Canada). The cost of peer review was estimated at $US1,272 per person, per year ($US1,015 for initial review and $US256 for re-review), or US$1.1–1.7 billion for the scientific community per year. The global cost of peer-review was estimated at US$6 billion in 2020 when relying on the Dimensions database and taking into account reviewed-but-rejected manuscripts. Conclusions Peer review represents an important financial piece of scientific publishing. Our results may not represent all countries or fields of study, but are consistent with previous estimates and provide additional context from peer reviewers themselves. Researchers and scientists have long provided peer review as a contribution to the scientific community. Recognizing the importance of peer-review, institutions should acknowledge these costs in job descriptions, performance measurement, promotion packages, and funding applications. Journals should develop methods to compensate reviewers for their time and improve transparency while maintaining the integrity of the peer-review process.

The authors analyze the problem of rationally selecting a procedure for determining the chloride ion contect in concrete and reinforced concrete structures, since the presence of chlorides affects the rate of corrosion of reinforcing steel. A review of the standardized and certified methods of the quantitative chemical analysis for determining the chloride ion content in concrete and reinforced concrete structures is given. The paper presents the results of a comparative analysis of the procedures, commonly used in the construction industry, which are based on argentometric, phototurbidimetric, and potentiometric (ionometric) methods using the following criteria: "Purpose and scope of the analytical procedure," "Analytical method," "Measurement instruments and reagents," "Preparation for analysis," "Conducting analysis," and "Processing measurement results." A relevant for the construction businesses selection of the rational procedure of quantitative chemical analysis based on the complex quality indicator (cost of the procedure) has been proposed. A justification was provided for the construction companies to use the procedures based on the argentometric and potentiometric methods, if the mass fraction of chloride ions in concrete is greater than or equal to 0.5 or 0.05%, respectively. The proposed approach to selecting a rational analytical procedure can be used in practice to optimize the process of studying characteristics of construction materials, including for the purpose of ensuring safety of buildings and structures. This paper reviews a solution for developing the ultimate monolithic displays for TV. The displays made with this solution can offer 2–3 times lower power consumption compared to OLED, high brightness and no burn‐in issue.
