Nowadays, wildlife is one of the most important sources of zoonoses, and it is a major concern for public health. Nevertheless, little is known about the role of wildlife as a reservoir and source of infectious diseases in the past. South America presents a wide diversity of wildlife. In the south of the continent, Argentina shelters a large diversity of neotropical carnivores. Although the paleoparasitological studies on carnivores have been increasing in southern Argentina, most of the efforts have been focused in a handful of sites located in western Patagonia. In this paper, two coprolites of felid found in Cueva Galpón, an initial late Holocene mortuary site from northeast Patagonia (Argentina), were studied for paleoparasitological purposes. Samples were processed by rehydration and homogenization, filtered and processed by spontaneous sedimentation. The samples were assigned to Puma concolor (puma) or Panthera onca (jaguar). Microscopic observations revealed that both coprolites were positive for parasite remains. High parasite richness was observed. Six nematodes, one cestode, and one coccidian morphotypes were reported. This is the first time that Gnathostoma sp. and Spirocerca sp. were recovered from holocenic times from Patagonia. This finding implies that some diseases such as taeniasis, spirocercosis, gnathostomosis, ascariasis, and coccidiosis could be present in holocenic wildlife from Patagonia prior to the Spanish colonization and domestic animal introduction. The overall results suggest that felids could have played a role as reservoirs and source of some parasitic species, some of which are zoonotic. This paper explores how significant are the ecological and climatic variables to influence the stable isotopes of guanacos. Lama guanicoe bone collagen carbon and nitrogen stable isotope ratios are assumed as a macro regional average value in west Argentina, mostly as a baseline to model archaeological human diet. If stable isotopes on mammals reflex ecology and climate, we need to know how those variables influence mammals bone stable isotope ratio. This paper analyses the 13C/12C and 15 N/14N ratio on bone collagen on 122 guanacos from Northwest Patagonia during the Holocene. The results confirm significant variation in both isotopes between Monte and Andean-Patagonian specimens. Guanacos from Monte shows higher δ13C and δ15N than those from Andean-Patagonian. Temporal trends indicate variation through Holocene but this variation is not spatially homogeneous. In this paper we suggest that Medieval Climatic Anomaly had stronger effect in Monte desert than in Patagonia desert, generating driest and/or hottest conditions between 1250 and 600 years BP. In order to understand the paleogeographic evolution of Viedma Lake (252 masl) sedimentary sequences with glaciolacustrine and lacustrine strata between 307 masl and 266 masl and bathymetric fluctuations between 27 ka. and 2.4 ka. were identified. The paleoenvironmental interpretation of the stratigraphic profiles was carried out based on the analysis of facies and their associations. The oldest age was recorded at 301 masl (27 ka) and the youngest corresponds to 266 masl (2.4 ka). The record of 27 ka was compared with another dated record of the Tar-San Martin Lakes basin showing that Viedma – Tar-San Martín Lakes were formed at similar ages. Taking into account that the deposits of Bahía Túnel are located at 266 masl and that the level of the lake would be above this height, it is proposed that this lake level would have restricted the movement of hunter-gatherer populations along the coast and to the west. From 2.4 ka on a new space started to be available for these populations broadening the wintering grounds (≤400 masl). The chronology of the archaeological record found in this new space fits the proposed paleogeographic evolution. This paper complements the research on the evolution of lacustrine systems in the Patagonian Mountain range and broadens the discussion of human mobility in the Viedma Lake basin during the Holocene. Tracksites representing early human occupation are rare in South America. However, they have been reported in association with mammal and bird tracks from two coastal sites in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina. Both sites are reported in separate papers in this volume. In this paper, the analysis of a radiocarbon database of the North Coast of Santa Cruz (central Patagonia, Argentina), is presented. Dated archaeological samples were obtained from 56 different types of archaeological sites (open-air -residential sites and burials-, and also rock shelters). The objective of this paper is assessing the continuities and discontinuities in the chronological signal of the area and identifying tendencies along the Holocene. The database currently contains 75 radiocarbon dates falling between ca. 8000 and 300 BP. The radiocarbon data base provides information on the chronological, spatial and contextual variability of the archaeological record of North Coast of Santa Cruz. By means of different analysis of sum of probabilities, we present three different chronological moments of human use of the coast and intermediate zone can be identified. A first moment is represented by early evidence of settlement during Middle Holocene. A second moment corresponds to a hiatus between ca. 5800 and ca. 3900 BP without archaeological evidence. Finally, a third moment is where an increasing of chronological signal occurred, related to greater artifactual variability and an increase in the intensity of human settlement in the Patagonian region. The causes that could have influenced in the discontinuity of the chronological signal of the study area, and the characteristics of the different moments identified are discussed. Glacial geologic studies in the Southern Hemisphere (SH) mid-latitudes (40-54°S) indicate renewed glacial activity in southern South America (Patagonia) and New Zealand's (NZ) South Island starting at ∼7 kyr, the so-called neoglaciation. Available data indicate that neoglacial advances in these regions occurred during a rising trend in atmospheric CO and CH concentrations, lower-than-present but increasing summer insolation and seasonality contrasts. In this paper we examine the climatological context in which neoglaciations occurred through analysis of the complete Paleoclimate Modelling Inter-comparison Project (PMIP2) database of simulations at 6 kyr for the SH. We observe that the amplitude of the annual insolation cycle in the SH did not change significantly at 6 kyr compared to the pre-industrial values, the largest difference occurring in autumn (MAM, negative anomalies) and spring (SON, positive anomalies). The simulated changes in temperatures over the SH respond to the insolation changes, with a 1-2 month delay over the oceans. This results in a reduced amplitude of the annual cycle of temperature and precipitation over most continental regions, except over Patagonia and NZ, that show a slight increase. In contrast, large-scale circulation features, such as the low and upper level winds and the subtropical anticyclones show an amplified annual cycle, as a direct response to the increased/decreased insolation during the transitional seasons SON/MAM. In the annual mean, there is a small but consistent equatorward shift of the latitude of maximum wind speed of 1-3° over the entire SH, which results in a small increase of wind speed over the South Pacific and Atlantic Oceans north of ∼50°S and a widespread decline south of 50°S. PMIP2 simulations for 6 kyr, indicate that in the annual mean, the SH mid-latitudes were colder, wetter and with stronger winds north of about 50°S. These conditions are consistent with the observed neoglacial advances in the region, as well as with terrestrial paleoclimate records from Patagonia that indicate cooling and a multi-millennial rising trend in Southern Westerly Wind intensity starting at ∼7.8 kyr. Patagonia features the most extensive glaciers of the Southern Hemisphere, excluding Antarctica, and a vast inventory of glacial landforms, so it is thought to have played a key role in (paleo)glacier studies since the late 19th century. However, no systematic attempts to characterize the specific research trends and the scientific community focused on Patagonian cryosphere have been conducted so far. To fill this gap, we analyzed the metadata associated to 305 articles compiled from the Web of Science database following a bibliometric approach covering the period between 1976 and 2020. Our results point to an irregular but net increase on the number of contributions on Patagonian (paleo)glaciers. Mass balance analyses based on satellite data of present-day glaciers and the reconstruction of past glacier activity by dating glacial landforms formed during the Last Glacial Termination, were the most addressed topics during the analyzed period. Patagonian (paleo)glacier studies are mostly published in generic Earth Sciences publications, followed by Quaternary and glaciological journals. Most of the studies were led by scientists from the United Kingdom, followed by Chile, Argentina and United States. In terms of collaborations, these studies can be divided into two main clusters, one composed by researchers from United States, Chile and Argentina institutions, and another mostly composed by British researchers. So far, the most prolific authors are nearly equally distributed in nationality, yet gender inclusion and international collaborations are still caveats that must be solved. Even though our query on the Web of Science missed highly influential (so-called) grey literature, such as local scientific journals and technical reports, the reviewed scientific literature unambiguously indicates that Patagonia is a privileged location for (paleo)glaciers studies worldwide and that it will continue offering vast opportunities to tackle critical questions related to global cryosphere and past-to-present climate changes. • Patagonia is a privilege site for studying present and past glacier dynamics and the evolution of climate changes at hemispheric and global scale. • Glacier dynamics during the 20th century and and the Last Glacial Termination are the most common topics addressed in past decades in the WOS. • Patagonian (paleo)glacier studies has contributed to the development or improvement of diverse analytical techniques. • United Kingdom, United States, Chile and Argentina produced the largest number of WOS-listed papers on (paleo)glaciers in past decades. • The related scientific community is fairly heterogeneous. Gastropods and ostracods are widely used in Quaternary paleoenvironmental reconstructions but the taphonomic studies that should precede them are not as common. In this paper we compare the taphonomic information obtained from assemblages recovered in Holocene fluvial sequences of the Salado River basin (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and analyze the changes or similarities between species, localities and stratigraphic units. Using taphonomic grades, gastropod shells were cataloged based on three attributes: fragmentation, discoloration and dissolution. For ostracods, discoloration and dissolution together with the population structure (adults-juveniles A/J, valves-carapace V/C and male-female ratios) were analyzed. For gastropods, Heleobia parchappii , Biomphalaria peregrina and Succinea meridionalis showed similar preservation patterns, and Miradiscops brasiliensis showed least evidence of alteration. In ostracods, these patterns varied among species. For V/C ratio, 7% of assemblages were formed only by valves, 82% were dominated by valves and 11% were dominated by carapaces. Fragmentation and population structure allowed autochthonous and allochthonous associations to be distinguished. Gastropod assemblages with low levels of fragmentation were recovered mainly from the uppermost levels of the stratigraphic profiles. For ostracods, the A/J ratio showed that 52% of the assemblages were dominated by adults with most ontogenetic stages represented and 29% retained their original population structure suggesting they would be autochthonous associations, whereas 19% of the assemblages were dominated by juvenile valves therefore assuming allochthonous associations. The objective of the present paper is to recognize and reconstruct, from the analysis of pollen recovered from sedimentary cores, the predominant plant communities and their variations during the Holocene in Corrientes Argentina, in order to infer changes in climatic conditions, vegetation and paleoenvironmental evolution in the northeast of Argentina. For this study, lakes located in the central region of Corrientes province were selected, comprising part of the western margin of the Iberá Wetland. The palynological analysis of the paleocommunities shows, in a first stage of the mid Holocene, the predominance of marsh grasslands and hygrophilous communities that indicates humid to sub‐humid environmental conditions. In a later stage of the mid Holocene, the paleocommunities show a characteristic association of wetlands, which together with the presence of Typha sp., would indicate sub‐humid to humid conditions and waterlogged or flooded soils with slow‐moving water. For the late Holocene, the paleocommunities show, initially, the presence of a grass‐dominated herbaceous steppe, indicating environmental disturbances, which in the fossil record could reflect the combination of intense wind action under a dry climate. In a later stage, the frequency and variety of species characteristic of humid environments increase, dominated by marshy‐herbaceous species, in addition to the development of the hygrophilous forest. Consequently, since the mid Holocene, the main climate factors responsible for the observed changes in wetland conditions were the location and intensity of the Atlantic and Pacific anticyclones in addition to changes in sea level. Tafí valley is an elongated tectonic basin of about 450 km2 located in NW Argentina in a mountainous frame of metamorphic and granitic Precambrian-Paleozoic rocks belonging to Sierras Pampeanas. This study presents the first detailed geomorphological map of the area. The most representative landforms date to the Lateglacial-Holocene, with four differentiating aggradative units separated by incision phases. Among these phases, it is possible to identify the units H1 (Lateglacial-Early and Middle Holocene) and H2 (Upper Holocene until ca. 600 cal BP). These units are composed of slopes, fluvial terraces, and alluvial fans, forming a coupled system. In some areas, this system is complemented with fluvioglacial and glacial landforms. Aim We sought to determine if the present fragmentary distribution of the giant columnar cactus Echinopsis terscheckii in tropical drylands is a relict of a previously more widespread range during cold and dry phases of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Location Tropical and subtropical dry ecotonal areas of northern and central Andes of Argentina. Methods We combined ecological niche models (ENM) with molecular polymorphisms of isozymes and DNA sequences. We collected samples from 30 individuals at 24 locations for genetic analysis covering a wide range of environmental conditions. We sequenced the nuclear ITS and three non-coding regions of the chloroplast DNA and we resolved 15 isozyme loci. Potential distribution was modelled using 88 E. terscheckii presence training records and a reduced set of 10 modern bioclimatic variables. LGM and the Mid-Holocene distributions were derived by projecting bioclimatic data under present to past environmental conditions according to CCSM4 and MIROC-ESM Global Climate Models. Results We detected high isozyme diversity towards the south. The multivariate cluster analysis yielded two groups of populations that were geographically concordant with the DNA haplotypes located north and south of a divide at 27°S. Distribution models show range expansion during the LGM in two north and south areas separated by a gap of low suitability at 27°S. Suitable areas in the south were close to current populations, while in the north, populations survived in more disjunct locations that probably suffered from founder effects. In contrast, Mid-Holocene bioclimatic conditions were relatively unsuitable in the south. Main conclusions Our results suggest that the divergence of north and south groups of E. terscheckii populations reflect long-lasting persistence through climatic cycles that were reinforced by the presence of an orogenic divide at mid-latitudes. Latitudinally divergent groups of populations should be treated as distinct evolutionary significant units that deserve independent conservation actions. Increased genetic diversity and inbreeding towards the south may guide setting up priorities for the long-term protection of a dominant element of drylands as E. terscheckii. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Most research on bivalves from the south-western Atlantic used morphological (shell) characters for taxonomic discriminations. Dominant Veneroids from Argentinian Quaternary coastal deposits exhibit wide morphological variation – often making objective discriminations difficult/impossible, which could be objectively described and compared through geometric morphometrics techniques. This work focuses on comparison of geometric morphometrics methods applied to fossil and modern shells, to assess inter- and intra-generic variations. Three approaches were considered: landmarks (L), semi-landmarks (SL) and outlines. Shell shape analyses for different time spans (Pleistocene, fossil Holocene and modern) and areas (Patagonia and Bonaerensian) showed that Elliptic Fourier analysis (EFA), Landmarks and Landmarks plus Semilandmarks (L+SL) can discriminate at generic levels:Mactra, Mulinia(Mactridae) vs.Pitar, Protothaca, Eurhomalea, Clausinella(Veneridae). L and L+SL are powerful for inter/intraspecific distinctions ofMactra. Variability ofMactra isabelleanaincludes the remaining nominal ‘species’ (transitional morphs). Causal environmental factors of (phenotype) variation could be addressed for modern environments (substrate, salinity and energy). Subtrigonal-inflated shells predominate in muddy, quieter, shallow mixo-polyhaline waters; ovate-elongate-compressed in sandy, poly-euhaline, deeper habitats. Differential spatial distribution (and abundance) across time responds to Late Quaternary high sea-level stands: transgressive maxima allowed higher salinity in marginal-marine areas and optimal conditions forMactra isabelleanacontrasting with scarcer records in the Mar Argentino today. The aim of this work is to study, from a bioarchaeological perspective, the diet and oral health of the populations that inhabited Central Argentina in two periods which would reflect changes in subsistence strategies: earlier late Holocene (ca. 2500-1500 years BP) and later late Holocene (ca.1500-400 years BP). The sample is composed by 83 adult individuals from 47 archaeological sites. We considered five non-specific indicators of stress, infectious and degenerative diseases: hypoplasia of dental enamel, dental caries, abscesses, antemortem teeth loss, and calculus. We also considered hypercementosis, dens in dens, and agenesis. We test intraobserver error by means of intraclass correlation coefficient and analysis of variance of repeated measures. We calculated prevalence by sex, age, geographic subregion, and chronological period. We applied Chi-square (X2) to test statistical significance of observed differences. Considering the sample as a whole, low prevalence of dental caries (10.27%), abscesses (16.52%), and hypoplasia (10.84%) are coincident with values observed for populations with mixed or hunter-gathering subsistence strategy. In later late Holocene, high incidence of caries should be considered as indicator of consumption of C4 vegetables or other carbohydrate-rich vegetables, such as legumes of Prosopis sp. Also, moderate values of dental enamel hypoplasia should be related with metabolic-systemic stress episodes. Summarizing, these results are coincident with isotopic, archaeological, and ethnohistorical evidences which suggest climatic, social, and demographic pressures that might have affected the lifestyle of these populations before the Spanish conquest. The isotopic fingerprint of terrestrial gastropods has been increasingly used as a credible natural paleoenvironmental archive. Most published work has used this proxy at tropical and temperate latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere, and focused on entire-shell analysis. The present study provides entire-shell and intra-shell isotopic profiles to infer average and seasonal late Holocene environmental conditions in central Argentina (30°S). Shells of Plagiodontes daedaleus (Gastropoda: Odontostomidae) were retrieved from the Alero Deodoro Roca–Sector B site, one of the few archaeological sites in central Argentina rich in shells collected by pre-Hispanic hunter-gatherer groups. Ancient entire shells exhibited values that were ~2.5‰ higher in δ13C and ~1.8‰ higher in δ18O than modern individuals, pointing to higher abundance of C4 plants and overall drier conditions (lower relative humidity and/or higher rain δ18O) during 4.5–1.7 cal. kyr BP than today, in agreement with published regional proxies. Intra-shell isotopic profiles suggest that modern and fossil specimens deposited their shells throughout two-to-three summer/winter cycles. Intra-shell δ18O values varied ~5‰, matching with the seasonal variation of rain δ18O values. The extent of seasonality was similar during 4.5–1.7 cal. kyr BP and today. Intra-shell δ13C values varied ~2–3‰ and did not portray distinct seasonal cycles, depicting minimal seasonal variations in the snail diet. The southern fringes of the South American landmass provide a rare opportunity to examine the development of moorland vegetation with sparse tree cover in a wet, cool temperate climate of the Southern Hemisphere. We present a record of changes in vegetation over the past 17,000 years, from a lake in extreme southern Chile (Isla Santa Inés, Magallanes region, 53°38.97S; 72°25.24W), where human influence on vegetation is negligible. The western archipelago of Tierra del Fuego remained treeless for most of the Lateglacial period; Lycopodium magellanicum, Gunnera magellanica and heath species dominated the vegetation. Nothofagus may have survived the last glacial maximum at the eastern edge of the Magellan glaciers from where it spread southwestwards and established in the region at around 10,500 cal. yr BP. Nothofagus antarctica was likely the earlier colonizing tree in the western islands, followed shortly after by Nothofagus betuloides. At 9000 cal. yr BP moorland communities expanded at the expense of Nothofagus woodland. Simultaneously, Nothofagus species shifted to dominance of the evergreen Nothofagus betuloides and the Magellanic rain forest established in the region. Rapid and drastic vegetation changes occurred at 5200 cal. yr BP, after the Mt Burney MB2 eruption, including the expansion and establishment of Pilgerodendron uviferum and the development of mixed Nothofagus-Pilgerodendron-Drimys woodland. Scattered populations of Nothofagus, as they occur today in westernmost Tierra del Fuego may be a good analogue for Nothofagus populations during the Lateglacial in eastern sites. In Northern Patagonia, the long-term vegetation–climate relationships that gave shape to southern South American forests have been the subject of extensive investigations in the Andean regions of Argentina and Chile for about a century. The Río Manso Superior originates in one of the tongues of the Cerro Tronador Glacier, near the international border, discharging into the Pacific Ocean after feeding present Lago Mascardi and flowing east to west on a mountain landscape. Ongoing pollen studies in this watershed provide us with a modern analogue to better understand the vegetation history of the region. A pollen record from a 15 m long sediment core retrieved from Lago Mascardi (41°08°S, 71°34°W) contains continuous evidence of vegetation changes in the Río Manso watershed extending back to the last deglaciation. High Andean steppe vegetation with forest patches, and extended waterlogged areas gave place to a forest, probably deciduous, during the Lateglacial–Holocene transition. A forest diversification took place during the climate amelioration that encompassed the deglaciation whilst the vegetation became more open before the onset of the Huelmo-Mascardi cold reversal. A mixed Nothofagus-Austrocedrus forest expanded during the middle Holocene. This forest became denser under the higher climate variability registered in the region during the late Holocene as shown by independent published data. Statistical analyses of modern pollen samples along an altitudinal transect from low Nothofagus forest and shrubland to high Andean semi-desert support this interpretation. Gualas Glacier is an outlet glacier of the Northern Patagonian Icefield, one of the largest temperate ice bodies on Earth. Golfo Elefantes, the depositional basin of Gualas Glacier, has a sedimentary record that spans, with some hiatuses, at least the last ~11.3±3.0 ka. During this period the gulf remained free of ice, as suggested by the absence of proximal glacimarine sediment and till in the sedimentary section. This implies that the arcuate terminal moraines that occur along the edges of Golfo Elefantes were formed during the waning stages of the local glacial maxima (Late Pleistocene) or the early Holocene. Between ~11.3±3.0 ka and ~4.2±0.3–1.4 ka, the basin received low sediment input consisting of fine-grained sediments in the form of low concentration density currents that filled bathymetric lows. Sediment discharge increased several times in the late Holocene (~<1.4 ka) and started with the accumulation of ~ 0.5 km3 of sandy sediments in a relatively short time span (~670 yr). This high discharge of sandy sediments is interpreted as being the result of glacial reworking of sediments stored in Gualas Glacier proglacial lake and thus implies that the glacier advanced at ~1.4–0.8 ka. The overall increase in sediment discharge in the late Holocene indicates a sharp increase in centennial timescale precipitation, which in turn suggests an increase in the intensity of the westerly winds in the area. Two recent periods of interannual sedimentation variability were identified at ~ad 1160–1460 and ~ad 1680–1890 and correlate with documented regional glacier advances. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Glacial geologic evidence and radiocarbon-dated glacial deposits provide evidence of glacier fluctuations during the last 5 ka years in the Andes. Radiocarbon-dated moraines, morphological and stratigraphical studies permit the reconstruction of glacier fluctuations during the Holocene in the Valenzuela area of the Mendoza Andes valley located at 35°S, in the upper Río Grande basin. The Holocene record in this part of the Andes is mostly unknown, so this research is relevant for palaeoclimatic reconstructions in South America. In the Río Valenzuela, glacier variations were dated in the El Azufre and El Peñón valleys. The first Neoglacial advance occurred at c. 5700 yr BP and a very close re-advance of similar magnitude occurred at 4700–4300 yr BP which formed well-preserved lateral-terminal moraines. The first Neoglacial advance occurred in the El Peñón valley at c. 4400 yr BP and a well-preserved terminal moraine is observed. A second Neoglacial advance reached its maxima at c. 2500–2200 yr BP in the El Azufre and El Peñón glaciers. A third, corresponding to the 'Little Ice Age', culminated at c. 400 yr BP (c. AD 1451–1641 cal. yr) and 350±60 yr BP (c. AD 1460–1644 cal. yr) in the El Azufre valley. The third Neoglacial advance is distinguished in the El Peñón valley based on morphological characteristics, colour, freshness of the glacial deposits and the proximity to the active glacier. It is indicated by the Amarilla I, II, III lateral moraines. An estimation of the magnitude of snowline depression is obtained comparing the altitude of the present snowline with that of the reconstructed snow line for the first Neoglacial and 'Little Ice Age' advances. A representative section of the Holocene alluvial record of the southern Pampas (Argentina) comprises a sequence of clastic sediments, a diatomite and two palaeosols. Detailed macro- and micromorphological descriptions provide the basis for the reconstruction of its pedosedimentary history. Combining the pedosedimentary reconstruction with palaeoecological data allows a detailed overview of alluvial landscape development and associated palaeoenvironmental change in the region during the Holocene. The early-Holocene shift from a subhumid dry to humid climate was marked initially by a diminution in clastic sedimentation, the development of the Puesto Callejón Viejo Soil and then re-establishment of fluvial aggradation with a dominance of bioclastic sedimentation. Loess inputs increased during the mid-Holocene as the climate reverted to subhumid dry, and temporary subaerial exposure of the sediments led to the formation of the Puesto Berrondo Soil. More variable environmental conditions followed with natural fluvial aggradation ceasing in the late Holocene, though aeolian sedimentation has continued until the present day. The resultant surface accretionary soil has been modified by recent alluvial inputs from flood events linked to agricultural disturbance in adjacent catchments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
