Currently, the inversion of remote sensing satellite images of water environment indicators mostly stays in the indicators with active optical characteristics, while there is less research on the inversion of most water quality indicators with non-optical activity properties, weak scattering and absorption of optical radiation, the size of their concentration has little effect on the spectral characteristics of the water body, such as TOC(Total Organic Carbon). In this paper, based on Pingzhai Reservoir, a dammed river in the karst mountainous area, the inversion model of TOC concentration was established based on BP neural network (BPNN) and sentinel-2 satellite remote sensing images. The results showed that the single bands with high correlation with the measured TOC concentration data were two vegetation red-edge bands B6 (740 nm) and B7 (783 nm) and one NIR band B8 (842 nm), and finally b7, b6 + b7, b7 + b8, b7 ×b8 were selected as the input layers of BPNN for modeling through the combination of the bands, and their Pearson's coefficients were -0.667, -0.656, -0.655, - 0.675. The inverse model established could reach a minimum RMSE of 0.235 mg/L and a maximum R2 of 0.889, which was superior to that of the conventional empirical model. Demonstrate the feasibility of a TOC inversion method based on Sentinel-2 data and BPNN to monitor TOC concentrations in Pingzhai Reservoir. The study successfully established a BP neural network inversion model of TOC concentration in Pingzhai Reservoir with low error, meanwhile, we analyzed the correlation between common water quality indicators and TOC in the reservoir, in which TOC showed significant positive correlation with WT and significant negative correlation with TN and EC, with Pearson's coefficients of 0.655, -0.666, and -0.393, respectively. This paper explores the development of pottery technology in the Trieste Karst region (North-East Italy) from the Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age (EBA). It also seeks to identify cultural links with other areas by examining potentially imported vessels. Archaeometric analyses (X-ray diffraction and optical microscopy) reveal significant differences between Neolithic ceramics (Danilo–Vlaška Group) and the majority of Late Copper Age (LCA)/Early Bronze Age (EBA) pottery (primarily associated with the Ljubljana Culture and a few with the Cetina Culture). Neolithic pottery displays consistent characteristics across all vessel types, including coarse grain, prevalent sparry calcite temper, and the absence of grog. In contrast, most LCA and EBA vessels exhibit distinct features such as very fine-grained paste, no sparry calcite, notable use of grog temper, higher quartz, muscovite, and flint content. Notably, from a technological perspective, the analyzed Cetina vessels bear a strong resemblance to the majority of LCA ceramics. The differences between Neolithic and LCA/EBA vessels clearly suggest the use of new raw materials, recipes, and techniques, likely reflecting changes in cultural and social contexts and potential connections with the core area of the Ljubljana Culture. Dynamic features from remote sensing photos may be successfully extracted using deep learning and symmetric network structure, which can then be used to direct them to carry out accurate classification. The DBN model can more effectively extract features from photos since it uses unsupervised learning. It can be reduced to the many symmetric Restricted Boltmann Machines (RBM) training problem. In this paper, a soil rocky desertification (RD) assessment model based on a deep belief network (DBN) is created in light of the complicated influencing aspects of Karst RD risk assessment encompassing several geographical elements. The model builds upon the conventional RBM framework and incorporates the influence layer of related elements as an auxiliary requirement for retrieving Geographic Information System (GIS) score data. Then, in order to forecast the level of soil rocky desertification, it learns the features of many elements. The experimental results show that the proposed model proposed in this paper has better prediction performance and faster convergence speed, and its classification results for different degrees of RD are more consistent with the actual risk assessment results. Remote sensing image with high spatial and temporal resolution is very important for rational planning and scientific management of land resources. However, due to the influence of satellite resolution, revisit period, and cloud pollution, it is difficult to obtain high spatial and temporal resolution images. In order to effectively solve the "space–time contradiction" problem in remote sensing application, based on GF-2PMS (GF-2) and PlanetSope (PS) data, this paper compares and analyzes the applicability of FSDAF (flexible spatiotemporal data fusion), STDFA (the spatial temporal data fusion approach), and Fit_FC (regression model fitting, spatial filtering, and residual compensation) in different terrain conditions in karst area. The results show the following. (1) For the boundary area of water and land, the FSDAF model has the best fusion effect in land boundary recognition, and provides rich ground object information. The Fit_FC model is less effective, and the image is blurry. (2) For areas such as mountains, with large changes in vegetation coverage, the spatial resolution of the images fused by the three models is significantly improved. Among them, the STDFA model has the clearest and richest spatial structure information. The fused image of the Fit_FC model has the highest similarity with the verification image, which can better restore the coverage changes of crops and other vegetation, but the actual spatial resolution of the fused image is relatively poor, the image quality is fuzzy, and the land boundary area cannot be clearly identified. (3) For areas with dense buildings, such as cities, the fusion image of the FSDAF and STDFA models is clearer and the Fit_FC model can better reflect the changes in land use. In summary, compared with the Fit_FC model, the FSDAF model and the STDFA model have higher image prediction accuracy, especially in the recognition of building contours and other surface features, but they are not suitable for the dynamic monitoring of vegetation such as crops. At the same time, the image resolution of the Fit_FC model after fusion is slightly lower than that of the other two models. In particular, in the water–land boundary area, the fusion accuracy is poor, but the model of Fit_FC has unique advantages in vegetation dynamic monitoring. In this paper, three spatiotemporal fusion models are used to fuse GF-2 and PS images, which improves the recognition accuracy of surface objects and provides a new idea for fine classification of land use in karst areas. The special above-ground and underground dual structure in the karst area makes the capacity of surface water storage in this area poor. In water-limited ecosystems, soil moisture is the key to the survival of plants. Influenced by rainfall and soil texture, soil moisture variation characteristics of different vegetation types are different in slope land. Many researchers use rainfall simulation experiments to study the influence of soil water movement processes under rainfall patterns, but there are few studies under natural conditions. In this paper, wood trees, peach trees, flue-cured tobacco, and grassland were planted at the buffer zone boundary of Shibing, a World Heritage site, along different elevations in the depression of the research site. Peach trees and flue-cured tobacco were the main cash crops in the area. The soil layers of 0–0.15 m, 0.15–0.30 m, 0.30–0.45 m, 0.45–0.60 m, and 0.60–0.75 m were taken as research objects. Rainfall and soil moisture were monitored every ten minutes to study the variation of soil moisture of vegetation types under different rainfall patterns. Through the analysis of soil physicochemical properties and vegetation types, it was found that soil moisture changes were different in different land types. In general, shallow soil moisture (0~0.30 m) was more active in the wet season (CV > 10%) but tended to be stable in the dry season. The rainy season rainfall had the greatest influence on soil moisture change. The response level of soil moisture to rainfall of all vegetation types was grassland > peach trees > flue-cured tobacco. These results can provide ecological and economic suggestions for karst areas with large population distribution in China, so as to reduce the impact of rock desertification on this area. Crystal blockage of tunnel drainage pipes is one of the main causes of problems such as lining cracking and water leakage. The study of the crystal development rule is of great significance for the design of tunnel drainage systems and the long-term safety of tunnel support structures. In this paper, a series of experimental studies on the crystallization development law of drain pipes are conducted. The effects of the connection method of the drain, the diameter of the pipe, the spacing of the circular drain, and the material of the drain on the crystallization development pattern are investigated. The results show that the groundwater environment has a great influence on the crystallization development of the drain pipe. As the drain diameter and the spacing between two adjacent circular drains increased, the time for complete blockage of the drain is prolonged. The rate of crystallization on the drainage pipe can be effectively reduced by changing the material of the drainage pipe from polyamide (PA) to polypropylene (PP). Vegetation degeneration has become a serious ecological problem for karst regions in the Anthropocene. According to the deficiency of long serial and high-resolution analysis of karst vegetation, this paper reconstructed the variation of vegetation landscape changes from 1987 to 2020 in a typical karst region of China. Using Landsat time series data, the dynamic changes and driving factors of natural karst vegetation were identified at the landscape scale. On the premise of considering the time-lag effect, the main climatic factors that influence vegetation growth were presented at the interannual timescale. Then, the approach of residual analysis was adopted to distinguish the dominant factors affecting vegetation growth. Results of trend analysis revealed that 21.5% of the forestland showed an overall significant decline in vegetation growth, while only 1.5% showed an increase in vegetation growth during the study period. Precipitation and radiation were the dominant meteorological factors influencing vegetation at the interannual timescale, as opposed to temperature. More than 70% of the natural vegetation growth was dominated by climatic factors. The area percentage of negative human impact has increased gradually since 2009 and reached 18.5% in 2020, indicating the currently serious situation of vegetation protection; fortunately, in recent years, human disturbances on vegetation have been mitigated in karst areas with the promotion of ecological conservation and restoration projects. As the largest contiguous karst area in China, the southwestern karst area is a typical ecologically fragile area affecting local vegetation dynamics. Ecosystem water use efficiency (WUE) is an important factor reflecting the ability of vegetation to produce organic matter with a limited water supply. Therefore, determining the WUE variation trends in this ecologically fragile region is important. In this paper, we used MODIS remote sensing datasets, meteorological data, and land cover data to analyze the spatiotemporal changes in vegetation water use efficiency in the southwestern karst region from 2001 to 2017. We also further quantitatively analyzed the effects of climate change and human activities on the spatial and temporal patterns of vegetation WUE in the study area. The main conclusions were as follows. (1) From 2001 to 2017, in terms of temporal characteristics, the interannual variation in WUE fluctuated greatly, ranging from 1.33 to 1.51 g C kg−1 H2O, with a multiyear average of 1.43 g C kg−1 H2O and an average rate of change of − 0.0046 g C kg−1 H2O year−1. In terms of spatial characteristics, areas with a higher WUE were concentrated in central Sichuan and northeastern Yunnan. (2) The annual average WUE of each vegetation type decreased in the following order: evergreen coniferous forest > evergreen broad-leaved forest > mixed forest > deciduous broad-leaved forest > cultivated land > deciduous coniferous forest > grassland > cultivated land and natural vegetation > shrub forest. (3) The vegetation WUE of 70.66% in this area was positively correlated with temperature. Additionally, 79.68% of the vegetation WUE was negatively correlated with precipitation. The relative contribution rates of climate change and human activities to the change trend in WUE were 15% and 85%, respectively. Compared with WUE results in other studies, the WUE of different karst landform areas obtained in this study was quite different, indicating that the geological and landform features of the karst area are complex. Our study provides scientific support for local vegetation restoration and protection policies and promotes the understanding of the principle of the carbon–water cycle in karst areas. The paper analyses complex hydrological behaviour of Skradinski Buk, the tufa waterfall, formed on the downstream part of the Krka River located in the coastal part of the Croatian Dinaric karst. This waterfall is the central point of the Krka National Park (KNP) proclaimed in 1985. Skradinski Buk is the seventh, final and the largest tufa barrier on the Krka River. Morphology of Skradinski Buk is composed of 17 unevenly distributed steps and dozens of small depressions. Natural waterfall morphology strongly influenced the complex waterfall hydrological regime. Additionally, hydrological regime is disturbed by the operation of the hydroelectric power plant (HEPP) Jaruga. This paper analyses characteristic (minimum, mean, maximum) annual water levels and discharges monitored at two hydrological stations (Skradinski Buk Gornji-SBG and Nacionalni Park-NP). SBG controls the inflow of water into the waterfall, while the NP is established in order to control the use of water from the HEPP Jaruga operation. It is concluded that the HEPP Jaruga does not comply with the agreement signed between the KNP and the HEPP Jaruga. The goal of the paper is to give detailed hydrological analysis of the Skradinski Buk, which should play the crucial role in the protection of this wonderful and very vulnerable phenomenon. In the second half of the 19th and early 20th century, sheep shepherds have built dry-stone shelters all over the Slovene Kras (or Karst) region. Despite being made out of stones that are interlocked without the use of any binding material, many of these vernacular constructions survived – even though sometimes only partially – the ravages of time. The fact that over one hundred fifty shepherd shelters are currently known is mainly due to the craftsmanship of their builders and thanks to (and even despite) their present location. A majority of these stone constructions can be found in areas that are nowadays forested, thus shielding them from weather-related or anthropogenic damage (because they are difficult to spot). This paper reports on the geometric documentation of those shelters using a photogrammetric computer vision pipeline, thereby mainly focussing on the difficulties that were encountered during this process. However, such image-based modelling approaches merely yield digital three-dimensional (3D) approximations of the shelters' surface geometry (along with some sub-optimal colour data). Although these 3D surface models might be suitable to digitally preserve vulnerable vernacular buildings to some extent, they do not magically advance our understanding of them. The second part of this article focuses, therefore, on the extraction of archaeological information from these digital 3D constructions. More specifically, the total amount of stones, the total building time and the building cost regarding caloric energy expenditure are estimated for each of the digitised shelters. Although this assessment of architectural energetics provided useful insight into the building efforts and nutrient uptake of the shepherds, it also revealed many assumptions and shortcomings that often characterise archaeological information extraction from digital 3D models of buildings. This paper focuses on the Kras/Carso Food Tour to present the challenges of developing a luxury tourism product. The tour's design followed the current strategy of the Slovenian Tourist Board, which defines specific criteria for a luxury experience. Contextualized by the experiential trends in tourism, the paper juxtaposes the bottom-up and top-down perspectives on luxury experiences. The authors argue that mediation by experts familiar with academic discourses and local culture is beneficial for the development of a successful tourism product. The study contributes to the debates on luxury tourism, which have neglected bottom-up perceptions in tourist discourse and overlooked the dilemmas people face when »luxurifying« their traditions and heritage practices. This paper gives a comprehensive explanation of the hydrogeological and hydrological characteristics of different water occurrence, which exists in the extremely complex Dinaric karst system. The area and boundaries of the Dinaric karst have never been precisely determined. It covers about 60,000 km stretching the length of the eastern coast of the Adriatic Sea, from the Bay of Trieste in the north, to the Drim River basin in the south, and the Western Morava River valley in the east. Due to very high infiltration rates, overland and surface flows are rare in comparison with non-karst terrains. The Dinaric karst is an extremely heterogeneous medium which can be explained only by the use of a great number of measurements points and by continuously monitoring and measuring different parameters. The hydrogeological and hydrological regime of all water phenomena in the Dinaric karst depends mostly upon the interaction between groundwater and surface water. The dominant flow of the groundwater contained in the Dinaric karst is towards the Adriatic Sea through rivers and many permanent and intermittent coastal and submarine springs. The paper presents many examples of karst water phenomena from the Dinaric karst: (1) springs (Jadro, Ombla and Crnojevića Springs); (2) open streamflows (Ljubljanica, Pazinčica, Dobra, Lika, Gacka, Krka, Zrmanja and Cetina Rivers); (3) lakes and wetlands (Cerknica, Vrana, Plitvice, Vransko, Red and Blue Lakes); and (4) coastal and island karst (Brač Island). The karst plateau is dominated by mountainous and hilly landforms, with low mechanization level of cropland, high difficulty of cultivation, and obvious phenomenon of cropland abandonment, which threatens regional food security. This study aims to analyze the spatial-temporal variation and its driving mechanisms of abandoned cropland in the Karst Plateau in Eastern Yunnan, China (KPEYC) between 2001 and 2020. To achieve this goal, 18 key factors from population, economic environment, cropland attributes, and farming conditions are selected. Moreover, correlation analysis, geodetector, and regression analysis methods are applied from three perspectives: temporal change, spatial distribution and spatial-temporal change. The results show that: (i) The cropland abandonment rate (CAR) in the KPEYC shows a fluctuating trend, with an average value of 9.78%, and the spatial distribution shows a pattern of "high in the center and low in the south and north". (ii) From the perspective of temporal change, gross value of agricultural production, and gross value of industrial production have the largest correlation coefficients with CAR. (iii) The explanatory power of gross tertiary industrial production, gross value of industrial production, followed by soil thickness. (iv) Gross value of agricultural production, and gross tertiary industrial production are the core driving forces for the spatial-temporal change of CAR. The higher the gross value of agricultural production and gross tertiary industrial production, the lower the CAR. elevation, soil thickness, and traffic mileage are the main driving factors for the spatial-temporal change of CAR. The study indicates that economic factors are decisive for cropland abandonment in the KPEYC. Based on the results, this study can provide decision-making support for local prevention and control of cropland abandonment, and the local community needs to promote land transfer and concentration and local urbanization according to local conditions, improve agricultural policies, improve farming conditions, etc. in order to increase farmers' enthusiasm for production, promote the rational use of cropland, and solidly push forward ecological restoration and management, optimize ecological spatial patterns, manage serious areas of rocky desertification, and appropriately alleviate the contradiction between people and land. The contents of soil available phosphorus (AVP) and potassium (AVK) in karstic mountainous agricultural areas have changed rapidly in recent decades. This temporal variation displays strong spatial heterogeneity due to these areas' complex topography and anthropogenic activities. Socio-geographical factors can reflect the changes in the natural environment caused by human beings, and our objective is to enhance understanding of their role in explaining the changes of AVP and AVK. In a typical karst region (611.5 km2) with uniform soil parent material and low climatic variability, 255 topsoil samples (138 in 2012 and 117 in 2021) were collected to quantify the temporal AVP and AVK changes. Random forest (RF) and partial dependence plot analyses were conducted to investigate the responses of these changes to socio-geographical factors (distance from the nearest town center [DFT] and village density [VD]), topography, biology, and landscape pattern indexes. The mean values of AVP (48.25 mg kg−1) and AVK (357.67 mg kg−1) in 2021 were significantly (p < 0.01) higher than those in 2012 (28.84 mg kg−1 and 131.67 mg kg−1, respectively). Semi-variance analysis showed strong spatial autocorrelation for AVP and AVK, ranging from 7.29% to 10.95% and 13.31% to 10.33% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. Adding socio-geographical factors can greatly improve the explanatory power of RF modeling for AVP and AVK changes by 19% and 27%, respectively. DFT and VD emerged as the two most important variables affecting these changes, followed by elevation. These three variables all demonstrated clear nonlinear threshold effects on AVP and AVK changes. A strong accumulation of AVP and AVK was observed at DFT < 5 km and VD > 20. The AVP changes increased dramatically when the elevation ranged between 1298 m and 1390 m, while the AVK changes decreased rapidly when the elevation ranged between 1350 m and 1466 m. The interaction effects of DFT and VD with elevation on these changes were also demonstrated. Overall, this study examined the important role of socio-geographical factors and their nonlinear threshold and interaction effects on AVP and AVK changes. Regional ecosystem service value (ESV) is significantly influenced by factors such as land use/cover change (LUCC). In this study, from the perspective of spatio-temporal heterogeneity, we constructed a dynamic and zonal equivalence table of ecosystem service values using the equivalence factor method and analyzed the spatio-temporal changes in ecosystem service values of different agricultural plantation regions of the karst mountainous areas of southwestern China (Yunnan Province, YP) in the years from 1990 to 2020. Also, the ESV of YP in 2030 was simulated using the Patch-generating Land Use Simulation (PLUS) model. The results showed the following: (1) land use/land cover (LULC) in YP from 1990 to 2020 was dominated by needle-leaved forestland, broadleaved forestland, grassland, and rainfed cropland. (2) The total ESV in YP fluctuated between CNY 876.74 and 1323.68 B from 1990 to 2020, expanding at a rate of 50.98%. The largest portion of the total ESV comes from climate regulation. The ESV increased from east to west, and the positive spatial correlation of the ESV gradually weakened. (3) The ESV in YP was projected to reach CNY 1320.70 B by 2030, representing a decrease of ~CNY 2.98 B since 2020. The results showed a decline in the ecological environment's quality in YP. The very complex system of sinking, losing and underground transboundary Karst rivers, lakes and aquifers in the central part of the deep and bare Dinaric karst in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina is analysed. The groundwater and surface water are hydraulically connected through numerous karst forms which facilitate the exchange of water between the surface and subsurface. A complex underground conduit system is an inherent characteristic karst system analysed. Groundwater and surface water exchange with both adjacent and distant aquifers through underground routes or inflows from surface streams and artificial reservoirs. Because of a complex surface and underground karst features, which strongly influenced its hydrological and hydrogeological regime, the main open stream flow, with a longitude of about 106 km, undergoes eight name changes. In this paper, it is noted as 'the eight-name river'. In fact, it represents one river with losing, sinking and underground stream sections. Different surface and underground karst forms play crucial roles in the way the water flowing over the surface and on the underground sections of its catchment. The analysed area is full of varied and often spectacular surface landforms, including for example the Blue and Red Lakes and the Kravice Waterfall. The analyses made in the paper show the existence of a decreasing trend of mean annual discharges on the eight-name river, which can cause numerous problems in the regional water resource management of this transboundary river and catchment. The karst region in the central-south region of Shandong province of China is one of the typical half-drought temperate karst regions in north China. There are abundant karst water resources in this region, and are also the major water supply resource bases of the important cities of Shandong province, China. But some major features of karst water resource such as inhomogeneous distribution, large area dispersed recharge and local water concentration exist evidently in this region. These features determine that it is very significant to realize the rational exploitation and regulatory storage of karst water resource in this region. Based on the systematic investigation of the typical area of karst water resources in central-south region of Shandong province, China and the previous research findings, this paper completes a systematic research on the present situation of exploitation and utilization, influencing factor of scientific exploitation and rational storage problem of karst water resources in this region. The regional distribution features and pattern of karst water resources in this region are also analyzed. According to the basic research results, some major measures for rational regulatory reserve of karst water resources and ecology environment protection are put forwards in this paper. Landscape change is a dynamic feature of landscape structure and function over time which is usually affected by natural and human factors. The evolution of rocky desertification is a typical landscape change that directly affects ecological environment governance and sustainable development. Guizhou is one of the most typical subtropical karst landform areas in the world. Its special karst rocky desertification phenomenon is an important factor affecting the ecological environment and limiting sustainable development. In this paper, remote sensing imagery and machine learning methods are utilized to model and analyze the spatiotemporal variation of rocky desertification in Guizhou. Based on an improved CA-Markov model, rocky desertification scenarios in the next 30 years are predicted, providing data support for exploration of the evolution rule of rocky desertification in subtropical karst areas and for effective management. The specific results are as follows: (1) Based on the dynamic degree, transfer matrix, evolution intensity, and speed, the temporal and spatial evolution of rocky desertification in Guizhou from 2001 to 2020 was analyzed. It was found that the proportion of no rocky desertification (NRD) areas increased from 48.86% to 63.53% over this period. Potential rocky desertification (PRD), light rocky desertification (LRD), middle rocky desertification (MRD), and severe rocky desertification (SRD) continued to improve, with the improvement showing an accelerating trend after 2010. (2) An improved CA-Markov model was used to predict the future rocky desertification scenario; compared to the traditional CA-Markov model, the Lee–Sallee index increased from 0.681 to 0.723, and figure of merit (FOM) increased from 0.459 to 0.530. The conclusions of this paper are as follows: (1) From 2001 to 2020, the evolution speed of PRD was the fastest, while that of SRD was the slowest. Rocky desertification control should not only focus on areas with serious rocky desertification, but also prevent transformation from NRD to PRD. The karst strata in the southwestern mountainous areas of China are extensively developed, creating a fragile geological environment. Landslide geological disasters occur frequently in these areas due to high annual rainfall, concentrated time periods, and frequent human engineering activities. Conventional ground geophysical methods face challenges in complex terrains, making it difficult to quickly and reliably obtain underground structures in landslide-prone areas. The semi-airborne transient electromagnetic method (SATEM) combines ground-based transmission and airborne reception of electromagnetic responses. This method, characterized by large emission magnetic moment and rapid data collection in the air, offers advantages in detecting deep geological structures in complex terrain areas. This article presents the application of a newly developed loop source SATEM system, integrated with multi-rotor unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), to conduct deep geological structure detection experiments on a large-scale landslide. The inversion results clearly depict the spatial distribution of the Feixianguan Formation and Longtan Formation, as well as vertical fractures developed in the strata due to underground coal mining. The detection test demonstrates the applicability of the SATEM method in detecting underground structures in Karst Plateau special landform areas, providing a new detection approach for similar regions. This study aims to investigate the impact of vegetation restoration on soil humus and aggregate stability within the karst region of Southwest China. This study focused on soils at five vegetation succession stages (abandoned land, grassland, shrub rangeland, shrubland, and secondary forest) in the typical karst region, and the aggregate stability was determined using wet sieving and the Le Bissonnais method. Simultaneously, the Pallo method and separation extraction were used to determine the humus composition, aiming to analyze the distribution of humus content in the soil aggregates and its effect on aggregate stability. The results revealed the following: (1) The mean weight diameter of soil aggregates significantly increased with vegetation restoration stages. Soil water-stable aggregates at each vegetation stage mainly included particles over 2 mm in size. (2) The humic acid and fulvic acid contents consistently increased with vegetation restoration, and the precipitation quotient value of the humification degree showed an increasing trend. At each vegetation restoration stage, the percentage of each humus component was, from highest to lowest, as follows: insoluble HM, fulvic acid, humic acid, clay-bound HM, and iron-bound HM. (3) Through stepwise regression analysis, humic acid content in >2 mm aggregates, fulvic acid and clay-bound HM contents in 1–2 mm aggregates, and insoluble HM content in <0.25 mm aggregates were the dominant factors affecting soil aggregate stability in the karst region. These results aim to provide novel insights for a more in-depth comprehension of the restoration and rehabilitation of vegetation within the karst region of Southwest China, thereby laying a robust foundation for scientific theories and further investigations. This paper focuses on five culinary events on Slovenia's Karst Plateau (Kras). It presents visitors' motives for attending these events, their satisfaction with them, and their views on sustainability. These traditional culinary events, which take place in the same gastronomic region, differ in their scale, theme, character, and history. A survey was conducted among 244 visitors, approximately 50% of whom had a university degree. The most important motives for their visit include local cuisine; experiencing something new, different, or special; and exploring natural heritage and especially cultural heritage. Visitor satisfaction is the greatest at boutique culinary events, where the main theme is highlighted more strongly than at large-scale culinary events. The main challenge in terms of the sustainability of culinary events is public transport access to the venues. Significant progress would be made by reducing the amount of disposable packaging made from non-sustainable materials. Definition of karst spring catchment or basin area and boundaries belongs to one of the greatest problems of karst hydrology and hydrogeology, not adequately solved until now. This paper tries to address main problems in defining this crucial parameter. The theoretical aspect of this issue is discussed in the first two chapters. We have presented the example of the catchment area and boundaries definition for the karst spring Žrnovnica catchment in Dinaric karst. Topographic catchment area of the Žrnovnica Spring is 8.4 km. The significant discrepancy in size of the hydrological-hydrogeological and topographical catchment is very common characteristic for the springs located in the karst areas. In the case of the Žrnovnica Spring, the hydrogeological catchment is at least seven times larger than topographic. Two following simple hydrological methods are used in order to calculate its hydrologic-hydrogeologic catchment: (1) the relationship between mean annual discharges and annual rainfall falling on the catchment, and (2) the Turc method. It is estimated that hydrogeologic catchment area of the Žrnovnica karst spring is much larger and very probably ranges between 60 and 80 km. These values represent first rough assessment, which should be confirmed by more detailed interdisciplinary investigations. According to the performed tracing tests, it seems that the catchment spreads on the north-east from the topographic catchment and that the Žrnovnica Spring karst aquifer is fed by groundwater overflow from the neighbouring more abundant karts spring Jadro. Optimizing the green use efficiency of cultivated land in the karst region of southwest China is crucial for promoting sustainable development of land resources and achieving harmony between humans and nature. Based on the epsilon-based measure model and geographically and temporally weighted regression methods, this paper investigated the spatio-temporal variation and influencing factors of cultivated land green utilization efficiency. The results indicated that: i) Cultivated land green utilization efficiency had slightly increased from 0.842 in 2000 to 0.866 in 2020. ii) The spatial pattern of cultivated land green utilization efficiency showed a significant positive correlation, with a "hotspot-not significant-coldspot" from north to south. iii) Its spatial heterogeneity had increased during the observation period, with high-efficiency areas shifting from northeast to north. iv) The proportion of agricultural economy, general public budget revenue, per unit cultivated land value had a positive impact on the cultivated land green utilization efficiency, while urbanization rate, per capita cultivated land area, land replanting index, average altitude had a negative impact. Moreover, the driving factors exhibited significant spatiotemporal heterogeneity. Soil organic carbon (SOC) contributes the most significant portion of carbon storage in the terrestrial ecosystem. The potential for variability in carbon losses from soil can lead to severe consequences such as climate change. While extensive studies have been conducted to characterize how land cover type, soil texture, and topography impact the distribution of SOC stocks across different ecosystems, little is known about in Karst Region. Here, we characterized SOC stocks with intensive sampling at the local scale (495 representative samples) via Random Forest Regression (RF) and Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Our findings revealed significant differences in SOC stock among land cover types, with croplands exhibiting the lowest SOC stocks, indicating that management practices could play a crucial role in SOC stocks. Conversely, there was little correlation between SOC stock and clay percentage, suggesting that soil texture was not a primary factor influencing SOC at a local scale. Further, Annual Precipitation was identified as the key driving factor for the dynamics of SOC stocks with the help of RF and PCA. A substantial SOC deficit was observed in most soils in this study, as evaluated by a SOC/clay ratio, indicating a significant potential in SOC sequestration with practical measures in the karst region. As such, future research focused on simulating SOC dynamics in the context of climate change should consider the controlling factors at a local scale and summarize them carefully during the up-scaling process. Rocky desertification (RD), a natural and human-induced process of land degradation in karst areas, has become the primary ecological disaster and one of the obstacles to sustainable ecological development in southwest China. Nevertheless, the variation of soil physical and chemical properties, bacterial and fungal communities, and their relationships in RD forests remains limited. Therefore, soil samples were collected from forests under four degrees of RD (NRD, non-RD; LRD, light RD; MRD, moderate RD; and SRD, severe RD) and subjected to high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA and ITS1 genes. The results showed a significant reduction in bacterial richness and diversity, while fungal richness and diversity decreased markedly and then showed a balanced trend with the increase in RD degree, indicating that bacteria and fungi did not present the same dynamics in response to the process of RD. The bacterial communities were dominated by Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Acidobacteria, and Chloroflexi, while the fungal communities were dominated by Basidiomycota, Ascomycota, and Mortierellomycota. The PCoA and NMDS demonstrated significant differences in microbial communities in study sites, among which the fungal communities in non-RD forest and LRD forest clustered together, suggesting that fungal communities were more stable than bacteria in RD forest. The db-RDA, Mantel test, and random forest model confirmed the important role of soil BD, pH, SOC, AN, and AP in driving microbial diversity and communities. The IndVal analysis suggested that Chloroflexi, Patescibacteria, Atheliales, and Cantharellales with high indicator values were identified as potential bio-indicators for RD forests. This study could not only improve our understanding of bacterial and fungal community dynamics across RD gradients, but also could provide useful information for the further use of microorganisms as indicators to reflect the environmental changes and ecosystem status during forest RD. The aim of this paper is to analyse hydrological measurements obtained from Blue Lake located near the town of Imotski (Croatia), during the period from 6 November 2009 at 10:26 h to 4 September 2010 at 03:26 h (7230 h or 302 days). The water depth, water temperature and electrical conductivity of the water were continuously measured during this period. The measurements were obtained with a CTD DIVER (Schlumberger Water Services). The instrument was fixed at the bottom of Blue Lake, which means that all the measured data refer to a single point of measurement. The data represent the first systematic and continuous monitoring of the hydrological parameters of this fascinating karst phenomenon. The hydrological analysis also involved daily rainfall data and daily mean air temperatures recorded at the nearby Imotski meteorological station. The rate of water level rise and fall and the hourly and daily average inflow and outflow into and from the lake were calculated using the available data. The analysis led to the conclusion that Blue Lake is mainly recharged by water coming from the karst aquifer, the dimensions and the characteristics of which have not yet been adequately studied. In this paper, by the example of Canin Massif, it is demonstrated, how GIS-techniques can be used for the study of high mountain karst terrains. In case of Canin, elevation and slope histograms show characteristic differences in plateau levels and landforming processes between the northern, western and southern sectors of the mountains. Ridge and valley map (derived from the digital elevation model) and thalweg analysis are used to recognize drainage reorganizations north of the Italian Canin plateau. Potential snow accumulation locations and nunataks are determined based mainly on the slope map. Geomorphological sketch maps and statistical analysis of closed depressions are also carried out in this study supporting the relatively young age of superficial karstification and the strong structural impact. Finally, it is concluded, that quantitative and visual capabilities of GIS are useful in discriminating the effects of glacial, fluvial, structural and karst processes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Agricultural soils originating from carbonate rocks within karst regions exhibit inherent high concentrations of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) due to geogenic processes. However, the influencing factors of the elevated levels of PTEs in the naturally contaminated karst regions remain inadequately comprehended. This research investigates the chemical compositions of 278 soils derived from carbonate rocks. Descriptive statistics, stepwise multiple regression, and the random forest (RF) method were applied to screen the significant factors that affect the distribution, migration, and enrichment of the PTEs in soils. Cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) are the most highly contaminated PTEs in the soils of the study area, and the average contents of Cd and As in soils are 11.5 and 2.92 times the national soil background value, respectively. The pollution risk ranking of PTEs is Cd > As > Cr > Zn > Pb > Cu > Ni > Hg, using the proportion exceeding the risk screening thresholds of agricultural land as the standard. Soil Fe2O3 and Mn contents, soil pH and total organic carbon (TOC) values, and weathering intensity (characterized using the chemical index of alternation, CIA) are the most important factors influencing the PTE levels in agricultural soils. Aims: Soil phosphorus (P) cycling in karst regions is mainly regulated by microbial activities. Natural restoration has been widely adopted in the degraded karst regions of southwest China. However, the response of functional genes and microbial communities involved in soil P cycling to revegetation has not been well characterized. Methods: We used metagenomic sequencing to investigate the genes and microorganisms related to soil P cycling derived from natural restoration stages (shrubbery, TG; secondary forest, SG; old-growth forest, OG) in the southeast of Guizhou Province, China. Results: Natural restoration affected the composition of soil P cycling genes. When TG restored into OG, the relative abundance of organic P (OP) mineralization genes increased from 45.78% to 48.38%, while the genes related to inorganic P (IP) solubilization decreased from 27.19% to 25.03%. The effect of soil nutrients on the relative abundance of OP and IP genes was greater than that of aboveground plant diversity. Structural equation modeling further indicated that soil nutrients directly drove the increase in the relative abundance of OP genes and indirectly impacted the relative abundance of IP genes. The results show that Proteobacteria (38.97%–52.72%) and Actinobacteria (13.44%–29.34%) are the main contributors to soil OP and IP cycling genes, but their contributions vary in different restoration stages. Conclusions: Natural restoration of the degraded karst vegetation changes the acquisition strategy of soil microbial P by enhancing OP but decreasing IP cycling potentials. The ecological environment in the karst region of southwest China is fragile, and vegetation degradation is considered the main cause of this phenomenon. Vegetation growth is affected by preferential flow due to a large number of fissures and macropores in the soil. Therefore, the preferential flow and preferential paths in local typical vegetation need to be studied. The distribution and developmental characteristics of preferential flow and preferential paths in three typical local stands were obtained by conducting field staining tracer experiments and using image processing techniques. The results showed that there was preferential flow movement in the soil moisture of the local understorey and that there was a high degree of preferential flow development and high variability. The degree of preferential flow in several typical forests can be expressed, from highest to lowest, in the following order: secondary forests, Cupressus duclouxiana Hickel (Hickel., 1814) forest, and Pinus massoniana (Lamb., 1803) forest. The preferential paths in the soil were mainly distributed above 15 cm, and the number of preferential paths with a small influence radius was much greater than that with a large influence radius. The preferential paths with an influence radius of 2.5~5 mm accounted for the largest proportion. The total number of preferential paths in the P. massoniana forest was small. The preferential paths in the secondary and C. duclouxiana Hickel forests were similar in number, but the secondary forests had more preferential paths with a large influence radius. This study investigated the characteristics of preferential flow and preferential paths in the typical forests of the karst region in southwest China, and it can provide data and research directions for the study of hydrological processes in local forest vegetation. Influenced by the topography, the spatial variation of soil thickness on karst slopes is very large, and accordingly the spatial variation of soil moisture is also large. Therefore, analyzing the spatial heterogeneity of soil moisture on hillslopes is important for maintaining ecosystem stability. Combining geostatistical methods and GIS technology, the spatial variability and distribution pattern of soil moisture and the influencing factors of spatial variation and surface soil moisture (0–7 cm) on a typical karst shrub–grass hillslope were analyzed. The results showed that the mean soil moisture and coefficient of variation (CV) ranged between 25.7–42.6% and 10.3–20.9%, respectively, showing a moderate variation. The soil moisture presented a moderate or strong spatial autocorrelation in the sampling scale. The occurrence of rainfall events can exert a great influence on reducing the spatial heterogeneity of soil moisture. The spatial distribution pattern of soil moisture showed roughly plaque or stripe distribution. When soil moisture was much lower, the patch space fragmentation of soil moisture was higher. The soil moisture was higher in the low and middle parts of the plot. We can conclude that factors such as topography, vegetation, and weather conditions will exert a significant effect on soil moisture spatial variability. Spatio-temporal changes in cultivated land have a profound impact on food security and sustainable development. However, existing studies on spatio-temporal changes in cultivated land mostly focus on single factors, for instance quantity, quality and ecology, that cannot comprehensively reflect the changes in total production capacity and the sustainability of cultivated land. This study aims to construct a comprehensive analysis approach and to provide a reference basis for a comprehensive analysis of the extent of changes in overall cultivated land food-production capacity and the formulation of cultivated land conservation-related policies. This comprehensive analysis method constructed from three dimensions: quantity, production capacity and ecology, fully reflects the changes in the total amount, structure, rate of change, spatial distribution, quality, total production capacity and sustainability of cultivated land. The results from the application of this approach to Long'an County, Guangxi Province, China demonstrate that: (a) from 2010 to 2020, the total amount of cultivated land in Long'an County decreased sharply by 30.83%, accounted for mainly by the conversion into orchards, forest land and other garden land; (b) the quality of cultivated land improved by 2.71% on average, mostly in relation to natural factors; (c) the total food-production capacity of cultivated land decreased by 28.96% on average, mainly due to the decrease in the area of cultivated land; (d) both the ecological grade and the sustainability of cultivated land decreased slightly; (e) the barycenter of cultivated land migrated 3.3 km to the ecologically sensitive areas in the west, and the patch size of cultivated land decreased from an average of 2.60 hectares/pc in 2010 to that of 1.34 hectares/pc in 2020, suggesting increased fragmentation of cultivated land; and (f) the patch regularity of cultivated land decreased from 2.08 in 2010 to 1.76 in 2020, showing improved patch regularity and slightly better adaptability to mechanization. There were two main reasons for the lower, total food production capacity in Long'an County: first, the low comparative income of grain cultivation, because of which farmers spontaneously adjusted the agricultural cultivation structure to pursue high returns; and second, the lack of targeted government policies to protect cultivated land. In general, this comprehensive analysis method is applicable to other provinces in China or other regions abroad to provide a reference basis for a comprehensive understanding of changes in the food production capacity of cultivated land and the formulation of policies on cultivated land protection. To explore soil nutrients and moisture changes in different karst mountain agroforestry, in the plateau mountains of Southern China Karst, we used secondary tree and irrigation forest (C) as a reference for our study and selected four mixed agroforestry species (walnut + maize + potato (HYM), walnut + maize (HTY), poplar + ryegrass (YSH), and maize + ryegrass (YMH)) for comparison. First, soil moisture change characteristics were monitored in situ in the field. Second, for soil samples, soil bulk density, porosity, and permeability were analyzed, soil nutrient (K, Na, Ca, and Mg) characteristics were tested and analyzed. Then, we explored the relationship between agroforestry and soil moisture, soil moisture and soil nutrients, soil moisture and precipitation, and agroforestry and soil nutrients. It is shown (1) during the monitored period, variation trends in soil nutrients in four types of agroforestry was small, but it increased/decreased significantly compared with the secondary forest, which the variation range was more than 5%; (2) the changes of soil water content were significantly affected by precipitation, soil porosity and permeability, the moisture content changes of HYM, HTY, YSH, and YMH agroforestry were significantly correlated with precipitation, soil porosity, and permeability; (3) under the same precipitation conditions, different types had different lags on soil water regulation, with the average HYM 0.8 h, HTY 0.6 h, YSH 0.3 h, and YMH 0.4 h, each type soil responded at 2–3 h after rain, and the soil moisture content returned to the normal level; and (4) the variation of soil moisture content fluctuated seasonally, and the most obvious was HYM and HTY agroforestry, their Cv value between winter and summer exceeded 21%. The results provide basic theoretical support for further exploring the relationship among agroforestry, soil, moisture, and nutrients and enrich the content of the development of agroforestry in karst areas. Three new species of the leafhopper genus Mitjaevia Dworakowska 1970, M. bijiensis sp. nov., M. solitaria sp. nov., and M. salaxia sp. nov., are described from the Karst region of Southwest China. Karst is a common engineering environment in the process of tunnel construction, which poses a serious threat to the construction and operation, and the theory on calculating the settlement without the assumption of semi-infinite half-space is lack. Meanwhile, due to the limitation of test conditions or field measurement, the settlement of high-speed railway tunnel in Karst region is difficult to control and predict effectively. In this study, a novel intelligent displacement prediction model, following the machine learning (ML) incorporated with the finite difference method, is developed to evaluate the settlement of the tunnel floor. A back propagation neural network (BPNN) algorithm and a random forest (RF) algorithm are used herein, while the Bayesian regularization is applied to improve the BPNN and the Bayesian optimization is adopted for tuning the hyperparameters of RF. The newly proposed model is employed to predict the settlement of Changqingpo tunnel floor, located in the southeast of Yunnan Guizhou Plateau, China. Numerical simulations have been performed on the Changqingpo tunnel in terms of variety of karst size, and locations. Validations of the numerical simulations have been validated by the field data. A data set of 456 samples based on the numerical results is constructed to evaluate the accuracy of models' predictions. The correlation coefficients of the optimum BPNN and BR model in testing set are 0.987 and 0.925, respectively, indicating that the proposed BPNN model has more great potential to predict the settlement of tunnels located in karst areas. The case study of Changqingpo tunnel in karst region has demonstrated capability of the intelligent displacement prediction model to well predict the settlement of tunnel floor in Karst region. Soil organic carbon (SOC) sequestration is closely linked to global climate change and soil quality. Secondary succession of agricultural abandonment under the Grain for Green Project (GGP) program generally promotes SOC sequestration in the karst region of southwestern China. This study investigated the controlling mechanism of enhancing SOC sequestration during secondary succession of agricultural abandonment, based on soil aggregation, soil erosion, and soil Ca dynamic. In the study area, croplands, shrub-grass lands, and secondary forest lands were regarded as the three stages during the secondary succession of cropland abandonment by the space-for-time substitution method. The proportions of water-stable and different-sized aggregates, SOC contents associated with aggregates, soil Ca contents and Ca/Al ratios, and soil erodibility K factors were analyzed in the soils at the 0–10, 10–20, and 20–30 cm depths. The proportions of macro-aggregates at the 0–10 cm depth in the croplands (mean 61.3%) were significantly lower than those in the shrub-grass lands (mean 78.5%) and secondary forest lands (mean 81.6%). The SOC contents associated with macro-aggregates at the 0–20 cm depth in the croplands (mean 30.5 g kg–1) were significantly lower than those in the secondary forest lands (mean 52.2 g kg–1) but were slightly (not significantly) lower than those under the shrub-grass lands (mean 38.6 g kg–1). Soil Ca/Al ratios at the 0–20 cm depth in the croplands (mean 0.087) and shrub-grass lands (mean 0.105) were significantly lower than those under the secondary forest lands (mean 0.63). The proportions of water-stable aggregates increased and the K factor decreased after cropland abandonment. These results indicated that under the experiment conditions, soil aggregation increased, soil erosion reduced, and soil Ca accumulated during the secondary succession of agricultural abandonment. A conceptual model for enhancing SOC sequestration during the secondary succession of agricultural abandonment was proposed. Soil microbial residues play an important role in the formation and stabilization of soil organic matter and can be quantitatively characterized by amino sugars. However, the response of soil microbial residues to agricultural cultivation in karst areas remains unclear. In this study, we collected soil samples from natural reserved land as well as five plantation forests dominated by Citrus trees cultivated for 0, 1, 5, 15, 30 years to examine the effects of agricultural cultivation on the content of microbial residues (amino sugar analysis). Results showed that: (1) Soil Amino Sugars (ASs) contents were significantly reduced after agricultural cultivation along with the sharp decrease in soil organic carbon (SOC). After 30 years of cultivation, the contents of total ASs, glucosamine (GluN), galactosamine (GalN), and muramic acid (MurA) in cultivated soils decreased by 58.22%, 55.30%, 27.11%, respectively, compared with 0 yr.; (2) Microbial residual carbon contribution to SOC increased from 34.11% to 81.33% after 30 years of cultivation, including fungal residual carbon (FRC) (25.79% to 48.6%) and bacterial residual carbon (BRC) (8.32% to 32.72%); (3) Soil GluN/MurA values tended to decrease with increasing cultivation years. The results highlight the significant effect of cultivation years on amino sugar accumulation. It indicates that the years of reclamation in karst areas have different impacts on the organic fractions derived from various microbial communities in the soil organic matter pool, and the microbial residues indicated by amino sugar are of great significance for the interception of soil organic matter. Cave entrance data are crucial as the primary indicators in the underground water inventory of a karst area. The data collection was traditionally conducted by field survey, but it is very costly and not efficient. Remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) can help estimate cave entrance locations more efficiently. In this study, variables for cave entrance identification were determined using remote sensing and GIS. In addition, the accuracy of the Cave Entrance Location Model (CELM) derived from binary logistic regression was examined. Several remote sensing and geological data were used including ALOS PALSAR Digital Elevation Model (DEM), Digital Elevation Model Nasional (DEMNAS), topographic and geological map. Topographic elements were extracted by using Toposhape and Topographic Position Index (TPI). Contours derived from the topographic map showed the highest accuracy for extraction of topographic elements compared to ALOS PALSAR DEM and DEMNAS, hence it was used for further analysis. Binary logistic regression was applied to estimate the probability of cave entrance locations based on the variables used. The result shows that three topographic variables: ravine, stream, and midslope drainage had a significant value for estimating cave entrance location. Using these variables, logit equation was formulated to generate a probability map. The result shows that cave entrances are likely to be located in a dry valley. The accuracy assessment using the field data showed that 52.77% of cave entrances are located in medium to high potential areas. Exploring the dynamics of soil erosion and identifying its driving mechanisms is key to understanding soil erosion processes, particularly in karst areas. In this study, the RUSLE model, optimized on the basis of rocky desertification factors, was used to estimate soil erosion in a karst plateau gorge area in SW China. The spatial and temporal dynamics of soil erosion in the region over the past 20 years were analyzed on the basis of slope units, while the relationship between soil erosion and elevation, slope, fractional vegetation cover (FVC), karst rocky desertification (KRD), rainfall, and land use cover/change (LUCC) was identified quantitatively by the geographical detector on the basis of spatial heterogeneity. The results showed that: (1) The no erosion area decreased from 2000 to 2020, with the highest proportion of light to medium erosion and an increasing trend of soil erosion. (2) Soil erosion conversion mainly occurred between no erosion, slight erosion, and light erosion. (3) The hotspots of erosion occurred in high slope–low elevation and high slope–high elevation units, while the coldspots of erosion occurred in low slope–low elevation units. (4) Soil erosion was positively correlated with FVC and slope, and negatively correlated with KRD. (5) The dominant factor of soil erosion changed from KRD-slope to LUCC-slope and finally to elevation-slope, while the q value of rainfall-elevation had the most significant increase throughout the study period. The article focuses on the eleventh Karst Research Conference that was held in Decorah, Iowa during April 5-7, 1990. The periodic meetings explore different karst regions through an intensive field trip led by local researchers, followed by paper presentations by geographers, geologists, chemists, environmentalists, engineers. The meeting showcased the karst area of southern Minnesota and northeastern Iowa where much recent work has been done on the impact of pesticides and agricultural practices on karst terranes.

This study examined the provenance of stone tesserae from three Roman mosaics from Celje, Slovenia, using optical microscopy, X‐ray fluorescence spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and X‐ray diffraction. Nine microfacies were distinguished. Miliolid limestones identified in the white tesserae, and mudstones/laminated wackestones in the black tesserae, suggest they originated from the Karst region. The sparry limestone in the yellow tesserae probably originates from the Mediterranean. The mudstone/wackestone with planktonic foraminifera in the red tesserae originates from an outcrop in southwestern Slovenia. Green tesserae tuffs are of local origin, whereas the white tuffs could originate from Italian Oligo‐Miocene volcanism rhyolites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Karst Plateau is characterized by elevated heavy metals (HM), the farmland soils in the Karst Plateau area is especially vulnerable to HM pollution. To cope with soil HM pollution and conduct precaution in Karst Plateau, the key bottleneck is to understand the pollution levels, sources, and priority‐control of HM. Hence, geochemical baselines of HM in farmland soils were established to accurately evaluate the pollution characteristics. Pollution sources were identified with multivariate statistics, geostatistical methods, and receptor models. Priority‐control of HM were distinguished via health assessments with a Monte Carlo simulation. A remarkable accumulation of Pb, Sb, Zn, As, and Cd was observed. Hotspots of As, Cd, Pb, Sb, and Zn clustered in the southwestern region of Hezhang. Pb–Zn related activities, cement product activities, coal mining, and coal combustion were dominant sources. Both noncarcinogenic risk and carcinogenic risk followed the order: children>adult females>adult males. As, Cd, and Pb were found to be priority contaminants in farmland soils in Hezhang. In this paper a new species Salpingoporella tari n.sp. is established, found in a sample of Barremian intraclastic grainstone. It is similar to S. annulata (LORENZ) and S. grudii (RADOICIC), but visibly more robust. It has few branches per whorl, and the whorls being spaced far apart. The branches are laterally compressed at their distal ends, therefore being vertically elongated. New finding of Salpingoporella cemi (RADOICIC) gave the new data the variability of the shape of its branches, and on the precise stratigraphic position of the investigated localities. Besides, Salpingoporella patruliusi BUCUR is illustrated, this being its first find outside Monti Apuseni (south Carpathians) and its geographic range thus encompassing also the Dinarides. Also, a large observed number of specimens of Salpingoporella muehlbergii (LORENZ) with ramified thallus makes that feature both its species-specific and generic characteristic. Quite strongly varying values of various biometric parameters, depending on the position the thallus in one and the same specimen, raises serious questions as to their reliability and usefulness as a distinguishing factor in comparing both the specimens of one and the same species and of species of the same genus.
