In this study, a novel high-speed flyer launching strategy based on electric explosion and laser coupling was proposed to improve the launching ability of electro-explosively actuators and expand the dynamic high-pressure loading method. First, an electro-explosively actuated flyer launcher with a transparent glass substrate was fabricated by microelectromechanical system (MEMS) scale methods, which acted as a carrier to verify the idea of electric explosion and laser coupling. Then, a device of electric explosion combined with laser driving high-speed flyers was established to study the influence of nanosecond pulsed laser on the flyer launching ability of electro-explosively actuators. Finally, the velocity characteristics of the flyer and the plasma characteristics under coupled conditions are studied. The test results indicated that the introduction of laser had a positive effect on increasing the speed of the flyer. In addition, it was found that the acceleration history of the flyer is affected by the energy of electric explosion, laser energy, and the introduction time of laser. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The safety and reliability of the initiating explosive devices (IEDs) are critical for the weapon system. As the core components of IEDs, the method of resistance designing and the performance of conversion energy of energy conversion components (ECCs) are worth being studied. In this paper, the design method for the resistance of ECCs is established based on the finite element discrete method, and the currents of melting and electric explosion are presented for evaluating the performance of ECCs. The results show that the resistance of the ECCs is 1 ± 0.05 Ω with consistency. The ECCs were designed by the established design method of resistance and manufactured by the established machining method. The melting current of ECCs is 1.8 A, which is calculated by the infrared temperature measurement and finite element simulation. The electric explosion current of ECCs is 5 A, which was obtained by combining the snapshot obtained via the high-speed camera and finite element simulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The integration of fuzes and initiators has been promoted by the development requirements of the miniaturized and intelligent ammunition, and the micro-detonated system integrated with S&A device is the key development direction. Initiators are considered the first component of the weapon system, and the safety and reliability of the initiators directly affect the safety and reliability of the weapon system. With the development of micro-electromechanical system (MEMS) initiators and the integration of fuze, in order to further improve the safety of the weapon system in the miniaturized and intelligent ammunition system, it is necessary to integrate the MEMS S&A device with the initiators, which is an important technical feature, to form a MEMS initiator with functional integration, high safety and reliability. MEMS S&A device is the key technology of the MEMS initiators' devices with safety-isolation function. This paper summarizes the development of MEMS S&A devices in micro-fuzes and the micro-detonated systems in recent years. Combined with comparative analysis, it analyzes and summarizes the driving principles, application platforms, process technologies, structural material characteristics and other aspects, and proposes a suitable structure for the MEMS initiators integrated with S&A devices, which provides a reference for the research on the design of MEMS initiators with safety-isolation function. In view of the low-energy explosion foil detonation system's requirements for the integration technology of high-voltage switches and technical overload resistance technology, a magnetron sputtering coater is used to sputter copper film on the surface of the substrate. The thickness is 4.0 μm, the radius of the main electrode is 4 mm, the trigger electrode is 0.6 mm and 0.8 mm, and the main gaps are 0.8 mm, 1.0 mm, 1.2 mm mm, 1.8 mm, 2.0 mm, 2.2 mm, and 2.6 mm. Copper foil three-electrode planar spark gap high voltage switches are designed and manufactured; and the static self-breakdown characteristics, dynamic operating characteristics, and discharge life characteristics of the three-electrode planar spark gap high voltage switch based on copper foil are studied in this paper. The test results show that with the increase of the main electrode gap from 0.8 mm to 2.6 mm, the self-breakdown voltage of the planar spark gap switch increases, and the working voltage also increases. When the main electrode gap is a maximum of 2.6 mm, the self-breakdown voltage of the switch can reach 3480 V, which indicates that the maximum operating voltage of the switch is 3480 V. When the charging voltage is 2.0 kV, with the increase of the main electrode gap from 0.8 mm to 2.6 mm, the minimum trigger voltage value of the planar spark gap switch increases from 677 V to 1783 V (a = 0.6 mm), and from 685 V to 1766 V (a = 0.8 mm), the switch on time is 16 ns, 22 ns, 28 ns, 48 ns, 64 ns, 77 ns, 93 ns (a = 0.6 mm), and 26 ns, 34 ns, 51 ns, 67 ns, 81 ns, 102 ns (a = 0.6 mm). With the increase of the gap between the two main electrodes of the switch, the maximum static working voltage of the three-electrode plane spark gap high-voltage switch increases, the minimum trigger voltage value also increases, and the on-time of the switch gradually becomes longer. The peak current of the discharge circuit decreases and the dynamic impedance and inductive reactance of the switch also increase; as the width of the trigger electrode increases, the minimum trigger voltage decreases, the dynamic impedance and inductance decrease, and the switch operating voltage with the same parameters is higher. The easier the switch is to turn on, the lower the minimum trigger voltage. The electrode thickness of the three-electrode plane spark gap switch has a certain influence on the field strength and the service life of the switch. In this paper, the effect of grain size and micromorphology of Cu foil on the velocity of the flyer of an exploding foil detonator was studied. A Cu foil with different grain sizes and micromorphologies was prepared by the physical vapor deposition sputtering method. The flyer velocity of the Cu foil was measured by the photon Doppler technique (PDT). The influence of the grain size and micromorphology of the Cu foil (which was the core transducer of the exploding foil detonator) on the flyer velocity and reacted morphology was discussed. The results show that the grain size and micromorphology of the Cu film can greatly affect the velocity and morphology of the flyer. The grain size of the Cu film is more uniform, and the stimulus response in the middle area of the bridge foil is more concentrated. In addition, the current density becomes more uniform, resulting in a better explosion performance. Consequently, the speed of the formed flyer becomes higher, leading to a smoother flyer surface, which is more conductive to energy conversion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The exploding foil initiator has been developed to satisfy the requirements of modern high-performance artillery and aerospace technologies with respect to speed, consistency, and safety. This study examines the explosive process of the nine-point exploding foil bridge through simulations and experiments. The factors affecting the detonation-related performance, such as the firing circuit, detonation mode, bridge foil shapes, and output charge are analyzed and discussed. In this study, we reported that two-dimensional titanium carbide (Ti 3 C 2) MXene has intrinsic catalytic activity for thermal decomposition of high-energy ammonium perchlorate-based molecule perovskite (H 2 dabco)[NH 4 (ClO 4) 3 ] (DAP-4). The micro morphology and structure of Ti 3 C 2 MXene were characterized. Thermal catalysis decomposition of DAP-4 using Ti 3 C 2 as a novel catalyst was investigated by Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results showed that with 10 wt% Ti 3 C 2 added, the decomposition temperature of DAP-4 was reduced to 341.2 °C at the heating rate of 10 °C·min−1, which decreased by 43.8 °C from raw DAP-4 (385 °C). The activation energy of DAP-4 thermal decomposition effectively reduced from 181 kJ mol−1 to 155 kJ mol−1. A possible mechanism of Ti 3 C 2 MXene for the catalysis thermal decomposition of DAP-4 was proposed. This work provides a proof-of-principle concept for the thermal catalysis decomposition of ammonium perchlorate-based molecule perovskite energetic materials using the titanium carbide MXene as a catalyst. • Ti 3 C 2 MXene has intrinsic catalytic activity for thermal decomposition of DAP-4. • The decomposition temperature and activation energy of DAP-4 has reduced to 341.2 °C and 155 kJ mol−1. • A possible mechanism of Ti 3 C 2 MXene for the catalysis thermal decomposition of DAP-4 was proposed. In order to enhance the ignition ability and reliability of traditional electronic initiators, a novel electronic initiator has been designed to integrate with a nanothermite multilayer film and an electrode plug. The Al/CuO x nanothermite multilayer film with different thickness is deposited on the surface of the electrode plug by magnetron sputtering which uses Pt-W wire as electronic resistance. The exothermicity of Al/CuO x nanothermite multilayer film is so favourable that the ignition ability of electronic initiator is significantly improved. The full firing-voltage sensitivity of the electronic initiator is 10.8 V. The thickness of Al/CuO x multilayer film has negligible effects on the ignition time and ignition energy, but leads to great impacts on the function time, the maximum length of combustion flame and ignition ability. The electrical ignition experiments have exhibited outstanding ignition ability, since the electronic initiator can easily fire the insensitive ignition composition of boron-potassium nitrate (B-KNO 3 ) tablet in a gap of 20.35 mm. It proves that this novel proposal of remoulding the traditional electronic ignition devices will distinctly improve the ignition ability and reliability of electronic initiator., Competing Interests: The authors declare no competing interests.
