Due to rapid homogenization in habitat types as a result of urbanization, some urban birds adapt their nesting strategies to changes in local habitat characteristics. Bird nesting decisions might have been mainly linked to resource constraints and ensuring reproductive success. In this study, we examined patterns of nesting behavior by spotted doves (Spilopelia chinensis) in a rapidly urbanizing area of Nanchang, China using ArcGIS 10.8, satellite tracking, camera traps, and field survey. To explore the mechanisms underlying nesting behavior in urban habitats, we assessed the correlations between nest reuse and reproductive success, and between nest reuse and nest predation. From December 2018 to December 2021, a total of 302 breeding nests were surveyed. The results revealed that the nest reuse rate was 38.08% (n = 115). Nests closer to trunk, with lower nest position and higher large‐scale urbanization score tended to have higher reuse rate. In addition, nests with the higher the nest height and percent of canopy cover, and the lower small‐scale urbanization score were more likely to reproduce successfully, and the reused nests also reproduce more successfully. The reproductive success associated with nest reuse was significantly higher than that associated with new nests (χ2 = 8.461, p =.004). High degree of urbanization promoted nest reuse of spotted doves (large‐scale urbanization score, z = 2.094, p =.036), which apparently enhanced their reproductive success (nest reuse, z = 2.737, p =.006). In conclusion, a nest structure with good permeability is the material basis for the nest reuse in spotted dove, while the relatively low risk of predation in urban habitat and the scarcity of nest site resources due to urbanization increase the tendency of birds to reuse old nests, which is associated with their reproductive success and evolutionary fitness. With the development of high-strength marine diesel engines, piston skirt lubrication plays an increasingly important role. In this study, to ensure that the mixed lubrication can be applied, the contact of the PS corner and CL is simplified to a spring–damper system. A coupled dynamical–tribological numerical model of a piston skirt is proposed by combining mixed lubrication and the secondary motion of the piston. The model is then used to study how the thermal effect of the piston skirt-cylinder liner friction pair affects (i) the secondary motion of the piston, (ii) the contact force of the piston-skirt corner points, and (iii) the lubrication characteristics, while considering ring friction, friction moment of piston pin and three-dimensional thermal deformation of the piston and cylinder liner. The results show that the secondary motion under the thermal condition is less than that under the cold condition, and the reverse rotation of the piston under the thermal condition occurs earlier. Asperity contact and corner points contact appear under the thermal condition, and the friction mean effective pressure under the cold condition is 47.7% greater than that under the thermal condition. The coupling between the crankshaft and the camshaft is neglected before in fault diagnosis which may lead to incomplete fault information. In this paper, a new torsional coupling model of a diesel generator transmission system is proposed for fault diagnosis. The natural frequency and forced torsional vibration response of the model are obtained by the system matrix method and Newmark-β method. For the system without considering the lumped mass of camshafts, some key natural frequencies are lost. The vibration dynamics are compared for the transmission system with and without the new coupling model. And important frequency responses are missed in the spectrums of the forced torsional vibration without the new coupling model. Finally, the new coupling model is implemented in fault diagnosis and the cause of an unusual vibration fault is deduced in the simulation, which confirms the feasibility of the proposed model in fault diagnosis. In this paper, the wake and potential flow effects of the rotor–stator interaction in a centrifugal pump with guide vanes are investigated from the view of the separation of turbulent and acoustic pressure fluctuations. The highest vibration levels in pumps are, in general, originated in the potential flow and wake effects. However, it is challenging to distinguish their effects on flow evolution. The pellicular mode decomposition method is applied to innovatively separate potential flow and wake disturbances in a centrifugal pump. By pellicular, we mean an infinitely thin layer of air located on the monitoring surface. The pellicular modes are a set of acoustic modes, with which a set of normalized orthogonal basis can be constructed. The impacts of potential flow and wake disturbances are visualized and evaluated quantitatively. The results show that only a very limited region is where the potential flow disturbance works. The higher the harmonics, the smaller the disturbance range. The wake disturbance is responsible for the modal pressure field. Modal pressure fields with low diametrical nodes decay more slowly than those with low harmonics. In addition, special attention is paid to the impact of the geometric asymmetry of the volute on the impeller force. The circular volute with a two-stage pressure drop improves the radial force of the impeller. More deep understandings on the mechanism of the rotor–stator interaction are reached by decoupling the potential flow and wake disturbances. In this paper, the boundary discretization method is used to improve the traditional subdomain model. The improved model can be used to calculate the magnetic field distribution in the region containing non-orthogonal boundary, avoiding the influence of the simplified stator slot or permanent magnet shape on the results in calculating the motor magnetic field using the traditional subdomain model. In addition, the improved subdomain model can also be used to calculate the air-gap flux density when the rotor is eccentric, instead of segmenting the air-gap to an equivalent state without eccentricity. The calculation object of this paper is a surface-mount permanent magnet motor with a rectangular stator slot. The air-gap flux density under no-load and load conditions is calculated, respectively. Since the improved subdomain model does not need to simplify the stator slot shape, the magnetic potential in the stator slot is also calculated. Finally, the air-gap flux density under rotor eccentricity is calculated, and the influence of the calculating parameters on the results of the improved subdomain model is discussed. In this paper, the mechanism of the rotor–stator interaction in a centrifugal pump with guide vanes is studied numerically and theoretically. The dynamic mode decomposition method is employed to decouple and reconstruct the unsteady flow. A diametrical mode theory suitable for centrifugal pumps with guided vanes is proposed to determine the source of harmonics with higher amplitudes quickly. The results show that the dominant frequencies of the pressure pulsation in the volute and guide vanes are the blade passing frequency and its harmonic frequencies, and the corresponding flow structure is stable and has higher modal energy. The rotor–stator interaction effect around the impeller outlet is most pronounced. The potential flow effect works on the impeller and guide vanes but decays rapidly. The pressure pulsation caused by the wake effect propagates downstream and persists for long distances, which is the main reason for forming the modal pressure field in the volute. The modal reconstruction can reproduce the dynamic evolution process of the pressure field at the characteristic frequencies. The propagation characteristics of the modal pressure field in the volute can be accurately predicted by theoretical analysis. In comparison with the transverse vibrations of rectangular plates, far less attention has been paid to the in-plane vibrations even though they may play an equally important role in affecting the vibrations and power flows in a built-up structure. In this paper, a generalized Fourier method is presented for the in-plane vibration analysis of rectangular plates with any number of elastic point supports along the edges. Displacement constraints or rigid point supports can be considered as the special case when the stiffnesses of the supporting springs tend to infinity. In the current solution, each of the in-plane displacement components is expressed as a 2D Fourier series plus four auxiliary functions in the form of the product of a polynomial times a Fourier cosine series. These auxiliary functions are introduced to ensure and improve the convergence of the Fourier series solution by eliminating all the discontinuities potentially associated with the original displacements and their partial derivatives along the edges when they are periodically extended onto the entire x-y plane as mathematically implied by the Fourier series representation. This analytical solution is exact in the sense that it explicitly satisfies, to any specified accuracy, both the governing equations and the boundary conditions. Numerical examples are given about the in-plane modes of rectangular plates with different edge supports. It appears that these modal data are presented for the first time in literature, and may be used as a benchmark to evaluate other solution methodologies. In this paper, the coupling effect between the crankshaft torsional vibration and the low speed diesel engine block vibration is investigated. Using finite element method (FEM), a model of low speed diesel engine is established to study the vibration response. The mode results of FEM agree very well with the test. The additional torques acting on the low-speed diesel engine caused by torsional vibration are discussed in detail. The vibration response of the low-speed diesel engine considering the effect of torsional vibration is studied using FEM simulation. By analyzing the effect of torsional vibration, the results demonstrate that the crankshaft torsional vibrations have important effects on the engine block vibration. The textures on the bushing surface have important effects on the performance of journal bearing. In this study, the effects of double parabolic profiles with groove textures on the hydrodynamic lubrication performance of journal bearing under steady operating conditions are investigated theoretically. The journal misalignment, asperity contact and thermal effects are considered, while the profile modifications due to running-in are neglected. The Winkler/Column model is used to calculate the elastic deformation of bushing surface and the adiabatic flow hypothesis is adopted to obtain the effective temperature of lubricating oil. The numerical solution is established by using finite difference and overrelaxation iterative methods, and the rupture zone of oil film is determined by Reynolds boundary conditions. The numerical results reveal that the double parabolic profiles with groove textures with proper location and geometric sizes can increase load carrying capacity and reduce friction loss under steady operating conditions, which effectively overcome the drawbacks of double parabolic profiles. With the large-scale and complexity of ship propulsion shafting, it is more difficult to analyze and control the torsional vibration of shafting. Therefore, an effective control method for the torsional vibration of shafting is of great significance in the field of ship engineering. The main strategy of torsional vibration control adopted in this paper is to keep the natural frequency of a shaft system away from the excitation frequency through structural modifications. In addition, because the basic parameters of much of the equipment in engineering applications cannot be changed, this restriction cannot be ignored when seeking solutions related to structural modifications. This paper studies the partial eigenvalue assignment for the torsional vibration control of complex ship propulsion shafting using the gradient flow method, which can shift a "dangerous" natural frequency to a safe value, while satisfying complex physical constraints. The models of a ship propulsion system and a diesel generator set are established to demonstrate several different desired modification schemes and constraint conditions in practice. In particular, close frequencies are shifted. The numerical simulation results demonstrate that it is effective and feasible to make a partial frequency assignment of torsional vibration, which provides a reliable approach for the control of torsional vibration for complex shaft systems in practical engineering. A piston slap is one of the main vibration sources of the reciprocating machinery. Much work has been done in this field, most of which was based on a constant rotating speed. However, in practice, the speed of a crankshaft may always fluctuate due to the uneven load or excitation. The inertia forces of moving components are much different at the fluctuating rotating speed comparing with that at a constant speed. In this paper, the piston slap and the induced vibration are analyzed based on the instantaneous angular speed measured on a single-cylinder reciprocating compressor. Firstly, the dynamics of a crank-connecting rod mechanism is analyzed based on the measured instantaneous angular speed which contains the torsional vibration of the air compressor. The time histories of piston slap impact forces considering and without considering torsional vibration are compared. Then, in order to correlate the piston slap impact with the slap-induced vibration, the corresponding transfer functions between the middle stroke of the outer surface of the cylinder liner and the excitation points are measured. And the excitation force on the main bearing is also taken into account to bring the simulation closer to the experimental results. The effects of a torsional vibration on the vibration of the cylinder liner are analyzed, and the simulation results show that the torsional vibration is a factor that must be taken into account in the vibration analysis of the single-cylinder reciprocating compressor. This paper deals with reconstruction of excitation forces and analyses of the root causes of vibro-acoustic responses of an elastic structure by using nearfield acoustical holography and modal expansion theory. Derivations of formulations for reconstructing excitation forces, including distributed, line, and point forces, acting on the back side of a rectangular thin plate simply supported on an infinite, rigid baffle, are presented. The reason for choosing a baffled plate is that analytic solutions to vibro-acoustic responses are readily available, so the accuracy in reconstruction can be examined rigorously. For simplicity, the effect of fluid loading is neglected, and input data are assumed error-free. Numerical examples of reconstructing excitation forces are presented, and results agree very well with benchmark values. The impacts of various parameters, such as the ratio of measurement aperture versus plate size, microphone spacing, standoff distance, the number of natural modes, etc., on reconstruction accuracy are investigated. Needless to say, in practice such idealized scenario is nonexistent and the accuracy in reconstruction of excitation forces are severely compromised by measurement errors and interfering signals. In this paper, a method of measuring the relative torsional angles of the flexible coupling under working condition was developed. A double-encoder measurement system was proposed to get the torsional angles. The torsional angles were divided into “constant torsional angle” and “alternating torsional angle”. The measured results were analyzed further, which were applied to a series of flexible couplings. Firstly, the torsional stiffness of D-type flexible coupling was obtained according to the relationship between torques and torsional angles. The proposed method overcomes the difficulty that the angular displacements of flexible coupling cannot be measured online under operating condition. The feasibility and accuracy of the method developed in this study was verified by comparing stiffness curve with unloading curve obtained from static torsional experiment and values from factory inspection report. Furthermore, in view of the tear fault of A-type flexible coupling in a diesel generator set, the maximum alternating torsional angles of A-type, B-type, and C-type flexible couplings were measured under working condition, then safety margins were obtained for the diesel generator set. According to the safety margins of the three kinds of couplings, C-type flexible coupling is chosen to replace A-type, which provided the basis for type selection of flexible coupling. Vibration isolation systems are widely employed in automotive, marine, aerospace, and other engineering fields. Accurate input forces are of great significance for mechanical design, vibration prediction, and structure modification and optimization. One-stage vibration isolation system including engine, vibration isolators, and flexible supporting structure is modeled theoretically in this paper. Input excitation acting on the vibration isolation system is reconstructed using dynamic responses measured on engine and supporting structure under in-suit condition. The reconstructed forces reveal that dynamic responses on rigid body are likely to provide more accurate estimation results. Moreover, in order to improve the accuracy of excitation reconstructed by dynamic responses on flexible supporting structure, auto/cross-power spectral density function is utilized to reduce measurement noise. Torsional vibration of shafts is a very important problem in engineering, in particular in ship engines and aeroengines. Due to their high levels of integration and complexity, it is hard to get their accurate structural data or accurate modal data. This lack of data is unhelpful to vibration control in the form of structural modifications. Besides, many parts in shaft systems are not allowed to be modified such as rotary inertia of a pump or an engine, which is designed for achieving certain functions. This paper presents a strategy for torsional vibration control of shaft systems in the form of structural modifications based on receptances, which does not need analytical or modal models of the systems under investigation. It only needs the torsional receptances of the system, which can be obtained by testing simple auxiliary structure attached to relevant locations of the shaft system and using the finite element model (FEM) of the simple structure. An optimization problem is constructed to determine the required structural modifications, based on the actual requirements of modal frequencies and mode shapes. A numerical experiment is set up and the influence of several system parameters is analysed. Several scenarios of constraints in practice are considered. To analyze the torsional vibration of a diesel engine shaft, the torsional stiffness of the flexible coupling is a key kinetic parameter. Since the material properties of the elastic element of the coupling might change after a long-time operation due to the severe working environment or improper use and the variation of such properties will change dynamic feature of the coupling, it will cause a relative large calculation error of torsional vibration to the shaft system. Moreover, the torsional stiffness of the elastic coupling is difficult to be determined, and it is inappropriate to measure this parameter by disassembling the power unit while it is under normal operation. To solve these problems, this paper comes up with a method which combines the torsional vibration test with the calculation of the diesel shafting and uses the inherent characteristics of shaft torsional vibration to identify the dynamic stiffness of the elastic coupling without disassembling the unit. Analysis results show that it is reasonable and feasible to identify the elastic coupling dynamic torsional stiffness with this method and the identified stiffness is accurate. An improved Fourier expansion-based differential quadrature (DQ) algorithm is proposed to study the free vibration behavior of truncated conical shells with different boundary conditions. The original function is expressed as the Fourier cosine series combined with close-form auxiliary functions. Those auxiliary functions are introduced to ensure and accelerate the convergence of series expansion. The grid points are uniformly distributed along the space. The weighting coefficients in the DQ method are easily obtained by the inverse of the coefficient matrix. The derivatives in both the governing equations and the boundaries are discretized by the DQ method. Natural frequencies and modal shapes can be easily obtained by solving the numerical eigenvalue equations. The accuracy and stability of this proposed method are validated against the results in the literature and a very good agreement is observed. The centrosymmetric properties of these newly proposed weighting coefficients are also validated. Studies on the effects of semivertex angle and the ratio of length to radius are reported. In this article, a mixed lubrication model considering the oil supply quantity and a friction model under dry running condition were developed, in which an elasto-plastic contact model was employed in calculation of asperity contact forces and friction forces instead of the assumption of pure elastic contact. This model was verified to be suitable for calculating the friction forces of piston ring under different conditions on a reciprocating wear tester. The friction forces of piston ring pack were considered as an excitation source to calculate the crankshaft torsional vibration besides the exciting torques of gas pressure in the combustion chamber and inertia forces of reciprocation components. Furthermore, an experiment on a refitted single-cylinder air compressor was conducted to validate the change rule of torsional amplitudes under normal and scuffing failure conditions. The results showed that the friction forces between piston rings and cylinder liner in the mid-strokes under starved lubrication and dry running conditions increase obviously compared with those under fully flooded lubrication condition. It is reasonable to ignore the exciting torques due to friction forces of piston ring pack for calculating crankshaft torsional vibration under normal condition, and the torsional amplitudes at 2.0 order frequency increase obviously under slight and serious scuffing failure conditions. The result of experiment on a refitted single-cylinder air compressor also agrees with the above conclusion about torsional vibration. So, the change in torsional amplitude at 2.0 order frequency can be used as a referenced rule to identify scuffing failure for diesel engine through analyzing the signals of torsional vibration. Understanding the interaction between ring dynamics and gas transport in ring pack systems is crucial and needs to be imperatively studied. The present work features detailed interring gas dynamics of piston ring pack behavior in internal combustion engines. The model is developed for a ring pack with four rings. The dynamics of ring pack are simulated. Due to the fact that small changes in geometry of the grooves and lands would have a significant impact on the interring gas dynamics, the thermal deformation of piston has been considered during the ring pack motion analysis in this study. In order to get the temperature distribution of piston head more quickly and accurately, an efficient method utilizing the concept of inverse heat conduction is presented. A mixed-lubrication model considering the oil supply was developed. The elastoplastic model was applied in the asperity contact simulation. The oil-film thickness at the ring–cylinder liner interface was determined using a mass conservation algorithm. The modeling results were compared with experimental results for verification on a reciprocating wear tester. It is found that, under the fully flooded condition, the results of the Greenwood–Trip model and the current model in the middle of the stroke are in accordance with the experimental results, but the results of the current model at the ends of the stroke are closer to the experimental results than the Greenwood–Trip model results are. Under the starved-lubrication condition, the friction coefficient of the current method is closer to the experimental result than that of the Greenwood–Trip model in the entire stroke. Therefore, the model developed in this study is appropriate for mixed lubrication under the fully flooded condition and the starved-lubrication condition. Furthermore, the model was applied to the ring pack of a diesel engine to study the effect of the oil supply on the tribological performance. The results show that the frictional forces under the 1 μm oil supply condition are far larger than those under the sufficient oil supply condition in the middle of the stroke, and so the increase in the frictional force may be used to identify scuffing failure in future studies if the relationships between the frictional forces and the measured vibration signals of the engine are obtained. In this paper, an analytical technique, the so-called Fourier Spectral method (FSM), is extended to the vibration analysis of a rotating Rayleigh beam considering the gyroscopic effect. The model presented can have arbitrary boundary conditions specified in terms of elastic constraints in the translations and rotations or even in terms of attached lumped masses and inertias. Each displacement function is universally expressed as a linear combination of a standard Fourier cosine series and several supplementary functions introduced to ensure and accelerate the convergence of the series expansion. Lagrange's equation is established for all the unknown Fourier coefficients viewed as a set of independent generalized coordinates. A numerical model is constructed for the rotating beam. First, a numerical example considering simply supported boundary conditions at both ends is calculated and the results are compared with those of a published paper to show the accuracy and convergence of the proposed model. Then, the method is applied to one real work piece structure with elastically supported boundary conditions updated from the modal experiment results including both the frequencies and mode shapes using the method of least squares. Several numerical examples of the updated model are studied to show the effects of some parameters on the dynamic characteristics of the work piece subjected to moving loads at different constant velocities. A two-dimensional thermomechanical finite element model was developed to analyze the sliding process of a piston ring with coating sliding on cylinder liner under dry running condition. Thermal and mechanical effects were considered simultaneously in the model. The aim of the current work is to study the mechanisms of scuffing, failure, and seizure occurrence in a piston ring-liner system. It is shown that coating thickness plays an important role in the thermal and mechanical stress status at the contact area, coating bulk body, and interface of the coating and piston ring substrate. The coating thickness also exhibits a significant influence on the temperature rising at the contact area and interface of the ring coating and substrate, which could cause failure at the interface of the coating and substrate before it happens at the contact surface under some specific conditions. The results also show that thinner coating thickness in some specific range could have a higher possibility of cracking or failure. The break-out sound from a cavity via an elastically mounted panel is predicted in this paper. The vibroacoustic system model is derived based on the so-called spectro-geometric method in which the solution over each sub-domain is invariably expressed as a modified Fourier series expansion. Unlike the traditional modal superposition methods, the continuity of the normal velocities is faithfully enforced on the interfaces between the flexible panel and the (interior and exterior) acoustic media. A fully coupled vibro-acoustic system is obtained by taking into account the strong coupling between the vibration of the elastic panel and the sound fields on the both sides. The typical time-consuming calculations of quadruple integrals encountered in determining the sound power radiation from a panel has been effectively avoided by reducing them, via discrete cosine transform, into a number of single integrals which are subsequently calculated analytically in a closed form. Several numerical examples are presented to validate the system model, understand the effects on the sound transmissions of panel mounting conditions, and demonstrate the dependence on the size of source room of the "measured" transmission loss.
