The article presents the schedule of the 1967 American Institute of Biological Sciences (AIBS) meetings which will be conducted at the Memorial Student Center in Texas A&M University, College Station, Texas from August 27 to September 1, 1967 and the information about the food service, housing and field trips. AIBS will hold a Plenary Session on August 28 for all biologists attending the meetings where speakers will discuss those forms of environmental deterioration and quality loss that have been going on for a long time. A half-day symposium on remote sensing, which is being cosponsored by the AIBS and the Ecological Society of America, will be held during the meetings. Also, a special session has been planned for August 31, to enable AIBS members to present papers.

This article presents news and notices related to dermatology. Applications are invited from those wishing to be considered for inclusion in the Diploma in Dermatology Course commencing October 3, 1973. At the Annual General Meeting of Scottish Dermatological Society, some of the papers presented were the Effect of Enzyme Detergents on Insensible Water Loss, Clinical and Pathological Features of Prognostic Significance in the Presentation of Malignant Melanoma and Thermography in Relation to Dermatology. On the occasion of the XlVth International Congress of Dermatology in Vienna the Marchionini Prizes were awarded.

The purpose of tins study is to consider photoelectric plethysmometry (PEP) in the evaluation of Raynaud's Disorders. In a previous paper (1), we demonstrated the usefulness of thermography in similar conditions, but the cost of instrumentation was regarded as a deterrent to its widespread usefulness;. Historically, PEP has not been widely used medically, in spite of its apparent simplicity and low cost. Many of the problems were recognized early in the development of PEP, especially by Hertzmann (2). Frequent use has been made of the technique in psychology as has been reviewed by Weinman (3). Stimultaneous investigation of thermography and photoelectric plethysmometry has been reported by Wouda (4). In spite of a number of problems reviewed in the discussion which follows, it appears that the method shows sufficient promise to warrant further investigation. To suggest a more guarded attitude regarding the exact measurement recorded, the term plethylsmometry is used herein instead of a more usual, plethysmography. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article focuses on the Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS), an experiment in using remote sensing to monitor the biosphere. In its first year in orbit, ERTS has shown itself to be a practical tool for a wide range of special tasks including crop inventory, land-use mapping, volcano watch, oceanography, pollution detection and mineral resource discovery. Its return beam vidicon camera system reports changes in conditions on land, sea or ice. The vidicon camera is backed up by a multispectral scanner which scans the surface of mountains and valleys, deserts of sand and deserts of ice in four bands of the electromagnetic spectrum. The data collection system transmits information from unattended ground-based sensors in remote areas to National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

The article provides information on a study concerning the weather radar measurement of bird migration. It is known that radar becomes an important tool for the studies of bird migration. However, it is difficult to estimate bird densities from echo densities on the radar screen. The use of the Weather Bureau's new WSR-57 radar for bird migration research is also discussed. The shorter pulse of this radar has greater resolution but only detects birds when they are highly concentrated in the air. The fading of pulse radar signals reduces the number of perceptible returns because of the distribution of the numbers of targets among the radar.

The article focuses on the use of remote sensing for determining various ecological conditions. Remote sensing is a method of obtaining information about a particular geographic area through aerial cameras or other sensing devices that are situated at some distance from the area that is being studied. An image of a meadow in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California was formed on panchromatic film from an altitude of 5000 feet above the terrain. This remote sensing imagery revealed an abrupt transition between the meadow and the surrounding coniferous trees.

The article presents information related to infrared and multispectral sensing for biologists. It also depicts how the use of the scanning systems developed for infrared can be extended to provide a multispectral sensing system utilizing the infrared, visible, and ultraviolet regions in concert. As reported, despite availability of the variety of transmitting materials, reflective optics are most frequently used in the infrared at present. For some time, simultaneous imagery in as many as 20 different spectral bands distributed throughout the ultraviolet, visible, and infrared is being produced by the University of Michigan and this work has been done under U.S. Army and U.S. National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA) support.

Geologists increasingly concerned with detailed laboratory analyses at times overlook space-age techniques that promise the collection of valuable sedimentological data. Orbital remote sensing, and particularly space photography, can provide synoptic environmental data for geoscientists including those familiar with applying aerial photography to the analysis of sedimentary environments. Color space photographs obtained incident to the Gemini Program provide unique tools for analyzing sedimentary environments and processes and provide data that cannot be duplicated by conventional aerial photographic techniques. The principal advantages of orbital geoscience data collection include frequency of coverage leading to environmental analysis within the full spectrum of seasonal contrasts, and opportunities for environmental syntheses by synoptic observations. Gemini space photography is an available source of semi-quantitative data concerning changing environmental phenomena and mechanisms of sediment distribution. It also enables the survey and inventory of global sedimentary landforms. With the application of advanced sensors, increased system resolution, and repetitious photographic coverage, speedier and more reliable quantitative sedimentological analyses can be performed. Examination of representative and recently declassified samples of imagery from the type of radar developed especially for reconnaissance and mapping purposes by the military, the Side-Looking Airborne Radar ("SLAB"), indicates that SLAB images look very much like medium-grade aerial photos and will serve the following types of geographic tasks even better. 1) Tasks which require an overview of subcontinental magnitude. 2) Tasks which require an overview in which careful timing is critical. 3) Tasks which require an overview with maximum economy of time and money.

The article presents information on the two Nobel Prize winners Edward Appleton and Robert Robinson in the United States. Both men are from the North country from which they have drawn various characteristics. Appleton works in elucidating how wireless waves travel made long distance radio communication the precision method for up-to-the minute international contact and led to the development of radar. Appleton is head of the Government organization which is responsible for the applications of science to national needs. Appleton's work has been noticed mainly in the United States where the signal honor of the Medal of Merit was given him for his early work on radar and for his services. Robinson has always held academical appointments, being Professor in Sydney, Australia and several British Universities. Robinson discovered a simple synthesis for tropinone, a substance that can be obtained from and converted into the plant alkaloids atropine and cocaine.

This article focuses on the land use pattern in the Southwestern U.S. Research on the potential applications of hyperaltitude photography and land use mapping of the southwestern U.S. are part of a continuing program of studies in remote sensing being carried out at the Department of Geography, University of California, Los Angeles. The current remote sensing research which has led to the production of the Southwestern Land Use Map is part of the larger Earth Resources Survey Program which was initiated several years ago as a result of the rapid advancement by the U.S. in its space program.
