The article discusses a study which investigated the flora of paper-mill lime waste dumps near Glasgow, Scotland. The topography and description of the lime dumps on which the current work is being conducted is presented. The constituents of the lime dumps come from the accumulation of all the refuse from the paper mills for a period of 6 to 7 years and contains mud and a large variety of substances, such as old beltings and boots. A chart is presented which shows an analysis of the substances found in the area.

It is the purpose of this paper to look more closely than has so far been done at the influence of highland questions in Glasgow politics in the 1880's, and to set this against the background of highland migration to Glasgow and the development of socialism generally in industrial Scotland. This article focuses on the thirty-ninth Annual Meeting of the British Association of Dermatology which was held in Glasgow on July 9, 10 and 11, 1959, under the Presidency of physician J. Ferguson Smith and Vice-Presidency of physician James Sommerville. The scientific programme began with a series of papers on malignant disease of the face and mouth. Professor E.J. Wayne described the main actions of the compounds in general and the particular properties of the more recently introduced drugs. During the scientific sessions, an exhibition was held in an adjoining laboratory, demonstrating the skill and artistry of the clinical and microscopical photography.

Let us begin with a brief review of the main documents which Scott had before him when he wrote his monumental Adam Smith as Student and Professor,[1] and the main assumptions which he made concerning their dates. First, there were "four documents, amounting to fifteen folio pages" which Scott discovered "amongst letters kept by Adam Smith.''[2] One of these documents, as Scott himself indicated, is very probably not by Smith, but a copy of a paper on prices which he had received from Lord Hailes.[3] A second, on moral philosophy, has recently been edited by Professor Raphael, who has quite properly questioned Scott's judgment as to date of composition, while indicating that it was probably written before the first edition of the Theory of Moral Sentiments in 1759.[4] The two remaining documents--the really relevant ones so far as the present article is concerned--deal more or less exclusively with the division of labour, and were thought by [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A conference paper about the annual course of drought and heat resistance of heat plants from an oceanic environment is presented. It presents the results of a study which investigated four heath species during the period February 1967-February 1968 at a site to the north of Glasgow, Scotland. The investigation was also carried out to examine the relationship between resistance phenomena and the geographical distribution of these plants.

Century ago, physicians experienced qualms at being confronted with an overwhelming amount of new material and an unbelieving sense of inadequacy. Despite this, the idea of specialization was quite foreign to most medical people of the time. T. McCall Anderson, professor of clinical medicine at the University of Glasgow in Glasgow, Scotland, called attention to such rapid developments in dermatology. Dermatologists' specialty had progressed from an appendage to the chest ward to a medical discipline worthy of note. In fact Anderson already had developed dermatology services of his own at the Royal Dispensary, as well as at the Glasgow Skin Dispensary.

The remarkable persistence of the localities has been noted by urban sociologists; indeed, it could be said that there has been an institutionalization of inequities in certain localities in cities. There were, until 1971, three categories of Corporation housing estate in Glasgow, constructed according to the provisions of what can be seen as three sets of Scottish Housing Acts. The Acts of 1930 and 1935 were specifically aimed at the clearance of Scotland's notorious slums. The key problem with Glasgow's slums, apart from their physical condition, was that they were grossly over!crowded due to the fact that they were made up of very small houses. In one sense, the slum clearance estates have replaced the very slums whose problems they were meant to eradicate; they contain the detritus of capitalism, the manual working-class family with low occupational skills, whose problems tend to get swept under the carpet or hidden in a corner. Slum-dwellers and slum-clearees in Glasgow were seldom given the benefit of the doubt. They were by-and-large viewed as deviants who had to be controlled.

The article measures leadership in two groups of contrasting socio-economic status and examines the relationship between the sociometric measure of leadership and various mental, physical and personality factors. The groups investigated consisted on the one hand of a class of second year pupils from one of the best fee paying secondary schools in Glasgow, Scotland and on the other of a class from one of the toughest junior secondary schools in Glasgow. The trait description of the leader that emerges from this study does not appear to be affected by the difference in socio-economic status between the groups. The effort to discover the traits that distinguish leaders from other members of the group has been disappointing. It is also important to note that leadership is situational. Sociologist C.A. Gibb in his survey of the literature in this field states reveal that numerous studies of the personalities of leaders have failed to find any consistent pattern of traits which characterises leaders. Gibb holds the view that leadership traits may exist, but if they do, they have not been recognised. In essence, the results of this investigation indicate that an approach based on the individual should be replaced by the group approach to the problem of leadership.

A survey of dermatological out-patients in 2 large Glasgow hospitals from 1955-64 Is reported. The incidence of common diseases is analyzed in detail and changes in incidence are indicated and discussed. Earlier surveys in Glasgow and comparable recent surveys In other cities are reviewed. The article focuses on the failure of the city of the Glasgow bank. Recent bank closings recall the history of the City of Glasgow Bank, which closed its doors a little over half a century ago. The last balance sheet published before the closing was dated June 5, 1878, and indicated capital reserves and undistributed profits totaling £1,600,000. The accountants' examination, made immediately after the closing of the bank, three months later, revealed that the capital and reserves were entirely wiped out, and that there was a deficiency of capital estimated at the astounding figure of £5,190,000. The immediate arrest of the bank's directors was ordered. During the five years preceding the dosing of the bank, between fifty and sixty percent of the total of advances on credits, discounts and overdrafts represented the debt of eight firms and the bank's directors. The City Bank failure once more brought up the question of the desirability of the acceptance by the Scotch bank of the principle of limited liability to stockholders as a measure of protection against disastrous situations comparable to that resulting from the City Bank failure.

This article examines the standard of living in Glasgow, Scotland in the 19th century based on the published works of census-taker James Cleland. The author here presents a cost-of-living index for an important industrial centre, using local retail price information. According to the author, there are several problems associated with the use of Cleland's data. One of them is that, a realistic index cannot be calculated without a systematic adjustment of the quantities in which the commodities were expressed. Cleland merely quoted the price of each item in its basic unit of measurement, and it is essential to obtain quantities consistent with consumption over a given period. The author remarks that the determination of consumption weights raises the familiar difficulties of estimating diet, levels of consumption, and the proportion of income devoted to particular goods, problems which have long been a matter of both conjecture and controversy. The problem of determining the relative consumption of white and brown bread is almost insuperable.

The article focuses on British urban redevelopment with special reference to Glasgow, Scotland. In the middle of the nineteenth century the ancient heart of Glasgow with its Mercat Cross, its Cathedral and its University was, despite its former distinction, at least as debased as the center of any great British town. Although the population had increased five-fold between 1801 and 1861, the whole of the Glasgow of 1775 remained geographically intact. There was, in the center of this rapidly expanding conurbation a medieval city, covering about 100 acres with narrow winding ill-paved streets which were quite unsuited to the requirements of an industrial city. The central business district, including the new City Chambers, had moved west, and much of the new industry had fanned out along both sides of the River Clyde and to the north. The middle classes had moved west, leaving the declining areas to the poorest classes. Virtually no demolition took place, and indeed the demand for cheap dwellings was so great that former middle-class gardens were filled with jerry-built back-tenements.

Ramsay is completing an analysis of unemployment in Greenock, a high-unemployment areas in Scotland.

The article presents a list of social sciences studies which will be published in the June 1962 issue of the journal. The first is the work "Case Studies in European Economic Union," edited and introduced by Professor James Meade. This is concerned with the problems encountered in the Benelux Union and the Coal and Steel Community. The second is the study of trade between the developed countries of Western Europe and its relation to economic growth, which is duly undertaken by the Royal Institute of International Affairs.
