The research groups in computer vision, graphics, and machine learning have dedicated a substantial amount of attention to the areas of 3D object reconstruction, augmentation, and registration. Deep learning is the predominant method used in artificial intelligence for addressing computer vision challenges. However, deep learning on three-dimensional data presents distinct obstacles and is now in its nascent phase. There have been significant advancements in deep learning specifically for three-dimensional data, offering a range of ways to address these issues. This study offers a comprehensive examination of the latest advancements in deep learning methodologies. We examine many benchmark models for the tasks of 3D object registration, augmentation, and reconstruction. We thoroughly analyse their architectures, advantages, and constraints. In summary, this report provides a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in three-dimensional deep learning and highlights unresolved research areas that will need to be addressed in the future. This paper is on the autonomous detection of humans in off-limits mountains. In off-limits mountains, a human rarely exists, thus human detection is an extremely rare event. Due to the advances in artificial intelligence, object detection–classification algorithms based on a Convolution Neural Network (CNN) can be used for this application. However, considering off-limits mountains, there should be no person in general. Thus, it is not desirable to run object detection–classification algorithms continuously, since they are computationally heavy. This paper addresses a time-efficient human detector system, based on both motion detection and object classification. The proposed scheme is to run a motion detection algorithm from time to time. In the camera image, we define a feasible human space where a human can appear. Once motion is detected inside the feasible human space, one enables the object classification, only inside the bounding box where motion is detected. Since motion detection inside the feasible human space runs much faster than an object detection–classification method, the proposed approach is suitable for real-time human detection with low computational loads. As far as we know, no paper in the literature used the feasible human space, as in our paper. The outperformance of our human detector system is verified by comparing it with other state-of-the-art object detection–classification algorithms (HOG detector, YOLOv7 and YOLOv7-tiny) under experiments. This paper demonstrates that the accuracy of the proposed human detector system is comparable to other state-of-the-art algorithms, while outperforming in computational speed. This paper addresses issues concerning biometric authentication based on handwritten signatures. Our research aimed to check whether a handwritten signature acquired with a mobile device can effectively verify a user's identity. We present a novel online signature verification method using coordinates of points and pressure values at each point collected with a mobile device. Convolutional neural networks are used for signature verification. In this paper, three neural network models are investigated, i.e., two self-made light SigNet and SigNetExt models and the VGG-16 model commonly used in image processing. The convolutional neural networks aim to determine whether the acquired signature sample matches the class declared by the signer. Thus, the scenario of closed set verification is performed. The effectiveness of our method was tested on signatures acquired with mobile phones. We used the subset of the multimodal database, MobiBits, that was captured using a custom-made application and consists of samples acquired from 53 people of diverse ages. The experimental results on accurate data demonstrate that developed architectures of deep neural networks can be successfully used for online handwritten signature verification. The rising interest in Artificial Intelligence and the increasing time invested in functional verification processes are driving the demand for AI solutions in this field. Functional verification is the process of verifying that the Register Transfer Layer (RTL) implementation behaves according to the specifications provided. This is performed using a hardware verification language (HVL) such as SystemVerilog combined with the Universal Verification Methodology (UVM). Reading, identifying the key elements from multiple documentations, creating the verification plan, building the verification environment, implementing the tests defined, and achieving 100% coverage are usually the steps performed in order to complete the verification process. The verification process is considered finalized when functional coverage is at 100%. There are multiple ideas on how the process can be aided by AI, such as underlining the essential information from documentation, which would help in understanding faster how the Register Transfer Layer implementation works, thus vastly reducing time. In this paper, to greatly reduce the time spent on functional verification, two Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) architectures are implemented to properly classify the information across different documents; both approaches have significant and promising results. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence, computer vision techniques have been successfully applied to concrete defect diagnosis in bridge structural health monitoring. To enhance the accuracy of identifying the location and type of concrete defects (cracks, exposed bars, spalling, efflorescence and voids), this paper proposes improvements to the existing Mask Region Convolution Neural Network (Mask R-CNN). The improvements are as follows: (i) The residual network (ResNet101), the backbone network of Mask R-CNN which has too many convolution layers, is replaced by the lightweight network MobileNetV2. This can solve the problem that the large number of parameters leads to a slow training speed of the model, and improve the ability to extract features of smaller targets. (ii) Embedding attention mechanism modules in Feature Pyramid Networks (FPNs) to better extract the target features. (iii) A path aggregation network (PANet) is added to solve the problem that the model Mask R-CNN lacks the ability to extract shallow layer feature information. To validate the superiority of the proposed improved Mask R-CNN, the multi-class concrete defect image dataset was constructed, and using the K-means clustering algorithm to determine the aspect ratio of the most suitable prior bounding box for the dataset. Following, the identification results of improved Mask-RCNN, original Mask-RCNN and other mainstream deep learning networks on five types of concrete defects (cracks, exposed bars, spalling, efflorescence and voids) in the dataset were compared. Finally, the intelligent identification system for concrete defects has been established by innovatively combining images taken by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with our improved defect identification model. The reinforced concrete bridge defects images collected by UAVs were used as test set for testing. The result is the improved Mask R-CNN with superior accuracy, and the identification accuracy is higher than the original Mask-RCNN and other deep learning networks. The improved Mask-RCNN can identify the new untrained concrete defects images taken by UAVs, and the identification accuracy can meet the requirements of bridge structural health monitoring. Deep learning, a crucial technique for achieving artificial intelligence (AI), has been successfully applied in many fields. The gradual application of the latest architectures of deep learning in the field of time series forecasting (TSF), such as Transformers, has shown excellent performance and results compared to traditional statistical methods. These applications are widely present in academia and in our daily lives, covering many areas including forecasting electricity consumption in power systems, meteorological rainfall, traffic flow, quantitative trading, risk control in finance, sales operations and price predictions for commercial companies, and pandemic prediction in the medical field. Deep learning-based TSF tasks stand out as one of the most valuable AI scenarios for research, playing an important role in explaining complex real-world phenomena. However, deep learning models still face challenges: they need to deal with the challenge of large-scale data in the information age, achieve longer forecasting ranges, reduce excessively high computational complexity, etc. Therefore, novel methods and more effective solutions are essential. In this paper, we review the latest developments in deep learning for TSF. We begin by introducing the recent development trends in the field of TSF and then propose a new taxonomy from the perspective of deep neural network models, comprehensively covering articles published over the past five years. We also organize commonly used experimental evaluation metrics and datasets. Finally, we point out current issues with the existing solutions and suggest promising future directions in the field of deep learning combined with TSF. Diseases of tomato leaves can seriously damage crop yield and financial rewards. The timely and accurate detection of tomato diseases is a major challenge in agriculture. Hence, the early and accurate diagnosis of tomato diseases is crucial. The emergence of deep learning has dramatically helped in plant disease detection. However, the accuracy of deep learning models largely depends on the quantity and quality of training data. To solve the inter-class imbalance problem and improve the generalization ability of the classification model, this paper proposes a cycle-consistent generative-adversarial-network-based Transformer model to generate diseased tomato leaf images for data augmentation. In addition, this paper uses a Transformer model and densely connected CNN architecture to extract multilevel local features. The Transformer module is utilized to capture global dependencies and contextual information accurately to expand the sensory field of the model. Experiments show that the proposed model achieved 99.45% accuracy on the PlantVillage dataset. The 2018 Artificial Intelligence Challenger dataset and the private dataset attained accuracies of 98.30% and 95.4%, and the proposed classification model achieved a higher accuracy and smaller model size compared to previous deep learning models. In the field of behavioral detection, deep learning has been extensively utilized. For example, deep learning models have been utilized to detect and classify malware. Deep learning, however, has vulnerabilities that can be exploited with crafted inputs, resulting in malicious files being misclassified. Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) may be compromised by malicious files, which can have catastrophic consequences. This paper presents a method for classifying Windows portable executables (PEs) using Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs) and Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs). To generate malware executable adversarial examples of PE, we conduct two white-box attacks, Jacobian-based Saliency Map Attack (JSMA) and Carlini and Wagner attack (C&W). An adversarial payload was injected into the DOS header, and a section was added to the file to preserve the PE functionality. The attacks successfully evaded the CNN model with a 91% evasion rate, whereas the RNN model evaded attacks at an 84.6% rate. Two defense mechanisms based on distillation and training techniques are examined in this study for overcoming adversarial example challenges. Distillation and training against JSMA resulted in the highest reductions in the evasion rates of 48.1% and 41.49%, respectively. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have demonstrated significant superiority in modern artificial intelligence (AI) applications. To accelerate the inference process of CNNs, reconfigurable CNN accelerators that support diverse networks are widely employed for AI systems. Given the ubiquitous deployment of these AI systems, there is a growing concern regarding the security of CNN accelerators and the potential attacks they may face, including hardware Trojans. This paper proposes a hardware Trojan designed to attack a crucial component of FPGA-based CNN accelerators: the reconfigurable interconnection network. Specifically, the hardware Trojan alters the data paths during activation, resulting in incorrect connections in the arithmetic circuit and consequently causing erroneous convolutional computations. To address this issue, the paper introduces a novel detection technique based on physically unclonable functions (PUFs) to safeguard the reconfigurable interconnection network against hardware Trojan attacks. Experimental results demonstrate that by incorporating a mere 0.27% hardware overhead to the accelerator, the proposed hardware Trojan can degrade the inference accuracy of popular neural network architectures, including LeNet, AlexNet, and VGG, by a significant range of 8.93% to 86.20%. The implemented arbiter-PUF circuit on a Xilinx Zynq XC7Z100 platform successfully detects the presence and location of hardware Trojans in a reconfigurable interconnection network. This research highlights the vulnerability of reconfigurable CNN accelerators to hardware Trojan attacks and proposes a promising detection technique to mitigate potential security risks. In response to the rapid advancements in facial manipulation technologies, particularly facilitated by Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) and Stable Diffusion-based methods, this paper explores the critical issue of deepfake content creation. The increasing accessibility of these tools necessitates robust detection methods to curb potential misuse. In this context, this paper investigates the potential of Vision Transformers (ViTs) for effective deepfake image detection, leveraging their capacity to extract global features. Objective: The primary goal of this study is to assess the viability of ViTs in detecting multiclass deepfake images compared to traditional Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)-based models. By framing the deepfake problem as a multiclass task, this research introduces a novel approach, considering the challenges posed by Stable Diffusion and StyleGAN2. The objective is to enhance understanding and efficacy in detecting manipulated content within a multiclass context. The latest survey results show an increase in accidents on the roads involving pedestrians and cyclists. The reasons for such situations are many, the fault actually lies on both sides. Equipping vehicles, especially autonomous vehicles, with frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar and dedicated algorithms for analyzing signals in the time–frequency domain as well as algorithms for recognizing objects in radar imaging through deep neural networks can positively affect safety. This paper presents a method for recognizing and distinguishing a group of objects based on radar signatures of objects and a special convolutional neural network structure. The proposed approach is based on a database of radar signatures generated on pedestrian, cyclist, and car models in a Matlab environment. The obtained results of simulations and positive tests provide a basis for the application of the system in many sectors and areas of the economy. SDN has the ability to transform network design by providing increased versatility and effective regulation. Its programmable centralized controller gives network administration employees more authority, allowing for more seamless supervision. However, centralization makes it vulnerable to a variety of attack vectors, with distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks posing a serious concern. Feature selection-based Machine Learning (ML) techniques are more effective than traditional signature-based Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) at identifying new threats in the context of defending against distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks. In this study, NGBoost is compared with four additional machine learning (ML) algorithms: convolutional neural network (CNN), Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD), Decision Tree, and Random Forest, in order to assess the effectiveness of DDoS detection on the CICDDoS2019 dataset. It focuses on important measures such as F1 score, recall, accuracy, and precision. We have examined NeTBIOS, a layer-7 attack, and SYN, a layer-4 attack, in our paper. Our investigation shows that Natural Gradient Boosting and Convolutional Neural Networks, in particular, show promise with tabular data categorization. The applications of deep learning and artificial intelligence have permeated daily life, with time series prediction emerging as a focal area of research due to its significance in data analysis. The evolution of deep learning methods for time series prediction has progressed from the Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) and the Recurrent Neural Network (RNN) to the recently popularized Transformer network. However, each of these methods has encountered specific issues. Recent studies have questioned the effectiveness of the self-attention mechanism in Transformers for time series prediction, prompting a reevaluation of approaches to LTSF (Long Time Series Forecasting) problems. To circumvent the limitations present in current models, this paper introduces a novel hybrid network, Temporal Convolutional Network-Linear (TCN-Linear), which leverages the temporal prediction capabilities of the Temporal Convolutional Network (TCN) to enhance the capacity of LSTF-Linear. Time series from three classical chaotic systems (Lorenz, Mackey–Glass, and Rossler) and real-world stock data serve as experimental datasets. Numerical simulation results indicate that, compared to classical networks and novel hybrid models, our model achieves the lowest RMSE, MAE, and MSE with the fewest training parameters, and its R2 value is the closest to 1. Accurately predicting the long-term trajectory of a surface drifting buoy (SDB) is challenging. This paper proposes a promising solution to the SDB trajectory prediction based on artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. Initially, a scalable mathematical model for trajectory prediction is developed, transforming the challenge of predicting trajectory points into predicting velocities in eastward and northward directions. Subsequently, a four-layer trajectory prediction calculation framework (FLTPCF) is established, outlining a complete workflow for the real-time online training of marine environment data and SDBs' trajectory prediction. Thirdly, for facilitating accurate long-term trajectory prediction, a hybrid artificial neural network trajectory prediction model, named CNN–BiGRU–Attention, integrates a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN), Bidirectional Gated Recurrent Unit (BiGRU), and Attention mechanism (AM), tuned for spatiotemporal feature extraction and extended time-series reasoning. Extensive experiments, including ablation studies, comparative analyses with state-of-the-art models like BiLSTM and Transformer, evaluations against numerical methods, and adaptability tests, were conducted for justifying the CNN–BiGRU–Attention model. The results highlight the CNN–BiGRU–Attention model's excellent convergence, accuracy, and generalization capabilities in predicting 24, 48, and 72 h trajectories for SDBs with varying drogue statuses and under different sea conditions. In this paper, we present a pedestrian detection and avoidance scheme utilizing multi-sensor data collection and machine learning for intelligent transportation systems (ITSs). The system integrates a video camera, an infrared (IR) camera, and a micro-Doppler radar for data acquisition and training. A deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) is employed to process RGB and IR images. The RGB dataset comprises 1200 images (600 with pedestrians and 600 without), while the IR dataset includes 1000 images (500 with pedestrians and 500 without), 85% of which were captured at night. Two distinct DCNNs were trained using these datasets, achieving a validation accuracy of 99.6% with the RGB camera and 97.3% with the IR camera. The radar sensor determines the pedestrian's range and direction of travel. Experimental evaluations conducted in a vehicle demonstrated that the multi-sensor detection scheme effectively triggers a warning signal to a vibrating motor on the steering wheel and displays a warning message on the passenger's touchscreen computer when a pedestrian is detected in potential danger. Urban tree classification enables informed decision-making processes in urban planning and management. This paper introduces a novel data reformation method, pseudo tree crown (PTC), which enhances the feature difference in the input layer and results in the improvement of the accuracy and efficiency of urban tree classification by utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) techniques. The study involved a comparative analysis of the performance of various machine learning (ML) classifiers. The results revealed a significant enhancement in classification accuracy, with an improvement exceeding 10% observed when high spatial resolution imagery captured by an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) was utilized. Furthermore, the study found an impressive average classification accuracy of 93% achieved by a classifier built on the PyTorch framework, with ResNet50 leveraged as its convolutional neural network layer. Power load prediction is fundamental for ensuring the reliability of power grid operation and the accuracy of power demand forecasting. However, the uncertainties stemming from power generation, such as wind speed and water flow, along with variations in electricity demand, present new challenges to existing power load prediction methods. In this paper, we propose an improved Convolutional Neural Network–Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (CNN-BILSTM) model for analyzing power load in systems affected by uncertain power conditions. Initially, we delineate the uncertainty characteristics inherent in real-world power systems and establish a data-driven power load model based on fluctuations in power source loads. Building upon this foundation, we design the CNN-BILSTM model, which comprises a convolutional neural network (CNN) module for extracting features from power data, along with a forward Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) module and a reverse LSTM module. The two LSTM modules account for factors influencing forward and reverse power load timings in the entire power load data, thus enhancing model performance and data utilization efficiency. We further conduct comparative experiments to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed CNN-BILSTM model. The experimental results demonstrate that CNN-BILSTM can effectively and more accurately predict power loads within power systems characterized by uncertain power generation and electricity demand. The typical Integrated Circuit (IC) development process commences with formulating specifications in natural language and subsequently proceeds to Register Transfer Level (RTL) implementation. RTL code is traditionally generated through manual efforts, using Hardware Description Languages (HDL) such as VHDL or Verilog. High-Level Synthesis (HLS), on the other hand, converts programming languages to HDL; these methods aim to streamline the engineering process, minimizing human effort and errors. Currently, Electronic Design Automation (EDA) algorithms have been improved with the use of AI, with new advancements in commercial (such as ChatGPT, Bard, among others) Large Language Models (LLM) and open-source tools presenting an opportunity to automate the chip design process. This paper centers on the creation of AI by AI, a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) IC entirely developed by an LLM (ChatGPT-4), and its manufacturing with the first fabricable open-source Process Design Kit (PDK), SKY130A. Maritime traffic is increasing more and more, creating more complex navigation environments for ships. Ship trajectory prediction based on historical AIS data is a vital method of reducing navigation risks and enhancing the efficiency of maritime traffic control. At present, employing machine learning or deep learning techniques to construct predictive models based on AIS data has become a focal point in ship trajectory prediction research. This paper systematically evaluates various trajectory prediction methods, spanning classical machine learning approaches and emerging deep learning techniques, to uncover their respective merits and drawbacks. In this work, a variety of studies were investigated that applied different algorithms in ship trajectory prediction, including regression models (RMs), artificial neural networks (ANNs), Kalman filtering (KF), and random forests (RFs) in machine learning, along with deep learning such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), recurrent neural networks (RNNs), long short-term memory (LSTM), gate recurrent unit (GRU) networks, and sequence-to-sequence (Seq2seq) networks. The performance of predictive models based on different algorithms in trajectory prediction tasks was graded and analyzed. Among the existing studies, deep learning methods exhibit significant performance and considerable potential application value for maritime traffic systems, which can be assessed by future work on ship trajectory prediction research. During the last decade, the cybersecurity literature has conferred a high-level role to machine learning as a powerful security paradigm to recognise malicious software in modern anti-malware systems. However, a non-negligible limitation of machine learning methods used to train decision models is that adversarial attacks can easily fool them. Adversarial attacks are attack samples produced by carefully manipulating the samples at the test time to violate the model integrity by causing detection mistakes. In this paper, we analyse the performance of five realistic target-based adversarial attacks, namely Extend, Full DOS, Shift, FGSM padding + slack and GAMMA, against two machine learning models, namely MalConv and LGBM, learned to recognise Windows Portable Executable (PE) malware files. Specifically, MalConv is a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model learned from the raw bytes of Windows PE files. LGBM is a Gradient-Boosted Decision Tree model that is learned from features extracted through the static analysis of Windows PE files. Notably, the attack methods and machine learning models considered in this study are state-of-the-art methods broadly used in the machine learning literature for Windows PE malware detection tasks. In addition, we explore the effect of accounting for adversarial attacks on securing machine learning models through the adversarial training strategy. Therefore, the main contributions of this article are as follows: (1) We extend existing machine learning studies that commonly consider small datasets to explore the evasion ability of state-of-the-art Windows PE attack methods by increasing the size of the evaluation dataset. (2) To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to carry out an exploratory study to explain how the considered adversarial attack methods change Windows PE malware to fool an effective decision model. Lung cancer, a prevalent and life-threatening condition, necessitates early detection for effective intervention. Considering the recent advancements in deep learning techniques, particularly in medical image analysis, which offer unparalleled accuracy and efficiency, in this paper, we propose a method for the automated identification of cancerous cells in lung tissue images. We explore various deep learning architectures with the objective of identifying the most effective one based on both quantitative and qualitative assessments. In particular, we assess qualitative outcomes by incorporating the concept of prediction explainability, enabling the visualization of areas within tissue images deemed relevant to the presence of lung cancer by the model. The experimental analysis, conducted on a dataset comprising 15,000 lung tissue images, demonstrates the effectiveness of our proposed method, yielding an accuracy rate of 0.99. Fire chemical sensing for indoor detection of fire plays an essential role because it can detect chemical volatiles before smoke particles, providing a faster and more reliable method for early fire detection. A thermal imaging camera and seven distinct fire-detecting sensors were used simultaneously to acquire the multimodal fire data that is the subject of this paper. The low-cost sensors typically have lower sensitivity and reliability, making it impossible for them to detect fire at greater distances. To go beyond the limitation of using solely sensors for identifying fire, the multimodal dataset is collected using a thermal camera that can detect temperature changes. The proposed pipeline uses image data from thermal cameras to train convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and their many versions. The training of sensors data (from fire sensors) uses bidirectional long-short memory (BiLSTM-Dense) and dense and long-short memory (LSTM-DenseDenseNet201), and the merging of both datasets demonstrates the performance of multimodal data. Researchers and system developers can use the dataset to create and hone cutting-edge artificial intelligence models and systems. Initial evaluation of the image dataset has shown densenet201 as the best approach with the highest validation parameters (0.99, 0.99, 0.99, and 0.08), i.e., Accuracy, Precision, Recall, and Loss, respectively. However, the sensors dataset has also shown the highest parameters with the BILSTM-Dense approach (0.95, 0.95, 0.95, 0.14). In a multimodal data approach, image and sensors deployed with a multimodal algorithm (densenet201 for image data and Bi LSTM- Dense for Sensors Data) has shown other parameters (1.0, 1.0, 1.0, 0.06). This paper introduces an AI-based approach to detect human-made objects and changes in these on land parcels. To this end, we used binary image classification performed by a convolutional neural network. Binary classification requires the selection of a decision boundary, and we provided a deterministic method for this selection. Furthermore, we varied different parameters to improve the performance of our approach, leading to a true positive rate of 91.3% and a true negative rate of 63.0%. A specific application of our work supports the administration of agricultural land parcels eligible for subsidiaries. Neuroimaging experts in biotech industries can benefit from using cutting-edge artificial intelligence techniques for Alzheimer's disease (AD)- and dementia-stage prediction, even though it is difficult to anticipate the precise stage of dementia and AD. Therefore, we propose a cutting-edge, computer-assisted method based on an advanced deep learning algorithm to differentiate between people with varying degrees of dementia, including healthy, very mild dementia, mild dementia, and moderate dementia classes. In this paper, four separate models were developed for classifying different dementia stages: convolutional neural networks (CNNs) built from scratch, pre-trained VGG16 with additional convolutional layers, graph convolutional networks (GCNs), and CNN-GCN models. The CNNs were implemented, and then the flattened layer output was fed to the GCN classifier, resulting in the proposed CNN-GCN architecture. A total of 6400 whole-brain magnetic resonance imaging scans were obtained from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative database to train and evaluate the proposed methods. We applied the 5-fold cross-validation (CV) technique for all the models. We presented the results from the best fold out of the five folds in assessing the performance of the models developed in this study. Hence, for the best fold of the 5-fold CV, the above-mentioned models achieved an overall accuracy of 43.83%, 71.17%, 99.06%, and 100%, respectively. Early detection of plant leaf diseases is a major necessity for controlling the spread of infections and enhancing the quality of food crops. Recently, plant disease detection based on deep learning approaches has achieved better performance than current state-of-the-art methods. Hence, this paper utilized a convolutional neural network (CNN) to improve rice leaf disease detection efficiency. We present a modified YOLOv8, which replaces the original Box Loss function by our proposed combination of EIoU loss and α -IoU loss in order to improve the performance of the rice leaf disease detection system. A two-stage approach is proposed to achieve a high accuracy of rice leaf disease identification based on AI (artificial intelligence) algorithms. In the first stage, the images of rice leaf diseases in the field are automatically collected. Afterward, these image data are separated into blast leaf, leaf folder, and brown spot sets, respectively. In the second stage, after training the YOLOv8 model on our proposed image dataset, the trained model is deployed on IoT devices to detect and identify rice leaf diseases. In order to assess the performance of the proposed approach, a comparative study between our proposed method and the methods using YOLOv7 and YOLOv5 is conducted. The experimental results demonstrate that the accuracy of our proposed model in this research has reached up to 89.9% on the dataset of 3175 images with 2608 images for training, 326 images for validation, and 241 images for testing. Melanoma is a highly prevalent and lethal form of skin cancer, which has a significant impact globally. The chances of recovery for melanoma patients substantially improve with early detection. Currently, deep learning (DL) methods are gaining popularity in assisting with the identification of diseases using medical imaging. The paper introduces a computational model for classifying melanoma skin cancer images using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and vision transformers (ViT) with the HAM10000 dataset. Both approaches utilize mask-guided techniques, employing a specialized U2-Net segmentation module to generate masks. The CNN-based approach utilizes ResNet50, VGG16, and Xception with transfer learning. The training process is enhanced using a Bayesian hyperparameter tuner. Moreover, this study applies gradient-weighted class activation mapping (Grad-CAM) and Grad-CAM++ to generate heatmaps to explain the classification models. These visual heatmaps elucidate the contribution of each input region to the classification outcome. The CNN-based model approach achieved the highest accuracy at 98.37% in the Xception model with a sensitivity and specificity of 95.92% and 99.01%, respectively. The ViT-based model approach achieved high values for accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity, such as 92.79%, 91.09%, and 93.54%, respectively. Furthermore, the performance of the model was assessed through intersection over union (IOU) and other qualitative evaluations. Finally, we developed the proposed model as a web application that can be used as a support tool for medical practitioners in real-time. Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS) offer the potential to customize the radio propagation environment for wireless networks, and will be a key element for 6G communications. However, due to the unique constraints in these systems, the optimization problems associated to RIS configuration are challenging to solve. This paper illustrates a new approach to the RIS configuration problem, based on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning (DL) algorithms. Concretely, a custom convolutional neural network (CNN) intended for edge computing is presented, and implementations on different representative edge devices are compared, including the use of commercial AI-oriented devices and a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) platform. This FPGA option provides the best performance, with × 20 performance increase over the closest FP32, GPU-accelerated option, and almost × 3 performance advantage when compared with the INT8-quantized, TPU-accelerated implementation. More noticeably, this is achieved even when high-level synthesis (HLS) tools are used and no custom accelerators are developed. Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the most promising technologies based on machine learning algorithms. In this paper, we propose a workflow for the implementation of deep neural networks. This workflow attempts to combine the flexibility of high-level compilers (HLS)-based networks with the architectural control features of hardware description languages (HDL)-based flows. The architecture consists of a convolutional neural network, SqueezeNet v1.1, and a hard processor system (HPS) that coexists with acceleration hardware to be designed. This methodology allows us to compare solutions based solely on software (PyTorch 1.13.1) and propose heterogeneous inference solutions, taking advantage of the best options within the software and hardware flow. The proposed workflow is implemented on a low-cost field programmable gate array system-on-chip (FPGA SOC) platform, specifically the DE10-Nano development board. We have provided systolic architectural solutions written in OpenCL that are highly flexible and easily tunable to take full advantage of the resources of programmable devices and achieve superior energy efficiencies working with a 32-bit floating point. From a verification point of view, the proposed method is effective, since the reference models in all tests, both for the individual layers and the complete network, have been readily available using packages well known in the development, training, and inference of deep networks. Image analysis-based artificial intelligence (AI) models leveraging convolutional neural networks (CNN) take a significant role in evaluating the ripeness of strawberry, contributing to the maximization of productivity. However, the convolution, which constitutes the majority of the CNN models, imposes significant computational burdens. Additionally, the dense operations in the fully connected (FC) layer necessitate a vast number of parameters and entail extensive external memory access. Therefore, reducing the computational burden of convolution operations and alleviating memory overhead is essential in embedded environment. In this paper, we propose a strawberry ripeness classification system utilizing a convolution-based feature extractor (CoFEx) for accelerating convolution operations and an edge AI processor, Intellino, for replacing FC layer operations. We accelerated feature map extraction utilizing the CoFEx constructed with systolic array (SA) and alleviated the computational burden and memory overhead associated with the FC layer operations by replacing them with the k-nearest neighbors (k-NN) algorithm. The CoFEx and the Intellino both were designed with Verilog HDL and implemented on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA). The proposed system achieved a high precision of 93.4%, recall of 93.3%, and F1 score of 0.933. The popularity and demand for high-quality date palm fruits (Phoenix dactylifera L.) have been growing, and their quality largely depends on the type of handling, storage, and processing methods. The current methods of geometric evaluation and classification of date palm fruits are characterised by high labour intensity and are usually performed mechanically, which may cause additional damage and reduce the quality and value of the product. Therefore, non-contact methods are being sought based on image analysis, with digital solutions controlling the evaluation and classification processes. The main objective of this paper is to develop an automatic classification model for varieties of date palm fruits using a convolutional neural network (CNN) based on two fundamental criteria, i.e., colour difference and evaluation of geometric parameters of dates. A CNN with a fixed architecture was built, marked as DateNET, consisting of a system of five alternating Conv2D, MaxPooling2D, and Dropout classes. The validation accuracy of the model presented in this study depended on the selection of classification criteria. It was 85.24% for fruit colour-based classification and 87.62% for the geometric parameters only; however, it increased considerably to 93.41% when both the colour and geometry of dates were considered. Today, specific convolution neural network (CNN) models assigned to specific tasks are often used. In this article, the authors explored three models: MobileNet, EfficientNetB0, and InceptionV3 combined. The authors were interested in investigating how quickly an artificial intelligence model can be taught with limited computer resources. Three types of training bases were investigated, starting with a simple base verifying five colours, then recognizing two different orthogonal elements, followed by more complex images from different families. This research aimed to demonstrate the capabilities of the models based on training base parameters such as the number of images and epoch types. Architectures proposed by the authors in these cases were chosen based on simulation studies conducted on a virtual machine with limited hardware parameters. The proposals present the advantages and disadvantages of the different models based on the TensorFlow and Keras libraries in the Jupiter environment based on the Python programming language. An artificial intelligence model with a combination of MobileNet, proposed by Siemens, and Efficient and Inception, selected by the authors, allows for further work to be conducted on image classification, but with limited computer resources for industrial implementation on a programmable logical controller (PLC). The vector-transmitted Citrus Greening (CG) disease, also called Huanglongbing, is one of the most destructive diseases of citrus. Since no measures for directly controlling this disease are available at present, current disease management integrates several measures, such as vector control, the use of disease-free trees, the removal of diseased trees, etc. The most essential issue in integrated management is how CG-infected trees can be detected efficiently. For CG detection, digital image analyses using deep learning algorithms have attracted much interest from both researchers and growers. Models using transfer learning with the Faster R-CNN architecture were constructed and compared with two pre-trained Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) models, VGGNet and ResNet. Their efficiency was examined by integrating their feature extraction capabilities into the Convolution Block Attention Module (CBAM) to create VGGNet+CBAM and ResNet+CBAM variants. ResNet models performed best. Moreover, the integration of CBAM notably improved CG disease detection precision and the overall performance of the models. Efficient models with transfer learning using Faster R-CNN were loaded on web applications to facilitate access for real-time diagnosis by farmers via the deployment of in-field images. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. To prevent deaths, regular screenings with histopathological analysis of colorectal tissue should be performed. A diagnostic aid system could reduce the time required by medical professionals, and provide an initial approach to the final diagnosis. In this study, we analyze low computational custom architectures, based on Convolutional Neural Networks, which can serve as high-accuracy binary classifiers for colorectal cancer screening using histopathological images. For this purpose, we carry out an optimization process to obtain the best performance model in terms of effectiveness as a classifier and computational cost by reducing the number of parameters. Subsequently, we compare the results obtained with previous work in the same field. Cross-validation reveals a high robustness of the models as classifiers, yielding superior accuracy outcomes of 99.4 ± 0.58% and 93.2 ± 1.46% for the lighter model. The classifiers achieved an accuracy exceeding 99% on the test subset using low-resolution images and a significantly reduced layer count, with images sized at 11% of those used in previous studies. Driving while drowsy poses significant risks, including reduced cognitive function and the potential for accidents, which can lead to severe consequences such as trauma, economic losses, injuries, or death. The use of artificial intelligence can enable effective detection of driver drowsiness, helping to prevent accidents and enhance driver performance. This research aims to address the crucial need for real-time and accurate drowsiness detection to mitigate the impact of fatigue-related accidents. Leveraging ultra-wideband radar data collected over five minutes, the dataset was segmented into one-minute chunks and transformed into grayscale images. Spatial features are retrieved from the images using a two-dimensional Convolutional Neural Network. Following that, these features were used to train and test multiple machine learning classifiers. The ensemble classifier RF-XGB-SVM, which combines Random Forest, XGBoost, and Support Vector Machine using a hard voting criterion, performed admirably with an accuracy of 96.6%. Additionally, the proposed approach was validated with a robust k-fold score of 97% and a standard deviation of 0.018, demonstrating significant results. The dataset is augmented using Generative Adversarial Networks, resulting in improved accuracies for all models. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is the primary factor leading to vision impairment and blindness in diabetics. Uncontrolled diabetes can damage the retinal blood vessels. Initial detection and prompt medical intervention are vital in preventing progressive vision impairment. Today's growing medical field presents a more significant workload and diagnostic demands on medical professionals. In the proposed study, a convolutional neural network (CNN) is employed to detect the stages of DR. This research is crucial for studying DR because of its innovative methodology incorporating two different public datasets. This strategy enhances the model's capacity to generalize unseen DR images, as each dataset encompasses unique demographics and clinical circumstances. The network can learn and capture complicated hierarchical image features with asymmetric weights. Each image is preprocessed using contrast-limited adaptive histogram equalization and the discrete wavelet transform. The model is trained and validated using the combined datasets of Dataset for Diabetic Retinopathy and the Asia-Pacific Tele-Ophthalmology Society. The CNN model is tuned in with different learning rates and optimizers. An accuracy of 72% and an area under curve score of 0.90 was achieved by the CNN model with the Adam optimizer. Self-supervised learning continues to drive advancements in machine learning. However, the absence of unified computational processes for benchmarking and evaluation remains a challenge. This study conducts a comprehensive analysis of state-of-the-art self-supervised learning algorithms, emphasizing their underlying mechanisms and computational intricacies. Building upon this analysis, we introduce a unified model-agnostic computation (UMAC) process, tailored to complement modern self-supervised learning algorithms. UMAC serves as a model-agnostic and global explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) methodology that is capable of systematically integrating and enhancing state-of-the-art algorithms. Through UMAC, we identify key computational mechanisms and craft a unified framework for self-supervised learning evaluation. Leveraging UMAC, we integrate an XAI methodology to enhance transparency and interpretability. Our systematic approach yields a 17.12% increase in improvement in training time complexity and a 13.1% boost in improvement in testing time complexity. Notably, improvements are observed in augmentation, encoder architecture, and auxiliary components within the network classifier. These findings underscore the importance of structured computational processes in enhancing model efficiency and fortifying algorithmic transparency in self-supervised learning, paving the way for more interpretable and efficient AI models. Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is a severe complication of diabetes, causing damage to retinal blood vessels due to high blood sugar levels. Early detection is crucial but often requires significant time and expertise from ophthalmologists. While artificial intelligence (AI) and image recognition hold promise for DR detection, inconsistent image quality poses a challenge. Our study presents a novel technique that integrates pixel color amplification and EfficientNetV2 to enhance fundus image attributes, aiming to address issues related to image quality and achieving superior performance in DR detection. Leveraging EfficientNetV2, an advanced convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture, we achieve 84% multiclass accuracy and 99% binary accuracy, surpassing various other CNN models, including VGG16-fc1, VGG16-fc2, NASNet, Xception, Inception ResNetV2, EfficientNet, InceptionV3, MobileNet, and ResNet50. Our research tackles the critical challenge of early detection of DR, essential for preventing vision loss. Pedestrian monitoring in crowded areas like train stations has an important impact in the overall operation and management of those public spaces. An organized distribution of the different elements located inside a station will contribute not only to the safety of all passengers but will also allow for a more efficient process of the regular activities including entering/leaving the station, boarding/alighting from trains, and waiting. This improved distribution only comes by obtaining sufficiently accurate information on passengers' positions, and their derivatives like speeds, densities, traffic flow. The work described here addresses this need by using an artificial intelligence approach based on computational vision and convolutional neural networks. From the available videos taken regularly at subways stations, two methods are tested. One is based on tracking each person's bounding box from which filtered 3D kinematics are derived, including position, velocity and density. Another infers the pose and activity that a person has by analyzing its main body key points. Background: In recent years, computer-aided diagnosis for skin conditions has made significant strides, primarily driven by artificial intelligence (AI) solutions. However, despite this progress, the efficiency of AI-enabled systems remains hindered by the scarcity of high-quality and large-scale datasets, primarily due to privacy concerns. Methods: This research circumvents privacy issues associated with real-world acne datasets by creating a synthetic dataset of human faces with varying acne severity levels (mild, moderate, and severe) using Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). Further, three object detection models—YOLOv5, YOLOv8, and Detectron2—are used to evaluate the efficacy of the augmented dataset for detecting acne. Results: Integrating StyleGAN with these models, the results demonstrate the mean average precision (mAP) scores: YOLOv5: 73.5%, YOLOv8: 73.6%, and Detectron2: 37.7%. These scores surpass the mAP achieved without GANs. Conclusions: This study underscores the effectiveness of GANs in generating synthetic facial acne images and emphasizes the importance of utilizing GANs and convolutional neural network (CNN) models for accurate acne detection. Zacatecas is one of the states producing the most onions in the northeast region of Mexico. This study examines the application of artificial intelligence through the use of deep learning, specifically convolutional neural networks, to identify the patterns that can be found in a crop field, in this case, vegetation, soil, and humidity zones. To extract the mentioned patterns, the K-nearest neighbor algorithm was used to pre-process images taken using unmanned aerial vehicles and form a dataset composed of 3672 images of vegetation, soil, and humidity (1224 for each class). A total of six convolutional neural network models were used to identify and classify the patterns, namely Alexnet, DenseNet, VGG16, SqueezeNet, MobileNetV2, and Res-Net18. Each model was evaluated with the following validation metrics: accuracy, F1-score, precision, and recall. The results showed a variation in performance between 90% and almost 100%. Alexnet obtained the highest metrics with an accuracy of 99.92%, while MobileNetV2 had the lowest accuracy of 90.85%. Other models, such as DenseNet, VGG16, SqueezeNet, and ResNet18, showed an accuracy of between 92.02% and 98.78%. Furthermore, our study highlights the importance of adopting artificial intelligence in agriculture, particularly in the management of onion fields in Zacatecas, Mexico. This research investigates the application of deep learning in sentiment analysis of Canadian maritime case law. It offers a framework for improving maritime law and legal analytic policy-making procedures. The automation of legal document extraction takes center stage, underscoring the vital role sentiment analysis plays at the document level. Therefore, this study introduces a novel strategy for sentiment analysis in Canadian maritime case law, combining sentiment case law approaches with state-of-the-art deep learning techniques. The overarching goal is to systematically unearth hidden biases within case law and investigate their impact on legal outcomes. Employing Convolutional Neural Network (CNN)- and long short-term memory (LSTM)-based models, this research achieves a remarkable accuracy of 98.05% for categorizing instances. In contrast, conventional machine learning techniques such as support vector machine (SVM) yield an accuracy rate of 52.57%, naïve Bayes at 57.44%, and logistic regression at 61.86%. The superior accuracy of the CNN and LSTM model combination underscores its usefulness in legal sentiment analysis, offering promising future applications in diverse fields like legal analytics and policy design. This study presents a responsive analysis of the role of artificial intelligence (AI) in risk management, contrasting traditional approaches with those augmented by AI and highlighting the challenges and opportunities that emerge. AI, intense learning methodologies such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs), have been identified as pivotal in extracting meaningful insights from image data, a form of analysis that holds significant potential in identifying and managing risks across various industries. The research methodology involves a strategic selection and processing of images for analysis and introduces three case studies that serve as benchmarks for evaluation. These case studies showcase the application of AI, in place of image processing capabilities, to identify hazards, evaluate risks, and suggest control measures. The comparative evaluation focuses on the accuracy, relevance, and practicality of the AI-generated findings alongside the system's response time and comprehensive understanding of the context. Background: After breast conserving surgery (BCS), surgical clips indicate the tumor bed and, thereby, the most probable area for tumor relapse. The aim of this study was to investigate whether a U-Net-based deep convolutional neural network (dCNN) may be used to detect surgical clips in follow-up mammograms after BCS. Methods: 884 mammograms and 517 tomosynthetic images depicting surgical clips and calcifications were manually segmented and classified. A U-Net-based segmentation network was trained with 922 images and validated with 394 images. An external test dataset consisting of 39 images was annotated by two radiologists with up to 7 years of experience in breast imaging. The network's performance was compared to that of human readers using accuracy and interrater agreement (Cohen's Kappa). Results: The overall classification accuracy on the validation set after 45 epochs ranged between 88.2% and 92.6%, indicating that the model's performance is comparable to the decisions of a human reader. In 17.4% of cases, calcifications have been misclassified as post-operative clips. The interrater reliability of the model compared to the radiologists showed substantial agreement (κreader1 = 0.72, κreader2 = 0.78) while the readers compared to each other revealed a Cohen's Kappa of 0.84, thus showing near-perfect agreement. Conclusions: With this study, we show that surgery clips can adequately be identified by an AI technique. A potential application of the proposed technique is patient triage as well as the automatic exclusion of post-operative cases from PGMI (Perfect, Good, Moderate, Inadequate) evaluation, thus improving the quality management workflow. An extensive literature review was conducted to consider the potential of designing a fully automated, complete diagnostic platform capable of integrating the current medical imaging technologies. Adjuvant, targeted, non-systematic research was regarded as necessary, especially to the end-user medical expert, for the completeness, understanding and terminological clarity of this discussion article that focuses on giving a representative and inclusive idea of the evolutional strides that have taken place, not including an AI architecture technical evaluation. Recent developments in AI applications for assessing various organ systems, as well as enhancing oncology and histopathology, show significant impact on medical practice. Published research outcomes of AI picture segmentation and classification algorithms exhibit promising accuracy, sensitivity and specificity. Progress in this field has led to the introduction of the concept of explainable AI, which ensures transparency of deep learning architectures, enabling human involvement in clinical decision making, especially in critical healthcare scenarios. Structure and language standardization of medical reports, along with interdisciplinary collaboration between medical and technical experts, are crucial for research coordination. Patient personal data should always be handled with confidentiality and dignity, while ensuring legality in the attribution of responsibility, particularly in view of machines lacking empathy and self-awareness. The results of our literature research demonstrate the strong potential of utilizing AI architectures, mainly convolutional neural networks, in medical imaging diagnostics, even though a complete automated diagnostic platform, enabling full body scanning, has not yet been presented. When agricultural experts explore the use of artificial intelligence technology to identify and detect crop diseases, they mainly focus on the research of a stable environment, but ignore the problem of noise in the process of image acquisition in real situations. To solve this problem, we propose an innovative solution called the Critical Information Mining Network (CIMNet). Compared with traditional models, CIMNet has higher recognition accuracy and wider application scenarios. The network has a good effect on crop disease recognition under noisy environments, and can effectively deal with the interference of noise to the recognition effect in actual farmland scenes. Consider that the shape of the leaves can be symmetrical or asymmetrical.First, we introduce the Non-Local Attention Module (Non-Local), which uses a unique self-attention mechanism to fully capture the context information of the image. The module overcomes the limitation of traditional convolutional neural networks that only rely on local features and ignore global features. Global features are particularly important when the image is disturbed by noise. Non-Local improves a more comprehensive visual understanding of crop disease recognition. Secondly, we have innovatively designed a Multi-scale Critical Information Fusion Module (MSCM). The module uses the Key Information Extraction Module (KIB) to dig into the shallow key features in the network deeply. The shallow key features strengthen the feature perception of the model to the noise image through texture and contour information, and then the shallow key features and deep features are fused to enrich the original deep feature information of the network. Finally, we conducted experiments on two public datasets, and the results showed that the accuracy of our model in crop disease identification under a noisy environment was significantly improved. At the same time, our model also showed excellent performance under stable conditions. The results of this study provide favorable support for the improvement of crop production efficiency.
